Can I Be Sure I’m Saved If Persevering Is the Proof?

00:00:00.000 | It is Friday today, and we have a question from Pete Killingly in the UK.
00:00:04.240 | Dear Pastor John, thank you for your ministry.
00:00:06.000 | I've listened to every one of your APJ episodes and have found them to be a great blessing.
00:00:10.720 | My question is this.
00:00:12.320 | I understand the Bible to teach that a true Christian is one who perseveres to the end.
00:00:16.000 | And in the sad circumstances where someone professes faith, but then falls away, they were never truly a Christian.
00:00:22.960 | For myself, I fully believe that I have been saved by Christ, and I see the fruit of this in my life.
00:00:27.200 | However, as a long-time pastor, I'm sure you know of people who would also have been convinced that they were truly born again,
00:00:33.680 | would have appeared to bear fruit in their lives, but later showed that they were not truly saved by abandoning the faith.
00:00:39.680 | So if my salvation is only true and finally evidenced by my perseverance, how much weight can I attach to God's promises?
00:00:47.200 | My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 1.6, "He who began a good work in you will see it through to completion at the day of Christ Jesus."
00:00:55.040 | But how can I know that this is true for me, when it's only when I have run the race set before me that I will truly know that I did persevere and therefore was truly saved?
00:01:04.000 | I think what Pete says in that last sentence is, as he worded it, such a truism that he probably means something more.
00:01:17.280 | And the more that he means, I don't think is true.
00:01:23.040 | In fact, I would say that God is at pains in the New Testament to show that the more that I'm going to draw out, I think, the more that Pete implies in that last sentence is not true.
00:01:39.520 | God is at pains to show it's not true.
00:01:41.760 | What he says is this, "It is only when I have run the race set before me that I will truly know that I did persevere."
00:01:54.960 | Well, of course, only after you have persevered can you know that you did persevere.
00:02:06.080 | You can only know that you did something, past tense, after you do it.
00:02:12.240 | That's a truism.
00:02:13.280 | But I think what Pete is really saying is that you can only know truly that you're saved after you persevere to the end and prove that you are a Christian by your perseverance.
00:02:30.880 | In other words, he's deeply concerned that on this side of perseverance, when we haven't finished it yet, that there can be no "true," he says, "true knowing," true knowledge, true assurance that we will persevere.
00:02:47.760 | And that's what I think God is at pains in the New Testament to show is false.
00:02:56.720 | That's not true.
00:02:59.520 | But Pete is absolutely right to point out that all the promises of God's preservation assume that we know we're included in those promises.
00:03:15.120 | That's right.
00:03:15.840 | That's a true concern.
00:03:17.200 | And that's the question.
00:03:18.880 | How can we know that?
00:03:20.960 | But I would ask Pete, do you think God gave all those promises to his church to keep them guessing?
00:03:30.480 | Was that the point?
00:03:32.480 | Do you think all those promises are pointless?
00:03:36.880 | The promises I'm talking about are ones like this.
00:03:41.600 | His favorite is Philippians 1.6.
00:03:44.160 | "I am sure of this," Paul says, "that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ."
00:03:53.440 | Or 1 Corinthians 1.8.
00:03:55.840 | "God will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of the Lord Jesus."
00:04:01.200 | God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son.
00:04:06.800 | Or 1 Thessalonians 5.23.
00:04:09.520 | "May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept, kept blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus."
00:04:16.320 | He who calls you is faithful.
00:04:20.000 | He will surely do it.
00:04:22.080 | Or 1 Peter 1.5.
00:04:25.120 | "By God's power, you are being guarded, kept guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
00:04:33.280 | Or Romans 8.30.
00:04:35.280 | "Those whom he predestined he called, and those whom he called he justified, and those whom he justified he glorified."
00:04:42.800 | No dropouts between justification and glorification.
00:04:46.480 | All the justified make it to the end.
00:04:49.360 | Or one last one.
00:04:50.480 | "I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us."
00:05:02.400 | Us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
00:05:06.320 | So Pete's question now is, how can I know I'm in the us?
00:05:11.680 | How can I know I'm in all those promises?
00:05:14.560 | That's the crucial question he's asking.
00:05:17.840 | But if you come with that question to the New Testament with suspicion, suspicion that you can't know,
00:05:29.760 | then what's the point of all the promises?
00:05:32.240 | Is God just tantalizing us?
00:05:35.120 | And I think the clear implication of all those promises that I just recited is that God intends for his children to take heart from them.
00:05:49.280 | That's the point.
00:05:50.400 | He wants us to be encouraged.
00:05:52.160 | He wants us to lay down our heads on the pillow at night, absolutely confident that if our heart stops beating at 2 a.m. while we're sound asleep and we wake up in—we will wake up in heaven.
00:06:09.680 | We will.
00:06:10.320 | That he doesn't want us to put our head down.
00:06:13.440 | I try this night after night.
00:06:15.440 | Put your head on the pillow and say, "Wow.
00:06:17.600 | I wonder if I die, if I'm going to heaven."
00:06:21.760 | Christians shouldn't feel that way.
00:06:24.320 | So I'm saying that however we do it, the Bible wants us to do it.
00:06:30.400 | The Bible wants us to enjoy that assurance.
00:06:33.040 | That's why all the promises are there.
00:06:35.600 | So let me give a couple of texts.
00:06:38.960 | One to show that, yes, God wants us to experience that.
00:06:43.600 | And the other to show how.
00:06:46.240 | 2 Peter 1.10 "Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election."
00:06:56.400 | So he's telling Pete, "Pete, you got to do this.
00:06:59.440 | You got to get there."
00:07:01.680 | This is the Bible telling us it's possible and calling us to do it.
00:07:06.160 | Make firm, make strong, make unshakable the calling and election that you have experienced.
00:07:13.360 | So Peter's recognizing how crucial Pete's question is.
00:07:16.960 | They've got two Petes here.
00:07:18.160 | You got to keep them straight.
00:07:19.920 | Whether we can know we're among the called and the elect when those promises are made to us.
00:07:26.560 | And the biblical Pete, the biblical Peter is saying to the Pete that wrote to us,
00:07:32.880 | "Confirm your calling and election.
00:07:36.000 | Make it firm."
00:07:38.400 | He assumes it can be firm and sure, and we can know that we're among the called and among the
00:07:45.760 | elect.
00:07:47.120 | Now, how?
00:07:47.840 | So here's the key passage.
00:07:51.120 | It's not the only one, but it's the key one.
00:07:53.840 | Romans 8.13-16.
00:07:56.000 | So I'll just say this straight to Pete.
00:07:58.480 | "For if you live according to the flesh, you'll die.
00:08:02.720 | But if by the Spirit you are put into death, the deeds of the body, you will live."
00:08:09.520 | That means eternally live.
00:08:10.960 | "For," here's the argument, "all who are led," that is led into that kind of warfare with sin,
00:08:20.400 | "all who are led by the Spirit are sons of God.
00:08:25.360 | For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,
00:08:31.760 | but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry, 'Abba, Father,' the Spirit
00:08:39.040 | himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are, we are the children of God."
00:08:46.480 | Now, so the bottom line answer to Pete's question about being assured is being confirmed that we're
00:08:55.040 | among the elect, we're among the called, is that the Holy Spirit testifies, bears witness with our
00:09:02.960 | spirit that we are the children of God.
00:09:05.360 | And that witness, that testimony of the Spirit is not, I say emphatically, is not a whisper
00:09:13.840 | in our ear, "Hey, you doubt you're among the elect?
00:09:17.280 | You're among the elect."
00:09:20.400 | I'm whispering.
00:09:21.040 | I'm telling you, it doesn't work that way.
00:09:22.960 | Nobody gets whispers like that.
00:09:25.360 | The evidence, what witnesses do in a courtroom is give evidences, and two of them are mentioned
00:09:32.720 | here.
00:09:33.520 | What the Holy Spirit is doing in us, creating the evidence and the testimony is, number one,
00:09:41.680 | he says, "all who are led by the Spirit are sons of God."
00:09:49.280 | And the logic between verses 13 and 14 makes crystal clear what he means.
00:09:54.880 | He doesn't mean you have to have God's leadership as to whom you're going to marry or what job
00:10:00.560 | you're going to take or where you're going to live.
00:10:02.080 | That's not at all in Paul's mind.
00:10:04.000 | He says, "all who are led by the Spirit are the sons of God."
00:10:11.040 | And that's the ground for the fact that you will live if you make warfare with sin.
00:10:16.960 | And so the point is, if the Holy Spirit is leading Pete into warfare with his sin so
00:10:25.200 | that he hates sin and looks to the Spirit to fight sin, this is the testimony of the
00:10:31.520 | Spirit that he belongs to God.
00:10:34.080 | And the second evidence of the Spirit's testimony is that he's crying from the heart, "Abba,
00:10:42.400 | Father."
00:10:43.360 | Now, think about that.
00:10:44.800 | A computer can be programmed to say, "Abba, Father."
00:10:50.000 | We all know that.
00:10:51.520 | There's nothing in the words that prove anything, and Paul knows that.
00:10:56.560 | The point is, when this cry, "Daddy, Father," arises from a heart with authentic, humble
00:11:06.880 | need of a helpless child craving and desperately in need of a father's wisdom and a father's
00:11:15.920 | care and a father's provision and a father's rescue, a ready heart, ready to submit, like
00:11:23.840 | a trusting child, that is the work of the Holy Spirit.
00:11:28.880 | No human being feels those affections for "Abba, Father" except the Spirit wrought.
00:11:36.400 | Paul said, "You can't say Jesus is Lord, let alone God is Father, without the Holy
00:11:41.760 | Spirit."
00:11:42.160 | So in the end, assurance that we belong to God, we are his child, we're in the promises,
00:11:49.360 | we're among the elect, is a gift of God.
00:11:52.960 | It's a miracle.
00:11:54.560 | But as with other miracles in the Christian life, we don't lie around on our sofa waiting
00:12:02.640 | for a bolt of lightning called assurance.
00:12:05.760 | We do what Peter says.
00:12:07.520 | We confirm our calling and election.
00:12:10.320 | This is war.
00:12:11.280 | There are reasons.
00:12:14.160 | There are seasons of doubt.
00:12:18.000 | Reasons for doubt, seasons for doubt in the Christian life.
00:12:22.240 | That's why Peter said what he said when he said, "Fight for it.
00:12:26.560 | Don't coast.
00:12:28.000 | Confirm your calling and election."
00:12:29.600 | That's why Paul said, "Fight the good fight of faith."
00:12:32.000 | That's why Hebrews 3 says, "Exhort each other every day, lest there be in any of you an
00:12:36.480 | evil heart of unbelief."
00:12:38.160 | This is war.
00:12:39.200 | But God does not want his children to fight and fail in the war.
00:12:46.000 | He means for us to enjoy the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit and the assurance
00:12:53.040 | of our salvation.
00:12:54.000 | Amen.
00:12:55.200 | Thank you, Pastor John.
00:12:56.480 | We act the miracle.
00:12:57.920 | It's such a key phrase that you have coined.
00:13:01.200 | And for us, it's time to break for the weekend.
