we talk about living rich, how to live rich now. 00:00:35.000 |
Expanding on the theme of, and the explanation 00:00:43.000 |
Episode 350 was the immaterial attributes of riches 00:00:59.000 |
Welcome to the Radical Personal Finance Podcast. 00:01:16.000 |
This is the show where we're dedicated to providing you 00:01:21.000 |
and encouragement you need to live a rich and prosperous life. 00:01:25.000 |
You need to live a rich and meaningful life now 00:01:42.000 |
I've been using this slogan for a little while 00:01:48.000 |
without ever actually explaining it in detail 00:01:52.000 |
And so here is part of the series, I'm carefully doing that. 00:01:56.000 |
I really believe that the information I shared 00:01:59.000 |
talking about the immaterial aspects of riches 00:02:02.000 |
is truly the much more important aspect of riches. 00:02:05.000 |
And you'll hear even that theme come out in today's show. 00:02:09.000 |
However, we're going to talk about some of the things 00:02:14.000 |
And my hope is that I'm gonna be able to give you 00:02:20.000 |
some things that you can incorporate into your own life 00:02:26.000 |
regardless of your actual financial situation. 00:02:34.000 |
well, hopefully you'll be able to tell me that I succeeded. 00:02:37.000 |
Now, even this show is gonna be a little bit different 00:02:42.000 |
If you were to do a web search for, you know, 00:02:50.000 |
You know, in a moment I'll talk about, for example, 00:02:56.000 |
That's a very sensible and thoughtful thing to do. 00:03:01.000 |
you can probably spend about a third of your life 00:03:04.000 |
and you today can probably access the same quality of bed 00:03:10.000 |
that the world's richest person could access. 00:03:15.000 |
it'll cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, 00:03:20.000 |
and that might very well be what you should do, 00:03:24.000 |
is go ahead and invest in the world's greatest bed. 00:03:31.000 |
that you'll probably get more value in living a rich life 00:03:49.000 |
whereas you're going to spend a third of your life in bed. 00:03:53.000 |
This is the type of thinking that most people don't do. 00:04:16.000 |
the benefits of the world that you're already enjoying 00:04:30.000 |
And I know I tend to be very philosophical at times, 00:04:35.000 |
but that's because there's a tremendous amount of value 00:04:40.000 |
that people many times don't take the time to appreciate. 00:04:44.000 |
And I want to emphasize to you here at the beginning 00:04:49.000 |
is already enjoying that you probably are not appreciating. 00:04:54.000 |
sponsor for today's show is Paladin Registry. 00:05:04.000 |
I'm no longer technically a financial advisor. 00:05:23.000 |
But I know that many of you still have a need 00:05:24.000 |
of working with a professional financial advisor. 00:05:28.000 |
"Okay, Joshua, I like you kind of pulling back 00:05:52.000 |
They see how long they've been in the business. 00:06:02.000 |
And then if they're accepted into the registry, 00:06:54.000 |
Finding and retaining a good financial advisor 00:07:21.000 |
But just 10 things that I thoroughly appreciate 00:08:06.000 |
It's truly one of the most incredible technologies 00:08:15.000 |
go and spend some time living without electricity. 00:08:29.000 |
just figure out a way to try living without electricity 00:08:38.000 |
And now think about the panorama of human history 00:08:56.000 |
This is one way that you're already living rich. 00:09:15.000 |
we talk about going and living off grid somewhere 00:09:31.000 |
in the middle of Africa and live in a mud hut. 00:09:33.000 |
And I had to settle that before I became a Christian. 00:09:37.000 |
"Listen, if we ever have to go live in Africa 00:09:43.000 |
that makes living in a mud hut really, really good." 00:09:46.000 |
I mean, I pay attention to the battery technology 00:09:59.000 |
where even if you don't have electric wire to your house, 00:10:05.000 |
but if any of you are going to go live in a mud hut somewhere, 00:10:16.000 |
Because for a few hundreds to a couple thousand dollars, 00:10:21.000 |
you can use and harness the power of electricity 00:10:25.000 |
to create a very comfortable life for yourself, 00:10:30.000 |
And it's incredible the technology that exists. 00:10:33.000 |
because you've got a wire coming to your house. 00:10:35.000 |
Recognize the fact that you are already living a rich life 00:10:42.000 |
Number two on my list is easy cooking technologies. 00:10:46.000 |
It kind of goes hand in hand with electricity. 00:10:47.000 |
Some of you cook on electricity, which is fine. 00:10:50.000 |
But just the sheer access to easy cooking technologies 00:10:56.000 |
I'm going to reference in some of these early things 00:10:58.000 |
some personal experiences and some family experiences. 00:11:08.000 |
and all they had to cook on every day was a wood stove. 00:11:11.000 |
Now, I think it's fun to go and cook on an open fire. 00:11:13.000 |
I like to do that, go camping and cook on a bed of coals. 00:11:28.000 |
of daily things like cooking are a tremendous problem, 00:11:34.000 |
And cooking technologies are a tremendous problem 00:11:40.000 |
who don't have access to easy cooking technologies 00:11:42.000 |
spend many hours of their week collecting fuel 00:11:55.000 |
has a substantial impact on shortening their lifespan 00:12:00.000 |
and all of the noxious chemicals they breathe 00:12:36.000 |
that make life just tremendously, tremendously easy. 00:12:41.000 |
I've been, one of the things on my list to buy 00:12:43.000 |
is I've been wanting to buy a small rocket stove 00:13:03.000 |
and they make an incredibly useful cooking flame. 00:13:06.000 |
And you can buy the things for, I don't know, 00:13:14.000 |
You can trot down to your local big box store 00:13:25.000 |
if you buy the type that runs on a dual fuel stove 00:13:27.000 |
and you can cook anywhere in the world so easily. 00:13:52.000 |
was you see these things about the good old days 00:13:56.000 |
in the good old days doesn't want to go back. 00:14:00.000 |
is not necessarily the easiest thing in the world. 00:14:41.000 |
Almost every one of you listening to this show 00:14:45.000 |
and these things make your life so much better. 00:14:55.000 |
And again, the development of new technologies, 00:14:57.000 |
things that have come on on the heating side, 00:15:00.000 |
I see very few good ones on the cooling side, 00:15:20.000 |
I'll short circuit this one and go on to the next one. 00:15:22.000 |
Labor-saving appliances such as washing machines. 00:15:30.000 |
of cleaning your clothes without a washing machine, 00:15:33.000 |
I encourage you to figure out how to do that. 00:16:16.000 |
and had the washing board with the ridges on it 00:16:22.000 |
And about five minutes later, I was exhausted. 00:16:39.000 |
You just pop it in, push the button, click start, 00:17:05.000 |
we all enjoy easy and practically free communication 00:17:15.000 |
You expect to get instant access to communication 00:17:23.000 |
the first place you go is to Twitter or to Facebook 00:17:26.000 |
and see what's happening live and in real time. 00:17:30.000 |
This is so new in terms of the history of the world 00:17:34.000 |
and yet we're so used to it at this point in time. 00:17:42.000 |
my father was in the Navy and he was in the submarine 00:17:48.000 |
I think he went on three different six-month cruises. 00:17:52.000 |
so at first he was gone for six months at a time 00:17:55.000 |
and of course they would sometimes write letters 00:18:06.000 |
So if there was meeting them at a port of call 00:18:15.000 |
Six months and what you get is a letter here and there 00:18:25.000 |
you can talk to somebody on the other side of the world 00:18:55.000 |
and they're doing the Alaska homesteading thing. 00:18:57.000 |
His birthday present to her at that point in time 00:19:26.000 |
and you probably can't afford to travel home in person 00:19:38.000 |
And yet we forget about the fact of how rich we are. 00:19:47.000 |
we're kind of crossing the barrier of immaterial communication abilities 00:19:54.000 |
Next one which is kind of correlated with this one 00:19:59.000 |
no matter your level of income or level of wealth, 00:20:02.000 |
enjoys access to a global transportation infrastructure 00:20:26.000 |
I know, I think I'm suffering when that happens. 00:20:38.000 |
This is something that the richest people in the world 00:20:53.000 |
and you think about how incredibly challenging 00:21:09.000 |
U.S., go and read about the U.S. immigration. 00:21:17.000 |
what a hundred and something years ago faced. 00:21:25.000 |
going from the east coast of the United States 00:21:57.000 |
and I just sat down and stared at the wagon ruts 00:22:06.000 |
but this rock, these ruts were seven feet deep 00:22:14.000 |
And these are worn by people pushing hand carts 00:22:23.000 |
a couple hundred bucks gets you on an airplane 00:22:31.000 |
and you can drive yourself across the country 00:22:51.000 |
paid 60 bucks to fly from West Palm Beach, Florida 00:23:07.000 |
the things you're expecting on a show like this. 00:23:25.000 |
to where you are without comfortable furniture, 00:23:44.000 |
one of the things was my first time to the Philippines 00:23:55.000 |
We weren't traveling in Western vacation tourist hotels 00:24:06.000 |
their traditional dwelling is something called a nipa hut 00:24:09.000 |
and it's a bamboo structure with a thatch roof 00:24:15.000 |
is just to roll out a bamboo mat out onto the floor 00:24:34.000 |
and I mean picture something like a front door welcome mat, 00:24:41.000 |
You roll out a bamboo mat on a wooden plank floor 00:24:50.000 |
but then the other thing is that all of your things to sit on, 00:25:00.000 |
or you're sitting in like those plastic lawn chairs 00:25:04.000 |
those are very common throughout much of the world 00:25:23.000 |
you go for a month without sitting on something soft 00:25:34.000 |
Yet, when's the last time you looked at that chair and said, 00:25:36.000 |
"Man, I'm so glad that I'm rich enough to afford this chair." 00:25:43.000 |
that you have access to the world's information 00:26:09.000 |
and it's lifting millions of people out of poverty 00:26:13.000 |
and it's making options and ideas available to you 00:26:15.000 |
that have never been available in the history of the world. 00:26:21.000 |
because already this section has taken me longer 00:26:27.000 |
that you can access just about any piece of information 00:26:34.000 |
Next, recognize the fact that you have access 00:26:48.000 |
and people say, "Josh, you don't spend that much money." 00:27:00.000 |
you have access to so much healthy food for cheap. 00:27:13.000 |
If you look at the poverty statistics in the United States, 00:27:53.000 |
Just saying, you go down to the local grocery store 00:27:55.000 |
and you can find all kinds of great food for cheap. 00:28:02.000 |
Find out where all of the non-white people in your town shop. 00:28:07.000 |
and all of a sudden, you'll find that you cut your grocery budget 00:28:19.000 |
Finally, you have the liberty to make choices. 00:28:23.000 |
You have the liberty to choose where you live. 00:28:40.000 |
So appreciate the fact that you can make a change. 00:28:50.000 |
There are some things that are beyond your control. 00:28:55.000 |
But many of the things that you look at in your life, 00:28:59.000 |
Whether you made them consciously or unconsciously, 00:29:19.000 |
to be living in the United States of America. 00:30:02.000 |
Every one of you who's listening to the sound of my voice 00:30:12.000 |
than was available to the richest person in the world 00:30:19.000 |
no matter your income or your level of wealth, 00:30:25.000 |
as well as the richest person in the world today. 00:30:32.000 |
at exactly the same temperature as Bill Gates. 00:30:40.000 |
but you can maintain your house at the same temperature. 00:30:43.000 |
What's going to make a bigger difference in your life? 00:30:47.000 |
that are all too hot or too cold for your comfort? 00:31:02.000 |
versus the 140 rooms that aren't comfortable for you. 00:31:07.000 |
So Bill Gates doesn't have anything that you can't have. 00:31:19.000 |
and now you can have that room as cold as you want. 00:31:35.000 |
that somehow he has a better bed than you do? 00:31:38.000 |
Yeah, it might have a gold bed frame and silk sheets, 00:31:47.000 |
but does that make a difference when you're sleeping? 00:32:05.000 |
works just as well as the air conditioner does 00:32:10.000 |
and they can't drive theirs any faster on the road than I can. 00:32:16.000 |
Now, they can pay off the cop and pay the speeding ticket, 00:32:25.000 |
and if I want to spend a weekend at the races, 00:32:43.000 |
and he comes down here to the Palm Beach International Airport 00:32:46.000 |
and he always parks the thing right out in front 00:32:54.000 |
He's got this big black airplane and it says Trump on it 00:32:58.000 |
So you always know when Donald Trump's in town 00:33:00.000 |
and I take guests by and show them Mar-a-Lago on Palm Beach 00:33:03.000 |
as part of kind of like my standard Palm Beach tour. 00:33:05.000 |
And then I drive past every week going to a friend's house. 00:33:08.000 |
I drive past his golf course here in the one that's – 00:33:12.000 |
it's just south of the Palm Beach International Airport 00:33:20.000 |
I think it's a few hundred thousand bucks to join 00:33:22.000 |
and tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands a year for the membership. 00:33:27.000 |
But I always laugh because that golf course looks up on the Palm Beach County prison. 00:33:36.000 |
and the jail, the local Palm Beach County jail looks down on the golf course. 00:33:41.000 |
I always just chuckle thinking of what they're seeing from up above from their cell, 00:33:45.000 |
looking out the window and looking down at Trump's golf course. 00:33:48.000 |
I always laugh because the roads around the golf course are not all that great. 00:33:56.000 |
What I mean is the neighborhoods are not all of that. 00:34:03.000 |
And so I just chuckle because here you have a billionaire 00:34:07.000 |
and all of the billionaires and multimillionaires who are members of the golf course 00:34:11.000 |
and they drive on the same roads that you and I do 00:34:15.000 |
through the same kind of mediocre neighborhoods to get to the golf course. 00:34:20.000 |
And if you want to golf, you can go down and you can play golf at the public – 00:34:25.000 |
at the – it's south of Palm Beach, Lantana, public golf course. 00:34:34.000 |
But it's really good and has a much better view where you can see the ocean instead of the jail. 00:34:42.000 |
You can buy for yourself the same internet access speeds as the richest people in the world 00:34:47.000 |
and you get all the same information as they can. 00:34:49.000 |
Now, obviously, there are things that break down. 00:34:52.000 |
From what I'm told, I read Warren Buffett's book Snowball a number of years ago 00:34:56.000 |
and he said the one thing that I don't ever want to give up about being a billionaire is having a private airplane. 00:35:04.000 |
It doesn't take all that much money to buy a NetJets membership 00:35:06.000 |
and get all the benefits of the private airplane without all the hassle. 00:35:11.000 |
But if you look and recognize the fact that you have more luxury goods in your life, 00:35:15.000 |
the phone on your hip gives you more access to the world, the information of the world, 00:35:21.000 |
than the president of the United States had 25 years ago. 00:35:37.000 |
Now, let's move past batteries and solar power and jets and composting toilets 00:35:44.000 |
Most of us are familiar with the idea of things versus experiences. 00:35:48.000 |
And I would just emphasize that in general, you're going to appreciate and value the money and time that you spend on experiences 00:35:55.000 |
much more than the money and time that you spend on things. 00:35:58.000 |
But there are some ways that you can live rich now 00:36:02.000 |
and have some of the material things dramatically influence the benefit of your experience. 00:36:11.000 |
You can make your house feel like a rich person's house 00:36:16.000 |
if you learn how a rich person makes their house feel rich. 00:36:20.000 |
And you can do it with any size of house and probably with any budget. 00:36:24.000 |
Now, for the rest of the show, I'm not talking about people who are in survival mode. 00:36:29.000 |
I'm talking about normal middle class to upper middle class households. 00:36:33.000 |
But these techniques are still applicable to your situation. 00:36:37.000 |
And my proof of that would be if you look at some things, if you look at sailboat design, 00:36:43.000 |
if you look at tiny house design, if you look at some of these little interesting niches 00:36:48.000 |
where people apply good design to very small spaces, 00:36:51.000 |
you'll find that they can create a luxurious feeling in a tiny space. 00:36:55.000 |
So even if you're living in a one-bedroom apartment, 00:36:58.000 |
good design will take you to making that space feel rich and feel luxurious. 00:37:03.000 |
But a couple of suggestions for you to think about how to live rich now with your house. 00:37:07.000 |
First, choose location over just about anything else 00:37:11.000 |
because the location of your house will drive your lifestyle more than anything else. 00:37:20.000 |
We who are here in Florida like to taunt those of you who live in the snowy north 00:37:25.000 |
Now, if you want to – you can live in a big fancy house, 00:37:28.000 |
but if you can't bear to go outside in February, it may not be as much fun. 00:37:34.000 |
And you can have a small little house with a beautiful garden out back 00:37:37.000 |
that you can go outside in February and you'll enjoy it a lot more. 00:37:40.000 |
Now, there's geographic location with regard to climates and climate zones, 00:37:44.000 |
but there's also geographic location with regard to your city, your town. 00:37:49.000 |
If you want to live near the water, if you want to live away from the water, 00:37:52.000 |
if you want to live in the country, if you want to live in the city, 00:37:55.000 |
whatever those things are, if you choose your house carefully and choose a location, 00:37:59.000 |
that will dramatically impact your experience and your enjoyment of it. 00:38:05.000 |
And although there are exceptions, you can usually find a place to live 00:38:13.000 |
This last Sunday night, we went for a walk on Palm Beach Island. 00:38:16.000 |
In Palm Beach, there's this thing called the Lake Trail, 00:38:19.000 |
and it cruises right along the intercoastal here and right up behind the mansions. 00:38:26.000 |
And you're walking past on the Lake Trail and you're walking past the backyards 00:38:33.000 |
But I was just always interested and I always pay attention to these details. 00:38:36.000 |
The street that I parked on in order for us to have access to the Lake Trail 00:38:41.000 |
for our Sunday evening walk, the street that I parked on had a small apartment building there. 00:38:46.000 |
Now, it's not an apartment building like normal. 00:38:51.000 |
But I knew it was an apartment building because I had known somebody who lived there at one time. 00:38:55.000 |
And you could rent a small apartment right there on Palm Beach Island, 00:38:58.000 |
right next to the $25 million house and have the experiences and the enjoyment 00:39:04.000 |
of the Palm Beach lifestyle for a couple thousand dollars a month. 00:39:10.000 |
In almost any zip code, there's a way you could live there. 00:39:15.000 |
The best houses usually have the best locations. 00:39:18.000 |
Then think carefully about the amenities that you actually want and buy them. 00:39:23.000 |
Most people don't want the amenity of 48 extra rooms. 00:39:31.000 |
You might need to buy a house with 48 extra rooms. 00:39:37.000 |
And depending on the size of your family, you can probably only occupy a certain 00:39:41.000 |
relatively small number of rooms at one time. 00:39:45.000 |
So your enjoyment of your house is not going to be based upon how many rooms it has 00:39:51.000 |
It's going to be based upon the amenities in those rooms. 00:39:56.000 |
If you bought a large house with lots of extra rooms but you didn't have a functional kitchen, 00:40:03.000 |
you just had a basic kitchen, would you get as much enjoyment out of that as you would 00:40:10.000 |
if you bought a smaller house with an extremely functional, extremely luxurious-feeling kitchen? 00:40:17.000 |
If you want to live rich now, start with a kitchen because in many houses that's the heart of the home. 00:40:23.000 |
Take the house that you have, hire an interior designer and a kitchen designer, 00:40:33.000 |
You will probably not recoup the money when you sell the house. 00:40:41.000 |
If you have a backyard, you can have a backyard that's empty and bare, 00:40:47.000 |
Well, you could go buy a fancier house, a bigger house perhaps, 00:40:51.000 |
but you could also go ahead and spend $10,000 or $20,000 landscaping the backyard. 00:40:56.000 |
If you want a pool, put one in. If you don't want one, take it out. 00:40:59.000 |
If you want a garden installed, install a garden. 00:41:06.000 |
Install something that makes you want to be there, 00:41:09.000 |
and create the house with the amenities that you desire, and go ahead and buy them. 00:41:13.000 |
Upgrade the things in the house that add pleasure for you. 00:41:17.000 |
If you accomplish location and amenities, you'll be living a rich lifestyle no matter where you are. 00:41:29.000 |
Those are usually the two things that make the biggest difference, 00:41:44.000 |
You might reach a point in time where you can upgrade your furnishings. 00:41:50.000 |
If you want to create a feeling of richness, don't buy the cheap tacky stuff. 00:41:56.000 |
Go ahead and spend the money on the good stuff. 00:41:59.000 |
You don't need to buy the $20 million painting, but go ahead and put a painting that's classy. 00:42:04.000 |
If you don't have the skill for it, hire the designer. 00:42:06.000 |
Create the house that you want to come home to. 00:42:11.000 |
So you can live rich now in the house that you are if you pay attention to it. 00:42:17.000 |
This one's always hard for me because I don't want to spend money on this stuff, 00:42:19.000 |
but it is important to spend money on these things, especially if you want to live rich. 00:42:25.000 |
another budget category that many of us spend a lot of money on. 00:42:30.000 |
One of the keys with the car is think carefully, but if you want to live rich, 00:42:34.000 |
you're probably better off buying more of a luxury car, a really good car, and owning it for a long time. 00:42:42.000 |
One of the things that's destructive if you look at the habits of those who are poor is they often buy – 00:42:48.000 |
and here I'm not talking about the subsistence poor but people who are just lower class. 00:42:54.000 |
They often buy cheap cars and are always getting rid of them 00:42:57.000 |
instead of buying a car that they want to have for a long period of time. 00:43:01.000 |
You can buy a $9,000 Kia Rio and that's an amazing automobile. 00:43:06.000 |
If you were in the first half of the show, I talked to you about the fact that Kia Rio has a radio in it. 00:43:11.000 |
You can listen to stuff from your phone from all over the world. 00:43:13.000 |
I talked about how you can drive comfortably on the highway. 00:43:15.000 |
I talked about the fact that the AC works so great. 00:43:20.000 |
Now let's just talk about what it's actually like to be in. 00:43:22.000 |
You're in a car. It doesn't feel all that great on the highway. 00:43:25.000 |
It kind of feels a little bit cheap. You're surrounded by plastic. 00:43:28.000 |
Well, you could spend $9,000 on a Kia Rio or you could go and spend $9,000 on a nice luxury car that's a few years old 00:43:35.000 |
and your experience in that luxury car will be dramatically different. 00:43:40.000 |
If you want to live rich, consider buying a really nice car from a really good brand and owning it for a really long time. 00:43:52.000 |
But when you actually look at luxury goods and you figure out what's the price that you pay 00:43:58.000 |
and what's the price at the value of it when you sell it and how long do you own it, 00:44:02.000 |
the price that you pay up front is not always the most important thing. 00:44:07.000 |
Length of ownership will probably be the most dramatic impact to your budget. 00:44:15.000 |
So what I mean is all cars are going to depreciate, but the longer you keep the car, the less costly the depreciation is. 00:44:25.000 |
If you just want to decrease the amount of money that you spend on cars and you want to increase the amount of enjoyment, 00:44:30.000 |
go ahead and buy that new car or save the money and buy the car that's one to three years old. 00:44:36.000 |
Buy the newer car, but just buy the car that you're going to be happy keeping for a long time. 00:44:40.000 |
That will dramatically decrease your cost and dramatically increase your enjoyment. 00:44:52.000 |
Here I'm just going through budget categories. 00:44:54.000 |
This is how I came up with just some of the things that I said. 00:44:58.000 |
You can eat the best food in the world on the budget that you have now if you simply pay attention to it. 00:45:06.000 |
You may not be able at this point in time to go out and buy a $1,500 meal, 00:45:12.000 |
but you could take the components of that meal, look up the recipe online where some chef has deconstructed whatever the menu is at that exclusive restaurant, 00:45:23.000 |
practice their techniques, buy the food, and you could create that great food for yourself. 00:45:28.000 |
Cooking great food for yourself is a great way to eat rich. 00:45:35.000 |
If you want to cook for quality food, buy it, cook it yourself. 00:45:37.000 |
There are many tips and techniques if you want to go to restaurants. 00:45:40.000 |
You can go to the world's greatest restaurants. 00:45:43.000 |
If you go at a different time of day, you can afford to be there. 00:45:46.000 |
I've done this frequently where I might go to a restaurant, again, here in Palm Beach. 00:45:50.000 |
When I just say Palm Beach, it's one of the most expensive places in the world for stuff, and you can spend as much or as little. 00:45:56.000 |
I'll often go to some of the expensive restaurants but go for lunch instead of dinner. 00:46:02.000 |
You get the same experience, same quality of food, but a fourth of the price. 00:46:09.000 |
Or if you want to go and have the experience, then go to the restaurant, enjoy the experience, but get appetizers and drinks and skip the three-course meal. 00:46:19.000 |
All kinds of ways to do it, all kinds of ways to take things like the restaurants and enjoy them on less just by being slightly out of it, out of sync. 00:46:30.000 |
Another great way to live a rich lifestyle with regard to food is develop diverse tastes and be willing to try something new and something special. 00:46:39.000 |
In dining, and here I'm just talking about dining out, if you have diverse tastes or if you're willing to try something different, you can experience all kinds of things for cheap. 00:46:50.000 |
You can live a really adventurous lifestyle with regard to your food that doesn't cost that much. 00:46:57.000 |
But if you only eat a certain type of cooking, yes, you might have to go to the expensive restaurant. 00:47:02.000 |
Many other ideas on food, but let's keep going. 00:47:06.000 |
I'm coming to the end of the time that I want to keep this show to today. 00:47:13.000 |
Simple suggestion for you, do you like the water that you drink? 00:47:17.000 |
For a couple hundred or a few thousand bucks depending on how you actually choose to install it, you can get the world's greatest water that just tastes fantastic, and you can drink that. 00:47:32.000 |
If you think about the things that stress you out, I focus on this because many people think drinks, "Oh, I immediately got to go to my wine cellar. 00:47:39.000 |
I immediately got to go to some expensive type of thing." 00:47:47.000 |
We're now on a city water system, and I bought a water filter. 00:47:51.000 |
The one I bought is this thing called a Big Berkey, and then I bought the chlorine and the fluoride filters for it. 00:47:57.000 |
I put the city water through that, filters out the chlorine, the fluoride, takes out any of the minerals that happen to be in it. 00:48:07.000 |
A couple hundred and something bucks up front. 00:48:10.000 |
New filters every couple of years, and the cool thing about it is you can actually pour pond water in that thing, and it'll create safe water to drink. 00:48:22.000 |
I spent years at a house that, when I was younger, spent years at a house that didn't like the water, and then finally, my parents went ahead and got a nice water filtration system. 00:48:30.000 |
That little upgrade made a bigger difference in our lifestyle than just about anything else. 00:48:41.000 |
We have this awesome showerhead that has great shower pressure, and every single time, it's like being in this incredible—it's just a great experience. 00:48:55.000 |
I feel like living rich even though we're in a cheap apartment. 00:48:59.000 |
I mean, there's so many things you could go to, to other types of drinks and other things like that. 00:49:03.000 |
Just recognize the fact of the incredible variety that's available to you. 00:49:09.000 |
The incredible variety that's available to you in terms of different things to drink, whether alcoholic or nonalcoholic, and the incredible quality that's available to you. 00:49:23.000 |
Probably the people who are the snobbiest in—the people who are the snobbiest is people who are really into different types of alcoholic drinks. 00:49:35.000 |
I just think it's funny because people are really snobby about their particular drink of choice. 00:49:42.000 |
If you have one near you, go check it out if you've never been there. 00:49:46.000 |
It's practically the size of a large grocery store, and all it has is alcohol. 00:49:54.000 |
I don't think you could buy a bad drink in that store. 00:50:02.000 |
It doesn't matter if you're a multimillionaire. 00:50:04.000 |
You can't get a bigger beer selection than what you and I can get of walking into a Total Wine and more. 00:50:10.000 |
And you can buy the most expensive bottle of beer they have for almost nothing, a few bucks. 00:50:28.000 |
I go to Total Wine and more, and they sell boxed wine. 00:50:37.000 |
I do enjoy a good red wine, but I'm not a wine snob. 00:50:42.000 |
Because there's such a low-class stigma associated with boxed wine, I'm convinced that the winemakers really only put good wine in boxes. 00:50:51.000 |
I think you could probably buy some bad bottles of wine, probably not at a big store like Total Wine and more, 00:50:55.000 |
but at a corner gas station or whatever, just super cheap. 00:51:00.000 |
But I don't think you can buy a bad box of wine because I think they know that they've got to overcome people's snobbery when it comes to buying something that comes in a bottle with a cork instead of buying something that comes in a box. 00:51:11.000 |
And the technology of a box of wine is so vastly superior to the technology of a bottle. 00:51:17.000 |
They're trying to make that change, but people just aren't accepting it. 00:51:22.000 |
So at Total Wine and more, you can get these boxes of wine and they often put them on sale. 00:51:27.000 |
And they'll also – their wine person, their staff will put on these different boxes, staff's choice. 00:51:36.000 |
So there are four bottles of wine that go into a box. 00:51:41.000 |
So when you buy a box of wine, you're buying the equivalent of four bottles. 00:51:44.000 |
And at Total Wine and more, they put these things on sale for $12, which means you've got a cost of $3 a bottle. 00:51:53.000 |
So I buy these boxes when they go on sale and I serve them in my house with different dinner guests. 00:51:59.000 |
And I have never served this particular brand to a guest and had them say, "Man, Joshua, this is terrible wine." 00:52:07.000 |
Usually I just serve it, but almost always I get an unsolicited comment, "Man, this wine is great." 00:52:11.000 |
And then I tell them what I just told you, box of wine, three boxes of bottle, but it's really good wine. 00:52:18.000 |
You're not going to get a bad box of wine because they know they got to make it good. 00:52:22.000 |
Now, you might not like that particular type of wine. 00:52:25.000 |
You might not like that particular type of drink, but it's probably not all that bad. 00:52:39.000 |
Clothes, how many clothes can you wear at one time? 00:52:42.000 |
The mistake that poor people make is they buy lots of clothes that they bought on impulse that are cheaply made, that they don't like to wear, that don't fit them very well. 00:52:55.000 |
The thing that rich people do is they buy clothes that are quality, that fit them well, and that they feel good in. 00:53:01.000 |
So choose quality over quantity and buy stuff you love and own things that fit you. 00:53:06.000 |
It's a challenge for me. I'm in the process of trying to revamp my wardrobe. 00:53:13.000 |
You can only wear one set of clothes at a time. 00:53:17.000 |
And the even more telling thing about clothes, it's usually not the clothes that make the person. 00:53:22.000 |
It's the body under the clothes that makes the clothes look good. 00:53:28.000 |
It doesn't require lots of money to get a better body. 00:53:31.000 |
It requires discipline and effort and a little bit of knowledge. 00:53:37.000 |
I just want to point out to you that you can access, if you pay attention, you can access the world's greatest leisure time opportunities on a pretty inexpensive budget. 00:53:51.000 |
So many people fall into this trap of going to the movies every week. 00:53:54.000 |
And they don't ever think about going to the theater. 00:53:56.000 |
They don't ever think about taking in a musical or an opera if you're into that or those things. 00:54:01.000 |
In your city, there are tons of those types of opportunities that are available. 00:54:05.000 |
$50 ticket, $30 ticket, that's called living rich. 00:54:11.000 |
Fly to New York, set up a New York weekend and go to Broadway all weekend. 00:54:22.000 |
If you pay attention and you prioritize some of these experiences, some of these rich person experiences, you can experience them without spending a ton of money. 00:54:32.000 |
I know some of you like to have timeshares and second houses and things like that. 00:54:39.000 |
I can make something of a case for a second house in some circumstances, especially if it's going to be a bonding place for your family. 00:54:47.000 |
Oh, we always go to this cabin in the woods and that's kind of our special thing. 00:54:50.000 |
But the majority of the time, man, you spend so much money on that stuff and it's so unnecessary. 00:54:56.000 |
It's far easier and cheaper and less hassle to go and stay at a five-star hotel and change it up every couple of years when you want to go to somewhere different. 00:55:08.000 |
You can go to the best resort town in the world and you can stay there for a week in a great hotel. 00:55:16.000 |
You don't need to have a house there that sits empty all the time. 00:55:19.000 |
Why would you want to have another house to take care of, another house to pay for, another house to deal with, another set of maintenance problems to deal with? 00:55:29.000 |
Just go and stay in a hotel and have a great time. 00:55:33.000 |
There are so many of these ways that if you look and you practice, you'll start to open up opportunities to yourselves that you never knew and you can live an incredible lifestyle. 00:55:49.000 |
If you want to live rich, it's a decision and it's a skill set. 00:55:56.000 |
Part of it is just enjoying and appreciating some of the things I talked about, the immaterial things, richness of diversity. 00:56:03.000 |
I so value so many of the experiences I've had that on the outside are nothing comfortable. 00:56:12.000 |
You find rich people and poor people alike seeking things that drag them out of what their norm is, participating in these hardcore athletic endeavors or making themselves miserable doing some kind of ultra sport thing. 00:56:29.000 |
Comfort is not the goal, but you get that diversity of experience. 00:56:37.000 |
But you can access these things without the money. 00:56:42.000 |
If you're willing to accept the difficult things and enjoy them as part of the story. 00:56:47.000 |
I so value that time that when I shared the story about sleeping on wooden floors without a mattress. 00:56:58.000 |
But it was a rich experience for me for many reasons, not just because of the physical hardship. 00:57:12.000 |
And the other cool thing when you're experiencing these things, if you have the ability to appreciate the extremes, you can experience the extremes. 00:57:20.000 |
That same trip to the Philippines, went and had a friend, a Filipino friend who was a chef at one of the five-star resorts there. 00:57:27.000 |
And we went and enjoyed a meal there at the five-star resort. 00:57:38.000 |
I've done this in every country, every place in the world. 00:57:42.000 |
You can go into the fanciest bar, the fanciest restaurant, the fanciest hotel and go and stay there for a day and have a great experience. 00:57:51.000 |
If you're in Hong Kong, you can go to the – what's the fancy hotel with all the Rolls Royces? 00:57:58.000 |
You can go to the Peninsula Hotel and you can go and have their tea. 00:58:01.000 |
Here in Palm Beach, you can go and have Breaker's Brunch. 00:58:13.000 |
It requires a little bit of thinking and planning. 00:58:21.000 |
There is a good book that I read years ago on this topic. 00:58:24.000 |
It was given away for a long time as a freebie by Michael Masterson. 00:58:27.000 |
I think you can get it on Amazon, but it was available as a freebie. 00:58:30.000 |
I don't know if they still have it on the Early to Rise site. 00:58:34.000 |
If you do a web search for Living Rich Michael Masterson, you'll find some of his essays. 00:58:39.000 |
He's one of the guys, a rich guy who's done a good job of writing on some of these topics. 00:58:43.000 |
He goes into all these different stories and different studies. 00:58:46.000 |
It's a great niche for one of you people to pick up as well and talk more about how to live rich. 00:58:53.000 |
I've just decided to do kind of a cursory overview in this show. 00:59:02.000 |
Lots of other ways to do it, but I promise you, you can live rich now. 00:59:07.000 |
You can take your little apartment and you can decorate it beautifully. 00:59:10.000 |
You can more want to be there than the biggest house. 00:59:19.000 |
These things do not always require a lot of money. 00:59:23.000 |
Yes, there are times that it is going to require a lot of money. 00:59:26.000 |
You might need to put in a $30,000 kitchen and that might be appropriate at some stage of your life. 00:59:32.000 |
If you start with the mindset I tried to share at the beginning of the show, 00:59:36.000 |
give me a cast iron pan and a Coleman stove and the right seasonings and the right knowledge, 00:59:43.000 |
and I can make the world's greatest steak on a picnic table at the beach. 00:59:57.000 |
And a skill you can get with a little bit of effort, a little bit of practice and YouTube, 01:00:03.000 |
which is why I started with all those things at the beginning of the show. 01:00:06.000 |
Thank you all so much for listening. Appreciate it. 01:00:10.000 |
