00:05:58.220 | Oh my son, and all that's within me praises, the stone of my soul, and forget not who he is.
00:06:19.220 | As a father shows compassion to his beloved children, so the Lord shows compassion to us, to those who fear.
00:06:43.400 | As far as the east is from the west, so far have you taken your buses from us.
00:07:02.400 | And it's high as the heavens are over the earth, so great is your step of God.
00:07:14.400 | As far as the east is from the west, so far have you taken your buses from us.
00:07:30.400 | As far as the east is from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west.
00:07:46.400 | As far as the east is from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west, so far have you taken your buses from the west.
00:08:02.400 | Let me get a few announcements before we get started.
00:08:05.400 | First of all, our FAM245, if you are a husband who's been married for three years or less, this ministry event is for you.
00:08:15.400 | There's going to be a light hike, I'm told, from 7:30 to 7:30, and then afterwards there's going to be a teaching on biblical manhood by Pastor Sung.
00:08:27.400 | And so, please come and join that, and it's happening this Saturday, and the sign up today, this is the last call to sign up, so please sign up.
00:08:36.400 | As you're going outside, you'll see a sign up table outside, or you could do it online, but please do it as soon as possible if you are planning to come to that.
00:08:43.400 | Also, the dating seminar is happening that same Saturday at 2:00 p.m. through 5:00 p.m. in the main sanctuary.
00:08:49.400 | So, again, this is the last call to sign up, so if you're planning to come, please sign up for that.
00:08:54.400 | As you exit, there will be a sign up table outside, and there's going to be three sessions.
00:09:00.400 | One is on the biblical view of dating, and then second is how to choose.
00:09:05.400 | What are some things that you should be looking for in your husband or wife or a possible partner?
00:09:10.400 | And then there's an open Q&A that we will have on the third session.
00:09:14.400 | So please sign up for that if you are planning to come. Today is the last call, so if you're planning to come, please sign up.
00:09:20.400 | Outreach Volleyball Park Day. Our outreach team is hosting an outreach park day.
00:09:26.400 | So if you have family, friends, co-workers that you want to bring in the context of sharing the gospel, our team and others will be there to be able to play volleyball in a casual setting to have conversations about who Christ is.
00:09:39.400 | And so it's been very fruitful in the past. So our outreach team members and Pastor Mark has been doing a great job leading this team.
00:09:47.400 | So if you're able to come and bring somebody to participate in that, please sign up for that. And that's happening on March 22nd.
00:09:55.400 | And finally, there's a band park day. If you're part of this ministry on March 29th at 2 p.m. at Tustin Sports Park.
00:10:02.400 | There's going to be some group games to help with. Again, there's a growing ministry here with a lot of singles who are coming to church.
00:10:09.400 | And it's an opportunity to get to know other people to find a community here. And Pastor Nate will be giving a word of encouragement.
00:10:17.400 | The cost of this event with all the all the things that are going on with with activities is going to be five dollars.
00:10:24.400 | So please sign up for that as well. OK. All right. Let me pray for our offering time.
00:10:29.400 | And then if you are visiting us and you have a physical check or physical offering, we do have an offering box in the back.
00:10:35.400 | Then after our main pray set, our sister Irene Kim is going to come and give our testimony and be baptized this morning.
00:10:41.400 | So let's pray.
00:10:49.400 | Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for your mercies and your perseverance with us, knowing how easily we get distracted, how we easily covet the things of this world.
00:11:01.400 | Help us to see a greater and greater vision of your glory, Father God, in our lives, that all that we do would be a simple reflection of the mighty work in us.
00:11:11.400 | Thank you for the privilege to be able to gather together with our community, to be able to worship you, to honor you, to sing praises to you.
00:11:20.400 | And I pray that it would be more than just giving of our time, but our very hearts to you.
00:11:25.400 | I pray that even in this offering that you would help us to give intentionally as an act of worship.
00:11:32.400 | May your name be glorified and honor in our midst. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
00:11:37.400 | Amen.
00:11:39.400 | Thank you.
00:12:09.380 | Let us all rise and spend a few moments to greet the neighbors around us.

00:14:09.440 | of crucifixion, fountains open deep and wide. Through the floodgates of God's mercy,
00:14:21.040 | flood of lights and gracious time. Grace and love like mighty rivers, poured in sassum
00:14:34.040 | from above. Heaven's peace and perfect justice. Kiss the guilty world in love.
00:14:50.260 | Here is love. Here is love, the conquered evil. Christ the first born from the grave.
00:15:02.640 | Death has failed to be found equal to the light of Him who sings. In the valley of darkness,
00:15:17.420 | dawn is everlasting love. Perfect love and glorious brilliance has repelt as selfish love.
00:15:31.240 | No love is higher. No love is higher. No love is wider. No love is deeper. No love is truer.
00:15:59.860 | No love is higher. No love is wider. No love is higher. No love is wider. No love is deeper.
00:16:16.760 | No love is higher, no love is wider, no love is like your love alone.
00:16:27.700 | No love is higher, no love is wider, no love is deeper, no love is truer.
00:16:38.960 | No love is higher, no love is wider, no love is like your love alone.
00:16:50.460 | Here is love, blessed as the heavens, countless as the stars above.
00:16:59.400 | All the souls that He has ransomed, precious are the treasured souls.
00:17:10.960 | We are called to feast forever, on our love beyond our tongue.
00:17:20.720 | Glorious Father, Son, and Spirit, now with man are entered's mind.
00:17:32.000 | Christ our wisdom, we are humbled, when you hide your ways from us.
00:17:51.660 | You have purposes unnumbered, each one good and glorious.
00:18:00.960 | Help us trust when we grow weary.
00:18:06.620 | Free us from our anxious thoughts.
00:18:11.140 | Give us grace to see more clearly.
00:18:16.420 | You are God, and we are God.
00:18:21.180 | Christ our wisdom, be our gladness.
00:18:33.700 | When we fail to understand.
00:18:37.660 | You ordain all joy and sadness.
00:18:43.140 | To fulfill your perfect purpose.
00:18:48.600 | Help us know you rule with power over every raging flood.
00:18:57.500 | In our most uncertain hour, you are God, and we are loved.
00:19:07.560 | You are God, and we are God, and we are God, and we are love, and we are God, and we are God.
00:19:15.900 | God, and we are God, and we are God, and we are God, and we are God, and we are God, and we are God.
00:19:24.800 | As we journey through the shadows, grant us faith where science stands.

00:20:08.560 | For the beauty of the grace
00:20:13.560 | Once in foolishness we scorned you
00:20:18.560 | But your blood has breathed us
00:20:23.560 | Help us sing thee in those mercies
00:20:28.560 | Of your humble heart to say
00:20:32.560 | Christ our wisdom, Christ our goal
00:20:38.320 | You are God forever praised
00:20:42.320 | Help us sing thee in those mercies
00:20:47.320 | Of your humble heart to say
00:20:52.320 | Christ our wisdom, Christ our glory
00:20:57.320 | You are God forever praised
00:21:03.320 | You may be seated
00:21:05.320 | Hello everyone my name is Irene and this is my testimony
00:21:17.320 | I grew up in a Christian family precisely as both a pastor's kid PK and missionary's kid MK
00:21:24.320 | Although I officially accepted Christ at a young age
00:21:27.320 | At the time I did not truly understand how much of a sinner I was
00:21:30.320 | Growing up I had anger and resentment towards church and God
00:21:33.320 | Going through some life circumstances there were many times where I felt helpless and not in control of my life
00:21:38.320 | I decided to build out what I believed was my own identity or my own strength
00:21:42.320 | I also decided that I would not only stop relying or trusting the people around me but also God
00:21:47.320 | I was determined to always do things on my own without God or anybody around me
00:21:52.320 | Whenever I was struggling or going through some difficult periods
00:21:54.320 | Rather than going to God I would always tell myself to just take it get over it and get through it on my own
00:21:59.320 | I made myself believe that if I was unable to handle things with my own strength and intelligence
00:22:04.320 | Then I was weak and pretty much worthless
00:22:06.320 | I was stubborn and refused to rely on God
00:22:08.320 | The combination of having the survival mindset and emphasis on self-sufficiency made me a callous and cold person
00:22:14.320 | It was very difficult for me to feel emotions
00:22:16.320 | I was very apathetic and jaded towards others
00:22:18.320 | Having no remorse for any hurtful things I said or did
00:22:21.320 | Nor did I feel empathy towards other people
00:22:23.320 | As I carried this mentality and endured various life challenges
00:22:27.320 | I continued to build walls around myself
00:22:29.320 | Furthering myself away from God
00:22:31.320 | I knew he was calling for me
00:22:33.320 | But I was stubborn and wanted to be my own person who could do things on her own
00:22:37.320 | I grew further away from God and started to go down a very dark path
00:22:40.320 | After I entered the military I continued to go through various life problems without turning to God
00:22:45.320 | My sense of identity in a military career and personal ambitions made me ignorant and foolish as I continued to defy him
00:22:51.320 | However, everything began to accumulate and affect my physical and mental health
00:22:55.320 | Eventually, I reached a breaking point in my life where I realized I had to fully surrender to God
00:23:01.320 | As you can tell I tend to learn lessons the hard way
00:23:03.320 | If I can sub up my epiphanies is
00:23:05.320 | First, I am weak and I'm very unworthy
00:23:07.320 | All those moments in my life I thought I'm on my own so I'll do this on my own
00:23:11.320 | But actually God was always there
00:23:13.320 | Second Corinthians 12:9-10
00:23:15.320 | But he said to me my grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness
00:23:21.320 | Therefore, I'll boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me
00:23:27.320 | I realized God is sovereign
00:23:29.320 | It is only through his grace and mercy that he has provided strength and been there every step of the way
00:23:33.320 | Second, my identity is that I am a daughter of God
00:23:37.320 | I'm not defined by my failures, sins, or sufferings
00:23:40.320 | Despite of my brokenness, God sent his only son to die for my sins
00:23:43.320 | I'm unworthy and undeserving yet God chose me and brought me to him
00:23:48.320 | While I'm still a work in progress and definitely still a sinner
00:23:51.320 | I remind myself that my life is not mine
00:23:54.320 | And God is sovereign above all things
00:23:56.320 | Despite of my weakness and unworthiness and brokenness
00:23:59.320 | I have confidence that during my short time in this world
00:24:02.320 | God will continue to give me strength to live a life that is for him and his glory alone
00:24:06.320 | Thank you
00:24:07.320 | I mean, do you understand when you're going into the water, you're being united to Christ's death
00:24:27.320 | And when you're coming out, you're being united to Christ's death
00:24:30.320 | And I baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit
00:24:36.320 | All right, thank you Irene for that great testimony
00:24:54.320 | And the Kim clan and the Chu clan to come and support her
00:24:58.320 | If you can turn your Bibles with me to Luke chapter 10
00:25:03.320 | And I'll be reading from verse 30 to 37
00:25:08.320 | Luke chapter 10 verse 30 through 37
00:25:11.320 | Reading out of the NASB
00:25:13.320 | Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers
00:25:21.320 | And they stripped him and beat him and went away, leaving him half dead
00:25:25.320 | And by chance a priest was going down on that road
00:25:28.320 | And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side
00:25:31.320 | Likewise the Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side
00:25:36.320 | But a Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion
00:25:41.320 | And came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them
00:25:46.320 | And he put him on his own beasts and brought him to an inn and took care of him
00:25:51.320 | On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeepers and said, "Take care of him
00:25:56.320 | And whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you
00:26:00.320 | Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"
00:26:06.320 | And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him."
00:26:09.320 | Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
00:26:11.320 | Let's pray.
00:26:12.320 | Heavenly Father, we pray that your word would be anointed
00:26:21.320 | And that what we hear is not man's word, but yours
00:26:25.320 | That your sheep may recognize that it is your voice
00:26:28.320 | That we may listen, we may obey and follow
00:26:32.320 | In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
00:26:35.320 | As you guys know, our theme this year, if you look in the back
00:26:43.320 | Devote yourself to prayer
00:26:46.320 | And that's a theme that we want to have and continue to push
00:26:49.320 | And we were at a conference this week where the speakers
00:26:53.320 | Like, heavily emphasized the necessity of prayer
00:26:56.320 | So I was really encouraged and challenged by that
00:26:58.320 | But part of the reason why prayer is so important
00:27:01.320 | Is because sometimes even in the study of the Bible
00:27:04.320 | It can produce pride in us
00:27:06.320 | And I don't know anything that
00:27:08.320 | Again, the years that I've been doing ministry
00:27:10.320 | Where you can see where this particular characteristic is going to lead
00:27:18.320 | And I would say probably on the top of that list is pride
00:27:22.320 | If you recognize pride, whether you're young or middle age or older
00:27:27.320 | You know that there is trials and difficulties that immediately surround them
00:27:32.320 | I don't even have to talk to you, I can already tell
00:27:35.320 | That there's probably all kinds of conflicts that you're dealing with
00:27:38.320 | All kinds of interpersonal relationship with your children or with your wife
00:27:43.320 | And so much is dedicated in the Bible about pride
00:27:48.320 | In Proverbs 16:18 it says pride ultimately leads to destruction
00:27:53.320 | In James 4:6 it says that God opposes the proud
00:27:56.320 | God actively opposes those who are proud
00:28:00.320 | And the Bible tells us that pride
00:28:04.320 | Separates us ultimately from God
00:28:06.320 | Pride gives us a critical spirit
00:28:08.320 | Pride keeps us from loving others
00:28:11.320 | And ultimately pride keeps us from our sanctification
00:28:15.320 | You're not teachable
00:28:18.320 | And so whatever you were
00:28:20.320 | Whatever you struggled with in the past
00:28:22.320 | Just gets worse as time goes by
00:28:24.320 | And especially if you're young
00:28:26.320 | You know, if you're young
00:28:28.320 | And you haven't achieved anything yet
00:28:30.320 | You're just starting out in life
00:28:32.320 | And you have pride
00:28:34.320 | You know, the destruction that's going to come upon your life
00:28:37.320 | Because of that pride
00:28:38.320 | Because you're unteachable
00:28:39.320 | And you can understand when somebody gets older
00:28:42.320 | And they've achieved success
00:28:45.320 | They become very wealthy
00:28:46.320 | And you have to fight to resist that pride
00:28:49.320 | But if pride is in you early on
00:28:51.320 | Before you achieve anything
00:28:53.320 | Imagine what's going to happen if you are successful
00:28:56.320 | The greatest thing that can happen to you
00:28:58.320 | If you're a young man and you're proud
00:29:00.320 | Is to fail
00:29:01.320 | Is to fail miserably
00:29:03.320 | Because that pride will get in the way of everything else that you're pursuing
00:29:07.320 | The reason why I'm pounding on this this morning is because
00:29:10.320 | Here's a young man, a lawyer
00:29:12.320 | I don't know if he's young or not
00:29:14.320 | But he's a lawyer that comes to Jesus
00:29:16.320 | And he's standing before the Son of God
00:29:18.320 | He's standing before the Son of God
00:29:21.320 | And he comes and after
00:29:22.320 | Jesus gives all the evidence necessary
00:29:25.320 | To prove that he is the Son of God
00:29:29.320 | He's the Messiah that they've been waiting for hundreds of years
00:29:32.320 | And he comes to him not to ask him question
00:29:35.320 | Not so to learn
00:29:36.320 | But he says to test him
00:29:38.320 | To test him
00:29:39.320 | To see if he can get get the answer right
00:29:42.320 | And then at the end after he answers the question
00:29:46.320 | He says he asked who's my neighbor to justify himself
00:29:52.320 | How can he be this blind
00:29:54.320 | They spent all their lives studying the Bible
00:29:58.320 | Studying the law
00:29:59.320 | And trying to obey the law
00:30:01.320 | At least in their perspective
00:30:02.320 | And yet the Son of God is standing right before him
00:30:05.320 | With all the evidence
00:30:06.320 | All of his powers
00:30:08.320 | All of his words
00:30:09.320 | Speaking with authority
00:30:10.320 | And everything that was prophesied about Jesus
00:30:13.320 | One by one he was checking off the list
00:30:15.320 | And then he comes to Jesus
00:30:18.320 | Trying to test him
00:30:20.320 | Justify himself
00:30:21.320 | How can he be so blind?
00:30:23.320 | We may look at that and say
00:30:25.320 | Well that's hard to understand
00:30:26.320 | How they could have missed him
00:30:28.320 | How can you be so blind?
00:30:32.320 | Could this happen to us?
00:30:34.320 | If you're sitting here thinking like
00:30:36.320 | That would never happen to me
00:30:37.320 | If Jesus showed up
00:30:39.320 | And I was in front of him
00:30:40.320 | And I saw the miracles and the power
00:30:42.320 | I would never be that blind
00:30:44.320 | Are you sure?
00:30:46.320 | That at the end of our life
00:30:49.320 | He says
00:30:50.320 | Everything that you've done
00:30:51.320 | You call me Lord, Lord
00:30:52.320 | But your heart was far from me
00:30:53.320 | How many people who are in the church
00:30:57.320 | Actively serving
00:30:59.320 | Actively worshiping
00:31:01.320 | Actively participating
00:31:02.320 | Maybe even leaders in the church
00:31:04.320 | When Christ comes
00:31:06.320 | This had nothing to do with me
00:31:08.320 | What made him so blind?
00:31:13.320 | Well, Jesus is telling this story
00:31:15.320 | Because he's trying to help this man
00:31:17.320 | To see his blind spot
00:31:20.320 | And hopefully by
00:31:22.320 | His revelation of trying to reveal the blind spot
00:31:25.320 | That it may be to help us to see
00:31:27.320 | Certain blind spots that we have
00:31:29.320 | So there's three things that I want to show you
00:31:31.320 | That Jesus is trying to help this man see
00:31:33.320 | One is
00:31:34.320 | Sometimes our religious pursuit can blind us from the ministry
00:31:37.320 | That is right in front of us
00:31:39.320 | Sometimes we have a rubric of understanding of how I want to serve God
00:31:44.320 | And that rubric, that vision or that thought, that heart, that passion that you have
00:31:50.320 | Sometimes can blind us to the ministry that is right in front of us
00:31:55.320 | Jesus begins this story
00:31:57.320 | Again, this is a
00:31:59.320 | He's trying to answer this question
00:32:01.320 | Who is my neighbor to justify himself?
00:32:03.320 | And Jesus tells the story
00:32:04.320 | Again, this is a parable
00:32:06.320 | He's not describing a particular scene
00:32:08.320 | He's not describing history
00:32:10.320 | This is a made up story
00:32:12.320 | And so we have to pay attention
00:32:15.320 | Because he deliberately exaggerates certain things to make a point
00:32:18.320 | He begins by saying that this man is coming back from his journey from Jerusalem to Jericho
00:32:24.320 | Now this road is about 20 some miles from Jerusalem to Jericho
00:32:29.320 | And it's known to be a very windy road through the desert to the wilderness
00:32:33.320 | And there's parts of it where there's caves that are hidden inside
00:32:37.320 | And typically a lot of business people would travel this road with a lot of money that they made when they were in the big city
00:32:45.320 | And so it was a prime target of robbers to come and jump
00:32:48.320 | And so Jesus is using what was already known at that time
00:32:52.320 | To illustrate that here's this man
00:32:54.320 | And he doesn't tell us who he is or what he's done
00:32:57.320 | But we're just assuming that he may have some wealth and these robbers jumped him
00:33:01.320 | And Jesus describes the scene where he is jumped
00:33:05.320 | And it almost exaggerates
00:33:07.320 | He was robbed, stripped naked, beaten, and left for dead
00:33:11.320 | Now again, this is a parable
00:33:13.320 | This is a parable
00:33:14.320 | So he's describing for us, not just somebody who was hungry or was in need
00:33:20.320 | This guy was left half dead
00:33:22.320 | He was desperate
00:33:24.320 | So he's picturing a person that if you don't help him, he may die
00:33:29.320 | And Jesus deliberately describes him that way
00:33:32.320 | In order to set up for what he's trying to convey
00:33:37.320 | Now here's this man who was robbed, stripped naked, beaten, left for dead
00:33:41.320 | And then there's two people that come on the scene that just ignores him
00:33:44.320 | The first one is the priest
00:33:46.320 | Now priests, as you guys know, are the people who are serving at the temple
00:33:52.320 | Typically at that time, they were divided into groups, 24 groups
00:33:56.320 | So every six months, no matter what group that you were a part of
00:34:00.320 | You served there for one week at a time
00:34:02.320 | And so you would serve, and then you would go back home for a period
00:34:07.320 | Until there was a big festival, then all the priests were required
00:34:10.320 | But typically throughout the Jewish calendar, you would be there every six months for one week
00:34:16.320 | But again, this was common knowledge of all the Jews
00:34:18.320 | So when Jesus says, here's a priest coming back from Jerusalem
00:34:21.320 | We're already assuming that he spent the week serving at the temple
00:34:24.320 | Which was the religious highlight for the priests
00:34:27.320 | This is when he probably felt the most, you know, most holy
00:34:31.320 | And typically with pastors, you know, you speak at a big conference, you come back, you did something great
00:34:37.320 | And you know, you have things to tell your people when you come back
00:34:41.320 | And that's probably, he's describing an individual who's coming back from a big event in his life
00:34:46.320 | Coming back and people are probably asking him, what was it like at the temple?
00:34:50.320 | How many people did you serve? What kind of sacrifices?
00:34:53.320 | So Jesus deliberately chooses a man that people looked up
00:34:57.320 | And that man was a righteous, righteous man
00:35:01.320 | Because not anybody can be at the temple and serve
00:35:05.320 | And then the second man, he describes a Levite
00:35:08.320 | Levite didn't necessarily serve directly like the priest
00:35:11.320 | But they were doing the support work
00:35:13.320 | So all priests were from the Levite tribe
00:35:15.320 | But not all Levites were priests
00:35:17.320 | But he describes another group of people
00:35:20.320 | A person that probably served for a period
00:35:23.320 | To do support work for the priest
00:35:25.320 | And they're coming back
00:35:26.320 | But both groups are coming back from their religious activity
00:35:31.320 | From Jerusalem, possibly back home to Jericho
00:35:33.320 | And Jesus describes them this way
00:35:36.320 | He sees this man who's desperate, left for dead, naked
00:35:39.320 | There's no way to miss this man
00:35:41.320 | He's not just sitting on the side, sulking
00:35:43.320 | He's not just sad, he's not just hungry
00:35:45.320 | He's beaten, he's naked
00:35:48.320 | And he's left for dead
00:35:50.320 | They see him, and it says
00:35:52.320 | He passed him by on the other side
00:35:54.320 | And that's how he describes both of them
00:35:58.320 | But this was not just like
00:35:59.320 | They were just walking by and they didn't stop
00:36:01.320 | They actually crossed the other side
00:36:03.320 | So they don't have to encounter him
00:36:05.320 | And so they just ignored him
00:36:08.320 | And keep on going
00:36:10.320 | Now, like I said
00:36:12.320 | Jesus made up this story
00:36:14.320 | To make a point
00:36:16.320 | Because this lawyer asked
00:36:18.320 | "Well, who's my neighbor?"
00:36:20.320 | To justify himself
00:36:21.320 | And he said, "Here's these guys
00:36:23.320 | That all the Jews look up to
00:36:26.320 | And here's a clear encounter with this man
00:36:28.320 | Who was desperately in need
00:36:30.320 | But in the context of their religious pursuit
00:36:33.320 | They were completely blind
00:36:35.320 | And they just pass him by
00:36:38.320 | Sometimes
00:36:41.320 | In our pursuit
00:36:43.320 | Of wanting to serve God
00:36:45.320 | That we're completely blind to the needs
00:36:48.320 | Right in front of us
00:36:49.320 | Every once in a while
00:36:51.320 | Somebody would come to church and say
00:36:53.320 | You know what?
00:36:54.320 | I don't want to come to Berean
00:36:55.320 | Because there's no opportunity to serve
00:36:58.320 | You know?
00:37:00.320 | And I know what they mean by that
00:37:02.320 | When they say there's no opportunity to serve
00:37:04.320 | Meaning like, oh, you know
00:37:06.320 | I want to go to a church where they can preach
00:37:07.320 | And teach and lead
00:37:09.320 | And typically when they ask me that
00:37:11.320 | And I said, "Oh, our bathrooms are dirty
00:37:13.320 | You know what I mean?
00:37:15.320 | Did you see the trash on the ground?
00:37:18.320 | I want to get people to support and help out
00:37:19.320 | And, you know, cook and clean
00:37:21.320 | And there's plenty of opportunity to serve
00:37:24.320 | And because the church is growing
00:37:25.320 | The need is growing also
00:37:27.320 | But I know that that's not what they mean
00:37:29.320 | They want an opportunity to stand
00:37:32.320 | And do something significant
00:37:35.320 | And in the context of wanting what they think is significant
00:37:39.320 | They don't realize there's people sitting next to them
00:37:43.320 | They may not be Christians
00:37:44.320 | There's people even in this room
00:37:46.320 | Who are suffering today
00:37:47.320 | There's some people who've lost their loved ones
00:37:50.320 | There's some people who are grieving
00:37:51.320 | Some people who are having financial problems
00:37:53.320 | There are people who are grieving
00:37:55.320 | There's ministry all around you constantly
00:37:57.320 | But because we get so fixated on what we think ministry is
00:38:01.320 | Until that happens
00:38:03.320 | Until I get a title
00:38:04.320 | Until I get an invitation to do something
00:38:07.320 | What we think is significant
00:38:10.320 | We're not engaged in the ministry that is right around us
00:38:12.320 | And that's what Jesus is trying to point out
00:38:14.320 | Here's these guys who spent the whole week serving God
00:38:16.320 | And then here's a real need that was sitting right in front of them
00:38:19.320 | That they encounter
00:38:21.320 | And they deliberately cross the street to avoid Him
00:38:23.320 | Sometimes our pursuits can blind us
00:38:29.320 | And Jesus was constantly pointing this out to the Jews
00:38:35.320 | In Matthew Mark 7:5-13
00:38:37.320 | It says
00:38:38.320 | You blind guides
00:38:40.320 | You hypocrites
00:38:41.320 | So you dedicate a certain amount of money
00:38:44.320 | To Corban
00:38:45.320 | Meaning it was dedicated to the temple
00:38:47.320 | And because it was dedicated to the temple
00:38:49.320 | We don't have enough money to take care of our mom and dad
00:38:51.320 | And so you ignore the weightier law
00:38:54.320 | To honor your father and mother
00:38:56.320 | In other words
00:38:57.320 | You obey one law
00:38:58.320 | And then you dismiss the other law
00:39:00.320 | Because this is more convenient for you
00:39:04.320 | You know as you guys know
00:39:05.320 | My younger brother who's an elder at our church
00:39:07.320 | And he's a lawyer
00:39:09.320 | And then one of the phrase that he would use
00:39:12.320 | Not to say that he does that
00:39:14.320 | But he said that the lawyers use is
00:39:16.320 | We massage the law
00:39:18.320 | Because laws cannot be broken
00:39:20.320 | If it's there
00:39:21.320 | I mean the whole profession of lawyers
00:39:24.320 | Is to find what the law is
00:39:26.320 | And to apply and you argue the law
00:39:28.320 | Which is legal, which is not legal
00:39:31.320 | Sometimes you have to massage the law
00:39:32.320 | You can't break the law
00:39:33.320 | You can't change the law
00:39:34.320 | You can't change the law
00:39:34.320 | They don't have that power
00:39:35.320 | But you can massage the law
00:39:37.320 | Emphasize certain laws
00:39:39.320 | And kind of go through the background
00:39:41.320 | And excuse yourself
00:39:43.320 | And he says so
00:39:45.320 | A good lawyer is a good massage therapist
00:39:47.320 | Because they're constantly massaging
00:39:49.320 | They're using the law for their benefit
00:39:51.320 | Jesus was constantly rebuking the Jews for massaging the law
00:39:58.320 | They emphasize what is convenient to them
00:40:01.320 | And then they kind of sweep under the rug
00:40:03.320 | The things that bothered them
00:40:04.320 | That they didn't want to do
00:40:06.320 | He says the same thing in Matthew 23, 23, 24
00:40:09.320 | I'm not going to read the whole thing for the sake of time
00:40:11.320 | He says you're so concerned about tithing mint and dill and cumin
00:40:16.320 | But when it comes to weightier laws of justice, mercy and faithfulness
00:40:20.320 | You completely neglect it
00:40:23.320 | In other words, you hold on to, as a badge of honor
00:40:27.320 | The things that come easy to you
00:40:29.320 | But things that are difficult, you completely ignore
00:40:32.320 | You blind guide
00:40:33.320 | You strain out the gnat and swallow the camel
00:40:35.320 | James says the same thing in 2:15-17
00:40:39.320 | You brothers or sisters without clothing and need of daily food
00:40:43.320 | And one of you says to him, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled
00:40:47.320 | And yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body
00:40:51.320 | And it reduces that
00:40:52.320 | Even so, faith without works is dead
00:40:54.320 | Being by itself
00:40:55.320 | So you can talk
00:40:57.320 | Anybody can talk
00:40:58.320 | Anybody can talk
00:40:59.320 | But this is the heart of God
00:41:02.320 | Galatians 5:6
00:41:04.320 | For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything
00:41:08.320 | But faith working through what?
00:41:10.320 | Love
00:41:11.320 | Faith working through love
00:41:14.320 | Ephesians 4:15
00:41:17.320 | After telling us that God has given us apostles
00:41:19.320 | Evangelists
00:41:21.320 | Teachers
00:41:22.320 | Pastors
00:41:23.320 | To the equipping of the saints
00:41:25.320 | So that we may have the truth
00:41:27.320 | So that the church of God will not be tossed back and forth by every wind of doctrine
00:41:32.320 | So he says fight for the truth
00:41:34.320 | But make sure in that fighting that you fight for truth in love
00:41:39.320 | In love
00:41:42.320 | How do you get that?
00:41:43.320 | In 1 Timothy 1:5
00:41:44.320 | He tells Timothy
00:41:46.320 | Fight these men who are bringing false doctrine
00:41:49.320 | Never compromise the truth
00:41:51.320 | Preach the truth in season and out of season
00:41:53.320 | Don't be like these men who are surrounding themselves to tickle their ears
00:41:57.320 | Don't be one of those ear ticklers
00:41:59.320 | But he reminds Timothy in the context of fighting for truth
00:42:04.320 | And he says the goal of our instruction is love
00:42:07.320 | Which comes from a pure heart good conscience and sincere faith
00:42:13.320 | You know in the context of looking for opportunity to serve God
00:42:18.320 | Sometimes we completely miss that you have ministry all around you all the time
00:42:24.320 | All the time
00:42:26.320 | Who's my neighbor?
00:42:29.320 | What he's saying is whoever is in need
00:42:30.320 | Whoever is in need
00:42:32.320 | You don't target and say you know what I have a heart for these people
00:42:35.320 | When God calls us to serve him he doesn't say who do you have a heart for?
00:42:41.320 | Who do you have a heart for?
00:42:43.320 | I have a heart for the young
00:42:45.320 | That's great
00:42:46.320 | But I have a heart for the young and the old
00:42:49.320 | I have a heart for North America
00:42:52.320 | I have a heart for this
00:42:54.320 | That's great you have a heart for that
00:42:56.320 | But our service to God can't be limited by our heart
00:42:59.320 | Because God didn't call us to do what we feel like
00:43:04.320 | You know one of the things that I was really encouraged by
00:43:06.320 | In H.P. Charles he was given a message and he talked about how
00:43:10.320 | When Isaiah was called to the ministry
00:43:13.320 | He didn't say God didn't describe ministry for him and say hey
00:43:17.320 | Who's going to go and do this ministry?
00:43:19.320 | Right?
00:43:20.320 | He didn't God didn't say who's going to go for me to talk to these Israelites
00:43:24.320 | They're stiff-necked
00:43:25.320 | They're not going to listen and until judgment comes who will go?
00:43:27.320 | He said here am I Lord send me
00:43:30.320 | He says no who's going to go and he said here am I send me Lord
00:43:33.320 | And then after he surrenders he said now this is your task
00:43:37.320 | Right?
00:43:39.320 | He surrendered before he ever knew
00:43:42.320 | What assignment?
00:43:44.320 | Because his assignment was not based upon his heart
00:43:46.320 | His assignment was not based upon his passion
00:43:51.320 | His assignment was based upon obedience
00:43:52.320 | So the ministry that can be right next to us
00:43:58.320 | But sometimes our religiousness sometimes are like this is what I desire this is how I want to serve God
00:44:04.320 | And we can completely miss that and be blind
00:44:07.320 | Secondly our own pursuits and priorities can blind us to in how we see spiritual maturity
00:44:14.320 | Part of the reason why they rejected Jesus is because he didn't fit their mold of what
00:44:20.320 | What religious elites look like
00:44:23.320 | Remember when he came into the scene?
00:44:25.320 | Remember one of the first things that they said about Jesus?
00:44:27.320 | He's from Nazareth
00:44:30.320 | No one's going to come out of Nazareth
00:44:34.320 | The Messiah is going to come from a spectacular city
00:44:38.320 | Not from a country town that nobody knows about
00:44:41.320 | Nobody spectacular comes from there
00:44:43.320 | He's from Nazareth
00:44:45.320 | On top of that he comes from a poor family
00:44:49.320 | A young family
00:44:51.320 | We're blue collar workers
00:44:53.320 | He's not connected to any kind of royalty
00:44:56.320 | There's no known scholar who trained him
00:45:00.320 | He grew in obscurity
00:45:03.320 | How can the leader of our nation come from Nazareth
00:45:07.320 | From no notable family background
00:45:11.320 | He has no money
00:45:13.320 | In fact Isaiah tells us that even his appearance wasn't attractive
00:45:18.320 | You know what I mean?
00:45:20.320 | Like some people look like leaders
00:45:23.320 | I mean they just got it together
00:45:25.320 | Just tall, good looking, you know, well built
00:45:29.320 | Particulate and, you know what I mean, athletic
00:45:31.320 | And they're, you know, that guy's a leader
00:45:33.320 | That's why people follow him
00:45:35.320 | Jesus didn't even have that
00:45:37.320 | He didn't fit the mold
00:45:40.320 | So they're describing
00:45:42.320 | These religious priests that everybody thought
00:45:45.320 | The Messiah might come from this group
00:45:48.320 | But those are the guys who are completely blind
00:45:52.320 | He deliberately introduces to us to the Samaritan
00:45:55.320 | Which
00:45:58.320 | Would have been the opposite of what they would have been looking for
00:46:02.320 | Now in order to appreciate
00:46:04.320 | Not just here, but where the Samaritan stood
00:46:07.320 | And the kind of animosity they had together
00:46:09.320 | The Jews and the Samaritans
00:46:11.320 | And why this was so shocking
00:46:13.320 | You kind of have to understand their history
00:46:15.320 | Their animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans
00:46:21.320 | Go over 700 years
00:46:23.320 | 700 years
00:46:25.320 | 700 years
00:46:26.320 | Can you think of two groups in our society
00:46:28.320 | In our generation
00:46:29.320 | That don't like each other
00:46:30.320 | Right?
00:46:31.320 | I'm sure you do
00:46:33.320 | Right now we have two groups that hate each other
00:46:37.320 | Right?
00:46:39.320 | Without me even mentioning
00:46:40.320 | I'm assuming you already know
00:46:42.320 | Right?
00:46:43.320 | The political divide is so sharp
00:46:45.320 | Right?
00:46:46.320 | I mean it's always been sharp
00:46:47.320 | But I mean to the extent
00:46:50.320 | But I can't think of a single thing
00:46:52.320 | That has lasted over a hundred years
00:46:55.320 | 300 years
00:46:57.320 | 700 years
00:46:59.320 | 750 years to be exact
00:47:01.320 | They had animosity toward each other
00:47:03.320 | It lasted that long
00:47:04.320 | And the reason why
00:47:06.320 | This divide happened was
00:47:09.320 | To be seen the Assyrians come and they conquer the ten tribes of Israel
00:47:12.320 | And they take a majority of the people into captivity
00:47:15.320 | And the few that remained in Jerusalem
00:47:17.320 | Ended up intermarrying with the Assyrians who came
00:47:20.320 | And settled there
00:47:22.320 | So they compromised intermarrying, disobeying the law of God
00:47:26.320 | Intermarrying with the Gentiles
00:47:28.320 | And those were the Samaritans
00:47:31.320 | So the Samaritans basically were not Jews
00:47:33.320 | Nor Gentiles
00:47:34.320 | They were kind of a mixed group
00:47:36.320 | But they considered themselves to be Jews
00:47:38.320 | Because historically they're Jews
00:47:40.320 | Well a hundred and so years later
00:47:43.320 | The two other tribes
00:47:45.320 | They get taken into captivity by the Babylonians
00:47:47.320 | The Babylonians are conquered by the Persians
00:47:49.320 | And King Cyrus comes along
00:47:51.320 | Seventy years into their captivity
00:47:53.320 | And he decides to let the Jews go back home
00:47:58.320 | The majority of them end up staying in Babylon
00:48:01.320 | But about 43,000 of them end up packing their bag
00:48:04.320 | A small remnant of them come back to rebuild the temple
00:48:07.320 | In Jerusalem
00:48:08.320 | When they come back
00:48:09.320 | The Samaritans think
00:48:11.320 | Our brothers are coming back
00:48:13.320 | And so we're going to rebuild our nation
00:48:15.320 | And help them with the temple
00:48:17.320 | So that we can rebuild our nation
00:48:20.320 | When they come back
00:48:22.320 | They said Samaritans
00:48:23.320 | They didn't want their help
00:48:24.320 | Because you guys compromised
00:48:25.320 | That's how we got into trouble in the first place
00:48:27.320 | Because we weren't obeying the law
00:48:28.320 | You guys intermarried
00:48:30.320 | You're not true Jews
00:48:32.320 | So they wouldn't let them participate
00:48:34.320 | In the rebuilding of the wall in the temple
00:48:36.320 | And as a result
00:48:38.320 | Instead of helping them
00:48:39.320 | They become antagonists
00:48:40.320 | And they start throwing rocks and stones
00:48:42.320 | Whenever they gathered
00:48:43.320 | So they need to set up a guard
00:48:45.320 | Against the Samaritans
00:48:46.320 | Who were hindering them
00:48:48.320 | From building the temple
00:48:50.320 | But it doesn't end there
00:48:52.320 | After they rebuild the temple
00:48:55.320 | Obviously they're not going to let the Samaritans
00:48:57.320 | Come and worship there
00:48:58.320 | They were throwing rocks at them
00:49:01.320 | When they were building the temple
00:49:03.320 | So what they did was
00:49:04.320 | They changed their theology
00:49:05.320 | God doesn't really want us to have the temple here
00:49:09.320 | So they built their own temple
00:49:11.320 | On Mount Gerizim
00:49:13.320 | And they start changing their theology
00:49:16.320 | They start twisting the Torah
00:49:17.320 | To fit what they wanted
00:49:19.320 | And say this is where God really wanted
00:49:20.320 | And so that's where the divide
00:49:23.320 | The theological divide began to happen
00:49:24.320 | Between the Samaritans and the Jews
00:49:26.320 | And that's why Jesus says in John chapter 4
00:49:28.320 | To the Samaritan woman
00:49:29.320 | You Jews want to
00:49:30.320 | You guys want to worship in this mountain
00:49:32.320 | We worship in that mountain
00:49:33.320 | Which is correct
00:49:34.320 | And Jesus says
00:49:35.320 | There's going to come a time
00:49:36.320 | Where it doesn't matter
00:49:37.320 | Whether it's this mountain or that mountain
00:49:38.320 | God is looking for true worshipers
00:49:40.320 | In spirit and in truth
00:49:42.320 | But he says that because of this
00:49:44.320 | Now hundreds of years go by
00:49:47.320 | And there's an animosity between the Jews
00:49:50.320 | And the Samaritans for hundreds of years
00:49:54.320 | And about 111 BC
00:49:57.320 | The Jews finally had enough
00:49:59.320 | They organized a small army
00:50:02.320 | They attacked this temple in Mount Gerizim
00:50:05.320 | And they lay it to the ground
00:50:06.320 | Not only the temple but the Samaritan villages
00:50:10.320 | So this was about a hundred plus years
00:50:12.320 | Before Jesus showed up
00:50:14.320 | And by the time Jesus is walking
00:50:16.320 | Doing ministry
00:50:17.320 | Their temple is already destroyed
00:50:18.320 | They never were able to rebuild it
00:50:19.320 | So there's this hatred toward these Jews
00:50:23.320 | Not only would they not allow us
00:50:25.320 | To participate in their worship
00:50:27.320 | They destroyed the only temple that they had
00:50:29.320 | And so they couldn't worship anymore
00:50:32.320 | And then Jesus and his disciples were coming through Jerusalem
00:50:35.320 | Or coming through Samaria
00:50:37.320 | And when they found out that they were going to Jerusalem
00:50:38.320 | They said we don't want any part of you
00:50:41.320 | And that's where James and John says
00:50:42.320 | Okay, you know, God's going to bring judgment upon them anyway
00:50:45.320 | So you want me to do it now?
00:50:47.320 | You want me to bring thin thunder and destroy all these people?
00:50:51.320 | I mean you're going to do it in the future anyway, right?
00:50:54.320 | Let's do it now, let's take care of them
00:50:56.320 | And then we'll take care of the Romans later
00:50:59.320 | Tell me what the disciples were thinking
00:51:01.320 | So all of this to show you the context
00:51:05.320 | The animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans
00:51:09.320 | Was not simply that they had different political views
00:51:12.320 | Or they ate strange food
00:51:15.320 | They hated each other
00:51:17.320 | Great, great, great, great grandparents
00:51:20.320 | Hated each other
00:51:22.320 | And religiously they both saw themselves compromised
00:51:27.320 | So if you were to choose
00:51:29.320 | A group of people
00:51:30.320 | That they hated more than anybody else
00:51:33.320 | That the first, if judgment of God came
00:51:35.320 | The first group of people that needed to be judged
00:51:37.320 | Was these people
00:51:39.320 | It is in this context that Jesus says
00:51:43.320 | Here's these priests, these religious leaders of Israel
00:51:45.320 | They completely ignore this man
00:51:47.320 | Who's about to die
00:51:48.320 | And this is what he says in Luke chapter 10:33-36
00:51:52.320 | You notice that when he describes the priests and the Levites
00:51:55.320 | It's like one sentence
00:51:56.320 | They came, they saw him, walked on the other side
00:52:00.320 | Levite came, saw him, walked on the other side
00:52:02.320 | When the description of the Samaritan
00:52:05.320 | Was on a journey, came upon him and saw him
00:52:08.320 | He felt compassion
00:52:09.320 | Came to him, bandaged up his wounds
00:52:11.320 | Pouring oil and the wine on them
00:52:13.320 | And put him on his own beast
00:52:14.320 | Brought him to an inn, took care of him
00:52:17.320 | On the next day
00:52:18.320 | He took two denarii
00:52:19.320 | Gave them to the innkeeper
00:52:20.320 | And said, take care of him
00:52:21.320 | And whatever more you spend
00:52:22.320 | When I return
00:52:23.320 | I will repay you
00:52:24.320 | Which of these three do you
00:52:26.320 | Do you think you proved to be a neighbor?
00:52:27.320 | A whole paragraph is described
00:52:30.320 | About what he does
00:52:32.320 | First thing he says is
00:52:34.320 | He saw him and had compassion
00:52:36.320 | The word literally means deep empathy
00:52:39.320 | Over and over again
00:52:41.320 | The scripture tells us
00:52:43.320 | That Jesus was moved by deep empathy
00:52:46.320 | And he does
00:52:47.320 | Why he sent his only begotten son
00:52:50.320 | Why he fed people
00:52:51.320 | Why he healed them
00:52:52.320 | Mark chapter 1
00:52:54.320 | Healing of the leper
00:52:56.320 | Tells us he had compassion on them
00:52:57.320 | Matthew 20
00:52:59.320 | Healing of the two blind men
00:53:00.320 | It says he had compassion on them
00:53:01.320 | In Matthew 14 and Mark 6
00:53:04.320 | Why did he feed the 5,000?
00:53:06.320 | He said, oh, Jesus was so irritated
00:53:08.320 | Because they were constantly complaining
00:53:10.320 | About the food
00:53:11.320 | He said, no
00:53:12.320 | He saw them hungry
00:53:13.320 | And he said he had compassion on them
00:53:15.320 | Mark chapter 9
00:53:16.320 | The demon possessed boy
00:53:17.320 | He said he responded
00:53:18.320 | Because he had compassion on them
00:53:19.320 | Luke chapter 15
00:53:21.320 | He said when the prodigal son returns
00:53:23.320 | He said the father had compassion on him
00:53:24.320 | Luke chapter 7
00:53:26.320 | He said raising of the widow's son
00:53:27.320 | He said he did it because he had compassion on them
00:53:30.320 | Over and over again
00:53:33.320 | He says everything Jesus did
00:53:35.320 | He did out of compassion
00:53:38.320 | Compassion in latin
00:53:39.320 | Is compati
00:53:40.320 | It basically means with suffering
00:53:43.320 | With passion
00:53:45.320 | Compassion literally just means
00:53:47.320 | To come alongside and suffer with the person who is suffering
00:53:51.320 | That's what that means
00:53:53.320 | I go, I don't have the answer
00:53:55.320 | I don't know what to say to them
00:53:56.320 | So no, compassion simply means you come alongside
00:53:59.320 | And you share the burden
00:54:01.320 | And he said that's exactly what the Samaritan did
00:54:03.320 | When he saw this man who was desperately in need
00:54:06.320 | He had compassion
00:54:08.320 | And because of his compassion
00:54:10.320 | He gets off
00:54:12.320 | Treats his wounds
00:54:13.320 | And he doesn't stop there
00:54:15.320 | He said, you know, I got to go on my journey
00:54:16.320 | He stops there
00:54:18.320 | Gets out of his way
00:54:19.320 | Puts his limp body on the beast that he was on
00:54:22.320 | Takes him to an inn
00:54:24.320 | Gives him two denarii
00:54:26.320 | He lasted maybe about a month
00:54:27.320 | Of care
00:54:29.320 | And he said
00:54:30.320 | And he doesn't do it
00:54:31.320 | I've done everything I could
00:54:32.320 | What can I do?
00:54:32.320 | Now I'm going to go
00:54:33.320 | He says no, I'm going to return
00:54:35.320 | And if month wasn't enough
00:54:36.320 | Whatever you need
00:54:37.320 | I'm going to give to you
00:54:38.320 | So please take care of him
00:54:39.320 | So Jesus is painting a picture
00:54:41.320 | Of a man who completely
00:54:44.320 | Whatever he was doing
00:54:45.320 | Wherever he was going
00:54:47.320 | Whatever he was engaged
00:54:49.320 | He stopped
00:54:50.320 | And he went out of his way
00:54:53.320 | To make sure that he was taken care of
00:54:55.320 | And if he didn't have enough money
00:54:56.320 | And he didn't have enough time
00:54:57.320 | He said, I'm going to return
00:54:58.320 | To make sure
00:54:59.320 | Now Jesus is telling this story
00:55:01.320 | He's not describing an event he saw
00:55:04.320 | He's telling a parable
00:55:06.320 | To make a point
00:55:08.320 | The contrast between these religious leaders
00:55:10.320 | And this Samaritan
00:55:12.320 | That everybody agreed
00:55:13.320 | Needed to be judged
00:55:15.320 | Finally to do away with these people
00:55:17.320 | That's the guy
00:55:18.320 | And he turns and says
00:55:21.320 | Who was a good neighbor?
00:55:24.320 | Not only is Jesus describing the Samaritan
00:55:31.320 | He's basically saying
00:55:33.320 | The Samaritan is closer to God than you
00:55:35.320 | That man that you thought
00:55:38.320 | That is so hideous
00:55:40.320 | And so detestable
00:55:41.320 | You think that when judgment comes
00:55:43.320 | Of course he's going to be the first one to be judged
00:55:46.320 | Actually
00:55:47.320 | It is you
00:55:50.320 | Because you're so blind
00:55:52.320 | You know whenever we look at the Old Testament
00:55:55.320 | We highlight the spectacular stories
00:55:57.320 | Of the judgment of God
00:55:59.320 | About how the fire came and consumed
00:56:02.320 | Adab and Abihu
00:56:04.320 | How the flood came and wiped out the earth
00:56:07.320 | How Jericho fell and he judged them
00:56:10.320 | And so superficially we look at the Old Testament
00:56:12.320 | And said oh God
00:56:13.320 | The Old Testament is a holy God
00:56:15.320 | Who doesn't tolerate evil
00:56:16.320 | Which is true
00:56:18.320 | But because we know the Old Testament by spectacular stories
00:56:22.320 | We don't really get a sense of God
00:56:24.320 | God is so tender and merciful
00:56:30.320 | In fact
00:56:31.320 | More so I would say
00:56:33.320 | In the Old Testament
00:56:35.320 | In the way he deals with Israel
00:56:37.320 | In Deuteronomy chapter 4
00:56:39.320 | 28 through 29
00:56:40.320 | God required
00:56:42.320 | He had all these other mandatory offerings
00:56:45.320 | But one of the offerings that he had
00:56:46.320 | Was every three years that they were to give a tithe
00:56:48.320 | So every year it's about a third
00:56:50.320 | And it was called the poor tithe
00:56:53.320 | And it was dedicated all that money
00:56:57.320 | Every three years
00:56:59.320 | Just so that they can take care of orphans and widows
00:57:01.320 | Why would he care?
00:57:04.320 | You know what I mean?
00:57:05.320 | He's got a larger picture of
00:57:07.320 | Saving the world
00:57:09.320 | His only begotten son
00:57:10.320 | Is going to come
00:57:12.320 | And take away the sin of the world
00:57:13.320 | The world!
00:57:14.320 | And yet in his law
00:57:17.320 | He said
00:57:18.320 | Make sure that you take care of the people
00:57:20.320 | Who can't take care of themselves
00:57:21.320 | And then in Leviticus 19:9-10
00:57:24.320 | He said when you
00:57:25.320 | When you harvest
00:57:27.320 | Make sure that you leave the corner of the harvest
00:57:28.320 | For the homeless
00:57:29.320 | And the needy
00:57:32.320 | And the strangers
00:57:33.320 | When they come into town
00:57:34.320 | And they don't have anywhere to go
00:57:35.320 | And they don't have money to eat
00:57:37.320 | Leave a portion of that
00:57:39.320 | And it was embedded into the law
00:57:41.320 | I mean this is in the context of
00:57:44.320 | Trying to display his glory to the world
00:57:46.320 | Setting up the temple
00:57:48.320 | Establishing his people
00:57:50.320 | People dealing with
00:57:51.320 | Stiff-necked people
00:57:52.320 | Who wouldn't obey him
00:57:53.320 | I mean
00:57:55.320 | Think about the restraint
00:57:57.320 | That God must have
00:57:59.320 | To just not wipe us out
00:58:01.320 | Right?
00:58:03.320 | I mean think about it
00:58:04.320 | When somebody cuts us off on the freeway
00:58:05.320 | You know
00:58:07.320 | You're a good Christian
00:58:08.320 | So you're going to
00:58:08.320 | You know
00:58:09.320 | You're going to suppress your anger
00:58:12.320 | But if you gave full
00:58:14.320 | You know
00:58:15.320 | Full fruit to your anger
00:58:16.320 | He's like
00:58:17.320 | How dare you
00:58:18.320 | Cut me off?
00:58:21.320 | You're tempted
00:58:23.320 | Tempted to cut him off
00:58:26.320 | At least
00:58:29.320 | Imagine the restraint
00:58:30.320 | That you need to show
00:58:31.320 | Even not to give full vent to your anger
00:58:33.320 | Even just somebody accidentally cut you off
00:58:36.320 | Can you imagine
00:58:37.320 | The restraint of our God
00:58:39.320 | After everything he's done
00:58:42.320 | And people keep rebelling against him
00:58:44.320 | Not only is he restraining his anger
00:58:48.320 | He said
00:58:50.320 | Remember the needy people
00:58:51.320 | So strangers they can't eat
00:58:53.320 | Leave that portion just for them
00:58:55.320 | To take care of them
00:58:58.320 | He gave the Ten Commandments
00:58:59.320 | He said
00:59:01.320 | All of the law is summarized by two laws
00:59:03.320 | Love God and love your neighbor
00:59:05.320 | All of it
00:59:07.320 | But he gave teeth
00:59:09.320 | He gave details
00:59:10.320 | So that we know how to apply this
00:59:12.320 | So that we don't use that as an excuse
00:59:14.320 | It's like
00:59:14.320 | Oh I feel love for them
00:59:15.320 | So then you fulfilled it
00:59:16.320 | But this is what love looks like
00:59:18.320 | If you love me you will obey my commandments
00:59:20.320 | But the end product
00:59:23.320 | He says ultimately is love
00:59:26.320 | In fact he goes
00:59:28.320 | Further than that in Matthew 25
00:59:30.320 | And he said
00:59:30.320 | You know
00:59:31.320 | If you have done it unto the least of my brethren
00:59:34.320 | You have done it unto me
00:59:36.320 | You saw the needs of people who are desperate
00:59:39.320 | People who are in dire need
00:59:41.320 | Those who are in prison
00:59:43.320 | Those who are sick
00:59:43.320 | Those who are orphaned and widows
00:59:45.320 | He has done it unto the least of my brethren
00:59:47.320 | The least of the people are people who can't pay you back
00:59:51.320 | These of the people are people who cannot respond
00:59:54.320 | The way you've given
00:59:56.320 | Oftentimes we give and we love people who are lovable
00:59:59.320 | Or
01:00:01.320 | If you're more righteous than that
01:00:03.320 | At least the potential
01:00:05.320 | A potential
01:00:07.320 | Of paying you back in somehow
01:00:09.320 | Maybe they're going to grow
01:00:10.320 | And they're going to become great evangelists
01:00:11.320 | Or maybe they're going to become wealthy one day
01:00:13.320 | Who knows
01:00:15.320 | One of the qualifications of an elder in the scripture is that
01:00:20.320 | He needs to be hospitable
01:00:21.320 | But hospitality literally means the love of strangers
01:00:26.320 | So it's not just having your friends over
01:00:29.320 | You know, you just love to throw parties at your home
01:00:31.320 | So you're a very hospitable person
01:00:33.320 | That's not what the Bible describes as hospitable
01:00:35.320 | Hospitable is somebody that you love, care for, invite
01:00:39.320 | That you would never involve
01:00:42.320 | Because you're doing it for them
01:00:44.320 | You're doing it for them
01:00:46.320 | That was a qualification of an elder
01:00:48.320 | Not somebody that can pay you back
01:00:50.320 | Not somebody who
01:00:51.320 | That you think has potential
01:00:53.320 | But simply because they are in need
01:00:55.320 | And so
01:00:57.320 | After he tells us the story
01:00:59.320 | He says
01:01:00.320 | Which of these do you think proved to be neighbor
01:01:02.320 | To this man
01:01:03.320 | Who fell into the Barber's hand
01:01:05.320 | And the lawyer says
01:01:07.320 | The one who showed mercy toward him
01:01:11.320 | He says go and do likewise
01:01:12.320 | Can you imagine how difficult it must have been for him to say this?
01:01:19.320 | Right?
01:01:21.320 | When God called Jonah to go and tell the Ninevites that
01:01:25.320 | Judgment is going to come unless they repent
01:01:27.320 | And how reluctant he was to say that
01:01:30.320 | I don't think he was preaching with passion
01:01:32.320 | Like I said, I think
01:01:35.320 | I imagine Jonah just kind of quietly walking and whispering
01:01:38.320 | Because he didn't want them to repent
01:01:41.320 | Judgment is coming
01:01:45.320 | If you don't repent, judgment is coming
01:01:49.320 | I assume that that's kind of like what he was doing
01:01:53.320 | He was just doing his job
01:01:55.320 | Because he didn't want them to hear
01:01:57.320 | He didn't want them to repent
01:02:00.320 | Can you imagine this lawyer who spent all of his life
01:02:02.320 | Not only him, but all of his friends
01:02:04.320 | Everybody at the temple
01:02:05.320 | Every priest
01:02:06.320 | Every Levite
01:02:07.320 | Every Jew
01:02:09.320 | If the Messiah comes
01:02:11.320 | Who's going to be judged first?
01:02:13.320 | Samaritans
01:02:15.320 | And then to ask him
01:02:18.320 | Who is the righteous one here?
01:02:20.320 | Can you imagine him?
01:02:24.320 | Okay, Jesus
01:02:25.320 | Clearly it's the Samaritans
01:02:29.320 | I mean, I don't like it, but you know
01:02:31.320 | In fact, not only does Jesus say it here
01:02:34.320 | He repeats this over and over again
01:02:36.320 | In Luke chapter 17
01:02:38.320 | We're told the story about the ten lepers who gets healed
01:02:40.320 | And only one return
01:02:41.320 | To thank him
01:02:43.320 | And then you know what it says?
01:02:45.320 | He was a Samaritan
01:02:47.320 | All the other nine Jews who should have known better
01:02:53.320 | They say, "Oh, I'm healed!"
01:02:54.320 | And they just go off
01:02:56.320 | And the only one that returns
01:02:57.320 | And recognizes the gift that he has
01:02:59.320 | Was a Samaritan
01:03:01.320 | There's one instance where Jesus is amazed by their faith
01:03:05.320 | You know who that was?
01:03:07.320 | In Matthew 8?
01:03:08.320 | A Roman centurion
01:03:10.320 | An enemy of Romans
01:03:12.320 | He said he was amazed by his faith
01:03:16.320 | In fact, just in case you don't get it
01:03:19.320 | Matthew 21:31
01:03:22.320 | Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes
01:03:24.320 | Will get into the kingdom of God before you
01:03:27.320 | Imagine how shocking of a statement that is
01:03:31.320 | To a Jew
01:03:32.320 | The tax collectors and the prostitutes
01:03:36.320 | In their mind are more righteous than you
01:03:38.320 | You spent all your life at the temple
01:03:40.320 | Giving, serving, even proselytizing
01:03:42.320 | Memorizing scripture, praying
01:03:44.320 | Paying tithe
01:03:47.320 | And then Jesus comes on the scene
01:03:48.320 | And he says the prostitutes
01:03:50.320 | The prostitutes and the tax collectors
01:03:54.320 | Are going to be entering the kingdom before you
01:03:56.320 | So imagine that
01:03:58.320 | If you're hearing this as a Jew
01:04:00.320 | Either
01:04:01.320 | He just
01:04:03.320 | He just destroyed
01:04:05.320 | Everything that you live for
01:04:08.320 | Everything that you are holding on to
01:04:11.320 | All the honor that you've created
01:04:14.320 | That you're the religious leader
01:04:16.320 | And it says you are not
01:04:17.320 | You are more blind than they are
01:04:19.320 | Because the tax collector knows his sin
01:04:22.320 | The prostitute knows that he's in desperate need
01:04:25.320 | Of salvation
01:04:26.320 | You do not because of your self-righteousness
01:04:28.320 | You are blind
01:04:31.320 | And that's what he kept on calling
01:04:32.320 | You are blind guides
01:04:33.320 | You are blind guides
01:04:34.320 | You don't really know who I am
01:04:36.320 | He says
01:04:41.320 | And we don't know what the response was
01:04:45.320 | We don't know after he says that
01:04:47.320 | If he actually went and he said
01:04:48.320 | You know what, I repent
01:04:49.320 | So when we are confronted by this truth
01:04:52.320 | Because what Jesus is saying is so shocking
01:04:57.320 | Either
01:04:59.320 | We repent
01:05:01.320 | Like everything that I thought was wrong
01:05:05.320 | Jesus doesn't just come and helps us with our pursuit
01:05:10.320 | That's why this health and wealth gospel is so dangerous
01:05:14.320 | Because all health and wealth gospel do is help you with your sinful pursuit
01:05:20.320 | Help you so that you can gain more honor
01:05:25.320 | Help you for what everything else
01:05:27.320 | Everybody else is pursuing in this world
01:05:28.320 | But you are just doing it in Jesus' name
01:05:30.320 | And it's a false gospel
01:05:32.320 | It's a dangerous gospel
01:05:34.320 | But Jesus comes and confronts them
01:05:36.320 | Either
01:05:37.320 | You believe what he is saying
01:05:39.320 | And you repent
01:05:41.320 | You deny yourself
01:05:43.320 | And you pick up your cross
01:05:44.320 | And you basically start a new life
01:05:47.320 | Or
01:05:48.320 | You got to get rid of this guy
01:05:52.320 | Because the more popular he gets
01:05:55.320 | More difficult he comes for you
01:05:57.320 | More people honor him
01:06:00.320 | More people are not going to honor you
01:06:03.320 | And that's why they crucified him
01:06:06.320 | Those who wouldn't repent
01:06:10.320 | Because their understanding of righteousness
01:06:13.320 | They would not give up
01:06:14.320 | Because they wouldn't
01:06:16.320 | They didn't want to give up themselves
01:06:20.320 | But let me conclude with this
01:06:21.320 | The third and final point
01:06:22.320 | When we're blinded by our own pride
01:06:25.320 | We can easily miss God's ultimate will for us
01:06:29.320 | You know, we're constantly concerned about will
01:06:32.320 | God's will
01:06:33.320 | Should I marry this person or that person?
01:06:35.320 | Should I start this business?
01:06:36.320 | Should I go to this school?
01:06:38.320 | And even though we say it in
01:06:39.320 | Like God's will
01:06:41.320 | But if we're honest with ourselves
01:06:43.320 | We're pursuing our will
01:06:45.320 | In the name of God
01:06:47.320 | Because God's will has been made clear
01:06:50.320 | So
01:06:52.320 | Our struggle with sanctification is
01:06:55.320 | How do I align with the will that he has already revealed?
01:06:59.320 | Not going out and looking for new wills
01:07:01.320 | Right?
01:07:04.320 | Jesus was giving a preview
01:07:07.320 | Of the kingdom of God
01:07:09.320 | That the kingdom of God is going to go from the Jews to the Gentiles
01:07:16.320 | The remotest part of the world
01:07:17.320 | His ultimate plan was never just for the Jews
01:07:21.320 | He chose the Jews
01:07:23.320 | And he said through you I will bless the nation
01:07:25.320 | That was always his plan
01:07:27.320 | Salvation for the world
01:07:28.320 | He was only going to use the Jews to bring that about
01:07:31.320 | But the Jews took that and said
01:07:32.320 | You know since God's using me
01:07:34.320 | It must be about us
01:07:36.320 | It must be about us
01:07:38.320 | In Acts chapter 1:8 it says
01:07:40.320 | When the Holy Spirit comes upon you
01:07:42.320 | You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria
01:07:45.320 | To the remotest part of the world
01:07:46.320 | Because that's the plan of the gospel
01:07:49.320 | That his intention was always to the remotest part of the world
01:07:52.320 | But it's just going to start in Jerusalem
01:07:54.320 | So if you read the outline of the book of Acts
01:07:58.320 | It is the outline of Acts 1:8 being fulfilled
01:08:01.320 | So the first seven chapters is them in Jerusalem
01:08:04.320 | Preaching the gospel
01:08:06.320 | And then Stephen is martyred in chapter 7 by Apostle Paul
01:08:09.320 | And then in chapter 8
01:08:11.320 | Right?
01:08:13.320 | In chapter 8
01:08:15.320 | The Holy Spirit comes upon them
01:08:17.320 | Philip goes out and he's taken into Samaria
01:08:22.320 | So Jerusalem
01:08:23.320 | Right?
01:08:24.320 | Judea
01:08:25.320 | And then to Samaria
01:08:26.320 | He preaches the gospel
01:08:27.320 | And then revival breaks out over there
01:08:30.320 | And then in the same chapter
01:08:32.320 | He runs into the Ethiopian eunuch
01:08:34.320 | Who is a Gentile
01:08:35.320 | And he gets baptized
01:08:37.320 | And then they come
01:08:39.320 | And then Paul converts in chapter 9
01:08:42.320 | Chapter 10
01:08:44.320 | There's a vision
01:08:45.320 | And he says
01:08:46.320 | What I declare to be clean
01:08:47.320 | You should not declare unclean
01:08:50.320 | And then he sends him to Cornelius' house
01:08:52.320 | And a Gentile converts to Christianity
01:08:55.320 | And then revival breaks out
01:08:57.320 | But they don't know what to do with this
01:08:59.320 | Because they thought it was just the Jews
01:09:00.320 | So they have a conference in Jerusalem in chapter 11
01:09:04.320 | What are we to do with this?
01:09:06.320 | How do we understand this?
01:09:07.320 | The kingdom of God is being open
01:09:10.320 | And so they come to the conclusion
01:09:11.320 | Jesus has been telling us this from the beginning
01:09:13.320 | That the gospel was always meant for
01:09:16.320 | Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria
01:09:18.320 | To the remotest part of the world
01:09:19.320 | So they come back
01:09:20.320 | And Apostle Paul and Barnabas
01:09:22.320 | Gets ordained in chapter 13
01:09:23.320 | And they begin their missionary journey
01:09:25.320 | First, second, and third missionary journey
01:09:27.320 | From chapter 13 to chapter 28
01:09:29.320 | So Acts chapter 1:8
01:09:31.320 | Is the outline of the gospel
01:09:34.320 | Going from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria
01:09:36.320 | To the remotest part of the world
01:09:38.320 | But the Jews in their pride
01:09:41.320 | Could not see it
01:09:43.320 | They were completely blind to his will
01:09:47.320 | If we do not understand
01:09:50.320 | What God is doing in our midst
01:09:52.320 | We end up focusing all the attention on us
01:09:56.320 | We evaluate what is good and what is bad
01:09:58.320 | Based upon how it makes us feel
01:10:00.320 | My family is good, my children are good
01:10:03.320 | God so blessed us
01:10:06.320 | Apostle Paul
01:10:07.320 | Even as he is being imprisoned
01:10:08.320 | And ready to be beheaded
01:10:09.320 | Thank God the gospel is being preached
01:10:12.320 | He said, "My only hope is whether by life or death
01:10:15.320 | That I may glorify God
01:10:17.320 | That I may not be ashamed
01:10:19.320 | Because he knew God's will
01:10:21.320 | He knew that the whole reason why he was called
01:10:24.320 | Is not so that he can have a nice life here
01:10:26.320 | Is so that the gospel may reach the remotest part of the world
01:10:30.320 | That the greatest blessing
01:10:32.320 | For every Christian
01:10:34.320 | Is that we would be able to participate
01:10:37.320 | In God's plan
01:10:39.320 | In God's plan
01:10:41.320 | The whole reason why you and I are here
01:10:43.320 | Is not so that you can protect your children
01:10:47.320 | Go to Sunday school
01:10:48.320 | Surrounded by other Christians who love them
01:10:50.320 | Care for them because it's so dangerous out there
01:10:53.320 | That's not why we're gathered
01:10:55.320 | He said we are the light of the world
01:10:58.320 | Who sets a light and puts it under the table
01:11:02.320 | You are the salt of the earth
01:11:04.320 | And if it loses its salt
01:11:05.320 | What good is it other than to be thrown to the ground
01:11:07.320 | To be trampled
01:11:08.320 | When we are blinded by our own passion
01:11:11.320 | Blinded by our own pride
01:11:15.320 | We easily forget what God is doing
01:11:18.320 | Why am I here?
01:11:19.320 | What are we doing?
01:11:21.320 | Everything that you are learning
01:11:24.320 | Everything that you are being trained
01:11:26.320 | All the purpose of fellowship
01:11:27.320 | All you are giving
01:11:28.320 | Is to fulfill His will
01:11:30.320 | That's why Jesus said
01:11:32.320 | When you pray, pray this way
01:11:34.320 | Our Father which art in heaven
01:11:36.320 | Hallowed be your name
01:11:38.320 | Not my name, your name
01:11:39.320 | Your kingdom come
01:11:41.320 | Your will be done
01:11:44.320 | On earth as it is in heaven
01:11:46.320 | Give us this day our daily bread
01:11:49.320 | Forgive us our debts
01:11:51.320 | As we forgive our debtors
01:11:53.320 | For God is the kingdom
01:11:55.320 | And the power and the glory forever and ever
01:11:56.320 | Amen
01:11:57.320 | Pray in this way
01:11:58.320 | That His name, His will, His glory
01:12:01.320 | Is what you and I submit to
01:12:04.320 | And live for
01:12:05.320 | Let's pray
01:12:07.320 | Father, we thank you for your mercies
01:12:20.320 | The things that we know
01:12:22.320 | Things that we are learning
01:12:25.320 | And many things
01:12:28.320 | That are hidden
01:12:30.320 | Help us Lord God to see a greater and greater glimpse of your glory
01:12:36.320 | That we may be changed from one form of sanctification to another
01:12:40.320 | May your name be honored
01:12:43.320 | Worshipped
01:12:45.320 | Obeyed
01:12:47.320 | Glorified
01:12:49.320 | Help us Lord God in our weakness
01:12:53.320 | Search us and know us and see if there's any hurtful ways in us
01:12:58.320 | In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
01:12:59.320 | Let's all stand up for the closing praise.
