00:38:18.080 | Starting from verse 12, it reads,
00:38:20.080 | "It was at this time he went off to the mountain to pray,
00:38:23.080 | and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.
00:38:26.080 | And when the day came, he called his disciples to him
00:38:28.080 | and chose 12 of them, whom he also named as apostles--
00:38:32.080 | Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother,
00:38:35.080 | and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
00:38:37.080 | Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Aphaias,
00:38:40.080 | and Simon, who was called the Zealot,
00:38:43.080 | Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot,
00:38:46.080 | who became a traitor."
00:38:48.080 | Let's pray.
00:38:52.080 | Father, help us to understand your Word.
00:38:56.080 | Help us not to add or to take away from it.
00:39:01.080 | I pray that you would shine your light through the Word
00:39:05.080 | of our own hearts.
00:39:07.080 | Help us to learn, glean, and apply the things that you teach.
00:39:12.080 | May your name be honored, glorified, and exalted.
00:39:15.080 | In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
00:39:20.080 | Now, if you watch YouTube or--
00:39:22.080 | I don't know where you get your videos,
00:39:24.080 | but one of the things that always kind of pops up
00:39:27.080 | every once in a while are videos of people
00:39:30.080 | who lost tremendous amount of weight.
00:39:33.080 | They were 300 pounds or something,
00:39:35.080 | and they lost 100 pounds, and you see a big,
00:39:37.080 | significant difference, and the video kind of chronicles
00:39:40.080 | how they were able to overcome various things
00:39:43.080 | to be able to do that.
00:39:45.080 | Or the other way, where you have somebody who's very skinny,
00:39:48.080 | and then he works out, and about a year later,
00:39:50.080 | you just see the completely transformed man.
00:39:52.080 | And obviously, those videos are always popular
00:39:54.080 | because it's inspiring to see people kind of dedicate themselves
00:39:58.080 | and see the radical transformation physically.
00:40:02.080 | But what is even greater than the physical transformation
00:40:07.080 | is when we see people completely change internally.
00:40:12.080 | As challenging, as inspiring it is to see people
00:40:15.080 | transform their outer body,
00:40:18.080 | it is much more difficult to see somebody
00:40:21.080 | who gets transformed internally.
00:40:23.080 | In fact, in Jeremiah 13:23, it says,
00:40:26.080 | "Can an Ethiopian change his skin?
00:40:29.080 | Can a leper change his spot?"
00:40:32.080 | And basically compares it to a sinner
00:40:35.080 | who is in the practice of sinning to just simply stop sinning.
00:40:39.080 | He said, "It just doesn't happen."
00:40:42.080 | And if one thing after living all these years,
00:40:44.080 | one thing I can testify, and I think you will agree with me,
00:40:48.080 | people just do not change.
00:40:51.080 | You just have a different version of ourselves when we're young,
00:40:55.080 | and then the way we carry it out, whether you're good or bad,
00:40:58.080 | you meet them 20, 30 years later,
00:41:00.080 | rarely you see a completely different person.
00:41:04.080 | Every once in a while, you'll meet somebody
00:41:06.080 | that you haven't seen for a while,
00:41:07.080 | and you can't even recognize who they are.
00:41:09.080 | I'm not just talking about physically.
00:41:11.080 | Just internally, something happened to them.
00:41:13.080 | Either they become so dark, something happened to them.
00:41:17.080 | They went through maybe a very painful divorce or bankruptcy,
00:41:22.080 | or something happened to them,
00:41:23.080 | lost somebody that was very significant to them,
00:41:26.080 | and there's a darkness that comes over them,
00:41:28.080 | and you can see something has happened.
00:41:29.080 | Or the opposite, there's somebody who's become so bright,
00:41:34.080 | and there's something completely different about them.
00:41:36.080 | And usually the question that we ask is, "What happened?
00:41:39.080 | What happened?"
00:41:40.080 | Because we know that as difficult as it is
00:41:43.080 | to transform our physical body,
00:41:46.080 | when you see somebody who's completely transformed
00:41:48.080 | a different person,
00:41:49.080 | we know something significant happened to that person.
00:41:52.080 | That's the question that we ask.
00:41:54.080 | Well, in the scriptures, among the disciples,
00:41:58.080 | I think everybody, all the disciples,
00:42:01.080 | went through radical transformation,
00:42:02.080 | but James and John are probably the most obvious.
00:42:07.080 | James and John, these two disciples,
00:42:09.080 | these two of the inner three,
00:42:11.080 | they were known to be passionate.
00:42:14.080 | And passion could be a good thing or a bad thing, right?
00:42:17.080 | It could be a passion.
00:42:18.080 | Somebody who's very passionate
00:42:19.080 | could mean that he's very zealous for the right thing,
00:42:23.080 | but it could also mean he has a bad temper, right?
00:42:26.080 | In this situation, it was not necessarily,
00:42:29.080 | at least the way it was being expressed
00:42:30.080 | and how it's revealed to us,
00:42:32.080 | is not necessarily positive.
00:42:33.080 | In Mark 3, 16-17, he appointed the twelve, Simon,
00:42:38.080 | to whom he gave the name Peter,
00:42:40.080 | and James and the son of Zebedee,
00:42:41.080 | and John, the brother of James,
00:42:42.080 | to them he gave the name Bonergus,
00:42:45.080 | which means sons of thunder.
00:42:49.080 | Now, their name, sons of thunder,
00:42:51.080 | was not necessarily a positive, right?
00:42:54.080 | It wasn't a prophetic word,
00:42:56.080 | like you're going to be the sons of thunder,
00:42:58.080 | kind of like when he saw Simon,
00:42:59.080 | he said your name is going to be Peter
00:43:01.080 | because you're going to be the rock.
00:43:02.080 | Or when Abram changes his name to Abraham,
00:43:05.080 | that he's going to be a God,
00:43:07.080 | he's going to be a father of multitude.
00:43:10.080 | In this situation, it's just a description, right?
00:43:14.080 | When you say Air Jordan, right?
00:43:17.080 | Those guys from that generation,
00:43:19.080 | Air Jordan basically means,
00:43:20.080 | it was just a description of who he was
00:43:22.080 | because he would get up in the air.
00:43:24.080 | And so even his logo is him just flying up in the air,
00:43:27.080 | so that was a description of who he is.
00:43:29.080 | Or Magic Johnson, I know a little bit outdated, right?
00:43:32.080 | Magic Johnson because when he was bringing down the ball,
00:43:35.080 | you didn't know where the ball was going to go, right?
00:43:37.080 | It was almost like he's creating magic,
00:43:39.080 | and back then you had cameras that would follow him,
00:43:42.080 | and oftentimes the camera would turn right
00:43:44.080 | and then the ball would go left,
00:43:45.080 | so they have to switch the camera to get him.
00:43:47.080 | And so that's how he got the nickname Magic Johnson.
00:43:50.080 | And it was just a description,
00:43:52.080 | an observation of who they are.
00:43:55.080 | The sons of thunder was not necessarily a compliment
00:43:59.080 | because he saw certain characters of these two brothers.
00:44:04.080 | In Luke chapter 9, 46,
00:44:06.080 | and this was a common thing,
00:44:08.080 | and I think it grew as Jesus was headed to the cross,
00:44:11.080 | there was an argument that kept on breaking out
00:44:13.080 | among the disciples, like, "Who's the greatest?"
00:44:16.080 | And Jesus, recognizing that,
00:44:18.080 | he rebukes them and saying,
00:44:20.080 | "Unless you have a faith of a child,"
00:44:22.080 | meaning these innocent children that don't have authority,
00:44:25.080 | don't have power, don't have money,
00:44:27.080 | "if you don't humble yourselves like these little children,
00:44:30.080 | "you will not be able to enter the kingdom of heaven."
00:44:34.080 | It is in that context, in verse 49,
00:44:36.080 | it tells us John saw some people
00:44:40.080 | who were going out performing miracles,
00:44:42.080 | casting out demons, and it bothered him.
00:44:44.080 | And he says, "Master, we saw someone
00:44:46.080 | "casting out demons in your name,
00:44:48.080 | "and we tried to prevent him
00:44:49.080 | "because he does not follow along with us."
00:44:52.080 | But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him,
00:44:54.080 | "for he who is not against you is for you."
00:44:57.080 | Now, those words in and of itself may seem innocent,
00:45:02.080 | but when you see it in the context
00:45:04.080 | of what was going on before that,
00:45:07.080 | that they were arguing with one another,
00:45:08.080 | "Who's the greatest?"
00:45:10.080 | And Jesus rebuking them.
00:45:12.080 | So when John says this,
00:45:14.080 | it wasn't simply because he was concerned,
00:45:16.080 | like, "Do they have the authority?
00:45:17.080 | "Do they have the right?"
00:45:19.080 | They were the ones who were the apostles.
00:45:21.080 | They were the one who was chosen.
00:45:23.080 | And these guys are doing the same thing,
00:45:25.080 | and people are honoring them, too.
00:45:28.080 | So within the context, this was not an innocent question
00:45:32.080 | because they're arguing with each other,
00:45:33.080 | "Who's the greatest?"
00:45:34.080 | And these guys are doing the same thing.
00:45:35.080 | Should I stop them?
00:45:36.080 | So Jesus rebukes them,
00:45:37.080 | and says, "He who is not against us is for us."
00:45:40.080 | So it kind of reveals to us what's going on with John.
00:45:43.080 | But what's really revealing
00:45:44.080 | and what caused Jesus to give them this question
00:45:47.080 | is stated in verse 51 through 56.
00:45:50.080 | Right after that text, it says,
00:45:51.080 | "When the days were approaching for his ascension,
00:45:54.080 | "he was determined to go to Jerusalem,"
00:45:56.080 | referring to Jesus,
00:45:57.080 | "and he sent messengers on ahead of him,
00:45:59.080 | "and they went and entered the village of the Samaritans
00:46:02.080 | "to make arrangements for him."
00:46:04.080 | So when we get to this text,
00:46:06.080 | I'm going to go a bit more detail
00:46:08.080 | about the historical background
00:46:10.080 | of why the Samaritans and the Jews
00:46:11.080 | hated each other so much.
00:46:13.080 | But just so that you can understand what's going on,
00:46:16.080 | when the Assyrians came and they conquered the Jews,
00:46:20.080 | they took all the men and women,
00:46:22.080 | and they took them into Assyria.
00:46:24.080 | And there was a small remnant of people
00:46:26.080 | that remained in Jerusalem.
00:46:29.080 | And in order to gain control of that area,
00:46:32.080 | the Assyrians sent a lot of their people
00:46:35.080 | to populate that area.
00:46:37.080 | So what happened was the Jews who remained in the area
00:46:40.080 | and the Assyrians who started to come
00:46:42.080 | started to integrate and intermarry.
00:46:45.080 | And as they were intermarrying,
00:46:47.080 | the Samaritans began to create
00:46:51.080 | their own version of Judaism.
00:46:53.080 | They had their own sacrifice.
00:46:54.080 | They had their own system
00:46:56.080 | so that they didn't have to go to where the Jews were.
00:47:00.080 | And so the Jews always looked at them as compromisers.
00:47:03.080 | In fact, they had this hatred toward one another
00:47:06.080 | that when King Cyrus gives the leaders of Israel
00:47:10.080 | to come back and reestablish the temple,
00:47:13.080 | the Samaritans ended up wanting to,
00:47:15.080 | "Hey, we're going to rebuild together."
00:47:16.080 | And they said, "No, you guys are not true Jews.
00:47:18.080 | "You haven't been faithful,
00:47:19.080 | "so we cannot allow you to participate."
00:47:21.080 | So they ended up becoming more enemies.
00:47:23.080 | They ended up, the Samaritans actually come
00:47:25.080 | and fight against the building of the temple.
00:47:28.080 | So ever since then,
00:47:29.080 | they had this hatred toward one another.
00:47:31.080 | This hatred was so intense
00:47:33.080 | that when an average Jew would travel between Galilee
00:47:37.080 | and Jerusalem would be here,
00:47:38.080 | and Samaria would be somewhere in the middle,
00:47:41.080 | they would go an extra day around Samaria
00:47:43.080 | so they don't have to step foot in Samaria.
00:47:45.080 | That's how much they hated each other.
00:47:48.080 | Well, this scene happens
00:47:49.080 | when Jesus is coming down to Jerusalem
00:47:51.080 | to prepare for a festival, him and his disciples,
00:47:54.080 | and they're just trying to settle in somewhere
00:47:56.080 | and get a place so that they can settle in and prepare.
00:47:59.080 | But when the Samaritans realized
00:48:01.080 | that they were going to Jerusalem,
00:48:03.080 | they prevented them, saying, "They can't come."
00:48:05.080 | So that's the context in which this takes place.
00:48:09.080 | So clearly, Jesus is in the right.
00:48:13.080 | The disciples are in the right
00:48:15.080 | because this is the Messiah, this is the King.
00:48:17.080 | The Samaritans are the ones who compromised.
00:48:20.080 | The Samaritans are the one, in this context,
00:48:23.080 | who is preventing the Messiah, their King,
00:48:27.080 | to go to Jerusalem.
00:48:28.080 | So there is a clear right and wrong.
00:48:31.080 | But the way that John and James responded
00:48:35.080 | is very revealing to us in verse 53.
00:48:38.080 | "But they did not receive him
00:48:39.080 | because he was traveling toward Jerusalem.
00:48:41.080 | And when his disciples, James and John, saw this,
00:48:43.080 | they said, 'Lord, do you want us to command fire
00:48:46.080 | to come down from heaven and consume them?'"
00:48:50.080 | Now, first of all, it almost sounded like
00:48:53.080 | they've done this before.
00:48:55.080 | He didn't say, "Oh, can you give me the power?
00:48:57.080 | Would you do this?"
00:48:58.080 | It almost sounded like they had some sort of power.
00:49:01.080 | So I don't know if they had the authority
00:49:03.080 | or the power to do this,
00:49:04.080 | but the way that they're asking was,
00:49:06.080 | "Do you want us to just get rid of these people?"
00:49:10.080 | "But he turned, Jesus turned, and rebuked them and said,
00:49:13.080 | 'You do not know what kind of spirit you are of.
00:49:16.080 | For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives,
00:49:19.080 | but to save them, and they went on to another village.'"
00:49:23.080 | So you can see why James and John
00:49:25.080 | was giving this title "The Sons of Thunder."
00:49:28.080 | Literally, if they were left the way they were,
00:49:34.080 | they would have become mass murderers.
00:49:37.080 | And that's not an exaggeration
00:49:38.080 | because that's exactly what they were saying,
00:49:40.080 | what he was saying.
00:49:41.080 | Because we're in the right, and they're in the wrong.
00:49:44.080 | "Should judgment come now?
00:49:46.080 | Give me the permission.
00:49:47.080 | Let me bring the thunder down."
00:49:51.080 | But it's very telling what Jesus says.
00:49:54.080 | Yes, they are in the wrong.
00:49:57.080 | This is the king of kings and lord of lords.
00:50:01.080 | They are in the wrong,
00:50:02.080 | but the way he rebukes them, he says,
00:50:05.080 | "You do not know the spirit,
00:50:08.080 | what kind of spirit you are of."
00:50:12.080 | When he says, "You do not know the spirit
00:50:13.080 | of what kind of spirit you are of,"
00:50:15.080 | he's basically telling them, "You do not know me.
00:50:18.080 | You know about what is right.
00:50:20.080 | You know about the law.
00:50:21.080 | You know what is wrong,
00:50:23.080 | but you do not know me.
00:50:25.080 | The Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives,
00:50:29.080 | but to save them."
00:50:32.080 | See, if we're not careful,
00:50:35.080 | sometimes the most dangerous people
00:50:37.080 | are people who are on a mission
00:50:41.080 | to do what's right,
00:50:42.080 | to point out what's wrong,
00:50:45.080 | and to destroy.
00:50:47.080 | I mean, think about the last 2,000 years
00:50:49.080 | of church history,
00:50:51.080 | how much destruction came from men
00:50:53.080 | who thought they were representing God.
00:50:57.080 | Think about the Crusades,
00:50:59.080 | how they were in a fight
00:51:00.080 | to reconquer the promised land.
00:51:02.080 | They went there and they slaughtered,
00:51:04.080 | burned down villages of the Muslims
00:51:06.080 | because they were in the right,
00:51:08.080 | because they're Christian,
00:51:09.080 | and their faith is the true faith,
00:51:11.080 | so they went and slaughtered them.
00:51:12.080 | So to this day,
00:51:14.080 | that's a stain on the church,
00:51:17.080 | but at that time,
00:51:18.080 | they did this under the flag of the cross.
00:51:22.080 | You think about the Inquisition,
00:51:25.080 | how the church implemented anybody
00:51:27.080 | who was going to teach something wrong,
00:51:29.080 | and they would torture them
00:51:31.080 | in the name of Jesus for righteousness.
00:51:35.080 | Remember the Salem witch hunts
00:51:37.080 | in the name of purity to catch demons.
00:51:41.080 | In fact, the Holocaust itself,
00:51:44.080 | if you study the genesis of the Holocaust,
00:51:48.080 | the Nazis used the Bible
00:51:50.080 | to say how they crucified our Messiah,
00:51:54.080 | and that they were the parasites,
00:51:56.080 | and all the problems in our society
00:51:58.080 | is because we have too many Jews,
00:51:59.080 | and we need to have a pure race,
00:52:01.080 | and in the genesis of it,
00:52:03.080 | they used the Bible.
00:52:05.080 | They used righteousness.
00:52:08.080 | So much destruction,
00:52:11.080 | so many church divides happen.
00:52:14.080 | When we know the law,
00:52:16.080 | what is right, what is wrong,
00:52:18.080 | but do not understand the spirit
00:52:21.080 | of our Savior.
00:52:24.080 | He rebukes them because they did not know.
00:52:27.080 | If Jesus just kind of left them as they were,
00:52:29.080 | that's exactly what they probably
00:52:31.080 | would have gone and do.
00:52:32.080 | All the authority and power
00:52:34.080 | that was given to the apostles,
00:52:35.080 | instead of bringing people to Christ,
00:52:37.080 | he would have crushed them
00:52:39.080 | because that's exactly what they did.
00:52:42.080 | Not only were they passionate,
00:52:46.080 | in the wrong way,
00:52:49.080 | they were both very ambitious people.
00:52:52.080 | You know the scripture constantly tells us
00:52:54.080 | that there was a constant argument
00:52:56.080 | among the disciples,
00:52:57.080 | who's the greatest?
00:52:59.080 | It doesn't tell us who they were specifically.
00:53:01.080 | My guess is, I mean here it tells us,
00:53:03.080 | James and John for sure was in that group.
00:53:06.080 | My guess is Peter and Andrew.
00:53:09.080 | Maybe Andrew kind of took himself out of that.
00:53:11.080 | I don't know what happened to him.
00:53:13.080 | But my guess is that the conflict
00:53:15.080 | and the competition was primarily
00:53:17.080 | coming between those three.
00:53:20.080 | And James and Andrew just kind of
00:53:22.080 | maybe took himself out of that
00:53:23.080 | because he wasn't part of the inner three.
00:53:25.080 | And because the three of them were chosen
00:53:28.080 | for special privilege.
00:53:31.080 | They were the ones who were given
00:53:33.080 | the access to the transfiguration.
00:53:36.080 | They were the ones where Jesus revealed to them
00:53:38.080 | when he was healing
00:53:40.080 | the synagogue daughter's illness.
00:53:43.080 | They were the ones when he was at the Garden of Gethsemane,
00:53:46.080 | where he left the other disciples behind
00:53:47.080 | and the three of them come.
00:53:49.080 | In fact, in the list in Mark chapter 3, 16-17,
00:53:53.080 | it lists Peter, James and John, and then Andrew.
00:53:57.080 | In Luke's account, it says Peter, Andrew, James and John.
00:54:01.080 | So it's clearly, it's evident
00:54:04.080 | that people understood
00:54:06.080 | that the three of them were the pillars.
00:54:09.080 | And in the three,
00:54:11.080 | in the three, the two of them are brothers.
00:54:13.080 | So my guess is
00:54:15.080 | these two brothers were kind of jockeying
00:54:18.080 | to compete with Peter, right?
00:54:20.080 | Because Peter seems like he has some in with Jesus.
00:54:23.080 | Maybe he's the older guy.
00:54:25.080 | Maybe he has a certain kind of personality.
00:54:27.080 | But whatever it is,
00:54:29.080 | he's like, "We need to sit on the left and to the right."
00:54:31.080 | So I think the argument was happening between them.
00:54:34.080 | In fact, when they're described to us,
00:54:37.080 | it doesn't just say James and John here.
00:54:39.080 | It says they're sons of Zebedee.
00:54:41.080 | So some of you guys may remember,
00:54:43.080 | Zebedee is their father.
00:54:45.080 | And when Jesus first calls them,
00:54:47.080 | they were fishing in their father's boat, Zebedee.
00:54:49.080 | And they believe that the reason why his name is mentioned
00:54:52.080 | is because Zebedee is a very prominent businessman,
00:54:55.080 | very successful businessman.
00:54:57.080 | And as a result of that,
00:54:59.080 | he probably had connections and access
00:55:01.080 | that other people didn't have.
00:55:03.080 | So they're his children.
00:55:05.080 | That's why his name is mentioned, right?
00:55:07.080 | Peter was also successful,
00:55:09.080 | but I don't know if he came from a prominent family.
00:55:11.080 | James and John did.
00:55:13.080 | So in their worldly thinking,
00:55:15.080 | they thought, "Well, when Jesus gets on his throne,
00:55:18.080 | we have a leg up on Peter."
00:55:22.080 | And so this discussion is going on.
00:55:26.080 | And in Mark 10, 33-41,
00:55:32.080 | it reveals to us
00:55:34.080 | what exactly was happening within them
00:55:36.080 | and why this needed to be addressed.
00:55:38.080 | In Mark 10, 33-41,
00:55:40.080 | Jesus again tells them about his suffering.
00:55:44.080 | In verse 33,
00:55:46.080 | "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man
00:55:48.080 | will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes,
00:55:51.080 | and they will condemn him to death
00:55:53.080 | and will hand him over to the Gentiles.
00:55:55.080 | They will mock him and spit on him and scourge him and kill him.
00:55:58.080 | And then three days later, he will rise again."
00:56:01.080 | Now imagine if you were the disciples
00:56:05.080 | and you left everything to follow Jesus,
00:56:07.080 | and then Jesus is headed toward Jerusalem,
00:56:10.080 | and he tells the disciples repeatedly,
00:56:13.080 | "I'm going to get captured.
00:56:15.080 | They're going to torture me.
00:56:17.080 | Then I'm going to die.
00:56:19.080 | And I'm going to rise on the third day."
00:56:21.080 | You say, "What? What did he say?
00:56:24.080 | That doesn't make any sense.
00:56:26.080 | He's the king.
00:56:28.080 | We've seen him walk on waters.
00:56:30.080 | He completely stopped a storm.
00:56:33.080 | I mean, we've seen him do some incredible stuff.
00:56:37.080 | He raised people from the dead.
00:56:41.080 | He's going to get captured and killed?"
00:56:45.080 | And then he said he was going to rise on the third day,
00:56:48.080 | and it's almost kind of like they never heard him
00:56:50.080 | because after Jesus dies,
00:56:52.080 | they don't even go check.
00:56:54.080 | In fact, the women go check,
00:56:56.080 | and they come back and say, "We saw him."
00:56:58.080 | Remember their response?
00:56:59.080 | "Get out of here."
00:57:00.080 | All right, that's the modern-day version.
00:57:02.080 | That's basically what they said.
00:57:04.080 | "Get out of here.
00:57:05.080 | Nobody comes back from the dead."
00:57:08.080 | And they said, "Until we see him,
00:57:10.080 | we're not going to believe you."
00:57:11.080 | That's how dense they were.
00:57:13.080 | Jesus made it very clear.
00:57:17.080 | Not only did they not understand,
00:57:19.080 | not only did they not respond.
00:57:21.080 | Look what they say, verse 35.
00:57:23.080 | This is right after Jesus said,
00:57:24.080 | "I'm going to be beaten, killed, and then resurrected."
00:57:27.080 | And then verse 35,
00:57:28.080 | "James and John, the two sons of Zebedee,
00:57:29.080 | came up to Jesus saying,
00:57:30.080 | 'Teacher, we want you to do for us
00:57:32.080 | whatever we ask you.'"
00:57:35.080 | That's just like a father saying,
00:57:38.080 | "Hey, let's have a family meeting.
00:57:39.080 | We'll gather together."
00:57:40.080 | Just came back from the hospital
00:57:41.080 | and found out that I have terminal cancer.
00:57:43.080 | I have three days to live.
00:57:46.080 | And then the son says,
00:57:48.080 | "Are you still going to give me that car?"
00:57:51.080 | My 21st birthday is coming up
00:57:52.080 | and you said you're going to give me that car.
00:57:54.080 | Can you give me the red one?
00:57:57.080 | Can you imagine?
00:57:58.080 | I mean, Jesus is God,
00:58:01.080 | but he's also 100% human,
00:58:03.080 | and his response also must be human.
00:58:06.080 | If I heard that, I would have just smacked him
00:58:09.080 | and then explained to him why I smacked him.
00:58:12.080 | Did you hear what I just said?
00:58:15.080 | Can you imagine the temptation
00:58:16.080 | that Jesus must have had to start over?
00:58:21.080 | You know what I mean?
00:58:22.080 | Get rid of these guys and start over.
00:58:24.080 | Maybe my choice wasn't good, right?
00:58:27.080 | Peter is like filled with pride.
00:58:31.080 | James and John are like competing with one another.
00:58:34.080 | Who's going to be the greatest?
00:58:37.080 | What is going on?
00:58:39.080 | They completely ignore.
00:58:40.080 | I mean, they were so fixated on
00:58:42.080 | who's going to be the greatest,
00:58:43.080 | who's going to be the greatest,
00:58:44.080 | even after Jesus says, "I'm going to die,"
00:58:47.080 | they don't get it.
00:58:51.080 | And Jesus calmly asked them,
00:58:53.080 | "What do you want me to do for you?"
00:58:55.080 | Can you imagine the restraint in those words?
00:58:58.080 | Right?
00:58:59.080 | You just said, "I'm going to die.
00:59:00.080 | I'm going to get beaten. I'm going to die."
00:59:01.080 | And then they said, "Oh, can you give me the car?"
00:59:03.080 | Okay, what is it that you want?
00:59:08.080 | I mean, he's so patient.
00:59:09.080 | I mean, I think about the restraint for him
00:59:12.080 | not to lash out at them.
00:59:15.080 | They said to him, "Grant that we may sit
00:59:18.080 | one on your right and one on your left
00:59:20.080 | in your glory."
00:59:22.080 | You notice here Peter is not mentioned here.
00:59:25.080 | Right? There's the inner three.
00:59:27.080 | And these brothers come.
00:59:28.080 | In fact, this was not an impromptu response.
00:59:32.080 | This was in Matthew 20, 20.
00:59:34.080 | Their mom, Salome, came.
00:59:36.080 | They recruited their mom to speak on their behalf.
00:59:38.080 | And Salome was one of the mothers
00:59:41.080 | who followed along Jesus' ministry,
00:59:43.080 | cooking for them, caring for them.
00:59:46.080 | So they're recruiting their mom and saying,
00:59:48.080 | "Hey, Mom, you know, Peter seems like
00:59:51.080 | he has some sort of in with Jesus,
00:59:53.080 | but we have you.
00:59:54.080 | Can you go talk to Jesus?"
00:59:57.080 | Anybody who's been in ministry for a while,
00:59:59.080 | we've all experienced that.
01:00:01.080 | We've had so many moms in the past.
01:00:03.080 | I mean, not--you guys are too old for that,
01:00:05.080 | but when I was a youth pastor,
01:00:07.080 | I would have moms come in and say,
01:00:09.080 | "Hey, can you have my daughter or son
01:00:12.080 | be in the praise team?"
01:00:14.080 | And it's like, "Oh, who's your daughter?"
01:00:16.080 | "Oh, he doesn't come to church yet."
01:00:18.080 | But if you give him that, he'll come.
01:00:21.080 | Right?
01:00:22.080 | And so, "Let me think about that."
01:00:24.080 | I don't know how many times I've had--
01:00:26.080 | and usually it's the mom.
01:00:28.080 | Dads, for whatever reason, don't come.
01:00:30.080 | It's the mom who comes and says,
01:00:32.080 | "Oh, if you just give a position.
01:00:34.080 | If you let my daughter--
01:00:35.080 | she's so good at being an older sister,
01:00:38.080 | an older brother.
01:00:39.080 | If you just give them and let them kind of lead
01:00:41.080 | and opportunity to teach, they'll come."
01:00:43.080 | It's like, "Are they Christian?"
01:00:44.080 | "Not yet, but if you let them--
01:00:46.080 | give them an opportunity."
01:00:48.080 | You know what I mean?
01:00:49.080 | Just give them one chance.
01:00:51.080 | Well, this is planned out,
01:00:53.080 | and I don't know why they thought
01:00:54.080 | that this was the best time after Jesus said,
01:00:56.080 | "I'm going to die."
01:00:57.080 | And it's like, "Yeah, this is the time right now."
01:00:59.080 | He's vulnerable.
01:01:00.080 | He's not thinking straight.
01:01:02.080 | Right?
01:01:03.080 | But for whatever reason, they come and they ask.
01:01:06.080 | And as a result of that, in verse 41,
01:01:08.080 | "So hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant
01:01:11.080 | with James and John."
01:01:13.080 | Right?
01:01:14.080 | And I'm pretty sure Peter was probably the angriest.
01:01:17.080 | And maybe when Peter said later,
01:01:19.080 | "You're going to deny me three times."
01:01:21.080 | "They will all deny you but me."
01:01:23.080 | He was probably pointing at James and John.
01:01:25.080 | That's my thinking.
01:01:27.080 | Because he's already angered with these guys.
01:01:29.080 | These guys are talking about being left up to the right.
01:01:31.080 | "I'm going to die for you."
01:01:32.080 | Not like those guys.
01:01:34.080 | You can see the tension that's being built up
01:01:37.080 | because of this.
01:01:39.080 | And then verse 38, Jesus says,
01:01:41.080 | "You do not know what you are asking."
01:01:44.080 | Meaning, what you think of glory
01:01:48.080 | is not what glory is going to look like.
01:01:52.080 | "You do not know what you are asking."
01:01:54.080 | "Are you able to drink the cup that I drink
01:01:56.080 | or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
01:02:03.080 | And the arrogance of their response,
01:02:06.080 | just simply because they did not know.
01:02:08.080 | They said to him, "We are able."
01:02:14.080 | "We are able."
01:02:16.080 | They had no understanding where Jesus was going.
01:02:18.080 | Even though he told them, "I'm going."
01:02:21.080 | When Jesus said he was going to the glory,
01:02:23.080 | what was he referring to?
01:02:26.080 | The cross.
01:02:27.080 | In John 17, verse 1,
01:02:29.080 | Jesus spoke to these things and lifting up his eyes to heaven,
01:02:31.080 | he said, "Father, the hour has come.
01:02:33.080 | Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you."
01:02:37.080 | What is he referring to?
01:02:38.080 | The cross.
01:02:41.080 | He said, "I'm going to go give my life,
01:02:43.080 | be crucified, bear the sins of the world.
01:02:46.080 | It is now time to glorify me."
01:02:50.080 | Not on the throne.
01:02:51.080 | Not what the angels sing in his praises,
01:02:53.080 | but at the cross.
01:02:56.080 | And it is at the cross, in his suffering,
01:02:59.080 | he was going to glorify the Father.
01:03:02.080 | But that's not what they were thinking.
01:03:05.080 | What they were thinking is sitting on the left and to the right
01:03:07.080 | when he's on the throne and everybody's coming to him,
01:03:09.080 | honoring him and all the riches and blessing
01:03:12.080 | that comes with the King of kings and Lord of lords.
01:03:14.080 | That's what they were thinking.
01:03:16.080 | That if we follow Jesus, we're going to have some of this.
01:03:20.080 | And Jesus said, "You do not know what you are asking for.
01:03:24.080 | Are you able?"
01:03:26.080 | And they say, "We are able."
01:03:29.080 | Think about the people.
01:03:32.080 | We're not even talking about 2,000 years.
01:03:34.080 | Just in the recent generation, the last 50 years or 100 years,
01:03:37.080 | the people that have brought the most glory to God.
01:03:42.080 | And I'm not talking about mega church pastors.
01:03:44.080 | I'm not talking about people who've written books
01:03:46.080 | and living it up.
01:03:48.080 | And everywhere they go, they're treated like celebrities.
01:03:50.080 | I'm not talking about those people.
01:03:52.080 | I'm talking about people who gave their lives.
01:03:56.080 | Jim Elliot lived a short life.
01:03:59.080 | The reason why he is quoted universally among all denominations
01:04:04.080 | was not because of his cleverness.
01:04:06.080 | It's not because of many books.
01:04:08.080 | It's because he gave his life preaching the gospel.
01:04:11.080 | He died early.
01:04:13.080 | And so he lives in glory because he gave his life.
01:04:17.080 | Look at Hudson Taylor, a young man who took his family
01:04:21.080 | and went into the inner parts of China where there was no foreigners
01:04:25.080 | and lived a difficult life to bring the gospel.
01:04:28.080 | He lived in depression.
01:04:30.080 | He lived in difficulty physically, psychologically.
01:04:36.080 | To this day, we celebrate him.
01:04:38.080 | Not because he was so articulate,
01:04:40.080 | not because he said so many great things,
01:04:42.080 | but because he gave his life.
01:04:46.080 | We look at even people like Apostle Paul.
01:04:51.080 | When he described his life, he said,
01:04:54.080 | "You know, humanly speaking, if I wanted honor,
01:04:59.080 | he already had it. He's a Roman citizen.
01:05:02.080 | He's a Pharisee among Pharisees.
01:05:03.080 | As to the law, I was perfect, but all of that stuff became rubbish
01:05:06.080 | in light of knowing the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ."
01:05:11.080 | He says his claim to fame was his suffering.
01:05:15.080 | And he lists all these apostles telling me that I'm not an apostle.
01:05:19.080 | And he doesn't list all his credentials.
01:05:21.080 | He lists how much he suffered, how close he came to death
01:05:24.080 | over and over again.
01:05:26.080 | When he was commanding Epaphras,
01:05:28.080 | he doesn't say, "Epaphras comes from pedigree.
01:05:30.080 | Epaphras has a PhD.
01:05:32.080 | Epaphras planted so many churches."
01:05:34.080 | He says, "No, think how many times Epaphras came so close to death
01:05:39.080 | in order to bring the gospel to you."
01:05:42.080 | See, the glory that Jesus is referring to was leading to the cross.
01:05:47.080 | The glory that James and John was referring to is honor,
01:05:50.080 | just like the rest of the world,
01:05:53.080 | just like everybody else, except you're using the channel of the church.
01:05:59.080 | How much of the corruption in the church happens for this very reason?
01:06:05.080 | How much of divisions within the church happens for this very reason?
01:06:09.080 | Because we want recognition.
01:06:12.080 | We want people to understand and know and give us credit.
01:06:17.080 | And yet the glory that he's referring to is going to the cross.
01:06:21.080 | And Jesus said to them in verse 39,
01:06:23.080 | "The cup that I drink you shall drink, and you shall be baptized.
01:06:26.080 | And the baptism with which I am baptized," he says,
01:06:29.080 | "the suffering that he's referring to you will have
01:06:34.080 | because you're asking for it."
01:06:36.080 | And that's exactly what happens.
01:06:38.080 | James is the first to give his life for the gospel.
01:06:43.080 | And then John wasn't technically martyred, but he lived.
01:06:48.080 | He was the last one to die, but he probably wished that he died earlier.
01:06:54.080 | James is the only one that's mentioned in the book of Acts
01:06:57.080 | as the one who was martyred for the faith.
01:06:59.080 | He was the first one. He's the only one mentioned.
01:07:01.080 | Everybody else we know from church history.
01:07:04.080 | So we don't have a lot of information about James because he died early.
01:07:08.080 | He said, "You want glory? I'm going to the cross.
01:07:10.080 | Are you able to drink this cup of suffering?"
01:07:12.080 | He said, "I am." He said, "Okay."
01:07:14.080 | And so he dies.
01:07:16.080 | Some people may say, "Well, John, he didn't die. What happened to him?"
01:07:20.080 | John, they tried to kill him. They put him in boiling oil.
01:07:24.080 | And he didn't die to their surprise.
01:07:26.080 | So when he came out, people were afraid.
01:07:29.080 | Remember when Apostle Paul, when he was bitten at that island by a scorpion,
01:07:33.080 | and they said he must have done something for him to be--
01:07:36.080 | after surviving a shipwreck, and he's going to get bitten by a scorpion.
01:07:40.080 | But when he didn't die, remember what they said?
01:07:42.080 | There must be some kind of anointing upon him.
01:07:44.080 | He must be a god, and they started worshipping him.
01:07:47.080 | That's what happened to John.
01:07:48.080 | Because he didn't die, they thought there was some sort of anointing upon him,
01:07:52.080 | and they were afraid if they killed him that some curse was going to come upon them.
01:07:56.080 | So what ends up happening is they banish him to the island of Patmos
01:08:01.080 | where they sent political prisoners.
01:08:04.080 | Can you imagine the suffering that he went through to survive an oil burning?
01:08:10.080 | And it is while he was in this island he was writing the book of Revelation.
01:08:18.080 | Are you able to drink the cup of suffering?
01:08:21.080 | And they said, "I do. We are."
01:08:24.080 | They said, "Okay, you'll get this, but this be sitting on the left or to the right.
01:08:27.080 | That's for my father to give."
01:08:31.080 | We don't know a whole lot about John or about James,
01:08:34.080 | but we know quite a bit about John
01:08:37.080 | because John writes more than any other apostle outside from Luke and Paul.
01:08:42.080 | He writes the Gospel of John.
01:08:45.080 | He writes 1, 2, 3 John, and he writes the book of Revelation.
01:08:50.080 | If Jesus left them where they were at, the sons of thunder,
01:08:55.080 | in the name of righteousness, they would have just destroyed cities.
01:08:59.080 | They would have put everybody under judgment.
01:09:02.080 | They would have had the Word of God to stand behind.
01:09:05.080 | But that's not how his life ends.
01:09:08.080 | In his epistles, 45 times in his writing he mentions the word truth.
01:09:15.080 | But in those same epistles, the word love is mentioned 80 times.
01:09:21.080 | And so I think many of you guys already know that Apostle John,
01:09:25.080 | one of the sons of thunder, isn't known at the end as a son of thunder,
01:09:31.080 | a man who had a temper.
01:09:33.080 | He's known as what? The apostle of love.
01:09:36.080 | Of love.
01:09:39.080 | It's interesting because in 1 John 2, 15-16, you guys know this passage well.
01:09:44.080 | You probably memorized this if you ever memorized Scripture.
01:09:47.080 | "Do not love the world, nor the things in the world.
01:09:49.080 | If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
01:09:52.080 | For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,
01:09:55.080 | and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world."
01:10:00.080 | Now if you read this outside of the context of who wrote it,
01:10:04.080 | it's still a powerful verse reminding us of not loving the world.
01:10:09.080 | But when you understand the personality behind,
01:10:12.080 | the karma behind the person that God used to write this text,
01:10:16.080 | the lust of the world, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes,
01:10:19.080 | and the boastful pride of life.
01:10:23.080 | Do you think maybe when John was writing this that he's convicted?
01:10:28.080 | The boastful pride of life.
01:10:31.080 | Do you think he was thinking through how he spent so much time
01:10:34.080 | arguing with Peter and the other disciples?
01:10:37.080 | Do you think how he kind of manipulated and secured his mom
01:10:41.080 | to get an end to it so that he can be exalted and taste some of that glory?
01:10:45.080 | Do you think that John possibly while he was writing this
01:10:49.080 | had those thoughts in his mind? Yes.
01:10:53.080 | Yes, the Holy Spirit is the author, but the Holy Spirit used the personalities
01:10:57.080 | and the experiences and the education of the writer
01:11:01.080 | to express what he desired for us.
01:11:05.080 | He's writing this from personal experience.
01:11:09.080 | And then in 1 John 4, 7-12, look at how many times, just in these 4 or 5 verses,
01:11:13.080 | how many times he uses the word love.
01:11:17.080 | "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and everyone who loves is born of God,
01:11:21.080 | and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
01:11:27.080 | By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son
01:11:31.080 | into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love,
01:11:35.080 | not that we love God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
01:11:39.080 | Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought to love one another.
01:11:43.080 | No one has seen God at any time.
01:11:47.080 | If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us."
01:11:51.080 | Would you think that the guy who wrote this
01:11:55.080 | is the same guy who wanted to bring thunder and kill the Samaritans?
01:11:59.080 | Who would think?
01:12:03.080 | So we ask the question, "What happened? What happened to him?
01:12:07.080 | How did that guy become this guy?"
01:12:11.080 | In fact, you know what's really interesting is John 19, 26, 27,
01:12:15.080 | as Jesus is hanging on the cross,
01:12:19.080 | He sees John, and He basically tells John
01:12:23.080 | to take care of his mom. So this is what He says,
01:12:27.080 | "When Jesus saw his mother, and knowing that he's about to leave,
01:12:31.080 | and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby,
01:12:35.080 | He said to his mother, 'Woman, behold your son.'
01:12:39.080 | Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother.' From that hour, the disciple took her
01:12:43.080 | into his own household." Now there's two things I want to highlight here.
01:12:47.080 | Who's writing this? John.
01:12:51.080 | John is writing this. And John, as he is writing this,
01:12:55.080 | he describes himself as the disciple whom he loved
01:12:59.080 | standing nearby. He described himself.
01:13:03.080 | Now, we may look at that and say, "Man, this is arrogant.
01:13:07.080 | Like Jesus didn't love the other people." I'm the
01:13:11.080 | one that He loves. More than you, suckers.
01:13:15.080 | Sucker is just added. It's not in the text.
01:13:19.080 | Sometimes we can read it and maybe say, "That's kind of arrogant."
01:13:23.080 | Or, "Did he only really love Jesus?"
01:13:27.080 | Or, "The other ones he didn't love." In fact, he uses that same
01:13:31.080 | description of the one Jesus loves in John 13,
01:13:35.080 | 23, John 22, John 21, 7, John 21,
01:13:39.080 | 20. Repeatedly, over and over again, he describes himself
01:13:43.080 | in his own letter as the one that Jesus loved.
01:13:47.080 | If you don't know the context of why he's saying that, who is saying that,
01:13:51.080 | the drama that he went through, before his radical
01:13:55.080 | change, if he was to write this letter, he probably would have said, "John, the one
01:13:59.080 | who sits at the right hand of Jesus. John, who stands
01:14:03.080 | for truth and righteousness and will not compromise. John, who is
01:14:07.080 | honored above the others because he didn't forsake Jesus.
01:14:11.080 | John, who is the head of the other disciples." That's probably what
01:14:15.080 | he may have written. But when he says,
01:14:19.080 | "John, the one loved by Jesus."
01:14:23.080 | Of all the things that he could have said of himself,
01:14:27.080 | the greatest thing that he
01:14:31.080 | used to describe himself is the one that is loved.
01:14:35.080 | The one that is loved.
01:14:39.080 | Not the one that is exalted, not the one that
01:14:43.080 | stood for righteousness, just the one that is loved.
01:14:47.080 | Isn't that exactly what Jesus says when the disciples come back and we saw
01:14:51.080 | the heavens open and we cast out demons and praise God for this.
01:14:55.080 | Jesus says, "Great, and you will see greater miracles, but be careful.
01:14:59.080 | Be careful.
01:15:03.080 | The greatest joy that you have is that your name is written in the
01:15:07.080 | book of life. That you are loved.
01:15:11.080 | Not because you did great things, not because you were talented,
01:15:15.080 | not because you had honor, not because you brought so many people to Christ, but the
01:15:19.080 | greatest thing that you have is you are loved.
01:15:23.080 | You are loved.
01:15:27.080 | No one could take that away from you.
01:15:31.080 | The greatest thing that any sinner can have
01:15:35.080 | is the love.
01:15:39.080 | Radical change in John.
01:15:43.080 | What happened? What happened to him? What was the difference?
01:15:47.080 | He walked with Jesus for three years.
01:15:51.080 | What happened? The cross was not in the picture.
01:15:55.080 | They didn't understand the cross.
01:15:59.080 | So even when Jesus talked about the cross, they heard it and they said they were afraid to ask Him
01:16:03.080 | because they kept on asking dumb questions and Jesus kept on rebuking them. So they just kind of
01:16:07.080 | filed it away because they didn't understand the cross.
01:16:11.080 | That when He said He was going to head to glory, all they saw was Him sitting on the throne.
01:16:15.080 | But the path to this throne was this cross.
01:16:19.080 | How often do we
01:16:23.080 | even as we sing and memorize scripture
01:16:27.080 | is the cross not at the center?
01:16:31.080 | The greatest place of life,
01:16:35.080 | the greatest connection with Christ, the greatest place of glory,
01:16:39.080 | the greatest place where we recognize who God is, is at the cross.
01:16:43.080 | So it makes absolutely no sense
01:16:47.080 | for any Christian, any pastor, any missionary,
01:16:51.080 | any Christian, to have the throne.
01:16:55.080 | You know, if I follow Jesus,
01:16:59.080 | He's going to take care of my children, pay my bills, get a better job, have a great family,
01:17:03.080 | and then when that doesn't come true,
01:17:07.080 | where is God?
01:17:11.080 | And the question that He will ask is, "Where is the cross?"
01:17:15.080 | Didn't I tell you, "He who finds his life will lose it"?
01:17:19.080 | Didn't I tell you that? Didn't I tell you that if you want to come after me,
01:17:23.080 | you must pick up your cross and deny yourself? Didn't I tell you that?
01:17:27.080 | Didn't you see the examples of the disciples? Didn't you see the examples of the
01:17:31.080 | apostles? That if you want to find true life,
01:17:35.080 | you must first be crucified with Christ.
01:17:39.080 | You're not going to find life through Christ.
01:17:43.080 | You're going to find life in Christ, and the Christ of the cross.
01:17:47.080 | How much of our frustration
01:17:51.080 | comes is because we are looking past the cross
01:17:55.080 | and looking at the throne. That we want our version
01:17:59.080 | of the left or to the right.
01:18:03.080 | For ourselves, for our children, for our family.
01:18:07.080 | And how much of our frustration isn't because we're following Christ.
01:18:11.080 | How much of our frustration is coming because we're following the Christ that
01:18:15.080 | John and James thought. It wasn't until
01:18:19.080 | they encountered the resurrected Christ.
01:18:23.080 | And they realized what Jesus said.
01:18:27.080 | "He who believes in me, even when he dies, shall live."
01:18:31.080 | It wasn't until he encountered the resurrected Christ and the
01:18:35.080 | Holy Spirit comes upon them and they realize their life
01:18:39.080 | isn't central.
01:18:43.080 | In John 12, 24 to 25, "Truly, truly,
01:18:47.080 | I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,
01:18:51.080 | it remains alone.
01:18:55.080 | But if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it,
01:18:59.080 | and he who hates his life in this world will keep it
01:19:03.080 | to life eternal." Galatians 2, 20.
01:19:07.080 | Paul says, "I have been crucified
01:19:11.080 | with Christ." Is that just Paul's testimony?
01:19:15.080 | Is that just because he's an apostle?
01:19:19.080 | No, Jesus said to all of us,
01:19:23.080 | "True life is found when we pick up our own cross and follow
01:19:27.080 | the path that he went. It is no longer I
01:19:31.080 | who live." Can we say that? Is that really
01:19:35.080 | our testimony? Are we finding a different version
01:19:39.080 | of life through Christ? Or is it really Christ?
01:19:43.080 | It is no longer I who live. He didn't come
01:19:47.080 | to simply make us a better version of ourselves.
01:19:51.080 | He didn't come to save us from family problems so that we can
01:19:55.080 | have a better security in retirement.
01:19:59.080 | I have been crucified. He completely said,
01:20:03.080 | "Your old self dies." Whatever ambition, hope,
01:20:07.080 | joy that you may have found outside of Christ,
01:20:11.080 | he says, "They're to die, but Christ lives in me.
01:20:15.080 | In the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith
01:20:19.080 | in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up
01:20:23.080 | for me."
01:20:27.080 | So much of our struggle is reflected in James
01:20:31.080 | and John. Even as we walk with Christ,
01:20:35.080 | even as we serve, even as we teach, even as we
01:20:39.080 | lead, we have our eyes on the throne
01:20:43.080 | to the left or to the right. What Christ called us to do
01:20:47.080 | is to die. Die.
01:20:51.080 | First die. First struggle with your flesh.
01:20:55.080 | First put it to death. That all our
01:20:59.080 | ambition, my reputation, my desire, my security, my
01:21:03.080 | wanting, my opinions, first die.
01:21:07.080 | That a new life may be established in Christ,
01:21:11.080 | in faith. Because until then,
01:21:15.080 | you will see the joy in other people. You will be able to testify
01:21:19.080 | about the testimonies of other people, but it will never become your
01:21:23.080 | testimony. Jesus said, "I have come to give
01:21:27.080 | life, and to give this life abundantly." And this life comes
01:21:31.080 | if we follow him, pick up our own cross,
01:21:35.080 | deny ourselves, that he may be exalted. I pray
01:21:39.080 | that that may be our passion and our joy, and it
01:21:43.080 | would be our pursuit. That the people who have known us in the past
01:21:47.080 | will meet us and say, "What happened to you?" And when they ask us that question,
01:21:51.080 | we can point to Christ. Let's pray.
01:21:55.080 | Gracious and loving Christ, we love you.
01:22:03.080 | We want to love you more.
01:22:07.080 | You know how easily distracted we are. You know how
01:22:11.080 | difficult it is sometimes for us to detect
01:22:15.080 | sin and pride in us. I pray that your
01:22:19.080 | word would truly judge the thoughts and intentions of our heart.
01:22:23.080 | That our life, Lord God, may be from you and you alone.
01:22:27.080 | Lord, we want the world to know that there
01:22:31.080 | is hope. As you've given us a mission, Lord God,
01:22:35.080 | to be the light, to be the salt of this earth,
01:22:39.080 | that we would not sweep that under the rug.
01:22:43.080 | And as Paul was crucified, I pray that you would
01:22:47.080 | challenge us to know what that means for us. That we may
01:22:51.080 | also be crucified. That our old self
01:22:55.080 | is buried. That only the new self in Christ
01:22:59.080 | and faith is what lives.
01:23:03.080 | We thank you for your patience. We thank you for
01:23:07.080 | answered prayer. And may Christ
01:23:11.080 | and Christ alone receive the glory of
01:23:15.080 | your suffering. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
01:23:19.080 | Let's all stand up for the closing praise.
