00:23:57.800 | It's a fake holiday created by Hallmark,
00:24:00.220 | florists, and chocolatiers.
00:24:01.540 | Peter, you don't need to do anything.
00:24:04.740 | And I immediately felt like this was either
00:24:08.300 | a test or a trap.
00:24:10.540 | And I asked her, are you sure?
00:24:14.120 | To which she emphatically replied, and I quote,
00:24:18.100 | "Yes, we don't need to do anything.
00:24:21.260 | "Let's not do anything."
00:24:24.260 | So being the naive, trusting simpleton that I am,
00:24:28.420 | when Valentine's Day rolled around a few weeks later,
00:24:31.800 | I did nothing.
00:24:32.700 | And I remember this day very well.
00:24:36.460 | Valentine's Day fell on Saturday that year.
00:24:39.860 | And that morning, Becky called me and asked me
00:24:41.940 | what I was going to do that day.
00:24:43.700 | And I told her I had to finish up my sermon,
00:24:46.460 | that I was planning on running errands in the afternoon,
00:24:49.140 | and that maybe we can grab dinner afterwards.
00:24:51.540 | So she came over.
00:24:53.660 | And the final errand was shopping
00:24:55.700 | at a Korean grocery market.
00:24:57.000 | And then we just grabbed a quick dinner at the food court.
00:25:01.660 | And then I think it dawned on her
00:25:03.900 | that I had really prepped nothing.
00:25:05.680 | I had planned nothing.
00:25:08.580 | That we were literally only going to run errands together
00:25:11.620 | and eat food court food.
00:25:13.160 | And at the end of the day, when I walked her to her car,
00:25:16.840 | she handed me a card that she had written in,
00:25:20.580 | and then teared up a little bit.
00:25:22.060 | And I think she was surprised and a bit hurt
00:25:25.960 | that I literally did nothing.
00:25:28.840 | So here's a public service announcement, brothers.
00:25:31.300 | (audience laughing)
00:25:32.620 | If a lady says to you, "You don't need to plan anything,"
00:25:35.920 | that's secret girl talk,
00:25:37.940 | for you should still plan something.
00:25:39.740 | Anyhow, in the following year, I wisened up.
00:25:42.660 | I knew I had to do something to make up
00:25:44.300 | for the previous Valentine's Day debacle.
00:25:47.020 | So I had to at least give her a nice, thoughtful gift.
00:25:51.060 | And having dated her at that point for about 13 months,
00:25:54.020 | I felt I knew exactly what she, my girlfriend, would want.
00:25:58.580 | You see, I had been making observations and taking notes
00:26:00.860 | and becoming an expert on all that is Becky.
00:26:02.700 | So 13 months, I noticed that Becky tried
00:26:05.700 | to be health-conscious in her eating.
00:26:08.140 | So no chocolates for Valentine's Day.
00:26:11.340 | I observed also that she was pretty frugal
00:26:13.360 | and didn't like spending money on frivolous things
00:26:15.740 | and on things that didn't last.
00:26:17.660 | So no flowers since they die pretty quickly.
00:26:20.780 | So with absolute confidence in my knowledge of her,
00:26:24.120 | I made my way to Target,
00:26:26.180 | and I bought Becky a nice exercise ball.
00:26:29.320 | (audience laughing)
00:26:30.700 | A health-conscious gift, an economic gift.
00:26:33.700 | And to my astonishment,
00:26:37.080 | the exercise ball was not well-received
00:26:40.540 | on this second Valentine's Day.
00:26:42.380 | And Valentine's Day number three came around,
00:26:45.420 | and at a few weeks before this third Valentine's Day,
00:26:47.820 | Becky sat me down, looked straight in my eyes,
00:26:50.820 | and said, "My favorite flowers are peonies.
00:26:55.380 | (audience laughing)
00:26:56.500 | "I like Ferrero Rocher three-pack.
00:27:00.160 | "Here is a card.
00:27:02.440 | "Write something nice in it.
00:27:04.480 | "Perhaps include a nice, meaningful Bible verse."
00:27:08.020 | So she spelled it out for me,
00:27:10.020 | and she gave me explicit and easy-to-follow instructions.
00:27:14.980 | She left nothing to guesswork.
00:27:16.980 | She left nothing to chance.
00:27:19.980 | And we have since celebrated 18 additional Valentine's Day,
00:27:22.780 | and since then, I believe I've done objectively well.
00:27:26.980 | Valentine's Day does not upset my wife anymore.
00:27:31.260 | Since then, I have not once done nothing.
00:27:34.680 | There are always flowers on Valentine's Day.
00:27:36.620 | There's always a card.
00:27:38.420 | And I think it's been a combination
00:27:39.920 | of her lowered expectations,
00:27:41.620 | my growth and understanding of my wife's heart,
00:27:44.460 | and overall improvement in communication.
00:27:47.380 | So you see, the problem early on
00:27:49.300 | was that Becky assumed I could read her mind.
00:27:52.840 | But she learned quickly that I'm pretty dense,
00:27:56.500 | that I could not read her mind,
00:27:58.940 | and over the past 20 years,
00:28:00.580 | she's left less and less of our relationship to guesswork.
00:28:05.500 | So here's a second public service announcement.
00:28:07.500 | Sisters, if you want to leave it to chance and guesswork,
00:28:11.080 | you are setting yourself up for disappointment
00:28:13.740 | because we men will pretty much guess
00:28:17.140 | incorrectly 100% of the time.
00:28:20.980 | Amen?
00:28:23.140 | All right.
00:28:24.060 | I don't know if you should amen to that.
00:28:25.740 | And some of you guys are wise, you just kept it closed.
00:28:29.260 | On this side of eternity, most of our relationships,
00:28:32.620 | and I'm not just talking about romantic relationships,
00:28:34.700 | they require some degree of guesswork.
00:28:37.740 | Many relationships require some trial and error,
00:28:40.880 | and then some adjustments.
00:28:43.180 | And on this side of eternity, because of sin,
00:28:45.060 | no matter how intimate a relationship between two people,
00:28:49.140 | communication will always be corrupted and flawed.
00:28:53.700 | And no matter how deep a love shared between two parties,
00:28:57.460 | it's inevitable that someone will misspeak
00:29:00.260 | and that someone will mishear,
00:29:02.820 | and there will always be miscommunication.
00:29:05.120 | And sin and words spoken in and through sin
00:29:10.580 | separate people.
00:29:13.020 | They always separate.
00:29:15.260 | They always drive a wedge into every relationship.
00:29:18.240 | Our speaking is broken.
00:29:21.740 | Our hearing is broken.
00:29:24.220 | Our understanding is limited.
00:29:26.220 | Our biases and our prejudices are strong.
00:29:30.340 | Our judgment is often imperfect and reckless.
00:29:35.240 | We are all broken and our communication is broken.
00:29:38.080 | The fall of man and the entrance of sin into the world
00:29:41.500 | didn't just damage human relationships,
00:29:44.060 | but it also greatly corrupted man's understanding
00:29:46.820 | of the things of God.
00:29:47.920 | Man's sins separate him from his creator.
00:29:52.420 | And unlike sinful and corrupted man,
00:29:56.080 | however, God is incorruptible, God is perfect.
00:30:01.080 | There is no trace of sin or unrighteousness in God
00:30:04.740 | or in what he says.
00:30:07.500 | God is a perfect communicator.
00:30:11.620 | He has never miscommunicated.
00:30:15.160 | And we see in the scriptures that God does not lie
00:30:19.780 | and God cannot lie.
00:30:21.520 | Man may misspeak, man may mishear,
00:30:26.660 | man may miscommunicate, but this is not so with God.
00:30:31.660 | God never miscommunicates.
00:30:35.940 | God never misspeaks.
00:30:38.740 | He's always been explicit and absolutely clear
00:30:41.780 | in communicating what he desires all people to know.
00:30:45.040 | And because our God is the same yesterday, today,
00:30:48.660 | and forever, we know that he will continue to be explicit
00:30:52.980 | and absolutely clear in communicating
00:30:55.460 | what he desires all people to know.
00:30:57.540 | In Micah chapter six, verse eight, it reads,
00:31:01.140 | he has told you, oh man, what is good.
00:31:05.540 | And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
00:31:09.020 | to love, loving kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
00:31:13.180 | Some translations will read, he has shown you, oh man.
00:31:18.180 | The Hebrew word here is higith, which is a very rich verb,
00:31:23.700 | referring to a very clear telling.
00:31:27.260 | So clear that it's almost equivalent to a showing.
00:31:31.280 | So the telling is so clear that you can almost see it.
00:31:35.520 | So here's the feel of this verse.
00:31:37.560 | He has, he gith you, oh man, what is good,
00:31:42.040 | and what does the Lord require of you?
00:31:44.520 | So God never leaves his will to guesswork.
00:31:48.240 | He never calls his people to guess what he's thinking
00:31:51.800 | or what he requires.
00:31:54.040 | God's will for you and for me is very clear,
00:31:56.800 | it's very explicit.
00:31:59.060 | And this has always been the case,
00:32:01.300 | and this will always be the case.
00:32:03.520 | The specific application of his will for our lives
00:32:07.520 | may differ in appearance or how it all unfolds,
00:32:11.700 | but God's will has, is, and always will be the same.
00:32:16.300 | And broadly speaking, it is not difficult
00:32:20.940 | to discern the will of God for our lives.
00:32:23.980 | The problem is not in the clarity of God's communication,
00:32:27.200 | the problem lies in our not liking his will,
00:32:31.700 | rebelliously rejecting it, and then asking for another will.
00:32:36.240 | And we see through the scriptures
00:32:39.460 | that God's communication may be veiled.
00:32:43.000 | And in the instances that it is veiled,
00:32:46.660 | it's veiled only to those who are perishing,
00:32:49.100 | 2 Corinthians 4:3.
00:32:50.640 | It's confused because unregenerate minds
00:32:54.580 | are blinded and deluded.
00:32:57.280 | And when God does speak in mysteries and parables,
00:33:00.320 | Luke 8, 10, he does so to those
00:33:03.440 | who have already hardened their hearts towards him,
00:33:06.420 | so that seeing they may not see,
00:33:09.320 | and hearing they may not understand.
00:33:11.480 | So God always speaks clearly,
00:33:14.920 | and he always proclaims his truths clearly,
00:33:18.480 | and in his speaking and in his proclaiming,
00:33:21.480 | he magnifies and glorifies himself
00:33:24.960 | in and through all of his creation,
00:33:27.380 | and in and through all of his people.
00:33:29.740 | So God will make himself known.
00:33:33.100 | That's the heartbeat of Psalm 19,
00:33:37.260 | which is our text for this morning.
00:33:39.040 | God will make himself known, clearly.
00:33:44.040 | Psalm 19 is one of the most beloved
00:33:47.900 | of all of King David's psalms.
00:33:50.380 | C.S. Lewis has said of Psalm 19,
00:33:52.620 | "I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter,
00:33:56.140 | "and one of the greatest lyrics in all the world."
00:33:59.780 | It's basically a psalm delighting in God's self-disclosure
00:34:04.100 | to all of humanity.
00:34:06.100 | All 14 verses, which are organized in a chiastic structure,
00:34:09.760 | are telling and declaring of the works of God.
00:34:13.860 | And in this psalm, I hope you will soon see,
00:34:16.540 | is also a very clear picture of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:34:21.020 | Psalm 19 is a testimony of the gospel of God.
00:34:26.020 | And so for this morning,
00:34:27.180 | I'm gonna walk us through all of Psalm 19.
00:34:30.020 | I'm gonna break it up into three bite-sized pieces,
00:34:32.580 | into bite-sized testimonies, okay?
00:34:35.460 | Remember, what's a testimony?
00:34:38.340 | Many modern-day church testimonies
00:34:40.260 | focus on how a person felt or what a person did,
00:34:43.500 | but by definition, the word testimony
00:34:45.940 | is a declaration of truth or fact given by a witness.
00:34:51.760 | You guys understand that, right?
00:34:54.340 | A testimony is a simple, factual telling
00:34:57.980 | of something one has seen or observed.
00:35:02.000 | So we'll be looking at the three groups
00:35:04.420 | of testifying witnesses in Psalm 19 and their testimonies,
00:35:09.420 | all testifying to the nature of God
00:35:12.540 | and to the good news of God.
00:35:14.360 | Three witnesses declaring
00:35:16.980 | what they are seeing God proclaim, okay?
00:35:20.440 | So the outline of the passage
00:35:21.980 | and the outline of today's sermon
00:35:23.260 | will follow the thought flow
00:35:25.220 | of these three testimonies concerning God.
00:35:27.360 | First, we'll look at the testimony of the heavens,
00:35:31.500 | verses one through six,
00:35:33.660 | the testimony of the law, verses seven to 10,
00:35:37.700 | and the testimony of God's redeemed servant,
00:35:41.940 | verses 11 to 14.
00:35:44.260 | So that's the big picture, the broad outline.
00:35:48.460 | And before we jump in, I'd like to make a little note
00:35:50.560 | on the poetic books of the Bible.
00:35:53.360 | When we're studying through the scripture,
00:35:54.880 | sometimes the genre of the book will force you to adjust
00:35:58.480 | how you examine the verses in the book.
00:36:01.240 | With poetry, you don't need to analyze
00:36:03.880 | and assess every single detail given.
00:36:06.640 | In poetry, there are very few hidden meanings
00:36:11.440 | that you have to discern.
00:36:12.680 | Usually in poetry, the author is simply painting a picture
00:36:18.240 | with many words.
00:36:20.160 | So keep this in mind because for today's sermon,
00:36:22.600 | I'm not gonna be looking at every single word
00:36:25.000 | in each of the 14 verses, okay?
00:36:27.480 | So let's jump into King David's Psalm.
00:36:29.920 | It'll help for you to keep your Bibles open to Psalm 19.
00:36:33.920 | Verse one, the heavens are telling of the glory of God,
00:36:38.920 | and their expanse is declaring the work of his hands.
00:36:44.000 | So verse one is a summary statement
00:36:47.080 | of the majestic creator God.
00:36:49.200 | And the focus in this first half of the psalm
00:36:52.700 | is on God's creative power.
00:36:55.440 | The heavens and the expanse and all that it is contained
00:36:59.580 | within it are declaring God's glory.
00:37:02.960 | By the fiat of his power, God spoke the sun and the moon
00:37:06.720 | and the stars and the rest of creation into existence
00:37:09.880 | under this tent of the heavens.
00:37:12.640 | And the creative power of God was observable
00:37:14.740 | in the beginning, and it's still very observable
00:37:17.640 | for us today.
00:37:19.020 | So everything under the heavens and under this expanse
00:37:23.000 | are telling the glories of God.
00:37:26.160 | That's verse one.
00:37:27.920 | So verse two reads, day to day pours forth speech,
00:37:32.920 | and night to night reveals knowledge.
00:37:36.680 | There is no speech, nor are there words.
00:37:40.560 | Their voice is not heard.
00:37:43.200 | So there's a paradox here.
00:37:44.720 | There's a ton of speech without speech, without words.
00:37:51.580 | Day after day, all of creation is pouring forth speech.
00:37:58.260 | It's literally flooding with speech and declarations
00:38:03.860 | on the nature of God.
00:38:05.460 | Night to night is revealing and showing knowledge,
00:38:09.420 | and the nights also are doing this without words.
00:38:13.880 | These declarations are neither audible nor spoken,
00:38:18.140 | but on every fabric of creation,
00:38:20.820 | there is an imprint of the glory of God.
00:38:24.280 | God's fingerprints, so to speak,
00:38:26.520 | and his signatures are everywhere.
00:38:28.820 | And the knowledge of God and information about God
00:38:33.460 | is being declared through everything under the heavens,
00:38:37.220 | under this expanse.
00:38:38.800 | Okay, verse four.
00:38:40.540 | Their line has gone throughout all the earth,
00:38:43.000 | and their utterances to the end of the world.
00:38:45.840 | In them he has placed a tent for the sun,
00:38:50.640 | which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
00:38:53.400 | it rejoices as a strong man to run his course.
00:38:56.480 | Its rising is from one end of the heavens,
00:38:58.800 | and its circuit to the other end of them,
00:39:00.880 | and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
00:39:04.680 | So here David hones in on the splendor of the sun.
00:39:08.360 | From David's vantage point,
00:39:11.680 | this sky is the largest and vastest thing
00:39:15.040 | that he can behold in all of creation.
00:39:17.180 | And the little sun that he sees
00:39:21.320 | is the most glorious and mysterious thing
00:39:24.320 | moving through this expanse.
00:39:27.340 | It's something so bright
00:39:28.960 | that he could not gaze at it directly.
00:39:32.720 | I mean, how many of you guys have tried to look at the sun?
00:39:34.700 | At least once in your life.
00:39:36.320 | Have you tried it again?
00:39:37.160 | Probably not.
00:39:38.000 | It's like, oh, right?
00:39:38.860 | It's brilliant.
00:39:39.960 | This little sun
00:39:43.360 | daily lights up the entire world,
00:39:47.720 | and I can almost imagine a young shepherd boy, David,
00:39:50.800 | laying on the grass, looking up at the sky,
00:39:54.360 | pondering the heavens and the movement of the sun.
00:39:57.180 | In our culture, at a wedding,
00:40:01.800 | all eyes are always supposed to be on whom?
00:40:04.800 | The bride, okay?
00:40:08.400 | But in the ancient Near East,
00:40:10.200 | all eyes were on the groom.
00:40:13.040 | Sorry, ladies.
00:40:14.080 | In verse five, David likens the daily rise of the sun

00:42:12.480 | And those are just a few beautiful places in America.
00:42:16.420 | The world that God has created is stunning.

00:46:05.420 | are declaring the works of his hands,
00:46:07.240 | and this is the testimony of this first witness.
00:46:11.700 | Psalm 19, one again, the heavens are telling
00:46:14.720 | of the glory of God, and their expanse
00:46:17.440 | is declaring the work of his hands.
00:46:21.120 | Secondly, we're gonna be looking at verses seven to 10,
00:46:23.840 | the testimony of the law, the declared word of God.
00:46:27.760 | In verse seven, we have a shift in subjects
00:46:31.320 | from God's creation to God's law, the Torah,
00:46:36.160 | which is a comprehensive term for God's revealed will.
00:46:40.800 | The word law here is used broadly,
00:46:43.760 | and not so much in reference to the Mosaic law,
00:46:47.280 | but just God's revealed word.
00:46:50.000 | All scripture is fiat nustas, it's all God breathed,
00:46:54.800 | and scripture has always been God's primary means
00:46:58.200 | of revealing his heart and his will to mankind.
00:47:00.560 | Through what has been created, we see God's nature,
00:47:05.960 | but through what has been declared and written,
00:47:09.800 | we see God's heart.
00:47:11.400 | We are first taught that God is a jealous God,
00:47:16.320 | but we are taught that this jealous God,
00:47:19.960 | who has a right to be jealous, is unlimited in patience,
00:47:24.960 | is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger
00:47:28.180 | and abounding in loving kindness.
00:47:33.240 | We are taught in the scriptures of God's desires.
00:47:36.560 | We are taught of his will, and his holiness,
00:47:42.620 | and his affections, and we're taught all of these things
00:47:47.400 | through what has been spoken and subsequently written down.
00:47:50.320 | You see, God desires to be known.
00:47:55.140 | God desires to be known by you and by me,
00:48:02.920 | and he articulates himself very clearly
00:48:06.920 | so that you and I can understand,
00:48:08.720 | and his desire for all eternity is actually to know us
00:48:15.480 | and have us know him.
00:48:17.760 | John 17, three, now this is eternal life,
00:48:20.760 | that they may know you, the only true God in Jesus Christ,
00:48:23.720 | whom you have sent.
00:48:24.960 | Eternal life is getting to be awed and amazed
00:48:30.200 | and wowed by God and knowledge of God
00:48:34.400 | each and every day for all eternity.
00:48:38.740 | So God's word is what the focus is in Psalm 19, seven to 10.
00:48:45.360 | It reads, "The law of the Lord is perfect,
00:48:48.440 | "restoring the soul.
00:48:50.440 | "The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
00:48:54.280 | "The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.
00:48:57.760 | "The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
00:49:01.840 | "The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.
00:49:05.120 | "The judgments of the Lord are true,
00:49:06.700 | "they are righteous altogether."
00:49:08.320 | So starting in verse seven,
00:49:10.080 | God is referred to as a more personal God.
00:49:15.200 | He is El in verse one.
00:49:17.440 | The heavens are telling the glory of El,
00:49:20.680 | but in this latter half, the personal name of God, Yahweh,
00:49:24.880 | is used seven times.
00:49:27.720 | Now we don't need to go into each the details
00:49:30.200 | as to what the law, the testimony, the precepts,
00:49:32.480 | commandment, fear, judgments, what they specifically are.
00:49:36.040 | All six of those are different terms
00:49:37.720 | for God's revealed will or God's word.
00:49:41.240 | But in this section,
00:49:43.320 | King David says that the word of God, it restores,
00:49:47.160 | it makes wise, it causes joy,
00:49:50.360 | it enlightens and illuminates, it endures.
00:49:54.200 | And the last statement is righteous altogether.
00:49:57.200 | And you can just understand this simply as
00:50:00.880 | the word of God makes whole.
00:50:04.120 | It brings wholeness.
00:50:06.360 | There's a sense of shalom in this,
00:50:09.040 | restored as to how things should be.

00:50:17.360 | in multiple differing cultures,
00:50:19.380 | geographical, historical contexts.
00:50:22.280 | It spans over 1,500 years
00:50:24.600 | and it's recorded through more than 40 different men.
00:50:27.880 | None of the men who wrote down the Holy Scripture
00:50:31.180 | were writers by trade.
00:50:33.040 | Moses was a prince and a shepherd,
00:50:34.800 | Joshua was a general, David was a king,
00:50:37.560 | Ezekiel was a priest, there were musicians,
00:50:39.680 | tax collectors, scribes, physicians and fishermen.
00:50:42.920 | 66 books, three original languages, 1,500 years,
00:50:45.680 | 40 different writers, but one author,
00:50:50.040 | the Holy Spirit of God, who again,
00:50:53.040 | clearly wants to make himself known to all people.
00:50:58.040 | 2 Peter 1:21 reads, "But know this first of all,
00:51:05.080 | "that no prophecy of Scripture
00:51:06.740 | "is a matter of one's own interpretation.
00:51:09.540 | "For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will,
00:51:12.500 | "but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."
00:51:17.520 | And because the Bible was written by one primary author,
00:51:21.540 | there's a singular main message,
00:51:24.400 | one meta-narrative contained within.
00:51:28.240 | And this is what it is.
00:51:29.600 | Holy God will reconcile sinful man to himself
00:51:34.600 | and redeem him through his own provision
00:51:39.900 | of a perfect savior and atoning sacrifice.
00:51:42.960 | And I'm gonna repeat that for you.

00:51:52.820 | of a perfect savior, atoning sacrifice.
00:51:56.140 | Genesis to Revelation, one story.
00:52:00.400 | And in many ways, this statement here

00:52:06.640 | We're a Bible church, so I won't expound too much more

00:52:25.940 | And I'm gonna look at verse 10.
00:52:28.840 | And it reads, "They are more desirable than gold.
00:52:34.680 | "Yes, than much fine gold.
00:52:38.280 | "Sweeter also than honey
00:52:40.840 | "in the drippings of the honeycomb."

00:52:45.200 | Or in all honesty, would you rather have the gold
00:52:52.400 | than the honey?
00:52:53.240 | Or the job, the degree, the spouse, the baby?
00:53:00.800 | Are the words of God,
00:53:10.760 | that help you know the creator of the universe,
00:53:14.640 | is that invaluable to you?
00:53:16.920 | Is that more desirable to you

00:53:39.080 | and honey was the sweetest substance
00:53:41.160 | known to people at the time.
