00:29:58.520 | idealizing self-recognition and prestige
00:30:02.520 | from extracurriculars and academic achievements.
00:30:05.520 | I relied on external validation from others
00:30:09.520 | just for my self-worth.
00:30:14.520 | But in college, I was introduced to Berean by a friend
00:30:18.520 | and began to participate in Friday nights,
00:30:22.520 | small group discussions, even attending retreat
00:30:26.520 | and other events with college ministry
00:30:28.520 | where I grew more in my knowledge of God.
00:30:32.520 | Up until this point, everything in my life,
00:30:36.520 | like all the decisions I made, were to please myself
00:30:40.520 | and to further my own self-ambition.
00:30:44.520 | I was able to learn more about the gravity of my sin at Berean
00:30:51.520 | to realize that coveting the things of this world
00:30:57.520 | was sin in the first place
00:30:59.520 | and began to look back in my life.
00:31:02.520 | I felt regret,
00:31:05.520 | seeing nothing worth of lasting value.
00:31:08.520 | Then it came to me.
00:31:10.520 | Happiness was always fleeting
00:31:14.520 | because I was not meant to chase after created things.
00:31:18.520 | God, who created me, purposely made me to be a light
00:31:21.520 | in this dark world.
00:31:24.520 | He calls me to let your light shine before men
00:31:29.520 | in such a way that they may see your good works
00:31:33.520 | and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
00:31:36.520 | Matthew 5:16.
00:31:38.520 | Through my own examination of my sin
00:31:41.520 | and how pervasive it is in my life,
00:31:43.520 | affecting my relationships with my family and friends,
00:31:48.520 | this truth began to sink into my heart.
00:31:52.520 | Although I fall short in every single way,
00:31:55.520 | through Christ's ultimate demonstration of love,
00:31:59.520 | crucifixion,
00:32:01.520 | I am now forgiven for my sins that deserve death.
00:32:05.520 | Jesus traded my cynicism for hope,
00:32:08.520 | inspiring me to spread the good news that we, the sinner,
00:32:12.520 | have been redeemed by Jesus, sinless and perfectly good,
00:32:16.520 | who has covered our transgressions on the cross.
00:32:20.520 | However, being surrounded by members
00:32:22.520 | who seem to have faith much stronger than mine,
00:32:25.520 | my pride caused me to think
00:32:27.520 | that I had to earn forgiveness from God,
00:32:30.520 | and I doubted if I was truly saved or not.
00:32:33.520 | With the guidance of several believers,
00:32:35.520 | I learned that this point of view missed the mark.
00:32:39.520 | The strength of my faith is not what matters
00:32:42.520 | as much as the object of my faith,
00:32:45.520 | God, who is always faithful.
00:32:48.520 | Even as I continued to grow in my faith
00:32:51.520 | with a softened heart for God,
00:32:53.520 | there were times where I questioned
00:32:55.520 | the legitimacy of his love,
00:32:57.520 | because to me, love from and for people was conditional.
00:33:02.520 | But with God, we may be disobedient,
00:33:04.520 | but before we even knew him,
00:33:07.520 | he chose to create and love us.
00:33:09.520 | This is how God showed his love among us.
00:33:12.520 | He sent his one and only Son into the world
00:33:15.520 | that we might live through him.
00:33:17.520 | This is love, not that we love God,
00:33:20.520 | but that he loved us and sent his Son
00:33:23.520 | as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
00:33:26.520 | 1 John 4, 9-10.
00:33:29.520 | Now I hope to love others as Jesus loved me first.
00:33:35.520 | [applause]
00:33:45.520 | [no audio]
00:34:13.520 | [applause]
00:34:24.520 | All right, thank you, Amy, for that encouraging testimony.
00:34:27.520 | The rest of us, if we can turn our Bibles to Luke 8.
00:34:31.520 | I'll be reading from verse 26 to verse 31.
00:34:36.520 | Luke 8, verse 26 to 31.
00:34:40.520 | Reading out of the NASB.
00:34:45.520 | "And they said to the country of the Gerasenes,
00:34:48.520 | "which is opposite Galilee,
00:34:50.520 | "when he came out onto the land,
00:34:52.520 | "he was met by a man from the city
00:34:54.520 | "who was possessed with demons,
00:34:56.520 | "and who had not put on any clothing for a long time,
00:34:58.520 | "and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.
00:35:01.520 | "Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before him,
00:35:03.520 | "and said in a loud voice,
00:35:05.520 | "'What business do we have with each other?
00:35:07.520 | "'Jesus, Son of the Most High God,
00:35:09.520 | "'I beg you, do not torment me.'
00:35:11.520 | "For he had commanded the unclean spirit
00:35:13.520 | "to come out of the man.
00:35:15.520 | "For it had seized him many times,
00:35:17.520 | "and he was bound with chains and shackles
00:35:19.520 | "and kept under guard.
00:35:21.520 | "And yet he would break his bonds
00:35:23.520 | "and be driven by the demon into a desert.
00:35:25.520 | "And Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?'
00:35:27.520 | "And he said, 'Legion,'
00:35:29.520 | "for many demons had entered him."
00:35:31.520 | Let's pray.
00:35:37.520 | Lord, we ask for understanding.
00:35:40.520 | We ask for illumination.
00:35:42.520 | We ask for the power of your word to convict us.
00:35:46.520 | I pray that any deception
00:35:48.520 | of the demonic influence, Lord God,
00:35:50.520 | will be cast out by the preaching of your word.
00:35:54.520 | Cause us, Lord God, to see you,
00:35:56.520 | magnify you, to worship you this morning.
00:35:59.520 | In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
00:36:06.520 | If you read the scriptures,
00:36:08.520 | beginning from the book of Genesis,
00:36:11.520 | the start of the Bible of redemptive history
00:36:14.520 | begins with God's creation, as you guys know.
00:36:17.520 | From chapter 1, it outlines for us
00:36:19.520 | that God created first day, second day,
00:36:21.520 | third day, fourth day, fifth day, sixth day.
00:36:24.520 | And then we get to chapter 2,
00:36:26.520 | it tells us how the devil comes into the picture
00:36:29.520 | and he deceives, right, tempts.
00:36:32.520 | And so Eve falls, and then Adam falls.
00:36:34.520 | And as a result of that,
00:36:36.520 | the decay of mankind and creation comes in.
00:36:39.520 | And so as a result of their sin,
00:36:42.520 | what God did not intend in creation
00:36:44.520 | happens specifically to man and the rest of creation.
00:36:48.520 | And the end result of that will ultimately lead to death.
00:36:51.520 | So the progression of what we see in the book of Genesis
00:36:54.520 | and how the fall of man happens is creation,
00:36:58.520 | temptation, demonic temptation,
00:37:01.520 | and then decay, and then death.
00:37:04.520 | That's the order that we see in the book of Genesis.
00:37:07.520 | I don't think it's by mistake
00:37:09.520 | that we look at the text that we're looking at
00:37:12.520 | and we see four encounters
00:37:15.520 | to reveal the power of Christ,
00:37:17.520 | where last week we saw
00:37:19.520 | Jesus' power over creation, over nature.
00:37:23.520 | Today we're going to see Jesus' power over the demonic.
00:37:27.520 | Next session, maybe not next week
00:37:30.520 | because we have part two from this.
00:37:32.520 | Next session is Jesus' authority over disease.
00:37:36.520 | And then the last part of it,
00:37:38.520 | we're going to be discussing Jesus' power over death.
00:37:41.520 | And so all of creation is a reversal
00:37:44.520 | of the curse that mankind entered--
00:37:47.520 | creation, demonic temptation, decay, and then death.
00:37:51.520 | And Christ comes in to reveal His power and authority
00:37:55.520 | over every part of that that has gone wrong.
00:37:58.520 | And the only way that obviously you and I know
00:38:01.520 | is Christ came to suffer for our sins
00:38:04.520 | and to give a remedy, an answer for that sin,
00:38:06.520 | to reverse that curse.
00:38:08.520 | That Christ and Christ alone
00:38:10.520 | is the one who has the authority and power
00:38:12.520 | over the creation, over the demonic,
00:38:14.520 | over the decay,
00:38:16.520 | and ultimately to reverse death to give us life.
00:38:19.520 | Last week we looked at how Jesus,
00:38:22.520 | instantaneously, He rebukes the wind.
00:38:25.520 | He doesn't simply find another way
00:38:27.520 | to get out of this trouble.
00:38:29.520 | This storm wasn't disobedience.
00:38:32.520 | Christ comes, and He rebukes the wind,
00:38:35.520 | and the wind obeys, creation obeys.
00:38:39.520 | Today we're going to look at the demonic encounter
00:38:42.520 | that He has, and we're talking about a man
00:38:45.520 | who has been completely lost for a long period of time.
00:38:49.520 | I'm guessing that many things have been attempted,
00:38:51.520 | but they got to a point where they couldn't,
00:38:53.520 | and he was wreaking havoc
00:38:55.520 | in probably wherever he lived.
00:38:57.520 | Christ comes, and immediately by His presence,
00:39:01.520 | the demons submit.
00:39:04.520 | When it comes to the demonic,
00:39:06.520 | typically it's a mystery.
00:39:09.520 | Much of the image that we have
00:39:11.520 | of the demonic world comes from media,
00:39:14.520 | pictures that you may have seen,
00:39:15.520 | maybe even in church history.
00:39:16.520 | People have drawn pictures of the devil
00:39:19.520 | and the pitchfork and the red costume,
00:39:22.520 | and whatever images that we have
00:39:24.520 | oftentimes come from the media
00:39:26.520 | or the art that you've seen.
00:39:29.520 | But if you look carefully at the Scripture,
00:39:31.520 | the physical presence of demons is not ugly,
00:39:35.520 | and we're going to be looking at that.
00:39:37.520 | We need to have an accurate picture
00:39:39.520 | of who they are and what they are capable of doing,
00:39:42.520 | what it is that they are actually doing
00:39:44.520 | so that we're very aware of what is happening.
00:39:48.520 | C.S. Lewis wrote this about the demonic world.
00:39:50.520 | He said, "There are two equal and opposite errors
00:39:52.520 | "into which our race can fall about the devils.
00:39:55.520 | "One is to disbelieve in their existence.
00:39:58.520 | "The other is to believe and to feel
00:40:00.520 | "an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.
00:40:02.520 | "They themselves are equally pleased
00:40:04.520 | "by both errors and hail a materialist
00:40:06.520 | "and magician with the same delight."
00:40:10.520 | The error is, on one end,
00:40:12.520 | to be so fixated on the demonic
00:40:16.520 | that the demons have much more power
00:40:19.520 | and influence over our lives.
00:40:22.520 | And then you have the opposite,
00:40:24.520 | where it's just a background.
00:40:25.520 | You don't actually even think about it,
00:40:27.520 | unless you have a day like this
00:40:28.520 | where we're talking about the demonic world.
00:40:31.520 | It's not even real.
00:40:33.520 | I've experienced both.
00:40:36.520 | When I first became a Christian,
00:40:37.520 | I became a Christian in the charismatic context,
00:40:40.520 | and so they talked about demons
00:40:43.520 | almost every time any sermon was given.
00:40:45.520 | It was something about the demonic world.
00:40:48.520 | I remember when I became a Christian,
00:40:49.520 | sometime between '83 to '93,
00:40:52.520 | sometime between that period of time,
00:40:54.520 | I could not watch a movie.
00:40:55.520 | I couldn't listen to radio
00:40:57.520 | because everything was demonic.
00:40:59.520 | If you ask me anything that happened
00:41:01.520 | during that period,
00:41:02.520 | I wouldn't be able to tell you.
00:41:04.520 | I was literally living like a monk.
00:41:07.520 | Unless it's Michael Jackson
00:41:08.520 | or somebody very famous,
00:41:10.520 | I don't know exactly culturally
00:41:13.520 | what happened during that period
00:41:14.520 | because everything was demonic.
00:41:17.520 | I remember afraid to wake up
00:41:19.520 | in the middle of the night
00:41:20.520 | thinking that I'm going to encounter
00:41:21.520 | a demon somewhere.
00:41:23.520 | Everywhere it's dark,
00:41:24.520 | everywhere that I felt like
00:41:25.520 | God's presence would be,
00:41:26.520 | the demon would be.
00:41:28.520 | One of the benefits from that
00:41:29.520 | was I was very holy.
00:41:33.520 | I didn't touch anything
00:41:34.520 | that I wasn't sure was from God.
00:41:38.520 | The negative aspect of that
00:41:39.520 | is the demonic world
00:41:40.520 | had a lot of influence over my thought.
00:41:45.520 | I gave it much more power
00:41:46.520 | than what I see in scripture.
00:41:48.520 | Then the other end of it,
00:41:49.520 | I ended up going to
00:41:50.520 | a conservative Bible teaching.
00:41:53.520 | It's not that it's not taught.
00:41:54.520 | Again, it's not their fault.
00:41:56.520 | As I moved away from that,
00:41:58.520 | especially in a context like this
00:42:00.520 | where the Bible is being taught
00:42:02.520 | and we're conservative
00:42:03.520 | and living in the Western culture,
00:42:06.520 | it's kind of mystical.
00:42:07.520 | It's a background figure
00:42:09.520 | that we hear every once in a while,
00:42:11.520 | but it's not a real figure
00:42:13.520 | that we don't actually think about.
00:42:16.520 | It's important for us
00:42:18.520 | that whatever image that we have
00:42:20.520 | of the devil
00:42:22.520 | that is not coming from media,
00:42:24.520 | it's not coming from
00:42:25.520 | some artist's imagination,
00:42:26.520 | or it's not coming from
00:42:27.520 | the secular world,
00:42:28.520 | that we need to accurately know
00:42:29.520 | that we have an enemy
00:42:31.520 | that is constantly trying
00:42:33.520 | to get at us.
00:42:35.520 | Who is he?
00:42:36.520 | What is he doing?
00:42:37.520 | What is his power?
00:42:38.520 | What is his intention?
00:42:39.520 | How are they organized?
00:42:41.520 | And what is it exactly
00:42:42.520 | are they doing now?
00:42:44.520 | Are you being influenced?
00:42:47.520 | Is there a demonic presence
00:42:48.520 | in your life?
00:42:50.520 | Well, we wouldn't know
00:42:51.520 | if we don't pay attention.
00:42:52.520 | So this morning,
00:42:54.520 | as we jump into the text,
00:42:56.520 | and as I told you,
00:42:57.520 | this is going to be
00:42:58.520 | a two-part message,
00:42:59.520 | and today we're going to be
00:43:00.520 | jumping into it,
00:43:01.520 | and then next week
00:43:02.520 | we're going to be talking about
00:43:03.520 | what resulted from it
00:43:04.520 | and what he said to them afterwards.
00:43:07.520 | But we need to have
00:43:08.520 | an accurate view.
00:43:10.520 | And so I want to go over
00:43:12.520 | the powers and the nature
00:43:14.520 | of how they are described
00:43:16.520 | in the Bible.
00:43:17.520 | First and foremost,
00:43:18.520 | we need to understand
00:43:19.520 | that the demonic presence
00:43:21.520 | that we see in the Scripture
00:43:23.520 | is unique
00:43:24.520 | during the life of Christ.
00:43:26.520 | It is a mistake to think
00:43:28.520 | that what we see
00:43:29.520 | during the life of Christ
00:43:30.520 | is what is meant
00:43:32.520 | and what is happening
00:43:34.520 | every single day
00:43:35.520 | because we don't see that
00:43:36.520 | in the Old Testament,
00:43:37.520 | and we don't see that
00:43:38.520 | after Christ leaves.
00:43:40.520 | There is a period
00:43:41.520 | during the apostolic period
00:43:42.520 | where we see mentions of that,
00:43:44.520 | but nothing like
00:43:45.520 | the presence
00:43:46.520 | of the demonic activity
00:43:47.520 | during the three years
00:43:48.520 | of Jesus' ministry.
00:43:50.520 | And we need to recognize that,
00:43:52.520 | that this is not something
00:43:53.520 | that because it happened there,
00:43:54.520 | this is what happens
00:43:55.520 | every single day.
00:43:56.520 | One of the commentators,
00:43:57.520 | I think,
00:43:58.520 | made a very helpful statement,
00:44:01.520 | short statement,
00:44:02.520 | that will help us understand.
00:44:03.520 | He said,
00:44:04.520 | "When Jesus appeared,
00:44:06.520 | all hell broke loose."
00:44:10.520 | When Jesus appeared,
00:44:11.520 | all hell broke loose.
00:44:13.520 | And I think that's
00:44:14.520 | an accurate depiction
00:44:16.520 | of what took place
00:44:17.520 | during Jesus' ministry.
00:44:20.520 | Can you imagine
00:44:22.520 | that the demonic world,
00:44:24.520 | the spiritual world,
00:44:26.520 | I mean,
00:44:27.520 | Jesus is the creator.
00:44:28.520 | He created them,
00:44:29.520 | and the Scripture says
00:44:30.520 | that He did not consider
00:44:31.520 | equality with God
00:44:32.520 | something to be grasped,
00:44:33.520 | and He emptied Himself
00:44:34.520 | of His glory,
00:44:35.520 | for the first time.
00:44:37.520 | First time in their existence,
00:44:39.520 | they're able to see
00:44:40.520 | their creator humbled.
00:44:43.520 | And He seems vulnerable.
00:44:46.520 | So if there's any period of time
00:44:48.520 | where they thought
00:44:49.520 | that maybe if I can tempt Him,
00:44:52.520 | maybe just like Adam and Eve fell,
00:44:54.520 | maybe if He can fall,
00:44:55.520 | I can usurp His authority.
00:44:59.520 | So you can understand
00:45:00.520 | why there was,
00:45:02.520 | why that description,
00:45:03.520 | "All hell broke loose,"
00:45:04.520 | because this was
00:45:05.520 | all hands on deck.
00:45:07.520 | The Son of God is here present
00:45:09.520 | and took on frail human form,
00:45:13.520 | and if we had any possibility
00:45:16.520 | of overthrowing Him,
00:45:17.520 | it would be now.
00:45:19.520 | So what happens
00:45:20.520 | during the three years
00:45:21.520 | of Jesus' ministry
00:45:22.520 | is unique to that period.
00:45:23.520 | It doesn't mean
00:45:24.520 | that the demonic world
00:45:25.520 | is not functioning,
00:45:26.520 | that it's not active,
00:45:27.520 | but we see a heavy concentration
00:45:29.520 | during these three years,
00:45:31.520 | and then we see it again
00:45:32.520 | during His second coming.
00:45:33.520 | We see in the book of Revelation
00:45:34.520 | and other parts where He comes
00:45:36.520 | and the demonic activity
00:45:37.520 | is ramped up again.
00:45:40.520 | So again, we need to understand
00:45:41.520 | that this is not normal,
00:45:44.520 | but at the same time,
00:45:45.520 | then what does the Bible teach us
00:45:47.520 | about the demonic world?
00:45:50.520 | First of all,
00:45:52.520 | the powers of the demonic world.
00:45:55.520 | In the book of Revelation,
00:45:56.520 | in particular chapter 12,
00:45:59.520 | and then later on,
00:46:01.520 | it tells us that when Satan fell,
00:46:04.520 | that most commentators believe
00:46:05.520 | that this is a description
00:46:07.520 | of the fall of the angels,
00:46:09.520 | that a third of the angels
00:46:11.520 | were taken with the dragon,
00:46:14.520 | meaning a third
00:46:15.520 | of all the created angels,
00:46:16.520 | and the Bible doesn't give us
00:46:17.520 | an exact number
00:46:19.520 | of how many angels there were.
00:46:20.520 | All it says,
00:46:21.520 | there were myriads and myriads,
00:46:22.520 | and myriads basically is a number
00:46:24.520 | that they can't physically count,
00:46:27.520 | like the stars, like the sand.
00:46:29.520 | It is so numerous
00:46:30.520 | that they can't count.
00:46:31.520 | So we don't know what one third is.
00:46:33.520 | It just means that there were
00:46:34.520 | too many to count.
00:46:36.520 | That's what the Bible says,
00:46:37.520 | and a third of them fell
00:46:39.520 | along with Satan.
00:46:40.520 | So it's not a small,
00:46:42.520 | concentrated group of demons
00:46:43.520 | that are walking around the earth.
00:46:46.520 | It says there are myriads
00:46:47.520 | and myriads of them.
00:46:51.520 | And it says they're powerful.
00:46:54.520 | Now there's ranking
00:46:56.520 | among the angels.
00:46:59.520 | I don't think they all
00:47:00.520 | have the same power,
00:47:01.520 | but the Bible describes them
00:47:02.520 | as powerful beings.
00:47:04.520 | In fact, Jude verse 9 tells us
00:47:07.520 | that even Archangel Michael,
00:47:09.520 | Archangel Michael,
00:47:10.520 | the highest of the angels
00:47:12.520 | serving God,
00:47:14.520 | would not dare rebuke Satan directly,
00:47:18.520 | but he says,
00:47:19.520 | "The Lord rebuke you."
00:47:21.520 | Not by his own authority,
00:47:23.520 | not by his own power,
00:47:24.520 | but only from God's power,
00:47:26.520 | he says, "Lord, rebuke you."
00:47:28.520 | So in other words,
00:47:29.520 | even he respected its power.
00:47:32.520 | Not respected him,
00:47:33.520 | but respected its power.
00:47:34.520 | So all these angels
00:47:36.520 | were under his command.
00:47:39.520 | And you have to understand
00:47:40.520 | that the angels are organized
00:47:43.520 | like soldiers.
00:47:45.520 | They're not like us.
00:47:47.520 | Even though we are called soldiers,
00:47:48.520 | we're also sheep.
00:47:50.520 | We exist.
00:47:51.520 | We get into trouble.
00:47:52.520 | We wander away.
00:47:54.520 | Our shepherd has to lead us
00:47:55.520 | and guide us.
00:47:56.520 | The angels,
00:47:58.520 | both the good and the bad,
00:47:59.520 | are organized like an army.
00:48:02.520 | And they have a commanding officer
00:48:03.520 | who commands them,
00:48:04.520 | and they are in the context of war.
00:48:08.520 | So that powerful army
00:48:12.520 | is organized by Satan,
00:48:15.520 | and Satan is described
00:48:16.520 | in 2 Corinthians 4:4
00:48:18.520 | as a god of this age.
00:48:21.520 | Now imagine,
00:48:22.520 | the word God in our generation,
00:48:25.520 | when we say God,
00:48:26.520 | what do we mean?
00:48:27.520 | Like, he's god-like.
00:48:28.520 | He's the top, right?
00:48:30.520 | Some people say blasphemously
00:48:32.520 | that Michael Jordan was like God.
00:48:34.520 | I mean, that's blasphemy.
00:48:35.520 | But when people say that,
00:48:36.520 | they're saying there's nothing above him.
00:48:38.520 | There's nothing greater than him.
00:48:39.520 | Nobody is better than him.
00:48:40.520 | That's what they mean by that.
00:48:42.520 | When we use that to refer to our God,
00:48:44.520 | we're talking about the supreme being
00:48:45.520 | who created all things,
00:48:46.520 | had complete sovereignty
00:48:48.520 | over all things.
00:48:50.520 | The fact that the Bible
00:48:51.520 | uses that term
00:48:52.520 | to describe Satan's power
00:48:53.520 | over our generation,
00:48:55.520 | I mean,
00:48:56.520 | we can't exaggerate its power.
00:48:59.520 | Now he's not talking about the world.
00:49:01.520 | The word that is used there
00:49:03.520 | in 2 Corinthians 4:4
00:49:04.520 | is about age.
00:49:06.520 | This age,
00:49:07.520 | meaning its influence,
00:49:08.520 | its culture,
00:49:09.520 | what it values,
00:49:10.520 | what it wants,
00:49:11.520 | what it pursues,
00:49:12.520 | what the world is tempted by.
00:49:14.520 | God of that is Satan.
00:49:17.520 | That's how powerful Satan is.
00:49:20.520 | And that power,
00:49:22.520 | who's the God of this age,
00:49:24.520 | has complete authority
00:49:27.520 | over the fallen world.
00:49:29.520 | So we're not talking about
00:49:31.520 | some loose beings
00:49:33.520 | who are just running around.
00:49:34.520 | They don't know what to do.
00:49:35.520 | It is very organized
00:49:37.520 | under a powerful leader
00:49:39.520 | who has a very specific purpose
00:49:41.520 | that they're carrying out.
00:49:43.520 | Now if you believe any of this stuff,
00:49:46.520 | you should be startled.
00:49:49.520 | Right?
00:49:50.520 | You should be startled.
00:49:52.520 | If a very powerful army
00:49:56.520 | is actively pursuing you,
00:49:58.520 | wouldn't you want to know about it?
00:50:00.520 | Wouldn't you know what their plans are?
00:50:03.520 | Wouldn't you know
00:50:04.520 | where the next plan of attack to you is?
00:50:09.520 | If you know that this exists
00:50:11.520 | and you sit there and say,
00:50:13.520 | "Oh, thank you for that information."
00:50:16.520 | Something has numbed you to the point
00:50:19.520 | where this doesn't seem real
00:50:20.520 | or maybe you just don't believe.
00:50:23.520 | But if you believe this,
00:50:25.520 | it should sober us
00:50:27.520 | because that's how the Bible describes him.
00:50:29.520 | It is very powerful, very organized,
00:50:32.520 | and the head of this
00:50:34.520 | is called the God of this age.
00:50:38.520 | Now what is its purpose?
00:50:40.520 | That's the power.
00:50:41.520 | That's the organization.
00:50:42.520 | That's who they are.
00:50:44.520 | What's the nature of these demons?
00:50:46.520 | Well, in 1 Peter 5:8,
00:50:48.520 | it tells us that we have an enemy,
00:50:50.520 | the devil, like a roaring lion
00:50:52.520 | seeking someone to devour.
00:50:56.520 | Its very nature is to devour.
00:50:59.520 | And that's why at the end
00:51:00.520 | when Jesus confronts these demons,
00:51:02.520 | he says, "Don't cast us out.
00:51:04.520 | And if you are,
00:51:06.520 | let me go into these pigs,
00:51:07.520 | 2,000 pigs,
00:51:09.520 | and let me destroy them
00:51:12.520 | because it's their very nature.
00:51:14.520 | Let me do something."
00:51:16.520 | You know the picture that I get
00:51:17.520 | when Jesus casts these demons out?
00:51:19.520 | It's kind of like somebody who's in rage.
00:51:21.520 | You know what I mean?
00:51:23.520 | And they want to just break something.
00:51:25.520 | Right?
00:51:26.520 | You get so out of control.
00:51:28.520 | You have so much rage.
00:51:30.520 | And I got to take it out on something.
00:51:32.520 | And you punch a wall.
00:51:33.520 | You flip over a table.
00:51:34.520 | That's the picture that we see of the demons.
00:51:36.520 | They were, "Let me carry this out."
00:51:38.520 | This rage,
00:51:40.520 | this destructive nature that they have.
00:51:42.520 | "If you're not going to let me do this to this man,
00:51:44.520 | let me do this to these pigs."
00:51:46.520 | So it reveals to us who they are.
00:51:49.520 | By nature, they want to destroy.
00:51:50.520 | Well, how are they going to destroy?
00:51:52.520 | 1 Kings 22, 23, it says,
00:51:54.520 | "They are deceiving spirits."
00:51:57.520 | And this is the part that we need
00:51:58.520 | to really pay close attention to.
00:52:00.520 | Because the way that they are going to be destructive
00:52:04.520 | is by deceiving spirits.
00:52:07.520 | In fact, in John 8, 44,
00:52:10.520 | the devil is called the father of lies.
00:52:15.520 | He's a father of deception.
00:52:18.520 | So the way he will destroy
00:52:21.520 | is through deception.
00:52:24.520 | And how is this deception going to come?
00:52:26.520 | In 2 Corinthians 11, 14-15,
00:52:28.520 | that they will come disguised as angel of light.
00:52:33.520 | As angel of light.
00:52:37.520 | All right, let me stop right here
00:52:39.520 | just so that you help us understand what this means.
00:52:43.520 | As much as we are concerned about
00:52:45.520 | what is happening outside,
00:52:47.520 | in the secular arena,
00:52:49.520 | what may be happening in politics,
00:52:51.520 | the greatest destruction,
00:52:53.520 | the greatest hindrance to the gospel
00:52:55.520 | is always within the church.
00:52:59.520 | It is within the church.
00:53:01.520 | That is a realm that we know Satan rules.
00:53:04.520 | So when Satan chooses to do
00:53:06.520 | what he has authority to do,
00:53:08.520 | what he has power to do,
00:53:09.520 | no one should be shocked.
00:53:12.520 | The fact that this crazy world
00:53:14.520 | and what's happening in California
00:53:16.520 | and in the federal government
00:53:17.520 | and the decisions that they're making,
00:53:19.520 | that you can't even tell a parent
00:53:22.520 | if a child wants a sex change,
00:53:24.520 | that by law you can't even tell the parents.
00:53:26.520 | I mean, it is crazy what's going on in California.
00:53:30.520 | But what's happening out there,
00:53:32.520 | Satan has always ruled.
00:53:35.520 | That's his realm.
00:53:36.520 | He's a god of this age.
00:53:38.520 | So people who are under his control,
00:53:40.520 | doing what Satan wants to do,
00:53:42.520 | we shouldn't be shocked.
00:53:45.520 | I'm not saying that we should sit and do nothing,
00:53:48.520 | but we shouldn't be shocked.
00:53:50.520 | But Satan's power is directed to the church.
00:53:55.520 | Specifically to the church.
00:53:57.520 | He comes as an angel of light.
00:53:58.520 | 1 Timothy 4.1, he says he introduces false doctrines.
00:54:03.520 | In the name of Christ,
00:54:06.520 | to pervert the scriptures,
00:54:07.520 | to take verses out of context,
00:54:09.520 | or tickle people's ears
00:54:11.520 | by telling people what they want to hear.
00:54:13.520 | And so they bring deception into the church
00:54:16.520 | through false doctrines.
00:54:18.520 | And then the way that they
00:54:21.520 | make it more palatable or acceptable
00:54:23.520 | in Revelation 16.14 is by performing miracles.
00:54:27.520 | Those of you who are with us
00:54:29.520 | when we're studying the book of Revelation chapter 13,
00:54:32.520 | remember, Satan mimics
00:54:35.520 | the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
00:54:37.520 | And as a result of that,
00:54:38.520 | they think he pretends to die
00:54:40.520 | and then he comes back
00:54:41.520 | and the whole world is excited about it
00:54:43.520 | and they come to him, it says in Revelation 13.
00:54:46.520 | So he is mimicking the miracles of Christ.
00:54:52.520 | And he says he uses these means
00:54:54.520 | to deceive according to scripture.
00:54:56.520 | He says that the deception is going to be so great
00:54:59.520 | that even the elect, if that was possible,
00:55:02.520 | will be deceived.
00:55:04.520 | You know what that means?
00:55:05.520 | It doesn't mean that the elect are going to be deceived.
00:55:08.520 | He said the people that you thought were elect
00:55:11.520 | are going to be deceived.
00:55:14.520 | Like Ravi Zacharias, shocking all of us.
00:55:18.520 | He said you're going to see more of that at the end times.
00:55:21.520 | That people who are teachers, who are leaders,
00:55:23.520 | spiritual giants in our eyes,
00:55:26.520 | he says even they will be deceived.
00:55:28.520 | It's going to be so powerful.
00:55:31.520 | Now all of this,
00:55:33.520 | how does that apply to us?
00:55:35.520 | Well, the Bible tells us
00:55:37.520 | that Christians cannot be possessed by demons
00:55:40.520 | because we are possessed by Christ.
00:55:43.520 | The Holy Spirit has made an indwelling.
00:55:46.520 | We belong to him.
00:55:47.520 | But the scripture also tells us
00:55:49.520 | that you can be hindered and influenced
00:55:52.520 | by demonic influence.
00:55:53.520 | We see that in Peter.
00:55:55.520 | When Peter stands before him,
00:55:58.520 | he says, "You can't go. I will never fail you."
00:56:00.520 | And Jesus says, "Get behind me, Satan."
00:56:03.520 | So it's not because Satan has entered him.
00:56:05.520 | The scripture specifically says
00:56:07.520 | Satan entered into Judas.
00:56:09.520 | But Peter was being influenced.
00:56:12.520 | Remember Peter was like,
00:56:14.520 | "I'm this man and he has this pride.
00:56:16.520 | I can do it. Even if they all fail you, I won't fail you.
00:56:19.520 | So remember when you get into your kingdom,
00:56:21.520 | make sure that I'm going to be the greatest in the kingdom."
00:56:24.520 | And so his loyalty to Christ
00:56:26.520 | and his selfish ambition
00:56:28.520 | entered a cause,
00:56:30.520 | a crack,
00:56:31.520 | where Satan was able to influence him.
00:56:34.520 | He probably thought he was doing Jesus a favor,
00:56:37.520 | but instead he was being influenced by satanic power.
00:56:40.520 | So Christians can be influenced
00:56:43.520 | and be even deceived.
00:56:45.520 | In fact, Christians can be tormented
00:56:47.520 | because Apostle Paul says
00:56:49.520 | that the messenger of Satan came
00:56:51.520 | and put a thorn on his side.
00:56:53.520 | And he begged. He was so miserable
00:56:55.520 | because of Satan's messenger
00:56:57.520 | who was hindering him.
00:56:58.520 | He begged Christ to take it away.
00:57:01.520 | Jesus allowed it because
00:57:03.520 | it caused him to be humble.
00:57:05.520 | So Satan can influence
00:57:07.520 | and he can sometimes even torture Christians.
00:57:10.520 | But it can never possess a Christian.
00:57:13.520 | And it can only do what God allows.
00:57:17.520 | It is under the authority of Satan.
00:57:19.520 | Even when Jesus said,
00:57:22.520 | "Satan wants to sift you like wheat,"
00:57:24.520 | he had to go and get permission.
00:57:27.520 | And Jesus prayed for them
00:57:29.520 | so that your faith would not fail you.
00:57:31.520 | But,
00:57:34.520 | demons have complete
00:57:37.520 | and sovereign authority
00:57:40.520 | over non-believers.
00:57:42.520 | And that's the picture that we see with this man.
00:57:45.520 | He's not somebody who's just being hindered.
00:57:47.520 | He's not somebody who's just being tortured.
00:57:49.520 | He's absolutely possessed
00:57:51.520 | by these demons.
00:57:53.520 | When Jesus asked him, "Who are you?"
00:57:55.520 | And he said, "We are legion."
00:57:57.520 | A legion is not simply a name,
00:58:00.520 | at least in that particular time.
00:58:01.520 | Legion basically means
00:58:03.520 | a large Roman soldiers.
00:58:07.520 | Basically, the numbers went from
00:58:09.520 | anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000.
00:58:10.520 | During the period of Christ,
00:58:11.520 | those numbers fluctuated
00:58:13.520 | from 3,000 to 6,000.
00:58:15.520 | Later on, they lowered the number
00:58:17.520 | to about 1,000.
00:58:18.520 | So some people think that
00:58:19.520 | when he said legion,
00:58:20.520 | we have 1,000 of them.
00:58:21.520 | But during the time of Christ,
00:58:23.520 | it could have been anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000.
00:58:25.520 | So when they used the word legion,
00:58:26.520 | it just means thousands.
00:58:28.520 | Many.
00:58:31.520 | Now, even though it's only one man,
00:58:33.520 | it says, "We are legions in here."
00:58:35.520 | They don't occupy physical space.
00:58:37.520 | So whether it's one,
00:58:38.520 | whether it's tens of thousands,
00:58:40.520 | they can occupy the same man.
00:58:43.520 | So we see a picture of a man
00:58:44.520 | who is completely possessed.
00:58:47.520 | And in his possession,
00:58:48.520 | he says he kept them naked
00:58:49.520 | for a long period of time.
00:58:51.520 | Now, why is that there?
00:58:53.520 | Just to embarrass him?
00:58:56.520 | Remember where the clothing first came in.
00:58:59.520 | Was there clothing before sin?
00:59:02.520 | No.
00:59:03.520 | We would have been all buck naked.
00:59:06.520 | This is all because of sin.
00:59:09.520 | As soon as sin comes in, what happens?
00:59:10.520 | Their eyes are open,
00:59:11.520 | and they see shame.
00:59:14.520 | And as a result of shame--
00:59:15.520 | and that shame wasn't simply
00:59:16.520 | the physical parts.
00:59:17.520 | It was spiritual.
00:59:19.520 | It wasn't all of a sudden
00:59:20.520 | that certain parts of our body
00:59:21.520 | were shameful.
00:59:22.520 | It was because sin came in,
00:59:23.520 | and they felt shame,
00:59:25.520 | and as a result of shame,
00:59:27.520 | they began to hide from each other.
00:59:31.520 | This legion comes in
00:59:32.520 | and basically takes away
00:59:34.520 | any presence of shame.
00:59:37.520 | It's not because he's not sinful.
00:59:38.520 | It's not because he's become pure.
00:59:41.520 | Just there's no shame,
00:59:42.520 | and that's what the Scripture says.
00:59:43.520 | At the end times,
00:59:44.520 | when the demonic influence
00:59:45.520 | is powerful,
00:59:47.520 | that there's going to be
00:59:48.520 | less and less shame,
00:59:49.520 | and we see that around us now.
00:59:51.520 | People are flaunting sin
00:59:52.520 | like if it's righteousness.
00:59:56.520 | They're declaring
00:59:58.520 | that everybody else submit to them
01:00:00.520 | because they have lost
01:00:02.520 | the ability to be shamed.
01:00:05.520 | And that's exactly
01:00:06.520 | what it says it's doing,
01:00:07.520 | and then it says
01:00:08.520 | he lived not in a home,
01:00:09.520 | but in a tomb.
01:00:11.520 | For a Jew,
01:00:12.520 | the most unclean place you can be
01:00:15.520 | that would be defiling to a Jew
01:00:17.520 | would be in a tomb.
01:00:18.520 | Now, they're living in an area
01:00:20.520 | in Gerasenes
01:00:21.520 | where there were Gentiles
01:00:22.520 | and Jews mixed in together,
01:00:24.520 | but the fact that he lived in a tomb
01:00:25.520 | basically means
01:00:26.520 | that he wasn't living
01:00:27.520 | in regular society.
01:00:29.520 | That took him away
01:00:30.520 | and isolated him,
01:00:31.520 | and in fact, it says
01:00:32.520 | that oftentimes the devil,
01:00:35.520 | the demons,
01:00:36.520 | would lead him out in the desert,
01:00:37.520 | and desert basically was
01:00:38.520 | to separate him from society.
01:00:41.520 | So oftentimes in the scripture
01:00:42.520 | when God wanted to train somebody,
01:00:45.520 | he would take him out into the desert,
01:00:47.520 | and sometimes the wandering of the desert
01:00:49.520 | was a punishment,
01:00:51.520 | but the desert basically meant
01:00:53.520 | to separate them from society.
01:00:55.520 | Now, why is that?
01:00:57.520 | Remember in creation,
01:00:59.520 | God saw Adam,
01:01:00.520 | and he was alone.
01:01:01.520 | He said it was not good,
01:01:03.520 | so he created a partner for him,
01:01:05.520 | and all other human beings
01:01:07.520 | came from that partnership.
01:01:09.520 | Mankind was never meant to be alone.
01:01:13.520 | He made us social.
01:01:15.520 | People who are not social
01:01:17.520 | for a long period of time
01:01:19.520 | become weird.
01:01:21.520 | That was my observation.
01:01:23.520 | You know what I mean?
01:01:25.520 | They say weird things.
01:01:26.520 | They do weird things
01:01:27.520 | because they don't have people
01:01:28.520 | kicking them under the table.
01:01:30.520 | That's one of the benefits of marriage
01:01:32.520 | is sanctifying
01:01:33.520 | because you know when you're saying
01:01:35.520 | weird things
01:01:36.520 | because your wife will tell you.
01:01:39.520 | People were isolated for a long period of time
01:01:41.520 | because God created us to be social.
01:01:43.520 | Remember when the pandemic happened?
01:01:47.520 | Depression skyrocketed.
01:01:50.520 | Suicide rate,
01:01:51.520 | especially among the young,
01:01:52.520 | skyrocketed.
01:01:53.520 | Now, why did that happen?
01:01:55.520 | Because they were isolated.
01:01:57.520 | They were isolated for an extended period of time,
01:02:00.520 | and they said it caused depression and suicide.
01:02:04.520 | They don't know the accurate number
01:02:05.520 | because the people who are in charge
01:02:07.520 | don't want to present it.
01:02:10.520 | Not yet.
01:02:13.520 | But God created us to be in society.
01:02:17.520 | Part of the common grace
01:02:18.520 | that all mankind experiences
01:02:20.520 | is family, society, culture, community.
01:02:24.520 | You see the demons come in here,
01:02:25.520 | take away any sense of shame,
01:02:27.520 | takes them out of the community,
01:02:29.520 | takes them out into the desert,
01:02:31.520 | and this guy was so wild,
01:02:34.520 | and those legions in him were so powerful
01:02:36.520 | that even as he was chained,
01:02:38.520 | he said he broke it and he would come back.
01:02:40.520 | So imagine what it must have been like, right?
01:02:45.520 | What it must have been like
01:02:46.520 | to have that guy in that region.
01:02:49.520 | My guess is they did everything in their power
01:02:51.520 | to bind him, isolate him,
01:02:54.520 | to heal him,
01:02:55.520 | take him to a doctor,
01:02:57.520 | and my guess is they've kind of given up
01:02:59.520 | and they just learned to avoid him.
01:03:03.520 | Jesus shows up.
01:03:06.520 | He doesn't sit there
01:03:07.520 | and he doesn't come up with a plan.
01:03:08.520 | He doesn't say, "You know what?
01:03:09.520 | "Build a bigger house or make a hole
01:03:11.520 | "and then lock him up
01:03:12.520 | "or send some counselors
01:03:14.520 | "and I'm going to train you to counsel."
01:03:16.520 | Jesus appears.
01:03:17.520 | That's all he does.
01:03:19.520 | Here's a man who's been an eyesore,
01:03:21.520 | who's been a danger to anybody in that community,
01:03:23.520 | and my guess is everybody moved away from him
01:03:26.520 | as far as possible
01:03:28.520 | because they didn't find any solution.
01:03:30.520 | My guess is even his family
01:03:31.520 | must have abandoned him by this time,
01:03:34.520 | and all Jesus does is show up
01:03:37.520 | and problem is solved.
01:03:40.520 | It says that this man comes
01:03:42.520 | and he kneels before Christ
01:03:44.520 | because he recognizes him.
01:03:47.520 | We're going to be talking about what Jesus does
01:03:49.520 | and the end result of that
01:03:50.520 | in the next section
01:03:51.520 | when we look at it next week,
01:03:54.520 | but revival broke out
01:03:55.520 | because Jesus showed up,
01:03:58.520 | because Jesus showed up.
01:04:02.520 | We live in a culture
01:04:03.520 | where we have so much education,
01:04:05.520 | so much know-how,
01:04:06.520 | and all of these things are a benefit,
01:04:08.520 | but the problem with all of these things
01:04:10.520 | is we think that if we throw enough of our know-how,
01:04:13.520 | enough of our knowledge,
01:04:14.520 | that we can cure this.
01:04:16.520 | We can fix this.
01:04:19.520 | The only solution to what has caused the sin
01:04:23.520 | and the problem that sin has caused
01:04:25.520 | is the presence of Christ.
01:04:28.520 | When you have Christ,
01:04:31.520 | revival breaks out.
01:04:35.520 | It's not because this church is organized better.
01:04:38.520 | It's because we have better leaders
01:04:40.520 | in this church over that church.
01:04:41.520 | We have more gifted people over here.
01:04:42.520 | We have more talent.
01:04:43.520 | We have more experience.
01:04:45.520 | The difference between a healthy church
01:04:47.520 | and an unhealthy church
01:04:48.520 | is the presence of Christ.
01:04:51.520 | That's why if you look at the letter
01:04:52.520 | in the Revelation,
01:04:53.520 | at the end it says,
01:04:54.520 | "If you do not repent,
01:04:56.520 | I will take away my lampstand."
01:04:58.520 | A lampstand basically
01:04:59.520 | is symbolizing Christ's presence.
01:05:03.520 | As much as people desire revival,
01:05:06.520 | revival isn't louder singing.
01:05:08.520 | Revival isn't greater gathering.
01:05:10.520 | Revival isn't a larger church.
01:05:13.520 | Revival is the presence of Christ.
01:05:17.520 | Presence of Christ casts out demons.
01:05:21.520 | They were tortured by His presence.
01:05:26.520 | Even before He said a single word,
01:05:29.520 | He showed up
01:05:32.520 | and they were terrified.
01:05:35.520 | That's why the Scripture says,
01:05:37.520 | "You can't serve God and mammon."
01:05:39.520 | You can't.
01:05:40.520 | Because where God dwells,
01:05:43.520 | the demons have no power.
01:05:45.520 | If the demons are going to have
01:05:47.520 | any authority in you,
01:05:49.520 | any influence in you,
01:05:51.520 | it has to move away from Christ.
01:05:56.520 | Revival comes when we are near Christ.
01:05:58.520 | That's why the Scripture says
01:05:59.520 | to abide in Him,
01:06:00.520 | to stay with Him,
01:06:01.520 | remain in Him,
01:06:02.520 | to continue with Him.
01:06:05.520 | Because this powerful,
01:06:08.520 | this powerful being,
01:06:10.520 | a third of the angels
01:06:11.520 | under His control,
01:06:12.520 | who's organized like an army,
01:06:14.520 | who's prowling around
01:06:16.520 | seeking someone to devour,
01:06:17.520 | is targeting you,
01:06:19.520 | to deceive you,
01:06:21.520 | to move you away
01:06:23.520 | so that it can influence you
01:06:25.520 | and destroy what God has ordained
01:06:27.520 | to bring light
01:06:29.520 | into the domain of darkness.
01:06:33.520 | Christ said, "I will build my church
01:06:35.520 | and the gates of Hades
01:06:36.520 | will not be able to prevail against it."
01:06:38.520 | So, the church has been created
01:06:41.520 | as an army to bring the light
01:06:44.520 | and to storm the gate
01:06:45.520 | where Satan has authority.
01:06:48.520 | So, Satan, if he's going to fight back,
01:06:50.520 | what's he going to fight back?
01:06:52.520 | Us.
01:06:54.520 | Everything else is under his control.
01:06:58.520 | The church is not.
01:07:00.520 | In fact, we're the ones
01:07:04.520 | hindering his work.
01:07:08.520 | And he's working through deception
01:07:11.520 | to destroy the church,
01:07:12.520 | to water down the church.
01:07:14.520 | Let me conclude with this.
01:07:18.520 | I want to show you
01:07:19.520 | what demonic faith looks like
01:07:21.520 | because in James chapter 2, 19,
01:07:24.520 | it says, "Faith without deeds is dead."
01:07:26.520 | It's useless.
01:07:28.520 | For some reason in our culture,
01:07:32.520 | for some reason in our culture,
01:07:35.520 | there's a fight against scripture.
01:07:38.520 | Don't look at what you see.
01:07:41.520 | Believe what I say.
01:07:45.520 | That sounds like a lifelong politician.
01:07:49.520 | Don't look at my record.
01:07:51.520 | Listen to what I say.
01:07:54.520 | And that has penetrated into the church
01:07:58.520 | that we're more susceptible
01:08:01.520 | to what people say
01:08:03.520 | than what we see.
01:08:05.520 | It says, "Faith without deeds is dead,"
01:08:07.520 | no matter what it confesses.
01:08:08.520 | So I want to show you
01:08:09.520 | what demonic faith looks like.
01:08:11.520 | In this encounter,
01:08:12.520 | verse 20 to 31,
01:08:13.520 | "Seeing Jesus, he cried out
01:08:14.520 | and fell before him
01:08:15.520 | and said in a loud voice,
01:08:16.520 | 'What business do we have
01:08:17.520 | with each other, Jesus,
01:08:18.520 | Son of the Most High God?
01:08:19.520 | I beg you, do not torment me.
01:08:21.520 | For he had commanded
01:08:22.520 | the unclean spirit
01:08:23.520 | to come out of the man.
01:08:24.520 | For he had seized him many times
01:08:26.520 | and he was bound with chains
01:08:27.520 | and shackles and kept under guard.
01:08:29.520 | And yet he would break his bonds
01:08:31.520 | and be driven by demons
01:08:32.520 | into the desert.
01:08:33.520 | Jesus asked him,
01:08:34.520 | 'What is your name?'
01:08:35.520 | And he said, 'Legion.'
01:08:36.520 | For many demons had entered him.
01:08:37.520 | They were imploring him
01:08:39.520 | not to command them
01:08:40.520 | to go away into the abyss."
01:08:42.520 | So I want you to first look at this.
