00:03:30.640 | I've heard you a year or two ago say we're in this rental car apocalypse,

00:03:39.080 | We were way out ahead of this thing.

00:03:40.600 | We were seeing sort of the bleeding edge of the problems.

00:03:43.560 | 2021 as spring came along and people started to get vaccinated and the whole

00:03:48.920 | rental car industry just basically imploded at that point, it was almost

00:03:52.280 | impossible to find rentals and things were going for $250 a day, people were

00:03:56.280 | renting U-Haul trucks because they couldn't find rental cars.

00:03:59.040 | The good news is that things have gotten significantly better.

00:04:02.040 | We're definitely not back to quote unquote normal.

00:04:05.040 | Rates are still much higher than average, but the inventory

00:04:07.640 | situation has let up a little bit.

00:04:09.240 | The rental car industry, if we just do a little bit of mini history, going

00:04:13.000 | back to the beginning of COVID, when COVID first hit the rental car company

00:04:16.880 | saw their demand drop by up to 90% and they basically went into survival mode.

00:04:22.240 | They had to sell off as many cars as they could as quickly as they

00:04:25.040 | could just in order to survive.

00:04:26.880 | And Hertz still lives today, but they went through a bankruptcy and the

00:04:30.920 | existing shareholders were basically wiped out and there were a couple of

00:04:33.880 | other smaller companies that either went through reorganization or bankruptcy.

00:04:37.560 | So the industry was reeling from that, but for the most part, the industry

00:04:41.400 | sold off inventory that it had to, and it got healthy and demand was sort of

00:04:45.640 | right-sized for what the inventory was at the time.

00:04:48.200 | But if you fast forward to 2021, people started to get vaccinated.

00:04:51.840 | They were just tired of being at home.

00:04:53.320 | They wanted to get out and the demand just completely outstripped the supply.

00:04:58.080 | And the rental car companies just assumed that they'd be able to acquire more

00:05:01.400 | vehicles when that demand came back.

00:05:03.320 | But the problem is that idea ran headlong into the reality of this

00:05:07.280 | semiconductor shortage, this chip shortage.

00:05:09.320 | And for those of you who don't know, the average car has anywhere from

00:05:12.440 | 1000 to 2000 computer chips in it.

00:05:14.600 | And if you can't get those computer chips, you're basically just looking

00:05:17.320 | at a giant doorstop with four wheels.

00:05:19.680 | And that's essentially what was happening with the auto manufacturers.

00:05:22.200 | These cars were sitting on the lots half completed, and they just

00:05:25.320 | literally couldn't get them into the dealerships in a completed way.

00:05:28.520 | And that was affecting the entire auto industry and no one more so

00:05:33.800 | We needed these vehicles to service this demand that was quickly coming back.

00:05:37.040 | So are we still in this state or what are things like now?

00:05:40.560 | I remember hearing states, entire states were sold out of rental cars.

00:05:44.600 | People were nervous that you'd show up and there's no car.

00:05:47.520 | Is it a little better now or a lot better?

00:05:50.640 | But interestingly, the problems have sort of moved and morphed.

00:05:54.080 | Now there are strangely entire countries that are sold out of rental cars.

00:05:57.600 | And by that, I mean that almost the entire country of Canada, it's almost

00:06:01.880 | impossible to find a rental car.

00:06:03.320 | Places like Calgary and Vancouver and Victoria and Toronto, massive

00:06:07.360 | shortage of rental cars right now.

00:06:08.640 | And we're not quite sure why Canada is being hit so hard, but the US, the

00:06:12.880 | lower 48 states are in better shape.

00:06:15.320 | Save for the national park areas, Glacier National Park, Bozeman, Montana,

00:06:19.680 | anywhere around the national park, people really want to get

00:06:22.040 | out in the great outdoors.

00:06:23.400 | I think that COVID has sort of shifted demand patterns a little bit less.

00:06:28.320 | More people want to travel domestically.

00:06:30.000 | And we're seeing super tight availability around the national parks.

00:06:35.680 | And because I couldn't find a rental car around Glacier airport, I ended

00:06:39.880 | up flying up to Calgary and then ended up morphing it into a trip to Banff and

00:06:43.880 | Glacier, just because rental cars were better availability and better pricing

00:06:47.600 | up in Canada than they were here in the US.

00:06:50.000 | But even up in Calgary now, it's impossible to find a rental car.

00:06:53.400 | I just got lucky when I was looking.

00:06:55.000 | So you just said something that's interesting.

00:07:21.720 | Rental cars historically have been what I like to say, the redheaded

00:07:34.360 | Well, you really need to turn that process on its head.

00:07:42.720 | Last year, we had a lot of people who were telling us that they

00:07:46.800 | And then they realized that they couldn't get a rental car, especially in areas

00:07:50.040 | like Florida and Phoenix and Las Vegas.

00:07:52.000 | And they basically canceled the trip because they didn't want to be landlocked.

00:07:54.800 | They didn't want to be stuck at a resort or not able to get around.

00:07:57.760 | Thankfully there was flight flexibility in terms of cancellations and rebooking.

00:08:01.600 | So they decided to just move their trip later in the season because they

00:08:05.640 | couldn't get a car at the time that they originally wanted to go.

00:08:08.160 | So people are starting to realize that the old rules don't apply anymore.

00:08:32.640 | So I'm just thinking, gosh, I don't usually fly here, but if I did, it would

00:08:36.080 | at least be worth checking all three airports because you might pay $50 more

00:09:34.600 | And it's interesting, one thing that changed with COVID and I'm not quite

00:09:37.640 | sure why this is 8 AM to 6 PM was normal operating hours, but a lot of

00:09:41.480 | locations were seeing 8 AM to 5 PM.

00:09:43.400 | In fact, San Francisco, the city of San Francisco, there are no off

00:09:46.680 | airport rental car locations that are open past 5 PM.

00:09:49.400 | And that was not the case pre COVID.

00:09:51.760 | So for whatever reason, they just decided to scale back their operating

00:09:55.920 | hours and we're seeing that in a number of different cities.

00:09:58.360 | So I want to walk through a bit of the process of all the things.

00:10:06.240 | So I'll start with when you're just searching, I want to understand what

00:10:09.840 | is it about rental cars and maybe the way the backend inventory

00:10:14.520 | I know sometimes I'm looking for a car, I go to a rental car website.

00:10:18.080 | And if you want to search off airport, I think at enterprise, you

00:10:20.840 | have to search location by location.

00:10:22.880 | I know there's aggregators to search, but before we even get in, is there

00:10:26.440 | a reason why rental car searching is so much harder than maybe flights or hotels?

00:10:31.240 | We've had people ask us before, can I do like a flexible search and show

00:10:35.280 | me the cheapest rental car with an entire state, but it's not so easy

00:10:38.600 | because you're typically searching for anywhere up to the 25 vehicles per

00:10:43.080 | search, the date and time make a difference in terms of when you're

00:10:46.480 | picking up, when you're returning.

00:10:47.800 | There can be a huge amount of results that come back.

00:10:50.440 | So rental car searching is a fairly intensive process.

00:10:53.640 | Unlike a flight where there's a limited number of flights per day,

00:10:58.720 | You're either business class, premium economy, economy with rental cars.

00:11:02.560 | You've got 50 different vehicle types, changing the pickup time by even a few

00:11:06.720 | minutes can change the price, and then you've got sometimes hundreds of

00:11:15.360 | radius, but there isn't any way to do a true flexible date search or flexible

00:11:20.240 | location search with rental cars, just because the amount of data

00:12:14.000 | And there's so many different permutations if you think about it, because

00:12:20.440 | return off airport, you can rent on, return on, rent on, return off, you
