00:42:35.860 | that an overflowing of gratitude is evidence
00:42:40.000 | that a person has received Christ Jesus as Lord.
00:42:43.040 | It's evidence.
00:42:45.080 | Romans 1, 21, for even though they knew God,

00:44:28.360 | the Jubilate, which literally means, "Oh, be joyful."

00:44:37.200 | and basically it's an instructional guide
00:44:39.960 | for the corporate giving of thanks.
00:44:43.000 | So here's the outline for today's sermon
00:44:44.900 | that's based on Psalm 100,
00:44:46.960 | and I'm gonna just walk you through Psalm 100
00:44:50.720 | in kind of a question form, all right?
00:44:53.360 | The first point, how do we express our thanksgiving?
00:44:56.720 | What's the prescription of the scriptures?
00:44:59.320 | How do we express our thanksgiving?
00:45:01.480 | Second, why do we express our thanksgiving?
00:45:05.700 | And the most important,
00:45:11.160 | so that we ensure it's not lip service,
00:45:13.400 | the most important question is,
00:45:15.220 | what biblically is thanksgiving?
00:45:17.720 | And we're gonna have to jump out of Psalm 100 for that,
00:45:20.120 | but what is it?
00:45:21.200 | The first two questions will be answered in Psalm 100,
00:45:24.960 | the how and the why of thanksgiving,
00:45:26.760 | and they're easy enough to understand.
00:45:28.140 | It's not that complicated.
00:45:29.520 | But Psalm 100 doesn't quite explain what it is.
00:45:34.600 | And defining what thanksgiving is is of supreme importance,
00:45:39.680 | because you're gonna see in both the Old
00:45:41.200 | and the New Testaments that the offerings of thanks
00:45:45.800 | were at times rejected by God.
00:45:48.880 | So someone goes and gives a thanksgiving offering,
00:45:53.380 | and there is a no thank you very much.
00:45:55.980 | We don't wanna say thank you to God and get a divine
00:46:02.880 | you're not welcome in response.
00:46:06.480 | So it's very important that we understand biblically
00:46:08.920 | what thanksgiving is, and remember,
00:46:10.680 | the Bible says that thanksgiving is God's will,
00:46:13.360 | it's evidence of salvation, and the absence of it is sin.
00:46:17.060 | So for this third question, we're gonna leave Psalm 100
00:46:20.920 | and take a quick survey of the last four chapters
00:46:23.440 | of Hebrews, and we're gonna see what biblical thanksgiving
00:46:28.120 | is and what it isn't.
00:46:29.940 | So here's the first point and first question.
00:46:32.360 | How do we express our thanksgiving?
00:46:35.220 | How do we express our thanksgiving?
00:46:36.680 | And I'm gonna take a look at Psalm 100 once again.
00:46:39.520 | Shout joyfully to the Lord all the earth.
00:46:42.440 | Serve the Lord with gladness.
00:46:44.720 | Come before him with joyful singing.
00:46:47.160 | Know that the Lord himself is God.
00:46:49.760 | It is he who has made us and not we ourselves.
00:46:52.800 | We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
00:46:56.720 | Enter his gates with thanksgiving
00:46:58.960 | and his courts with praise.
00:47:01.000 | Give thanks to him, bless his name,
00:47:03.480 | for the Lord is good, his loving kindness is everlasting,
00:47:08.240 | and his faithfulness to all generations, amen.
00:47:11.960 | There are seven commands.
00:47:14.180 | We call them imperatives here in these four verses.
00:47:17.200 | Seven commands.
00:47:18.920 | And they are listed in a kind of chiastic order.
00:47:23.000 | A chi spelled C-H-I is the Greek equivalent of our ex.
00:47:28.000 | So a chiastic structure is where there are parallels
00:47:32.680 | between the beginning and the end,
00:47:34.440 | and then the second section,
00:47:36.720 | and then the second to last section,
00:47:39.080 | and so on and so forth.
00:47:41.360 | It's a literary tool used in biblical writings.
00:47:45.640 | And the emphasis and the highlight of every chiasm
00:47:48.640 | falls right at the center, at the point, at the juncture.
00:47:52.840 | So in English, the main idea or the thought
00:47:56.180 | is found in either the introduction or the conclusion,
00:47:58.240 | the first or last sentence of every paragraph.
00:48:00.780 | But in the chiasm, it's in the middle.
00:48:03.560 | So I'm going to make it a little easier
00:48:06.880 | for your eyes to track along.
00:48:09.280 | So the seven imperatives are there
00:48:15.240 | in chiastic structure from verses one through four.
00:48:18.520 | And the imperative found in verse three is the main point,
00:48:22.540 | the main emphasis and the hinge on which everything turns.
00:48:27.720 | And then verse five serves as a summary,
00:48:30.880 | once again elaborating on the point of verse three,
00:48:35.620 | and it's an exhortation for all of God's people
00:48:38.720 | to know God and to be known by God.
00:48:40.940 | So notice also how most of the imperatives here
00:48:47.040 | have an attitude or some kind of emotion attached to them.
00:48:50.820 | Remember, what's the question?
00:48:53.200 | We're trying to discern how we are to give thanks.
00:48:56.160 | So Psalm 100 says that God's people are to shout joyfully,
00:49:01.160 | God's people are to serve gladly,
00:49:04.020 | we are to come with joyful singing,
00:49:07.200 | we are to enter with thanksgiving and praise,
00:49:10.820 | we are to give thanks and we are to bless.
00:49:13.260 | And so these are the imperatives,
00:49:15.540 | the instructions on how we are to give thanks.
00:49:18.300 | And this giving of thanks is to be expressive,
00:49:23.140 | loud and passionate.
00:49:26.420 | Okay, the Asians in the room
00:49:27.840 | are already like a little bit uncomfortable, right?
00:49:29.680 | Expressive, loud, passionate.
00:49:33.040 | And I'm going to help you visualize
00:49:34.420 | what this is supposed to look like.
00:49:36.360 | Think of your favorite stadium, sports arena,
00:49:41.720 | and you're there, and you're watching your favorite team
00:49:46.320 | win the World Series, the NBA Finals,
00:49:48.400 | the Stanley Cup, whatever it is,
00:49:50.440 | you are in attendance for that.
00:49:53.520 | The buzzer sounds, and your team has just won it all
00:49:58.360 | in front of the home crowd.
00:50:00.080 | So even if you've never been to something like that,
00:50:03.960 | you can imagine the entire crowd erupting in loud cheers,
00:50:08.960 | dancing in celebration, high-fiving complete strangers,
00:50:13.680 | jumping up and down, and hugging it out.
00:50:16.360 | And this is the visual I get for Psalm 100.
00:50:21.600 | It's a global celebration,
00:50:25.040 | and the joy and the energy of it, it's not containable.
00:50:28.600 | It's just raucous, it's loud.
00:50:31.920 | So God's people are to erupt into joyful shouting,
00:50:36.780 | into exultant singing and praise,
00:50:39.080 | and to serve God in such a way that he is at the center,
00:50:42.320 | that he is glorified, and he is celebrated.
00:50:45.240 | So the joy and adulation and the praises and the shouts,
00:50:49.680 | they're not forced.
00:50:51.920 | They're not fake.
00:50:53.360 | They're only a natural response of celebration
00:50:57.800 | appropriate to the moment.
00:51:00.240 | So God's people are to just shout, serve,
00:51:03.400 | joyfully sing, cheer, dance, celebrate.
00:51:07.280 | And that is the how God's people are to give thanks.
00:51:12.180 | Now I'm not saying to do this tonight
00:51:16.440 | at your regional dinner,
00:51:18.840 | or on Thursday with your relatives.
00:51:21.240 | It might not go well.
00:51:22.400 | And my advice, which hopefully is not a contradiction
00:51:26.600 | to my own sermon point,
00:51:27.800 | is that you should be careful not to be this expressive
00:51:31.400 | at dinner, read the room, okay?
00:51:33.760 | It might unnecessarily weird some people out,
00:51:37.480 | but take comfort in knowing that many read this psalm
00:51:42.400 | as prophecy.
00:51:43.460 | Matthew Henry, a Bible commentator of the early 1700s,
00:51:48.000 | says this about Psalm 100.
00:51:49.680 | This song of praise should be considered as a prophecy
00:51:56.760 | and even used as a prayer for the coming of that time
00:52:00.400 | when all people shall know that the Lord, he is God,
00:52:04.820 | and shall become his worshipers
00:52:07.320 | and the sheep of his pasture.
00:52:08.960 | Great encouragement is given us in worshiping God
00:52:14.320 | to do it cheerfully.
00:52:16.260 | If when we strayed like wandering sheep,
00:52:18.460 | he has brought us again to his fold,
00:52:21.520 | we have indeed abundant cause to bless his name.
00:52:25.020 | The matter of praise and the motives to it
00:52:28.040 | are very important.
00:52:30.060 | Know ye what God is in himself and what he is to you,
00:52:35.060 | know it, consider and apply it,
00:52:37.800 | and then you will be more close and constant,
00:52:40.420 | more inward and serious in his worship.
00:52:44.780 | So most of this will be future,
00:52:46.480 | but not all of our exuberance should be limited
00:52:52.260 | to only our worship in heaven.
00:52:54.040 | Hopefully we get a little taste of it this week,
00:52:57.980 | and hopefully we have real moments like this
00:53:01.700 | on this side of eternity.
00:53:03.240 | The main imperative of Psalm 100 is
00:53:07.460 | know that the Lord himself is God,
00:53:10.560 | and this is both an already and a not yet.
00:53:15.340 | This knowledge of God was initiated
00:53:17.660 | when you genuinely put your faith
00:53:20.260 | in the atoning work of Christ on the cross.
00:53:22.500 | At that moment, you were given a new heart
00:53:25.980 | and the spirit of God was deposited in you,
00:53:28.900 | and if that was done to you at some point
00:53:33.520 | in your personal history,
00:53:35.040 | you already have a growing knowledge of God.
00:53:39.680 | On this side of eternity,
00:53:43.800 | our knowledge of God is going to be imperfect.
00:53:47.040 | It won't be a face-to-face kind of a knowledge.
00:53:50.220 | It's going to be limited,
00:53:51.500 | but if you've placed your faith in Christ,
00:53:56.220 | eternity has already started for you,
00:53:58.500 | and eternity spent knowing God has already started,
00:54:03.820 | and if you are a child of God,
00:54:07.360 | there will have been moments in this life
00:54:10.600 | that have been filled with wonder, awe, and praise,
00:54:15.240 | and you will have erupted in spontaneous worship.
00:54:18.660 | You will have given thanks,
00:54:20.640 | not just for the material things that he has given you,
00:54:25.400 | but you've been awestruck by who he is,
00:54:29.140 | and you've been dumbfounded and utterly humbled
00:54:32.200 | that this God of the universe would draw near to you,
00:54:35.020 | so how do we give thanks in the present?
00:54:40.460 | By joyfully and actively celebrating
00:54:43.100 | the growing knowledge of God.
00:54:46.920 | That's the how, and this brings me to my second point.
00:54:50.900 | Why do we express our thanksgiving?
00:54:54.840 | Why do we express our thanksgiving?
00:54:58.940 | The reasons why we are to give thanks
00:55:02.960 | are found in verse three and five.
00:55:06.540 | Verse three, the knowing of God is the main point.
00:55:11.540 | Verse five is an elaboration
00:55:15.520 | or a summarization of this main point.
00:55:19.480 | Okay, so I wanna read verse three and five for you again.
00:55:21.960 | Know that the Lord himself is God.
00:55:25.760 | It is he who has made us and not we ourselves.
00:55:29.060 | We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
00:55:33.720 | Verse five, for the Lord is good.
00:55:37.500 | His lovingkindness is everlasting,
00:55:40.360 | and his faithfulness to all generations.
00:55:43.740 | So there are basically six descriptions of God
00:55:47.200 | which make up the reason why you and I are to give thanks.
00:55:50.240 | Six reasons, okay?
00:55:52.480 | So we find in verse three, three descriptions of who he is,
00:55:57.480 | and then in verse five, three descriptions
00:56:01.060 | of what he is like.
00:56:03.160 | Three descriptions of who he is
00:56:05.760 | and three descriptions of what he is like.
00:56:08.080 | So he is God, he is creator, he is the shepherd,
00:56:13.080 | and what is he like?
00:56:17.820 | He is good.
00:56:19.000 | His lovingkindness is everlasting,
00:56:22.540 | and he is eternally faithful.
00:56:26.000 | This is the why.
00:56:32.920 | The saint of God is to respond in exultant praise
00:56:36.200 | and thanksgiving because of who he is and what he is like,
00:56:41.200 | and that's what you and I have been created for.
00:56:44.580 | A good and all-powerful God knows us,
00:56:50.120 | loves us, tends to our every need,
00:56:53.120 | and we have been created to give thanks.
00:56:56.560 | That's the very purpose for which we have been created,
00:57:01.160 | to give thanks.
00:57:03.640 | If I were to insert a Christian into Romans 121,
00:57:08.640 | it would read something like this.
00:57:12.180 | For because they knew God, they honored him as God
00:57:18.280 | and gave thanks, and they grew in wisdom,
00:57:23.920 | and the light of Christ shined brightly in their hearts.
00:57:31.120 | And you notice here in Psalm 100
00:57:33.720 | that there is no call to respond to what he has given
00:57:37.680 | or what blessing he has bestowed.
00:57:41.080 | You guys notice that?
00:57:45.760 | The what has he done for me lately reasoning
00:57:49.880 | is nowhere to be found in the thankful Christian heart.
00:57:54.340 | It's completely unrelated to circumstance.
00:58:01.640 | He is creation, our creator, we are creation.
00:58:06.280 | He is sovereign, we are dependent.
00:58:08.840 | He is king of kings,
00:58:10.320 | and we have been chosen to be called his people.
00:58:14.200 | He is the good shepherd, we are his sheep.
00:58:17.280 | He is fearsome and terrifying and all-powerful
00:58:21.980 | like Aslan the lion, but he is good.
00:58:25.220 | He is the good shepherd who lays down his life
00:58:29.920 | for the sheep, he goes after the sheep
00:58:32.440 | even when it mathematically does not make sense.
00:58:36.480 | His loving kindness is everlasting.
00:58:39.120 | You guys know what everlasting means?
00:58:42.640 | His loving kindness is the same yesterday,
00:58:46.200 | today, and forever.
00:58:47.840 | He is eternally faithful, and his faithfulness to us
00:58:54.320 | is absolutely not dependent on our faithfulness to him,
00:58:59.440 | how much we've prayed, how much we've been giving
00:59:02.080 | and offering, how much we've done devotion,
00:59:03.920 | how often we've evangelized.
00:59:05.520 | It is completely unrelated to our faithfulness.
00:59:10.360 | Second Timothy 2.13 says that if we are faithless,
00:59:13.280 | he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.
00:59:17.480 | God is faithful, that is who he is.
00:59:22.480 | And we are his.
00:59:28.740 | We are, of course, to give thanks for what he does for us.
00:59:32.320 | But more than being thankful for what he does for us,
00:59:37.720 | we're supposed to be thankful for who he is to us.
00:59:43.120 | When I give my kids a gift, I don't get them a toy
00:59:48.680 | that I know that they're not gonna like.
00:59:50.560 | If I go to Target, I'll pick out something
00:59:52.400 | that I know my kids will like 'cause I know them,
00:59:55.120 | appropriate to their age and situation.
00:59:58.440 | And when I get them a gift, I want them to enjoy it
01:00:02.000 | and I love it when they say,
01:00:05.600 | thank you, Daddy, for this gift.
01:00:07.660 | I'm very happy about that.
01:00:10.440 | I don't reject it.
01:00:12.480 | But what gives me greater joy is when they say
01:00:16.360 | something like this on a cheesy card,
01:00:18.680 | you're the best Daddy in the world.
01:00:21.640 | Obviously, that's not objectively true.
01:00:27.720 | When they say, you're my favorite Daddy,
01:00:30.000 | I'm like, well, you have no other options.
01:00:32.540 | But when they say, you're the best Daddy in the world,
01:00:38.040 | what they're saying is, I love having you as my Daddy,
01:00:43.040 | regardless of what I give him.
01:00:47.640 | We have been created, of course,
01:00:52.520 | to enjoy all the good gifts that the Creator gives.
01:00:57.640 | But we've been created to enjoy the Creator
01:01:00.760 | more than to enjoy the Creator's gifts.
01:01:04.880 | Hopefully, you're tracking.
01:01:08.280 | We are to be thankful that we are His
01:01:13.460 | and that He knows us intimately.
01:01:15.680 | The people of God know their God.
01:01:19.400 | Take a look at how Psalm 100 in verse three
01:01:22.240 | describes the saints.
01:01:26.560 | We have been created.
01:01:28.000 | We are His people.
01:01:30.640 | We are His sheep.
01:01:32.760 | That's the description.
01:01:35.600 | We have been created by God and for God
01:01:42.040 | to love God and to serve God,
01:01:44.580 | but sin leads us to believe that He exists
01:01:49.040 | to love us, to serve us, and to do our bidding.
01:01:56.040 | Sin makes us think we have every right
01:01:59.480 | to elevate ourselves on equal plane with God
01:02:03.840 | and that we have every right to reject Him
01:02:06.800 | if He does not satisfy our needs.
01:02:11.240 | That's what sin does to our thinking
01:02:14.880 | and causes us to be foolish and darkened.
01:02:17.960 | So why do we give thanks to God?
01:02:20.760 | Let me summarize.
01:02:24.920 | Because He is good, we're not.
01:02:29.920 | He is love, we're not lovable.
01:02:37.240 | He is faithful even when we are not.
01:02:42.960 | And this good, loving, faithful God
01:02:47.280 | has intentionally chosen a wicked, unlovable,
01:02:50.980 | and a faithless people to Himself for Himself.
01:02:54.780 | He didn't decide only to be merciful,
01:02:58.200 | but in His grace, He chose to make us
01:03:01.120 | who were objects, technon, children, spawn,
01:03:04.720 | targets of wrath, and He elevated us to adopted children,
01:03:09.720 | judges of even angels, co-heirs with Christ.
01:03:14.680 | If you understand that, how do you not give thanks?
01:03:19.860 | He is a God who not only gives help and gives relief,
01:03:24.860 | I mean, oftentimes we seek Him when we need help, right?
01:03:28.920 | He is a God who not only changes our circumstances,
01:03:34.400 | but who can and does change our nature.
01:03:38.860 | He takes a dead corpse and gives it newness of life.
01:03:47.140 | Happiness and approval over a favorable change
01:03:52.140 | of circumstance is not the same thing as thanksgiving.
01:03:56.540 | I'm gonna repeat that.
01:03:58.820 | Happiness and approval over a favorable change
01:04:04.100 | of circumstance is not the same thing as thanksgiving.
01:04:08.600 | I wanna take a look at Luke 17,
01:04:12.220 | and this story may be familiar with many of you.
01:04:16.080 | Luke 17, 11 to 19.
01:04:17.700 | While He was on the way to Jerusalem,
01:04:21.820 | He was passing between Samaria and Galilee.
01:04:24.860 | As He entered a village, 10 leprous men
01:04:28.980 | who stood at a distance met Him,
01:04:31.180 | and they raised their voices saying,
01:04:34.220 | "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."
01:04:38.460 | And when He saw them, He said to them,
01:04:42.200 | "Go and show yourselves to the priests,
01:04:45.540 | "and as they were going, they were cleansed."
01:04:49.460 | Now, I wanna pause there.
01:04:50.660 | Jesus responds to the lepers' requests
01:04:56.060 | for mercy and for healing.
01:04:57.480 | He responds.
01:05:01.220 | They cry, and He responds.
01:05:03.460 | And remember, leprosy was an incurable disease.
01:05:07.940 | It separated you from all your friends, all your family,
01:05:12.140 | but most importantly, you felt separated from God
01:05:15.380 | because many viewed leprosy as a punishment for some sin.
01:05:20.380 | But Jesus, He sends them to the priests
01:05:28.020 | so they could be examined according to Levitical law,
01:05:31.580 | and then socially accepted back into their communities,
01:05:34.900 | back at their work, back amongst their friends,
01:05:37.760 | and the text tells us that they were cleansed on the way.
01:05:43.460 | And for sure, this was a very favorable
01:05:46.700 | change of circumstance.
01:05:49.020 | This changed everything.
01:05:51.760 | And I assume all 10 lepers were super happy.
01:05:59.620 | All 10 lepers would probably say to you
01:06:05.700 | that they are so thankful
01:06:08.620 | 'cause their lives are now improved drastically
01:06:12.900 | in every way.
01:06:14.340 | But verse 15 continues.
01:06:17.360 | Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed,
01:06:21.660 | turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice,
01:06:28.060 | and he fell on his face at his feet,
01:06:32.120 | giving thanks to Him.
01:06:33.420 | And he was a Samaritan.
01:06:35.820 | And then Jesus answered and said,
01:06:40.900 | were there not 10 cleansed?
01:06:43.980 | But the nine, where are they?
01:06:46.440 | Was no one found who returned to give glory to God
01:06:51.460 | except this foreigner?
01:06:53.940 | And he said to him, stand up and go.
01:06:59.020 | Your faith has made you well.
01:07:00.460 | The Samaritan leper turns back,
01:07:06.260 | returns to give thanks and glory to God.
01:07:09.140 | All 10 lepers are happy.
01:07:10.820 | All 10 are made glad by the change of circumstance,
01:07:14.620 | but only one returns in faith
01:07:18.980 | and gives thanks and glory to God.
01:07:21.300 | All 10 had their circumstances changed,
01:07:25.420 | but it appears that only one had his nature changed.
01:07:29.280 | All 10, I'm sure, were ecstatic to be made well,
01:07:37.060 | but it appears that only one had been truly made whole,
01:07:40.860 | shalom, wholeness,
01:07:43.380 | being restored not just to his community and family,
01:07:48.380 | but to his creator.
01:07:49.980 | And perhaps this man had an advantage as a Samaritan,
01:07:55.200 | who believed themselves to be ethnically outside
01:08:00.540 | of the favor of God.
01:08:01.780 | On the outside looking in,
01:08:06.380 | he knew he was unworthy at that time
01:08:09.060 | simply because of his ethnic makeup.
01:08:11.660 | But perhaps this gave him an insight
01:08:16.500 | into truly how unworthy he really was.
01:08:20.860 | Maybe the Jewish lepers felt entitled
01:08:25.140 | 'cause they had been told from the time that they were born

01:09:44.880 | This brings me to one more parable
01:09:49.240 | which is found in the very next chapter of Luke.

01:10:04.520 | that they were religious and viewed others with contempt.
01:10:08.440 | Two men went up into the temple to pray,

01:14:00.660 | of thanksgiving?
01:14:01.580 | What is it?
01:14:04.420 | 'Cause it's still a little bit like vague.
01:14:08.300 | What is it?
01:14:11.340 | I was mulling over Hebrews 10 to 13, all four chapters,
01:14:14.980 | and I was just reading through it again and again,
01:14:17.940 | and then I put together this definition of thanksgiving.
01:14:20.860 | And here are some of the elements.
01:14:22.020 | It requires faith.
01:14:23.340 | 'Cause Hebrews 11, six, "Without faith,
01:14:26.100 | "it's impossible to please God."
01:14:27.740 | It's based on a blood sacrifice.
01:14:31.340 | Abel is mentioned in the beginning
01:14:33.980 | and at the end of Hebrews 11.
01:14:36.340 | And then Christ's blood is compared
01:14:38.620 | to be better than Abel's,
01:14:39.620 | so there's a blood sacrifice that's given.
01:14:41.820 | There's a bold confidence in approaching the throne
01:14:44.860 | of holy, holy, holy God.
01:14:48.020 | There is a perseverance and a joy,
01:14:52.580 | and a looking forward to a better city.
01:14:55.420 | There is nothing looked forward to in this life,
01:15:01.240 | in Hebrews 10 to 13.
01:15:03.240 | And that's always been the case.
01:15:07.820 | We praise God not because he's good to us in this life,
01:15:11.620 | but because he is good,
01:15:13.340 | and we will fully know face to face
01:15:17.740 | that he is supremely good
01:15:19.940 | when we meet him for all eternity.
01:15:21.820 | Gratitude is founded and focused upon
01:15:27.060 | God's eternal throne of grace.
01:15:30.980 | So I'm looking through Hebrews 10 to 13,
01:15:34.780 | and I have like a six-sentence definition,
01:15:37.020 | so I narrowed it down to just like two lines.
01:15:40.260 | And here it is.
01:15:41.340 | You don't need to copy this down
01:15:43.740 | because it could change a little bit tomorrow,
01:15:46.180 | and it's on the slide, okay?
01:15:47.680 | The virtue or act of blessing God
01:15:51.620 | by means of a faith-filled submission
01:15:56.300 | to his sovereignty and discipline, Hebrews 12,
01:16:00.540 | and a joy-filled reverence
01:16:06.460 | in being brought near to his throne of grace.
01:16:09.820 | That's Thanksgiving.
01:16:13.740 | And here's a summary verse, Hebrews 12, 28 to 29.
01:16:21.940 | And I was debating between this and Hebrews 13, five,
01:16:24.180 | which says, be content.
01:16:25.860 | Do not be greedy for money,
01:16:26.940 | be content with what you have,
01:16:28.060 | because he has said, never will I leave you or forsake you,
01:16:31.100 | but I felt like this one kind of captured it better.
01:16:33.900 | Hebrews 12, 28 to 29.
01:16:35.940 | Therefore, since we receive a kingdom
01:16:40.380 | which cannot be shaken,
01:16:42.300 | let us show gratitude
01:16:46.140 | by which we may offer to God
01:16:49.260 | an acceptable service with reverence and awe,
01:16:53.900 | for our God is a consuming fire.
01:16:56.860 | Our God is a jealous God.
01:17:00.780 | He's a consuming fire.
01:17:02.260 | But interestingly enough,
01:17:06.180 | a heart of genuine gratitude
01:17:09.500 | appeases and pleases God.
01:17:12.420 | Why do we show gratitude?
01:17:16.460 | Because we're receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
01:17:21.020 | Everything on this side of eternity can easily be shaken.
01:17:24.460 | Some of you guys are being shaken right now
01:17:26.540 | in circumstances.
01:17:27.780 | We've been learning in 2 Peter
01:17:30.540 | that everything on this side of eternity,
01:17:32.860 | the heavens and the earth are being reserved
01:17:35.180 | for fire for the day of judgment
01:17:36.780 | and destruction of ungodly men, everything.
01:17:39.760 | But because of the blood of Jesus,
01:17:43.420 | you and I, we don't have to worry about none of that.
01:17:46.420 | Nothing that happens here affects us.
01:17:50.060 | This is just a blip.
01:17:51.500 | This is temporary.
01:17:52.740 | This is all crash and burn.
01:17:54.860 | This is thorns and thistles.
01:17:57.420 | But we're spending eternity elsewhere.
01:18:00.300 | So we don't worry about any of that,
01:18:02.620 | because we're inheriting a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
01:18:05.980 | We're good.
