00:30:02.480 | go through a process of metamorphosis in their life cycles.
00:30:07.040 | And metamorphosis is especially common in insects,
00:30:11.720 | and insects generally undergo two types of metamorphosis,
00:30:16.080 | incomplete metamorphosis and complete metamorphosis.
00:30:20.560 | So grasshoppers, dragonflies, and cockroaches
00:30:24.440 | have what scientists would call
00:30:26.520 | an incomplete or partial metamorphosis,
00:30:30.320 | where the young just look like
00:30:32.800 | wingless miniature versions of the adults.
00:30:35.240 | But insects like butterflies and moths
00:30:38.120 | undergo a complete metamorphosis,
00:30:40.520 | where the young not only look entirely different
00:30:43.520 | from the adults, but they consume completely different foods
00:30:48.320 | and exhibit completely different behaviors.
00:30:50.920 | And we've all learned about this.
00:30:54.480 | A butterfly starts as an egg,
00:30:56.060 | then eats voraciously as a caterpillar,
00:30:58.720 | becomes a chrysalis, and then matures
00:31:01.040 | into a beautifully shaped winged creature.
00:31:04.280 | The life cycle of a butterfly is very textbook stuff.
00:31:08.840 | It's pretty standard, and this has been observed,
00:31:13.160 | confirmed, and factualized
00:31:15.560 | that the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly,
00:31:20.800 | it's an expected outcome.
00:31:22.360 | So we would all be shocked if out of a chrysalis
00:31:27.880 | came a fatter version of the caterpillar.
00:31:29.960 | So this transformation is radical,
00:31:34.480 | and it is unalterable.
00:31:38.040 | And metamorphosis, by definition,
00:31:40.840 | is a change of the form or nature of a creature
00:31:43.800 | into a completely different one.
00:31:45.400 | The Bible teaches us that when a person
00:31:50.140 | who had once been spiritually dead believes upon Christ,
00:31:54.600 | there is a spiritual metamorphosis.
00:31:56.920 | The Christian metamorphosis, too,
00:32:00.840 | can be spiritually observed and confirmed.
00:32:03.540 | The complete transformation of the Christian,
00:32:07.560 | likewise, is miraculous, it's mysterious and radical,
00:32:12.560 | and this also is unalterable, this also is irreversible.
00:32:17.560 | And this transformation, in the same way, is also textbook.
00:32:23.280 | And the metamorphosis of the Christian
00:32:26.600 | is spelled out explicitly in the Bible.
00:32:29.120 | Second Corinthians 5.17 reads,
00:32:31.880 | "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature."
00:32:37.600 | The old things passed away, behold, new things have come.
00:32:42.600 | So among insects, the metamorphosis can be incomplete,
00:32:47.880 | where the young simply look like wingless,
00:32:50.000 | tiny versions of the adults.
00:32:52.200 | But in Christians, the metamorphosis,
00:32:55.240 | the radical transformation, is always complete.
00:32:59.880 | It is always total, it is always all-encompassing.
00:33:06.680 | The old things are gone, the new things have come.
00:33:10.320 | Hearts of stone have been completely replaced
00:33:13.680 | with tender hearts of flesh.
00:33:15.400 | The satanic has been replaced by the godly.
00:33:19.420 | And those who once were spiritual corpses
00:33:24.240 | change and become living vessels
00:33:26.740 | filled with the very spirit of God,
00:33:29.280 | and walk in newness alive.
00:33:31.720 | So a Christian, by definition, is a new creation,
00:33:36.160 | radically, totally, and irreversibly changed.
00:33:40.560 | There is no such thing as a partial Christian salvation.
00:33:45.660 | Again, this is textbook stuff.
00:33:49.560 | The old has gone, the new has come.
00:33:53.760 | And the Christian's legal standing
00:33:55.460 | before the judgment of God has been instantaneously changed,
00:33:58.600 | and that is what we call justification.
00:34:01.420 | And though the outward, perceivable change
00:34:05.400 | may not be immediately noticeable,
00:34:08.840 | the very DNA of the Christian
00:34:11.000 | is also completely and instantaneously changed upon belief.
00:34:16.000 | That is what we call regeneration.
00:34:20.060 | And it's only a matter of time
00:34:23.760 | that the DNA starts to produce its results.
00:34:28.760 | The passage that I read for you in the beginning,
00:34:30.800 | Galatians 2, 19 to 21,
00:34:33.080 | that's our main text for the morning.
00:34:34.920 | It's a very well-known and very well-memorized passage.
00:34:39.520 | It is a passage we all inductively studied together
00:34:43.240 | back in November.
00:34:44.400 | And we're gonna reflect on this today,
00:34:47.460 | and hopefully it wets our appetites
00:34:49.740 | for part two of Galatians,
00:34:51.060 | which begins in about a week and a half.
00:34:53.680 | So I wanna take a moment to read
00:34:55.000 | these three verses again for us.
00:34:56.960 | Galatians 2, 19 to 21.
00:34:58.960 | For through the law I die to the law,
00:35:01.520 | so that I might live to God.
00:35:04.280 | I have been crucified with Christ,
00:35:06.640 | and it is no longer I who live,
00:35:09.240 | but Christ lives in me.
00:35:11.060 | And the life which I now live in the flesh,
00:35:13.140 | I live by faith in the Son of God,
00:35:14.920 | who loved me and gave himself up for me.
00:35:17.640 | I do not nullify the grace of God,
00:35:20.000 | for if righteousness comes through the law,
00:35:23.160 | then Christ died needlessly.
00:35:25.680 | So in these three verses,
00:35:28.360 | the Apostle Paul gives us a snapshot
00:35:31.440 | of the stages of the Christian's metamorphosis.
00:35:34.160 | And we're gonna be looking at this snapshot today.
00:35:38.420 | I'm gonna walk you through these three verses
00:35:41.000 | to explain first why we have been transformed,
00:35:44.760 | so the purpose of our transformation.
00:35:46.600 | And then I'll be describing the means
00:35:49.920 | and the process involved in this transformation.
00:35:52.760 | And then I'll launch off of verse 21
00:35:56.360 | and the overall context of Galatians,
00:35:59.780 | and I'll detail for you what is inferred of the end result,
00:36:04.020 | the end product of our transformation.
00:36:07.040 | Okay, so the purpose of the transformation,
00:36:09.840 | chapter two, verse 19.
00:36:11.340 | The process of the transformation, 20 and 21.
00:36:15.880 | And then the product of the transformation, verse 21.
00:36:21.800 | So I wanna look at Galatians 2, 19 again,
00:36:24.040 | and it reads, "For through the law I died to the law,
00:36:30.040 | "so that I might live to God."
00:36:33.000 | So before we look at the purpose
00:36:34.700 | behind God's transformation of a person,
00:36:37.420 | we need to take a moment to examine
00:36:39.860 | why God had created man to begin with.
00:36:42.060 | Through every cursory reading of the scriptures,
00:36:46.540 | we can easily conclude that you and I have been created
00:36:51.320 | by God and for God to love God and to serve God.
00:36:58.180 | God does not exist for man's happiness or fulfillment.
00:37:02.500 | Man exists for God and not the other way around.
00:37:07.120 | Man was created by God and for God's glory.
00:37:12.600 | And this God, our creator, he is holy.
00:37:16.780 | And to give holy service to God was the original purpose
00:37:22.100 | for which all things have been created.
00:37:25.540 | And all things in this creation
00:37:27.860 | were initially deemed very good.
00:37:30.380 | But we also see through the scriptures
00:37:33.480 | that sin entered the world
00:37:34.820 | and caused every human being born after the fall
00:37:38.660 | to rebel against that purpose
00:37:41.400 | and to commit what R.C. Sproul calls cosmic treason.
00:37:45.160 | So the fallen and natural man
00:37:49.180 | in his fallen and natural condition
00:37:52.220 | is born with a delusional and twisted sense
00:37:55.300 | of entitlement.
00:37:56.300 | And the scripture describes fallen and natural man
00:38:02.180 | as simply an unreasoning creature of instinct
00:38:06.180 | who is blind to sins that separate him from God.
00:38:09.940 | He's a fool.
00:38:12.460 | He is a lover of the temporal.
00:38:16.020 | He is a lover of pleasure.
00:38:18.940 | He is worldly.
00:38:21.780 | He is self-centered.
00:38:25.420 | And he is self-exalting.
00:38:27.160 | And the natural and fallen man is completely oblivious
00:38:33.700 | to the purpose for which he has been created.
00:38:35.940 | The Christian, on the other hand,
00:38:39.480 | is one who has had his eyes opened
00:38:42.460 | to the truth of this rebellion,
00:38:44.300 | his utter depravity,
00:38:47.520 | to his inability to draw near by himself to holy God.
00:38:53.540 | So the beginning of Galatians 2.19 reads,
00:38:55.860 | for through the law, I die to the law,
00:38:59.780 | and we see through the context of Galatians
00:39:02.580 | that that simply means that the Christian
00:39:05.620 | has rejected the notion that he can satisfy
00:39:09.300 | the requirements of God's holy law in and of himself.
00:39:13.180 | So the Christian is one who, by grace,
00:39:18.160 | has come to the realization
00:39:19.540 | that he cannot be reconciled to God
00:39:22.500 | by his own strength or by his own effort.
00:39:26.680 | The Christian is one who has come to understand
00:39:30.060 | that the law and upright living cannot save him,
00:39:35.060 | and that the holy law of God only condemns him.
00:39:40.500 | This Christian is saved by grace alone,
00:39:44.060 | through faith alone, by the sacrifice of Christ alone,
00:39:47.060 | and in that moment of belief,
00:39:50.500 | he is instantly transformed.
00:39:52.720 | And the transformed Christian is one who understands
00:39:58.380 | that the primary purpose in his being saved and transformed
00:40:03.380 | is that he might now be restored to his original purpose.
00:40:08.040 | He has been created by God and for God
00:40:13.320 | to love God and to serve God,
00:40:16.620 | and now he can, and now he must fulfill that purpose.
00:40:21.620 | So the Christian has a zeal for this purpose,
00:40:28.180 | and the fulfillment of his purpose
00:40:30.980 | is now wired into his very DNA.
00:40:33.780 | He lives to God with a passion and a fervor,
00:40:38.800 | not in order to be saved, but because he is saved.
00:40:45.340 | So Galatians 2:19, "For through the law,
00:40:48.860 | "I die to the law, hinnah, so that I might live to God."
00:40:53.860 | And we covered this before in Bible study,
00:40:57.580 | but the Greek word hinnah is a very important word
00:41:00.940 | in the scriptures.
00:41:02.820 | It is a conjunction word,
00:41:04.500 | translated as in order that or so that.
00:41:07.740 | And it always denotes the reason
00:41:11.500 | or the purpose for something.
00:41:14.420 | The word hinnah or so that always describes
00:41:18.540 | the desired outcome or expectation
00:41:21.440 | to what has just previously been said.
00:41:24.700 | So there is a purpose to a Christian's change
00:41:28.140 | in standing and in nature.
00:41:31.380 | And it reads, "For through the law, I die to the law,
00:41:34.460 | "why, hinnah, I might live to God."
00:41:37.220 | And it's important to pause here and to think deeply
00:41:42.740 | and honestly about a few questions.
00:41:45.000 | Does your life more closely resemble
00:41:52.700 | that of the self-centered, self-exalting,
00:41:58.020 | worldly and fallen man?
00:41:59.660 | Or more of that of the man who now understands
00:42:05.780 | that the purpose for which he has been created
00:42:08.080 | and the purpose for which he has been saved
00:42:12.300 | and remember the old is gone and the new has come.
00:42:16.640 | Complete transformation.
00:42:19.360 | And as a reminder this morning,
00:42:22.600 | I wanna tell you that we were not saved
00:42:28.980 | simply to escape hell.
00:42:30.440 | Amen?
00:42:33.780 | We were not saved so that we can simply be more moral,
00:42:40.700 | that we can access God's favor and protection in this life,
00:42:45.140 | that we can have this eternal insurance policy
00:42:50.460 | or that we can just make the world
00:42:52.040 | a better place through Jesus.
00:42:53.660 | That's not what we were saved for.
00:42:55.360 | The primary purpose of our lives,
00:42:59.400 | our very creation, our redemption,
00:43:04.500 | and our transformation is hinnah
00:43:09.920 | so that we might live to God.
00:43:13.420 | We are not our own.
00:43:16.860 | We were bought at a price, as it says in 1 Corinthians 6,
00:43:21.300 | and therefore we are to honor God with our lives
00:43:24.060 | and this is the primary purpose of our transformation.
00:43:28.740 | Again, that we might live to God and live fully to God.
00:43:33.740 | As the Westminster Catechism states,
00:43:37.580 | the chief end of man is to glorify God
00:43:40.220 | and to enjoy him forever.
00:43:42.580 | And that forever has already started for the Christian.
00:43:48.600 | So what does that tangibly mean then for the here and now
00:43:54.820 | while we are kind of in this limbo stage?
00:43:57.580 | Let me read Galatians 2, 20 to 21 for you
00:44:02.100 | and this will bring us to our second point,
00:44:04.820 | the process of our transformation.
00:44:07.820 | I have been crucified with Christ
00:44:10.840 | and it is no longer I who live,
00:44:13.420 | but Christ lives in me
00:44:15.780 | and the life which I now live in the flesh,
00:44:17.860 | I live by faith in the Son of God
00:44:20.420 | who loved me and gave himself up for me.
00:44:23.220 | I do not nullify the grace of God.
00:44:26.180 | And the rest of the verse I'll read at the end, okay?
00:44:31.280 | So by the grace of God,
00:44:34.500 | we have seen our desperate need for a savior
00:44:38.060 | and we have cleaved ourselves to Christ
00:44:40.620 | by believing in his name, Acts 4, 12.
00:44:43.160 | And because of belief,
00:44:46.580 | we are now in right standing before God.
00:44:49.500 | Only by belief, amen?
00:44:54.080 | And this is the beginning point
00:44:57.420 | of the transformation process
00:44:58.900 | and it's called justification.
00:45:02.420 | And we know from Romans 8, chapter eight, verse 30,
00:45:05.880 | that those who have been justified
00:45:08.580 | will one day be glorified.
00:45:10.820 | So if you have put your faith in Christ,
00:45:13.700 | you will be glorified.
00:45:16.340 | And this glorification is the final part
00:45:20.980 | of the Christian life cycle.
00:45:22.660 | So broadly put, okay,
00:45:26.660 | from where we are conscious of the changes,
00:45:29.380 | our transformation,
00:45:32.020 | it begins at justification
00:45:34.820 | and it will end with glory, okay?
00:45:38.180 | From where we can perceive the life cycle of the Christian
00:45:42.500 | starts from where we are justified
00:45:45.260 | and ends when we are glorified.
00:45:47.500 | So glorification is what awaits us
00:45:52.040 | in the resurrection and what awaits us in eternity.
00:45:54.580 | This is textbook.
00:46:00.180 | It is mysterious, it is radical,
00:46:04.140 | but at present, you and I who have put our faith in Christ
00:46:09.140 | are in this cocoon-like middle stage
00:46:13.100 | waiting for the final transformation.
00:46:14.940 | And it's an awkward, already but not yet stage.
00:46:21.020 | It's like an engagement period between a man and a woman.
00:46:24.920 | You're kind of one, but you're not.
00:46:30.260 | You've been spoken for and taken, but not fully.
00:46:35.160 | So this in-between stage,
00:46:38.060 | even though it serves an important purpose, right?
00:46:40.900 | The invites need to go out, right?
00:46:43.340 | There are other sheep who are not yet of the fold.
00:46:46.280 | This in-between stage still is a very awkward
00:46:50.620 | and sometimes confusing one
00:46:52.700 | and it is often a very, very painful one.
00:46:57.220 | And on occasion, we may be left wondering
00:46:59.340 | if we indeed have been changed at all
00:47:01.740 | because there is so much old self still remaining.
00:47:06.840 | Many years ago, I had heard that most lizards,
00:47:12.260 | there's a lot of animal talk today, okay?
00:47:13.940 | I had heard that most lizards can self-amputate their tails
00:47:18.940 | to distract predators and to escape.
00:47:21.620 | You guys know this, right?
00:47:23.100 | They go, tail breaks off and then they run, okay?
00:47:27.260 | So I remembered this fact
00:47:28.820 | when I was camping with my friend as a young teenager.
00:47:32.260 | And on day one, the morning,
00:47:35.020 | the first morning of the camping trip,
00:47:37.220 | I noticed a lizard chilling on a rock.
00:47:40.180 | He was basking in the sun.
00:47:42.660 | And purely on the interest of science,
00:47:44.540 | not because I'm cruel, okay?
00:47:46.300 | I kicked the lizard.
00:47:48.260 | I was a lot more agile back then, so I kicked the lizard.
00:47:52.600 | And I wanted to see for myself
00:47:55.420 | whether or not the tail would indeed snap off.
00:47:58.540 | And it did.
00:47:59.620 | Hey, don't judge me, all right?
00:48:01.820 | And this three-inch severed piece of tail
00:48:05.620 | thrashed and flailed for several minutes.
00:48:09.580 | So moments before I kicked it, in the interest of science,
00:48:13.700 | the tail was dormant,
00:48:15.660 | even though it was connected to the lizard.
00:48:18.020 | But interestingly enough,
00:48:21.220 | upon its detachment from its life source,
00:48:25.380 | it thrashed, it flailed,
00:48:29.140 | and it took on a life of its own, literally.
00:48:33.020 | That tail was dead.
00:48:35.500 | It was cut off from its source of life,
00:48:37.340 | but it was still dying.

00:50:55.060 | in Galatians 2.20, okay?

00:51:00.140 | Hopefully you catch this, okay?
00:51:04.060 | I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live.
00:51:11.900 | The verb susterao, I have been crucified,
00:51:16.580 | is significant for two reasons.
00:51:19.620 | It's in the present perfect tense,
00:51:23.500 | and it is a passive verb.
00:51:26.300 | Why is that significant?
00:51:28.660 | The present perfect tense is used for past actions
00:51:34.300 | that are related to or continue on in the present.
00:51:39.580 | So we are still crucified with Christ.
00:51:42.860 | It is ongoing.
00:51:45.180 | Make sense?
00:51:47.060 | Secondly, it's in the passive.
00:51:50.500 | This is something that was done to us
00:51:56.220 | and is continuing to be done to us.
00:51:59.700 | So just as no one can physically crucify himself,
00:52:04.980 | if I were to ask you,
00:52:08.060 | "Can you crucify yourself to a cross?"
00:52:10.020 | You couldn't.

00:52:12.860 | Just as no one can physically crucify himself,
00:52:18.220 | neither can we spiritually crucify ourselves with Christ.
00:52:22.740 | Our past and ongoing crucifixion, our sanctification,

00:52:32.580 | and it is ongoing because it is God's will

00:53:03.340 | Secondly, sanctification is a prerequisite
