00:40:49.460 | to worship God in religiousness.
00:40:52.440 | The Bible says that God speaks
00:40:55.140 | not only through the mouth of men,
00:40:57.000 | but through the Holy Spirit.
00:40:59.340 | So when there was a 400 years of silence,
00:41:02.460 | it wasn't because they didn't have access
00:41:04.140 | to the word of God.
00:41:04.980 | It was God himself was not speaking.
00:41:07.380 | And so when John the Baptist came,
00:41:10.620 | he said, "God was speaking through this man."
00:41:13.240 | And so what John was able to do
00:41:16.540 | is garner a lot of attention.
00:41:18.420 | People were coming, something's happening.
00:41:19.940 | God is stirring up.
00:41:21.040 | All of a sudden there's, he's speaking like everybody else,
00:41:24.020 | humanly speaking,
00:41:24.940 | but there's something different about him.
00:41:26.960 | They knew that there was an anointing on him
00:41:28.940 | that they haven't seen for hundreds of years.
00:41:31.700 | But what he says about John the Baptist, about Jesus,
00:41:37.580 | is a distinction between life and death.
00:41:40.140 | It's a distinction between coming to church all your life
00:41:44.180 | and knowing and understanding
00:41:46.360 | and practicing a form of godliness without any power.
00:41:50.900 | John the Baptist, his baptism didn't save anybody.
00:41:54.720 | It had no power to deliver you from sin.
00:41:57.560 | It just brought attention to sin,
00:41:59.820 | to cause you to be aware of sin,
00:42:02.780 | just like the law, it came to make sin utterly sinful.
00:42:06.400 | So when he says, "I baptize you with water.
00:42:09.260 | "I can go through ceremonial cleansing,
00:42:12.220 | "but the real power is coming in Christ
00:42:14.300 | "when he baptize you in the Holy Spirit."
00:42:19.220 | I believe that you and I are living in a generation
00:42:24.020 | where we need to be on our knees
00:42:25.900 | desperately praying for revival
00:42:27.860 | because we live in a post-Christian culture
00:42:31.180 | where there is a lot of religiousness.
00:42:33.840 | We have conferences.
00:42:36.980 | We have different translations of the Bible.
00:42:39.460 | If you don't like this church,
00:42:40.500 | you can jump to the next church down the street.
00:42:42.800 | If you don't wanna go to missions here,
00:42:44.100 | you can go to the missions to another country.
00:42:46.900 | I mean, you and I have so much option.
00:42:48.740 | The concern that we have
00:42:50.340 | and the questions that we need to answer is which one?
00:42:52.760 | Out of the abundance of opportunities that we have,
00:42:56.840 | which one am I gonna choose?
00:42:58.320 | So it naturally causes us to become consumers.
00:43:02.420 | Which translation's the best?
00:43:03.760 | Which pastor do I like the most?
00:43:05.320 | I can wake up in the middle of the night
00:43:06.700 | and choose to listen to a sermon or not listen,
00:43:09.440 | and as a result of that,
00:43:12.220 | we have become experts in religiousness.
00:43:16.100 | But we also need to, I believe,
00:43:19.980 | admit that there's very little power.
00:43:22.700 | Every once in a while,
00:43:24.900 | we travel to remotest parts of the world,
00:43:28.060 | and we're gonna head back to India,
00:43:30.300 | and so little opportunities, so little finance,
00:43:35.180 | so little training, and yet their ministry is so powerful.
00:43:39.040 | Men who, some of them are illiterate.
00:43:43.620 | They're literally learning the Bible through pictures.
00:43:46.320 | Most of them have never gone to seminaries.
00:43:50.180 | They're not properly funded.
00:43:51.620 | Many of them who end up going to villages for a week's end
00:43:55.500 | have to leave their work to go.
00:43:56.980 | That means they're not getting paid.
00:43:59.380 | Were they getting paid a dollar a day
00:44:01.000 | to take care of their family,
00:44:02.100 | and they have to forfeit that in order to go evangelism,
00:44:04.140 | and yet they go.
00:44:05.100 | People who have so little access to what we have,
00:44:10.140 | why is there so much power in their ministry?
00:44:13.940 | Leonard Ravenhill, he says this about revival.
00:44:18.940 | As long as we are content to live without revival, we will.
00:44:23.720 | If this is satisfactory, then this is what you will have.
00:44:30.540 | If you look at the spiritual condition of where we're at,
00:44:35.080 | where you're at, where we've been,
00:44:37.280 | then that's where we will be.
00:44:39.620 | That's what our children will inherit.
00:44:43.640 | J.I. Packer says this about revival.
00:44:45.800 | Revival is the visitation of God,
00:44:47.560 | which brings to life Christians who have been sleeping,
00:44:50.640 | and restores a deep sense of God's
00:44:53.240 | near presence and holiness.
00:44:55.640 | Where he takes just mundane things,
00:45:00.160 | and when God shows up, and his presence becomes real,
00:45:04.040 | all of a sudden, sleeping Christians wake up,
00:45:07.280 | and you begin to see the power of God.
00:45:11.740 | Last week, we talked about how Jesus' baptism
00:45:14.400 | is a baptism of the Holy Spirit,
00:45:15.880 | and we said the baptism of the Holy Spirit
00:45:18.480 | is what you and I depend on to be able to live out our faith.
00:45:22.240 | It is not just strong emotions.
00:45:23.880 | It's not just tears in worship.
00:45:27.100 | It's not just some strange, miraculous spiritual sensation.
00:45:30.840 | He said it is the power behind what God has called us to do.
00:45:35.840 | So after the training, before he sends out the disciples,
00:45:39.160 | he says, "Do not go yet, because you do not have the power.
00:45:41.700 | "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
00:45:44.020 | "and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,
00:45:46.880 | "to the remotest part of the world."
00:45:48.600 | So we looked at it last week, how the Holy Spirit,
00:45:51.480 | being baptized with the Holy Spirit,
00:45:52.860 | is the power behind what you and I are called to do.
00:45:56.760 | J.I. Packer, sorry, Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones says this
00:46:01.220 | about that text that we all know,
00:46:04.200 | "Be still, and know that I am God."
00:46:07.860 | And he said, "Oftentimes, we misunderstand this text."
00:46:10.920 | And he says this, "We must not interpret that 'be still'
00:46:13.600 | "in a sentimental manner, some regarded as a kind
00:46:16.080 | "of exhortation to us to be silent.
00:46:18.780 | "But it is nothing of the sort.
00:46:21.520 | "It means give up or give in, and admit I am God.
00:46:25.520 | "God is addressing people who are opposed to him.
00:46:28.780 | "It is a call to revival.
00:46:30.980 | "Be still."
00:46:31.820 | He said, "We learned last week, well, how,
00:46:35.700 | "if the power behind our spiritual life
00:46:38.820 | "is the power of the Holy Spirit,
00:46:40.140 | "being baptized by the Holy Spirit,
00:46:41.480 | "how do we receive this baptism?"
00:46:44.280 | Peter makes it very clear.
00:46:45.360 | He says, "Repent and be baptized,
00:46:49.100 | "until we truly repent."
00:46:51.400 | Just like John the Baptist, just like Jesus said,
00:46:53.620 | "Bear fruit in accordance to repentance."
00:46:56.460 | Repentance isn't feeling bad.
00:46:58.500 | Repentance isn't acknowledging what is good.
00:47:03.480 | Repentance is turning away from our sins.
00:47:06.760 | And so he says, "Repent and be baptized by the Holy Spirit."
00:47:11.020 | Why is this so important?
00:47:14.400 | Because we cannot walk without it.
00:47:18.200 | We can produce everything that we can produce
00:47:20.720 | through man's work.
00:47:22.500 | Without the power of the Holy Spirit,
00:47:24.620 | we can gather people.
00:47:25.860 | If I make it more entertaining up here,
00:47:28.600 | keep my sermon short, that always seems to help.
00:47:32.420 | Make sure we have proper groups.
00:47:33.920 | I mean, our generation is hungering for community,
00:47:37.060 | because we don't have it in our culture.
00:47:40.260 | We don't have it at work.
00:47:41.100 | We don't have it in our neighborhood.
00:47:42.260 | So people are hungry for community.
00:47:43.560 | So if they come to church and they find a bunch of people
00:47:45.900 | that loves them, care for them,
00:47:47.980 | then automatically that will draw people.
00:47:49.980 | If what we do up here,
00:47:52.060 | if they grew up at church all their lives,
00:47:53.820 | they're gonna go to church anyway,
00:47:55.340 | might as well go to a church that's entertaining
00:47:56.940 | and the time passes quick.
00:47:58.700 | Kind of like going to driving school,
00:48:01.940 | 'cause you got a ticket and you gotta burn it anyway,
00:48:04.020 | might as well go to the comedy school, right?
00:48:06.540 | Instead of this dead serious, like, S-Officer, you know?
00:48:10.660 | Yeah, I don't know how many of you have been.
00:48:11.860 | I've been to plenty of traffic schools
00:48:15.200 | where time goes by much faster
00:48:17.600 | if the guy's entertaining, right?
00:48:20.060 | Lot of people see church that way.
00:48:21.540 | Well, I'm gonna go to church anyway,
00:48:22.740 | since I grew up and I'm a professing Christian,
00:48:25.020 | I don't want to disappoint my friends and family.
00:48:26.540 | So might as well go to church
00:48:28.200 | where it's gonna be entertaining.
00:48:31.140 | But there's no power.
00:48:33.740 | So we can gather people, we can make people feel good,
00:48:38.620 | we can make people want to be at church,
00:48:41.020 | we can build nice buildings, we can do even mission work,
00:48:44.380 | but the power to save someone from hell to Christ
00:48:49.820 | is not in us.
00:48:51.200 | We cannot bear fruit by ourselves.
00:48:55.320 | It's just more work.
00:48:57.500 | You have work of taking care of your children,
00:48:59.200 | you have work of paying your bills,
00:49:00.620 | you have work of taking care of your aging parents,
00:49:03.580 | you have work of saving enough for retirement,
00:49:06.060 | you have all kinds of work you need to do,
00:49:07.700 | and then you're just adding more work
00:49:09.540 | without the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:49:12.980 | It's like trying to buy in a car
00:49:16.100 | and then pushing it all your life,
00:49:19.980 | 'cause you got no gas.
00:49:21.420 | See, he says we have to be empowered by the Holy Spirit,
00:49:26.340 | and that's why it says in Ephesians 5, 518,
00:49:28.820 | he says be filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:49:31.100 | If you've been baptized,
00:49:32.540 | maybe some of you have never truly repented,
00:49:35.580 | so you've never experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit,
00:49:38.560 | so you don't know what we're talking about.
00:49:40.560 | Some of you who've been baptized by the Holy Spirit,
00:49:42.440 | and I'm not talking about some emotional high.
00:49:45.560 | I'm talking about all of a sudden your perspective changes.
00:49:48.040 | You're able to pray, the Word of God begins to make sense.
00:49:51.100 | Worship begins to bring life to you.
00:49:53.340 | You know what that feels like,
00:49:55.100 | but maybe it's been a long time
00:49:57.140 | since you've actually worshiped God in spirit.
00:49:59.440 | He says maybe 'cause you haven't been
00:50:02.700 | filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:50:04.180 | Well, the filling of the Holy Spirit is interesting.
00:50:07.020 | In Ephesians 5, 518, the word to fill
00:50:09.620 | is the word in Greek, pleru,
00:50:12.180 | and it's in the middle voice,
00:50:14.420 | middle voice meaning that he's not the one
00:50:16.420 | actively doing it, he's not passively doing this,
00:50:18.580 | sitting there doing nothing.
00:50:19.660 | Middle voice is used in the Greek
00:50:23.440 | to describe an action that you take to receive.
00:50:27.260 | So the best way to describe it
00:50:29.480 | and the best way to translate this word is
00:50:31.640 | let yourself be filled.
00:50:35.160 | Let yourself be filled.
00:50:36.440 | The Holy Spirit is not something that we control.
00:50:39.640 | We don't summon the Holy Spirit
00:50:41.400 | and this Holy Spirit comes running to us.
00:50:43.520 | He says the Holy Spirit is God.
00:50:45.440 | We don't tell him what to do.
00:50:47.560 | In fact, Jesus himself said that.
00:50:48.920 | Holy Spirit's like the wind.
00:50:49.900 | You don't know where it's gonna come,
00:50:50.940 | you don't know where it's gonna go,
00:50:52.360 | but you know when it's there.
00:50:53.820 | So when he says to Christians to be filled
00:50:55.700 | with the Holy Spirit, let yourself be filled,
00:50:57.920 | the Holy Spirit is not up in heaven hiding from us
00:51:00.720 | and we're going to look for him.
00:51:02.020 | Holy Spirit is in us actively working
00:51:04.600 | and he says to make sure that you live in such a way
00:51:07.520 | that the Holy Spirit, when it does move us,
00:51:09.580 | that we're able to receive.
00:51:10.960 | And so that word is used.
00:51:13.400 | The image that we have of this word to be filled
00:51:15.920 | is kind of an individual who is on a sailboat
00:51:18.520 | getting his sail ready
00:51:20.880 | and directing the sail toward the wind that's coming
00:51:24.240 | so that when the wind comes,
00:51:25.640 | that the boat can be moved by the power
00:51:27.600 | of the wind that comes.
00:51:29.120 | That's the imagery that we see
00:51:30.540 | about being filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:51:32.640 | See, the Holy Spirit is in us,
00:51:35.920 | groaning on our behalf,
00:51:37.080 | but maybe the way that we live,
00:51:39.720 | that we don't give room.
00:51:41.120 | We could put up the sail,
00:51:43.320 | but if the sail doesn't have room to catch the wind,
00:51:45.600 | it's useless.
00:51:46.540 | And so maybe we are living in such a way
00:51:50.080 | where we're coming and asking for the filling
00:51:53.800 | and the power of the Holy Spirit,
00:51:55.680 | but there's no room.
00:51:56.520 | You filled your life with the things of this world.
00:51:59.480 | Your mind is filled with movies and activities
00:52:02.400 | and desires and hopes.
00:52:04.800 | And then when you come to God,
00:52:06.000 | you say, "God, why don't you fill me?"
00:52:07.480 | But there's no room to be filled.
00:52:09.960 | So when he says to be filled,
00:52:11.320 | let yourself be filled.
00:52:12.560 | Live in such a way that when the Holy Spirit
00:52:15.080 | desires to move you, that you are ready.
00:52:17.080 | That's what it means to be filled.
00:52:19.320 | Why is the power of the Holy Spirit so important?
00:52:21.760 | One, we already talked about that.
00:52:24.320 | The power to live our Christian life
00:52:26.040 | is given to us in the Holy Spirit.
00:52:29.000 | Not your willpower, not your training,
00:52:31.320 | not your education, not your experience,
00:52:34.240 | but it says it's the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:52:36.860 | Somebody who had no training,
00:52:37.960 | never went to seminary,
00:52:38.840 | just a brand new Christian filled with the Holy Spirit
00:52:42.120 | is more empowered than an individual
00:52:44.000 | who's been walking with God for 60 years
00:52:46.360 | with all the training, with all the knowledge,
00:52:48.080 | with all the experience, yet no Holy Spirit.
00:52:51.660 | The power to live our Christian life is the Holy Spirit,
00:52:55.400 | so we are dependent upon the filling of the Holy Spirit.
00:52:59.400 | The Bible says that he is the counselor,
00:53:01.560 | the helper that comes.
00:53:03.160 | Jesus said that I'm going where I am going,
00:53:05.820 | you cannot come, but it is better for you if I go,
00:53:08.360 | because when I go, the Holy Spirit,
00:53:09.840 | the counselor, the helper, he's going to come.
00:53:12.500 | You know, today, probably more than ever
00:53:16.400 | that I've experienced in ministry
00:53:17.880 | where people are looking for counselors left and right.
00:53:21.120 | In and of itself, there's nothing wrong with that.
00:53:23.240 | In fact, my wife trained to be a biblical counselor,
00:53:25.920 | and I think that's one of the, in my opinion,
00:53:28.560 | the best training that she's gotten
00:53:30.540 | in 30-some years that I've known her.
00:53:33.360 | So I have nothing against counseling.
00:53:35.260 | I think it's a huge benefit,
00:53:36.680 | biblical counseling in particular,
00:53:38.380 | but we have created a generation filled with people
00:53:43.400 | who are looking from person to person, place to place,
00:53:47.740 | looking for human help before they run to Christ.
00:53:51.180 | Again, human counseling is good,
00:53:55.600 | especially if it's biblical counseling,
00:53:57.640 | but first and foremost, the Bible says
00:54:01.340 | our counselor is the Holy Spirit.
00:54:03.660 | He is our helper.
00:54:05.580 | Before we turn to any human institution,
00:54:07.860 | any leader, any counselor, are we running to him first,
00:54:13.880 | because the Bible says the Holy Spirit was sent to us
00:54:16.720 | so that he can counsel us, he can help us.
00:54:19.120 | Jesus also says that the Holy Spirit's gonna come,
00:54:22.200 | and he's going to remind us of all that he has said and done.
00:54:25.820 | If we're studying through 2 Peter,
00:54:28.060 | we know how much Peter has been emphasized
00:54:30.680 | to remember, to remember, don't forget,
00:54:32.480 | remember, remember, remember,
00:54:33.880 | especially this next text that we're gonna be looking at,
00:54:36.980 | because we have a tendency to forget.
00:54:39.020 | We can hear the word of God today,
00:54:42.240 | and you go out with your friends and grab some coffee
00:54:44.280 | or boba and eat some food,
00:54:45.560 | by tonight, you don't remember, right?
00:54:49.440 | Anybody remember why I did this?
00:54:51.300 | Yeah, you remember I did this,
00:54:54.880 | especially the younger ones, but why did I do that?
00:54:58.760 | What was the context of this?
00:55:00.680 | What was the message?
00:55:02.360 | See, you already forgot, right?
00:55:04.640 | I know, I've been preaching long enough to know
00:55:07.160 | that there are certain things that catch you,
00:55:09.080 | but there are certain things
00:55:10.840 | that you're not gonna remember, right?
00:55:14.040 | It's our tendency.
00:55:16.200 | When we're not empowered by the Holy Spirit,
00:55:18.160 | we kinda catch those funny little things
00:55:20.600 | that we say, oh yeah, I remember that.
00:55:22.200 | Why did he say that?
00:55:23.040 | I say, I don't know.
00:55:23.940 | So 10 years later, you're just gonna remember,
00:55:26.900 | oh, he did this, right?
00:55:29.680 | He said the Holy Spirit is gonna come.
00:55:31.100 | He's going to remind you of all the things
00:55:33.400 | that has been said and has done,
00:55:35.880 | because by being reminded of what it is
00:55:38.960 | that we have in Christ is what causes us
00:55:41.640 | to continue to persevere, of what we already have in Christ.
00:55:46.200 | He says the Holy Spirit's gonna come.
00:55:48.080 | The Holy Spirit is the one who's going
00:55:49.560 | to convict the world of sin.
00:55:51.200 | So we can organize, we can be trained, we can read books,
00:55:56.300 | but the power to cause somebody
00:55:58.160 | to be convicted of their sins
00:56:00.120 | and to repent and come to Christ is not in us.
00:56:04.640 | It's not because of our great training.
00:56:06.000 | It's not because of years of experience.
00:56:10.720 | He said it's the Holy Spirit.
00:56:11.960 | So when we're not filled with the Holy Spirit,
00:56:13.840 | we can go through the motion,
00:56:15.120 | we can go through the exercise,
00:56:16.680 | but you never see any fruit,
00:56:18.280 | because the real fruit comes
00:56:21.320 | in the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:56:22.960 | Why is this so important?
00:56:27.480 | Obviously, our whole Christian life is based upon,
00:56:31.040 | is empowered by, directed, reminded,
00:56:34.160 | and convicted by the power of the Holy Spirit.
00:56:36.920 | So when we're not filled with the Holy Spirit,
00:56:39.120 | I can teach, and you may like it or not like it.
00:56:42.720 | I can bring you to church.
00:56:45.920 | We can market the church in a way
00:56:47.240 | where it's more attractive to more people.
00:56:49.620 | We can go through the motion and do discipleship,
00:56:52.580 | and then build up strong relationships,
00:56:55.640 | but there's no real fruit.
00:56:57.340 | Real fruit comes from abiding in Christ,
00:57:02.060 | in His Word, and by the Holy Spirit.
00:57:04.180 | He says when Christ comes, the Holy Spirit's gonna come,
00:57:08.980 | and He's gonna baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
00:57:12.800 | And He also says in verse 17,
00:57:14.400 | when He comes, His winnowing fork is in His hand
00:57:17.320 | to thoroughly clear His threshing floor
00:57:19.240 | and to gather the wheat into His barn,
00:57:21.240 | but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
00:57:25.600 | He said when Christ comes,
00:57:28.580 | He's going to separate the wheat and the chaff.
00:57:32.120 | If you can put up that picture for me.
00:57:35.420 | That's a picture of the wheat and the chaff.
00:57:37.960 | The wheat is on your right, and the chaff is on the left.
00:57:41.480 | The chaff basically is what covers the wheat.
00:57:43.880 | And in order for them to be able to eat the wheat,
00:57:46.040 | they have to separate the chaff.
00:57:48.000 | So if you can go to the next one.
00:57:50.400 | And so this is an image of a farmer
00:57:52.920 | who is separating the wheat and the chaff.
00:57:54.520 | So he would basically take the fork,
00:57:56.840 | and he would throw it up in the air,
00:57:58.240 | and when the wind blows,
00:57:59.320 | because the chaff basically has no weight,
00:58:02.380 | the wind will blow, and because wheat has weight,
00:58:04.440 | it'll fall to the ground.
00:58:05.420 | That's how they separate.
00:58:07.160 | So Jesus is using this imagery of something that's worthless
00:58:11.840 | with something that they've been laboring for,
00:58:14.240 | and how when He comes, when revival comes,
00:58:17.080 | He's going to separate the two.
00:58:18.740 | And He's going to burn what is useless,
00:58:24.040 | and He's going to take the others into the barn.
00:58:26.140 | Obviously, the imagery that He's talking about
00:58:29.160 | is about eternal reward and eternal judgment.
00:58:32.620 | We typically think that when Jesus comes,
00:58:36.760 | we're all gonna stand together, hold hands,
00:58:39.560 | and sing kumbaya, and whatever the race,
00:58:42.760 | whatever the background,
00:58:44.240 | all denominations gonna be gone,
00:58:47.080 | and we're all gonna stand together,
00:58:48.680 | no matter what your background,
00:58:49.920 | no matter what your theology,
00:58:51.040 | no matter what your life, we're all gonna be together.
00:58:53.480 | That's not what the Bible says.
00:58:55.080 | The Bible says that when Jesus comes in His glory,
00:59:00.120 | He's going to separate.
00:59:02.240 | And that language is consistent all throughout Scripture,
00:59:06.180 | that when God shows up, the first thing He does is divide.
00:59:10.800 | He determines right and wrong, holy and unholy,
00:59:13.740 | the rebellious and obedient.
00:59:16.080 | That's the first thing that He does, He divides.
00:59:19.240 | In Exodus 32, 26 through 28,
00:59:22.180 | when Moses was up in the mountain
00:59:23.640 | and received the law of God,
00:59:25.700 | Israelites already began to rebel,
00:59:28.280 | and they made the golden calf,
00:59:29.640 | and God sends them back down
00:59:30.760 | to deal with the sin and rebellion.
00:59:34.120 | He says this in verse 26,
00:59:35.440 | "Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said,
00:59:37.340 | "Whoever is for the Lord, come to me,
00:59:39.240 | "and all the sons of Levi gather together to Him.
00:59:42.520 | "He said to them, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,
00:59:44.440 | "'Every man of you put his sword upon his thigh,
00:59:47.660 | "'and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp,
00:59:50.220 | "'and kill every man his brother,
00:59:51.700 | "'and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.'
00:59:54.080 | "So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed,
00:59:56.400 | "and about 3,000 men of people fell that day."
01:00:00.760 | God didn't just look at the rebellion of His people and say,
01:00:05.000 | "Oh, what am I gonna do with you?"
01:00:06.700 | In fact, God became so angry with their sin,
01:00:10.620 | He said, "If I go with them, they're going to die,
01:00:13.160 | "and Moses had to plead with God,
01:00:15.280 | "if you don't go with us, we shall surely die,
01:00:17.960 | "you must come."
01:00:19.640 | And so God relents, He says, "I will go,
01:00:21.340 | "but I will go from a distance,
01:00:22.520 | "because if I draw near, they will all die."
01:00:25.540 | Joshua, after leading them into the promised land,
01:00:31.480 | conquering their enemies, at the end of his life,
01:00:34.440 | he saw Israelites going back and forth,
01:00:37.560 | and back and forth, of worshiping idols,
01:00:40.000 | and coming to God, worshiping idols, coming to God,
01:00:41.960 | at the end of his life, he says, "Enough."
01:00:44.160 | In Joshua 24, 15, it says,
01:00:46.720 | "If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord,
01:00:49.480 | "choose for yourself today whom you will serve."
01:00:53.360 | He's not talking to the Midianites,
01:00:55.960 | he's not talking to the Canaanites,
01:00:57.800 | he's talking to Israel,
01:01:00.280 | people that God calls apple of His eye,
01:01:02.720 | He personally chose, His covenant was upon these people,
01:01:06.400 | and upon these people, the people of God,
01:01:08.760 | he said, "Choose!"
01:01:10.280 | The reason why he told them to choose
01:01:12.800 | was because they kept on going back and forth.
01:01:15.960 | Whenever it was convenient, they would worship God,
01:01:18.960 | when it became inconvenient, when it became difficult,
01:01:22.160 | and when they were afraid that the rain wasn't coming,
01:01:25.480 | that God wasn't answering their prayer,
01:01:26.920 | they would go and worship these idols.
01:01:28.980 | So at the end of his life, Joshua says,
01:01:31.420 | "Enough is enough.
01:01:33.520 | "Choose you this day whom you will serve,
01:01:35.720 | "whether the gods which your father served,
01:01:37.720 | "which were beyond the river,
01:01:38.920 | "or the gods of the Amorites,
01:01:41.160 | "in whose land you are living,
01:01:42.440 | "but ask for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
01:01:46.640 | And we come to the new covenant,
01:01:49.640 | and that same God is the God of the New Testament.
01:01:53.160 | We may look at that and say,
01:01:54.000 | "Well, God was harsh in the Old Testament,
01:01:55.380 | "but in the New Testament, He's all about grace and love."
01:01:58.960 | That same language exists all throughout the new covenant,
01:02:01.860 | in 2 Corinthians 6, 14 to 18.
01:02:03.740 | Here's a church who's going astray.
01:02:05.580 | Division, all kinds of immorality in the church,
01:02:09.860 | and they were just allowing it to happen,
01:02:11.420 | and Paul writes this harsh letter to them,
01:02:13.420 | and this is what he says.
01:02:14.380 | "Do not be bound together with unbelievers,
01:02:16.620 | "for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness,
01:02:19.500 | "or what fellowship has light with darkness?
01:02:22.020 | "Or what harmony has Christ with Belial?
01:02:24.400 | "Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
01:02:26.900 | "Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols?
01:02:29.720 | "For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said.
01:02:33.760 | "I will dwell in them and walk among them,
01:02:35.600 | "and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
01:02:37.800 | "Therefore," he says, "because I will be among you,
01:02:41.720 | "I will be with you,
01:02:43.460 | "therefore come out from their midst and be separate,
01:02:47.460 | "says the Lord, and do not touch what is unclean.
01:02:50.520 | "And I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you,
01:02:53.380 | "and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
01:02:55.080 | "says the Lord Almighty."
01:02:56.720 | God says, "Separate."
01:02:58.160 | If you want me to be in your midst,
01:03:01.120 | if you want revival, he says, "Separate."
01:03:04.560 | Put aside your idols.
01:03:06.800 | Genuinely repent.
01:03:08.840 | Stop dabbling in the things of this world.
01:03:12.360 | Make room for the Holy Spirit so that we may be consumed
01:03:15.700 | and be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
01:03:17.320 | You cannot ask God for revival
01:03:20.960 | and continue to live playing around
01:03:24.260 | with the temptation of the world.
01:03:26.640 | If you want me to be in your midst, he said, "Separate."
01:03:30.480 | Separate from the things that are unclean.
01:03:32.280 | Separate from the things that are in rebellion against God.
01:03:36.120 | In Hebrews chapter 13, 12, 13, says,
01:03:40.440 | "Therefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people
01:03:43.080 | "through his own blood, suffered outside the gate,
01:03:46.320 | "so let us go out to him outside the camp,
01:03:48.660 | "bearing his reproach."
01:03:53.800 | This invitation to come to him
01:03:55.480 | is to follow him outside the camp, outside.
01:03:59.120 | How much of our frustration is because we're trying
01:04:02.240 | to meet Christ inside the camp?
01:04:05.120 | While we retain this life,
01:04:06.840 | while we retain all the blessings,
01:04:08.400 | all the temptations of this life,
01:04:10.260 | while having one eye toward the world, one eye toward God,
01:04:13.200 | and pleading with God to meet me here inside the camp,
01:04:18.200 | the whole time where God is waiting for us to come out.
01:04:24.120 | Come out.
01:04:25.120 | How much of the frustration in the church, in our lives,
01:04:30.280 | in our families, is because we have committed
01:04:33.080 | to be in this camp and want Christ to come where I am
01:04:38.080 | instead of going where he is.
01:04:41.120 | See, this language of separating
01:04:43.920 | is all throughout the New Testament.
01:04:46.160 | Matthew 25, 32, "All the nations will be gathered before him
01:04:49.340 | "and he will separate them from one another
01:04:51.780 | "as a shepherd separates a sheep from the goat."
01:04:55.240 | Whenever God appears, he always separates.
01:04:58.480 | He always separates.
01:05:00.060 | In fact, Jesus reminds us in Matthew 10, 34 to 39,
01:05:06.920 | "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth.
01:05:10.460 | "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
01:05:14.640 | "For I came to set a man against his father
01:05:16.640 | "and a daughter against her mother
01:05:18.340 | "and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,
01:05:20.560 | "and a man's enemies will be the members
01:05:22.820 | "of his own household.
01:05:24.800 | "He who loves father or mother more than me
01:05:27.160 | "is not worthy of me, and he who loves son or daughter
01:05:29.740 | "more than me is not worthy of me,
01:05:31.240 | "and he who does not take his cross and follow after me
01:05:33.760 | "is not worthy of me.
01:05:34.840 | "He who has found his life will lose it,
01:05:36.720 | "and he who has lost his life for my sake will find it."
01:05:40.560 | This text is not a welcoming text for families
01:05:47.140 | who are looking for a good church
01:05:48.100 | for their children to attend.
01:05:50.400 | Right, I know that we're starting UCI,
01:05:52.440 | and usually this time of the year,
01:05:53.960 | we have a lot of parents who are bringing children
01:05:56.200 | to church, and then first sermon you hear
01:05:58.280 | is separate from your parents.
01:05:59.880 | Right, that's not what you wanna hear.
01:06:03.400 | You wanna hear honor your father or mother
01:06:04.920 | if you wanna live long and prosperous.
01:06:06.520 | That's what you wanna hear, right?
01:06:09.140 | But that's what he says.
01:06:10.340 | You know, people have a tendency to think
01:06:15.680 | that if I follow Christ with all my heart,
01:06:18.900 | I am gonna end up forfeiting my parents.
01:06:21.720 | Or sometimes your parents think the same thing,
01:06:23.440 | that if I take my faith to that degree,
01:06:27.440 | then I'm gonna end up forfeiting
01:06:28.520 | what's good for my children.
01:06:29.920 | God never causes us to choose
01:06:36.720 | what is good for our parents for what is good for God.
01:06:41.100 | Because what is the best for our parents
01:06:45.800 | is for you to love the Lord your God
01:06:47.480 | with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
01:06:50.560 | Is to go to Christ and bring your parents with you.
01:06:54.540 | For the parents, it is never a choice
01:06:58.720 | between taking care of your children versus loving God.
01:07:03.040 | Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,
01:07:05.220 | and take your children with you.
01:07:06.860 | It is not a choice between the two.
01:07:10.400 | It's just that we don't have enough faith
01:07:12.400 | to see that that's the best place to be.
01:07:15.720 | And sometimes challenging our unbelieving families
01:07:19.880 | is the best thing for them.
01:07:21.480 | And I was a youth pastor many years ago,
01:07:25.480 | and I remember dealing with parents
01:07:29.920 | who would bring their children to church
01:07:31.480 | because their children are getting into trouble.
01:07:33.920 | They're joining gangs, or they're not doing well at school,
01:07:36.240 | or they're being rebellious or disobedient.
01:07:38.120 | And so they would say, hey, can you take care of these kids?
01:07:41.400 | And they would come, and some of them would change.
01:07:43.660 | They would receive Christ,
01:07:44.720 | and they would begin to serve the Lord,
01:07:46.960 | come to Bible study, and this kid was going out
01:07:49.280 | getting drunk, and all of a sudden,
01:07:50.520 | he's at Bible study and prayer meetings,
01:07:52.000 | and his parents are very happy.
01:07:54.000 | We're so thankful for this ministry.
01:07:55.900 | And then these kids would go too far.
01:07:58.800 | And then they would love the Lord,
01:08:01.960 | and they'd say, I wanna go into ministry.
01:08:03.800 | And then some of them decided to go into missions,
01:08:07.340 | and all of a sudden, these same parents
01:08:08.720 | who were thanking me started hating my guts.
01:08:10.960 | You know, there's one particular student that I remember,
01:08:14.480 | he was one of the top students in his class,
01:08:16.320 | and he decided he wanted to go into ministry,
01:08:18.360 | and that same mom, who was so appreciative of me,
01:08:22.520 | and I ran into her at a restaurant,
01:08:25.460 | and she looked straight at me, just walked straight by.
01:08:28.440 | And I found out later she was angry
01:08:29.720 | because her son told her
01:08:31.300 | that she wanted to go into ministry.
01:08:33.100 | Eventually, he decided not to go,
01:08:36.120 | and he went to a good school,
01:08:38.880 | and then he became a medical doctor,
01:08:41.800 | and then all of a sudden, the mom came back
01:08:43.200 | and said, thank you so much.
01:08:44.680 | (congregation laughing)
01:08:48.000 | If you are a nominal Christian,
01:08:51.140 | you better hope that your children
01:08:55.240 | don't get on fire for God,
01:08:57.420 | 'cause if they do, you'll lose them.
01:08:59.220 | 'Cause they're gonna see that your faith wasn't real.
01:09:05.320 | If your children, who are raising in the church,
01:09:10.320 | sees that your faith isn't real,
01:09:12.600 | and they come to faith,
01:09:13.800 | and they get baptized with the Holy Spirit,
01:09:15.320 | the first thing that's gonna happen
01:09:16.280 | is you're gonna lose them,
01:09:18.480 | 'cause they're not gonna be able to listen to you.
01:09:20.560 | They're gonna make Christ their Lord, not you.
01:09:22.860 | This is what he means when he says,
01:09:27.420 | when you are walking right with Christ,
01:09:31.400 | and the Holy Spirit comes, and he empowers individuals,
01:09:34.880 | he will separate even family members
01:09:37.520 | between the righteous and unrighteous,
01:09:40.320 | believers and unbelievers.
01:09:41.640 | The Bible says, Jesus said when he introduced the church,
01:09:44.920 | "The gates of Hades will not prevail against it."
01:09:47.960 | Gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
01:09:50.760 | Who's behind the gate?
01:09:52.920 | Not the church.
01:09:54.640 | We're not in a defensive position.
01:09:56.540 | We're not behind the gate waiting,
01:09:58.240 | and concerned that the darkness
01:10:02.560 | is gonna come into our homes.
01:10:04.500 | No, he said the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
01:10:09.060 | We're in the offense.
01:10:11.060 | We're not the one in defense.
01:10:12.760 | He put us here to be the light.
01:10:14.440 | We're in a spiritual battle,
01:10:16.480 | and the Bible reminds us that.
01:10:18.200 | We're in this battle.
01:10:20.680 | That's why we don't live in glory.
01:10:22.680 | We live to glorify God.
01:10:24.040 | When we are glorified, the gospel gets messed up.
01:10:28.040 | It gets tainted.
01:10:29.960 | It gets watered down.
01:10:30.920 | It gets murky, but when he's glorified, life in darkness.
01:10:35.360 | That's why he says we have been crucified with Christ.
01:10:38.200 | It's no longer us or me who live,
01:10:40.480 | but Christ who lives in me,
01:10:41.820 | because Christ needs to shine.
01:10:45.860 | That's why he says he who finds his life will lose it.
01:10:48.660 | When revival comes, God separates.
01:10:55.240 | Well, how does this separating happen?
01:10:58.000 | If the dividing line was between church people
01:11:02.060 | and people who don't go to church,
01:11:03.740 | there's no need for a winnowing fork
01:11:05.020 | 'cause we're already divided,
01:11:06.460 | 'cause we're here.
01:11:09.420 | Clearly, that's not the dividing line.
01:11:11.220 | If the dividing lines were people who confessed
01:11:13.540 | and didn't confess, what Jesus says in Matthew 7:21,
01:11:16.340 | "Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord,
01:11:18.160 | "will enter the kingdom of heaven."
01:11:19.660 | So the dividing line is not between those who confess
01:11:21.900 | and didn't confess.
01:11:23.860 | The dividing line isn't position of leadership
01:11:28.860 | because the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the scribes,
01:11:33.400 | they would have been clearly on the right,
01:11:35.960 | but clearly we know that that's not
01:11:37.260 | where the dividing line is.
01:11:38.100 | 'Cause the dividing line is hard work.
01:11:40.740 | Nobody worked harder than the Pharisees.
01:11:43.540 | Nobody went and traveled to make proselyte than the Pharisees.
01:11:47.660 | Nobody prayed more than the Pharisees.
01:11:49.020 | Nobody gave more than the Pharisees.
01:11:51.580 | Clearly, the dividing line wasn't simply hard work.
01:11:54.460 | It says in Matthew 13, 24 to 30,
01:11:59.100 | Jesus gives a parable similar to what is said in verse 17,
01:12:03.220 | that in time, God will separate the wheat and the tares.
01:12:07.700 | If you can put up the next picture for me,
01:12:10.940 | those are the pictures of the wheat and the tares, right?
01:12:14.060 | Now, the wheat on the left, the tares on the right.
01:12:15.780 | Now, in this picture, you can tell the difference
01:12:17.860 | because obviously the wheat is full
01:12:19.580 | and the tares are sparse.
01:12:21.140 | But imagine putting the tares within the wheat.
01:12:23.900 | Imagine if that was one picture.
01:12:25.520 | How would you be able to separate
01:12:27.620 | between the wheat and the tares?
01:12:29.460 | So Jesus says in this parable,
01:12:31.660 | he said early on, you're not able to separate
01:12:34.420 | 'cause the danger is by separating,
01:12:36.400 | you're gonna end up pulling up the wheat with the tares.
01:12:39.500 | But as time goes by, the wheat begins to bear fruit.
01:12:45.460 | And so wheat begins to grow.
01:12:46.900 | And as it grows, because of the weight of the wheat inside,
01:12:50.060 | it begins to bend.
01:12:51.240 | The tares, there's no fruit.
01:12:54.420 | And as a result, it keeps going.
01:12:56.660 | So in the early on, you can't tell the difference.
01:12:59.460 | But as time goes by and as fruits begin to become obvious,
01:13:03.800 | it is very obvious what's the wheat and what's the tares.
01:13:06.060 | And Jesus uses that as an illustration of the church.
01:13:09.900 | Not the church in the world, but church.
01:13:11.980 | That in the church, he says the enemy has come
01:13:15.020 | and he has planted tares all over.
01:13:18.020 | And I believe in a post-Christian culture
01:13:21.200 | because it had become so easy to confess Christ
01:13:24.840 | that we are filled with tares.
01:13:27.180 | And that is a scary thing to think.
01:13:31.240 | See, the tares probably wouldn't care what I say.
01:13:35.260 | It's not relevant to them.
01:13:36.140 | They don't believe anyway.
01:13:36.980 | They're not here to hear the truth anyway.
01:13:39.500 | So tares will hear it and then go out the door
01:13:41.700 | and live like they've never heard this.
01:13:43.780 | But he says, eventually,
01:13:46.140 | you will be able to tell the difference by their fruit.
01:13:50.200 | We will be tested with relationship.
01:13:53.980 | We will be tested with temptation.
01:13:55.820 | We will be tested at home.
01:13:57.060 | We're tested when we're young.
01:13:58.260 | We're tested when we're older.
01:14:00.120 | All kinds of trials will come into our life
01:14:03.860 | to see if we're gonna bear fruit
01:14:05.740 | or we're just going through the motion.
01:14:10.020 | In Titus 1:16, it says,
01:14:16.780 | "They profess to know God,
01:14:17.860 | "but by their deeds, they deny him."
01:14:21.300 | Their confession and their life just do not match.
01:14:24.120 | Their confession and their life,
01:14:27.580 | their choices that they make, just do not match.
01:14:32.180 | In fact, most people in the church, in Matthew 13, 22,
01:14:35.620 | it says, "And the one on whom the seed was sown,
01:14:37.900 | "among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word
01:14:40.220 | "and worry about the world,
01:14:41.540 | "and deceitfulness of wealth choked the word,
01:14:44.400 | "and it becomes unfruitful."
01:14:46.500 | Most people who fall away
01:14:49.020 | don't fall away because of one event.
01:14:51.100 | They don't fall away because there's this one temptation
01:14:54.680 | that they couldn't overcome
01:14:55.720 | or because of this one sin that they kept on compromising.
01:14:58.660 | Most people fall away
01:15:00.780 | because their life is being choked
01:15:03.580 | by the concerns over this world.
01:15:06.140 | There's no room for the Holy Spirit.
01:15:09.540 | You have form of godliness, you have titles,
01:15:14.220 | you're going through the motion, but there's no power.
01:15:16.880 | There's no power.
01:15:18.940 | So it's like buying a car and just pushing it from behind.
01:15:23.720 | And it is difficult.
01:15:26.220 | And it's just work.
01:15:30.260 | I think about how hard life is,
01:15:32.660 | even if you weren't a Christian.
01:15:34.260 | You work hard to get into the right school.
01:15:38.100 | You work hard to graduate.
01:15:39.500 | You work hard to get the good job.
01:15:42.100 | You work hard to make your marriage work.
01:15:44.780 | You work hard to raise children.
01:15:46.760 | You know how hard that is.
01:15:49.300 | You work hard to pay the bills.
01:15:51.320 | You work hard to survive.
01:15:55.080 | You work hard to save enough for retirement.
01:15:58.320 | You work hard.
01:16:00.260 | Even if you weren't a Christian,
01:16:01.580 | living in this fallen world,
01:16:02.820 | dealing with your neighbors, dealing with your wife,
01:16:04.860 | dealing with your children, dealing with your family,
01:16:07.260 | you have enough heartache, enough difficulties.
01:16:09.820 | And then you come to church, says to give,
01:16:12.940 | sacrifice, love, serve.
01:16:16.140 | And when you are laboring in the church
01:16:19.940 | without the power of the Holy Spirit,
01:16:21.620 | all you've done is added more work to a difficult life.
01:16:26.300 | No wonder you don't make it.
01:16:29.780 | You can go for a little bit because of your passion.
01:16:31.820 | You go for a little bit because of discipline.
01:16:34.120 | And eventually you just become a nominal Christian.
01:16:38.700 | Because you have just enough faith
01:16:41.340 | to be afraid to die without Christ.
01:16:43.960 | But you don't have enough to be thriving in your faith.
01:16:49.140 | To be coming to God and really understanding
01:16:53.500 | what it means to have this life
01:16:55.060 | and have this life abundantly.
01:16:58.180 | And so you resolve to stay in the back.
01:17:02.980 | Just let the young kids do this.
01:17:06.660 | Let them do this.
01:17:09.340 | Because you have form without power.
01:17:14.660 | When revival comes, when revival comes,
01:17:21.540 | he brings the power.
01:17:23.420 | He separates the righteous and unrighteous.
01:17:28.740 | He separates the obedient and the disobedient.
01:17:31.580 | He separates the wheat and the tares,
01:17:33.420 | and the wheat and the chaff.
01:17:34.820 | If we are content with what you experience,
01:17:42.860 | then this is where you will be.
01:17:47.180 | But this is not where it's going to stay.
01:17:49.220 | It's gonna get much worse, much worse.
01:17:53.980 | Because work without power doesn't stay the same.
01:17:58.180 | I can hold onto this Bible and it's not much work right now.
01:18:02.420 | But ask me 10 hours later,
01:18:04.800 | my arm's gonna feel like it's broken.
01:18:07.660 | Work without power will eventually erode all your muscles
01:18:13.460 | to the point where you cannot persevere.
01:18:15.700 | Church is a miserable place to be without the power of God.
01:18:23.520 | We think if the church is divided,
01:18:25.740 | if we just get them together, spend more time together,
01:18:28.460 | kind of like the companies where they take you to,
01:18:30.960 | survival room, I don't know what that's called,
01:18:35.220 | break room, escape room, whatever.
01:18:38.220 | So it's some kind of room everybody goes into.
01:18:40.780 | You do that for team building,
01:18:43.460 | because they try to build a team
01:18:45.140 | and says you can go to work,
01:18:46.340 | and you can be more productive if you care for each other.
01:18:49.580 | And so you artificially create this team,
01:18:51.980 | even though behind the scenes you could hate each other.
01:18:54.780 | You're gossiping toward one another,
01:18:57.140 | and you get jealous when somebody gets a promotion.
01:18:59.140 | But this is artificial unity,
01:19:02.580 | all for the purpose of being more productive.
01:19:04.860 | But it doesn't last long, because it's just superficial.
01:19:09.100 | So if in the church you fill the room
01:19:13.120 | with people who are unrepented,
01:19:14.900 | who have not filled with the power of the Holy Spirit,
01:19:17.580 | eventually our sins come out.
01:19:21.740 | Eventually our selfishness comes out.
01:19:23.580 | Eventually our pride comes out.
01:19:24.860 | The gossip comes out.
01:19:25.780 | Slander comes out.
01:19:26.780 | And eventually if you stay in one place long enough,
01:19:30.260 | more of that comes out.
01:19:32.620 | So in every church, if you're new to the church,
01:19:35.020 | and you say oh I love this church, I love the people,
01:19:37.860 | you're in a honeymoon stage.
01:19:39.320 | Stay long enough, you'll see.
01:19:42.620 | You'll see my faults, I'll see your faults,
01:19:47.700 | and you'll see each other's faults.
01:19:49.580 | And eventually you'll say oh, it's not what I expected.
01:19:52.340 | Church is a miserable place,
01:19:55.420 | where more and more sinners are gathered together
01:20:00.000 | and holding on to a form of godliness with no power.
01:20:03.440 | I remember as a young kid, I don't know that many people
01:20:07.080 | who hated church as much as I hated church.
01:20:10.300 | My dad was a pastor, my grandfather was a pastor,
01:20:12.620 | so I'd grown up in the church all my life.
01:20:14.720 | And I just remember, or as early as 13,
01:20:19.740 | 13, 13 is what, like seventh, eighth grade?
01:20:22.820 | As early as 13, I resolved to not go to church
01:20:27.120 | when I'm old enough, at 13.
01:20:29.220 | Because my memories of my childhood
01:20:32.580 | is coming back from church, sitting in the backseat
01:20:34.740 | of my parents coming home, talking about
01:20:36.520 | what kind of problems that they were dealing with at church.
01:20:40.220 | So even as a young kid, I'm picking up all this stuff,
01:20:42.340 | it's like why do people go to church?
01:20:44.540 | They don't like each other.
01:20:46.400 | They're ripping on each other,
01:20:47.380 | and then they come to church shaking hands,
01:20:48.860 | eating donuts, you know, having communion,
01:20:51.620 | and then in the back I'm hearing all of this stuff.
01:20:53.860 | It's like why do they go to church?
01:20:54.700 | So I resolved, again as a non-Christian,
01:20:56.420 | I'm observing this, what a miserable place to be.
01:20:59.740 | I don't wanna leave church 'cause that's going
01:21:02.500 | to make it look bad on my dad, so when I'm 18, I'm gone.
01:21:05.420 | By the grace of God, I became a Christian.
01:21:08.700 | And I realized that what I saw was a church
01:21:14.820 | without the power of the Holy Spirit.
01:21:17.660 | The church has gone astray.
01:21:19.440 | That the church that I experienced
01:21:22.500 | is not the church that God is building.
01:21:24.620 | And so if church is just a gathering of people,
01:21:31.980 | a lot of good intentioned people who's gathering money
01:21:39.140 | to do some good things, it is not enough
01:21:43.820 | to keep us together.
01:21:45.700 | We will eventually become sour.
01:21:47.300 | We will eventually have a hard time bearing
01:21:51.140 | with one another, let alone loving one another.
01:21:54.640 | But when people are baptized by the Holy Spirit
01:22:00.260 | and we're filled with the Holy Spirit,
01:22:02.460 | man, it's heaven on earth.
01:22:05.020 | There's nothing like it.
01:22:08.420 | There's no relationship like it.
01:22:11.860 | And every time I come, it reminds me
01:22:15.420 | of where I'm headed, that we're gonna be
01:22:17.740 | worshiping God together in spirit and in truth,
01:22:20.500 | all nations, all backgrounds, all colors,
01:22:23.520 | when the Holy Spirit is the one gathering us.
01:22:27.780 | I pray for revival.
01:22:32.620 | I pray for revival.
01:22:36.840 | Every day I pray for revival.
01:22:41.140 | Because I know that the only answer
01:22:44.820 | to whatever you are struggling with is Christ.
01:22:48.220 | If you meet Christ, if you know Christ,
01:22:55.440 | if you love Christ, and if you worship Christ,
01:22:59.060 | all your answers will be answered in Christ.
01:23:03.660 | I know that with all my heart.
01:23:09.280 | I am absolutely convinced the only thing
01:23:13.880 | that can help you is to come meet Christ
01:23:17.200 | if Christ walks among us, if Christ is adored,
01:23:22.100 | if Christ is worshiped, if Christ is obeyed,
01:23:25.040 | if Christ is exalted.
01:23:26.640 | Your problem isn't finance.
01:23:30.560 | Your problem isn't direction.
01:23:31.840 | Your problem isn't purpose.
01:23:33.360 | Your problem isn't your wife, it isn't your husband,
01:23:36.100 | it isn't your children.
01:23:39.240 | If you have Christ, all of a sudden,
01:23:42.960 | everything begins to make sense.
01:23:44.600 | All of a sudden, He delivers you.
01:23:47.720 | From years of bondage because of your sin,
