Father, you are worthy of praise and glory and honor. Lord, you are the beginning and you are the end, the alpha and omega, and we praise you.

Lord, as we delve into your word in Genesis, where we learn about creation, where we learn of how you created all things for your good, that you made man in your own image. But Lord, we have sinned against you. Through reading of redemption history, we quickly learn that though we mean evil, you mean things for good, and that you have a redemptive plan in motion, ultimately in the coming of Christ and the future coming of Christ.

Lord, we want to, in present, join in the song where we could echo and sing, worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain and purchased for God with your blood, people from every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and you made them to be a kingdom and priest to our God, and they will reign upon the earth.

We thank you for giving Christ, giving your son for his death and resurrection. I pray, Lord, that we as a church would take in deep your word and give you worship in response to what we know about you. We thank you in Jesus' name. Man of sorrows. Man of sorrows, what a name for the Son of God.

Then after the worship, you're going to go and discuss the study questions that you have. And then at 8 o'clock, we come back, and then I will review those questions, go over the text. And then afterwards, around 30, 35, 40 minutes, you'll be back and have some time to discuss the application of that, okay?

So that's kind of like the format of the Wednesday Bible study for those of you who are new. And so we want to encourage you to try to make it as close to 7 o'clock as possible because the longer we linger, obviously, it's going to take longer to finish.

And as we kick off the Bible study of Genesis, help us to have a deeper understanding of what you've done in creation and how all of what you are doing now, Father God, is related to what we will learn.

We pray, Father, that you would help us to glean your heart, your will, your purpose through our study. So we pray for your blessing over our times. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. We pray. Amen. Okay. You can hear it now. Okay. All right. So as I've mentioned in the video that you probably watched, why we're studying the book of Genesis.

Genesis, if, as you're studying the Bible, if you dig far enough, let's say you have a question. Why did this happen? Where did this come from? How come you're saying this? If you keep digging and the more you study the Bible, the more you're going to realize how much of everything stems all the way back to Genesis.

And so right understanding of the Bible stems from Genesis. And if you look at a lot of the cults and bad theology about election, about predestination, about God's purpose in creation, about redemption, it's usually because they interpreted or they did something strange in Genesis. And you'll notice that. Okay.

So I might mention some of that as I come along as we're studying it and how a small tweak of how you understand, you know, like who are the descendants of Seth? Who are the descendants of Cain? Who are the descendants of Shem? And so much of these theology, like strange theologies come from adding meaning to certain things that are seen in Genesis.

Okay. So again, as we study, I might be able to mention some of that. But again, our purpose of the study is not to simply do that. But again, my point is just the importance of knowing what Genesis says, especially in the beginning part of it. We could probably take a whole class just on the first three chapters of Genesis, which we will not.

You know, so we're going to highlight the importance of it. We're not going to be able to get in as deep as probably maybe someday. Either we will do it or I encourage you to go in and really dig through the first three chapters because it will help you to understand the rest of the Bible.

Okay. Studying Genesis helps us to understand, as I said, as an overview, how were we created? And the reason why this is important is because, sorry, I can't read my own writing. I can't read it. I'm going to have to skip that one. I can't read my own writing.

Okay. How were we created? It's important. Okay. Why were we created? Why were we created? Okay. Why were we created? The creation mandate is in the first couple chapters, meaning this is the purpose of why we created them. So one of the biggest question is, where did we come from?

Why are we here? Well, Genesis answers that. Okay. So that's important. What went wrong? Now, we generally know that Adam and Eve sinned against God, but when we study carefully of what went wrong, this is a genesis of all sins come from this chapter, chapter two, right? And so you'll notice when you study throughout the whole scripture that so much of what the Bible talks about, it goes into elaborate details of what sin is.

But if you keep studying and digging and digging and digging, it goes all the way back to chapter two. And so many of the sins and temptations stem from this temptation. Okay. So again, we can spend a whole, probably a whole ten weeks just studying the first couple chapters, but it's that important.

So we're not going to be able to go in that deep, but hopefully we'll be able to mention it and cause you to be able to know what the issues are so that you'll be able to go in and maybe study it yourself. And then ultimately, how will this get fixed, right?

So we know about Israel. We know about the law. We know about the Gospels. But where did all this start? This was all of what we know from Genesis to Revelation was because God made this promise in Genesis chapter three. Okay. So why are there so many genealogies? Why is there a careful record?

Why does Matthew start with Jesus' genealogy back to Adam or Mary's back to Adam? Why are there genealogies to prove that who Jesus is? It's because the promise is being fulfilled through Christ, right? And so, so much of what happens in the New Testament, the Old Testament and redemptive history is traced back to the first three chapters.

Okay. And obviously what comes after that is a fulfillment of that, is the genesis of that. Genesis introduces the promise of Christ coming to save mankind. And again, as I mentioned, the seed of the woman, this is called the Proto-Evangelium. It's the first gospel because where Jesus, where after he gives the cursing that the seed of the woman is going to come and crush the head of the serpent.

And so everything else that happens in Genesis is how that is being fulfilled, right? So you'll see, you'll see genealogies. Why are there so many detailed genealogies in the Old Testament and even in the New Testament is because of this promise. So after Christ comes, fulfills this promise, the temple is destroyed.

No Jew after that is able to trace this genealogy back. Right? So the Jews were meticulous about keeping their genealogy. And again, because the genealogy is going to confirm the fulfillment of the promise. Okay? But now that Christ has come and gone, there's no need for that anymore. It's just to confirm like, am I of this tribe or that tribe?

But the main reason for the genealogies is because of the fulfillment of this promise. And then the offspring of Abraham is promised. Right? So in what line is it going to come? We'll probably talk about that in a little bit. Right? Abraham. So God starts with this large promise.

And then we get to chapter 12 and he tells us how this is going to be fulfilled through Abraham, through the Israelites. And then the tribes are established. And then the tribe of Judah. And then the rest of it is how God is fulfilling that promise through that line.

And then when Christ comes and he's from that line. Okay? So that's redemptive history in a nutshell. And then chapter 37 through 50 is where Joseph appears as a type of Christ. Right? And then through that line, how Christ is going to come or is going to be fulfilled.

So I'm giving you three broad outline because those are the three large sections that we're going to tackle. So this section. No, this isn't it. The next one. Okay? So this is how it's going to be. We're going to break it down. So we're going to have three sessions of the study of Genesis.

So this session is going to be from chapter 1 through 11. And then chapter 12 to 36 is from Abraham to Jacob. Okay? And then chapter 37 to 50 will be the last session that we'll go through. Basically it's the line of Joseph until the end of Genesis. Okay?

So that's how the three sessions are going to be broken down. Okay. So before I get into the large outline, let me see how much of the outline that you remember. Okay? So give me a broad. You can just kind of yell it out. Right? So I want you to review.

I want you to be able to know in the 11 chapters exactly what's happening. You don't know the, have to know all the details, but to be able to say what's happening in chapter 8, what's happening in chapter 5. Okay? So what's, let's take the first three chapters. Okay?

What's in chapter 1? Hopefully you know that. Huh? You sure? In the beginning. Right? It's the creation order. A creation mandate. Why did he create? Six days. Seventh day God rested. And then we get to chapter 2. What happens to chapter 2? You got lost already? Okay. Chapter 2.

What happens to chapter 2? What happens to chapter 2? You got lost already? Okay. Chapter 2. What happens to chapter 2? Okay. Temptation comes in. Right? Man and woman is created and then at the end of that temptation comes in. Chapter 3 is the fall. Right? And then the curse that comes as a result of the fall.

Right? And then the curse that comes as a result of the fall. Right? And what happens to chapter 4? Louder. I can't hear. Cain and evil. Cain and evil. Cain and evil. Cain and evil. Okay. So the result. Right? The result of that is the first sin that's created after.

Right? There's murder that happens in that line. So sin has entered into mankind. Right? So it didn't stop with Adam and Eve. You start to see the sin coming. So the very first sin after what they did in chapter 4 is murder. Right? Taking of a life. And then what happens after that?

Cain and evil. Cain and evil. Okay. So the result, right? The result of that is the first sin that's created after. Right? There's murder that happens in that line. So sin has entered into mankind. Right? So it didn't stop with Adam and Eve. You start to see the sin coming.

So the very first sin after what they did in chapter 4 is murder. Right? Taking of a life. And then what happens after that? Don't look at your Bible. Don't cheat. Adam to Noah. Adam to Noah. The genealogy. So what's the significance of the genealogy? I don't know if you got that far in yet.

But if you read it, I hope you may have noticed something. And why is there a record of how long they lived? Everyone dies. Everyone dies. Yep. One. Everyone dies. Oh, good. Okay. It's not complete. There's one or two that doesn't, that don't fit. But for the most part, you see that the age is getting shorter and shorter and shorter.

Right? The older ones were the ones in the beginning. And then the ones that come at the end, the lifespan is a little bit shorter. And then obviously as it goes, it gets shorter and shorter. Okay? So basically it's chronicling what sin is doing to mankind. Right? And that genealogy shows us how it's affecting not just the spiritual, but even the physical.

Okay? Then what happens after that? Chapter six. What's in the beginning of chapter six? I can't decipher the mumbling. What is that? Huh? Sorry, my hearing is not good. The hearing is not good. You have to make it. Then what? How does men know it's still to God? Yes.

But prior to that. Wickedness. Wickedness of man. So how wickedness of men, right? The sons of God marry the daughters of men. Right? And then that's a period of the Nephilim. And so you see the number of wickedness is growing. So we may or may not tackle that because that's not a 30 minute session.

Right? I did a whole semester just on that topic when I was in seminary. Because the professor gave me a topic to choose and I was interested in who these people are. Anyway, I may or may not get into that. Okay? Because it's not a five minute session on that.

But I'll mention it when I get there. Okay? So after that. Right? The sin is increasing. God becomes angry with mankind. Right? He grieves over their sins. And then he decides to judge the earth. Right? Chapter six. So what happens in chapter six, seven, eight? Okay. The flood comes.

Right? The flood comes. So that whole section is going to be there. We're not going to cover it in one session. We're going to do like each chapter and there's emphasis on each one. And then so what happens after that? Chapter nine. Covenant with Noah. Right? And then there's three sons.

They begin to repopulate the earth. And who are the three sons? Ham, Sham, and Japheth. So who's the one who gets into trouble? Ham. Ham. Right? He sees his father drunken and naked. And instead of covering him, he comes out and he's laughing. And then so as a result, he gets judged.

Right? So the reason why these three are significant is because all mankind is traced with these three. Does anybody know how they're traced? So Ham's the one that's judged. And who are the descendants of Ham? Anybody know this? Huh? Canaanites. Canaanites. The Egyptians. I'm not sure if the Egyptians.

Ethiopians. So basically the descendants of Ham are African in that area. Okay? And then you have Shem. Do you know who he is? Who his descendants are? Abraham. Yes. Abraham's descendants come from that. The Middle Easterners. Okay? They come from that group. So I think Egypt comes into that group.

Okay? I think. And then you have Ham are African in that area. Okay? And then you have Shem. Do you know who his descendants are? Yes. Abraham's descendants come from that? The Middle Easterners. Okay? They come from that group. So I think Egypt comes into that group. Okay? I think.

And then you have Ham. So there's only two left. So the Europeans and the Asians supposedly come from that line. Okay? So the reason why those three people are important is because if you trace it back, all of mankind comes to those three people. Okay? And then what happens after that?

Okay. Chapter 11. The Tower of Babel. So basically the sin repeats itself. Right? So it goes from Adam and Eve's sin. There's murder. The numbers begin to grow. God becomes angry. Right? Judgment comes. Right? And they repopulate. But when he judges, he makes a promise that he's not going to judge the world through that again.

But as soon as that happens, Ham and Jeff, sin happens. Right? Soon as the covenant is made, sin comes in. And then you see the result of that. And then as their descendants grow, in chapter 10, they sin again. Right? So this is a, again, so chapter 1 through 11 is showing us the pattern of sin.

This is like a desperate situation of mankind until chapter 12 comes when God says that this is going to be his plan to save mankind. And then he begins to, we begin to see a more direct line for the coming of Christ. Okay? So that's why the chapter, first 11 chapters is important because first 11 chapters is the general history of mankind and then chapter 12 and on is a specific history of Abraham.

Okay? So that's kind of like a broad overview. Major themes here. God as creator, obviously. Man's creation mandate. Right? Why did God create us? Sin as its consequence. Satanic work in challenging God's creation. This is something that typically you kind of hear in the charismatic circle, but satanic work is constant.

Just as there's a redemptive history. In fact, I mentioned this before, but Dr. Harris in his book, Darkness and the Glory, there's a chapter in there where he chronicles the Antichrist work. So we think of Antichrist as at the book of Revelation, but he chronicles the Antichrist work all through redemptive history.

Right? So we're not going to cover all of that, but the Genesis of that is also here in Genesis. Okay? Ramification of sin in the history of mankind. How it's affecting family, relationship, nations. God's plan of redemption through the seed of the woman. Foreshadowing of God's judgment of mankind through the flood.

God's plan of redemption through Abraham and the nation of Israel. Israel. Okay? Because that's where we're going to stop. Okay? I'm not going to go over the details of the outline, but this is the outline that we're going to be using for the next 10 weeks. Today's the introduction.

This is going to be sent out to you so you don't have to record it. Okay? But next week we're going to be covering from chapter 1 to chapter 2 verse 3. Mainly about God's creation. Okay? And then we're just going to follow this until we get to chapter 10.

Okay? So this session is 10 weeks in case you didn't know. Okay? Again, this is going to be emailed to you so you don't have to, you don't have to jot down everything. All right. So this is for next week. So today we're going to be a little bit, cut it a little bit shorter.

All right. So, again, this is going to be sent to you from now on whenever we do Bible study because, especially in this area, I want to try to give you some direction. And when we get to the larger narratives, obviously the questions aren't going to be as detailed as this.

I'm just going to kind of guide you to make sure that you are hitting the main points that are happening. But like I said, the first three chapters of Genesis, we could probably spend the next 10 weeks just going through details. Right? Every word counts. Every order counts. So let me just go over quickly some of the things that you need to pay attention to as you are studying chapter one for next week.

What does it mean in verse two, when it says the earth was formless and void? When was the earth formless and void? Okay. If you don't understand the question, you probably have to look at the text, right? When does first day begin and when does it say it was formless and void?

Okay. So just whether you can answer it or not, at least know what the questions are. Number two, make a detailed list of what was created on each day of creation, right? And I know sometimes the language is a little bit hard to follow, but do your best to kind of separate the days and exactly in what sequence did God do what?

Okay? That you're going to see the word water mentioned multiple times, but the water that's mentioned in different days are not the same water. water, right? So pay attention to that. So make sure you make a sequence of each of the days and when the certain words are repeated, you don't just assume it's the same description, right?

Water in one verse is not referring to the same thing in another verse. Okay? Okay? And that's also true of the word day. Okay? Like, is it a 24-hour day? I want you to look carefully. Not all the words for day is in reference to 24 hours. So I want you to take a look at it, right?

So when the, it's the same Hebrew word. But look at the, look at it in the context carefully. Okay? Is it going over your head? That's not here. So I'm just giving you a hint. Okay? Take note of the repeated phrases in this chapter. There's a lot of repeated phrases.

Okay? Take note of it. And don't just assume because it's repeated it's the same thing. Always understand it within the context. What do these repeated phrases teach us about who, what, why, when of creation account? Okay? And then, how is the creation structured in terms of days one to three and four to six?

So see if you can catch that. What is the distinction? What is different between the way these two sections are described? Okay? What does it mean when God says it is good? Is it good aesthetically, morally, spiritually, or all of the above? What does He mean by that? Don't just assume and say, oh good, what I think good means.

Right? What do you think He meant? Why did He say it is good? What is the reasoning behind that? What is unique about creation of humanity compared to the rest of creation? In what ways are humans like animals and in what ways are they different as it is described in this chapter?

So don't, you know, don't make up stuff. Right? What do you notice in the way that they're described? In animals described or human beings described that is distinct? And what are some things that it says that is similar? Okay? How does the text describe God's act of resting on the seventh day?

What is emphasized about the seventh day compared to the others? Is the seventh day like the other six days? Right? That's one of the questions I have. Look at the word day and how it is used. Right? And what does the creation account teach us about God's nature? So I know it's a lot, but again, the other chapters aren't going to be as dense as the first three chapters are going to be dense, especially the chapter one is going to be dense.

So if you get a good grasp of chapter one, you will benefit for a long time. If you don't do your due diligence in chapter one, you're going to keep coming back and asking the same question over and over. Okay? So even if you don't get the answer, at least know what the questions are.

Right? What are the theologians debating about and for what? Okay? All right. So this is homework for next week. So every week isn't going to be this detailed, but again, chapter one, two, and then three, there's going to be a little bit more homework. Okay? All right. So that's all I have for today.

And for the rest of the time, how does a biblical understanding of creation affect the way we view God, ourselves, and the world? Why is this study of Genesis? Again, we believe we should take this literally. It's not allegorical that this is a literal creation account that we are to take.

And so how does it affect us? How does knowing where you came from help you to understand who you are and where you are headed? So hopefully that makes sense. And then the next three is what are you hoping to get most out of the study of Genesis? And hopefully if you are on a table that you don't know each other that well, take some time to get to know each other.

Share your testimonies and take the rest of the time to pray. How can your small group maximize your time in the next ten weeks to help study and apply what you are learning in this study? And take some time to pray for one another. So again, the last three is just to, as you guys study, if some of you guys are going to be done earlier than others, and those of you who may have more time, if you are not familiar with the people in your group, maybe take this time to get to know each other and pray for each other before you end.

Okay? Let me pray for us and then we'll finish. Father, we thank you for this day. We thank you for all our brothers and sisters that you've gathered here together. But as we commit ourselves for the next ten weeks to understand what you have done in creation, in the fall of man and how you have shown mercy, Lord God, in making a covenant with us.

And we pray, Father, that a deeper understanding of the beginning will help us, Lord, to deepen understanding of who you are now and where we are headed. And so we pray that you will bless this time of discussion. I pray that the small group time and the home group time will be a fruitful time, Lord God, that at the end of this, that we would gain more than just knowledge, but a deeper sense of who you are and a greater sense of love for one another.
