00:33:55.140 | into the text this morning, 57.
00:33:57.540 | Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth,
00:34:00.860 | and she gave birth to a son.
00:34:02.260 | Her neighbors and her relatives heard

00:34:19.020 | And they said to her, "There is no one among your relatives

00:35:28.260 | "from the hand of our enemies,
00:35:29.740 | "might serve him without fear."
00:35:32.220 | All right, let's pray.
00:35:33.320 | Father, we pray for your blessing,
00:35:36.420 | we pray for your grace, we pray for deeper understanding,
00:35:40.420 | that we may see a greater and greater glimpse of your glory
00:35:44.020 | and what you are doing in redemptive history.
00:35:47.020 | So we pray for help, Lord God,
00:35:49.220 | to not only understand but to illuminate our hearts,
00:35:52.240 | that we may love you, honor you,
00:35:53.820 | worship you, and follow you.
00:35:55.580 | In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
00:35:57.380 | As I mentioned, the beginning,
00:36:02.220 | the text that we're looking at starting from 57,
00:36:05.180 | John is born, and on the eighth day,
00:36:08.060 | just like any other good Jew,
00:36:10.100 | they came to circumcise him.
00:36:12.600 | And as you guys know, the circumcision for the Jews
00:36:14.940 | was a reminder to them that Israelites
00:36:17.480 | were God's chosen people and it was a covenant symbol
00:36:19.860 | upon them.
00:36:20.940 | And so as tradition goes, as on the eighth day,
00:36:23.300 | they came to circumcise him and they fully expected
00:36:26.620 | that he was going to be named Zacharias
00:36:28.320 | because of his father, because that was the tradition.
00:36:31.160 | Either you were named as a father or a grandfather
00:36:34.380 | or somebody in that family in order to keep that name going.
00:36:37.940 | Instead, John's birth obviously is not like any other Jew
00:36:42.940 | because he was specifically given to an old couple
00:36:46.180 | to fulfill God's promise.
00:36:48.660 | And so instead of giving him the name Zacharias,
00:36:51.060 | he said, no, the name is already determined.
00:36:52.860 | His name will be John.
00:36:55.160 | Because it was already given to him.
00:36:56.300 | God had anointed this, so this was not up to the parents
00:36:59.100 | to decide.
00:37:00.600 | So God had already given him his name, John.
00:37:03.220 | And the reason why the name John was given
00:37:05.700 | is because his name was a foretelling
00:37:09.740 | of what God is about to do.
00:37:11.180 | His name means Yahweh is gracious.
00:37:14.780 | God is going to demonstrate his grace,
00:37:16.540 | that through this man that God was going to appear
00:37:20.500 | in redemptive history at that particular time
00:37:23.500 | in order to reveal his grace.
00:37:26.360 | So this morning as we look at the text,
00:37:29.060 | as he breaks out into this prophecy,
00:37:32.300 | that he's going to reveal how this grace
00:37:34.780 | is going to be fulfilled, what God is doing.
00:37:37.460 | And so this is all an introduction,
00:37:39.480 | really the text that we're looking at from 67 to 74,
00:37:43.660 | of how God's grace is being revealed.
00:37:46.100 | Because when we think about grace,
00:37:50.060 | when we think about grace,
00:37:51.500 | because our natural knee-jerk reaction
00:37:54.820 | to how we understand grace is us.
00:37:57.740 | How is God gracious to us?
00:38:01.960 | Or to me in particular?
00:38:03.580 | So when we ask, like when Thanksgiving comes around,
00:38:06.180 | we ask, what are you thankful for?
00:38:08.380 | In other words, how has God been gracious to you?
00:38:11.380 | We kind of think through, scan through the year,
00:38:13.820 | and say, you know what, I got a good job,
00:38:16.340 | God has been gracious.
00:38:18.220 | Or maybe I was sick and then God answered my prayer,
00:38:20.400 | so God has been gracious.
00:38:22.140 | Maybe there's some things that we were praying for,
00:38:24.660 | and so God shows up in our life,
00:38:26.420 | and so God has been gracious.
00:38:28.540 | So our typical thinking of how we see the grace of God
00:38:32.060 | is really centered on us.
00:38:34.260 | What have we experienced?
00:38:36.060 | But here he says, in verse 68,
00:38:39.820 | "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
00:38:41.780 | "for he has visited us
00:38:44.420 | "and accomplished redemption for his people."
00:38:47.940 | See, God's primary revelation of his grace
00:38:52.660 | is his redemption.
00:38:54.140 | But we have a tendency to kind of like,
00:38:56.940 | well, you know, of course God saved us,
00:38:58.540 | but that's something that has happened.
00:39:01.560 | But how has he been gracious to me today?
00:39:03.500 | What's happening now?
00:39:05.460 | Our natural inclination, as it says in Romans chapter one,
00:39:09.580 | is to give credit to man rather than to God.
00:39:13.140 | That's our knee-jerk reaction to everything,
00:39:16.960 | to give credit to man rather than God.
00:39:19.500 | Look at the way that we celebrate
00:39:21.460 | the seven wonders of the world, right?
00:39:23.640 | I don't know how many of you guys have been
00:39:24.900 | to the Great Wall of China.
00:39:26.940 | You know, I remember growing up
00:39:28.140 | hearing through history books, you know,
00:39:30.300 | over and over how awesome this structure is
00:39:33.480 | and how you could see it from outside the earth,
00:39:36.120 | and it took so many years to build this structure,
00:39:39.500 | and how many people gave their lives.
00:39:41.700 | And I remember the years of going in and out of China,
00:39:45.140 | I probably must have visited that wall
00:39:46.620 | about at least 20 times.
00:39:47.960 | And each time I went, it became less and less great,
00:39:53.240 | and more and more just a wall.
00:39:55.620 | You know, but when we talk about today,
00:39:56.780 | it's a great wall, it's so fantastic,
00:39:58.540 | the achievement of man, and how much time we spend
00:40:01.780 | being awed by the pile of stones that people put together,
00:40:07.580 | and then never recognize the mountain that it sits on.
00:40:10.800 | And if you think about that, how much is written about it,
00:40:15.440 | how much history, and how people travel
00:40:17.380 | from all over the world to walk on this wall,
00:40:20.980 | and then not recognize the mountain that it sits on,
00:40:23.740 | the rocks that God had created,
00:40:25.540 | so that they could put it together, the sky above.
00:40:29.980 | And yet our natural tendency is to look at
00:40:32.580 | the creation of man and say, wow, isn't that awesome?
00:40:36.380 | So even when we think about grace,
00:40:39.340 | we typically think about grace as it pertains to me,
00:40:42.080 | in particular, in my life.
00:40:44.340 | Yesterday, today, tomorrow, next year.
00:40:47.060 | How has God been gracious to me?
00:40:49.560 | See, this prophecy that Zacharias breaks out, right,
00:40:53.540 | in response to what angel Gabriel says,
00:40:57.040 | and in response to what God is doing,
00:40:58.460 | and his son John, God is gracious.
00:41:01.520 | The first thing that we remember,
00:41:04.420 | that he points out in his prophecy,
00:41:07.060 | is that God is gracious by remembering his covenant.
00:41:11.900 | God's grace is revealed through remembering his covenant.
00:41:17.780 | In verse 72, it says, "To show mercy toward our fathers,
00:41:20.660 | "and to remember his holy covenant,
00:41:22.440 | "the oath which he swore to Abraham, our father."
00:41:26.340 | He says, the covenant that God made with Abraham
00:41:30.820 | was 2,000 years before the showing up of John.
00:41:35.820 | But he says, John's name, God is gracious,
00:41:41.060 | is a revelation of God being faithful
00:41:43.800 | to a covenant that he made 2,000 years ago,
00:41:46.760 | to be faithful to that covenant.
00:41:49.740 | You see, it wasn't by accident
00:41:53.660 | that this prophecy is happening at John's circumcision,
00:41:58.220 | because the circumcision was a symbol
00:42:00.260 | to the nation of Israel,
00:42:01.780 | reminding them of the covenant that he gave to Israel
00:42:05.140 | in Genesis chapter 12.
00:42:07.540 | So every time a Jewish child is being circumcised,
00:42:10.660 | they most likely recited that covenant over and over again,
00:42:14.660 | that this circumcision is a symbol
00:42:17.300 | of God's faithfulness to Israel,
00:42:19.300 | the promise that God made in Genesis chapter 12.
00:42:21.900 | Now, Genesis chapter 12, one, two, three,
00:42:25.340 | is the beginning of this covenant
00:42:26.700 | to Abraham and the nation of Israel.
00:42:29.640 | If you've ever read through the Old Testament
00:42:31.300 | and you came across Genesis chapter 12, one, two, three,
00:42:33.900 | you may have just read that as like,
00:42:35.060 | oh, God has made these awesome promises to Abraham,
00:42:38.140 | and then may have just skipped over it,
00:42:39.540 | not really realizing the significance.
00:42:42.020 | Genesis chapter 12, one, two, three,
00:42:45.300 | is the backbone of what God is doing
00:42:48.260 | all throughout redemptive history.
00:42:50.140 | So how you understand that and how this is being fulfilled,
00:42:54.780 | why Book of Jonah, and why David, and why Micah,
00:42:59.220 | and why all these things are happening,
00:43:01.000 | it is a fulfillment of God's faithfulness to his covenant.
00:43:05.340 | If you don't see or read the Bible
00:43:07.240 | through the lens of this covenant,
00:43:08.900 | what's gonna end up happening is
00:43:10.540 | you're gonna see Jonah as a great story
00:43:13.040 | of don't mess with God, right?
00:43:15.740 | Don't mess with God.
00:43:16.580 | If you run from God when God calls you,
00:43:18.260 | a whale's gonna eat you up, right?
00:43:20.700 | You're gonna hear the story of David and say,
00:43:22.660 | well, David, because he was so great
00:43:24.860 | and practiced throwing his stones,
00:43:27.740 | and how God was able to use him mightily
00:43:29.580 | because he became an expert in throwing the stones,
00:43:32.020 | so don't trivialize the gift that God has given you
00:43:35.540 | and become an expert.
00:43:36.500 | And so you end up looking at all of Scripture
00:43:38.860 | and redemptive history as moral stories
00:43:42.300 | that you need to pick up
00:43:43.280 | so that we can become better people and be successful.
00:43:46.740 | But everything God says in the Old Testament
00:43:48.820 | and the New Testament is a flow,
00:43:53.460 | outflow of God fulfilling this promise.
00:43:57.840 | Why he does, why Israel's the way it is,
00:43:59.760 | why does the Old Testament end the way it does,
00:44:01.720 | why is this prophecy here,
00:44:02.840 | what does it say in the book of Revelation?
00:44:04.400 | All of it is connected to this promise, Abrahamic promise.
00:44:07.680 | So how important is this, right?
00:44:09.640 | I can't emphasize enough.
00:44:12.500 | So is it important for us to understand what he promised?
00:44:15.120 | Yes, so there's three things
00:44:16.840 | that he promised the nation of Israel.
00:44:18.960 | One, he promised land, right?
00:44:22.240 | In Genesis chapter 12, one, two, three, he promised land.
00:44:24.860 | Second, he promised numerous offspring, right?
00:44:29.000 | These descendants are going to be so numerous
00:44:30.600 | they're not even gonna be able to count.
00:44:31.760 | Third, he promised a blessing upon them to the world, right?
00:44:36.760 | So there's gonna be a clear purpose.
00:44:38.360 | So just to kind of summarize,
00:44:41.680 | the promise of land is a specific promise
00:44:44.800 | of their political nation.
00:44:47.240 | It wasn't just like Abraham say,
00:44:49.360 | oh, you're gonna be rich
00:44:50.400 | and you're gonna have all this land.
00:44:52.060 | Land, you can have a million people,
00:44:54.800 | but if you don't have a land, you're not a nation.
00:44:56.620 | You're just a people group.
00:44:58.520 | So when he promises land, he says,
00:45:00.360 | through your descendants, I'm gonna create a nation.
00:45:03.100 | A nation of Israel is gonna come out of that.
00:45:05.180 | But it's not gonna be any just ordinary nation.
00:45:08.380 | Your descendants are going to outnumber even the stars,
00:45:12.060 | right?
00:45:12.940 | Today, when we consider who the superpowers are,
00:45:15.520 | I mean, United States, I think,
00:45:17.220 | you know, we can argue and say
00:45:18.620 | it's probably the most powerful nation in the world.
00:45:23.320 | But we're not the most numerous, right?
00:45:25.380 | China is, and then after that is India, right?
00:45:29.380 | And so today, we don't measure the power
00:45:33.300 | of the nation by its size.
00:45:35.500 | We measure it by influence, economy, the military, right?
00:45:40.500 | But back then, to be numerous basically meant
00:45:42.980 | that you were the superpower.
00:45:44.180 | So when he says that your descendants
00:45:45.980 | are going to be outnumbered,
00:45:47.340 | your nation is not gonna be any other nation.
00:45:49.300 | It's going to be the superpower,
00:45:51.240 | more than any other nation.
00:45:52.340 | And then third and finally,
00:45:53.660 | that God's anointing is gonna be upon them,
00:45:56.800 | that if they bless you, they're gonna be blessed.
00:45:59.460 | And if they curse you, they will be cursed.
00:46:00.820 | In other words, God's anointing,
00:46:02.500 | God's redemptive history,
00:46:04.300 | what he's trying to do to the world,
00:46:06.660 | through the world, is going to come
00:46:08.500 | through the nation of Israel, okay?
00:46:10.580 | So keep that in mind.
00:46:11.940 | It's a promise of nation, it's promise of power,
00:46:16.500 | and it's promise of influence, right?
00:46:20.340 | After he makes this promise, again, all right,
00:46:25.340 | so if I'm losing any of you, pinch each other, okay?
00:46:29.800 | Like I said, it's not gonna get any lighter.
00:46:32.100 | We're gonna go even deeper than this, okay?
00:46:34.700 | Again, but I can't emphasize enough how important this is.
00:46:37.540 | After he makes this covenant with Israel,
00:46:41.300 | Abraham, in Genesis chapter 15,
00:46:45.380 | he ratifies this with the covenant.
00:46:48.900 | You know, today, when people get married, right?
00:46:50.820 | We had a wedding yesterday.
00:46:52.460 | People typically sit, you have the bride's party
00:46:55.700 | on one side, and you have the groom's party
00:46:57.020 | on the other side, and why do we do that, right?
00:47:00.140 | Is it so that they don't get in a fight, right?
00:47:02.580 | To identify who's who?
00:47:04.800 | No, it's a reflection of a biblical covenant,
00:47:07.660 | because in the time of Christ and prior to Christ,
00:47:11.860 | the way that they ratify covenants was,
00:47:14.060 | they would take an animal, split it in two,
00:47:16.140 | to two, and make an aisle,
00:47:19.420 | and the people who are entering this covenant
00:47:21.180 | would go hand in hand and walk through
00:47:22.940 | between these animals that have been split in half,
00:47:25.340 | and it was a bloody scene.
00:47:26.940 | You can imagine the blood dripping everywhere,
00:47:28.860 | and so basically, what it meant was,
00:47:30.920 | if two people who are walking down this covenant,
00:47:33.580 | if any one of them breaks this covenant,
00:47:35.640 | let it be like these animals.
00:47:37.300 | That's what it meant.
00:47:39.020 | That's how serious this covenant, it was a blood covenant,
00:47:41.260 | that if anyone who enters into this covenant
00:47:43.540 | and breaks a covenant, let him be like this animal.
00:47:46.140 | That's how covenants were ratified at that time,
00:47:48.480 | but in Genesis chapter 15, when God ratifies this covenant
00:47:52.100 | that he made with the nation of Israel,
00:47:54.500 | Abraham is put to sleep.
00:47:56.540 | He doesn't participate in this covenant.
00:47:59.420 | He falls asleep, and then in verse 18, it says,
00:48:01.720 | "On that day, the Lord made a covenant with Abram,
00:48:03.560 | "saying, 'To your descendants, I have given this land
00:48:05.800 | "'from the river of Egypt, as far as the great river,
00:48:08.180 | "'the river Euphrates.'
00:48:09.980 | "God shows up in a pillar of smoke, a flaming torch,
00:48:13.860 | "and he passes it by himself."
00:48:16.660 | The significance of that is God
00:48:19.500 | was making a unilateral covenant.
00:48:21.580 | This was not a conditional covenant based upon Abraham,
00:48:25.020 | that if you do your part, I will do my part.
00:48:26.820 | He is telling Abraham, "I will do this."
00:48:30.860 | There was no part that Abraham was gonna play.
00:48:34.240 | Abraham is just going to be a recipient of God's plan.
00:48:40.240 | Now, keep that in mind, why this is so significant.
00:48:44.480 | It's gonna get deeper.
00:48:45.540 | Because this covenant that he makes with Abraham,
00:48:51.280 | unilateral covenant, is what God is doing
00:48:54.140 | all throughout redemptive history.
00:48:56.440 | So every part of the Bible that we read
00:49:01.020 | is God saving the world through the nation of Israel.
00:49:06.480 | So if you read any part of the Bible
00:49:09.280 | disconnected from this covenant,
00:49:11.400 | you're probably not reading it correctly.
00:49:13.740 | Or again, you're making David a moral champion,
00:49:18.840 | or you're making Jonah a prophet,
00:49:22.040 | and this is what real repentance looks like,
00:49:24.200 | but you don't really understand why that story is there.
00:49:26.720 | Why is the book of Esther there?
00:49:27.960 | Why is Ezra there?
00:49:29.280 | Why are the prophets there?
00:49:30.240 | All of this is connected to God
00:49:32.080 | trying to fulfill this promise.
00:49:34.920 | Now, he makes this promise, right,
00:49:39.080 | that you're gonna be a great nation,
00:49:40.200 | you're gonna be a powerful nation,
00:49:41.280 | you're gonna be a great influence.
00:49:42.980 | When does that get fulfilled?
00:49:45.640 | It takes a thousand years of Israel wandering
00:49:52.920 | in the desert, going through places in almost periods
00:49:58.480 | where they feel like they're gonna disappear,
00:49:59.880 | and then they go into Egypt to survive,
00:50:03.120 | and then they become slaves for 400 years.
00:50:05.040 | A thousand years passes by
00:50:07.240 | before a nation even gets formed.
00:50:11.480 | A thousand years pass by between Abraham and David.
00:50:17.800 | And so when David becomes the king,
00:50:19.960 | the second king of Israel, God steps in,
00:50:24.300 | and then he clarifies how he was going to fulfill
00:50:27.240 | this Abrahamic covenant in 2 Samuel 7, verse 12 to 13.
00:50:33.240 | "When your days are complete
00:50:34.960 | "and you lie down with your fathers,
00:50:36.460 | "I will raise up your descendants after you
00:50:38.340 | "who will come forth from you,
00:50:40.160 | "and I will establish his kingdom.
00:50:41.940 | "He shall build a house for my name,
00:50:43.640 | "and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever."
00:50:46.680 | You notice with the Abrahamic covenant,
00:50:48.360 | he promises a great nation, but then here he says
00:50:52.200 | the way that's gonna happen is through a king.
00:50:55.160 | He doesn't say your descendants, but your descendant,
00:50:58.420 | this king, this messiah.
00:51:00.920 | Going back to the text that we're looking at,
00:51:03.680 | Zechariah chapter one, 67 through 74,
00:51:07.920 | he mentions how he raised up a horn of salvation for us
00:51:11.640 | in the house of David, his servant.
00:51:13.040 | In other words, Jesus is the fulfillment of that prophecy.
00:51:17.020 | Jesus is the fulfillment of that prophecy that he made.
00:51:21.640 | But the fulfillment of that prophecy,
00:51:23.600 | how long did it take for Jesus to even show up?
00:51:27.460 | Another thousand years.
00:51:29.520 | Thousand years before Abraham and David,
00:51:31.840 | and then another thousand year passes
00:51:33.720 | after the promise that he's made.
00:51:35.480 | This Davidic covenant is so important
00:51:38.440 | that the Bible mentions this covenant 40 separate times.
00:51:41.840 | And the reason why they mention it 40 times
00:51:45.620 | is because every period of darkness in Israel's history,
00:51:50.000 | they would recite this covenant to remind each other,
00:51:53.500 | we still have hope, because God made this covenant
00:51:57.740 | and the king is coming,
00:51:59.920 | who's going to fulfill God's covenant.
00:52:03.520 | So can you imagine the people during the time of Christ?
00:52:06.920 | 2,000 years have passed
00:52:09.120 | since the covenant that he made with Abraham,
00:52:11.200 | and 2,000 years later, Zechariah says
00:52:14.360 | that he is going to be gracious
00:52:17.880 | and he's going to visit us for the purpose of redemption,
00:52:22.520 | and the promise that he made to David
00:52:25.240 | is being fulfilled now in Christ,
00:52:27.880 | and John is going to come
00:52:29.040 | and he's going to prepare the way for that king to come.
00:52:31.840 | You can imagine that during the time of Christ,
00:52:35.800 | many people probably already lost hope.
00:52:38.100 | I mean, it's been 2,000 years.
00:52:40.600 | When's the last time somebody made you a promise
00:52:43.680 | and it didn't happen right away,
00:52:44.800 | and you're just like, ah, forget it, don't trust that guy.
00:52:47.680 | How long would you wait before you cling on to this hope?
00:52:50.560 | 2,000 years have passed.
00:52:54.720 | Many of Israel has already forgotten.
00:52:57.600 | They moved on.
00:52:59.040 | They built their own plans.
00:53:00.200 | Some of them have just completely walked away
00:53:01.920 | from their faith,
00:53:02.820 | but the few faithful, like Zacharias and Elizabeth
00:53:08.560 | and Mary and Joseph,
00:53:11.000 | they were just clinging on,
00:53:13.680 | and that's why they, can you imagine the excitement?
00:53:17.080 | But I can understand why so many people walked away,
00:53:19.840 | because after God promises to David,
00:53:24.800 | you would think like, oh, Messiah's going to come,
00:53:26.520 | and so Israel's going to become a superpower
00:53:28.720 | and we're going to be an influence to the world
00:53:30.400 | that we're going to take over the superpower.
00:53:32.360 | Instead, right after God makes that promise to David,
00:53:36.640 | David commits a horrendous sin.
00:53:38.800 | He commits adultery.
00:53:42.440 | In order to hide that, he commits murder,
00:53:44.960 | and as a result of his sin,
00:53:46.480 | God says that the kingdom's going to be divided.
00:53:49.960 | His son, Solomon, comes into the throne,
00:53:52.920 | and instead of worshiping God all his life
00:53:55.600 | with all the wisdom and knowledge that God gave him,
00:53:59.480 | he uses that to pleasure himself,
00:54:01.360 | and all his life, and only at the tail end of his life,
00:54:04.760 | he's like, oh, man, I pursued all these things
00:54:07.080 | in empty, empty, vanity, vanity, all is vanity,
00:54:09.660 | and after that, the kingdom splits in half.
00:54:12.800 | 10 kingdom, 10 tribes end up rebelling
00:54:16.400 | against the nation of Israel.
00:54:17.720 | They create their own nation,
00:54:19.160 | and every single one of those kings after that
00:54:21.920 | were corrupt and evil.
00:54:23.080 | Only two nations, two tribes remained faithful,
00:54:27.000 | the Benjamites and the tribe of Judah,
00:54:30.320 | but even them, majority of them,
00:54:32.320 | with the exception of maybe about three or four of them,
00:54:34.480 | remained faithful to God,
00:54:35.640 | and all of them choose to rebel against God.
00:54:39.480 | I mean, it's like, God made this promise.
00:54:40.760 | The kingdom's going to come.
00:54:41.880 | They're going to become a superpower.
00:54:43.300 | Instead, the guy who receives this promise
00:54:46.480 | ends up committing a sin, becomes a murderer.
00:54:48.520 | His son chases after the world.
00:54:50.120 | The kingdom is split.
00:54:51.360 | Every king that represents God to the nation
00:54:54.520 | is corrupt and leading them to worship idols,
00:54:57.440 | so every prophet that comes to speak
00:55:03.520 | to the nation of Israel,
00:55:04.840 | all the prophets fall into three categories,
00:55:09.120 | pre-exile, exile, and post-exile.
00:55:12.080 | The people that God sends before the exile
00:55:15.080 | is to warn the nation of Israel,
00:55:16.400 | if you do not repent, you're going to be taken away.
00:55:18.320 | Your nation's going to be gone.
00:55:20.400 | Babylonians are going to come.
00:55:22.440 | The Persians are going to come.
00:55:23.360 | They're going to take you,
00:55:24.200 | and all that is precious to you
00:55:25.840 | are going to be forced into slavery if you do not repent,
00:55:29.160 | so they don't repent,
00:55:32.040 | and then you have the prophets
00:55:33.600 | who come during the period of the exile.
00:55:36.060 | What has happened to you was not by accident.
00:55:38.240 | It's because God places hands upon you,
00:55:41.880 | so if you do not repent, there is no restoration,
00:55:45.160 | so the prophets come and try to get them
00:55:47.760 | to repent during the exile,
00:55:49.200 | and then there's the post-exile.
00:55:52.280 | They even, after all of that,
00:55:53.840 | a few remnant come back to Israel.
00:55:56.000 | Majority of them has already abandoned God,
00:55:58.960 | and it's period after period after period,
00:56:02.560 | prophet after prophet after prophet appealing to Israel.
00:56:08.040 | Have you forgotten God?
00:56:09.280 | Have you forgotten God?
00:56:11.080 | Malachi is the last prophet that speaks,
00:56:14.360 | and after he speaks, for 400 years,
00:56:17.280 | there's dead silence, no prophet, nothing.
00:56:21.080 | There's a famine of the word of God,
00:56:23.160 | and God no longer speaks to them,
00:56:25.080 | so 1,000 years between Abraham and David,
00:56:30.080 | and then another 1,000 years of utter chaos
00:56:33.720 | from David to the time of Christ,
00:56:37.440 | so we can understand why so many of them
00:56:39.600 | have already drifted out.
00:56:41.600 | Maybe we have exhausted his grace.
00:56:43.800 | Maybe God gave us a chance and we blew it,
00:56:47.400 | but the few who remain held on.
00:56:51.440 | But again, remember, the promise of a nation,
00:56:56.120 | promise of their power, promise of their influence, right?
00:57:00.020 | But it never happened.
00:57:02.840 | It never happened, right?
00:57:06.080 | Nation of Israel was never a superpower, ever.
00:57:09.400 | Even when they got back, there was a remnant.
00:57:12.400 | In fact, after this prophecy happened,
00:57:15.220 | what happens to the nation of Israel?
00:57:17.320 | God says that Israel, God's gonna be faithful
00:57:20.160 | to the Abrahamic covenant, to the Davidic covenant,
00:57:22.120 | the king is going to come, he's gonna squash the enemies,
00:57:25.000 | and they're gonna be to worship God without fear
00:57:26.880 | because they're gonna become the superpower.
00:57:28.960 | Does that ever happen?
00:57:30.020 | No, it never happens.
00:57:32.240 | The nation never comes back.
00:57:34.360 | In fact, they enter into the darkest period of their history.
00:57:39.360 | In AD 70, they are wiped out, completely, gone.
00:57:45.600 | You would think that after Zachariah makes his prophecy
00:57:49.640 | that Israel would be reestablished,
00:57:51.560 | Jesus is brought on his throne,
00:57:53.400 | in the end, we enter into eternity,
00:57:58.440 | that all the promise they've been waiting for 2,000 years
00:58:00.920 | will be fulfilled.
00:58:01.740 | Instead, they go into the darkest period of their history.
00:58:06.740 | You can imagine why the disciples
00:58:10.140 | were so stuck on this kingdom idea
00:58:12.500 | because every hope that they had,
00:58:15.900 | every darkness that they experienced,
00:58:18.460 | they only had one solution, the Messiah's coming.
00:58:23.020 | The Messiah's coming.
00:58:24.420 | He promised us that we're gonna overthrow kingdoms,
00:58:28.060 | that our nation's gonna be the superpower,
00:58:29.800 | we're gonna be able to be an influence
00:58:31.540 | to the rest of the world.
00:58:33.220 | That's why, as Jesus was going to the cross,
00:58:36.040 | remember in the Gospel of Mark,
00:58:38.180 | it says Jesus made it crystal clear,
00:58:40.420 | he's going to Jerusalem, he's going to be beaten,
00:58:43.060 | put to death, and then he's gonna resurrect.
00:58:45.020 | Remember what the disciples were fighting over?
00:58:47.300 | Well, who's gonna be great in God's kingdom
00:58:50.500 | when that happens?
00:58:52.180 | Jesus says, "Well, I'm gonna die and be crucified.
00:58:55.180 | "I'm gonna be raised on the third day."
00:58:56.220 | Well, who's gonna sit on your left and to the right?
00:58:59.460 | Because they were so fixated.
00:59:00.740 | If he's gonna fulfill the kingdom now,
00:59:03.580 | and when that kingdom comes,
00:59:06.020 | when the Davidic covenant,
00:59:07.460 | when the Abrahamic covenant is ratified,
00:59:09.780 | it's fulfilled, man, we're his disciples, right?
00:59:14.460 | We're gonna be the greatest.
00:59:16.260 | And so they couldn't fathom,
00:59:18.540 | like why would the Messiah go to the cross?
00:59:21.060 | He said he's gonna conquer their enemies.
00:59:24.340 | How is he gonna conquer their enemies if he dies?
00:59:27.460 | So they heard him, but they didn't understand him.
00:59:29.460 | So remember the passage in Mark,
00:59:31.040 | they didn't wanna ask him
00:59:31.940 | because they felt like they're gonna get rebuked.
00:59:34.380 | You know what I mean?
00:59:35.220 | They didn't understand,
00:59:36.040 | and they didn't wanna even ask him.
00:59:38.340 | But that question doesn't end there.
00:59:43.060 | After Jesus dies and he resurrects,
00:59:46.780 | can you imagine, right?
00:59:49.300 | They were afraid, it's like,
00:59:50.620 | why is he going to the cross?
00:59:51.580 | They don't understand, so he dies and he resurrects.
00:59:53.300 | It's like, oh my gosh.
00:59:54.720 | If they had hope before the cross,
00:59:57.260 | they can't even kill him.
00:59:58.980 | Even if they kill him, we saw what he did to him.
01:00:02.780 | They punctured him with a spear.
01:00:05.580 | It's one thing for him to raise Lazarus,
01:00:07.900 | but he raises himself.
01:00:09.440 | On the third day, he comes back in his glorified body.
01:00:14.060 | So can you imagine the hope that was dashed before the cross
01:00:18.220 | and after the cross?
01:00:20.120 | Can you imagine?
01:00:21.060 | This guy, they can't even kill him.
01:00:25.460 | And so the disciples, before Jesus ascends,
01:00:29.140 | this is what happens, Acts chapter one, three.
01:00:31.100 | To these, he also presented himself alive
01:00:33.420 | after suffering by many convincing proofs,
01:00:35.260 | appearing to them over a period of 40 days,
01:00:37.300 | speaking of the things concerning what?
01:00:39.220 | The kingdom of God.
01:00:40.500 | He spent that whole time after the resurrection
01:00:45.040 | because he knows that the Israelites are fixated on this.
01:00:48.300 | He knows that his disciples are fixated on this
01:00:50.440 | because this is what they've been waiting for
01:00:51.860 | for 2,000 years.
01:00:53.900 | So now he's explaining to them
01:00:55.660 | that some things that you're thinking may not be correct.
01:00:58.620 | And so he's explained the kingdom of God,
01:01:00.440 | but the whole time, this is, when he says kingdom of God,
01:01:04.160 | the Jews are thinking Abrahamic covenant,
01:01:05.700 | the Davidic covenant, right?
01:01:07.420 | But listen to what he says, verse six.
01:01:10.940 | So when they, the disciples, had come together,
01:01:14.200 | they were asking him, saying,
01:01:15.260 | "Lord, is it at this time
01:01:16.780 | "you are restoring the kingdom to what?
01:01:18.760 | "To Israel, right, to Israel."
01:01:22.060 | He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epics
01:01:25.460 | "which the Father has fixed by his own authority."
01:01:28.940 | The disciples are not thinking kingdom
01:01:30.680 | as in just a spiritual kingdom.
01:01:32.000 | He's talking about the fulfillment
01:01:33.460 | of Abrahamic, Davidic covenant to Israel, right?
01:01:37.500 | Now this is the part where you guys are kind of like,
01:01:40.020 | all right, just listen anyway.
01:01:41.460 | If I already lost you, just listen anyway.
01:01:44.440 | File it away because when I first heard it in seminary,
01:01:47.900 | I didn't understand it either.
01:01:49.140 | It took me a while and it started sinking in.
01:01:51.780 | But this is that important, right?
01:01:54.420 | This is not one of those things you're kind of like,
01:01:56.020 | oh, this is for the theologians
01:01:57.340 | or these are for the pastors.
01:01:59.420 | This is the lens in which you see all of scripture.
01:02:02.980 | So if you have a superficial understanding of this
01:02:06.580 | and how this is connected to everything that God is doing,
01:02:09.200 | that you're always going to have
01:02:10.320 | a superficial understanding, right?
01:02:12.400 | So understandable in the beginning
01:02:14.460 | that you're studying the Bible,
01:02:15.940 | that you're not gonna be able to connect the dots, right?
01:02:18.780 | But I guarantee you, once you are able to start
01:02:21.780 | to connect the dots, the Bible is going to make
01:02:23.620 | so much more sense to you.
01:02:24.920 | You're gonna see the connection
01:02:27.060 | between Genesis and Revelation
01:02:29.340 | and you see why we make a big deal about baptism
01:02:32.460 | and communion and everything that we do.
01:02:34.020 | It's all connected to this, okay?
01:02:35.500 | No, that's just a side point, okay?
01:02:37.780 | The disciples ask, they've never given up on hope on this.
01:02:43.300 | We thought you going to the cross
01:02:44.860 | was going to nullify the covenant
01:02:47.380 | because you're gonna die.
01:02:48.220 | If you're the fulfillment of the covenant and you die,
01:02:50.420 | how is this gonna happen?
01:02:51.420 | But when he resurrects from the dead,
01:02:53.180 | the hope is revived again.
01:02:54.660 | So he said, "Now are you going to,
01:02:55.820 | "are you now going to fulfill this?"
01:02:57.540 | And Jesus says, "You do not know the time or the hour."
01:03:00.340 | If he was talking about the church,
01:03:03.260 | 'cause some people say, "Well, the church fulfilled that."
01:03:06.380 | Then Jesus knows exactly when this is gonna happen
01:03:08.660 | because the Pentecost is gonna happen in the next chapter.
01:03:11.700 | The Holy Spirit's gonna come,
01:03:12.860 | they're gonna be filled with the Holy Spirit
01:03:14.500 | and the New Testament church is inaugurated.
01:03:18.120 | But he doesn't say that.
01:03:19.440 | He doesn't say, "Oh, it's gonna happen," right?
01:03:22.080 | The spiritual kingdom of God's gonna happen.
01:03:23.720 | He says, "No, you do not know the time or the hour.
01:03:25.600 | "It is appointed by God, but you,
01:03:29.240 | "the Holy Spirit's gonna come upon you
01:03:31.360 | "and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,
01:03:34.400 | "to the remotest part of the world."
01:03:36.240 | Until the time where God has anointed
01:03:39.720 | that Israel is going to be established,
01:03:43.360 | until that happens, you go preach the gospel.
01:03:47.320 | You establish the church in Jerusalem, Judea,
01:03:51.360 | and outside of Jerusalem to bring the Gentiles in.
01:03:55.280 | That's the period that we're in, right?
01:03:57.360 | Are you with me?
01:04:02.280 | You guys are looking at me like,
01:04:04.520 | I get it, but I don't get it, right?
01:04:07.080 | Fathers, this is something that you might have to go back
01:04:09.220 | and re-listen to, okay?
01:04:10.680 | So put that mind on.
01:04:12.520 | The Jews are concerned, the disciples are concerned.
01:04:15.320 | It says, it's going to happen.
01:04:17.800 | You just don't know the time or the hour,
01:04:19.120 | but it's gonna happen, but now you go preach the gospel.
01:04:23.760 | The whole of the New Testament is written
01:04:29.280 | to convince the Jews that God's design
01:04:34.280 | for redemptive history is not just the Jews,
01:04:37.160 | that God has something much bigger in mind than the Jews,
01:04:39.740 | but he's going to do it through the Jews, right?
01:04:42.920 | So in Romans chapter 11, the whole chapter 11,
01:04:47.440 | is to answer that question.
01:04:49.480 | If all have sinned, fall short of the glory of God,
01:04:52.840 | not just the Gentiles, but even the Jews,
01:04:55.680 | even though they've been obeying the law,
01:04:57.440 | at least the remnant of them,
01:04:59.120 | that everyone needs to be forgiven by the blood of Christ.
01:05:02.960 | If that's the case, what's the benefit of being a Jew?
01:05:07.160 | Does that mean that God has nullified his promise
01:05:10.040 | that he made to the nation of Israel?
01:05:11.480 | Or does that mean that God has somehow fulfilled it
01:05:13.360 | in the church so there's no longer need
01:05:15.120 | for the nation of Israel?
01:05:17.040 | Some people will argue and say, Israel's gone.
01:05:20.560 | They had their chance and they blew it,
01:05:22.900 | so God transferred what he was trying to do to the church.
01:05:27.900 | That everything that God promised the nation of Israel,
01:05:31.920 | when he said Israel, he didn't really mean Israel,
01:05:33.560 | he meant the church, right?
01:05:35.300 | Everything that he promised,
01:05:38.920 | he was actually just talking figuratively,
01:05:41.020 | even though that's how the Jews understand it.
01:05:44.120 | So Paul is answering that question.
01:05:46.640 | Is God done with Israel?
01:05:48.480 | He made a promise.
01:05:49.320 | When Jesus was appearing, he says,
01:05:51.080 | God is fulfilling the Abrahamic promise.
01:05:52.760 | He's being faithful.
01:05:53.760 | He's fulfilling the Davidic covenant,
01:05:55.640 | and yet now you say that the gospel's going to the Gentiles?
01:05:58.800 | And that's the question that he answers in Romans 11.
01:06:03.000 | I say that God has not rejected his people, has he?
01:06:06.160 | In other words, this covenant that God made with Israel,
01:06:08.600 | is he done?
01:06:09.880 | Is he moving on to the Gentiles?
01:06:12.380 | May it never be, for I too am an Israelite,
01:06:16.220 | a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
01:06:19.300 | God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.
01:06:22.300 | When he says his people,
01:06:23.540 | he's talking about the Israelites whom he foreknew.
01:06:26.740 | He had a personal, intimate knowledge and love for them.
01:06:28.900 | He called them the apple of his eye.
01:06:31.780 | He did not change his mind.
01:06:33.900 | They did not fall from God's grace.
01:06:35.500 | Romans 11, 11 through 15.
01:06:37.340 | I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they?
01:06:40.080 | Meaning, did they have their chance and then they blew it,
01:06:42.980 | and so now God is done with them?
01:06:44.400 | May it never be, but by their transgression,
01:06:47.320 | salvation has come to the Gentiles to make them jealous.
01:06:51.140 | Because of their failure,
01:06:53.780 | the period of the Gentiles has come in.
01:06:56.200 | Now, don't you think it's interesting
01:06:58.340 | that as soon as the church is inaugurated,
01:07:01.000 | Israel is demolished?
01:07:03.640 | Exactly the opposite of what it seems like is gonna happen.
01:07:08.100 | They waited 2,000 years.
01:07:10.480 | Angel Gabriel comes.
01:07:11.900 | The Messiah that you've been waiting for is gonna come,
01:07:13.980 | and he's gonna fulfill the promise that he made with David.
01:07:16.280 | All the enemies are gonna be squashed,
01:07:18.800 | and then another 40 years later,
01:07:21.060 | Israel actually just disappears, AD 70.
01:07:24.060 | So, I mean, imagine if you're Israel saying,
01:07:28.420 | "God, it must be done."
01:07:29.720 | One final hope we had with Jesus,
01:07:33.540 | and now Israel doesn't even exist,
01:07:34.980 | at least before we existed with oppression,
01:07:37.260 | but now we don't even exist,
01:07:38.580 | and they disappear for how many years?
01:07:40.820 | 2,000 years.
01:07:43.140 | 2,000 years between Abraham to Jesus,
01:07:47.420 | and then 2,000 years, nation of Israel disappears,
01:07:50.700 | and then they reappear in 1948 as a nation.
01:07:55.300 | None of this is by accident.
01:08:01.280 | Let me continue to read in Romans 11, 24.
01:08:03.640 | It says, "For if you were cut off
01:08:04.880 | "from what is by nature a wild olive tree
01:08:07.360 | "and were grafted contrary to nature
01:08:09.580 | "into a cultivated olive tree,
01:08:11.320 | "how much more will these who are the natural branches
01:08:14.680 | "be grafted into their own olive tree?
01:08:17.840 | "For I do not want you, brethren,
01:08:19.840 | "to be uninformed of this mystery
01:08:21.280 | "so that you will not be wise in your own estimation,
01:08:24.020 | "that a partial hardening has happened to Israel
01:08:26.900 | "until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in."
01:08:30.120 | So during a period of Gentile for the church
01:08:32.280 | to bring in the non-Jews into the kingdom,
01:08:34.680 | and so all Israel will be saved.
01:08:37.680 | In other words, the nation of Israel will be reestablished,
01:08:40.640 | just as it is written,
01:08:41.600 | the deliverer will come from Zion,
01:08:43.520 | he will remove ungodliness from Jacob.
01:08:45.920 | This is the covenant with them,
01:08:48.520 | when I take away their sins.
01:08:50.920 | From the standpoint of the gospel,
01:08:52.400 | they are enemies for your sake,
01:08:53.720 | but from the standpoint of God's choice,
01:08:55.280 | they are beloved for the sake of the fathers,
01:08:57.040 | and then this is the punchline.
01:08:59.880 | "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."
01:09:04.140 | Now, the scripture clearly says, right?
01:09:10.920 | Our sanctification is being transformed
01:09:14.220 | from one set of glory to a greater set of glory.
01:09:18.340 | The more we see the glory of God
01:09:21.840 | as we study the scriptures and as we interact with God,
01:09:24.760 | he says we grow and mature.
01:09:27.540 | So sanctification isn't just adding more stuff
01:09:30.360 | and experiencing more stuff,
01:09:32.000 | it's understanding and recognizing his glory.
01:09:37.000 | And so when we recognize his glory
01:09:39.640 | and we begin to reflect that glory,
01:09:41.760 | he says that's when maturity and sanctification happens.
01:09:45.920 | Now, why do I say this?
01:09:47.340 | Because the more you dig through scripture,
01:09:50.800 | more you understand,
01:09:52.720 | what I just said was,
01:09:53.560 | I just gave you a Clipnote version.
01:09:56.280 | He says, "If the fall of the nation of Israel
01:10:00.040 | has opened the door, God's own people that he loved,
01:10:03.720 | because of their fall, we're experiencing his glory."
01:10:09.140 | He says, "How much more glory will you experience
01:10:11.900 | and know when Israel is restored to that glory,
01:10:15.420 | and we experience that glory
01:10:19.380 | through his faithfulness to the nation of Israel?"
01:10:21.120 | That's what he says here.
01:10:22.380 | When will that happen?
01:10:24.460 | Read the book of Revelation.
01:10:26.720 | In the book of Revelation,
01:10:27.680 | God fulfills all that promise
01:10:29.320 | that he made to the nation of Israel.
01:10:30.720 | All of that is fulfilled during the period of the millennium.
01:10:34.140 | Now, I already know a good chunk of this
01:10:39.040 | has gone over your head, right?
01:10:41.300 | And I was wrestling back and forth.
01:10:44.160 | It's like, "Oh, it's Sunday morning,
01:10:45.240 | we have different people,
01:10:46.280 | and some of you guys are visiting today."
01:10:47.520 | And it's like, "Oh my God,
01:10:48.800 | I didn't understand a word he said."
01:10:50.720 | Right?
01:10:51.560 | And some of you guys who may have been here for a while,
01:10:52.960 | it's just like, "Well, how am I gonna apply this today?"
01:10:56.260 | Right?
01:10:57.100 | "How do I be a good father, mother, brother, sister?
01:10:59.740 | I'm having financial problems.
01:11:00.740 | What is this gonna help?"
01:11:01.900 | Right?
01:11:02.740 | Character issues.
01:11:03.740 | "I'm having problems with my children.
01:11:05.660 | I'm struggling with purity.
01:11:07.100 | Like, how is this gonna help?"
01:11:08.340 | Right?
01:11:09.180 | Let me tell you why this is so important,
01:11:11.860 | and why, even though you didn't understand,
01:11:14.540 | okay, a lot of it may have gone over your head,
01:11:17.780 | I wanna give you three reasons
01:11:19.020 | why everything that I said is crucial.
01:11:21.660 | Right?
01:11:23.380 | Hopefully, for the rest of your life,
01:11:26.660 | that you don't just become hearers of the Word.
01:11:30.680 | Right?
01:11:31.520 | You just hear it, and you just teach me, feed me,
01:11:33.360 | that you become Bereans where you're actually digging.
01:11:36.340 | That if this confused you,
01:11:37.720 | and I'm telling you how important this is,
01:11:40.400 | that this will cause you to study, ask questions.
01:11:45.160 | 'Cause what I gave you was just a ClipTalk version.
01:11:47.640 | But let me give you three reasons why this is important.
01:11:50.960 | One, it's in the Bible.
01:11:53.880 | In fact, it's not just in the Bible.
01:11:55.560 | This is the backbone of redemptive history.
01:11:58.040 | Everything God is doing is somehow connected to this.
01:12:01.160 | There's a reason why, after 2,000 years,
01:12:04.060 | he said the Abrahamic covenant,
01:12:05.560 | the Davidic covenant, he is fulfilling.
01:12:07.560 | There is nothing in the Bible
01:12:11.480 | that you and I are allowed to take and to add.
01:12:16.320 | We live in a period right now
01:12:18.920 | where deconstructing our faith has become popular.
01:12:22.240 | It's become cool, right?
01:12:24.820 | The new age people who really are in the cutting edge,
01:12:29.100 | we're gonna challenge everything that we know,
01:12:30.980 | and say, oh, this part, I think God said this part,
01:12:33.440 | I didn't, I don't believe God said,
01:12:35.020 | and we're deconstructing our faith.
01:12:37.060 | And by doing so, we ourselves become God.
01:12:40.140 | We judge God and say, oh, I don't know if a God that I know
01:12:44.520 | would say such a thing.
01:12:46.440 | That doesn't happen, that didn't happen.
01:12:48.060 | And so we made ourselves God.
01:12:50.620 | If God is God, what he says is true,
01:12:54.020 | whether we like it or not.
01:12:55.720 | God is God, if he's the God of truth,
01:12:59.700 | you and I don't get to sit there and judge him
01:13:01.980 | because God judges us.
01:13:04.060 | The word of God judges the thoughts
01:13:05.380 | and intentions of our hearts.
01:13:06.340 | So you and I do not have the right
01:13:07.820 | to take certain parts of the Bible and say,
01:13:09.300 | I like this and I don't like this,
01:13:11.260 | 'cause you are no longer a worshiper of God.
01:13:13.980 | So every part of the Bible,
01:13:17.620 | if there's any part of the Bible,
01:13:18.940 | we just kind of say, you know what, this part,
01:13:20.780 | I don't like, this part I like.
01:13:22.780 | You are no longer following the God of the Bible.
01:13:25.180 | So one, it's important for us to dig and study
01:13:29.580 | and ask questions because it's in the Bible, all of it.
01:13:32.260 | Leviticus, book of Numbers, Revelation, Ezekiel,
01:13:35.460 | all of it, God has written for us for a reason.
01:13:38.220 | So if we're in a habit just doing quiet time through John,
01:13:43.340 | just understanding 1 John, the epistles,
01:13:45.880 | and stay away from these difficult passages,
01:13:48.620 | then there's huge chunks of why God said what he said
01:13:52.180 | that you're missing.
01:13:53.180 | Two, the Bible warns us not to be caught off guard.
01:13:58.180 | How much of Jesus' warning before he left
01:14:04.400 | was to remind us of about his second coming?
01:14:06.640 | He says to watch carefully.
01:14:09.580 | He says, do not be caught off guard,
01:14:12.300 | like the thief in the night.
01:14:14.120 | So when we're not paying attention, we're not digging,
01:14:16.000 | we don't understand what's going on,
01:14:18.140 | we naturally end up pursuing what we see,
01:14:21.780 | and sometimes even in the church.
01:14:25.220 | So that's why if you're not eagerly waiting and seeking
01:14:28.300 | to see what God is doing, we end up pursuing whatever,
01:14:32.880 | at that moment, that we're attracted to.
01:14:34.980 | So we travel, we save money, we do,
01:14:37.980 | and none of this stuff in and of itself is wrong.
01:14:40.640 | But if that's what characterizes your life,
01:14:45.260 | I guarantee you, you're not eagerly waiting for the Lord.
01:14:48.120 | And when he does come,
01:14:50.940 | he's not gonna be a welcome presence.
01:14:53.020 | If I told you that Jesus is coming tonight,
01:14:56.420 | your first reaction may be, not yet, not yet.
01:15:00.720 | Because your heart is not filled with him coming.
01:15:03.740 | You're not eagerly waiting for him.
01:15:05.860 | So you know what, wait a little bit,
01:15:07.780 | because I have a wedding coming up.
01:15:09.860 | Wait a little bit, 'cause I have this trip planned.
01:15:12.600 | Wait a little bit, because I just saved up
01:15:14.460 | just enough money to retire, and next year,
01:15:16.220 | I'm gonna be able to retire and do whatever I want.
01:15:17.940 | And so when you say, Jesus is coming tomorrow,
01:15:19.900 | your first reaction is, not yet, give me some more time.
01:15:22.620 | Let me enjoy what I was pursuing.
01:15:24.780 | But Jesus says not to be caught off guard,
01:15:28.700 | to watch the signs of the times,
01:15:31.220 | so that we would live with that in mind.
01:15:35.160 | That we're not playing tug of war with God
01:15:39.420 | to get him to submit to our plans and our will,
01:15:43.820 | but to see what God's doing, so that everything that we do
01:15:46.980 | is in line with what God's doing.
01:15:48.780 | But third and finally, why this is important,
01:15:52.540 | is because this is a revelation of God.
01:15:55.600 | This reveals God, that even after 1,000 years,
01:16:02.580 | he never forgot his covenant.
01:16:05.460 | Even after 2,000 years, the promise he made to Abraham,
01:16:09.260 | he says, I'm going to fulfill.
01:16:11.340 | Even after all the trouble, all the chaos, all the rebellion,
01:16:16.160 | even after all of that, he says, for my glory,
01:16:19.020 | for my own glory, I will fulfill this.
01:16:24.720 | What God says, he does.
01:16:27.220 | Our problem is, we see all of God's doing
01:16:31.620 | within the parameter that we give him.
01:16:34.080 | If God's gonna be faithful, he's be faithful today,
01:16:36.920 | tomorrow, or next year, or God's not faithful.
01:16:41.000 | But God has something much greater in mind.
01:16:43.600 | You and I cannot possibly begin to imagine how big God is
01:16:46.820 | and what he is doing.
01:16:48.200 | So this is a revelation of God.
01:16:51.460 | This is who he is.
01:16:54.460 | What he says, he does.
01:16:56.740 | Jesus said, there isn't an iota,
01:16:58.900 | there isn't a single tittle that will disappear
01:17:01.480 | until it is fulfilled.
01:17:03.620 | Everything that God has said,
01:17:06.140 | he is working actively to fulfill.
01:17:08.860 | It may not happen the way that you and I are imagining,
01:17:11.540 | but God is fulfilling that.
01:17:13.660 | It may not happen during our lifetime,
01:17:15.140 | but God is fulfilling that.
01:17:17.120 | You and I may not ever see that in our lifetime,
01:17:19.160 | but God is actively pursuing that.
01:17:21.960 | This is who God is.
01:17:23.460 | The question is, do you believe it?
01:17:28.180 | Do you believe it?
01:17:30.400 | Like many of the Israelites, after so many years have passed,
01:17:34.860 | maybe he's not gonna do it.
01:17:38.760 | So you're just kind of salvaging your faith.
01:17:40.960 | That passionate pursuit of Christ was years ago,
01:17:44.900 | but your life didn't quite turn out the way
01:17:47.940 | that you were hoping that if I invested
01:17:49.800 | and discipled and disciplined and evangelized and sacrificed
01:17:53.180 | that you thought certain things were gonna happen,
01:17:54.780 | and when that didn't happen,
01:17:56.680 | maybe God isn't going to do what I thought
01:17:59.540 | he was going to do.
01:18:00.440 | So like many of the Israelites,
01:18:03.500 | they just kind of gone and started to salvage what they had.
01:18:09.480 | Now I'm gonna make money.
01:18:11.480 | The Sadducees decided to use their political influence
01:18:15.160 | and gain money and control.
01:18:17.240 | The Essenes decided, you know,
01:18:18.280 | we're gonna just do our own thing,
01:18:19.160 | go into the cave and I don't care what's happening
01:18:21.080 | over there, we're just gonna do our own thing.
01:18:22.760 | The zealots says, you know what,
01:18:23.760 | if God's not gonna come, we're gonna do it.
01:18:25.200 | We're gonna bear arms and we're gonna fight this
01:18:27.440 | and we're gonna make this kingdom come.
01:18:29.440 | How often, after years and years and years,
01:18:36.000 | because we see God in a limited time frame
01:18:39.140 | of where you and I exist,
01:18:40.940 | so many people in the church are simply salvaging
01:18:45.340 | their faith, not recognizing the promise
01:18:49.780 | that God has made is irrevocable.
01:18:52.720 | It is irrevocable.
01:18:55.660 | God is just as fervently pursuing sinners
01:18:59.900 | as he did a thousand years ago.
01:19:03.100 | God is actively inviting as 2,000 years ago.
01:19:07.320 | God is just as concerned about this lost world
01:19:11.480 | as 3,000 years ago, 4,000 years ago,
01:19:15.200 | and 4,000 years from now.
01:19:17.640 | Let me conclude with this text and I hope
01:19:22.760 | that this would be the conclusion and application
01:19:27.260 | of our lives.
01:19:28.620 | Number 2319.
01:19:30.360 | God is not man that he should lie,
01:19:33.420 | nor a son of man that he should repent.
01:19:36.740 | Has he said and will he not do it?
01:19:39.680 | Or has he spoken and will he not make it good?
01:19:44.560 | This is the God that we serve, the God of the covenant.
01:19:50.700 | He is, he was, and he will be.
01:19:54.840 | Let's pray.
01:19:59.940 | Gracious Father, we pray that you would give us
01:20:02.060 | a greater vision of who you are.
01:20:03.740 | Help us, Lord God, to dig deep into your word
