okay, if you can turn your Bibles with me to Luke chapter 12, 00:18:45.880 |
we'll be reading from verses 1, 1 to 3, the section involves all 12 verses, 00:19:06.880 |
all the way to verse 12, but it's going to be cut into three parts, okay, 00:19:10.880 |
but we're going to be dealing with the first part of it today, okay, 00:19:17.880 |
under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together, 00:19:21.880 |
that they were stepping on one another, he began saying to his disciples, 00:19:25.880 |
first of all, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy, 00:19:30.880 |
but there's nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known, 00:19:34.880 |
accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, 00:19:38.880 |
and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops. 00:19:49.880 |
We pray that the power of your word and your Holy Spirit would speak to us, challenge us, 00:19:56.880 |
revive us, direct us, Lord God, to the path that you sent your son Jesus to walk, 00:20:04.880 |
that we may deny ourselves and pick up our own crosses and follow him. 00:20:08.880 |
May your name be magnified and your church shine bright, Lord God, in this dark world. 00:20:16.880 |
As you guys know, this is, I think I've been off this pulpit for about five weeks, 00:20:24.880 |
so it feels like, you know, time goes by so fast and slow whenever I'm away from church. 00:20:34.880 |
Obviously, we just had a retreat last weekend, and so we were tremendously blessed by that. 00:20:49.880 |
You know, it is physically taxing, obviously, because moving around so much and being in different places. 00:20:57.880 |
And, you know, my sleeping habit's not that great. 00:21:00.880 |
But part of the reason why I enjoy going out to missions is because it kind of recalibrates my thinking sometimes. 00:21:07.880 |
You know, because our church has been around for 28-plus years, 00:21:12.880 |
we can no longer be considered a church plan, obviously. 00:21:17.880 |
Those years have been gone many, many years ago. 00:21:20.880 |
And so there's a natural tendency when a church has been around for a while, 00:21:24.880 |
and maybe some of you have been a Christian for a while, 00:21:31.880 |
That our call to be a light to the world, as Pastor Ray challenged us in his last sermon at the retreat, 00:21:41.880 |
It's something that we know that we ought to do, but it's not the heartbeat of the church. 00:21:45.880 |
But the reason why us being a light is so important is you cannot understand Scripture outside of God pursuing the lost. 00:21:59.880 |
The reason why we have Scripture is because it is a history of God's redeeming, 00:22:07.880 |
God's plan of redeeming sinners for himself, for his glory. 00:22:11.880 |
So any part of the Scripture that you are reading, 00:22:15.880 |
and not understanding that that's the reason why he wrote it, 00:22:30.880 |
You collect a lot of information about what the Bible is, and what God did, and what does the Gospel say, 00:22:41.880 |
Or you may understand why, but you don't really understand the heartbeat of God. 00:22:47.880 |
And so what ends up happening is you gain a lot of knowledge, and when that knowledge is not being practiced, 00:22:54.880 |
it just becomes a lot of resources for pride. 00:23:06.880 |
You cannot understand the cross until you understand why. 00:23:17.880 |
Why did he sacrifice so much for people who are not deserving? 00:23:21.880 |
You know, that's a mystery that we will probably carry into eternity. 00:23:31.880 |
That's why we study the Bible, so that you may be equipped. 00:23:36.880 |
Just so that you can be a better father, so that you can have a nicer church, 00:23:40.880 |
where people are caring for each other, so that we can counsel each other, 00:23:44.880 |
so that we can have a better, easier, comfortable, more loved life. 00:23:48.880 |
No, the equipping is for the purpose of training us to go out. 00:23:54.880 |
So if we are not actively participating in being the light for the world, 00:24:02.880 |
And everything you evaluate, you evaluate based upon how does it affect me? 00:24:10.880 |
Instead of seeing the scripture as how am I being equipped to reach the lost? 00:24:19.880 |
I say all of this because the text that we're looking at starts out by saying under these circumstances. 00:24:26.880 |
So you need to know what under these circumstances. 00:24:29.880 |
Why is the next 12 verses and the next two chapters, why does he say what he says? 00:24:35.880 |
Is it, we already know if you read it, it's about hypocrisy. 00:24:41.880 |
What is the circumstance that he is referring to? 00:24:48.880 |
It tells us now when he had spoken, a Pharisee asked him to have lunch with him. 00:24:56.880 |
He was surprised that he had not first ceremony washed before the meal. 00:25:00.880 |
So they were accusing Jesus, oh, how can this be a man of God? 00:25:05.880 |
How can this be a man who is close to God if he's not practicing our laws? 00:25:16.880 |
But in that context, Jesus rebukes them about their hypocrisy. 00:25:21.880 |
And then the lawyers hear that and said, Lord, if you say that, you rebuke us too. 00:25:33.880 |
And then after he rebukes them, they don't like what he has to say. 00:25:37.880 |
In verse 53, when he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very high. 00:25:42.880 |
To be very hostile and to question him closely on many subjects. 00:25:46.880 |
Plotting against him to catch him in something he might say. 00:25:51.880 |
So when he says under these circumstances, he's talking about he's very aware that the hostility toward Christ is growing from the leaders. 00:26:05.880 |
We already shared in the previous studies that Jesus has turned his attention from the crowd mainly to the disciples. 00:26:16.880 |
In about six months, he's going to be physically gone. 00:26:19.880 |
And he needs them to be ready to take the baton and continue to do the work that he has come to do. 00:26:26.880 |
So now he, if you look at it, he says under these circumstances, so many thousands of people, even though a large crowd was coming to them, what does he say? 00:26:36.880 |
He turns around to his disciples and he says, beware of the leaven. 00:26:41.880 |
So it's important that we understand the circumstance. 00:26:44.880 |
And two, it's important that he is now preparing his disciples. 00:26:48.880 |
He was addressing his disciples because in Luke chapter 12, verse 11, at the end of this interaction, he's going to tell them when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense or what you are to say. 00:27:15.880 |
In other words, they're going to drag you into court. 00:27:20.880 |
They're going to be the ones who's going to be whipping you. 00:27:26.880 |
These leaders who are on the surface look like religious leaders. 00:27:34.880 |
They're the ones that you're going to for counsel. 00:27:37.880 |
And Jesus is telling them, watch out for these people. 00:27:40.880 |
They're the ones who are going to drag you into court. 00:27:44.880 |
They're the ones who are going to crucify me. 00:27:46.880 |
And then they're the ones who are going to want to crucify you. 00:27:49.880 |
So the whole text here in verse 1 through 12 is to prepare the disciples for the persecution and the hardship and eventually the death that they will face through these people. 00:28:01.880 |
So I say all of this because we have to understand all that he's saying because he's preparing them to go out. 00:28:24.880 |
He's not just saying, hey, don't be a hypocrite. 00:28:28.880 |
He's exposing the hypocrisy because it's through the hands of the hypocrites that the greatest persecution is going to come. 00:28:36.880 |
These Pharisees had the power over the synagogue. 00:28:43.880 |
If you didn't obey them, they didn't like you, they would kick you out, which meant that they had power over their spiritual well-being because they wouldn't be able to go into worship. 00:28:54.880 |
They had power over their social being because once they got cut off, they couldn't do any business. 00:29:01.880 |
Once they got cut off, they couldn't survive financially. 00:29:05.880 |
So the power that these people had over the Jews of this time could not be exaggerated. 00:29:11.880 |
And he said, these very people that you relied on, these leaders that you went to to seek after God, they're the ones who are going to turn against you. 00:29:19.880 |
And they're the ones who's going to end up crucifying me. 00:29:23.880 |
So there's three things that he says in verses one through twelve. 00:29:29.880 |
That's a text that we're going to be looking at this morning. 00:29:31.880 |
And then in verse four to eight, it says, do not fear. 00:29:39.880 |
And he says, when he says, do not fear, he's not saying just do not fear them. 00:29:48.880 |
If you're going to fear anybody, fear the one who can kill you and then judge you afterwards. 00:29:56.880 |
And then the main point that he's trying to get to is in verse nine through twelve. 00:30:02.880 |
He's warning them because he's going to challenge them in verse nine through twelve. 00:30:07.880 |
After I leave, you're going to have to take the baton. 00:30:12.880 |
And don't be afraid of confessing me before men. 00:30:15.880 |
They could have avoided all of this if they didn't obey verse nine through twelve. 00:30:23.880 |
If they made the purpose of their life to have the easiest life that they can. 00:30:30.880 |
Make sure that our children have everything that we didn't have when we were younger. 00:30:33.880 |
If your whole purpose of life is to have a better, easier life. 00:30:40.880 |
Then you don't have to worry about verse one to verse eight. 00:30:56.880 |
I mean, what do you have to worry about fearing death? 00:31:00.880 |
Because you're already living your life avoiding any kind of discomfort. 00:31:11.880 |
So if you don't obey verse nine through twelve. 00:31:26.880 |
But these are practical information of equipping. 00:31:32.880 |
Because they needed to understand in order to obey verse nine through twelve. 00:31:39.880 |
The opposition is going to come through these hypocrites. 00:31:51.880 |
I'm going to look at three things that he exposes here. 00:31:57.880 |
First of all, the spiritual leaders would be the first to oppose their gospel work. 00:32:04.880 |
He began saying to his disciples, first of all, be aware. 00:32:09.880 |
Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 00:32:12.880 |
In other words, be alert or consider carefully. 00:32:17.880 |
Because superficially, they're going to look godly. 00:32:20.880 |
Superficially, they're going to seem like they're representing God. 00:32:25.880 |
Now, you have to understand how shocking this is. 00:32:34.880 |
They're the ones who supposedly represented God. 00:32:39.880 |
And as Jesus is heading to the cross, he said, "Beware of these guys." 00:32:48.880 |
Don't be won over by their superficial religiosity. 00:32:57.880 |
Leaven in the Bible is almost always referring to sin. 00:33:03.880 |
And the reason why he's referring to sin is because it's small. 00:33:21.880 |
Leaven is such a small piece that you put into a dough, 00:33:33.880 |
That's how the Bible uses the imagery of sin. 00:33:45.880 |
You know, we're going to be studying the book of Genesis. 00:33:49.880 |
And it's almost shocking to see that this simple sin mentioned in chapter 3 of Genesis. 00:34:04.880 |
That was the leaven that came into mankind and ruined all of mankind. 00:34:11.880 |
So the scripture uses that to describe the deadly effect of sin. 00:34:29.880 |
And in the Passover meal, if you've attended it, 00:34:32.880 |
you know that there's a part of the meal before the meal happens 00:34:37.880 |
that they're supposed to go out and find everything. 00:34:40.880 |
Like you're not allowed to have any kind of leaven in the house because it represents sin. 00:34:45.880 |
So that before they can have this ceremony before God, 00:34:48.880 |
again, symbolically, they had to do away with sin. 00:34:52.880 |
And they had to do that every single year to teach them the deadly effects of sin, the necessity of the cross. 00:35:00.880 |
If you do not understand the deadliness of sin, even small sin, then cross is just an event. 00:35:07.880 |
It's just a beautiful scene of God loving his people. 00:35:13.880 |
But it's not something that we cling to, that we're desperate for. 00:35:19.880 |
He says, beware of the leaven, the sin of the Pharisees. 00:35:23.880 |
A literal leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 00:35:27.880 |
All throughout Scripture in the Old Testament, the leaders are the ones who are first rebuked. 00:35:34.880 |
Right before Israel is judged, a prophet usually goes. 00:35:39.880 |
And the first group of people that he ends up rebuking and exposing are the leaders. 00:35:43.880 |
And Isaiah 9:16 says, "For those who guide this people are leading them astray, 00:35:47.880 |
and those who are guided by them are brought to confusion." 00:36:02.880 |
And because of that, anyone who follows them will also be compromised. 00:36:06.880 |
I can't emphasize enough the importance of qualified leaders. 00:36:12.880 |
You know, as the church grows, there's a growing pressure. 00:36:19.880 |
We have so many needs and not enough leaders. 00:36:22.880 |
And so, because the need is great, we need to establish more leaders. 00:36:30.880 |
The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 00:36:32.880 |
But the temptation is, because the harvest is great, let's just send whoever. 00:36:44.880 |
Until you start to find out the leaven of the leaders and the hypocrisy 00:36:48.880 |
and that their righteousness was very superficial. 00:36:50.880 |
And then when they get squeezed, you see what they have. 00:36:56.880 |
And that's the history of the nation of Israel. 00:37:01.880 |
That as the pressure grows, we automatically think that if we just threw more people at it, that that's going to solve the problem. 00:37:12.880 |
The greatest mistake that the church would make is to establish wrong leaders, unqualified leaders, untested leaders. 00:37:19.880 |
Because you don't realize where they are until they are squeezed. 00:37:32.880 |
It trails behind them because they're hiding it. 00:37:36.880 |
It trails behind them because they haven't been tested. 00:37:39.880 |
It says beware of them because if you establish the wrong leaders, everyone under them will also fall. 00:37:47.880 |
In Matthew 23:13, "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people, for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in." 00:38:02.880 |
Now, any time I say this, I know how it sounds. 00:38:08.880 |
And I know what people say because I hear it. 00:38:15.880 |
If you're calling out leaders of other churches, or maybe even here, including myself, right? 00:38:32.880 |
Because the whole church will crumble if you establish wrong leaders. 00:38:38.880 |
And I believe the Christian state that we are in today, first and foremost, 00:38:44.880 |
and foremost is because we ordain people haphazardly. 00:38:50.880 |
The way somebody comes into ministry today is, "I want to do God's work." 00:38:58.880 |
I've never heard anybody get rejected by seminary. 00:39:02.880 |
I've never heard somebody say, "I want to go to seminary, but I just couldn't pass their entrance exam." 00:39:12.880 |
Then once you go, you're the spiritual leader. 00:39:21.880 |
We don't know what your life is, but especially in a large, growing church. 00:39:28.880 |
Anybody who's willing, if you're faithful at church, if you show up to events, they're loyal to the church, then let them lead. 00:39:37.880 |
And so, as the church gets bigger, the qualification of leader becomes weaker and weaker and weaker until there's some conflict. 00:39:52.880 |
Then all of a sudden, everything that seems to be going so well just absolutely crumbles. 00:39:57.880 |
That's why the scripture says, "Do not lay hands hastily." 00:40:01.880 |
If you lay hands hastily, you will participate in the sin of the one whom you have laid hands hastily. 00:40:11.880 |
Dr. Wilkins, one of my professors at Biola and Talbot, he was serving at a church in Seattle, and he left there to be a professor at Talbot, and then he wrote a book. 00:40:23.880 |
And in his book, he says, "One of the most important things, one of the most important things that a pastor can do is to guard the gate. 00:40:38.880 |
Because if you allow anyone and everyone to enter into leadership, you will reap what will come. 00:40:48.880 |
Maybe not that year, maybe not two years, but eventually you will reap. 00:40:53.880 |
So I know that even in our church, because I hear it all the time, right? 00:41:09.880 |
We feel the pressure more than anybody else in our church. 00:41:17.880 |
Our families feel the pressure more than anybody else at our church. 00:41:31.880 |
You don't just take a kid, you know, your child, your precious child. 00:41:37.880 |
And you're looking for the next, whoever is available. 00:41:39.880 |
And you just drop them off and hopefully you don't hurt them. 00:41:47.880 |
And if you don't have a babysitter that you can trust, 00:41:59.880 |
Because you cannot take the chance of somebody harming your child. 00:42:09.880 |
Are the souls that are in our church any less precious? 00:42:13.880 |
That we would just establish anyone and everyone who's not tested? 00:42:22.880 |
It's an appalling and horrible thing that has happened in the land. 00:42:25.880 |
The prophets prophesy falsely and the priests rule on their own authority. 00:42:41.880 |
The sin Jesus specifically is pointing to is what I just said. 00:42:51.880 |
Hypocrisy means to be hidden, to be concealed, to keep a secret. 00:42:56.880 |
The Pharisees, if you know, on the surface were very godly people. 00:43:11.880 |
I've only known maybe two or three people, or maybe a little bit more than that, in my life as a Christian, 00:43:20.880 |
that on paper prayed more than the Pharisees. 00:43:23.880 |
They prayed and fasted continually all the time. 00:43:26.880 |
So on the surface they prayed more than other people. 00:43:48.880 |
More than the majority of Christians that I've ever met. 00:43:51.880 |
And then on top of that, you know what else they did? 00:43:55.880 |
It said they traveled over mountains and traveled far to make disciples. 00:44:09.880 |
So on the surface, you can look at them and say, wow, they are very godly people. 00:44:21.880 |
Everything that they do, they do for others to see. 00:44:29.880 |
It's easy for us to get hung up on hypocrisy. 00:44:35.880 |
Because if we're doing it for other people to see, it's easy. 00:44:43.880 |
In fact, if you look at scripture, the first sin, the first sin that came into the church and would have compromised them was a sin of hypocrisy. 00:44:56.080 |
Remember in Acts chapter 5, Ananias and Sapphira? 00:44:58.880 |
When Barnabas and other wealthy people were selling their property and giving it to the church to be distributed to people who had need. 00:45:06.880 |
Ananias and Sapphira had a great idea that we're going to sell our property, but instead of giving all of it, they're just going to give a portion of it, but they're going to pretend like they gave everything. 00:45:15.480 |
But the problem with that is, one, that wasn't true. 00:45:23.360 |
But they wanted to seem godly, just like Barnabas, just like other people. 00:45:31.120 |
And as a result of that, he said, why did you lie to the Holy Spirit and both of them die because of this hypocrisy? 00:45:42.400 |
They sold their property, which majority of the people, majority of Christians that has ever lived since the time of Christ, 00:45:53.120 |
have they sold everything that they had and gave 10%, 20%, 30%? 00:46:01.300 |
They gave a big chunk of their property over to the church, and they died because of it. 00:46:07.700 |
So on the surface, you may look at that and say, wow, I mean, at least they gave. 00:46:16.700 |
Doesn't that tell us how dangerous hypocrisy is? 00:46:22.900 |
That God is not looking for people who's going to present themselves as godly because that was the sin of the Pharisees. 00:46:33.960 |
And Pharisees were the ones who were behind the killing of Jesus. 00:46:37.260 |
And so the very first sin that comes in that they needed to deal with and make an example to make sure 00:46:45.080 |
that do not allow this hypocrisy to come into the church. 00:46:49.820 |
Do not allow what the Israelites were guilty of before they went into captivity. 00:47:02.960 |
They're giving lip service to God, presenting themselves as godless, yes, having no power. 00:47:10.120 |
If you study church history, I think most church historians will agree 00:47:17.420 |
the biggest detriment to the church has always been hypocrisy. 00:47:27.020 |
In our generation, we have persecution all over. 00:47:33.460 |
But every time now I get an update from our Indian pastors, there's some sort of beating. 00:47:39.680 |
Last time we were there in January, they were trying to burn down the house that we built. 00:47:46.700 |
And all the floor, you could see the char on the ground. 00:47:49.400 |
I mean, you and I hear about it, and we get challenged by it, and we pray for them. 00:47:57.440 |
But the biggest hindrance to the church has never been outside. 00:48:03.580 |
It's the leaders who pretend, holding on to a form of godliness. 00:48:08.380 |
In fact, Apostle Peter and Barnabas in the book of Galatians, you know, 00:48:16.080 |
the Judaizers were coming in, and they had so much power, 00:48:21.860 |
they were beginning to influence even Apostle Peter, the leader among the apostles. 00:48:26.960 |
So when they gathered together, it says Peter would not join with the Gentiles to eat with them, 00:48:31.060 |
and he would only hang out with the Jews because he was concerned. 00:48:43.600 |
with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 00:48:48.020 |
Remember at the beginning of Galatians chapter 1, he said, 00:48:52.640 |
if anybody preaches a different gospel other than what I preach to you, 00:48:58.600 |
He was referring to the hypocrisy that even Peter, 00:49:08.220 |
and yet Peter was succumbing to the hypocrisy, 00:49:12.100 |
the pressure that was coming from the church. 00:49:16.500 |
So if you look at the early church, the way Satan was attacking, 00:49:22.500 |
was trying to ruin the church, was through hypocrisy, 00:49:26.920 |
was the pressure of how they would look to other people. 00:49:33.960 |
Matthew 23, verse 5, they do all their deeds to be noticed by men. 00:49:38.020 |
Of course, our natural instinct, ever since we were kids. 00:49:43.680 |
So much of what we do is out of peer pressure. 00:49:50.580 |
I mean, it's like, well, you know, I experienced that when I was a teenager in high school, but no more. 00:50:37.100 |
So much of what we do is under constant pressure. 00:50:46.680 |
And we often compromise so much that we don't even recognize when we're compromising. 00:50:58.460 |
The seven woes that he gives to the Pharisees and the scribes. 00:51:07.080 |
Woe to you Pharisees, you hypocrites, you hypocrites, you hypocrites. 00:51:17.100 |
But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed and hidden that will not be known. 00:51:37.320 |
And if you see them through circumstance and difficulty and trial, you will see what comes out. 00:51:45.540 |
Martin Lloyd-Jones says that there's three types of hypocrisy. 00:51:54.380 |
And I think this is helpful because he's like a surgeon kind of dissecting, right? 00:51:59.660 |
What does this look like in the lives of the people? 00:52:09.140 |
An intellectual hypocrite is somebody who is high on theology. 00:52:16.540 |
And they judge everybody else based upon how much you've read. 00:52:26.680 |
So their righteousness is how much they've studied. 00:52:35.520 |
But their worship before God is not passionate. 00:52:43.460 |
Thinking that if I know about love, if I know the gospel, if I know the theology, 00:52:47.640 |
and if I ascend to the right forms of theology, that's love. 00:52:56.000 |
If you examine them beyond what they say and what they read and what they know, 00:53:04.320 |
So every argument, every discussion is about what they know. 00:53:11.140 |
You're presenting the form, what you're good at, and what you're not good at, you tend to hide. 00:53:16.240 |
And then there's an emotional hypocrite, he says. 00:53:18.960 |
And emotional hypocrites, they tend to look down on the theologically astute people. 00:53:26.340 |
It's like, oh, you know, the Pharisees read the Bible. 00:53:35.000 |
When it comes to the scripture and theology, you think, ah, you know, it's not a way. 00:53:42.660 |
Isn't the greatest commandment to love God and love your neighbor? 00:53:50.180 |
And they don't pursue righteousness because righteousness is all excused as long as we love. 00:53:58.040 |
So it's all about how we feel, how we express ourselves, how we pray, how loud we sing. 00:54:02.280 |
Those are the, he says, are emotional hypocrites. 00:54:13.700 |
They're the ones who are volunteering for every need in the church. 00:54:16.420 |
But they're theologically weak because they're not looking at scripture. 00:54:20.420 |
And then when you look at their affection, their affections are all over the place. 00:54:25.360 |
And whenever they get squeezed, usually grumbling comes out. 00:54:31.400 |
Because they're doing so much, the other people are not doing what I'm doing. 00:54:39.560 |
Jeremiah 17, 9 through 10, where God brings the word. 00:54:45.100 |
The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick. 00:54:51.340 |
If you say, oh, it's about heart, it's about love. 00:55:03.880 |
Even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the result of his deeds. 00:55:11.480 |
So some people may say, oh, it's about the heart. 00:55:15.420 |
And some people say, no, it's about the mind. 00:55:17.200 |
And some people say, it's all about application. 00:55:19.980 |
But God says, I search the heart, the mind, and your deeds. 00:55:37.420 |
At no time is your will separate from what you know. 00:55:41.380 |
You can't say, I believe God, and then not practice it. 00:55:45.580 |
If we're going to say we're followers of Christ, you must believe, you must have affection, and you must obey. 00:55:58.740 |
I love you because everything makes sense in my mind. 00:56:13.040 |
And if somebody says who you are, he's like, yeah, this person is lovable. 00:56:23.820 |
I'm doing so much, but I feel nothing for you. 00:56:27.480 |
Waking up early in the morning, cooking breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sacrificial. 00:56:36.120 |
Love is something you do, not something you feel. 00:56:44.240 |
And people memorize that, thinking it's biblical. 00:57:05.120 |
Or he's like, I feel, I feel so much love for you. 00:57:14.080 |
You know, somebody asks me what I think of you. 00:57:16.560 |
It's like, yeah, I don't know if this is the person that I want. 00:57:27.000 |
At no time can a human being ever separate any of these three. 00:57:35.100 |
So, Martin Lloyd-Jones says, a hypocrite chooses one. 00:57:43.960 |
And then the things that he hides behind him. 00:57:53.020 |
Every single one of us has a leaning toward one of these things. 00:58:02.320 |
But a hypocrite is somebody who chooses that one. 00:58:10.340 |
And that whenever somebody points out, but you don't practice, or you don't study, or you don't do this. 00:58:19.960 |
He said, this is what the Pharisees were doing. 00:58:23.800 |
They're presenting their outward righteousness. 00:58:52.480 |
They honored me with their words, but their hearts were far from me. 00:58:56.840 |
They majored on what is minor, minored on what is major. 00:59:04.140 |
But when it came to justice, and grace, and mercy, they would ignore it. 00:59:14.960 |
They were constantly judging other people while they themselves were not practicing. 00:59:23.440 |
They focused on the cleansing of the outside, but inwardly they were not focused. 00:59:29.420 |
I mean, inwardly you're bitter, angry, you slander, right? 00:59:32.960 |
You hold on to grudges, and you can't let go of things that somebody wronged you in the past. 00:59:42.920 |
But they were unaware or refused to expose what's going on in their own heart. 00:59:50.200 |
Focus on cleansing the outside, not the inside. 00:59:52.120 |
And in Luke chapter 20, 20 through 21, they constantly sought seat of honor. 01:00:02.680 |
At the core of hypocrisy, Martin Lloyd-Jones says, at the core of hypocrisy is wanting the world and the church. 01:00:14.080 |
You don't want to forfeit the world, nor do you want to forfeit what you have in the church. 01:00:18.580 |
So hypocrisy is somebody who is not letting go of either. 01:00:22.580 |
And so the reason why you don't want that is because you want favor of men. 01:00:29.280 |
And so you want to be honored at church, but you also want to be honored in the world. 01:00:32.320 |
So at the church, you present what you have externally. 01:00:36.780 |
And then when you're in the world, you present the other things. 01:00:41.960 |
And then finally, hypocrisy led them to kill Jesus. 01:00:48.280 |
They were willing to do whatever it took to hold on to what they have established. 01:00:59.580 |
I mean, they first started to come to Jesus because they thought he had all the evidence of the Messiah. 01:01:04.780 |
But the only reason why they turned against him is because Jesus saw their hypocrisy. 01:01:10.860 |
He saw beyond their praying and evangelizing and their giving, their tithing. 01:01:21.680 |
And he was exposing what they were trying so hard to hide. 01:01:39.980 |
Because if he was really from God, he would appreciate what we've done. 01:01:44.900 |
If he was really from God, he would recognize how hard we have worked. 01:01:48.960 |
But the fact that he's pointing these things out, he must go. 01:01:57.820 |
Typically, people who live in hypocrisy are hypersensitive to criticism. 01:02:10.660 |
But that's what it's like trying to reveal truth to a hypocrite who's trying so hard to present themselves some way. 01:02:18.900 |
And then when their insides are revealed, they squirm. 01:02:23.560 |
And that's exactly what the Pharisees were doing, these scribes. 01:02:29.960 |
So Jesus is telling the disciples, what they're telling you in public, that's not what they're saying to each other in private. 01:02:38.580 |
In public, because they know that Jesus is love. 01:02:47.380 |
So in order for the Pharisees to come, if they're seeking man's approval, he can't go against these people. 01:02:53.160 |
So they were stuck in a rock and a hard place. 01:02:57.900 |
Because they lived their whole lives to get respect from these people. 01:03:02.920 |
So how do you get rid of Jesus without losing the people that they've worked so hard to get respect from? 01:03:15.040 |
Maybe if we ask him some questions that he can't answer. 01:03:24.640 |
Maybe if we expose certain things that he's weak at. 01:03:27.480 |
And then we could tell the people, this man can't be from God. 01:03:31.440 |
But they've already determined in their heart, he needs to go. 01:03:34.640 |
So from this day on, until they find a way to crucify him, they were living under this tension because they were hypocrites. 01:03:44.480 |
How do we get rid of Jesus and not lose these people? 01:03:52.000 |
Truth of who they are, number three, will eventually be revealed. 01:04:00.620 |
They're saying great things out in the public, but privately they are plotting to kill me. 01:04:15.680 |
And eventually they are plotting to kill you. 01:04:20.940 |
It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles a man, but what proceeds out of the mouth that defiles the man. 01:04:26.260 |
You will see eventually what comes out of his mouth. 01:04:28.960 |
They're doing all these righteous things, but eventually you'll see who they really are when they're in private, the things that they're saying. 01:04:42.340 |
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good. 01:04:45.560 |
And the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil. 01:04:48.600 |
For his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. 01:04:54.940 |
This is two reasons why he gives such harsh warning to his disciples. 01:05:03.020 |
If this is uncomfortable, next week is going to be added on to this, and the week after that is going to be added on to that. 01:05:24.000 |
Because they sit in Moses' seat, do what they do, but do not do what they do. 01:05:29.660 |
Do what they say, but do not do what they do. 01:05:35.840 |
Listen to the scripture, but do not follow them. 01:05:42.280 |
For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 01:06:11.780 |
The desire for nice things that you have, I have. 01:06:30.260 |
You can quote them because they help you to understand, but at the end of the day, it must be scripture. 01:06:39.000 |
Because if you put your confidence in men, as soon as you are away from that man, your faith falls apart. 01:06:47.900 |

It is not safe for us to put our hope in men. 01:07:29.360 |

And oftentimes it will come from the hypocrites. 01:09:36.640 |
where he is loving and never judges anything for any reason. 01:23:45.280 |
Now the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and eternal 01:23:51.280 |
Strengthen, restore, and encourage us, Lord God, that we may live lives worthy of the gospel 01:25:57.540 |
You're my friend, you're my friend, you're my friend, you're my friend, you're my friend, 01:26:27.520 |
anything, you're my friend, you're my friend, you're my friend, you're my friend, 01:26:57.500 |
All my heart's desire and my hope to worship you. 01:27:35.500 |

Like, probably, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 01:28:31.500 |
