00:21:11.580 | of how we're gonna be praying tonight.
00:21:13.620 | In Matthew 6, nine, sorry, let me read.
00:21:17.260 | Let me just read it off here.
00:21:19.660 | Matthew 6, five through 15,
00:21:22.680 | it begins by telling us what not to do
00:21:26.420 | and Jesus says, "When you pray,
00:21:28.180 | "you are not to be like the hypocrites,
00:21:30.440 | "for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues
00:21:32.700 | "and on the street corners
00:21:33.740 | "so that they may be seen by men.
00:21:35.160 | "Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full."
00:21:38.480 | And so basically, he's saying there's a pattern of prayer
00:21:41.100 | that they pray and their prayer is not effective,
00:21:43.220 | even though the Pharisees are actually known
00:21:47.060 | for their prayer, but their prayers were ineffective
00:21:50.180 | because they were doing it for themselves.
00:21:52.140 | So there is a way to pray where God does not answer.
00:21:55.220 | Just because we pray doesn't mean that God is pleased.
00:21:58.380 | So first, he tells us how not to pray.
00:22:01.400 | But you, when you pray, go into your inner room,
00:22:04.240 | close your door and pray to your father who is in secret
00:22:07.320 | and your father who sees what is done in secret
00:22:09.880 | will reward you.
00:22:11.280 | So the natural question is, what are we doing here, right?
00:22:14.840 | So why are we praying in public?
00:22:16.760 | They focus on prayer so that they can be seen by others.
00:22:21.360 | We have the exact opposite problem.
00:22:26.680 | Our tendency is because people don't see,
00:22:29.940 | we tend to not pray.
00:22:30.940 | We tend to focus on things that people can see
00:22:34.060 | because they can't see that whether we prayed or not,
00:22:36.840 | we have a tendency to not to do it.
00:22:38.760 | So the reason why we gather together for corporate prayer,
00:22:40.900 | obviously, God tells us to make this a house of prayer.
00:22:44.020 | But secondly, we pray corporately
00:22:45.460 | so that you can pray in private, right?
00:22:48.580 | Sometimes we have to exercise our muscles
00:22:50.620 | to be able to use that when we're at home.
00:22:52.220 | And so our corporate prayer hopefully will help us
00:22:55.740 | so that we can pray in private.
00:22:57.460 | But ultimately, this is not,
00:22:59.920 | if this is all your prayer life is,
00:23:02.540 | obviously, you don't have a prayer life.
00:23:04.140 | You can't say that because we gather once a month

00:23:12.800 | This is only to encourage us
00:23:14.680 | so that we can have a habit of prayer,
00:23:16.700 | that we can have a life, a pattern of prayer.
00:23:19.060 | And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition
00:23:22.260 | as the Gentiles do for they suppose that they will be heard
00:23:25.540 | for their many words.
00:23:26.460 | So do not be like them for your father knows what you need
00:23:29.500 | before you ask him.

00:24:55.980 | I need help.
00:24:56.820 | I need help.
00:24:57.960 | My mom needs help.
00:24:58.860 | My brother needs help.
00:24:59.860 | My sisters need help.
00:25:01.220 | And just come before the Lord and be sincere
00:25:04.460 | and cry out to God in prayer, okay?
00:25:07.060 | You can go to the next.
00:25:08.700 | And then he says, don't pray that way,
00:25:10.180 | and then pray this way.
00:25:11.820 | Pray then in this way, our Father who is in heaven,
00:25:14.620 | hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
00:25:16.820 | your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:25:19.260 | Give us this day our daily bread
00:25:20.900 | and forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors.
00:25:23.820 | And do not lead us into temptation,
00:25:25.580 | but deliver us from evil.
00:25:27.180 | And let me just stop right there.
00:25:28.500 | If you can go to the next screen.
00:25:30.140 | The lines vertical and horizontal,
00:25:35.020 | the lines are a little bit too thin,
00:25:36.820 | but that's basically what those lines are.
00:25:39.060 | If you look at the Lord's Prayer,
00:25:40.220 | it's broken down into two categories.
00:25:42.300 | You have a vertical prayer between us and God,
00:25:44.820 | and then it prays for a horizontal relationship
00:25:48.980 | between others and ourselves, right?
00:25:52.380 | Just like in anything that we do,
00:25:54.940 | unless our vertical line with God is connected,
00:25:58.500 | our horizontal line, you can't be fixed.
00:26:01.660 | Oftentimes what we end up doing is,
00:26:03.780 | we feel the sense of urgency
00:26:05.820 | when our horizontal line is broken.
00:26:08.900 | Relational issues, family issues,
00:26:11.180 | we have temptation falling to sin,
00:26:13.220 | and we have a tendency to come to the Lord
00:26:16.100 | in the horizontal line, right?
00:26:19.500 | But the first thing, no matter what situation is,
00:26:22.460 | is our vertical line.
00:26:24.420 | Am I connected right with God?
00:26:25.780 | Before you're concerned about anything else,
00:26:27.340 | am I connected right with God?
00:26:29.260 | So the two things that he mentions,
00:26:31.020 | and we're gonna start praying with this first,
00:26:33.060 | and I'm gonna give you a chunk of time to pray,
00:26:34.860 | and then we'll deal with the horizontal afterwards.
00:26:37.880 | When he says, "Our Father who is in heaven,
00:26:41.480 | "hallowed be your name."
00:26:43.500 | If you look at the first part of it,
00:26:44.780 | it says, "Hallowed be your name.
00:26:46.180 | "Your kingdom come, your will be done
00:26:48.580 | "on earth as it is in heaven."
00:26:50.340 | So if you look at, go back to the line.
00:26:53.340 | So the first part of the prayer is lordship, right?
00:26:58.900 | Is to pray that he would be Lord.
00:27:01.680 | Now in the New Testament,
00:27:02.840 | the word Lord is used in various ways.
00:27:04.900 | Lord could be a way of just expressing honor, like sir,
00:27:09.900 | right, and so you can call just some stranger,
00:27:12.980 | just in an honorific way, saying sir, sir this, sir that.
00:27:16.860 | Is that the way he's using the word Lord here?
00:27:19.420 | Or another way to say Lord is Lord is in somebody
00:27:22.700 | who is above you, right?
00:27:24.760 | They may not have legal authority over you,
00:27:29.160 | but it's just a way of expressing somebody like a rabbi,
00:27:32.820 | or maybe somebody higher than that, a governor or king.
00:27:36.180 | Is that the way he's using it?
00:27:37.700 | The way that the word Lord is being used here
00:27:41.700 | is the way that the Jews used the word Adonai
00:27:44.340 | of the Old Testament,
00:27:45.740 | and basically it's to express masterhood.
00:27:49.440 | To say your name, hallowed be your name, not my name, right?
00:27:55.660 | How much of my prayer is about my reputation?
00:28:01.660 | You know, sometimes we think like what kind of,
00:28:04.180 | what kind of legacy would you want to leave when you die?
00:28:07.220 | That thought in itself is self-centered.
00:28:10.440 | You don't need a legacy.
00:28:11.900 | Nobody needs to remember you,
00:28:13.860 | other than the fact that you loved the Lord,
00:28:16.400 | and then you went with the Lord, that's it.
00:28:18.000 | Oh, I want to be known as a humble man.
00:28:19.420 | I want to be known as this man.
00:28:20.780 | I want to be known as a man who strove for God.
00:28:23.780 | No, you don't need to be remembered, you're a servant.
00:28:26.780 | If you did a good job, they'll remember Christ,
00:28:29.880 | and then that's it.
00:28:32.100 | He said, hallowed be your name, not my name.
00:28:34.300 | How much of the headaches do we incur on ourselves
00:28:38.020 | because we're so concerned about my life?
00:28:41.660 | What kind of life, what kind of meaning,
00:28:43.500 | what would I leave behind?
00:28:45.060 | Don't worry about any of that.
00:28:47.140 | Our single goal is hallowed be your name.
00:28:50.220 | If because of you, other people love Christ,
00:28:54.300 | and they don't even remember your name,
00:28:55.860 | then you've done your job.
00:28:56.860 | Then that's the best servant.
00:28:58.980 | A servant is not somebody who leaves behind his name,
00:29:02.060 | and his legacy, and they make a monument for you.
00:29:05.820 | That's not a good servant.
00:29:06.820 | A good servant basically points to his master,
00:29:10.380 | and his master gets a credit
00:29:11.780 | for everything that you've done.
00:29:13.820 | The first beginning of the Lord's Prayer
00:29:16.500 | is a surrender of lordship to him, that he's my master.
00:29:20.640 | Hallowed be your name, not my name,
00:29:24.220 | not other people's name, not our church's name,
00:29:27.420 | but hallowed be your name, and your kingdom come.
00:29:31.300 | Your kingdom come.
00:29:33.020 | He's my master, and so it is his kingdom,
00:29:35.380 | his will, his purpose, his glory,
00:29:37.260 | his joy that we are praying for.
00:29:40.660 | So first and foremost, we need to remember when we pray,
00:29:44.340 | how much of the content of my prayer
00:29:47.060 | is about my will being done?
00:29:48.940 | How much of the content of my prayer
00:29:50.660 | is a concern that my name is remembered,
00:29:54.380 | and my reputation is built up?
00:29:56.620 | Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:30:00.580 | Repeatedly, over and over again,
00:30:02.020 | the Bible reminds us that Jesus Christ
00:30:04.460 | is Savior and Lord.
00:30:06.540 | Luke 2:11, "For today in the city of David,
00:30:08.700 | "there has been born for you a Savior
00:30:11.420 | "who is Christ the Lord."
00:30:14.580 | There's no other Lord above him, he is the Lord.
00:30:16.700 | Romans 10:9, "If you confess with your mouth
00:30:19.060 | "that Jesus as Lord," right?
00:30:22.420 | "Not just Jesus as Savior, but Jesus as Lord,
00:30:25.540 | "and believe in your heart that God raised him
00:30:27.380 | "from the dead, you will be saved."
00:30:30.800 | Now one of the core books that we have at our church,
00:30:32.860 | we're reading it through the Bible study,
00:30:34.820 | but again, another core book that we have
00:30:37.240 | is Gospel According to Jesus,
00:30:38.820 | which if you haven't read it,
00:30:40.660 | I highly encourage you to read that,
00:30:42.500 | because again, our generation,
00:30:44.300 | the concept of Lord is offensive, right?
00:30:48.340 | Because it's our will, it's our purpose,
00:30:50.700 | it's our joy, but salvation comes
00:30:53.740 | when we recognize his Lordship,
00:30:55.420 | and it can't be just empty words, right?
00:30:59.420 | So the question is, is he Lord?
00:31:02.500 | Am I seeking his glory, his will, his honor, right?
00:31:07.500 | Or am I concerned, am I using God
00:31:09.780 | so that my family can be better?
00:31:11.300 | Am I using God in prayer
00:31:12.860 | so that my children will be taken care of?
00:31:14.860 | Am I using God for my peace, for my marriage?
00:31:18.780 | Or how much of our prayer is coming before the Lord,
00:31:21.660 | seeking his will, his glory?
00:31:23.700 | Acts 2:36, "Therefore, let all the house of Israel
00:31:27.060 | "know for certain that God has made him
00:31:28.940 | "both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucify."
00:31:33.380 | Christ is Lord, repeated over and over again.
00:31:37.140 | 2 Corinthians 4, 5, "For we do not preach ourselves,
00:31:40.020 | "but Christ Jesus as Lord."
00:31:42.620 | Even the gospel preaching wasn't simply,
00:31:45.420 | God loves you and wants to save you.
00:31:48.020 | He says, no, he preached Christ as Lord.
00:31:50.460 | He must be your Lord.
00:31:52.460 | That's why we're in the condition that we're in,
00:31:54.380 | because we rebelled against his Lordship.
00:31:57.420 | So the whole purpose of preaching the gospel
00:31:59.260 | is to bring a fallen, rebellious world
00:32:02.340 | under his Lordship, right?
00:32:04.580 | And that can't be just empty words.
00:32:06.680 | It has to be the life of the church.
00:32:10.180 | It has to be the content of our prayer,
00:32:12.740 | that we wrestle with our flesh to make him our Lord, right?
00:32:17.500 | Not simply with words, not simply in theology,
00:32:20.620 | but is he really Lord?
00:32:24.380 | 1 Corinthians 6, 20 says, "You have been purchased
00:32:27.760 | "with a price, therefore honor God with your body."
00:32:31.740 | This is not our body.
00:32:33.780 | This is not our life.
00:32:36.020 | This is not my family.
00:32:38.380 | This is not my future.
00:32:39.780 | These are not my kids.
00:32:41.680 | We have been purchased.
00:32:42.780 | So everything that belongs to me
00:32:44.780 | has been given to me as a steward.
00:32:48.060 | I'm a steward of my family.
00:32:49.540 | I'm a steward of my children.
00:32:51.360 | I'm a steward of my possessions.
00:32:53.780 | Then none of that belongs to me.
00:32:55.180 | No servant stands before his master
00:32:57.260 | and says, "That's yours, but this is mine."
00:33:00.100 | If he's my master and he's my Lord,
00:33:02.340 | everything I have belongs to him.
00:33:04.340 | My children are his.
00:33:06.380 | My family is his.
00:33:07.380 | My future is his.
00:33:08.400 | I belong to him, right?
00:33:10.540 | So the first and foremost, he says, "Pray in this way.
00:33:14.440 | "Pray to surrender."
00:33:15.940 | Before you pray for anything,
00:33:18.860 | no matter what's going on in your life,
00:33:20.760 | the question we need to come before the Lord
00:33:22.460 | and wrestle with is, "Am I surrendered?"
00:33:24.740 | Am I surrendered?
00:33:27.740 | And we're gonna go over what specific areas
00:33:30.220 | that you need to surrender after.
00:33:32.900 | Second part, he says, "Give us this day our daily bread."
00:33:35.700 | This is a prayer, again,
00:33:36.940 | in the vertical line of dependence.
00:33:39.480 | You notice how he doesn't say, "Give me this day enough
00:33:43.940 | "so that I don't have to worry about retirement."
00:33:45.900 | There's nothing wrong with putting money away
00:33:47.540 | for retirement, but you know that the contents
00:33:49.500 | of his prayer is that, "Give me this day
00:33:51.640 | "our my daily bread, my daily bread."
00:33:56.020 | This is also a prayer of surrender, that I will trust you.
00:33:59.380 | It doesn't mean that you shouldn't be responsible.
00:34:01.300 | It doesn't mean that you shouldn't be good with money,
00:34:04.560 | but the content of prayer is a prayer of surrender,
00:34:07.220 | that my life, my decisions, what I do, that I rely on him,
00:34:13.140 | not to collect more than what I need
00:34:16.420 | so that I will be comfortable.
00:34:17.620 | I don't wanna have to depend on him every day.
00:34:19.860 | I wanna pray hard today, and then I collect enough
00:34:22.360 | so I don't have to pray to him tomorrow,
00:34:24.520 | so I don't have to rely on him next year.
00:34:26.500 | That's our tendency, but he tells us
00:34:30.000 | to pray specifically this way
00:34:31.480 | because he wants us to depend on him every single day,
00:34:34.920 | because we may depend on him tomorrow
00:34:36.800 | and drift today and drift tomorrow.
00:34:39.480 | We may depend on him this year and then drift the next year,
00:34:42.880 | and so the principle that he was teaching the Israelites
00:34:46.000 | when he told them to only collect manna for that day
00:34:49.520 | is because he was trying to teach them,
00:34:52.140 | trust me for tomorrow, be faithful today.
00:34:56.260 | Trust me for tomorrow, be faithful.
00:34:57.900 | How long do I do this?
00:34:59.420 | Until I come, until I come.
00:35:03.320 | Not until you have enough for retirement,
00:35:04.900 | not until you have a nice house, but every single day.
00:35:08.460 | So this is a prayer of dependence.
00:35:11.680 | Do I really depend on him, or do I pray
00:35:14.580 | so that I no longer have to depend on him?
00:35:17.060 | I will not answer that prayer.
00:35:19.480 | He's not going to self-defeat his main purpose,
00:35:24.480 | because his primary purpose is
00:35:26.640 | so that you will depend on him.
00:35:28.340 | So if making you wealthy causes you to be independent,
00:35:33.480 | he's going against his own will.
00:35:35.820 | He cannot answer that prayer,
00:35:38.440 | because if he answers that prayer, you will drift.
00:35:42.840 | You will not pray.
00:35:44.440 | You will not come to him.
00:35:45.520 | You will become proud.
00:35:47.780 | So that prayer is against his will.
00:35:50.160 | His will is so that you and I would surrender.
00:35:53.360 | Give us this day our daily bread.
00:35:57.840 | Seek ye first the kingdom of God,
00:35:59.920 | and all these things shall be added unto you.
00:36:02.820 | He who did not spare his own son,
00:36:04.320 | how will he not along with him give us all things?
00:36:06.400 | Do you actually believe that?
00:36:08.720 | It's easy to say Christ died for me.
00:36:10.360 | I love God because he gave his only begotten son for me,
00:36:14.200 | and then the very next minute we turn around,
00:36:17.860 | I'm not sure if he will provide for my finances.
00:36:21.720 | If you really believe and confess
00:36:24.740 | that he gave his only begotten son,
00:36:26.180 | how will he not along with him
00:36:27.660 | give him everything that you need?
00:36:29.420 | Why are we so anxious about what we don't have?
00:36:34.660 | Does God not have the power to give it to you?
00:36:37.340 | Is it because he doesn't love you enough?
00:36:40.380 | How can you believe that he loved you so much
00:36:42.340 | that he would give his only begotten son
00:36:44.960 | and wrestle so much with trivial things in our lives?
00:36:49.160 | He who did not spare his own things,
00:36:50.360 | how will he not along with him give you all things?
00:36:53.040 | So it says in James, do not say today or tomorrow
00:36:55.640 | I will do this or that because we do not know
00:36:58.400 | where we're gonna be tomorrow.
00:37:00.600 | So this line, first and foremost,
00:37:02.960 | is a prayer of dependence, prayer of lordship.
00:37:05.880 | So if you can go to the next slide.
00:37:07.640 | So this is what we're gonna be praying for specifically.
00:37:12.620 | Is Christ lord over your finances?
00:37:16.000 | We can talk about time, people, decisions,
00:37:22.140 | but where the rubber meets the road is your money.
00:37:24.660 | This is the reason why Jesus talks about this subject
00:37:27.660 | so much because he says where your treasure is,
00:37:30.100 | there your heart is.
00:37:32.620 | So if Christ is not lord over your finances,
00:37:36.000 | he probably isn't your lord.
00:37:37.680 | You make him your lord, you'd say he's lord,
00:37:41.180 | but he's not actually lord because lordship
00:37:44.380 | is expressed through finances, right?
00:37:48.600 | So is he lord over your finances, first and foremost, right?
00:37:53.020 | Secondly, your time, look at the way you use your time.
00:37:58.180 | Is he lord over your time?
00:38:01.580 | Now I'm not saying that every single waking minute
00:38:03.600 | that you have to be reading the Bible and studying,
00:38:06.540 | but is worship of God something you do on Sunday
00:38:11.540 | in a Bible study and then the rest of the time is yours?
00:38:16.420 | Or is my whole life dedicated for his glory, right?
00:38:19.820 | The use of your concern for future, right?
00:38:25.200 | How much of what we choose not to do today
00:38:27.700 | is because we're afraid we're not gonna get it tomorrow.
00:38:31.040 | So he's not lord over your future.
00:38:32.780 | Whatever tomorrow may bring, because of the decisions
00:38:36.340 | and the things that I do today,
00:38:37.820 | he's lord over today and tomorrow.
00:38:40.620 | So if he is lord today, whatever that leads me to tomorrow,
00:38:44.400 | he is also lord.
00:38:46.420 | But oftentimes we don't wanna obey today
00:38:48.700 | or we compromise today because we're concerned
00:38:51.940 | that tomorrow we're not gonna get what we want.
00:38:54.700 | Is he lord over your future?
00:38:57.820 | Are you living your life today fully confident
00:39:01.720 | that he is also lord over tomorrow, whatever that may be?
00:39:06.060 | Your career, right?
00:39:08.620 | How much of you are striving, praying, working,
00:39:12.140 | compromising to get ahead in your career,
00:39:15.860 | living in fear that you might lose your job
00:39:18.260 | or you might not be able to advance in your job?
00:39:20.860 | Or do you not believe that he is also lord over your career?
00:39:27.660 | That what you have and don't have is in his hands, right?
00:39:31.860 | I do what he wants me to do and whatever that leads to,
00:39:36.060 | whether that leads to poverty, whether that leads to wealth,
00:39:39.420 | he is lord.
00:39:40.780 | Is he your lord?
00:39:42.580 | Is he lord over your family and your children?
00:39:45.020 | I can be, I don't have a problem making him lord
00:39:49.200 | over my life, but is he also lord over your children?
00:39:51.900 | That if you commit your children to the lord,
00:39:58.060 | you're afraid that they might not be able to get
00:39:59.860 | to the school that they want to.
00:40:01.000 | They might not get married to the person
00:40:02.460 | that you want them to get married to.
00:40:03.700 | You may not have the career or the future
00:40:06.620 | that maybe you want.
00:40:08.300 | And so you don't have a problem surrendering yourself,
00:40:11.180 | but maybe he's not lord over your children.
00:40:13.760 | If he's lord, he's also lord over your children.
00:40:18.240 | Wherever God takes you and wherever God takes you,
00:40:21.700 | wherever God takes your children, he is also lord, right?
00:40:25.420 | Is he lord over your reputation?
00:40:30.840 | Right?
00:40:31.940 | What other people think of you.
00:40:34.420 | Are you paralyzed because you're concerned
00:40:37.580 | that if you do certain things or not do certain things
00:40:39.740 | that people will view you a certain way
00:40:41.280 | and you do certain things because you're concerned
00:40:43.660 | about the reputation of how people view you.
00:40:46.040 | You want to be known as a godly man, a man of the Bible.
00:40:50.940 | You want to be known as a gracious man.
00:40:52.420 | You want to be known as a hard worker.
00:40:55.100 | And so much of you is being driven
00:40:58.380 | because of your reputation or how people will think of you,
00:41:02.320 | whether good or bad.
00:41:03.800 | That's not up to you to decide.
00:41:07.040 | We just obey.
00:41:08.860 | We just obey.
00:41:10.640 | And even if you obey, you may get a bad reputation.
00:41:13.900 | Even if you obey, people may criticize you,
00:41:18.440 | question your motive.
00:41:20.400 | How much of our lives are paralyzed
00:41:23.060 | because we're concerned about what other people
00:41:24.800 | will think of us and we can't live in full obedience.
00:41:27.180 | We can only obey in the things
00:41:29.560 | that keeps us in a safe zone.
00:41:31.340 | Is he Lord?
00:41:33.620 | So the first part of prayer is established lordship.
00:41:37.760 | Am I seeking his glory, his will, not mine?
00:41:42.760 | Am I depending on him?
00:41:45.120 | So when he says, if you abide in me,
00:41:47.480 | in my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish,
00:41:50.160 | it shall be done for you.
00:41:51.040 | In other words, there's a condition to effective prayer.
00:41:53.480 | We can be here all night crying out
00:41:56.500 | and praying passionately and God does not hear
00:42:00.480 | a single word because it has nothing to do with his will.
00:42:04.880 | We're praying against his will
00:42:07.980 | and God will not answer that prayer
00:42:09.820 | because God knows what is best for you
00:42:13.580 | and what is best for me and what is best for our church
00:42:15.940 | is for his will to be done, for his glory to shine
00:42:20.340 | because the moment we seek our glory,
00:42:23.200 | we will drift from him and that is the worst place
00:42:26.460 | for any child of God to be.
00:42:28.760 | So first and foremost, as we surrender these things,
00:42:31.540 | as we pray, let's be honest with ourselves.
00:42:34.180 | Don't skim over these things.
00:42:36.660 | As you think about these areas, is he truly Lord?
00:42:41.300 | Maybe you focus so much energy
00:42:43.000 | on what other people are not doing
00:42:44.560 | and you become blind to the areas
00:42:47.300 | and you just kind of excused certain things
00:42:51.060 | because certain things you deemed more important.
00:42:54.480 | Don't focus your prayer on what other people need to do.
00:43:00.180 | Tonight, when we pray, at least for the first part,
00:43:02.300 | pray along these lines.
00:43:04.540 | If there's any part of it that I'm wrestling with
00:43:06.340 | that I did not give to the Lord, come before the Lord.
00:43:08.820 | Lord, hallowed be your name, that your kingdom come,
00:43:13.740 | your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:43:15.980 | So let's pray for the next about 15 minutes
00:43:19.060 | and then I'll come back and I'll get us
00:43:20.460 | to the horizontal line and then we'll bring us
00:43:23.540 | back together, okay?
00:43:24.460 | So let's pray for about 15 minutes
00:43:25.820 | and I'll bring us back together.

00:58:18.420 | (gentle music)
00:58:31.500 | (gentle music)
00:58:34.080 | (gentle music)
00:58:44.080 | (gentle music)
00:58:54.160 | (gentle music)
00:58:56.740 | - Let's get to the second part.
00:59:13.740 | If you can go back, yeah, to the second part.
00:59:19.120 | First part of the prayer is our
00:59:21.240 | horizontal relationship with God.
00:59:22.860 | And then the second part where it says,
00:59:24.320 | "And forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors."
00:59:28.240 | And so this is a prayer of our relationship
00:59:30.860 | with other people to practice grace.
00:59:33.160 | And then, "Do not lead us into temptation,
00:59:35.040 | "but deliver us from evil."
00:59:36.540 | And this is a practice of self-control.
00:59:39.500 | And so, first and foremost,
00:59:42.040 | if we're not surrendered before God,
00:59:43.660 | whatever horizontal relationship that we have,
00:59:46.160 | it may be a result of not surrendering.
00:59:49.200 | It may be a result of being selfish
00:59:51.200 | and seeking our own glory.
00:59:52.880 | And sometimes, even as we're doing God's work,
00:59:55.540 | so much of it is we want our face to be seen.
00:59:59.000 | And even as we are preaching,
01:00:00.700 | even as we are doing God's work,
01:00:03.460 | so much of it, if we're not careful,
01:00:05.380 | is seeking our own glory.
01:00:06.920 | But as that is established, the other part of it is,
01:00:11.340 | he says, "Ask for forgiveness."
01:00:13.460 | But there's a condition to that, right?
01:00:17.400 | Don't ask God to be gracious
01:00:20.060 | if you refuse to be gracious, right?
01:00:23.640 | Don't expect grace from others
01:00:25.640 | if that's not what you're practicing.
01:00:27.220 | He says, "Forgive us our debts
01:00:30.140 | "as we also have forgiven our debtors."
01:00:32.680 | This is a practice of love with one another, right?
01:00:36.760 | If you have a habit of surrounding yourself
01:00:39.180 | with people that you like,
01:00:41.340 | you're not practicing Jesus' love.
01:00:43.100 | You're practicing love that the world practices.
01:00:45.980 | It's no different than the world, right?
01:00:48.400 | But this is a love that makes us different
01:00:51.520 | from the rest of the world.
01:00:52.520 | The world will know we are his disciples
01:00:54.240 | if we have love for one another as Jesus loved us.
01:00:57.040 | Then they will know we're his disciples.
01:00:59.280 | So if all we practice is love
01:01:01.400 | toward people who are lovable,
01:01:03.680 | that's not a Christian love.
01:01:05.360 | That's just love that the world practices.
01:01:07.600 | So he says, "First and foremost,
01:01:09.980 | "we have to make an effort,
01:01:11.020 | "and nothing will kill your pride
01:01:14.440 | "more than loving somebody
01:01:15.640 | "that you don't think deserves it."
01:01:17.560 | Nothing will kill your pride and your will
01:01:21.160 | more than when you are actively pursuing somebody
01:01:24.480 | who doesn't like you.
01:01:25.560 | But that's what he tells us to do, right?
01:01:30.280 | "Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors."
01:01:34.720 | Maybe some of you are just nice people
01:01:36.340 | and you don't know a single person
01:01:37.600 | that they don't like you or you don't like them, right?
01:01:40.840 | That may be, that may be,
01:01:43.640 | again, I'm not saying that it is,
01:01:45.020 | that may be because you live in fear of a man, right?
01:01:49.540 | That you're speaking love,
01:01:52.180 | but you're not speaking the truth in love.
01:01:54.620 | I don't know anybody who lives,
01:01:56.660 | tries to live a righteous life
01:01:58.740 | who doesn't have conflict with some people,
01:02:01.340 | even with good intentions.
01:02:03.420 | And so if we're not in the habit
01:02:04.860 | of practicing grace with one another,
01:02:07.980 | there's no way that you can have a relationship
01:02:10.460 | with other sinners.
01:02:12.260 | And so this is not a prayer for just a few people
01:02:16.180 | who happen to have hard personalities.
01:02:18.580 | Anybody who wants to live a righteous life,
01:02:20.660 | anybody who is living in a sinful world
01:02:22.820 | is gonna have conflicts with people.
01:02:24.380 | Some of it may be genuine,
01:02:25.820 | some of it may be misunderstanding,
01:02:27.660 | some of it, they may deserve it.
01:02:29.460 | But he calls us, he says, "Forgive us our debts
01:02:34.000 | "as we have forgiven others."
01:02:36.260 | In other words, you've done that first.
01:02:38.540 | Before you come to the altar,
01:02:40.020 | he says, "To reconcile with your brother first."
01:02:43.700 | Get that right, if anything, in your heart
01:02:47.140 | that you are committing to be gracious, to be loving.
01:02:52.100 | So the question naturally is,
01:02:54.540 | if you're gonna ask God for forgiveness,
01:02:56.380 | we have to remember what he's forgiven us for.
01:02:58.980 | How faithful have you been?
01:03:00.740 | If you're concerned about the faithfulness of other people,
01:03:03.180 | how faithful have you been?
01:03:05.540 | Did you deserve, when you asked for forgiveness,
01:03:07.580 | were you asking for something that you deserve?
01:03:11.340 | Did you earn that?
01:03:12.180 | No, you're begging for mercy.
01:03:13.920 | So there's somebody in our lives
01:03:16.500 | that don't deserve your forgiveness.
01:03:19.100 | They don't deserve your grace,
01:03:21.000 | just as you and I did not deserve it.
01:03:23.460 | If we think long and hard about our position
01:03:25.900 | before this holy God, every single one of us
01:03:28.660 | is here because God showed mercy to us.
01:03:31.100 | All he's telling us to do
01:03:32.900 | is to practice what we preach with other people.
01:03:36.420 | And then he says, do not lead us into temptation,
01:03:38.860 | but deliver us from evil.
01:03:41.020 | So the question is, usually the temptation comes
01:03:46.940 | often because what we covet.
01:03:49.360 | We covet, if you're struggling with purity,
01:03:54.620 | you're coveting something that God didn't give you.
01:03:57.980 | Belongs to somebody else, and you want that.
01:04:01.900 | And that's where lust comes from.
01:04:04.740 | God didn't give it to you, that's not yours
01:04:07.020 | until God says she is yours at the altar.
01:04:11.660 | But until that happens, she's not yours,
01:04:13.620 | God didn't give that person to you.
01:04:15.700 | And so usually temptation comes
01:04:17.660 | when we covet what other people have.
01:04:20.140 | That could be money, that could be time,
01:04:21.980 | that could be reputation.
01:04:23.900 | But when we covet what other people have,
01:04:25.900 | some people are married, some people have children,
01:04:27.940 | some people have good jobs, some people have a nice house.
01:04:30.860 | And so the temptation comes when we begin to compare.
01:04:34.780 | If you're living out in the desert with nobody around you,
01:04:37.660 | none of that matters.
01:04:39.940 | If you're living out in the desert and you're doing fine,
01:04:42.940 | you have food to eat and you have a shelter,
01:04:44.500 | you're not freezing to death and you can take a bath,
01:04:47.720 | you're not coveting to have a nice car,
01:04:50.220 | you're not coveting to have a nice house.
01:04:51.860 | You covet because you live among other people who have it.
01:04:55.380 | And so we watch those things
01:04:57.260 | and then we allow it to come into our eyes
01:04:59.460 | and then we allow it to percolate
01:05:01.340 | and then we convince ourselves
01:05:03.220 | something that we want is a need.
01:05:05.940 | And then that's what leads us to temptation.
01:05:08.760 | And so the self-control part of it is one,
01:05:11.660 | the natural question is, what are you doing
01:05:15.300 | that causes you to allow coveting to be normal in your life?
01:05:20.300 | You know, we talk about window shopping.
01:05:22.180 | Like long time ago, people would go to the mall
01:05:23.740 | and say, "We're gonna window shopping."
01:05:24.860 | Window shopping basically is going to see what I want.
01:05:28.740 | I have no intention to buy it,
01:05:30.540 | but I'm gonna fill my heart and my mind
01:05:32.420 | with things that I'm not intending to buy, right?
01:05:36.740 | But I'm gonna go take a look
01:05:37.940 | and put it all in my mind and in my heart.
01:05:40.780 | Of course, you're gonna eventually buy it.
01:05:42.460 | When you come home, you're gonna be thinking about it,
01:05:44.180 | you're gonna be saving money with it,
01:05:45.900 | you're gonna watch if they have it.
01:05:48.260 | And so you deliberately placed yourself in a place
01:05:50.660 | where you're gonna end up coveting things
01:05:52.060 | that you're telling yourself you're not gonna get it,
01:05:54.120 | of course you're gonna get it, or at least try to get it.
01:05:56.860 | The problem with today is the coveting is on your phone.
01:06:00.300 | Right?
01:06:01.140 | It's on Instagram, you see what other people are doing,
01:06:03.420 | and they're highlighting the best parts of their life,
01:06:05.500 | and then you watch that and you covet it,
01:06:07.100 | and the next thing you know,
01:06:08.340 | you convince yourself that you also need it.
01:06:10.940 | They went to this place, I need to go there.
01:06:12.940 | They ate that food, I need to eat that.
01:06:15.260 | And so we fill ourselves with coveting.
01:06:19.100 | And so we live every single day coveting.
01:06:23.320 | And so the natural question that we need to ask ourselves
01:06:26.020 | is what am I doing to allow the coveting
01:06:29.140 | to be normal in my life?
01:06:31.520 | What am I watching?
01:06:32.700 | What am I comparing with?
01:06:35.580 | So this next part of it, the prayer, next one.
01:06:39.660 | No.
01:06:43.860 | Yeah, so pray, pray that God will give you strength
01:06:50.100 | to forgive anyone who may have wronged you.
01:06:52.820 | My guess is almost anybody in this room
01:06:55.680 | will have somebody that you have been harboring
01:06:58.060 | some kind of bitterness, okay?
01:07:00.260 | Maybe you just swept it under the rug,
01:07:02.160 | but when you think long and hard about it,
01:07:04.580 | I think almost everybody in this room
01:07:06.820 | could think of somebody that we feel like,
01:07:09.580 | maybe I need to let this go, right?
01:07:12.460 | Ask God for strength to practice
01:07:16.060 | what we're asking him to do for us.
01:07:17.820 | Pray that God will deliver you from grudges or bitterness
01:07:20.260 | that you have been harboring in your heart towards someone.
01:07:23.540 | And you do not realize when you harbor bitterness
01:07:25.760 | and you don't let it go,
01:07:26.840 | how much of that affects the way you look at scripture,
01:07:30.120 | how much of that affects your evangelism,
01:07:31.820 | how much of that affects your theology.
01:07:33.480 | You don't even know.
01:07:35.200 | That it taints, it's like reading the Bible
01:07:38.240 | with sunglasses on, and everything is seen through that lens
01:07:42.120 | when you allow bitterness and hatred
01:07:45.680 | to harbor in our hearts, okay?
01:07:48.480 | So ask the Lord to remove that,
01:07:51.800 | and you would actively try to remove that.
01:07:54.360 | Pray for deliverance against anything
01:07:55.720 | that you have been coveting.
01:07:57.120 | What is it in your heart right now that you're coveting,
01:08:01.160 | that you somehow convince, I need to have that?
01:08:03.920 | I need to have that house, I need to have that car,
01:08:05.880 | I need to have this vacation,
01:08:07.400 | and it's always in the back of your mind, right?
01:08:11.560 | And you're looking at it, you're looking at advertisement,
01:08:14.080 | you're looking at online, you're making jotting notes,
01:08:17.020 | and you don't realize how much of that has filled your heart
01:08:19.600 | and you don't realize how much of that is affecting
01:08:21.880 | the way you're looking at scripture.
01:08:24.400 | You don't realize how much of that
01:08:25.680 | is affecting you bearing fruit, right?
01:08:29.680 | And you think, well, I'm coveting,
01:08:30.680 | nobody knows, it's in my heart, right?
01:08:33.320 | But the Holy Spirit illuminates us,
01:08:35.480 | and if we have blinders on
01:08:37.360 | because we allow coveting to be normal,
01:08:39.720 | you don't even realize how much of that
01:08:42.040 | is causing you to be blind.
01:08:43.660 | You're not seeing scripture,
01:08:45.920 | you're not seeing God with pure eyes.
01:08:48.960 | You're seeing God through a lens of coveting.
01:08:52.300 | And even the way that you project
01:08:53.920 | what is right and what is wrong
01:08:55.600 | is coming through your desire for something
01:08:58.160 | that has nothing to do with God.
01:09:00.240 | Pray that God would deliver you from whatever coveting
01:09:03.320 | that you recognize in your heart.
01:09:04.800 | Pray for deliverance of specific temptations
01:09:06.760 | that you need victory over, right?
01:09:08.920 | At a young church, and even in an old church,
01:09:11.200 | sexual sin is always at the top of the list.
01:09:15.120 | Don't ever normalize.
01:09:18.580 | Don't ever normalize sexual sin
01:09:21.640 | just because we all struggle with it.
01:09:23.840 | Don't ever let anybody tell you that that's okay.
01:09:27.840 | It is not okay, right?
01:09:30.080 | All other sins, you sin outside your body,
01:09:32.280 | but this sexual sin, he said, you sin against your body.
01:09:34.680 | Do you not know that you are a temple of God,
01:09:36.680 | and the Spirit of God dwells in you?
01:09:39.220 | God says he made this his dwelling,
01:09:42.440 | and we cannot use this, right?
01:09:45.360 | You cannot use this in an unholy manner,
01:09:48.660 | and so struggle, fight.
01:09:52.020 | Like Jesus said, even if you have to cut off your left hand
01:09:55.900 | and gouge out your eyes, he said, to that extent,
01:09:57.940 | we should be fighting against this sin.
01:10:00.360 | In your struggles against sin, you have not shed blood.
01:10:03.740 | You did not shed.
01:10:04.580 | In other words, this sin, in particular this sin,
01:10:08.660 | you must fight, even if you have to fight,
01:10:10.540 | even if you can only gain an inch, you have to fight.
01:10:12.940 | Don't ever, don't ever allow anybody,
01:10:17.340 | any pastor, any friend, any church,
01:10:19.540 | to ever tell you that that's okay.
01:10:21.940 | It is not okay.
01:10:22.900 | It taints us in our prayer.
01:10:24.460 | It taints us in our witness.
01:10:25.820 | It taints us in the way we see Scripture.
01:10:28.000 | So any temptation, especially this sin, right?
01:10:31.380 | Struggle, struggle.
01:10:33.780 | Say, well, I feel guilty all the time.
01:10:35.740 | You should feel guilty.
01:10:37.120 | That guilt should lead you to repentance.
01:10:40.680 | Don't normalize sin, right?
01:10:43.240 | It's sin.
01:10:44.080 | Don't call it anything else but sin.
01:10:45.940 | And sin is something that we need to struggle,
01:10:48.360 | even if we struggle to the day we die, right?
01:10:51.640 | 'Cause perfection's gonna come when he comes.
01:10:54.520 | But don't ever, in between now and the time we get to heaven
01:10:58.740 | that we somehow, because it's hard,
01:11:01.540 | we somehow change the title of what we do
01:11:04.280 | so that we can normalize this and be accepted
01:11:06.600 | so we can live in peace.
01:11:08.080 | You cannot have peace with sin.
01:11:10.740 | Period.
01:11:12.060 | So pray that the Lord will deliver you
01:11:14.740 | from whatever you're struggling,
01:11:15.860 | that God will give you the strength
01:11:17.020 | to continue to fight, fight, fight.
01:11:19.200 | And pray that God will give you a heart of contentment
01:11:21.780 | in all circumstances.
01:11:22.860 | Coveting comes when you're not content, right?
01:11:26.100 | Coveting comes when you're not content.
01:11:28.780 | Think about it.
01:11:29.620 | Even sexual sin oftentimes creeps in
01:11:32.860 | when you're not content about something
01:11:34.780 | and you start looking for something else to satisfy you,
01:11:37.300 | and that's how temptation comes.
01:11:39.340 | So if your heart is not content with what God has given you,
01:11:44.220 | coveting, grumbling, complaining, bitterness,
01:11:47.860 | all creeps in, right?
01:11:49.920 | So pray, ultimately, that God will give you
01:11:52.700 | a heart of contentment,
01:11:54.320 | that you would be a man and woman of worship
01:11:57.860 | because what God has given me is enough.
01:12:02.020 | Period, right?
01:12:04.300 | Everything I need for the life of God
01:12:06.060 | has been given to me in the knowledge
01:12:07.260 | of his son, Jesus Christ.
01:12:08.540 | I have everything.
01:12:11.020 | I have everything today.
01:12:12.460 | Not tomorrow, not if I work hard,
01:12:14.540 | but I have everything today in Christ.
01:12:17.280 | That's where contentment comes from.
01:12:18.620 | Can you say that?
01:12:19.660 | And if you can't say that, that's where we need to pray.
01:12:23.140 | Pray that God would give us, open our eyes,
01:12:25.500 | so that I would live a life of contentment,
01:12:27.540 | so that I would be delivered from temptation and coveting.
01:12:31.340 | So for the next 15 minutes,
01:12:33.020 | let's take some time to pray over these topics.
01:12:35.380 | Then afterwards, we have some group prayer
01:12:37.780 | that I want to pray for,
01:12:39.020 | and then we'll wrap up this evening.
01:12:41.180 | Okay, let's pray.
01:12:42.220 | (soft piano music)
01:12:49.540 | (soft piano music)
01:12:52.460 | (soft piano music)
01:13:16.140 | (soft piano music)
01:13:19.060 | (soft piano music)
01:13:22.700 | (soft piano music)
01:13:25.620 | (soft piano music)
01:13:38.820 | (soft piano music)
01:13:41.740 | (soft piano music)
01:13:55.740 | (soft piano music)
01:14:07.020 | (soft piano music)
01:14:09.940 | (soft piano music)
01:14:23.820 | (soft piano music)
01:14:36.660 | (soft piano music)
01:14:39.580 | (soft piano music)
01:14:52.020 | (soft piano music)
01:14:54.940 | (soft piano music)
01:15:10.700 | (soft piano music)
01:15:13.620 | (soft piano music)
01:15:31.740 | (soft piano music)
01:15:34.660 | (soft piano music)
01:15:52.500 | (soft piano music)
01:15:55.420 | (soft piano music)
01:16:10.380 | (soft piano music)
01:16:13.300 | (soft piano music)
01:16:31.180 | (soft piano music)
01:16:34.100 | (soft piano music)
01:16:50.860 | (soft piano music)
01:16:53.780 | (soft piano music)
01:17:11.660 | (soft piano music)
01:17:14.580 | (soft piano music)
01:17:28.460 | (soft piano music)
01:17:31.380 | (soft piano music)
01:17:51.260 | (soft piano music)
01:17:54.180 | (soft piano music)
01:18:06.180 | (soft piano music)
01:18:20.060 | (soft piano music)
01:18:22.980 | (soft piano music)
01:18:38.980 | (soft piano music)
01:18:49.860 | (soft piano music)
01:18:52.780 | (soft piano music)
01:19:03.780 | (soft piano music)
01:19:13.660 | (soft piano music)
01:19:16.580 | (soft piano music)
01:19:36.460 | (soft piano music)
01:19:39.380 | (soft piano music)
01:19:52.380 | (soft piano music)
01:20:04.260 | (soft piano music)
01:20:07.180 | (soft piano music)
01:20:18.180 | (soft piano music)
01:20:34.060 | (soft piano music)
01:20:36.980 | (soft piano music)
01:20:54.860 | (soft piano music)
01:20:57.780 | (soft piano music)
01:21:09.780 | (soft piano music)
01:21:22.660 | (soft piano music)
01:21:25.580 | (soft piano music)
01:21:51.660 | (soft piano music)
01:21:54.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:16.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:19.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:29.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:41.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:44.660 | (soft piano music)
01:22:53.660 | (soft piano music)
01:23:04.660 | (soft piano music)
01:23:07.660 | (soft piano music)
01:23:17.660 | (soft piano music)
01:23:29.660 | (soft piano music)
01:23:32.660 | - Okay, if I can have your attention.
01:23:45.660 | If I can get you guys to be in groups of three people,
01:23:48.660 | and there's three specific prayer I'm going to be dividing,
01:23:53.660 | and to just to pray for those topics,
01:23:56.660 | and afterwards if our praise team can come up
01:23:58.660 | and they'll wrap us up for tonight,
01:24:00.660 | and those three topics is one,
01:24:02.660 | tomorrow there's an outreach volleyball
01:24:04.660 | that's being sponsored by our outreach team,
01:24:08.660 | and I heard that there's over 20 non-Christians
01:24:11.660 | that are being brought to the park,
01:24:13.660 | and so last time when they did this,
01:24:15.660 | they had a lot of great conversations
01:24:17.660 | and a lot of interest.
01:24:20.660 | There's a lot of stirring of interest
01:24:22.660 | for the things of God,
01:24:24.660 | and so if you can pray for them, pray for our outreach team,
01:24:27.660 | pray for the people who are coming,
01:24:29.660 | pray for the people who are there
01:24:31.660 | to be able to share the gospel with them,
01:24:33.660 | that we'll have very deep conversations with them
01:24:35.660 | about Christ and that these conversations
01:24:37.660 | would lead them to Christ.
01:24:39.660 | So if you can pray for the team,
01:24:41.660 | pray for the people who are coming, number one.
01:24:43.660 | Number two, pray for our Taiwan missions.
01:24:46.660 | Our Taiwan mission team is having our first meeting
01:24:49.660 | in a few weeks to prepare for,
01:24:51.660 | to connect with the church out in Taiwan.
01:24:55.660 | So Pastor Alex and Jen are leading the church over there,
01:25:00.660 | so if you can pray for the team, pray for the work,
01:25:03.660 | that the Lord would open the door
01:25:05.660 | so that we can come alongside what they're doing
01:25:08.660 | and to be able to support their ministry.
01:25:10.660 | And so if you can pray for the team,
01:25:12.660 | pray for the work that we're going to be starting
01:25:14.660 | over there in Taiwan.
01:25:16.660 | And then three, pray for our pastors who are out in India.
01:25:19.660 | As I've mentioned, every letter I get now
01:25:22.660 | is some sort of information
01:25:27.660 | about how they've been attacked,
01:25:29.660 | how they're actively doing work,
01:25:31.660 | but they're being attacked wherever they go.
01:25:33.660 | So it's a common thing now.
01:25:35.660 | I mean, this happened before, but now it's happening
01:25:37.660 | every time I receive a letter.
01:25:39.660 | So if you guys can keep them in prayer.
01:25:41.660 | We are planning to go.
01:25:43.660 | A small team of us are still planning to go in January.
01:25:45.660 | So if you can pray for our Indian pastors
01:25:48.660 | and for the work that they're doing.
01:25:50.660 | So if you can get together with a group of three
01:25:52.660 | and just designate who's going to pray for what,
01:25:54.660 | and then once you're done,
01:25:56.660 | again, if a praise team can just come up
01:25:58.660 | and they're going to wrap us up in the worship,
01:26:00.660 | and then I'll pray for us, and then we'll end the meeting.
01:26:03.660 | So just grab three people around you.
01:26:09.660 | [indistinct chatter]
01:26:13.660 | [indistinct chatter]
01:26:16.660 | [indistinct chatter]
01:26:19.660 | [indistinct chatter]
01:26:22.660 | (audience chattering)
01:26:25.820 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:29.900 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:34.820 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:38.980 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:43.060 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:47.140 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:51.220 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:55.300 | (audience chattering continues)
01:26:59.380 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:03.460 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:07.540 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:11.620 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:15.700 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:19.700 | (audience chattering continues)
01:27:23.700 | (audience chattering continues)
