00:00:10.460 | [MUSIC - "POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE"]
00:00:39.960 | All right.
00:00:40.460 | Good morning, church family.
00:00:41.400 | Happy Lord's Day.
00:00:42.220 | I hope you had a good week in the Lord.
00:00:43.680 | We're going to go ahead and get started with our service
00:00:45.920 | this morning as we praise to the Lord.
00:00:48.420 | (SINGING) Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
00:01:04.900 | the King of creation, O my soul, praise him,
00:01:15.380 | for he is thy health and salvation.
00:01:17.880 | All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near.
00:01:32.360 | Praise him in glad adoration.
00:01:34.860 | Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigns.
00:01:57.840 | Shelters be under his wings, yet so gently sustaining.
00:02:02.840 | Hast thou not seen how thy desires have been?
00:02:17.340 | Planted in what he ordained?
00:02:20.840 | Amen.
00:02:21.340 | Praise to the Lord.
00:02:31.340 | Praise to the Lord.
00:02:33.320 | He does prosper in thy work independently.
00:02:42.820 | Surely his goodness and mercy indeed we attend thee.
00:02:49.800 | Father, I do what the Almighty can do.
00:03:02.300 | With his love we give thanks.
00:03:06.280 | [MUSIC - "PRAISE TO THE LORD"]
00:03:27.780 | Praise to the Lord, the Lord, thou that takest me adore him.
00:03:36.760 | All that has life and breath, thou that placest before him.
00:03:45.760 | Like the heaven sent from his people that day.
00:03:53.260 | Like the heaven sent from his people that day.
00:03:59.760 | [MUSIC - "PRAISE TO THE LORD"]
00:04:03.240 | [MUSIC - "PRAISE TO THE LORD"]
00:04:27.220 | All right.
00:04:27.720 | Good morning.
00:04:28.480 | Welcome to Brick Community Church.
00:04:32.000 | Again, as you guys know, our Taiwan team departed yesterday.
00:04:35.800 | So please continue to keep them in your prayers.
00:04:37.880 | They'll be back on the 28th and present what
00:04:40.800 | they were able to do over there.
00:04:42.440 | So please continue to keep them in prayer.
00:04:44.640 | This week, we have praise and prayer.
00:04:46.320 | So we don't have regular Bible study.
00:04:47.860 | So please try to come to church a little bit earlier.
00:04:51.920 | Obviously, there is extra parking that we have
00:04:55.140 | and shuttles that are going around.
00:04:56.600 | So try to please come to church a little bit earlier so
00:04:59.400 | that we can start right at 730.
00:05:02.320 | We have a men's ministry fellowship
00:05:03.960 | that's happening on Saturday, November 9th.
00:05:07.200 | At the fellowship, Paul, that's a Saturday.
00:05:09.760 | And basically, this time around, we
00:05:11.360 | have some older men who've been walking
00:05:13.380 | with the Lord for a while and have obviously
00:05:16.720 | been married for a while and raised children.
00:05:19.040 | And so we're going to be having a Q&A session
00:05:21.960 | for the rest of the church.
00:05:23.580 | And so we're going to be picking their brains of what it was like
00:05:26.280 | when they were younger, what kind of struggles
00:05:28.200 | they went through getting married, raising kids,
00:05:30.800 | and dating, and all that stuff that the younger men, I think,
00:05:34.800 | would benefit to hear.
00:05:36.860 | And so please sign up for that.
00:05:38.160 | That's happening on November 9th.
00:05:40.640 | Operation Christmas Child, our sister's ministry
00:05:45.640 | is sponsoring, again, for our Christmas outreach.
00:05:49.000 | And so the shoebox that they're making,
00:05:51.920 | there's a station outside.
00:05:53.960 | As you're coming in, you probably saw them.
00:05:55.720 | But as you're going out, if you sign up,
00:05:57.520 | they'll give you a box.
00:05:58.520 | And they'll give you instructions.
00:05:59.940 | So please sign up for that if you
00:06:01.720 | want to participate in that.
00:06:03.600 | FAM 245, if you are married three years or less,
00:06:07.080 | there's a workshop that's happening on Saturday,
00:06:11.160 | November 16th at 10:30 AM.
00:06:14.200 | And so please come.
00:06:15.200 | The topic for this session is going
00:06:16.920 | to be biblical communication.
00:06:19.920 | And then Thanksgiving outreach dinner,
00:06:21.700 | our outreach department is sponsoring an outreach dinner
00:06:24.680 | Saturday, November 16th at 6 PM.
00:06:27.600 | And so this is for friends and family,
00:06:30.000 | co-workers that you want to invite.
00:06:31.760 | They'll have a dinner talking about Thanksgiving,
00:06:34.480 | share the gospel, an opportunity to ask questions.
00:06:37.200 | And so if you are interested in coming or bringing somebody
00:06:40.040 | to that, please sign up for that.
00:06:41.720 | Again, the sign-up tables will be outside as well or online.
00:06:47.600 | Berean men's, women's flag football, that's November 30th.
00:06:51.800 | So that's after Thanksgiving, after you've eaten too much.
00:06:56.200 | And then on Saturday--
00:06:58.040 | so this before Sunday, it's usually a down Sunday.
00:07:01.380 | So you've done all your shopping,
00:07:02.760 | you've done all your eating, hopefully
00:07:04.380 | visiting your family.
00:07:06.080 | And then on that Saturday, the men and women
00:07:08.440 | are going to be having a flag football day.
00:07:10.520 | So if you want to come and participate
00:07:12.520 | or if you want to just come and watch.
00:07:14.840 | But the sign-up for that is happening.
00:07:16.460 | So if you go outside, there will be a sign-up table for that
00:07:18.960 | as well for men and women.
00:07:21.600 | And I think that it's going to be at the same park,
00:07:23.680 | November 30th.
00:07:25.720 | And then lastly, our sisters are, again,
00:07:27.960 | sponsoring Angel Tree Christmas.
00:07:30.560 | The last day to sign up for this is November 1st.
00:07:33.280 | Basically, this ministry helps families
00:07:36.520 | connect with loved ones who are in prison.
00:07:39.860 | And so it helps them to get the funds and things that they
00:07:42.600 | need to connect with them.
00:07:43.880 | So if you want to provide for that, please visit the table,
00:07:46.380 | and they'll give you instructions for that as well.
00:07:48.840 | I think that's it for the announcements.
00:07:50.520 | Let me pray for us and give you an opportunity to give.
00:07:52.400 | And again, if you have a physical offering,
00:07:54.320 | there's a box that you can go visit on the way out.
00:07:57.520 | OK, let's pray.
00:08:00.440 | Father, we thank you so much for today.
00:08:02.320 | We pray that you would help us to lift our eyes,
00:08:10.040 | to see Christ and his glory in a greater light.
00:08:15.240 | Help us, Lord God, in the busyness of schedules,
00:08:18.920 | the entanglements, Lord God, with this life,
00:08:22.880 | that you would help us to see clearly how short this life is,
00:08:28.360 | that we are a vapor that comes and disappears,
00:08:33.440 | that we would entrust and invest things that are eternal.
00:08:38.040 | I pray that this worship that we give,
00:08:41.600 | that by your Holy Spirit, that we
00:08:43.200 | be able to give as an abundance of gratitude and thanksgiving
00:08:46.120 | in our hearts.
00:08:47.960 | Help us, Lord God, if we have come
00:08:49.400 | into this room with grumbling and anxiousness,
00:08:53.560 | that you would help us, Lord God, to know you in a deeper
00:08:55.960 | way, that we would drink of the living water and the living
00:08:59.680 | bread, that we may know you, that we may proclaim you
00:09:04.760 | wherever you send us.
00:09:06.640 | May the offering that we give would
00:09:08.200 | be an expression of this gratitude
00:09:10.240 | and may it be multiplied for the sake of your kingdom.
00:09:12.920 | In Jesus' name, we pray.
00:09:14.320 | Amen.
00:09:14.980 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:09:18.500 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:09:21.980 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:09:25.900 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:09:29.380 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:09:58.340 | Church family, would you please stand for worship
00:10:00.420 | and take a moment to greet those around you?
00:10:02.300 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:10:06.700 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:10:10.180 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:10:26.620 | [MUSIC - "HOW WONDERFUL MY SOUL IS"]
00:10:30.100 | I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene
00:10:50.820 | and wonder how he could love me, a sinner condemned, unclean.
00:11:03.820 | Stand amazed.
00:11:05.300 | Stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene
00:11:18.820 | and wonder how he could love me, a sinner condemned, unclean.
00:11:33.300 | How marvelous, how wonderful let my soul shall ever be.
00:11:47.300 | How marvelous, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me.
00:12:10.780 | He took my sins.
00:12:13.260 | He took my sins and my sorrows.
00:12:20.740 | He made them his very own.
00:12:27.220 | He bore the burden to Calvary and suffered and died alone.
00:12:42.180 | How marvelous, how wonderful let my soul shall ever be.
00:12:56.660 | How marvelous, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me.
00:13:22.620 | And when the ransomed in glory, his face I last shall see,
00:13:36.580 | will be my joy through the ages to sing of his love for me.
00:13:49.060 | How marvelous.
00:13:51.060 | How marvelous, how wonderful let my soul shall ever be.
00:14:05.060 | How marvelous, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me.
00:14:20.060 | How marvelous, how wonderful let my soul shall ever be.
00:14:35.060 | How marvelous, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me.
00:14:47.540 | Lord of every age, author of my faith, first and last the same,
00:15:09.020 | name above all names, crowned in majesty, glorious Prince of Peace.
00:15:24.020 | Throne that guides right hand, worth at his command, worth at his command.
00:15:36.020 | Jesus, Lamb of God, how great you are.
00:15:45.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:15:51.020 | Every knee bows down at your renown.
00:15:59.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:16:21.020 | Merciful and free, lover of the least.
00:16:28.020 | Generous and meek, protector of the weak.
00:16:35.020 | Sacrifice to death, arrest your final breath.
00:16:42.020 | Dive the world to save, to overcome the grave, to overcome the grave.
00:16:54.020 | Jesus, Lamb of God, how great you are.
00:17:03.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:17:09.020 | Every knee bows down at your renown.
00:17:17.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:17:23.020 | You reign forever, you reign forever, you reign forever, you reign forever.
00:17:37.020 | You reign forever, you reign forever, you reign forever, you reign forever.
00:17:54.020 | Jesus, Lamb of God, how great you are.
00:18:03.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:18:09.020 | Every knee bows down at your renown.
00:18:17.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:18:23.020 | Jesus, Lamb of God, how great you are.
00:18:31.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:18:37.020 | Every knee bows down at your renown.
00:18:45.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:18:52.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:19:02.020 | There is no other Savior.
00:19:12.020 | If you can turn your Bibles with me to Luke, Chapter 9.
00:19:16.020 | We'll be reading from verse 28 to 36.
00:19:20.020 | Luke, Chapter 9, verse 28 through 36.
00:19:25.020 | Again, reading out of the NASB.
00:19:29.020 | Some eight days after these sayings, he took along Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
00:19:37.020 | And while he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing became white and gleaming.
00:19:43.020 | And behold, two men were talking with him, and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
00:19:55.020 | Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
00:20:03.020 | And as these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah," not realizing what he was saying.
00:20:16.020 | While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
00:20:25.020 | Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my son, my chosen one. Listen to him."
00:20:31.020 | And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone, and they kept silent and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
00:20:40.020 | Let's pray.
00:20:42.020 | Father, give us understanding, give us ears to hear, give us surrendered wills, Father God, that as you are the potter and we are the clay, that we may be molded according to what you desire.
00:21:00.020 | Father, we ask that you would anoint this time with your blessing and illumination. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
00:21:11.020 | I think most of you guys by this time have seen the A.I.s that's coming on our social media.
00:21:21.020 | And it's so good now that they can take a video and place a celebrity's face on it and make it say whatever it wants to say.
00:21:29.020 | Especially now we are going into the political season, and so much of the information that's being passed out there is being altered.
00:21:37.020 | And so the opinions that we have are often altered opinions that are deliberately sent out.
00:21:46.020 | Whether it is an article or a podcast or a clip of a movie, and some with very bad intentions in order to slander and to get the false thoughts planted in people's heads.
00:21:59.020 | Now, some of it may be just entertaining, but some of it is very dangerous because false things are being spread like wildfire.
00:22:08.020 | The difference between now and the other periods is that it spreads so quickly and easily.
00:22:15.020 | And some things that you hold so dearly in saying this is truth may be founded upon things that may not be true with very ill intentions.
00:22:25.020 | Now, this has always been the case because the Bible says that our enemy is a father of lies.
00:22:32.020 | And so the primary way that he attacks Christian faith is through lies, through deception.
00:22:41.020 | And so we have been warned over and over again to remain sober, to seek truth, to discern what is right, what is wrong, what is from God, and what is from the devil.
00:22:54.020 | We have to be vigilant, especially as we are in a period where we have election coming up in a few weeks.
00:23:04.020 | And I believe is one of the most important elections that we've had in, at least in my lifetime, just because of what is being fought for.
00:23:15.020 | I've never seen Christianity being this openly challenged, at least as long as I've been a Christian,
00:23:22.020 | where this false thinking has entered into the church and so many lies are being repeated like it's truth.
00:23:30.020 | Again, my point today is not to get you to, you know, like this.
00:23:35.020 | It's not for political purposes, right, although it is important.
00:23:39.020 | It's so that we may pay attention to what the scripture says.
00:23:43.020 | My question is, how did you get here this morning?
00:23:48.020 | What caused you to say that you believe in Jesus and to follow Christ?
00:23:53.020 | What brought you here?
00:23:56.020 | Did you examine the scriptures and you came to a point where you said, you know what, I believe what Jesus said, what he did was true.
00:24:05.020 | And the testimony of the disciples and the early Christians are true. I examined it and I've come to believe that it is true.
00:24:13.020 | How many of you came because you grew up in a church and it was easier to stay on the boat than to get off?
00:24:20.020 | How many of you sit without day after day, week after week, month after month, because you're afraid of the consequence of seeking the truth?
00:24:30.020 | You're not sure if you believe, even though you come to church.
00:24:35.020 | You're not absolutely convinced, so you kind of stay in the middle ground because if you seek the truth,
00:24:41.020 | either it will disturb you and will convict you that where you are is not where God wants you to be.
00:24:52.020 | And so there's a bit of fear that you're going to be convicted enough to pick up your cross,
00:25:00.020 | to go where you don't want to go, to do things that you don't want to do, to say things that you don't want to say.
00:25:06.020 | Or you may seek the truth and maybe the end result of that is I don't really believe this.
00:25:13.020 | So therefore, you must leave the church. You must leave your traditions and the things that you work so hard to build.
00:25:23.020 | And so you deliberately choose to stay right in the middle where you can enjoy the benefits of Christianity,
00:25:32.020 | yet never fully committing yourself to Christ.
00:25:36.020 | The Bible does not give us room for that.
00:25:40.020 | Either Christ was a crazy man. He said he was God.
00:25:47.020 | He said that he was going to take away the sins of the world.
00:25:52.020 | We believe that a man came back from the dead, that he created us, that after we die, that's where real life begins.
00:26:02.020 | That's what we proclaim to believe. There's no middle ground to that.
00:26:06.020 | Either he was a madman deceiving the whole world, or he is who he said he was. Which is it?
00:26:13.020 | If you say he was a madman, you're in the wrong place.
00:26:15.020 | Every single minute that you spend at church is wasted time.
00:26:20.020 | Every dollar that you give, every Sunday morning that you could have gone somewhere else and traveled,
00:26:25.020 | and made more money, made connections, you're wasting your time here.
00:26:30.020 | Or, if Christ is who he really said he was, maybe, maybe we're not really following Christ.
00:26:44.020 | That we're satisfied with being at church.
00:26:49.020 | And so the question that Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?"
00:26:54.020 | Is the most important question, no matter where you are, even if you are sick, even if you have only 10 days to live.
00:27:00.020 | The most important question that you need to ask is, "Who do you say he is?"
00:27:06.020 | Do you actually believe that?
00:27:09.020 | Is your life consistent with that confession?
00:27:12.020 | Or is your life consistent with a cultural Christianity?
00:27:17.020 | That allows you to feel safe because everybody else is doing what you're doing.
00:27:23.020 | Even if everybody else might be wrong,
00:27:27.020 | broad is the way, and straight is the way that leads to destruction.
00:27:31.020 | Narrow, narrow is the way.
00:27:35.020 | And difficult is the way that leads to eternal life.
00:27:38.020 | And very few will be found in it.
00:27:42.020 | Are you the few?
00:27:45.020 | Are you the few?
00:27:47.020 | Or are you on a broad path where you have chosen the easiest?
00:27:53.020 | And if you've been in the church, you have friends in the church, you have community in the church,
00:27:56.020 | the broad and the easiest thing to do is to stay on that path.
00:28:01.020 | It's not difficult.
00:28:02.020 | In fact, there's quite a bit of consequence if you walk away from your faith.
00:28:08.020 | You'll lose your friends.
00:28:11.020 | Maybe your parents who raised you in the church will be very disappointed.
00:28:16.020 | You're going to lose the community that you worked so hard to build.
00:28:21.020 | And so because of the fear of the consequence of making that decision,
00:28:25.020 | you hold on, not to Christ, but you hold on to superficial Christianity,
00:28:35.020 | where you are warned over and over again.
00:28:37.020 | Not everybody who says to me, "Lord, Lord, shall I enter the kingdom of heaven?"
00:28:41.020 | You hear that, you know that, yet you ignore that out of fear.
00:28:50.020 | Are you following Jesus?
00:28:54.020 | Do you actually believe this?
00:28:57.020 | Jesus has been spending his whole ministry to confirm his identity.
00:29:02.020 | It's to prepare them for what he was about to do at the cross.
00:29:06.020 | So every miracle that he performed was to present his credentials.
00:29:11.020 | He fed the poor.
00:29:13.020 | Yes, they were hungry, but he fed them to show them that the Son of Man
00:29:18.020 | has power and authority to forgive sins.
00:29:22.020 | He healed the sick.
00:29:23.020 | Yes, he had compassion on them, but he did that so that they will know
00:29:28.020 | that that man with same power has the power to forgive sins.
00:29:33.020 | We've seen just in this text that Jesus has power over natural disasters.
00:29:40.020 | He has power over disease.
00:29:44.020 | He had power over demons, and ultimately he had power over death.
00:29:47.020 | And then he turns around to his disciples as he prepares to go to the cross.
00:29:50.020 | "Do you know who I am?"
00:29:53.020 | "Yes."
00:29:55.020 | "Some say you're Elijah, some say you're a prophet, some say you're Jeremiah,
00:29:58.020 | but who do you say?
00:30:00.020 | Who do you say that I am?"
00:30:02.020 | "You are the Christ of the Son of the living God.
00:30:06.020 | God has revealed this to you, and upon this confession I will build my church,
00:30:11.020 | and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it."
00:30:14.020 | But Jesus wasn't done yet.
00:30:16.020 | He wanted to make sure that this confession is going to be solidified
00:30:20.020 | at the transfiguration.
00:30:24.020 | So he's about to head to the cross, and before he heads to the cross,
00:30:28.020 | he takes the three of his disciples, and he reveals to them his ultimate glory,
00:30:34.020 | so that after he resurrects and the lights begin to turn on in their head,
00:30:38.020 | they begin to realize what they saw,
00:30:40.020 | and that becomes the foundation upon which they testify about Jesus,
00:30:44.020 | which has brought us here 2,000 years later.
00:30:49.020 | Every single one of these men gave their lives giving this testimony.
00:30:54.020 | Every single one of these men.
00:30:57.020 | John, he's the only one who didn't die, but he was miserable
00:31:02.020 | because he survived a boiling in the oil,
00:31:06.020 | and then he lived the rest of his life at Patmos writing the book of Revelation,
00:31:10.020 | and he didn't have a comfortable life, every single one of them.
00:31:13.020 | They didn't receive glory. They didn't receive honor.
00:31:15.020 | They didn't receive wealth, but to their death, not only them,
00:31:20.020 | but all the early believers who saw the resurrected Christ,
00:31:23.020 | many of them gave their life giving the same testimony,
00:31:27.020 | and that has brought us here to this day.
00:31:31.020 | Again, the question is, is it that testimony that you believe,
00:31:37.020 | or is it because of tradition?
00:31:40.020 | What brought you here this morning?
00:31:43.020 | Jesus reveals himself to the disciples.
00:31:46.020 | The word "transfigured" literally means to metamorphosize.
00:31:51.020 | Jesus completely is transformed, Luke 9, 29.
00:31:54.020 | And while he was praying, the appearance of his face became different,
00:31:57.020 | and his clothing became white and gleaming.
00:32:00.020 | Literally means flashing like lightning.
00:32:02.020 | He was glorified in his body, and they saw Jesus.
00:32:06.020 | They spent two and a half years walking with Jesus,
00:32:08.020 | but they've never seen Jesus this way.
00:32:10.020 | Matthew's account says Jesus' face shined as the sun.
00:32:15.020 | He was not the same man.
00:32:18.020 | Do you remember when Moses seized God's glory,
00:32:21.020 | even though it was veiled?
00:32:23.020 | That glory just shining off of his face terrified Israelites,
00:32:27.020 | and they begged him to go into the tent,
00:32:31.020 | because that same God that they were terrified of up in the mountain,
00:32:35.020 | just a glimpse of that shining off of his face terrified them.
00:32:39.020 | And so please don't speak to us directly.
00:32:41.020 | They made him put a veil on him and go inside the tent.
00:32:45.020 | That glory was shining off of Jesus' face and his body.
00:32:51.020 | He reveals himself to the disciples.
00:32:56.020 | And like it says in verse 27, "But I say to you truthfully,
00:32:59.020 | there are some of those standing here who will not taste death
00:33:02.020 | until they see the kingdom of God."
00:33:05.020 | Now some people interpret this a different way,
00:33:07.020 | but I think the best way to understand this
00:33:10.020 | is that he's referring to the transfiguration.
00:33:13.020 | That some of them referring to Peter, James, and John
00:33:16.020 | are going to see the king exalted.
00:33:20.020 | They've seen him as a humble servant.
00:33:23.020 | They've seen him serving other people.
00:33:28.020 | But for the first time, they saw the king in his glory.
00:33:32.020 | And I believe that that's what verse 27 is referring to.
00:33:37.020 | Many people see Jesus to this day.
00:33:40.020 | He's this humble king.
00:33:43.020 | And so we look at the humble king,
00:33:45.020 | expecting him to continue to serve us.
00:33:49.020 | As Christians, he is a humble king who was exalted
00:33:51.020 | to the highest place according to Philippians chapter 2.
00:33:55.020 | That because he humbled himself, even death on a cross,
00:33:58.020 | God exalted him to the highest place.
00:34:00.020 | And every knee shall bow, every tongue confess
00:34:02.020 | that Christ is Lord.
00:34:04.020 | And then when John sees the glorified Jesus
00:34:06.020 | in the book of Revelation, this is what John sees.
00:34:09.020 | When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man.
00:34:14.020 | He didn't see Jesus humbled, washing people's feet,
00:34:19.020 | as that may have been his memory of him.
00:34:21.020 | But when John sees him, he saw his glory,
00:34:25.020 | and he fell face down.
00:34:26.020 | And he placed his right hand on me, saying,
00:34:28.020 | do not be afraid.
00:34:29.020 | I am the first and the last, the living one.
00:34:32.020 | And I was dead.
00:34:33.020 | And behold, I am alive forever.
00:34:35.020 | And I have the keys of death and of Hades.
00:34:40.020 | And this is what he meant.
00:34:42.020 | He wanted to show him what was coming,
00:34:46.020 | because he had these three men to testify.
00:34:49.020 | And it's the catalyst of these three men
00:34:51.020 | that has been connected to us all these years.
00:34:54.020 | Now, if you've ever played that game where you stand
00:34:57.020 | in a line of 10 people, and one person says this,
00:34:59.020 | and by the time it gets to the end,
00:35:01.020 | it doesn't sound anything alike.
00:35:02.020 | So some people think that maybe Christianity is like that,
00:35:05.020 | that 2,000 years of being passed down to pass down,
00:35:08.020 | and now what we have today, how do we know?
00:35:12.020 | Well, that's a good question.
00:35:14.020 | Well, we know because we have the same words that they had.
00:35:17.020 | There's no other historical document
00:35:20.020 | that they have it from eyewitnesses like we do.
00:35:23.020 | There's no document.
00:35:24.020 | The closest that we have of any document
00:35:27.020 | from its original is 700 years.
00:35:32.020 | The Bible is only 30, 40 years removed
00:35:36.020 | from the very authors who wrote it.
00:35:37.020 | So that's why we're confident that what they believe
00:35:40.020 | is exactly what we have, because we have those scriptures
00:35:43.020 | from the first century.
00:35:47.020 | We are recipients of these eyewitnesses.
00:35:52.020 | I want to look at these three groups of people today,
00:35:54.020 | the people, Moses and Elijah, and God's voice himself,
00:35:58.020 | and what that means to us today,
00:35:59.020 | and why did God reveal himself in this way
00:36:01.020 | at the transfiguration?
00:36:03.020 | First, he takes the inner three, Peter, John, and James.
00:36:07.020 | Wherever you see the names mentioned of the disciples,
00:36:09.020 | Peter, John, and James comes first.
00:36:12.020 | Because Peter is the leader, John and James
00:36:14.020 | are part of the inner circle.
00:36:16.020 | And I always, and I've mentioned this before,
00:36:18.020 | and this is probably because I'm a middle child,
00:36:20.020 | where is Andrew?
00:36:24.020 | Andrew's the one who introduced all of them to Jesus,
00:36:26.020 | and then he goes to the back seat.
00:36:28.020 | And so maybe it never bothered you
00:36:30.020 | because you've always been the first son,
00:36:32.020 | and you were loved.
00:36:37.020 | Of course I was loved.
00:36:40.020 | But middle children, when they grow up thinking like,
00:36:42.020 | "Oh, don't worry about me."
00:36:45.020 | I'm not exactly sure why Andrew is not part of that,
00:36:47.020 | but I think the simple answer is probably the best answer,
00:36:51.020 | which is Jesus only needed three.
00:36:55.020 | Because a three is a number of confirmation.
00:36:58.020 | All over the scripture, right,
00:36:59.020 | where two or three are gathered together in my name,
00:37:01.020 | the three testify, Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
00:37:04.020 | They say if there's anything against an elder,
00:37:06.020 | make sure it's confirmed with two or three witnesses.
00:37:09.020 | And so over and over again, the Bible says
00:37:11.020 | that three is the number for confirmation,
00:37:14.020 | and so Jesus only really needed three.
00:37:16.020 | Then why not Andrew?
00:37:20.020 | Maybe, and again, this is my guess,
00:37:22.020 | that Peter was clearly the leader of the group,
00:37:26.020 | and John and James, these two brothers,
00:37:28.020 | these sons of thunders, could not be separated.
00:37:31.020 | So probably maybe the most humble of them,
00:37:36.020 | Andrew, maybe was chosen.
00:37:38.020 | Maybe Andrew, Andrew, hopefully you understand.
00:37:41.020 | Your brother needs to be up there.
00:37:43.020 | These sons of thunders, they can't be separated.
00:37:46.020 | They need to be up there, okay?
00:37:48.020 | So this is not in the Bible.
00:37:50.020 | I'm just guessing.
00:37:51.020 | This is middle child exposition, right?
00:37:55.020 | For whatever the reason, these three are there,
00:37:57.020 | and they are repeatedly shown his glory.
00:38:03.020 | Every instance in the Bible where God wants
00:38:05.020 | to present himself and send people out,
00:38:08.020 | he prepares them by showing his glory.
00:38:14.020 | Now today, if somebody wants to prepare for ministry,
00:38:17.020 | you go into seminary, you study a document,
00:38:21.020 | you learn how to do exposition,
00:38:24.020 | and you learn how to present facts to people.
00:38:26.020 | You learn how to organize small group and disciple-making,
00:38:29.020 | but in the Scripture, none of that,
00:38:32.020 | none of that in and of itself is bad,
00:38:35.020 | but every instance in the Scripture
00:38:36.020 | where God wants to use a man,
00:38:38.020 | he opens their eyes to see God's glory.
00:38:43.020 | That was either with Abraham, with Moses,
00:38:45.020 | with Isaiah, with Ezekiel.
00:38:47.020 | Every single person that God wanted to use,
00:38:50.020 | he reveals himself to them,
00:38:52.020 | because what God desires is not people to learn
00:38:56.020 | a bunch of facts and to be trained from other men
00:39:00.020 | how to do other manly things,
00:39:02.020 | and then to regurgitate that to somebody else.
00:39:06.020 | That's why we are called witnesses, to witness.
00:39:11.020 | So the first thing that he does
00:39:13.020 | is to open their eyes to see his glory.
00:39:17.020 | So when they go out and represent
00:39:19.020 | the God that sent them,
00:39:22.020 | that they are able to show them
00:39:23.020 | and to tell them what they saw and experienced,
00:39:27.020 | not simply to go and study
00:39:29.020 | and then to regurgitate what I studied
00:39:31.020 | so that the people can study
00:39:32.020 | and then other people can study
00:39:33.020 | and more people can study.
00:39:36.020 | God reveals himself to men to use him.
00:39:41.020 | In John chapter 114,
00:39:42.020 | John explains this experience in his words.
00:39:47.020 | "And the word became flesh and dwelt among us,
00:39:51.020 | "and we saw his glory,
00:39:52.020 | "and the glory as the only begotten from the Father,
00:39:55.020 | "full of grace and truth."
00:39:57.020 | He said, "We saw it."
00:39:59.020 | We saw that glory.
00:40:01.020 | "We walked with him, we saw his power,
00:40:04.020 | "but at the transfiguration, we saw his glory."
00:40:09.020 | Because through their testimony
00:40:12.020 | and then through the testimony of the disciples
00:40:15.020 | that the hope of the gospel
00:40:16.020 | was going to spread till he comes.
00:40:21.020 | Secondly, he shows himself,
00:40:23.020 | and Moses and Elijah is standing there.
00:40:25.020 | Now why Moses and Elijah?
00:40:28.020 | There's so many great saints.
00:40:30.020 | How come maybe not David?
00:40:32.020 | How come Elisha?
00:40:33.020 | Why not Abraham?
00:40:34.020 | Why was it Moses and Elijah?
00:40:36.020 | If you read the New Testament,
00:40:38.020 | it's pretty clear.
00:40:40.020 | This is not any guesswork
00:40:41.020 | because Christ himself explains.
00:40:45.020 | Moses represents the law
00:40:48.020 | because the law came through Moses.
00:40:50.020 | Elijah represents all the prophets.
00:40:53.020 | And to say Moses and Elijah
00:40:55.020 | represents basically the old covenant,
00:40:57.020 | Old Testament.
00:40:59.020 | And so when they say Moses and Elijah,
00:41:01.020 | it's like saying from our point of view,
00:41:04.020 | Old Testament, New Testament.
00:41:07.020 | So when they say Moses and Elijah,
00:41:10.020 | it's just the first century Jewish way
00:41:11.020 | of saying the Bible.
00:41:14.020 | So Moses and Elijah appear
00:41:17.020 | representing the word of God.
00:41:19.020 | Matthew 5.17, "Do not think that I came
00:41:21.020 | "to abolish the law or the prophets.
00:41:23.020 | "I did not come to abolish,
00:41:24.020 | "but to fulfill the law."
00:41:28.020 | He came because so many prophecies
00:41:31.020 | have come through Moses
00:41:33.020 | and through the prophets.
00:41:36.020 | He says whole life of Christ
00:41:38.020 | and ultimately the glory of Christ
00:41:40.020 | was all predicted and proclaimed
00:41:42.020 | through Moses and the prophets.
00:41:45.020 | Luke 24, verse 27,
00:41:47.020 | "Then beginning with Moses
00:41:48.020 | "and with all the prophets,
00:41:49.020 | "he explained to them
00:41:50.020 | "the things concerning himself
00:41:51.020 | "in all the scriptures."
00:41:54.020 | Again, I've only highlighted a couple
00:41:55.020 | for the sake of time.
00:41:57.020 | Over and over again,
00:41:58.020 | the New Testament says
00:41:59.020 | Moses and the prophets
00:42:00.020 | or the law and the prophets
00:42:02.020 | or Moses and the prophets,
00:42:04.020 | all of it referring to the scriptures.
00:42:08.020 | Well, what is it about the scriptures
00:42:09.020 | that needed to be fulfilled?
00:42:12.020 | Luke 24, 44-48 says,
00:42:15.020 | "Now he said to them,
00:42:16.020 | "'These are my words which I spoke to you
00:42:17.020 | "'while I was still with you,
00:42:19.020 | "'that all things which are written
00:42:20.020 | "'about me in the law
00:42:21.020 | "'of Moses and the prophets
00:42:22.020 | "'and the Psalms must be fulfilled.'"
00:42:24.020 | And then he explains what it is.
00:42:26.020 | "Then he opened their minds
00:42:27.020 | "to understand the scriptures
00:42:28.020 | "and he said to them,
00:42:29.020 | "'Thus it is written
00:42:30.020 | "'that the Christ would suffer
00:42:32.020 | "'and rise again from the dead
00:42:34.020 | "'the third day,
00:42:35.020 | "'and that repentance
00:42:36.020 | "'for forgiveness of sins
00:42:37.020 | "'would be proclaimed in his name
00:42:38.020 | "'to all the nations
00:42:39.020 | "'beginning from Jerusalem.
00:42:41.020 | "'You are witnesses of these things.'"
00:42:44.020 | Moses and the prophets
00:42:46.020 | prophesied about the coming of Christ,
00:42:49.020 | about his life,
00:42:50.020 | about his death,
00:42:51.020 | and about his resurrection.
00:42:53.020 | And he said,
00:42:54.020 | "Moses and Elijah
00:42:56.020 | "represents all those prophecies."
00:42:59.020 | So it's pretty clear
00:43:01.020 | why they were there.
00:43:03.020 | Because Jesus said from the beginning,
00:43:05.020 | "I've not come to abolish it.
00:43:06.020 | "I didn't come to bring something new.
00:43:07.020 | "I came to fulfill
00:43:09.020 | "what God has been preparing
00:43:11.020 | "for all this time."
00:43:13.020 | They weren't just, you know,
00:43:14.020 | "Jesus is about to move on
00:43:15.020 | "to a new covenant."
00:43:16.020 | He said, "No, this is a continuation
00:43:17.020 | "of the covenant that God made."
00:43:20.020 | And that's why they were there.
00:43:23.020 | But the ultimate testimony
00:43:25.020 | comes from God himself.
00:43:28.020 | He says that after having
00:43:30.020 | the conversation,
00:43:33.020 | the Father shows up in the cloud,
00:43:36.020 | and he speaks directly
00:43:38.020 | to confirm who Jesus is.
00:43:41.020 | Now, there's a difference here
00:43:43.020 | than when Jesus was being baptized,
00:43:45.020 | God, the clouds open up,
00:43:47.020 | and he says, "This is my son
00:43:48.020 | "in whom I am pleased."
00:43:52.020 | But here, he actually
00:43:54.020 | shows up in the cloud,
00:43:56.020 | and the disciples enter
00:43:57.020 | into the cloud,
00:43:58.020 | and he says, "Fear fall upon them."
00:44:01.020 | Every instance in the Bible
00:44:03.020 | where God's presence shows up,
00:44:06.020 | he is veiled, oftentimes,
00:44:08.020 | in the cloud.
00:44:11.020 | And we know exactly why.
00:44:13.020 | Because his presence is terrifying.
00:44:17.020 | A sinful man cannot be
00:44:18.020 | in the presence of this holy God
00:44:20.020 | and see his face and live.
00:44:23.020 | We see in Mount Sinai
00:44:24.020 | where Moses says,
00:44:25.020 | "I want to see your glory,"
00:44:26.020 | and he says, "If I show you my glory,
00:44:28.020 | "you cannot live,
00:44:29.020 | "but I will protect you
00:44:30.020 | "and cover you,
00:44:31.020 | "and as I pass by,
00:44:32.020 | "you will see my glory
00:44:34.020 | "from behind."
00:44:35.020 | And that glory that he saw
00:44:37.020 | a glimpse of,
00:44:39.020 | that shined off of his face,
00:44:41.020 | terrified the nation of Israel.
00:44:45.020 | It was that glory that was coming.
00:44:49.020 | In fact, in Exodus 34-35,
00:44:52.020 | it says, "Then the cloud
00:44:53.020 | "covered the tent of meeting,
00:44:54.020 | "and the glory of the Lord
00:44:55.020 | "filled the tabernacle.
00:44:57.020 | "Moses was not able
00:44:58.020 | "to enter the tent of meeting
00:44:59.020 | "because of the cloud
00:45:00.020 | "had settled on it,
00:45:01.020 | "and the glory of the Lord
00:45:02.020 | "filled the tabernacle."
00:45:05.020 | The tabernacle was not
00:45:07.020 | a friendly place.
00:45:09.020 | He said, "Oh, you know,
00:45:10.020 | "people gave sacrifices,
00:45:12.020 | "and it was at the center
00:45:13.020 | "of the camp
00:45:14.020 | "of the 12 tribes."
00:45:16.020 | Can you imagine the fear
00:45:17.020 | that fell upon them
00:45:18.020 | as soon as the first person died
00:45:21.020 | because they mishandled the offering?
00:45:23.020 | And that happened
00:45:24.020 | in the very beginning,
00:45:26.020 | in Leviticus chapter 10,
00:45:28.020 | Adab and Nebihu.
00:45:31.020 | Can you imagine the fear
00:45:33.020 | that fell upon them
00:45:34.020 | that that which caused terror
00:45:36.020 | up in the mountain
00:45:37.020 | filled the tabernacle,
00:45:39.020 | but it was the tabernacle
00:45:40.020 | that kept them safe.
00:45:42.020 | It was the presence
00:45:43.020 | of their God
00:45:44.020 | as they were wandering
00:45:45.020 | in the desert
00:45:46.020 | that kept them safe
00:45:47.020 | from all the other
00:45:48.020 | more powerful nations
00:45:49.020 | to come and attack them,
00:45:51.020 | and they knew it.
00:45:52.020 | Even though they were terrified
00:45:53.020 | of His presence,
00:45:54.020 | they knew only His presence
00:45:56.020 | would keep them safe
00:45:57.020 | from their enemies.
00:46:00.020 | "This same glory
00:46:01.020 | "that came the tabernacle
00:46:03.020 | "and eventually landed
00:46:04.020 | "upon the temple,"
00:46:06.020 | we see in Ezekiel chapter 10
00:46:08.020 | a very sad scene
00:46:11.020 | where repeatedly
00:46:12.020 | over and over again,
00:46:13.020 | God sends His prophets
00:46:14.020 | to warn them
00:46:15.020 | to turn from their sins
00:46:16.020 | or else the glory of God
00:46:17.020 | would leave Israel.
00:46:19.020 | Ezekiel chapter 10,
00:46:21.020 | after the Babylonians come
00:46:23.020 | and take them into captivity,
00:46:24.020 | in captivity,
00:46:25.020 | God tells Ezekiel
00:46:27.020 | that He will withdraw
00:46:28.020 | His presence from Israel.
00:46:31.020 | Ezekiel chapter 10,
00:46:33.020 | verse 3 to 4,
00:46:34.020 | describes what happens.
00:46:37.020 | "Now the cherubim
00:46:38.020 | "were standing
00:46:39.020 | "on the right side
00:46:40.020 | "of the temple
00:46:41.020 | "when the man entered
00:46:42.020 | "and the cloud filled
00:46:43.020 | "the inner court.
00:46:46.020 | "Then the glory of the Lord
00:46:47.020 | "went up from the cherub
00:46:48.020 | "to the threshold
00:46:49.020 | "of the temple
00:46:50.020 | "and the temple
00:46:51.020 | "was filled with a cloud
00:46:52.020 | "and the court was filled
00:46:53.020 | "with the brightness
00:46:54.020 | "of the glory of God."
00:46:55.020 | Now, if you notice here,
00:46:57.020 | He's in the inner court.
00:46:58.020 | The cloud comes,
00:46:59.020 | the glory is in the inner court,
00:47:01.020 | and then it begins
00:47:02.020 | to move toward the threshold.
00:47:04.020 | Basically, it's like
00:47:05.020 | being in the inner bedroom,
00:47:08.020 | and then the glory
00:47:09.020 | is now in the living room,
00:47:11.020 | and then in verse 18,
00:47:12.020 | it says,
00:47:13.020 | "Then the glory of the Lord
00:47:14.020 | "departed from the threshold
00:47:15.020 | "of the temple
00:47:16.020 | "and stood over the cherubim.
00:47:17.020 | "When the cherubim departed,
00:47:18.020 | "they lifted their wings
00:47:19.020 | "and rose up from the earth
00:47:20.020 | "in my sight
00:47:21.020 | "with the wheels beside them,
00:47:22.020 | "and they stood still
00:47:23.020 | "at the entrance
00:47:24.020 | "of the east gate
00:47:25.020 | "of the Lord's house,
00:47:26.020 | "and the glory of God
00:47:27.020 | "of Israel hovered over them."
00:47:31.020 | So the picture that we see
00:47:32.020 | in Ezekiel chapter 10
00:47:33.020 | is where the glory of God
00:47:35.020 | reluctantly is moving out
00:47:37.020 | of the temple and of Israel.
00:47:40.020 | It's in the inner court
00:47:41.020 | to the threshold,
00:47:42.020 | from the threshold to the gate,
00:47:44.020 | and then as the glory departs,
00:47:46.020 | it begins to hover.
00:47:48.020 | And Dr. Harris,
00:47:49.020 | when he was here speaking
00:47:50.020 | many years ago,
00:47:51.020 | described this as a scene
00:47:53.020 | where someone is reluctant
00:47:54.020 | to say goodbye,
00:47:57.020 | and they're saying goodbye
00:47:58.020 | in the kitchen,
00:47:59.020 | and as they are leaving,
00:48:00.020 | they're turning around
00:48:01.020 | and saying goodbye,
00:48:03.020 | and then they stop at the door,
00:48:06.020 | reluctant to leave,
00:48:07.020 | but they know they have to go,
00:48:08.020 | and then as they are leaving,
00:48:09.020 | they're hovering,
00:48:10.020 | they're taking their time.
00:48:13.020 | And that's the picture
00:48:14.020 | that we see in Ezekiel chapter 10,
00:48:16.020 | where because of their sin,
00:48:18.020 | God's presence is withdrawn.
00:48:21.020 | That's exactly what it says
00:48:24.020 | in the book of Revelation
00:48:25.020 | of the seven churches.
00:48:27.020 | He said all the sins
00:48:28.020 | that he indicted them,
00:48:29.020 | he said if you do not repent,
00:48:31.020 | I will take away your lampstand.
00:48:34.020 | That's another way of saying
00:48:35.020 | that his glory will be withdrawn.
00:48:39.020 | This happened.
00:48:40.020 | Glory of God was withdrawn
00:48:42.020 | from the nation of Israel
00:48:44.020 | 600 years before this event.
00:48:49.020 | 600.
00:48:50.020 | 600 years.
00:48:52.020 | Israel went to the temple
00:48:54.020 | and sacrificed.
00:48:55.020 | 600 years.
00:48:57.020 | They prayed to God.
00:48:58.020 | 600 years they burned incense.
00:49:00.020 | 600 years they sang songs
00:49:02.020 | to this God.
00:49:03.020 | And for 600 years,
00:49:05.020 | God did not listen.
00:49:08.020 | For 600 years,
00:49:10.020 | they were playing a religious game,
00:49:12.020 | but the glory of God
00:49:14.020 | was no longer there.
00:49:16.020 | And that's why he says,
00:49:17.020 | in the book of Isaiah,
00:49:19.020 | that your assembly
00:49:20.020 | is an evil assembly.
00:49:22.020 | Your singing is noise to me.
00:49:25.020 | Stop assembling in your evil assembly
00:49:27.020 | because the glory of God
00:49:28.020 | has been withdrawn
00:49:31.020 | for 600 years.
00:49:33.020 | The presence of God
00:49:34.020 | was no longer there.
00:49:37.020 | And Israel didn't even know.
00:49:42.020 | He stopped sending his prophets
00:49:44.020 | 400 years of dead silence.
00:49:49.020 | No one spoke for God.
00:49:50.020 | The presence of God
00:49:51.020 | was completely withdrawn.
00:49:54.020 | And the first time
00:49:55.020 | they see the glory come back
00:49:57.020 | is when Jesus is baptized.
00:50:01.020 | This is my son,
00:50:03.020 | in whom I am well pleased.
00:50:06.020 | And then at the transfiguration,
00:50:09.020 | where he is preparing
00:50:11.020 | for his glory to return.
00:50:14.020 | But the way that glory
00:50:15.020 | is going to return,
00:50:16.020 | there needs to be
00:50:18.020 | something done about their sin.
00:50:21.020 | And the only way
00:50:22.020 | that the glory of God can return
00:50:24.020 | is by what he was going to do
00:50:25.020 | at the cross.
00:50:28.020 | He was going to cover
00:50:29.020 | the sins of sinners.
00:50:33.020 | And by doing so,
00:50:35.020 | he was going to come.
00:50:39.020 | That's the transfiguration.
00:50:41.020 | Transfiguration was a glimpse
00:50:43.020 | of him returning to his people.
00:50:48.020 | 600 years of silence.
00:50:51.020 | Now,
00:50:54.020 | 2 Peter 1, 16-19,
00:50:56.020 | Peter describes this scene
00:50:57.020 | in his own words.
00:50:59.020 | "For we did not follow
00:51:00.020 | cleverly devised tales
00:51:01.020 | when we made known to you
00:51:02.020 | the power and coming
00:51:03.020 | of our Lord Jesus Christ,
00:51:04.020 | but we were eyewitnesses
00:51:05.020 | of his majesty."
00:51:06.020 | He's talking about this.
00:51:08.020 | "For when he received
00:51:09.020 | honor and glory from God the Father,
00:51:11.020 | such an utterance as this
00:51:13.020 | was made to him
00:51:14.020 | by the majestic glory,
00:51:15.020 | 'This is my beloved son,
00:51:17.020 | with whom I am well pleased.'
00:51:20.020 | And we ourselves
00:51:21.020 | heard this utterance
00:51:22.020 | made from heaven
00:51:23.020 | when we were with him
00:51:24.020 | on the holy mountain.
00:51:25.020 | So we, a prophetic word,
00:51:27.020 | made more sure
00:51:28.020 | to which you do well
00:51:29.020 | to pay attention
00:51:30.020 | as to a lamp shining
00:51:31.020 | in a dark place
00:51:32.020 | until the day dawns
00:51:33.020 | and the morning star
00:51:34.020 | arises in your hearts."
00:51:37.020 | He says the things
00:51:39.020 | that we testify,
00:51:40.020 | the things that Moses and Elijah,
00:51:42.020 | the Old Testament testify,
00:51:43.020 | was made more sure how?
00:51:46.020 | By God.
00:51:49.020 | The Father himself spoke to them.
00:51:53.020 | "This is my son,
00:51:55.020 | in whom I am well pleased.
00:51:57.020 | Listen to him."
00:52:00.020 | Now why these three disciples?
00:52:04.020 | I mean, if you look carefully
00:52:06.020 | of them three,
00:52:08.020 | and especially the leader
00:52:09.020 | among them, Peter,
00:52:11.020 | they sometimes act
00:52:12.020 | like three stooges.
00:52:14.020 | There's a reason why
00:52:15.020 | Luke goes out of his way
00:52:16.020 | and he says,
00:52:17.020 | "So sleep overcame them."
00:52:19.020 | And that's the typical scene
00:52:20.020 | that we see with these three.
00:52:22.020 | At the Garden of Gethsemane,
00:52:23.020 | Jesus knows,
00:52:24.020 | he told them
00:52:25.020 | he's going to suffer and die,
00:52:26.020 | and they just couldn't
00:52:27.020 | stay awake.
00:52:29.020 | And he says,
00:52:30.020 | "Your spirit is willing,
00:52:33.020 | but your flesh is weak."
00:52:34.020 | So you have to pray.
00:52:37.020 | Your will,
00:52:38.020 | your willpower,
00:52:39.020 | your training,
00:52:40.020 | your know-how,
00:52:41.020 | you're not going to be able
00:52:42.020 | to do it.
00:52:43.020 | You have to pray.
00:52:46.020 | In fact, in verse 33,
00:52:47.020 | it says,
00:52:48.020 | "When Moses and Elijah
00:52:49.020 | is about to depart,
00:52:50.020 | Master, it is good for us
00:52:51.020 | to be here.
00:52:52.020 | Let us make three tabernacles,
00:52:53.020 | one for you,
00:52:54.020 | one for Moses,
00:52:55.020 | and one for Elijah."
00:52:56.020 | Not realizing what he was saying.
00:52:59.020 | They had no idea.
00:53:00.020 | They're about to leave.
00:53:01.020 | He's like,
00:53:02.020 | "Can you get them to come back?
00:53:04.020 | Let's go camping."
00:53:06.020 | And it says,
00:53:07.020 | they had no idea
00:53:08.020 | what they were talking about.
00:53:09.020 | It was gibberish.
00:53:11.020 | My professor used to say,
00:53:13.020 | you know,
00:53:14.020 | after he would create our papers,
00:53:15.020 | he said,
00:53:16.020 | "There's a lot of sunshine
00:53:17.020 | in this paper."
00:53:18.020 | Basically,
00:53:19.020 | it had to be,
00:53:20.020 | let's say,
00:53:21.020 | ten pages,
00:53:22.020 | and five pages
00:53:23.020 | were just sunshine.
00:53:24.020 | In other words,
00:53:25.020 | there's no content.
00:53:26.020 | You just fill the ten pages.
00:53:27.020 | Right?
00:53:28.020 | He said,
00:53:29.020 | they were talking,
00:53:30.020 | but they had no idea
00:53:31.020 | what they were talking about
00:53:32.020 | because they didn't understand
00:53:33.020 | about Jesus' death
00:53:34.020 | and resurrection.
00:53:35.020 | In fact,
00:53:36.020 | when Jesus mentioned this
00:53:37.020 | over and over,
00:53:38.020 | all they were thinking about
00:53:39.020 | was glory.
00:53:40.020 | I want to experience
00:53:43.020 | what they experienced
00:53:44.020 | and what they didn't know.
00:53:45.020 | And that's the reason
00:53:46.020 | why he told them
00:53:47.020 | to be quiet.
00:53:49.020 | Can you imagine?
00:53:51.020 | After seeing this sight,
00:53:52.020 | after hearing the voice of God,
00:53:54.020 | and at the end of it,
00:53:55.020 | God says,
00:53:56.020 | "Don't tell anybody yet."
00:53:57.020 | Right?
00:53:58.020 | Now,
00:53:59.020 | I don't know how good
00:54:00.020 | of a secret keeper
00:54:01.020 | these guys were.
00:54:02.020 | Right?
00:54:03.020 | Some people
00:54:04.020 | have a hard time
00:54:05.020 | keeping even little secrets,
00:54:06.020 | but can you imagine
00:54:07.020 | hearing the voice of God
00:54:08.020 | audibly,
00:54:09.020 | seeing His glory,
00:54:10.020 | seeing Jesus glorified
00:54:11.020 | as the King,
00:54:12.020 | seeing Elijah and Moses,
00:54:14.020 | and at the end of that,
00:54:15.020 | He says,
00:54:16.020 | "Don't tell people yet."
00:54:17.020 | Right?
00:54:18.020 | Here it says,
00:54:19.020 | in the book of Luke,
00:54:20.020 | it just says they kept silent,
00:54:21.020 | but in Matthew,
00:54:22.020 | Jesus actually tells them,
00:54:23.020 | "Don't tell anybody."
00:54:24.020 | And we know clearly why.
00:54:26.020 | Because the first time
00:54:27.020 | that they had an opportunity
00:54:28.020 | to testify about Jesus,
00:54:29.020 | they failed miserably
00:54:30.020 | because they didn't understand
00:54:31.020 | the cross.
00:54:33.020 | It wasn't until He died
00:54:34.020 | and was resurrected
00:54:36.020 | and Jesus opens their eyes,
00:54:38.020 | they begin to understand
00:54:40.020 | that's what He meant.
00:54:45.020 | Why were these weak men chosen?
00:54:48.020 | Feeble men.
00:54:50.020 | Why does He even use us?
00:54:54.020 | I mean,
00:54:56.020 | our churches are filled
00:54:57.020 | with people who
00:54:59.020 | don't read the Bible,
00:55:03.020 | never even pray.
00:55:06.020 | Maybe this room
00:55:07.020 | is filled with people
00:55:08.020 | who've never even one time
00:55:09.020 | spoken the gospel
00:55:10.020 | with somebody.
00:55:12.020 | And yet He says,
00:55:13.020 | "I will build my church
00:55:14.020 | and gates of Hades
00:55:15.020 | will not prevail against it."
00:55:17.020 | He wasn't relying
00:55:19.020 | on their gifting and talent.
00:55:20.020 | There wasn't something
00:55:21.020 | special about them.
00:55:22.020 | He says,
00:55:23.020 | before He went,
00:55:24.020 | He said,
00:55:25.020 | "Wait,
00:55:26.020 | because I already know you.
00:55:27.020 | Your credit score is low."
00:55:28.020 | Right?
00:55:29.020 | "You have 515 credit score.
00:55:30.020 | I can't give you a loan."
00:55:32.020 | He said,
00:55:33.020 | "But the Holy Spirit
00:55:34.020 | is going to come upon you.
00:55:35.020 | The power is not within you."
00:55:37.020 | When He comes,
00:55:39.020 | then you will receive power.
00:55:41.020 | You will be my witnesses.
00:55:45.020 | But see,
00:55:46.020 | the call of these disciples
00:55:47.020 | was not their own testimony.
00:55:50.020 | If a man stands before you
00:55:51.020 | and say,
00:55:52.020 | "I know you don't understand,
00:55:53.020 | but trust me."
00:55:55.020 | You run from that man.
00:55:58.020 | Because the testimony
00:55:59.020 | of whether it's a pastor,
00:56:00.020 | or an elder,
00:56:01.020 | or anybody in the church,
00:56:02.020 | or outside the church,
00:56:05.020 | their testimony isn't reliable.
00:56:09.020 | So the goal of the testimony
00:56:12.020 | is to bring us
00:56:13.020 | to the Word of God.
00:56:16.020 | So if we don't bring you
00:56:17.020 | to the Word of God,
00:56:18.020 | and all I'm telling you
00:56:19.020 | is to trust me,
00:56:20.020 | the moment that I
00:56:21.020 | disappoint you,
00:56:22.020 | your whole faith crumbles.
00:56:25.020 | Because your faith
00:56:26.020 | was dependent upon
00:56:28.020 | another man,
00:56:30.020 | who's no different than you.
00:56:33.020 | So the calling of the three
00:56:34.020 | is to bring them
00:56:35.020 | to the Word of God.
00:56:38.020 | Now here's where
00:56:40.020 | you and I need to be careful,
00:56:41.020 | because you go to a church
00:56:43.020 | where the Word of God
00:56:44.020 | is emphasized.
00:56:45.020 | We do inductive Bible study
00:56:46.020 | where the Word of God is taught.
00:56:48.020 | But if you stop here,
00:56:51.020 | you are also in danger.
00:56:56.020 | There are some people
00:56:57.020 | who are in love
00:56:58.020 | with the idea
00:56:59.020 | of being in love
00:57:00.020 | with the Bible.
00:57:03.020 | In John 5, 39, it says,
00:57:04.020 | "You search the Scriptures
00:57:05.020 | because you think
00:57:06.020 | that in them
00:57:07.020 | you have eternal life.
00:57:08.020 | It is these
00:57:09.020 | that testify about me."
00:57:14.020 | Do not become connoisseurs
00:57:16.020 | of good sermons.
00:57:18.020 | Because the point of Scripture,
00:57:20.020 | the reason why
00:57:21.020 | they had to bring people
00:57:22.020 | to the Word of God,
00:57:23.020 | it says, "Preach the Word
00:57:24.020 | in season and out of season.
00:57:25.020 | Don't turn from it
00:57:26.020 | to the left or to the right.
00:57:27.020 | Don't add to it.
00:57:28.020 | Don't subtract to it."
00:57:30.020 | Every iota,
00:57:32.020 | jot and tittle,
00:57:33.020 | will be fulfilled.
00:57:36.020 | Will be fulfilled, he says.
00:57:39.020 | But the purpose
00:57:40.020 | of the Word of God
00:57:42.020 | is to bring us to Christ.
00:57:46.020 | Because you and I
00:57:47.020 | are in a Bible community.
00:57:51.020 | You know, when I first
00:57:52.020 | became a Christian,
00:57:53.020 | because I saw
00:57:54.020 | the superficialness
00:57:55.020 | of the Church,
00:57:56.020 | I said, "You know what?
00:57:57.020 | It doesn't look anything
00:57:58.020 | like what I see
00:57:59.020 | in the Scripture."
00:58:00.020 | And I realized
00:58:01.020 | that's great.
00:58:02.020 | Just like that tag,
00:58:04.020 | you know, started out great,
00:58:06.020 | but by the time
00:58:07.020 | we got 2,000 years later,
00:58:08.020 | it doesn't look anything
00:58:09.020 | like the beginning.
00:58:11.020 | So I realized
00:58:12.020 | we have to go back
00:58:13.020 | to the beginning.
00:58:14.020 | What did the first guy say?
00:58:15.020 | Which was the Word of God.
00:58:17.020 | And that's where we have to go.
00:58:18.020 | We have to go to the original.
00:58:20.020 | So we are constantly reforming
00:58:22.020 | what went wrong
00:58:23.020 | in the last 2,000 years,
00:58:25.020 | according to the Word of God.
00:58:27.020 | But here's the danger.
00:58:30.020 | So many people
00:58:31.020 | in the Bible community
00:58:32.020 | get to the Bible,
00:58:33.020 | and they never get to Christ.
00:58:35.020 | They're in love
00:58:36.020 | with the idea
00:58:37.020 | of being in love with Christ.
00:58:39.020 | It's like, you know,
00:58:40.020 | out of all the weddings
00:58:42.020 | that I've performed,
00:58:43.020 | every once in a while,
00:58:44.020 | I run into somebody
00:58:45.020 | who is committed
00:58:46.020 | to getting married,
00:58:48.020 | but they don't seem to love
00:58:49.020 | their future bride
00:58:50.020 | or their husband.
00:58:53.020 | But they're in love
00:58:54.020 | with the idea of the wedding.
00:58:57.020 | They're in love
00:58:58.020 | with the idea of the marriage.
00:59:01.020 | It just happens like
00:59:02.020 | you need a husband to do that.
00:59:05.020 | You need a wife to do that.
00:59:07.020 | And so when you make marriage
00:59:09.020 | your idol,
00:59:10.020 | you're willing to get whoever
00:59:12.020 | is going to fulfill
00:59:15.020 | that purpose.
00:59:17.020 | And a lot of people
00:59:19.020 | with good intentions
00:59:22.020 | end up forfeiting
00:59:23.020 | and compromising their life
00:59:24.020 | as a result.
00:59:27.020 | If our pursuit of Christ
00:59:29.020 | and truth
00:59:30.020 | causes us to end
00:59:31.020 | in the Word of God,
00:59:33.020 | you've missed the whole point.
00:59:36.020 | The reason why
00:59:37.020 | these men had to bring people
00:59:38.020 | to the Word
00:59:39.020 | is because the Word
00:59:40.020 | brings us to God.
00:59:42.020 | It brings us to Christ.
00:59:45.020 | There's so many people
00:59:46.020 | who are in love
00:59:47.020 | with the exposition
00:59:48.020 | of the Word,
00:59:51.020 | but they don't love Christ.
00:59:54.020 | You know why I know that?
00:59:56.020 | You know how you know that?
00:59:59.020 | Because all they talk about
01:00:00.020 | is the Bible.
01:00:03.020 | The Bible.
01:00:05.020 | Which means it's a road,
01:00:08.020 | but they never get
01:00:09.020 | to the destination.
01:00:11.020 | The destination is Christ.
01:00:14.020 | There's no affection for Christ.
01:00:15.020 | There's no loyalty to Christ.
01:00:16.020 | There's no love of Christ.
01:00:17.020 | There's no obedience to Christ.
01:00:18.020 | They love the idea
01:00:20.020 | of being biblical.
01:00:24.020 | You know why the difference
01:00:25.020 | is between being
01:00:28.020 | in love with Christ
01:00:29.020 | and being in love
01:00:30.020 | with the Word of God?
01:00:33.020 | If you're in love
01:00:34.020 | with the Word of God,
01:00:35.020 | all you do is to spread
01:00:36.020 | that other people
01:00:38.020 | love the Word.
01:00:41.020 | But it's not Christ.
01:00:45.020 | It is not Christ.
01:00:46.020 | The greatest commandment
01:00:47.020 | is love the Lord your God
01:00:48.020 | with all your heart, soul,
01:00:49.020 | mind, and strength.
01:00:50.020 | Not love the Word of God
01:00:51.020 | with all your mind, strength.
01:00:53.020 | It's an avenue
01:00:55.020 | to get to Christ.
01:00:58.020 | If you end there,
01:01:02.020 | you're no different
01:01:03.020 | than the Pharisees.
01:01:05.020 | The Pharisees,
01:01:06.020 | who are so committed
01:01:07.020 | to dissecting every part
01:01:09.020 | of the Word,
01:01:11.020 | and then when Christ came,
01:01:14.020 | he said, "I never knew you."
01:01:18.020 | Because if the Word of God
01:01:19.020 | leads you to Christ,
01:01:20.020 | automatically you are humbled.
01:01:25.020 | Why does the Word of God
01:01:26.020 | make you arrogant?
01:01:29.020 | Why does the Word of God
01:01:30.020 | make you judgmental?
01:01:33.020 | Why does the Word of God
01:01:34.020 | make you proud?
01:01:36.020 | Because it hasn't
01:01:37.020 | led you to Christ.
01:01:40.020 | When you see
01:01:41.020 | the glory of Christ,
01:01:42.020 | when you see
01:01:43.020 | the humility of Christ,
01:01:44.020 | when you see
01:01:45.020 | the love of Christ,
01:01:46.020 | you change.
01:01:49.020 | And you become a witness.
01:01:53.020 | Now, some of you
01:01:55.020 | are Dodgers fans, right?
01:01:59.020 | And you know what day it is.
01:02:02.020 | Today is the seventh game.
01:02:05.020 | If they win,
01:02:06.020 | they get to go to
01:02:07.020 | the World Series.
01:02:08.020 | If they lose,
01:02:10.020 | they go home,
01:02:11.020 | like everybody else, right?
01:02:15.020 | And you know
01:02:16.020 | who the Dodgers fans are.
01:02:17.020 | They're in the Dodgers chat room.
01:02:19.020 | Some of them may have been
01:02:20.020 | wearing Dodger uniform
01:02:22.020 | or their hat.
01:02:24.020 | Whatever plan you had tonight
01:02:25.020 | was canceled
01:02:27.020 | because you got to go watch it.
01:02:28.020 | I think it's at 5 o'clock today, right?
01:02:32.020 | But you know who the Dodgers fans are
01:02:33.020 | because you didn't ask them.
01:02:34.020 | They weren't trained
01:02:35.020 | to be Dodgers fans.
01:02:36.020 | You just know
01:02:37.020 | because they love the Dodgers.
01:02:39.020 | That's their team.
01:02:41.020 | And if you watch the Dodgers fans,
01:02:42.020 | they want everybody to know.
01:02:43.020 | It's on their Instagram.
01:02:45.020 | If they win,
01:02:46.020 | if Shohei Ohtani makes a home run,
01:02:48.020 | whether you like it or not,
01:02:49.020 | you're going to know about it.
01:02:51.020 | And they love to fellowship
01:02:53.020 | with other Dodger fans.
01:02:56.020 | I guarantee you
01:02:57.020 | as soon as this is over,
01:02:58.020 | there's going to be pockets of people
01:02:59.020 | that's going to be talking
01:03:00.020 | about today's game
01:03:02.020 | and who and where
01:03:03.020 | they're going to be watching this
01:03:04.020 | and they're going to be sharing
01:03:05.020 | and they're going to be in the chat room
01:03:06.020 | talking all this stuff.
01:03:08.020 | And then they go beyond that.
01:03:11.020 | The real Dodgers fans
01:03:13.020 | can't wait for you
01:03:14.020 | to become a Dodgers fan.
01:03:16.020 | They are going to be evangelizing today
01:03:20.020 | because it makes them happy
01:03:21.020 | for you to love what they love.
01:03:23.020 | Right?
01:03:26.020 | When you force worship,
01:03:32.020 | I mean,
01:03:34.020 | you say, "Come on.
01:03:36.020 | "Let's go watch Dodgers fan.
01:03:38.020 | "Let's just go watch Dodgers."
01:03:39.020 | But you're forcing.
01:03:40.020 | You're going through the motion.
01:03:41.020 | You put on the blue.
01:03:42.020 | You wear the hat.
01:03:43.020 | You have no interest.
01:03:44.020 | It's miserable.
01:03:45.020 | You're just playing the games
01:03:47.020 | because you're around people who love it.
01:03:49.020 | And then you say, "Fellowship."
01:03:50.020 | They're all talking,
01:03:51.020 | "Oh, Dodgers this, Dodgers that."
01:03:52.020 | And you try to play the game,
01:03:53.020 | but it's not there.
01:03:56.020 | And for sure,
01:03:57.020 | you're not going to tell other people.
01:03:58.020 | You're not going to proselytize.
01:04:02.020 | But if your faith leads you to the Word
01:04:05.020 | and the Word leads you to Christ,
