Alright, good morning. If you can turn your Bibles with me to Luke chapter 6. 00:29:19.000 |
And turning his gaze toward his disciples, he began to say, 00:29:23.000 |
"Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 00:29:26.000 |
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. 00:29:30.000 |
Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 00:29:33.000 |
Blessed are you when men hate you and ostracize you and insult you 00:29:37.000 |
and scorn your name as evil for the sake of the Son of Man. 00:29:41.000 |
Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. 00:29:46.000 |
For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets, 00:29:49.000 |
but woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full. 00:29:54.000 |
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you shall be hungry. 00:29:58.000 |
Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 00:30:03.000 |
for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way." 00:30:14.000 |
a deepening understanding of your grace and love 00:30:20.000 |
Help us, Lord God, to respond in your word, Father, 00:30:24.000 |
that we would not just be hearers, but be doers. 00:30:27.000 |
That we would be eager, Lord God, to receive and to apply. 00:30:32.000 |
As I mentioned, the beatitude that we are in this week, 00:30:39.000 |
the more thorough version of it is in Matthew chapter 5. 00:30:46.000 |
we would just go down the list of what it says. 00:30:48.000 |
But basically, the beatitude is the entrance into the kingdom of God. 00:30:54.000 |
So Jesus is talking about how he came to bring the kingdom. 00:30:57.000 |
We talked about that last week, the kingdom of God, or the week before that. 00:31:00.000 |
And the beatitude is basically the gospel presentation. 00:31:04.000 |
If you read that carefully about "Blessed are the poor, 00:31:07.000 |
blessed are those who mourn, blessed are those who hunger, 00:31:13.000 |
and that these are the characteristics of the new citizenship 00:31:19.000 |
Luke's version is a summary of the beatitude that he gave. 00:31:25.000 |
And basically, there's four things that he mentions here. 00:31:28.000 |
But every single one of these things that he mentions 00:31:30.000 |
is a complete overturn of what the world tries to work toward. 00:31:38.000 |
"Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God." 00:31:41.000 |
I mean, think about when we enter into this world, 00:31:44.000 |
since we're little kids, we desire for ourselves, for our children, 00:31:49.000 |
that they, at one point, will become wealthy. 00:31:52.000 |
And then, for Koreans, they have that "doljabi" thing, 00:31:59.000 |
They're going to become a doctor, they're going to become a lawyer, 00:32:03.000 |
And whatever it is, it's for the hope that at some point, 00:32:07.000 |
our children will be blessed, and they'll have money, 00:32:11.000 |
and they'll hopefully, by doing that, you'll be able to bless other people. 00:32:15.000 |
But the beatitude tells us, "Blessed are the poor." 00:32:19.000 |
How often have you gone to a poor country thinking they are blessed? 00:32:26.000 |
How often have you seen somebody who is struggling financially, 00:32:42.000 |
and it double-tripled, then you're really blessed. 00:32:47.000 |
But the values of the kingdom is not just different. 00:32:51.000 |
It basically takes what the world pursues and values, 00:32:59.000 |
That whatever it is that before you met Christ that you are pursuing, 00:33:03.000 |
it's not just a simple tweak that the gospel challenges us to pursue. 00:33:11.000 |
It's complete metamorphosis, complete change. 00:33:16.000 |
"Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied." 00:33:21.000 |
Today, the next two that he talks about goes even further than that. 00:33:28.000 |
"Blessed are you who weep, or those who mourn." 00:33:31.000 |
This is not just talking about somebody who is sad, 00:33:33.000 |
or something difficult happened in your life. 00:33:45.000 |
Basically, again, we think that when somebody's home is filled with laughter and joy, 00:33:58.000 |
But here it says, "Blessed are those who weep." 00:34:03.000 |
When Christians stand out different from the world more than any other time 00:34:17.000 |
You prayed for a job, and you got the best job that you could possibly imagine. 00:34:22.000 |
Everybody knows how to rejoice when good things happen. 00:34:26.000 |
What differentiates us from the rest of the world is when we get squeezed. 00:34:31.000 |
When suffering comes into our lives, when mourning comes into our lives, 00:34:35.000 |
what comes out of that squeezing is what differentiates us from the rest of the world. 00:34:42.000 |
In 1 Thessalonians 4:13, it says, "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, 00:34:47.000 |
about those who are asleep," asleep meaning those who died, 00:34:51.000 |
"so that you will not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope." 00:34:59.000 |
The difference between the suffering of the world and suffering of Christians 00:35:02.000 |
is that we suffer, we mourn, we cry, but it says we have hope. 00:35:11.000 |
If you've seen somebody who has no hope, suffering, all you can do is to be there. 00:35:17.000 |
Distract them. Just distract them from their pain. 00:35:21.000 |
You can be there. You can maybe provide some help, but it's temporary 00:35:25.000 |
because there's no real hope outside of that. 00:35:28.000 |
We're just trying to share some of that suffering, to distract them 00:35:31.000 |
so that they would forget the pain for a short period of time. 00:35:34.000 |
But he says for Christians, we do not suffer like the rest of the world. 00:35:44.000 |
knowing that at some point this grieving is going to end. 00:35:47.000 |
John 16, 28, it says, "These things I have spoken to you, so that in me you may have peace. 00:35:55.000 |
In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage. 00:36:02.000 |
He doesn't say he's going to save you from any kind of troubles. 00:36:06.000 |
He says you will have tribulation. As long as you live on this earth, you will have tribulation. 00:36:10.000 |
But he says the hope that we have is that our Savior has overcome this world. 00:36:15.000 |
We are not bound to the suffering of this world. It is temporary. 00:36:19.000 |
Again, in Psalm 34, 15, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saved those who are crushed in spirit." 00:36:27.000 |
If you've ever experienced tremendous pain in your life, 00:36:34.000 |
Recently, for whatever reason, we've been having a lot of trials that are coming to our church, 00:36:40.000 |
or members of our church, whether it's with children, or whether it's family members, mother, father. 00:36:50.000 |
If you've ever experienced pain as a Christian, you know exactly what Psalm 34, 15 means. 00:36:58.000 |
Not in theory, not in theology, but from your personal experience. 00:37:02.000 |
What the promise of the presence of God means to you, personally. 00:37:07.000 |
Not just a theological statement, not just a wishful thinking, 00:37:11.000 |
but the actual presence of God when He says, "I am near to those who are brokenhearted." 00:37:16.000 |
When you are weeping, and there is no consoling, there's no words, there's no friend, 00:37:23.000 |
there's no family member that can take away that pain, 00:37:27.000 |
when you sense the presence of God and His promise and what He has done. 00:37:32.000 |
The best that we can do is distract you, to temporarily cover over some of that pain. 00:37:41.000 |
because He's the only one who can promise and actually carry it out. 00:37:46.000 |
In the middle of your pain, I can say, "I'll be with you. 00:37:51.000 |
Call me when you need me. I'll come running if you need me." 00:37:54.000 |
I can tell you that, but I can't guarantee that, 00:37:58.000 |
because something else might happen in my life. 00:38:02.000 |
I may not be here tomorrow. I may change my mind. 00:38:06.000 |
Maybe something that you said bothered me, and I just changed my mind. 00:38:11.000 |
No amount of human comfort will bring satisfaction to somebody who is truly weeping and mourning. 00:38:18.000 |
And He says, "God promises us that those who mourn in the kingdom of God, they will laugh." 00:38:26.000 |
Revelation 21, verse 4 says, "And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, 00:38:30.000 |
and there will no longer be any death, there will no longer be any mourning, 00:38:34.000 |
or crying, or pain. The first things have passed away." 00:38:38.000 |
I want to share three things that every Christian will experience, 00:38:44.000 |
or should experience, in mourning and weeping. 00:38:48.000 |
One, we mourn simply because we live in this fallen world. 00:38:53.000 |
We experience pain like everybody else. We lose loved ones like everybody else. 00:38:58.000 |
We have hardships like everybody else. We sense rejection like everybody else. 00:39:03.000 |
Disappointment. In Genesis 3, 16-17, it outlines that you will suffer in life. 00:39:10.000 |
Every human being that is born in this world, because of the fall of man, you will suffer in life. 00:39:17.000 |
He says to the woman who was created for the purpose of being a suitable helper, 00:39:22.000 |
that she's going to bring child into this world and raise them in much pain. 00:39:28.000 |
She was meant to be a suitable helper, but they said that you're going to desire your husband, 00:39:33.000 |
meaning you're going to desire to conquer your husband. 00:39:37.000 |
So you're going to experience the hardship of having a relationship with another sinner. 00:39:43.000 |
And that, I don't know anybody who doesn't experience that. 00:39:46.000 |
Even the best of marriages, depending on when you ask them, 00:39:51.000 |
they'll tell you how difficult it is to build a healthy marriage. 00:39:57.000 |
And the Bible says this came as a result of our sins. 00:40:01.000 |
To the men, he says, you will work night and day, toil all day, 00:40:05.000 |
and at the end of it, you're going to experience, it's going to produce thorns and thistles. 00:40:10.000 |
And at the end of that, you're just going to die. 00:40:15.000 |
Every human being is going to experience the hardship. 00:40:20.000 |
At some point in your life, if not now, but at some point in your life, 00:40:24.000 |
if you are working full time, you probably asked yourself, is this it? 00:40:31.000 |
You thought, maybe I should have been a pastor. 00:40:36.000 |
Or maybe if I was a lawyer, I should have been a doctor. 00:40:39.000 |
Or maybe if I'm a businessman, I should have been an engineer. 00:40:42.000 |
I don't know anybody who wakes up in the morning thinking, 00:40:54.000 |
Majority of you, it's the dread of like, I got to work, I got to do this, I got to labor, I got to pay the bills. 00:41:02.000 |
Well, the Bible says that this is what you're going to experience. 00:41:04.000 |
That's not what God intended, but it says your labor and the frustration that comes from that labor 00:41:18.000 |
Every single human being that lives on this earth will experience the result of that fall. 00:41:25.000 |
In Psalm 90, verse 8, it says, "As for the days of our life, they contain 70 years, 00:41:33.000 |
Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for soon it is gone and we fly away." 00:41:38.000 |
For Christians, the hardest part of our existence is now. 00:41:44.000 |
The hardest part of our life is now, because we're still in this flesh. 00:41:50.000 |
And because we're living the ramification of the fall of mankind, and we're still part of that, 00:41:55.000 |
until we're fully delivered in our glorified body. 00:41:59.000 |
So for a Christian, no matter how hard, no matter how difficult it may be, 00:42:04.000 |
we struggle and we mourn in the context of the hope that Christ will bring. 00:42:12.000 |
We eagerly wait for Him, because life is hard. 00:42:18.000 |
What are you looking forward to when heaven is already here? 00:42:22.000 |
But heaven is not here. You know it's not here. 00:42:25.000 |
But we don't suffer like the rest of the world. 00:42:28.000 |
Though we suffer, though we cry, though we mourn, there is hope for Christians. 00:42:33.000 |
And that's what He means. "Blessed are those who mourn now." 00:42:37.000 |
And that mourning will turn to laughter when Christ comes. 00:42:41.000 |
The second reason why Christians mourn, we mourn because of our sins. 00:42:48.000 |
Typically, we would normally think that the blessing of God is rejoice, laugh, be thankful. 00:42:59.000 |
But there are instances where He calls us to do exactly the opposite. 00:43:07.000 |
That's not my words. That's the Bible. I'm reading the Bible. 00:43:15.000 |
Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom." 00:43:29.000 |
There's nothing you can do to make Him happier with you 00:43:32.000 |
because you've been covered by the blood of Christ. 00:43:34.000 |
And yes, there's a part of what we understand in the gospel for that to be true. 00:43:39.000 |
But the Bible also calls us to experience this life. 00:43:46.000 |
The path to life isn't just raising your hand and walking down the aisle. 00:43:50.000 |
The path to true rejoicing is the path of repentance. 00:43:55.000 |
And when we repent, when we truly repent, and we meet Christ, 00:44:00.000 |
He says life is at the other side of the cross. 00:44:06.000 |
That if you are rejoicing while you are compromised, 00:44:12.000 |
if you are seeking life while you are toying with sin, 00:44:17.000 |
if you think something is off because I just don't feel good, 00:44:25.000 |
but you're not trying to fix what you're doing that is causing that, 00:44:31.000 |
all you are seeking is a superficial smile on your face without the blessing of God. 00:44:41.000 |
You're not supposed to rejoice if you're caught in sin. 00:44:45.000 |
You're not supposed to go and laugh when you have unconfessed sins. 00:44:51.000 |
In 1 Corinthians 5, 2, it says, "You have become arrogant," 00:44:55.000 |
because Paul is addressing the Corinthian church. 00:44:58.000 |
Because of their spiritual pride, they're comparing who's better than others, 00:45:08.000 |
they were allowing all kinds of sins to come into the church. 00:45:11.000 |
And there's this one particular sin that he points out. 00:45:13.000 |
There's a young man who is having physical, sexual relations with his mother, it says. 00:45:20.000 |
Now, most commentaries will twist that a little bit and say, 00:45:29.000 |
No, not mother-in-law, sorry, stepmother, right? 00:45:32.000 |
Most commentators will say, "Oh, he married another person, 00:45:35.000 |
and that's why they're able to have physical relations," 00:45:37.000 |
and because they can't fathom the sin that is so grotesque that this was happening. 00:45:45.000 |
It could be that, but the Bible doesn't specify. 00:45:48.000 |
All he says is this sin is so grotesque that not even the pagans are practicing this, 00:45:58.000 |
And this is what he says, 1 Corinthians 5, 2, 00:46:00.000 |
"You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, 00:46:03.000 |
so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst." 00:46:15.000 |
If you don't deal with this sin, and this is where he says, 00:46:17.000 |
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you?" 00:46:22.000 |
In other words, if you don't deal with this, if you sweep this under the rug, 00:46:28.000 |
One of the harshest, most difficult letters that he writes. 00:46:32.000 |
The follow-up letter in 2 Corinthians 7, 8-10, this is what he says, 00:46:37.000 |
"For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it." 00:46:49.000 |
He said, "I regret it, though I didn't regret it, but I did regret it." 00:46:55.000 |
I think this is so perfect because this is exactly how we feel when we discipline our kids. 00:47:06.000 |
He said, "I regretted it because I caused pain, but I didn't regret it." 00:47:11.000 |
If you ask a parent, any parent who disciplines a child, 00:47:14.000 |
and you inflict pain upon that child, he said, "I didn't regret it, but I did regret it." 00:47:19.000 |
I think it's just an honest expression of how Paul felt when he had to write that letter rebuking them. 00:47:25.000 |
"For I see that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while." 00:47:31.000 |
But he says, "I now rejoice, not that you are made sorrowful, 00:47:34.000 |
but that you are made sorrowful to the point of repentance. 00:47:37.000 |
For you are made sorrowful according to the will of God, 00:47:40.000 |
so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 00:47:44.000 |
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces repentance without regret." 00:47:51.000 |
"For sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, 00:47:56.000 |
leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death." 00:48:03.000 |
When we try to fill our lives with superficial laughter, superficial joy, 00:48:14.000 |
You know, fill our lives, because we think somehow that if there's sadness in our life, 00:48:19.000 |
for whatever the reason, that this is not good. 00:48:23.000 |
We try to protect ourselves. We try to protect our children. 00:48:27.000 |
We don't want our children to be sad. We don't want our children to suffer. 00:48:32.000 |
We don't want, I mean, we don't want our children to experience the suffering that we've suffered, 00:48:41.000 |
But anybody who raises children knows that sooner or later, you come to a point, 00:48:45.000 |
you realize you don't have control over that. 00:48:48.000 |
As much as you and I are living in a fallen world, so are they. 00:48:52.000 |
And because of that, every suffering that we've suffered, 00:48:56.000 |
they will also at some point experience that suffering. 00:49:00.000 |
The pain that you've experienced, they will also experience that pain. 00:49:04.000 |
But the problem of having resources like you and I do, 00:49:08.000 |
is that we think that if we manipulate the circumstance, 00:49:12.000 |
if we fill them and surround them with friends and family and activity, 00:49:19.000 |
that we can prevent somehow the suffering that they will experience. 00:49:25.000 |
As a result of that, we may be raising children who have no idea how to endure suffering. 00:49:36.000 |
I know some of you guys may be offended by that word, but pansy is just a plant. 00:49:40.000 |
It's just a flower that withers of any sign of difficulty. 00:49:48.000 |
Pansy will die if you don't give it enough sunlight. Pansy will die if you give too much sunlight. 00:49:53.000 |
A pansy will die if you water it too much, if you don't water it enough, 00:49:57.000 |
if the ground isn't tilled, if you don't pay attention, if it's in the sun too long. 00:50:05.000 |
If you look outside, we have snake plants outside. 00:50:10.000 |
Not the prettiest. Pansies are pretty nice looking, but they die. 00:50:14.000 |
But the snake plants, not the prettiest, but they will not die. 00:50:20.000 |
From our past experience, our pastors are not good at taking care of plants. 00:50:28.000 |
Every plant that we were responsible for at some point died. 00:50:32.000 |
So we came to the conclusion that we have to, only plants that are going to survive in our hands are the ones that we can't kill. 00:50:41.000 |
Imagine living in a culture where we are convinced that laughing and having fun and joy is the purpose of life. 00:50:53.000 |
And we try so hard to prevent any kind of sorrow. 00:50:58.000 |
And as a result of that, even repentance is rejected. 00:51:03.000 |
When a church or the Bible study or preaching causes somebody to feel guilty, it's like, "That's legalism. 00:51:12.000 |
The church is actually advertising, "If you come, you're going to feel uplifted. You're going to be encouraged." 00:51:18.000 |
And so the call to repentance has been dying down. 00:51:28.000 |
He says, "Even though I regret it for a little while, I'll call you to sorrow." 00:51:33.000 |
He said, "Now I rejoice, not that you are made sorrowful, but that you are made sorrowful to the point of repentance." 00:51:39.000 |
And at the end, he says, "Leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death." 00:51:45.000 |
Third and finally, we mourn because of the suffering of others. 00:51:53.000 |
If you really want to understand the heart of God, not just the mind of God, not just the letter of God, 00:52:00.000 |
if you really want to understand the heart of God, ask God to teach you to learn to mourn for other people's pain. 00:52:11.000 |
That he would open your eyes so that you can understand why he sent his only begotten son. 00:52:17.000 |
There is no Christian, no matter how well things are going, how obedient your children are, 00:52:23.000 |

It was shocking. One of the most shocking news outside of Kobe passing away. 00:53:01.000 |
But I remember people talking about how tragic it is that he can't play basketball. 00:53:06.000 |
How tragic it is that he had AIDS and his career was cut short because he had AIDS. 00:53:13.000 |
But in the midst of that, I thought something was strange. 00:53:16.000 |
That even the Christians were concerned more about his basketball career than his salvation. 00:53:23.000 |
That even if he played out and he was declared to be the greatest player to have ever lived, 00:53:29.000 |
and became a multi-billionaire, and he lived to a ripe old age of 100, 00:53:40.000 |
For Christians to value what the world values is completely inconsistent with what we profess to believe. 00:53:49.000 |
Learning to mourn for other people's suffering is fellowship with Christ. 00:53:56.000 |
Because the only reason why Jesus suffered is because he placed himself in that position. 00:54:02.000 |
In Ecclesiastes 7, 2-4 it says, "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting." 00:54:08.000 |
Because that is the end of every man and the living takes it to heart. 00:54:24.000 |
You ever hear that from any other book of wisdom? 00:54:33.000 |
Only reason why somebody can say that is because there's something better coming after that. 00:54:38.000 |

But if you really want to understand the heart of God, pray that God would open your eyes 00:55:30.000 |

Pray that God would soften your heart, that you would weep for the lost, 00:55:38.000 |
like you weep for your children, like you weep for your family members and your close friends. 00:55:45.000 |

I asked her, "What's going on? What are you confessing?" 00:56:51.000 |
But she said, "I didn't want to know because if I took a close look at what was happening, 00:56:59.000 |

It was in the background, but she never really paid much attention to it. 00:57:08.000 |
But when she finally did, she realized how self-centered her life was. 00:57:18.000 |
I repent of my ignorance because I chose it on purpose." 00:57:23.000 |
Oftentimes, we don't know about the suffering of others 00:57:30.000 |
because I've got enough things to worry about. 00:57:36.000 |
You can understand the mind of God, but you will never understand the heart of God. 00:57:40.000 |
What would cause a holy God, perfect in existence, 00:57:46.000 |

That's why when we see Jesus in front of Lazarus' tomb, we don't understand. 00:58:25.000 |
You went there knowing that He's going to die, 00:58:30.000 |
and yet at the presence of His tomb, with a friend who is dead, 00:58:34.000 |
He was weeping like any other human being would. 00:58:47.000 |
He predicted all of that, and yet He wept over Israel. 00:58:56.000 |
The only reason the Scripture gives us why He did what He did 00:59:11.000 |
it is not just the steps that we're supposed to take. 00:59:14.000 |
It's not just the path that we're supposed to take. 00:59:17.000 |
If we don't understand His heart, you won't understand His words either. 00:59:22.000 |
If you don't understand what compelled them to come, 00:59:25.000 |

Why wouldn't you do everything to get more money, you weirdo? 01:01:32.000 |

Are you already tired working 40, 60, some of you 80 hours a week, 01:01:44.000 |
and then you come to church and you clean up the church? 01:01:53.000 |
You're babysitting kids without pay every week? 01:02:15.000 |
It's like, "Oh, hey, we're going to go clean up the church next week. 01:02:23.000 |
We had a brother today who was fixing a toilet. 01:02:28.000 |
If we had a plumber come out here and do that for us, 01:02:31.000 |
that's minimum $200, $300, just every time a toilet breaks, 01:02:37.000 |
Somebody's car breaks, somebody's picking up people. 01:02:50.000 |
"Are you going over there and teach English for free? 01:02:54.000 |
You're spending thousands of your own money to go to a country 01:02:57.000 |
where you're uncomfortable, you don't speak the language, 01:02:59.000 |
and you're going to teach English to a bunch of people who don't know you for free?" 01:03:08.000 |
To the world, the more we look like Christians, the more weird we are. 01:03:15.000 |
And so we get into danger when we try to avoid that like a plague. 01:03:20.000 |
The very nature of who God called us to be stands out like a sore thumb 01:03:28.000 |
Either you will influence the darkness and light will be turned on, 01:03:32.000 |
or you will avoid the darkness so that it will remain dark, 01:03:42.000 |
He says, "Everything that we are called to do is to go against the tide." 01:03:48.000 |
There's a saying that even a dead dog can swim with the tide. 01:03:56.000 |
Even a dead dog can swim with the tide because you don't need to do anything. 01:04:00.000 |
Only a living dog will swim against the tide. 01:04:06.000 |
Only one who is living and has the Holy Spirit inside of us, 01:04:11.000 |
working, changing, challenging, and sanctifying 01:04:15.000 |
will even make an effort to swim against the tide. 01:04:21.000 |

And that's why the scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 3, 12, 01:05:39.000 |
"Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." 01:05:47.000 |
You know, the current day statistic is 1 in 8 in the world, 01:05:52.000 |
1 in 8 Christians in the world is facing some sort of persecution. 01:06:01.000 |
2 in 5 in Asia practice their Christian faith in the midst of intense persecution. 01:06:10.000 |
That's why right now the world mission is concentrated in Asia 01:06:15.000 |
But in the context of opposition, the churches are being strengthened. 01:06:20.000 |
And the people who are being persecuted, who are hated and ostracized, 01:06:25.000 |
who are having a hard time feeding their children, 01:06:27.000 |
they're the ones who are advancing the gospel in this area. 01:06:31.000 |
The people who are living their life and every decision that they make 01:06:34.000 |
is to make their life easier, we're just in the stands applauding them. 01:06:40.000 |
But we don't know the joy that comes with walking with Christ, 01:06:47.000 |
Blessed are those, blessed are those who rejoices, 01:06:55.000 |
He says, Acts 14, 22, "Strengthening the souls of the disciples, 01:06:59.000 |
we encourage them to continue in the faith, saying, 01:07:01.000 |
'Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.'" 01:07:10.000 |
"They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, 01:07:13.000 |
but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you 01:07:16.000 |
to think that he is offering service to God." 01:07:21.000 |
Primary opposition to the gospel is within the church. 01:07:27.000 |
As much as we say the atheists, and as much as we say the politics, 01:07:30.000 |
and the school systems, and all of these things are in opposition to the gospel, 01:07:35.000 |
but the greatest opposition to the gospel are false Christians. 01:07:41.000 |
The greatest opposition who actually hate us-- 01:07:44.000 |
I mean, from your own personal experience, right? 01:07:52.000 |
Are they the ones who are in your house debating with you? 01:08:01.000 |
and they asked me to speak, you know, preach the gospel. 01:08:08.000 |
where they were getting non-Christians to come to hear the gospel. 01:08:12.000 |
And I was preaching, and in the preaching I shared 01:08:16.000 |
regularly on campus at UCI sharing the gospel. 01:08:19.000 |
Probably about twice a week I was on campus sharing the gospel. 01:08:27.000 |
He said, "Hey, Pastor Peter, why do you do that?" 01:08:33.000 |
He said, "No, go out on the street and share the gospel." 01:08:40.000 |
And he said--this is literally what he said--he said, "You make us look bad." 01:08:47.000 |
He said that the non-Christians are going to think we're weird. 01:08:51.000 |
That you are out there trying to share the gospel with people. 01:08:58.000 |
And I remember thinking, "This guy's a leader." 01:09:12.000 |
are either nominal Christians, who may not be Christians, 01:09:16.000 |
or liberal Christians, who we know for sure they're not Christians. 01:09:29.000 |
The ones who preach the false gospel, they are the ones who will ostracize you, slander you. 01:09:35.000 |
Because the type of Christianity that they want to build, 01:09:38.000 |
the type of church that they want to build, we stand in their way. 01:09:44.000 |
Paul, when he gives his credential for his apostleship, 01:09:53.000 |
The whole letter of 2 Corinthians is written to defend his apostleship, 01:09:56.000 |
because they didn't like what he said in 1 Corinthians. 01:09:59.000 |
So the people who are offended, they say, "That guy's not an apostle, he's a latecomer." 01:10:04.000 |
"I remember that guy used to come and try to kill us, and all of a sudden, 01:10:17.000 |
"Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. 01:10:21.000 |
Are they servants of Christ? I speak as insane." 01:10:26.000 |
And then he says, "I more so, in far more labors, in far more imprisonment, 01:10:30.000 |
beaten times, without number, often in danger of death. 01:10:35.000 |
Five times I received from the Jews 39 lashes." 01:10:41.000 |
Because they deemed if you get whipped 40 times, you'll die. 01:10:45.000 |
So 39 is the harshest punishment that you can get without a death sentence. 01:10:53.000 |
Can you imagine what Apostle Paul's back must have looked like? 01:10:59.000 |
39 times, five separate times he was whipped to the point of death. 01:11:03.000 |
"Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned three times. 01:11:06.000 |
I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I spent in the deep. 01:11:09.000 |
I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers of rivers, dangers of robbers, 01:11:13.000 |
dangers of my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, 01:11:16.000 |
dangers in the wilderness, dangers in the sea, dangers among false brethren." 01:11:24.000 |
"I have been labor and hardship through many sleepless nights, 01:11:28.000 |
in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure, 01:11:34.000 |
There is a daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches, 01:11:38.000 |
who is weak without my being weak, who is led into sin without my intense concern." 01:11:50.000 |
If the gospel was presented by this man, "Follow me as I follow Christ." 01:11:57.000 |
He said, "Follow me as I follow Christ, as I go to Orange County, right? 01:12:03.000 |
Take care of my children, the bills are paid. Follow me as I follow Christ." 01:12:08.000 |
You know, Christianity in China, part of the reason why it was flourishing 01:12:14.000 |
when it was open, was because Americans came representing money. 01:12:21.000 |
So a lot of the students thought that if they became a Christian, 01:12:25.000 |
that they would be blessed like the Americans, that they would have money. 01:12:30.000 |
So if we follow these people, we'll have the privilege that they have. 01:12:36.000 |
So I remember talking to an underground church leader, 01:12:39.000 |
and he said that the doctrine that is spreading like wildfire 01:12:44.000 |
is the health and wealth gospel, Kenneth Copeland. 01:12:47.000 |
He said they were using that material, Kenneth Copeland. 01:12:49.000 |
Kenneth Copeland is one of the key health and wealth gospel guys, 01:12:52.000 |
and I asked him, "What percentage of the underground church is being taught with this material?" 01:12:59.000 |
And he said, "I don't know the exact number, but it's huge." 01:13:06.000 |
They're embracing Christianity because they think that if they follow Christ, 01:13:16.000 |
They'll have money, privilege, safety, bless our country, 01:13:27.000 |
Who would follow if this man said, if he brought the gospel, 01:13:31.000 |
and he said, "If you want to follow Christ, follow me, and here's my credential." 01:13:43.000 |
"If you want to come after me, you also pick up your cross and deny yourself and come after me." 01:13:49.000 |
The Christianity that you and I have accepted and created, 01:13:54.000 |
and sometimes even propagate, doesn't look like the gospel in the Bible. 01:14:02.000 |
It doesn't look like the gospel that Jesus preached. 01:14:05.000 |
It doesn't look like the gospel that Paul preached. 01:14:11.000 |
In fact, this is one of my favorite passages in Galatians. 01:14:16.000 |
Paul ends the letter to the Galatians by saying, Galatians 6, 17, 01:14:20.000 |
"From now on, let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand marks of Jesus." 01:14:35.000 |
He said, "If you want to test me to see if I'm a true follower of Christ, 01:14:54.000 |
How much of our experience in our walk with God 01:15:00.000 |
is because we try to create a Christianity without suffering? 01:15:09.000 |
We want to raise our children where they're not going to experience the crying and weeping 01:15:17.000 |
And as a result of that, what ends up happening? 01:15:49.000 |
Wither because somebody didn't invite me to a party? 01:15:52.000 |
Wither because we don't have a certain program? 01:16:01.000 |
A church that has been raised without understanding 01:16:06.000 |
that suffering for Christ is our sanctification. 01:16:12.000 |
Now, I remember giving this message years ago as a youth pastor. 01:16:18.000 |
And one of the girls after that was convicted and she came up and asked for prayer. 01:16:23.000 |
And she said, "Can you pray for me that God will bring suffering in my life?" 01:16:30.000 |
I said, "You don't need to ask for suffering. 01:16:41.000 |
I said, "But you don't need to ask for suffering." 01:16:45.000 |
I'm going to pray that there will be weeping and mourning in my life. 01:17:07.000 |
If you follow Christ, if you follow the footsteps of Christ, suffering will come. 01:17:15.000 |
If you say what He says, rejection will come. 01:17:20.000 |
If you do everything He tells you to do, hardship will come. 01:17:43.000 |
The greatest place of joy in life is at the center of the will of God. 01:17:51.000 |
When He invites us to life, it's not superficial smile that we put on our face 01:17:59.000 |
by filling any kind of void that we have with something that's going to make us happy for the moment, 01:18:05.000 |
whether it's watching TV or movies or going somewhere or eating something or hanging out at Disneyland. 01:18:17.000 |
And as long as we feel, as long as we don't have reasons to mourn, we think things are good. 01:18:23.000 |
But what it's producing, what it's producing, and I would tell you right now, I mean, let me give you something, you know, in confession. 01:18:35.000 |
After raising four kids, you know, now that we're experimented with the three, and then now we have the fourth one, 01:18:41.000 |
everything that we learned, right, that we didn't do perfectly, natural instinct as a parent is to provide what's best for the kids. 01:18:57.000 |
If the other kids have things, I don't want them going to school and being with the kids and being a weird kid, 01:19:02.000 |
doesn't have the right shoes and doesn't have the right haircut, doesn't have the games and the phone that other kids have. 01:19:08.000 |
And so our natural instinct is we don't want them to be ostracized. 01:19:14.000 |
After years looking back at it now, how much of that instinct hurts the kids? 01:19:29.000 |
And as a result of that, they don't know how to hurt. 01:19:37.000 |
If we're not careful, the best thing that we can do for our children is to walk with Christ faithfully and have them follow you on that path. 01:19:50.000 |
That's the best thing that you can do for your children. 01:19:53.000 |
Walk faithfully in following Christ, and whatever comes with that, let them follow you on that path. 01:20:03.000 |
Blessed are those who are poor. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst. 01:20:08.000 |
Blessed are those who weep. Blessed are those who are rejected in this world. 01:20:31.000 |
And again, I want to remind everyone that the communion table is for baptized believers in the church. 01:20:37.000 |
We ask that you would come up, get your elements, and then go back to your seats. 01:20:42.000 |
If you have unconfessed sins, this is the time that you want to confess and ask for forgiveness. 01:20:48.000 |
If you have not been baptized, we ask that you would stay in your seats and come talk to one of the leaders. 01:20:55.000 |
If you have never confessed your faith in Christ and you don't know him, 01:20:59.000 |
