00:23:17.560 | more than we've seen in the previous years.
00:23:19.320 | So God has used that opportunity to stir up people
00:23:22.600 | in searching for meaning and purpose,
00:23:24.680 | and it's not just our church.
00:23:26.520 | I've been talking to other churches and other Christians

00:44:00.660 | So eventually that'll cause you to leave
00:44:03.380 | and find a church where you feel like
00:44:05.260 | you're gonna be able to learn and become like that, right?
00:44:08.420 | Or you conform and you become whatever is being taught.
00:44:12.620 | That's exactly what Jesus was saying
00:44:15.820 | because prior to this text that we're looking at,
00:44:18.300 | Jesus was teaching his disciples
00:44:21.180 | that the primary thing that God desires of his disciples
00:44:24.620 | is to practice the love that he practiced with them.
00:44:27.980 | He said our identifying mark,
00:44:30.220 | the highest identifying mark of a genuine believer
00:44:34.700 | is his love, it's the quality of his love,
00:44:38.060 | this agape love, to love people the way he loved us,
00:44:41.860 | to love people that are difficult to love,
00:44:44.220 | love people that are our enemies,
00:44:47.100 | who are persecuting us, who are out to harm us,
00:44:49.180 | to bless them, to do good to them.
00:44:51.900 | And he says the reason why it's hard for you to understand
00:44:54.940 | is because the leaders in your life were blind,
00:44:59.180 | and they were blind leading the blind,
00:45:00.940 | so that's why they ended up falling into a pit.
00:45:04.100 | And so all of the things that he's saying here
00:45:06.060 | was an indictment against these Pharisees,
00:45:09.660 | that they were under poor leadership.
00:45:12.200 | In fact, we talked about that last week,
00:45:13.900 | how much the Bible has to say about leadership in Israel,
00:45:18.660 | and how much it has to say about leadership
00:45:20.740 | in the church in general,
00:45:22.660 | that if you don't take leadership seriously,
00:45:25.860 | it's just a matter of time that the church
00:45:28.340 | or the organization will go down as the leader goes down.
00:45:31.700 | As much as the Bible says about the Pharisees,
00:45:36.820 | and as much rebuke is given to the Pharisees,
00:45:40.180 | you know, we talked about last week
00:45:41.280 | how repeatedly, over and over again,
00:45:43.180 | you Pharisees, you hypocrites, you hypocrites,
00:45:45.940 | you hypocrites, you actors,
00:45:48.860 | you're living up to the role,
00:45:50.580 | the title that you've been given,
00:45:51.900 | but you're not actually leading
00:45:53.060 | because you yourself are blind.
00:45:55.480 | But before we're too harsh on them,
00:45:59.540 | we have to understand that the Pharisees,
00:46:01.340 | when they first started, they didn't start by saying,
00:46:03.700 | you know, let's organize and become good hypocrites.
00:46:06.820 | That's not how they started.
00:46:07.900 | They started out thinking that they're not gonna be
00:46:11.300 | like the other Jews who kind of compromise
00:46:13.900 | and become Hellenized and become more and more worldly.
00:46:17.180 | They knew that God's judgment
00:46:19.140 | came upon the nation of Israel
00:46:20.300 | because they didn't take the warning from God seriously.
00:46:22.860 | So the Pharisees got together,
00:46:24.780 | and the name itself means to be set apart.
00:46:26.980 | They wanted to be holy.
00:46:28.360 | They wanted to be disciplined.
00:46:30.960 | They wanted to take the law seriously.
00:46:32.500 | They wanted the Lord's blessing.
00:46:34.100 | But as time went by, their desire to be holy
00:46:39.140 | eventually turned into self-righteousness.
00:46:41.620 | And Jesus explains here the reason why they were blind,
00:46:46.420 | primarily, is because they were focused
00:46:49.080 | on other people's unrighteousness instead of their own.
00:46:52.440 | Next week, we're gonna be talking about
00:46:54.860 | the second part of that,
00:46:56.760 | is because their very nature was not changed.
00:47:00.340 | And all they did was have a checkoff list
00:47:03.540 | that they were good at,
00:47:04.460 | and then whoever didn't do what they were doing,
00:47:07.360 | they needed to fix.
00:47:08.860 | The text that we're looking at in Luke chapter 6, 41 and 42,
00:47:14.080 | basically, Jesus is indicting the leaders of Israel.
00:47:18.320 | The reason why they are blind
00:47:20.360 | is because they were blind to their own problems.
00:47:24.780 | Verse 41, "Why do you look at the speck
00:47:27.200 | "that is in your brother's eye,
00:47:28.460 | "but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"
00:47:31.220 | In other words, you're so concerned
00:47:33.640 | about this little toothpick that you're trying to pick
00:47:35.960 | and say, "You know, you got this in your eye,
00:47:37.520 | "you got this in your eye,
00:47:39.180 | "but you got a log in your eye."
00:47:40.860 | Obviously, it's in hyperbole describing
00:47:43.980 | how blind they are in verse 42.
00:47:45.620 | Or, "How can you say to your brothers,
00:47:47.660 | "brothers, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,
00:47:50.280 | "when you yourself do not see the log
00:47:52.460 | "that is in your own eye?"
00:47:54.620 | You notice he's saying, "You're blind."
00:47:57.580 | The previous verse, he said,
00:47:58.980 | "You have leaders who are blind who are leading you,
00:48:02.100 | "who are leading other people who are blind,
00:48:03.900 | "that's leading you into a pit."
00:48:05.380 | And so he describes here why they are blind.
00:48:08.700 | They are blind because they do not see their own sins.
00:48:13.060 | They're so concerned about sins of other people
00:48:16.500 | that they became blind themselves.
00:48:18.420 | When you yourself do not see the log
00:48:20.060 | that is in your own eye, you hypocrite.
00:48:22.120 | First, take the log out of your own eye,
00:48:24.980 | then you will see clearly to take out the speck
00:48:27.500 | that is in your brother's eye.
00:48:29.460 | Every single one of us are much better
00:48:34.740 | at pointing out other people's sin than our own sins.
00:48:37.380 | Most of you probably don't know what your car smells like.
00:48:42.400 | Once you bought the car and that new car smell disappears,
00:48:48.260 | and then after about four or five years,
00:48:49.760 | and you're the primary driver of that car,
00:48:51.860 | your car begins to take on your smell.
00:48:57.140 | And you don't know it because you've become
00:48:59.040 | so accustomed to this smell
00:49:00.780 | until somebody new comes into your car
00:49:03.020 | and they say, "What is this?"
00:49:04.940 | And you say, "What smell?
00:49:07.780 | "What are you talking about?"
00:49:08.600 | Because you've become so accustomed to that smell.
00:49:10.980 | At our house, we have two cats that I adore.
00:49:14.840 | If you don't know what sarcasm is, that was sarcasm.
00:49:19.700 | Every once in a while, somebody will come into our house
00:49:23.420 | and they say, "Your house smells like cats."
00:49:27.660 | I don't smell it 'cause I'm in it.
00:49:30.280 | I've been in it for a long time, so I don't smell it.
00:49:33.820 | But when people come into our house,
00:49:36.020 | they'll say it started to take on the smell of the cats,
00:49:39.020 | which I'm very happy about.
00:49:40.680 | Again, it's sarcasm.
00:49:44.000 | I don't recognize it because I'm in it.
00:49:47.700 | I'm a part of it, so I've become so accustomed to it
00:49:50.500 | that I don't recognize it.
00:49:52.500 | And it is in the same way with our own sins.
00:49:55.680 | We become so accustomed to it
00:49:59.700 | that we don't realize how it looks to other people.
00:50:04.240 | So other people see our sins and they wanna take that out,
00:50:08.880 | but we're so good at seeing other people's sins
00:50:12.620 | that we think that if we just fix that,
00:50:14.740 | everything would be so good.
00:50:16.380 | You say, "A more godly spin to this?"
00:50:22.120 | Is that, "No, I need to speak the truth in love
00:50:25.700 | "because I'm doing God's work.
00:50:26.920 | "How do we ever disciple anybody
00:50:28.280 | "if I don't point out other people's love?"
00:50:30.480 | We're cowards.
00:50:32.120 | We're afraid to point it out,
00:50:33.540 | so we take on a godly spin to focusing on other people's sins
00:50:38.540 | for the kingdom of God, right?
00:50:41.840 | 'Cause other people are not willing to do it,
00:50:43.280 | so I'm gonna go out and point out, "This is sin.
00:50:45.260 | "This is sin."
00:50:46.720 | I remember back in college, I was a part of a ministry,
00:50:49.280 | and it was a charismatic ministry,
00:50:50.960 | and part of the charismatic thing that they was doing
00:50:52.920 | was that God told me that you had three sins.
00:50:55.980 | And the leaders would walk around and say,
00:50:57.860 | "I have this vision.
00:50:58.700 | "You have three sins."
00:51:00.400 | And I remember the people who are under that
00:51:02.080 | would walk around saying, "I know two of 'em.
00:51:04.120 | "I don't know what the third one is," right?
00:51:06.520 | And they were constantly focusing on,
00:51:07.840 | "What is the other sin I need to do?"
00:51:10.520 | Now, that's a charismatic spin to that,
00:51:12.760 | but naturally, we have a tendency to think
00:51:18.280 | if they change, everything would be better.
00:51:22.080 | See, that was the problem with the Pharisees.
00:51:23.740 | Pharisees were constantly focused on other people's sins.
00:51:28.200 | In Psalm 139, 23-24, it says,
00:51:30.180 | "Search me, O God, and know my heart.
00:51:33.780 | "Try me and know my anxious thoughts,
00:51:36.340 | "and see if there be any hurtful way in me,
00:51:38.560 | "and lead me in the everlasting way."
00:51:41.080 | See, an individual who is truly growing in their faith
00:51:45.760 | is somebody who is broken over their own sins.
00:51:51.440 | The problem that we have if we're not careful
00:51:55.020 | is that we get so focused on other people's sins,
00:51:58.520 | one, it blinds us, and then it exaggerates their sins,
00:52:02.980 | and so we have a tendency,
00:52:04.580 | we're living in constant frustration
00:52:05.980 | that they're not doing what they're supposed to be doing.
00:52:08.820 | And so it leads to frustration, not only to you,
00:52:12.820 | but it leads to frustration with everybody else.
00:52:15.660 | In 1 Timothy 4, 16, as Paul is training this young pastor
00:52:21.340 | to take over as the pastor of the Church of Ephesus,
00:52:24.780 | he's training this young pastor up, and he says,
00:52:27.080 | "Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching.
00:52:31.480 | "Persevere in these things, for as you do this,
00:52:33.680 | "you will ensure salvation both for yourselves
00:52:36.220 | "and for those who hear you."
00:52:39.080 | You notice here, he says, "In order to save them,
00:52:42.680 | "in order to save yourself, to do what?
00:52:45.660 | "Examine them carefully to make sure
00:52:47.680 | "what they're doing wrong.
00:52:50.340 | "Make sure you assess them properly
00:52:52.140 | "to make sure you can tell them what they're doing wrong
00:52:55.040 | "so that they can be discipled and be better,
00:52:57.160 | "they can do things better."
00:52:58.120 | He says, "No."
00:52:59.140 | He says, "In order for their salvation
00:53:01.720 | "and for your salvation," he says, "Watch yourself.
00:53:05.200 | "Watch yourself, your life, and your doctrines carefully."
00:53:11.200 | What happens to a community where people are trained
00:53:15.600 | to constantly examine other people?
00:53:18.600 | And that's their primary focus.
00:53:20.340 | What ends up happening?
00:53:21.500 | You have a community of people who are constantly concerned
00:53:25.780 | about what other people think.
00:53:27.680 | See, that's what happened with the Pharisees.
00:53:30.520 | Pharisees, because they're hypocrites,
00:53:32.100 | they presented themselves as godly,
00:53:34.060 | even though they were ungodly behind the scenes,
00:53:36.680 | created an environment where they were under bondage.
00:53:41.060 | They were constantly under bondage
00:53:43.860 | because they knew that they were gonna be judged
00:53:45.460 | for whatever they did, whatever they said,
00:53:48.340 | whatever they did, wherever they lived,
00:53:50.700 | whatever they didn't do,
00:53:52.220 | they knew they were gonna be called out.
00:53:54.220 | He says, "The reason why they were blind
00:53:57.780 | "is because they were so focused on themselves,
00:54:01.720 | "on other people's sins."
00:54:03.520 | You know, it's interesting that when it comes to wealth,
00:54:07.580 | we have a tendency to compare it
00:54:08.940 | with people who have more than us, right?
00:54:11.460 | Americans, you know, we're all wealthy,
00:54:14.700 | but then we always find somebody who's wealthier than us.
00:54:18.100 | Right?
00:54:18.940 | If you're making 100,000,
00:54:20.020 | you know somebody who's making 200,000.
00:54:21.700 | If you live in a nice house, three-bedroom house,
00:54:23.620 | you know somebody who has a four-bedroom house.
00:54:25.780 | You drive a nice car, somebody has a better car than you.
00:54:28.700 | You have Tesla 3, somebody has Tesla S, right?
00:54:32.780 | So whenever we come to, come about wealth,
00:54:36.600 | we have a tendency to justify our pursuit of money
00:54:41.600 | because we're not rich,
00:54:44.380 | 'cause we have a tendency to always compare
00:54:46.260 | to the people who are better than us.
00:54:48.940 | But when it comes to our righteousness,
00:54:50.600 | for some reason, we do exactly the opposite.
00:54:52.860 | We look at people who are worse than us.
00:54:55.820 | We're failing.
00:54:56.740 | We're not doing what we're doing.
00:54:58.420 | At least we're not as bad as them.
00:55:00.860 | So we justify.
00:55:03.980 | We justify pursuit of riches by saying,
00:55:06.860 | "We're not really rich like them,"
00:55:08.340 | and we justify our sins by always comparing
00:55:10.980 | with people who are worse than us.
00:55:12.940 | That's exactly what the Pharisees did.
00:55:15.420 | Luke 18, 11 through 13, the Pharisee stood
00:55:17.460 | and was praying this to himself.
00:55:19.340 | "God, I thank you that I am not like other people,
00:55:21.880 | "swindlers, unjust adulterers,
00:55:23.560 | "or even like this tax collector.
00:55:25.580 | "I fast twice a week.
00:55:27.020 | "I pay tithes of all that I get."
00:55:29.700 | You notice here he's chosen swindlers, unjust adulterers,
00:55:34.100 | or even tax collectors, the worst of sinners
00:55:36.260 | that everybody acknowledges are sinners.
00:55:39.740 | And he says, "Thank God I'm not like them."
00:55:41.340 | In other words, I am righteous.
00:55:44.260 | We have a tendency to always compare our righteousness
00:55:47.140 | with other people who are more unrighteous,
00:55:49.220 | and so therefore we don't feel as bad.
00:55:51.220 | The tax collector, on the other hand, verse 13,
00:55:54.540 | the tax collector standing some distance away
00:55:56.480 | was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven,
00:55:59.240 | but was beating his breast saying,
00:56:00.800 | "God, be merciful to me, the sinner."
00:56:03.640 | And Jesus asked the questions to his disciples,
00:56:06.460 | "Who was justified?"
00:56:07.860 | Says the tax collector.
00:56:09.980 | Because he recognized his sin.
00:56:13.860 | He recognized his need for a savior,
00:56:16.580 | and he's the one who asked for forgiveness.
00:56:18.900 | The Pharisees were blind
00:56:22.580 | because they were focused on other people's sin.
00:56:25.220 | In fact, in 2 Corinthians 10, 12, it says,
00:56:28.500 | "For we are not bold to class,
00:56:30.640 | "to class or compare ourselves
00:56:32.840 | "with some of those who commend themselves."
00:56:36.220 | In other words, they look at themselves like,
00:56:37.380 | "Thank God I'm not like those people.
00:56:39.680 | "And because I'm not like them,
00:56:42.300 | "those other people need to get fixed."
00:56:44.580 | But when they measure themselves,
00:56:46.900 | by themselves, compare themselves with themselves,
00:56:50.060 | they are without understanding.
00:56:53.340 | What's another way of saying they are without understanding?
00:56:57.500 | They're blind.
00:56:59.100 | They're blind.
00:57:00.620 | Because they're so focused on other people's sins,
00:57:03.740 | other people's unrighteousness,
00:57:05.420 | that they have become blind,
00:57:06.820 | so they do not see themselves,
00:57:08.780 | nor do they see others with correct vision.
00:57:12.940 | Because they're so focused on other people.
00:57:15.140 | Matthew 23, 23 says,
00:57:18.160 | "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites,
00:57:20.580 | "for you tithe mint and dill and cumin,
00:57:23.860 | "and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law,
00:57:26.540 | "justice and mercy and faithfulness.
00:57:29.420 | "But these are the things you should have done
00:57:31.160 | "without neglecting the others."
00:57:33.800 | When we focus our righteousness,
00:57:38.300 | and say, "At least I'm not as bad as them."
00:57:41.380 | The Pharisees were walking around saying,
00:57:42.860 | "You know, I keep the law, I keep the Sabbath,
00:57:44.700 | "I tithe, I pray, I evangelize.
00:57:46.940 | "I do all of these things,
00:57:49.020 | "and those sinners are not doing
00:57:50.660 | "what they're supposed to do."
00:57:52.260 | But he says, "The weightier things of justice,
00:57:56.220 | "mercy, and faithfulness,
00:57:58.260 | "which in God's eyes are more important
00:58:01.640 | "than what they were doing."
00:58:03.340 | So you completely justify that.
00:58:05.380 | You don't care about the people who are hurting.
00:58:08.820 | You don't care people about suffering.
00:58:11.140 | All you care is that they live up to the standard
00:58:14.260 | that you've created.
00:58:15.420 | And as a result of that, what do they say?
00:58:17.940 | They became blind.
00:58:19.380 | So everything coming out of their mouth was blind.
00:58:24.220 | They're not seeing things clearly.
00:58:26.820 | So if you're not seeing things clearly,
00:58:28.880 | everything coming out of their mouth
00:58:30.460 | is coming through a filter of what?
00:58:32.420 | Of self-righteousness.
00:58:34.060 | That's why self-righteousness causes you to be blind.
00:58:40.440 | So everything that you say, everything that you assess
00:58:43.700 | is coming through a blind filter.
00:58:47.300 | So if you're wearing a yellow sunglass,
00:58:51.120 | everybody is gonna look Asian.
00:58:52.980 | Everybody's gonna look Asian
00:58:58.500 | because of the sunglass that you have on.
00:59:01.420 | And you don't realize that you have that sunglass.
00:59:03.300 | You think everybody else is wearing sunglass but you.
00:59:07.340 | And because of that, you are blind leading the blind.
00:59:10.560 | You know what's interesting is in 1853,
00:59:13.600 | there was a society called American Track Society.
00:59:16.400 | And they determined that they needed to eradicate
00:59:21.040 | worldliness in the church.
00:59:23.200 | So they went on a campaign to eradicate
00:59:26.000 | drinking and dancing.
00:59:27.340 | So they went on a campaign that we can't have a church
00:59:31.520 | that's a centrist that looks out the world,
00:59:33.360 | who's doing this and doing that.
00:59:36.300 | And they were going preaching, they wanted to bring revival.
00:59:39.300 | And then somebody pointed out to them,
00:59:42.240 | you're so concerned about the drinking and dancing,
00:59:47.080 | but you're not addressing slavery.
00:59:49.860 | And in the thick of things, he said,
00:59:53.700 | why won't you speak against slavery?
00:59:55.500 | And their response was, it's too divisive.
00:59:57.700 | It's too divisive.
01:00:00.180 | That's why we don't wanna touch that, it's too divisive.
01:00:04.860 | They were focusing on these external things
01:00:07.660 | that they feel like we're gonna bring revival,
01:00:09.500 | but the real issue of that generation, they did not touch.
01:00:13.460 | In Romans 2, 1, it says, therefore, you have no excuse,
01:00:17.060 | every one of you who pass judgment,
01:00:19.500 | for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself,
01:00:22.660 | for you who judge practice the same things.
01:00:25.880 | You're so focused on changing the world,
01:00:29.540 | and changing other people.
01:00:34.620 | But you're so blind to what other people see so clearly.
01:00:38.460 | The sin of pride, the sin of neglect,
01:00:44.860 | sin of licentiousness, you don't see it.
01:00:48.140 | It's like, what smell?
01:00:49.860 | I don't smell any smell, right?
01:00:51.740 | Something's wrong with your nose.
01:00:53.380 | I remember years ago, when I was a college pastor,
01:00:58.380 | I remember somebody came to me and they said,
01:01:00.700 | can you please pray for my parents?
01:01:04.300 | And they would go, every time they would come home,
01:01:05.940 | they would share the gospel with the parents,
01:01:07.540 | and they said every time she would share,
01:01:11.220 | the parents would kind of like,
01:01:12.820 | basically, I don't wanna hear it, I don't wanna hear it.
01:01:14.380 | And one day, she said, you know what,
01:01:15.740 | I'm just gonna confront my parents.
01:01:17.440 | She went home and started sharing the gospel,
01:01:21.380 | and was very aggressive about sharing the gospel.
01:01:24.360 | And then the mother, she came back to me so discouraged,
01:01:27.140 | and she said, what happened?
01:01:27.980 | And she said, when I try to press my parents
01:01:31.380 | about their claiming to know God,
01:01:34.700 | and say, no, you don't know God,
01:01:35.940 | you need to do this, you need to do that.
01:01:37.780 | And then the mother turned around and said,
01:01:40.740 | you want me to go to church?
01:01:42.740 | I said, you need to be a good human being first.
01:01:46.220 | And she knew exactly what her mother was saying.
01:01:49.980 | She was disobedient, she was arguing with parents,
01:01:54.780 | she wasn't doing what her parents wanted her to do,
01:01:57.180 | and she was just kind of living in rebellion,
01:01:58.900 | but then she would come home
01:01:59.780 | and try to share the gospel with her.
01:02:02.340 | And then I said, I can't hear what you're saying,
01:02:04.740 | because you're not practicing anything that you're saying.
01:02:08.120 | When you've talked to people who've left the church,
01:02:13.940 | how many of them left the church
01:02:15.900 | because they said that the pastor's wearing a suit,
01:02:19.120 | he's not hip?
01:02:20.040 | Or, oh, the songs in the church are so fuddy-duddy
01:02:25.980 | from the 1970s, I just couldn't sing anymore,
01:02:28.500 | so I walked away from the church?
01:02:30.140 | Or the way it was organized, or it's just too,
01:02:34.820 | how many of you, maybe some of you have that,
01:02:37.260 | but most people who,
01:02:39.320 | I'm not talking about people who moved churches,
01:02:40.820 | I'm talking about people who fell away from the church,
01:02:42.340 | how many people that have you talked to
01:02:44.500 | who try to share the gospel with them,
01:02:45.620 | and he says, I don't want to go to church,
01:02:46.620 | because the church is what, filled with what?
01:02:48.820 | Right, you already know, hypocrites.
01:02:52.400 | Hypocrites.
01:02:55.700 | Because we have a tendency to be so focused
01:02:58.260 | on what the world is doing,
01:03:00.620 | and not focused enough on what we're doing.
01:03:04.380 | And that's a church version of it,
01:03:05.940 | but in an individual version,
01:03:08.500 | we have a tendency to focus all our attention
01:03:10.500 | on what other people need to fix.
01:03:13.620 | And we become blind to ourselves.
01:03:20.780 | When you do Bible study, right,
01:03:24.960 | what inspires you to do Bible study?
01:03:29.500 | Now, I can be up here, tell you why it's so important,
01:03:32.540 | and the leaders of the church can expound upon the passages,
01:03:36.140 | and the things that we've learned,
01:03:37.360 | and show you our insight,
01:03:39.740 | and there's, that's also important in the church,
01:03:43.700 | but just from even my own personal experience,
01:03:46.020 | what inspires you to grow in your faith,
01:03:49.980 | to take the word of God more seriously,
01:03:51.520 | is you have somebody in your Bible study who is so hungry.
01:03:54.380 | They are not the most, they're not the experts,
01:03:57.900 | they're not the best in everything,
01:04:00.220 | and they just, maybe they just became Christian,
01:04:02.300 | but they're hungry.
01:04:04.400 | They're coming in with questions.
01:04:06.840 | What am I supposed to do?
01:04:07.900 | What does this mean to me?
01:04:09.020 | Man, this is so exciting.
01:04:11.620 | And their hunger to learn, and to grow, is infectious.
01:04:16.620 | And then you have somebody in the group,
01:04:19.340 | it's like, yeah, you know, I read this book,
01:04:21.060 | and I read that book, and I know this,
01:04:22.340 | I can argue with this, and I can take you on with this,
01:04:24.540 | and I can do that.
01:04:25.740 | Who's inspired?
01:04:27.100 | All it does is like, at best, like, oh, you know a lot.
01:04:33.020 | The end.
01:04:33.980 | But you're not inspired, in fact, you get irritated.
01:04:37.580 | Whenever somebody begins to show off about their knowledge,
01:04:40.220 | about what they know, about the Greek syntax,
01:04:42.340 | and you start going off on that,
01:04:45.540 | and it's like, nobody comes out of that Bible saying,
01:04:47.860 | oh, I wanna study the Bible.
01:04:50.180 | What inspires people are other people
01:04:54.760 | who are just humbly wanting to learn and to grow.
01:04:59.420 | And that inspires other people to want to grow and to learn.
01:05:04.120 | It is our constant focus on, we need to change the world.
01:05:10.620 | We need to change the church, we need to change the people.
01:05:16.100 | And all you produce are other people
01:05:18.980 | who are doing the same thing.
01:05:20.420 | Now, if we ended our sermon here,
01:05:24.340 | and we said, okay, we should never judge.
01:05:26.180 | Never, how dare you.
01:05:28.700 | The Bible says, do not judge, don't ever judge.
01:05:30.940 | Ever, ever judge.
01:05:32.420 | Is that what he says here?
01:05:34.660 | No, what he says here is,
01:05:37.820 | take the log out of your own eye first, right?
01:05:42.820 | First, so that you can see clearly,
01:05:46.740 | to be able to make righteous judgment.
01:05:50.460 | In fact, in Luke 6.42, it says,
01:05:55.300 | 1 Corinthians 6.3, it says,
01:05:56.540 | do you not know that we will judge angels?
01:05:59.300 | How much more matters of this life?
01:06:01.740 | We are called to judge.
01:06:04.340 | Our eternity is going to be that we're gonna be
01:06:06.780 | sitting in the seats of judgment.
01:06:09.040 | So if we're gonna do that,
01:06:10.100 | you need to be able to do that well here.
01:06:13.020 | But there's a difference between judging
01:06:14.840 | and being judgmental.
01:06:16.820 | Judgmental is somebody who is unaware of their own sins
01:06:20.700 | and focus all their attention
01:06:22.300 | on what other people need to do.
01:06:24.120 | And all it creates is greater stink.
01:06:28.360 | 'Cause nobody's challenged by that,
01:06:31.340 | nobody wants that, nobody wants to be around that.
01:06:34.260 | But he says, take your log out of your own eye.
01:06:40.460 | Make the focus of sanctification you.
01:06:42.620 | And when you are sanctified, when you are growing,
01:06:46.020 | you'll see how much it inspires other people to do the same
01:06:50.320 | without you saying a single thing.
01:06:52.560 | If you wanna inspire people to pray, pray.
01:06:57.900 | Pray hard.
01:06:58.900 | And when other people see you doing that,
01:07:02.500 | they will be inspired to do the same.
01:07:04.340 | In 1 Corinthians 5.12, for what have I to do
01:07:08.260 | with judging outsiders?
01:07:09.420 | Do you not judge those who are within the church?
01:07:12.460 | What are we to do?
01:07:15.260 | Why are we so concerned
01:07:16.540 | about what the secular non-Christians are doing
01:07:18.660 | outside the church and not concerned enough
01:07:21.660 | about the church, about ourselves?
01:07:25.980 | The reason why the church needs to be
01:07:30.620 | what God called us to be is because the primary way
01:07:33.580 | that we're going to shed the light in the world
01:07:36.380 | is to become a brighter light.
01:07:38.340 | Right now, the problem with our generation
01:07:41.740 | is that the light in the church is so dim
01:07:43.820 | that you try to take a dim light
01:07:47.060 | and you go into the darkness
01:07:48.260 | and they don't even recognize that the light is on
01:07:50.780 | because they can't see the difference
01:07:53.860 | between the church and the world.
01:07:56.140 | So he says, in order for the church
01:07:58.860 | to be able to see clearly, we need to learn how to judge.
01:08:02.660 | Again, not being judgmental, to judge.
01:08:05.500 | And again, how does that start?
01:08:07.540 | Is with ourselves, right?
01:08:10.020 | Focus on ourselves, on our own sanctity, on our own growth.
01:08:13.700 | John 7:24, "Do not judge according to appearance,
01:08:17.460 | "but judge with righteous judgment."
01:08:20.900 | He says to judge, but to judge righteously, right?
01:08:24.700 | Now, some of you guys may be sitting here thinking like,
01:08:26.980 | yeah, that's what I've been doing.
01:08:28.780 | This whole time I've been righteous judgment, right?
01:08:32.060 | What stink?
01:08:34.020 | You don't see any stink?
01:08:35.260 | Let me give you some practical things to look at
01:08:40.140 | to see if you are making righteous judgment, right?
01:08:45.540 | First of all, if you're not in the word of God, right?
01:08:50.820 | If you're not in the word of God
01:08:52.260 | and you don't know what the word of God says,
01:08:55.220 | don't be overly confident about your opinion
01:08:57.660 | 'cause it's your opinion.
01:09:00.860 | And all you're saying is,
01:09:02.380 | my opinion is better than your opinion.
01:09:03.940 | It's just opinion.
01:09:05.780 | It doesn't matter, it's your opinion.
01:09:07.780 | The church is not my church, it's not your church.
01:09:10.580 | We don't base what's right or wrong
01:09:12.380 | based upon how I feel or how you feel.
01:09:14.420 | It's based upon God's word.
01:09:16.780 | So even if I don't like it,
01:09:18.700 | if the word of God says something, we obey.
01:09:21.340 | I obey and you obey.
01:09:23.740 | I remember years ago, we were doing a Bible study
01:09:26.660 | on Timothy and we talked about women leadership
01:09:29.260 | and we said we don't practice women eldership in our church
01:09:32.020 | and she got so mad.
01:09:33.020 | She was a graduate of Smith College,
01:09:35.140 | was known to be hyper-feminist
01:09:38.940 | and I remember that Bible study,
01:09:40.500 | she came at me like she was gonna body slam me.
01:09:44.100 | She said, "How can you pervert the word of God like that?"
01:09:49.020 | I said, "What are you talking about?
01:09:50.260 | "We just shared the word."
01:09:51.460 | It's like, "That's not what the word of God said.
01:09:52.740 | "You're picking and choosing what you want to
01:09:54.940 | "and you're perverting that.
01:09:55.860 | "That's not what the word of God says."
01:09:58.500 | I said, "Okay, let's actually examine the Bible together."
01:10:03.100 | If you ask me for a passage,
01:10:06.740 | obviously you're not gonna trust me.
01:10:07.740 | So what I want you to do is I'm gonna give you some time
01:10:10.540 | to go look at the word of God
01:10:12.820 | and ask people that you respect,
01:10:14.900 | who you think know the Bible well.
01:10:16.600 | Ask them for the texts that talk about this issue
01:10:21.020 | and then I want you to go study it for yourself.
01:10:23.660 | So I gave her some time, "Yeah, I'll do that."
01:10:25.340 | So she went and then she never got back to me.
01:10:27.980 | It took maybe like six weeks, seven weeks
01:10:30.260 | and she never got back to me.
01:10:31.240 | So I went and asked her, "So what happened?
01:10:33.260 | "Did you do that?"
01:10:34.740 | To her credit, she did her homework.
01:10:36.860 | She went and looked at all the texts and she said,
01:10:40.540 | "Well, I guess that's what it says."
01:10:44.280 | That's what she said.
01:10:45.900 | Okay, so let me make this clear.
01:10:48.380 | You said I was perverting the text, right?
01:10:51.380 | So now you've looked at it unbiasedly
01:10:56.420 | and you admit that this is what the text says.
01:10:59.980 | She said, "Yeah, but I don't like it."
01:11:02.560 | Okay, so let's separate, right?
01:11:05.380 | Let's separate what the Bible says and you don't like it.
01:11:08.740 | So one, you say, "Well, that's what the word of God says."
01:11:13.100 | So let's look at the second part, you don't like it.
01:11:14.780 | So what don't you like?
01:11:16.100 | You don't like what I'm saying
01:11:18.340 | 'cause all I'm doing is quoting scripture.
01:11:20.500 | What you don't like is what God said
01:11:23.500 | 'cause you just admitted that God said it, right?
01:11:26.700 | She's like, "Yeah, but I still don't like it."
01:11:31.580 | So I challenged her.
01:11:35.780 | So now we're, at least we can talk honestly.
01:11:39.200 | So now the question is, should the word of God change
01:11:41.380 | or should you change?
01:11:42.520 | Should the word of God change or should you change?
01:11:46.620 | If your perspective of what was right and wrong
01:11:49.460 | contradicted the scripture, should you change
01:11:53.180 | or should the Bible change?
01:11:54.620 | To her credit, she gave in.
01:11:57.700 | To her credit, she gave in.
01:12:00.020 | She said, "That's what the word of God said."
01:12:01.980 | And it took her a while for her to accept that.
01:12:04.940 | And I give you an example of that.
01:12:06.440 | How much of people's protest in what I say
01:12:11.440 | or what the church does and what we believe
01:12:14.380 | is coming from their own bias?
01:12:16.460 | What they've learned, what they think is right,
01:12:19.640 | what seems fair, what doesn't seem fair,
01:12:21.820 | but it's not based on scripture.
01:12:23.060 | So first and foremost, if you do not know the word of God,
01:12:26.260 | where you need to focus your primary attention
01:12:29.780 | is to know the word of God so that what you say
01:12:33.780 | and how you judge things are not based upon
01:12:36.020 | your personal bias, but the word of God.
01:12:38.100 | But secondly, first of all, right?
01:12:42.720 | So you need to know the word of God.
01:12:45.580 | But secondly, you need to obey the word of God.
01:12:50.860 | The word of God, not only do you know it cognitively,
01:12:54.300 | but the word of God needs to be judging you.
01:12:56.500 | Hebrew chapter 4.12, "For the word of God
01:12:59.260 | "is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword
01:13:01.860 | "and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit
01:13:04.820 | "of both joints and marrow and able to judge
01:13:07.520 | "the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
01:13:10.460 | You notice here the word of God, first and foremost,
01:13:13.940 | is to judge your thoughts and your intentions, right?
01:13:17.480 | A Pharisee is only focused on what they are doing,
01:13:21.160 | what can be measured, I did it, I memorized scripture,
01:13:24.120 | I studied scripture, I evangelized, I do this, I do that,
01:13:27.480 | so they check it off, but what does he say?
01:13:30.080 | It judges what?
01:13:31.420 | Your thoughts and your intentions of your heart.
01:13:35.620 | We can't measure that.
01:13:38.840 | We don't know that.
01:13:40.180 | No one can look at you and say,
01:13:42.040 | "Your thoughts and intentions are off."
01:13:46.120 | But you know that, the Holy Spirit knows that.
01:13:49.240 | So the word of God is open to let it judge me.
01:13:52.440 | Not how can I use this to judge other people,
01:13:56.960 | but the word of God is open to judge me.
01:13:59.380 | I started as a pastor when I shouldn't have, right?
01:14:04.520 | At 19, the guy who was discipling me said,
01:14:07.440 | "His friend is planting a church,
01:14:09.020 | "they need a youth pastor, why don't you go and teach?"
01:14:12.100 | And at that time, they only had four kids,
01:14:14.280 | so the worst I can do is to ruin four kids, right?
01:14:18.560 | So at that, we're safe.
01:14:19.720 | But because I started teaching so early,
01:14:23.920 | I was constantly preparing sermons,
01:14:26.680 | and there was a period when I was like 20, 21 years old,
01:14:29.040 | I was giving about three or four sermons a week,
01:14:30.720 | so everything that I was learning
01:14:32.320 | had to turn into a sermon.
01:14:34.480 | But I remember a friend of mine doing Bible study
01:14:36.360 | gave me a Bible, and I was wrestling with this so much
01:14:39.320 | that at the cover of the Bible, I wrote for myself,
01:14:43.080 | "Read this for yourself."
01:14:45.160 | "Read this for yourself,"
01:14:47.360 | because I was constantly reading it for other people.
01:14:50.760 | So I have that in my study, even to this day,
01:14:53.520 | every once in a while, I'll open it up,
01:14:55.600 | and it's all tethered, it's all broken up,
01:14:58.100 | so I can't use it anymore,
01:14:59.200 | but at the very front of that, every time I open it up,
01:15:02.000 | in my handwriting, I said, "Read this to yourself."
01:15:05.920 | Because the danger of being a leader
01:15:10.080 | is you put on a teacher's cap,
01:15:13.320 | and so you always see things through that lens.
01:15:17.800 | What do they need?
01:15:19.120 | And so if you're not ready, you get ruined,
01:15:23.560 | because you're no longer a student.
01:15:26.240 | You no longer ask questions, you have the answer.
01:15:28.920 | So if you, in a room full of pastors, right,
01:15:32.760 | you have 20 pastors, and somebody asks a question,
01:15:35.760 | "What does this text mean?"
01:15:36.800 | You will get 20 answers,
01:15:39.440 | 'cause everybody's used to just giving answers,
01:15:42.200 | and that's the hard part of being a leader,
01:15:44.520 | 'cause we're supposed to give answers,
01:15:45.640 | so we have an answer for everything.
01:15:46.800 | Even if we don't know, we have to give you an answer,
01:15:49.680 | and it ruins you.
01:15:51.260 | That's why becoming a leader, when you're not ready,
01:15:54.300 | doesn't help you.
01:15:55.440 | It ruins your growth, because you're constantly
01:15:59.680 | reading things for other people.
01:16:01.440 | How can I teach?
01:16:02.280 | What do they need to know?
01:16:03.660 | And we're not in the word of God
01:16:06.000 | to let it judge the thoughts and intentions of our heart.
01:16:09.440 | What is my motive?
01:16:10.280 | Am I filled with pride?
01:16:11.660 | Does this make me proud?
01:16:14.920 | Am I using it to judge other people?
01:16:16.720 | And that's why I said, don't let a new convert
01:16:19.600 | become a leader, because he will fall
01:16:21.640 | under the same judgment as the devil,
01:16:23.640 | which is wanting glory, wanting his own glory,
01:16:26.520 | and then he was ruined as a result of that.
01:16:29.520 | So the word of God, you need to know the word of God,
01:16:31.480 | you need to have the word of God
01:16:32.760 | constantly judge the thoughts and intentions of your heart.
01:16:35.480 | You need to obey the word of God, James 1, 23 to 25,
01:16:38.280 | for if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,
01:16:40.800 | he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror.
01:16:43.640 | For once he has looked at himself and gone away,
01:16:45.800 | he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was,
01:16:48.440 | for one who looks intently at the perfect law,
01:16:50.360 | the law of liberty, and abides by it,
01:16:52.680 | not having become a forgetful hearer,
01:16:54.720 | but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed
01:16:57.480 | in what he does.
01:16:59.000 | If you know
01:17:01.880 | that you have compromise in your life,
01:17:07.440 | be quiet.
01:17:08.840 | If you don't have a good grasp of the word of God,
01:17:12.920 | be quiet.
01:17:14.440 | You shouldn't be a teacher, you should be a learner.
01:17:17.240 | If you're compromised,
01:17:18.960 | don't teach.
01:17:23.360 | You should ask.
01:17:26.200 | You should be asking, "Lord, search me and know me.
01:17:29.800 | "Lord, I'm a sinner that needs your forgiveness."
01:17:34.560 | That's where we should be.
01:17:36.920 | Man, we've had people in our church
01:17:39.760 | literally struggling
01:17:42.840 | with adultery.
01:17:45.680 | And I say, "Yeah, yeah, you know, that's really bad.
01:17:48.800 | "I shouldn't be doing that."
01:17:49.800 | But what's our view on cessationism?
01:17:53.160 | What's our view about Calvinism?
01:17:57.160 | And they're concerned that maybe the proper theology,
01:18:01.920 | and they want to be a Christian,
01:18:03.160 | but the proper theology,
01:18:04.560 | and they want to debate about proper theology.
01:18:06.080 | Dude,
01:18:06.920 | you're living in sin,
01:18:10.520 | in compromise.
01:18:11.760 | I don't want to have this conversation with you
01:18:14.360 | because right now that's not your priority.
01:18:16.520 | Until you are repentant of your sins,
01:18:22.560 | you shouldn't be concerned about what other people are doing.
01:18:25.240 | 100% of your energy should be on
01:18:28.440 | asking the Lord for forgiveness and being restored.
01:18:33.960 | These Pharisees were walking around with all kinds of sins
01:18:37.600 | and worried about other people's sins
01:18:40.280 | and sweeping their own sins under the rug.
01:18:42.600 | We have too many people who are eager to teach
01:18:48.040 | and not enough people who are eager to learn.
01:18:50.280 | That's most of the problem with the Pharisees.
01:18:53.520 | Let me say a third and final thing.
01:18:55.240 | If you're not praying,
01:18:59.040 | be quiet.
01:19:01.720 | Does that sound harsh to you?
01:19:03.120 | In fact, there's a better word for be quiet
01:19:07.160 | that I'm choosing not to use
01:19:08.760 | because they're filming me right now.
01:19:10.600 | Not praying is no different than if I came up here
01:19:20.800 | and said, "You know what?
01:19:21.640 | "I was so busy, I didn't get to pray."
01:19:24.480 | It's no different than saying, "You know what?
01:19:25.800 | "I just didn't have time to open up the Bible.
01:19:27.480 | "I just didn't have time to read the Bible."
01:19:29.240 | It's no different than saying, "You know what?
01:19:30.080 | "I just didn't have time to open up the Bible this week,
01:19:31.880 | "so let's see what the Holy Spirit has to say."
01:19:34.640 | Let's see.
01:19:36.280 | Right?
01:19:38.240 | How many of you are gonna take me serious
01:19:40.840 | if I approach the Word of God that way?
01:19:42.800 | That guy's just, he's gonna just wing it.
01:19:47.560 | He's not speaking the Word of God.
01:19:49.800 | And yet, in the Western church,
01:19:51.840 | especially in Bible-preaching churches,
01:19:54.760 | speak so confidently with authority
01:19:58.920 | and are readily admit, willing to admit,
01:20:02.040 | "I don't pray."
01:20:03.880 | But they speak with such authority,
01:20:07.840 | with arrogance, that this is God's will,
01:20:13.200 | this is God's purpose.
01:20:14.800 | 2 Corinthians 2, 10 through 11,
01:20:16.400 | "For to us God revealed them through the Spirit.
01:20:18.600 | "For the Spirit searches all things,
01:20:19.800 | "and even the depths of God.
01:20:21.400 | "For who among men knows the thoughts of a man
01:20:23.400 | "except the spirit of the man who is in him?
01:20:25.880 | "Even so, the thoughts of God no one knows
01:20:27.800 | "except the Spirit of God."
01:20:30.320 | If you're not communing with the Spirit,
01:20:32.720 | you shouldn't be speaking.
01:20:36.160 | Because the Word of God are not just a statement of facts
01:20:41.320 | for you to find out.
01:20:42.960 | If you're not praying,
01:20:43.800 | you don't understand the heart of God,
01:20:45.280 | so you've perverted the Word of God
01:20:46.680 | because you're blind.
01:20:47.840 | You're not able to see clearly.
01:20:52.440 | And because you're not able to see clearly,
01:20:54.480 | your conclusions come from an altered vision.
01:20:59.480 | Because you're not aware of the thoughts and intentions
01:21:05.880 | and the arrogance of your own heart
01:21:08.560 | that causes you to see other people with perverted vision.
01:21:12.920 | Let's admit, right, let's admit,
01:21:17.400 | this is something that we need to fix.
01:21:19.520 | When we see a problem in our generation,
01:21:24.680 | especially in the conservative Bible-teaching churches,
01:21:27.400 | we get organized, we have conferences,
01:21:29.520 | we write books, we write articles,
01:21:31.440 | but we don't pray.
01:21:34.240 | We don't pray, but somehow that has become acceptable.
01:21:40.640 | Even though the Scripture says you're blind,
01:21:42.880 | you're not capable of seeing truth
01:21:46.360 | if the Spirit of God is not moving.
01:21:48.640 | If you're not humbling yourself
01:21:50.960 | and allowing the Word of God
01:21:51.960 | to judge the thoughts and intentions of your heart,
01:21:54.040 | before you go out trying to change the world
01:21:56.160 | for Jesus Christ,
01:21:57.280 | then it could be that your whole vision
01:21:59.600 | of how you look at things is wrong.
01:22:02.320 | And yet in the Western church,
01:22:06.520 | it has become perfectly acceptable
01:22:08.760 | to allow a huge portion
01:22:13.240 | of what it means to be a true follower of Christ
01:22:16.160 | and yet be so arrogant and so bold
01:22:19.840 | to claim that we know the truth.
01:22:23.640 | If we are not humble before the Lord,
01:22:26.880 | begging for Him to get involved,
01:22:30.040 | is this righteous anger that I have,
01:22:33.720 | is it righteous anger or is that self-righteousness?
01:22:38.400 | If you're not humbling yourself before the Lord in prayer,
01:22:43.040 | you would not know.
01:22:43.960 | What smell?
01:22:46.760 | I don't smell anything
01:22:47.920 | because you've gotten accustomed to compromise.
01:22:52.760 | That was the problem with the nation of Israel.
01:22:56.080 | It's not saying that we shouldn't judge,
01:22:58.840 | but we need to judge rightly.
01:23:00.880 | James 5, 19 to 20,
01:23:02.080 | "My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth
01:23:05.080 | "and one turns him back,
01:23:06.720 | "let him know that he who turns a sinner
01:23:08.800 | "from the error of his ways
01:23:09.760 | "will save his soul from death
01:23:11.320 | "and will cover a multitude of sins."
01:23:14.200 | We are to judge, but righteous judgment.
01:23:21.200 | We are to seek the truth.
01:23:22.360 | We are to speak the truth in love.
01:23:24.640 | But until we focus our attention on ourselves first,
01:23:29.920 | your whole vision of what you think is right and wrong
01:23:33.520 | will easily be perverted.
01:23:34.880 | And Satan himself will use that
01:23:36.760 | to pervert your view of righteousness,
01:23:39.520 | to pervert the church, to pervert discipleship,
01:23:42.120 | pervert evangelism, pervert prayer, pervert Bible study.
01:23:50.560 | It says in Galatians 6, 1 to 2,
01:23:52.200 | "Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass,
01:23:54.800 | "you who are spiritual,"
01:23:56.440 | spiritual is an individual who has spent his time
01:24:01.440 | focusing on his unrighteousness and asking for forgiveness.
01:24:06.360 | "He who is spiritual restores such a one
01:24:09.520 | "in a spirit of gentleness."
01:24:11.360 | Even when you see things clearly,
01:24:13.800 | he said it ought to be done with gentleness.
01:24:17.280 | "Each one looking to yourself
01:24:18.400 | "so that you too will not be tempted.
01:24:19.800 | "Bear one another burden
01:24:21.080 | "and thereby fulfill the law of Christ."
01:24:23.600 | Years ago, somebody got me free tickets, right?
01:24:29.880 | First class tickets to come from Asia
01:24:33.120 | to the United States, right?
01:24:34.560 | I was on a mission trip and I happened to be in Hong Kong
01:24:37.040 | and somebody was generous enough to say,
01:24:39.520 | "Hey, I want you to pass.
01:24:40.360 | "I want you to experience what first class feels like."
01:24:43.160 | And I got to ride first class, right?
01:24:45.800 | First time ever in my life.
01:24:48.340 | And I got in there and then there's, again,
01:24:50.400 | the first class is usually pretty empty.
01:24:53.080 | There's only three or four people in there.
01:24:55.860 | And I've ridden business class before,
01:24:57.500 | but first class was a different experience.
01:25:00.420 | And anything that I did,
01:25:02.180 | and I remember I would drop a napkin
01:25:04.140 | and they would come running to pick it up for me.
01:25:06.540 | I dropped it again just to see if they would do it.
01:25:10.500 | (congregation laughing)
01:25:12.040 | Sure enough, they came.
01:25:13.340 | They picked it up and they put it back.
01:25:16.300 | And I felt so uncomfortable,
01:25:18.700 | because I was a peasant in first class, right?
01:25:23.700 | I didn't belong there.
01:25:24.820 | I didn't earn, I didn't pay for it.
01:25:26.420 | Somebody just gave it to me.
01:25:28.220 | Imagine if I was walking around,
01:25:31.220 | I was like, "Oh, these peasants."
01:25:33.740 | You know what I mean?
01:25:34.700 | How dare they look into first class?
01:25:37.460 | What's wrong with these people?
01:25:38.820 | Only if they worked as hard as I did
01:25:40.900 | and they could sit up here, you know?
01:25:44.580 | Close that curtain.
01:25:46.600 | You know what I mean?
01:25:47.760 | I'm eating my food and I'm filled with pride
01:25:51.560 | because I'm in first class.
01:25:52.600 | Not the whole time I was there,
01:25:53.840 | 'cause I was fully aware, you know what I mean?
01:25:56.280 | These people are, I don't know what they're doing in life.
01:25:58.840 | Maybe CEOs of companies,
01:26:00.040 | I don't know what they're doing in life,
01:26:01.120 | but maybe they belong there,
01:26:02.120 | but I knew I didn't, 'cause I didn't earn this.
01:26:05.120 | Every single one of us in this room that knows Christ
01:26:10.760 | was saved by the grace of God.
01:26:13.720 | We won a spiritual lottery that you and I did not deserve.
01:26:16.920 | We didn't deserve this.
01:26:19.600 | So imagine people who are saved by the grace of God,
01:26:24.320 | nothing that you have done,
01:26:26.280 | nothing that you will ever do,
01:26:27.560 | simply by the grace of God
01:26:29.400 | and live the rest of our lives thinking,
01:26:31.900 | "Oh my gosh, these guys stink.
01:26:33.800 | "Why can't they be more righteous?
01:26:37.140 | "Why can't they know more?
01:26:38.340 | "Why can't they do this more?"
01:26:41.400 | Can you imagine what that looks like from God?
01:26:44.120 | How he saved us by the grace of God
01:26:47.460 | and we're spending the rest of our time
01:26:49.400 | disgusted by other people's sins,
01:26:55.880 | because we have forgotten the disgust
01:26:59.360 | that he saved us from.
01:27:00.800 | What do you think the scripture means
01:27:04.120 | to live up to the gospel of Jesus Christ?
