00:00:17.400 | and we're looking at the subject of concluding a counseling case.

00:00:22.000 | And so, this question is very practical.

00:00:31.000 | It's actually related to some of the training I go through when I orient new counselors

00:00:38.000 | to the phase three ACBC training, the 50 hours of supervised counseling training.

00:00:45.000 | And it's helpful to do some of that material here as we prepare to write counseling exam number seven.

00:00:54.000 | So, thank you for joining us tonight. I trust you'll be blessed by our time together,

00:00:59.000 | and I hope this will be a practical look at how we structure counseling sessions

00:01:07.000 | and how do we bring those sessions to a conclusion.

00:01:12.000 | Let me go ahead and read the exam question for tonight,

00:01:15.000 | and then we'll dive into some foundational material.

00:01:20.000 | The question for counseling exam number seven lists several reasons for concluding a counseling case.

00:01:28.000 | For each, describe how you would go about ending the counseling.

00:01:34.000 | In order to address this question, what I want to do is, first of all,

00:01:38.000 | give you a big picture overview of why we as biblical counselors aim to conclude a counseling relationship,

00:01:49.000 | at least in a formal sense.

00:01:52.000 | We desire in the biblical counseling ministry that our formal counseling sessions do move to a conclusion.

00:02:01.000 | We want to bring people to a place where they can transition back into the fellowship of the local church,

00:02:08.000 | where they can transition into the general discipleship ministries of the local church.

00:02:16.000 | I often say to our counselors that counseling ministry is like urgent care or emergency care,

00:02:23.000 | and the ministry of the local church is like primary care.

00:02:27.000 | We don't want our counselees to live in the emergency room.

00:02:32.000 | We don't want them to live in urgent care.

00:02:34.000 | We want them to go back to normal life and be at a place where they can see a primary care doctor

00:02:41.000 | as opposed to an emergency care doctor.

00:02:45.000 | And so we are always seeking to bring our formal counseling sessions to a conclusion

00:02:53.000 | or at least to a place where we can transition people into the fellowship of the local church.

00:02:59.000 | We don't want our formal counseling sessions to be going for years.

00:03:05.000 | Now, you will note that this is a contrast to how most secular therapists run their practices.

00:03:13.000 | It's not uncommon for many people to say when they're seeing a secular therapist

00:03:17.000 | that I've been seeing my therapist for years or I have an ongoing relationship with my therapist

00:03:24.000 | that has been going for an extended period of time and is just sort of an ongoing relationship.

00:03:32.000 | In the biblical counseling ministry of a local church,

00:03:35.000 | we don't want our formal counseling sessions to go on for years.

00:03:40.000 | We ideally would want them to go on for anywhere between two to six months.

00:03:47.000 | But beyond that, we really don't want to see the sessions to go on for an indefinite period of time.

00:03:55.000 | And the reason for that is our ecclesiology.

00:03:58.000 | It's our understanding of the local church that a counseling ministry is just one branch

00:04:05.000 | or one expression of the wider ministry of the local church.

00:04:10.000 | A counseling ministry is never to replace the local church.

00:04:14.000 | A counseling ministry is never to be the only expression of grace in a counselee's life,

00:04:21.000 | that they're only seeing a counselor,

00:04:23.000 | but they're not engaging in the wider practice of the ministry of the local church.

00:04:29.000 | And because of our ecclesiology, we don't want to see counseling relationships,

00:04:35.000 | at least in a formal sense, be ongoing for years and years.

00:04:40.000 | We do want to bring those formal counseling sessions to a conclusion and to a transition.

00:04:47.000 | And so this question hits on a practical topic,

00:04:52.000 | but a topic that does touch on our wider perspective on how counseling is to function in the local church.

00:05:02.000 | We don't want our counselees to become overly dependent upon the counselor.

00:05:09.000 | We want our counselees to be dependent on the Lord.

00:05:13.000 | We want our counselees to be dependent on the word.

00:05:16.000 | We want them to be dependent on the ministry of the local church.

00:05:22.000 | And so we're always seeking to strike that balance of being available,

00:05:27.000 | but also wanting to transition our counselees into the broader ministry of the church.

00:05:36.000 | So we want to talk through some big picture issues as we look at this topic,

00:05:41.000 | and then practically look at some positive reasons to conclude a counseling relationships,

00:05:49.000 | reasons that are related to success in counseling ministry, which is always a joy.

00:05:56.000 | And then we want to look at some negative reasons to conclude a counseling relationships,

00:06:03.000 | just to prepare you for some of what may be up ahead.

00:06:07.000 | So a good topic for tonight.

00:06:10.000 | Let me pray for us, and then we'll get into our study for tonight.

00:06:14.000 | Father, thank you for the ministry of the local church.

00:06:17.000 | We thank you for the promise that Christ will build his church.

00:06:22.000 | The gates of Hades shall not stand against it.

00:06:25.000 | We thank you that counseling ministry is one expression of the ministry of the church,

00:06:32.000 | and we pray that we would learn to steward that responsibility and that ministry wisely.

00:06:39.000 | Bless us as we look at this practical topic.

00:06:42.000 | May it be of help to the students who are working through these essays,

00:06:48.000 | and as we put pen to paper and articulate our views on these issues,

00:06:53.000 | bring clarity to our understanding of how counseling ministry is to operate,

00:07:20.000 | First of all, I want to recommend to you, if you haven't gotten this already,

00:07:23.000 | Jeremy Pierre and Deepak Raju's book, "The Pastor and Counseling."

00:07:29.000 | That's a book that is very readable.

00:07:31.000 | It is very summarized and concise information.

00:07:37.000 | If you wanted one book that summarized the basic principles of biblical counseling

00:07:42.000 | in an easy-to-read format, this would be the book to place into the hands of someone

00:07:48.000 | who is interested in this topic.

00:07:51.000 | Maybe there is a busy pastor.

00:07:54.000 | I think this is the intended audience, that you have a busy pastor

00:07:57.000 | who doesn't have time to go through an entire three-year training program

00:08:02.000 | as it relates to counseling,

00:08:04.000 | but needs to have the basic principles of biblical counseling understood,

00:08:09.000 | and this is a helpful read that can be placed into someone's hands.

00:08:14.000 | Dr. Pierre and Dr. Raju have a great chapter in that book,

00:08:19.000 | chapter six, that's called "The Final Meeting."

00:08:23.000 | It is a very practical look on how to conclude a counseling case,

00:08:29.000 | and I would highly recommend that you read that in preparation

00:08:32.000 | for writing counseling exam number seven.

00:08:37.000 | There are a few blog posts that are listed there that will be helpful to you,

00:08:42.000 | and I've sought to place the PDFs of these blog posts in your Dropbox folder.

00:08:49.000 | You should be able to access them, but if you want to look up the links,

00:08:54.000 | you can do that as well.

00:08:56.000 | Jay Adams has a very helpful list that's entitled "50 Failure Factors."

00:09:04.000 | Now, that's a good list of questions to ask.

00:09:08.000 | If you find that you are meeting with a counselee for a number of weeks,

00:09:12.000 | and you're just not making the progress that you hoped you would,

00:09:17.000 | or you feel stuck, or the counselee doesn't seem to be changing,

00:09:21.000 | that's a good list of questions to ask yourself just to evaluate what's going on

00:09:27.000 | in your counseling ministry.

00:09:30.000 | It's not that all 50 factors are going to be involved in any counseling relationship,

00:09:36.000 | but if you feel stuck, check out this list and ask yourself some simple questions.

00:09:42.000 | I'm going to put some examples of these questions on the screen here.

00:09:47.000 | These are just helpful questions to ask.

00:09:49.000 | If you feel like I've met with this counselee for six to eight times,

00:09:53.000 | we're not seeming to make any progress, we seem to be stuck,

00:09:57.000 | here's some good questions to ask.

00:09:59.000 | Is the counselee truly a Christian?

00:10:02.000 | There have been times when I've gotten into counseling ministry

00:10:05.000 | and gotten into session number eight or session number 10,

00:10:09.000 | and I realize we're not making any progress,

00:10:12.000 | and I've realized I never really did my due diligence in finding out

00:10:17.000 | the counselee's salvation testimony, their understanding of the gospel,

00:10:22.000 | and I have to ask myself this question.

00:10:25.000 | Am I dealing with a genuine born-again Christian?

00:10:29.000 | There's nothing more frustrating than trying to pull non-Christian behavior

00:10:34.000 | or Christian behavior out of an unregenerate heart.

00:10:38.000 | And so just going back and asking yourself, is the counselee truly a Christian?

00:10:44.000 | Do you have all of the necessary data?

00:10:48.000 | Have you done your due diligence in terms of data gathering?

00:10:52.000 | This is just a basic rule that I try to follow.

00:10:55.000 | If I feel stuck in a counseling relationship or my counseling sessions

00:11:01.000 | aren't going anywhere, then sometimes I'll ask myself,

00:11:05.000 | did I do my due diligence in getting all the data necessary?

00:11:11.000 | And going back to doing data gathering is helpful to working through

00:11:16.000 | the counselee's issues and moving forward in that relationship.

00:11:23.000 | Would a medical examination be in order?

00:11:26.000 | Is there a physical issue that is contributing to the counselee's problems

00:11:31.000 | that we haven't gotten a physical diagnosis?

00:11:37.000 | Are you regularly assigning concrete homework?

00:11:41.000 | Matt Shackelford, who is an ACBC fellow, and I've worked with him

00:11:45.000 | in counseling ministry, he's often said that when you feel stuck

00:11:49.000 | in a counseling relationship, then get more specific

00:11:53.000 | about your homework assignments.

00:11:56.000 | Get more specific with application.

00:11:59.000 | Perhaps your homework assignments are too general.

00:12:02.000 | Perhaps they are not specific enough.

00:12:06.000 | And so are your homework assignments concrete and specific enough

00:12:13.000 | to lead to life change?

00:12:16.000 | Have you been focusing on the wrong problem?

00:12:21.000 | Sometimes in working with counselors, you will find that they're trying

00:12:26.000 | to address five different issues in the counselee's life when they really

00:12:30.000 | need to focus on one.

00:12:33.000 | You can't address everything in a counselee's life.

00:12:36.000 | And sometimes they're working through the wrong issue,

00:12:41.000 | or at least not the issue that is most prominent in the counselee's life.

00:12:46.000 | So that's just a question to ask yourself if you feel stuck

00:12:50.000 | in the counseling relationship.

00:12:53.000 | Have you stressed the put off to the exclusion of the put on?

00:12:58.000 | We can emphasize so much not being angry that we do not emphasize

00:13:05.000 | being kind and forgiving.

00:13:09.000 | We can emphasize so much not being self-centered that we don't emphasize

00:13:14.000 | how to serve others in ministry.

00:13:17.000 | And so biblical change, biblical sanctification, as we've learned,

00:13:22.000 | is put off and put on.

00:13:24.000 | Put off anger, put on kindness.

00:13:27.000 | Put off selfishness and put on service and selflessness towards others.

00:13:35.000 | Just a helpful question to ask as you're evaluating your ministry.

00:13:40.000 | Do you really believe there's hope?

00:13:43.000 | Are you trying to impart hope when you yourself don't have a lot of hope

00:13:50.000 | for the counselee?

00:13:53.000 | And that's some hard work that the counselor needs to do on his own,

00:13:58.000 | and this is a helpful question to ask yourself if you feel stuck.

00:14:03.000 | Have you been assuming wrongly that this case is similar to a previous case?

00:14:12.000 | So you may be counseling someone with anxiety,

00:14:16.000 | and you're trying to counsel this person,

00:14:18.000 | and you're remembering someone you counseled last year who was struggling

00:14:22.000 | with anxiety, and you're giving the exact same homework,

00:14:26.000 | and you're giving the exact same scripture assignments,

00:14:30.000 | and these are two completely different people who have two different

00:14:35.000 | circumstances who may even be at different maturity levels.

00:14:40.000 | And so the homework that may be used to help one counselee is not appropriate

00:14:45.000 | to another counselee.

00:14:49.000 | And so as you work through this list,

00:14:51.000 | this is just an example of the 50 failure factors,

00:14:55.000 | but it's a good list just to prompt your thinking.

00:14:58.000 | I don't want you to get discouraged already as you look through this list,

00:15:02.000 | but I do want you to have as a resource some questions to ask yourself if you

00:15:08.000 | get to the place where you just feel like the counseling is not going well

00:15:13.000 | or that you're not making the progress that you had hoped to see.

00:15:19.000 | If you look back on page one of your handout moving forward,

00:15:26.000 | you have a few good blog posts on the subject on how to conclude a

00:15:30.000 | counseling relationship.

00:15:33.000 | There's one by Jay Adams called "How Can I Know When to Terminate

00:15:36.000 | Counseling," one by Deepak Raju, "When Do You Stop Counseling?"

00:15:42.000 | That blog post is essentially the same material found in chapter six of "The

00:15:48.000 | Pastor and Counseling," so if you don't want to buy the book,

00:15:52.000 | you can get that material in a blog post.

00:15:56.000 | Just some very helpful material on this subject.

00:16:01.000 | And then Rick Thomas has a blog post that's entitled "What to Do When

00:16:05.000 | Counseling is Not Going Anywhere."

00:16:09.000 | That's some good material to think through on ending a counseling

00:16:13.000 | relationship due to negative reasons.

00:16:18.000 | We'll talk through some positive reasons in our time together,

00:16:20.000 | but sometimes there are negative reasons where you want to bring the

00:16:25.000 | counseling relationship to a conclusion.

00:16:30.000 | And then I would recommend to you the audio teaching by Jim Neuhauser and

00:16:35.000 | Bob Goodsward.

00:16:37.000 | They go through a list that's called "When to Stop Counseling," and we'll

00:16:41.000 | go through some of that material in our session tonight.

00:16:44.000 | But if you want to get the full treatment of that list,

00:16:48.000 | check out the audio teaching on "When to Stop Counseling" by Bob Goodsward

00:16:53.000 | and Jim Neuhauser.

00:16:56.000 | Some very helpful thoughts on this subject.

00:17:02.000 | With that said, let's move to page two of your course handout,

00:17:05.000 | and let's look at the topic "Concluding a Counseling Case."

00:17:11.000 | This is some of the introductory thoughts that I want to bring to your

00:17:17.000 | attention as we look at the topic of concluding a counseling case.

00:17:24.000 | We want to ask the question, "Why do we conclude counseling relationships?

00:17:28.000 | Why is it in a biblical counseling ministry we want to bring formal

00:17:34.000 | counseling to an end?"

00:17:36.000 | Now, I mentioned the contrast between the secular therapist and the biblical

00:17:41.000 | counselor.

00:17:42.000 | Admittedly, there's some financial considerations there.

00:17:46.000 | It's not in the secular therapist's best financial interest to bring all of

00:17:52.000 | those relationships with clients to an end.

00:17:57.000 | That may put the therapist out of business,

00:18:00.000 | and I don't want to assign motives where I don't know motives.

00:18:03.000 | I don't believe that all secular therapists are just trying to make money in

00:18:08.000 | terms of their engagement in helping people.

00:18:12.000 | But there is a financial element there that has to be considered.

00:18:18.000 | In our counseling ministry here at the church, we don't charge for counseling.

00:18:22.000 | We don't have a financial motive to keep people coming back for counseling,

00:18:27.000 | and so that does help us work through our ecclesiology of what we're trying to

00:18:32.000 | do with our counselees.

00:18:35.000 | We want them to move from the counseling room into the general discipleship

00:18:41.000 | ministries of the church.

00:18:44.000 | And so we're very clear with our counselors,

00:18:47.000 | and we're very clear with our counselees that this formal counseling

00:18:52.000 | relationship is not meant to go on indefinitely.

00:18:57.000 | And so when do we bring that relationship or that formal aspect of ministry to

00:19:04.000 | an end?

00:19:05.000 | At the top of your handout, a good quote by Jeremy Pierre and Deepak Reju.

00:19:09.000 | They write, "When to end counseling is always a judgment call that requires

00:19:16.000 | wisdom.

00:19:18.000 | It's best to frame the decision with some clear criteria."

00:19:24.000 | That's a good statement.

00:19:25.000 | Ultimately, there's not any hard and fast rules on when to bring this formal

00:19:31.000 | relationship to an end.

00:19:33.000 | It requires good judgment.

00:19:34.000 | It depends on the person.

00:19:36.000 | It depends on the counseling issue.

00:19:38.000 | How much progress has been made?

00:19:40.000 | You have to factor in your own resources,

00:19:44.000 | your own schedule into the decision.

00:19:47.000 | We want to be good stewards of the time and the energy that the Lord has given

00:19:52.000 | to us.

00:19:53.000 | And there are some cases where it's just not good stewardship to continue

00:19:58.000 | meeting with a counselee.

00:20:00.000 | Let's say if you've met with this counselee for 10 to 12 weeks,

00:20:04.000 | and the counselee's not doing his or her homework,

00:20:07.000 | not being motivated to pursue life change,

00:20:11.000 | there may be a point in that formal counseling relationship where you just

00:20:16.000 | determine it's not good stewardship of my time and resources to continue

00:20:21.000 | meeting with this counselee when there are other people on a waiting list who

00:20:26.000 | would be highly motivated to pursue life change and to be diligent with their

00:20:31.000 | homework.

00:20:32.000 | You have to be careful with that and be balanced with that.

00:20:35.000 | You have to ask God for wisdom depending on the situation and the counselee.

00:20:40.000 | But stewardship is one of the factors that you have to consider.

00:20:45.000 | You only have so much time.

00:20:47.000 | You only have so much, a limited amount of energy.

00:20:52.000 | And you want to invest it in the place where there's going to be the most

00:20:56.000 | fruitfulness.

00:20:57.000 | Now there are places where you just need to persevere without counselee.

00:21:02.000 | And God is going to give you wisdom to determine that,

00:21:06.000 | that I just need to persevere and be patient.

00:21:09.000 | And my counselee is going to make a change.

00:21:12.000 | But there have been times when I've told my counselees that when you finish

00:21:19.000 | your next homework assignment, make an appointment to come see me again.

00:21:24.000 | In other words, the ball is in your court to take the next step,

00:21:28.000 | to be faithful, to complete a homework assignment.

00:21:32.000 | And until you complete that assignment,

00:21:36.000 | then we're not going to continue meeting if you're not going to follow

00:21:41.000 | through with some of the material.

00:21:44.000 | That's one way where you can keep the door open.

00:21:48.000 | You can allow the counselee to know that there is ministry available,

00:21:55.000 | but you can also hold the counselee accountable to be responsible to follow

00:22:00.000 | through with life change.

00:22:02.000 | Because we don't want the counseling sessions merely to become a vent

00:22:05.000 | session or a time to complain about problems.

00:22:09.000 | We want to be working constructively towards biblical solutions.

00:22:13.000 | And that involves the counselee doing his part or her part to complete

00:22:18.000 | homework and to follow through with assignments.

00:22:23.000 | The ACBC standards of conduct say this,

00:22:26.000 | it may at times be wise to end a formal counseling relationship when

00:22:31.000 | counseling has become counterproductive to the counselee.

00:22:37.000 | When further meetings are no longer wise or possible,

00:22:40.000 | reasonable effort is made to connect a counselee with someone who will

00:22:45.000 | continue biblical care.

00:22:48.000 | You might be saying,

00:22:49.000 | can a counseling relationship actually become counterproductive to the

00:22:55.000 | counselee? And it can be.

00:22:59.000 | It can actually be a substitute for the counselee doing the hard work of

00:23:06.000 | pursuing life change to the glory of God.

00:23:10.000 | If the counselor becomes a substitute for relying upon Christ,

00:23:15.000 | if the counselor becomes a substitute for relying upon God's word,

00:23:20.000 | then a counseling relationship can actually be counterproductive to the

00:23:24.000 | change that you are trying to move people towards.

00:23:29.000 | And so the standards of conduct just acknowledge that you have to apply

00:23:32.000 | that in your own counseling ministry. Again, be wise,

00:23:36.000 | be patient and gracious, believe the best about your counselees.

00:23:41.000 | Those are the general rules to persevere with people.

00:23:45.000 | Learn to give shorter homework assignments.

00:23:49.000 | If you feel like your counselee is just struggling to complete the homework

00:23:53.000 | assignments, perhaps you've assigned too much homework.

00:23:57.000 | And you need to learn to adjust your homework assignments.

00:24:00.000 | Sometimes you need to go to baby steps and give the counselee one page or

00:24:06.000 | five pages to read and then work upwards to 10 or 20 pages as you move along.

00:24:13.000 | But you want to be patient and gracious and give the counselee the benefit of

00:24:18.000 | the doubt.

00:24:19.000 | But you also want to hold the counselee accountable to pursuing life change.

00:24:26.000 | Rick Thomas says this at times, the best thing you can do is let them go.

00:24:31.000 | In my line of work, that is biblical counseling.

00:24:34.000 | Many people are pressing in on me asking for help.

00:24:38.000 | I cannot help them all.

00:24:40.000 | My general working rule of thumbs to help those who put forth a measurable

00:24:44.000 | effort.

00:24:46.000 | If they are not willing to put forth the effort,

00:24:48.000 | I'll move on to the person who wants to change.

00:24:52.000 | The person who wants to change will be motivated to change.

00:24:57.000 | As evidenced by their observable.

00:24:59.000 | Work ethic.

00:25:01.000 | Now as a caveat, please.

00:25:05.000 | Keep in mind that you want to keep the long view.

00:25:11.000 | In mind when you're working with counselees and I haven't put this in my

00:25:14.000 | notes. I don't think, but I'll just throw this in there because it comes to

00:25:17.000 | mind.

00:25:18.000 | There may be some people in your life.

00:25:23.000 | Who will seem to not be motivated to change.

00:25:29.000 | They will not seem to want to do their homework.

00:25:31.000 | They will not seem particularly open to your counsel.

00:25:34.000 | And you might be tempted to bring that counseling relationship too.

00:25:38.000 | And end, and there might be cases where you should do that,

00:25:41.000 | but I want you to keep the long view in mind.

00:25:48.000 | Perhaps it is not the right timing.

00:25:51.000 | Perhaps the Lord is doing something in the counselee's life.

00:25:55.000 | That requires time to carry through to completion.

00:25:59.000 | I have had counseling relationships that I have felt.

00:26:02.000 | Boy, this.

00:26:03.000 | Counseling relationship really didn't go that great.

00:26:08.000 | And I've had a couple of people in my life.

00:26:14.000 | Who I've had to find out one year later or two years later,

00:26:17.000 | the counselee comes back to me.

00:26:18.000 | And says what you shared with me.

00:26:25.000 | Really has helped,

00:26:26.000 | or I remember how you met with me and how you cared for me and how you

00:26:29.000 | prayed for me.

00:26:30.000 | And there can be fruit long-term.

00:26:32.000 | And I've had people come back to me.

00:26:38.000 | And say, you know,

00:26:39.000 | those conversations really didn't go that great,

00:26:41.000 | but God uses that in his timing.

00:26:43.000 | For his glory and for the blessing in.

00:26:45.000 | The counselee's life.

00:26:50.000 | So just don't be quick to judge in the immediate,

00:26:54.000 | learn to take the long look.

00:26:58.000 | You know,

00:27:01.000 | I've been counseling for many years and as my supervisor,

00:27:04.000 | Wayne Johnston said to me.

00:27:07.000 | There've been times when he felt that counseling relationships really.

00:27:13.000 | Weren't that productive only to find years later that God does a work in

00:27:17.000 | softening.

00:27:18.000 | The counselee's heart.

00:27:19.000 | And the person comes back and thanks you for their ministry.

00:27:23.000 | And, you know,

00:27:28.000 | I've been doing our best to keep the doors open for ministry.

00:27:35.000 | So some big picture reasons why formal counseling is.

00:27:39.000 | Limited.

00:27:40.000 | Why are we trying to move people to.

00:27:42.000 | Conclusions.

00:27:46.000 | Number one,

00:27:47.000 | we remember from our year one training that counseling is targeted.

00:27:50.000 | Discipleship.

00:28:01.000 | We are focused on a specific issue and trying to

00:28:05.000 | disciple the counselee.

00:28:07.000 | As it relates to a specific life issue.
