00:30:38.620 | as I put what people thought of me
00:30:40.700 | before what God thought of me.
00:30:42.520 | I mimicked other people in the way I dressed,
00:30:45.920 | talked, walked, and laughed,
00:30:48.180 | wearing a mask that hid the true me.
00:30:50.700 | As I learned to say and do the right things
00:30:52.540 | to be received as a quote-unquote Christian,
00:30:55.180 | I became two-faced and lived a double life.
00:30:57.460 | I was even confirmed and therefore proclaimed to the church
00:31:01.220 | that I had accepted Christ
00:31:03.220 | and believed that he is Lord and Savior of my life,
00:31:05.540 | and yet my life was not reflecting Christ's
00:31:07.660 | when I was alone.
00:31:09.140 | While those around me had a burning passion for God,
00:31:11.380 | his love for us, and how he saved them,
00:31:13.300 | I was faking it.
00:31:14.260 | And the scariest part of all this
00:31:16.700 | was that I had done it subconsciously.
00:31:18.980 | I did not know that I had lost my identity
00:31:20.900 | in my way to Jesus.
00:31:22.580 | Being surrounded by believers all my life,
00:31:24.540 | I was secured in a bubble,
00:31:25.780 | and my faith had unknowingly become
00:31:27.840 | something that was not of my own.
00:31:30.140 | During the quarantine of 2020,
00:31:31.580 | I realized all this in addition to forgetting
00:31:34.220 | what it was like to love,
00:31:35.460 | as I felt apathetic to any love shown to me.
00:31:38.060 | My heart was hardened to anything my community said to
00:31:41.420 | and did for me.
00:31:43.020 | When my cousin invited me out to Berean,
00:31:45.100 | I was amazed at how rooted in the Bible
00:31:46.860 | Berean Community Church was,
00:31:48.540 | for I was never taught how to properly study the Bible,
00:31:52.100 | let alone directed to read it.
00:31:53.620 | However, the more I came out,
00:31:56.000 | I stood in awe and wonder at how marvelous the Lord is,
00:31:58.980 | and how much he truly loves us despite our imperfections.
00:32:02.620 | Through some of the leaders and friends
00:32:03.980 | from college ministry,
00:32:05.160 | I was able to hear and receive the gospel,
00:32:07.700 | along with their testimonies
00:32:08.780 | on how their lives were completely changed.
00:32:11.100 | It always encouraged me and left me wondering
00:32:13.340 | when it would happen for me.
00:32:16.820 | Learning more about God,
00:32:17.740 | I prayed that he would reveal himself to me
00:32:19.660 | and truly open my eyes to his glory,
00:32:21.740 | but I left all the work for God to do.
00:32:23.780 | I needed to do my part and surrender my everything to him,
00:32:26.700 | but I couldn't let go of the things
00:32:27.980 | that I thought were keeping me together,
00:32:29.800 | but in reality were tearing me apart.
00:32:31.660 | There was no date or time in which I accepted Christ,
00:32:35.200 | but gradually within the past year,
00:32:37.220 | as I participated in small group accountability
00:32:40.300 | and Friday night Bible study,
00:32:41.980 | God's love was exposed to me,
00:32:43.680 | and in turn my love for him
00:32:45.140 | and desire to know him grew exponentially.
00:32:48.200 | I learned to love and what it felt like to love.
00:32:50.600 | I learned that love is different for everyone
00:32:52.360 | and that I cannot have the same standards
00:32:54.600 | or expectations of love as the world.
00:32:56.860 | The more time I spent studying his word,
00:33:00.060 | the smaller I felt towards God's holiness
00:33:01.960 | and his magnificence.
00:33:04.360 | I realized how much sin had invaded my life,
00:33:06.580 | how it clouded my views on God
00:33:08.120 | and how much I needed the Lord
00:33:09.600 | to save me from my hopeless state,
00:33:11.600 | which led me to true repentance.
00:33:14.080 | A verse that I've been meditating on
00:33:15.600 | is 1 John 4, verses seven through eight.
00:33:19.200 | Beloved, let us love one another,
00:33:20.760 | for love is from God,
00:33:21.920 | and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
00:33:24.780 | The one who does not love does not know God,
00:33:28.280 | for God is love.
00:33:29.580 | Thank you.
00:33:30.420 | (audience applauding)
00:33:34.520 | , - Thank you.
00:33:35.520 | (audience applauding)
00:33:38.680 | . - You understand when you go into the water,
00:33:43.680 | and you look in the mirror, you look twice back,
00:33:48.680 | and when you come out,
00:33:49.600 | you look in the mirror, you look twice apart.
00:33:50.600 | At that second, you look at the water,
00:33:51.600 | you look at the sun.
00:33:53.180 | (audience applauding)
00:33:56.340 | (speaking faintly)
00:33:59.260 | (audience applauding)
00:34:09.380 | - All right, thank you, Christine, for that testimony.
00:34:21.500 | And I know a lot of you college students
00:34:23.320 | and the college staff have been praying for her for a while,
00:34:25.540 | and so, 'cause she's friend of my daughter,
00:34:27.900 | so I've been kinda watching and hoping and praying,
00:34:31.260 | so it was really rewarding to be able to see that together.
00:34:34.980 | If you can turn your Bibles with me
00:34:36.540 | to Ephesians chapter three, verses 14 through 21.
00:34:40.780 | So we're gonna be taking, again,
00:34:43.060 | taking a couple weeks in this text
00:34:45.780 | as we prepare for 2022,
00:34:48.140 | and we wanna make sure that we understand
00:34:50.660 | what our priorities are and what are some things
00:34:52.660 | that we're gonna be focusing on in the new year, in 2022.
00:34:55.940 | So I wanted to take two weeks to dive into this text,
00:35:00.220 | and hopefully, we'll get a better footing
00:35:03.100 | of where we're headed in the next year.
00:35:05.580 | I'm gonna be looking at verse 14 all the way to verse 21.
00:35:09.060 | Reading out of the NASB.
00:35:10.340 | For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father,
00:35:13.420 | from whom every family in heaven and on earth
00:35:15.900 | thrives its name, that he would grant you,
00:35:18.340 | according to the riches of his glory,
00:35:19.720 | to be strengthened with power through his Spirit
00:35:21.900 | in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell
00:35:24.420 | in your hearts through faith,
00:35:25.740 | and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
00:35:28.180 | may be able to comprehend with all the saints
00:35:30.020 | what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
00:35:32.420 | and to know the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge,
00:35:35.660 | that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
00:35:38.780 | Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly
00:35:41.820 | beyond all that we ask or think,
00:35:44.180 | according to the power that works within us,
00:35:46.100 | to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
00:35:49.300 | to all generations forever and ever, amen.
00:35:52.220 | Let's pray.
00:35:53.040 | Gracious Father, we ask for your guidance.
00:35:58.140 | We ask for your Holy Spirit to lead us.
00:36:01.400 | Lord, we know that we can exposit and we can teach,
00:36:07.860 | and yet without your Holy Spirit, Lord,
00:36:09.820 | we can understand nothing.
00:36:11.920 | And so we are dependent on you,
00:36:14.940 | asking, Father, for your grace.
00:36:17.220 | Open our eyes, our ears, soften our hearts toward God,
00:36:20.200 | that we may receive your word.
00:36:21.780 | In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
00:36:23.440 | Some of you guys probably already know
00:36:28.020 | that the names of each month of the year
00:36:31.300 | is actually based upon some Roman idol
00:36:34.180 | or god that they worshiped,
00:36:35.980 | because our calendar came from that period.
00:36:38.220 | And so the Roman idol that got the name for January
00:36:43.220 | is Janus.
00:36:45.260 | And the reason why they named January Janus
00:36:48.220 | is because Janus, the god that the Romans worshiped,
00:36:53.220 | was the guardian of the arches or doors.
00:36:57.820 | And what it represented was that you would pass
00:37:02.660 | from the previous year to the new year,
00:37:04.780 | and so this god Janus guarded that door
00:37:08.260 | to make sure that the right things are passing through,
00:37:10.940 | and that's why they named January January.
00:37:14.300 | Appropriately, obviously,
00:37:16.460 | because we're making that transition,
00:37:17.900 | and every year around this time,
00:37:19.820 | we make New Year's resolutions as we think about the past,
00:37:23.180 | what happened in 2021,
00:37:25.320 | and where should we be headed in 2022.
00:37:29.100 | And so again, we're in this text
00:37:31.020 | because we wanna make sure that we're grounded
00:37:33.500 | and we're on the same page going forward.
00:37:36.060 | You probably heard this quote from Socrates many times,
00:37:39.940 | "An unexamined life is not worth living."
00:37:42.980 | And so I know many of you heard this before.
00:37:46.180 | This is a quote that is quoted quite a bit,
00:37:48.140 | but I'm not sure how many of you know the context
00:37:50.480 | in which he said this.
00:37:51.660 | Socrates actually was executed because of his influence
00:37:55.500 | on the youth of his generation.
00:37:58.020 | So he was beginning to question some of the state's mandates
00:38:02.620 | of what gods that they're supposed to worship,
00:38:04.580 | what gods they're not supposed to worship,
00:38:05.860 | and so Socrates in no way was a Christian,
00:38:09.200 | but he was beginning to influence the youth,
00:38:11.660 | telling them that some of these idols were worthless,
00:38:14.060 | and he was introducing idols of his own.
00:38:16.180 | And so they brought him into court,
00:38:18.020 | basically saying that if you don't stop teaching these youth
00:38:20.740 | and begin to have this mass influence,
00:38:23.300 | that you're gonna be jailed or even executed.
00:38:25.620 | So it's in that context that Socrates stood up and said,
00:38:29.220 | "A life that is unexamined is not worth living."
00:38:32.220 | In other words, I'd rather die than to just give in
00:38:36.060 | and just you telling me to think
00:38:37.520 | the way I'm supposed to think
00:38:38.420 | and do whatever I'm supposed to do, it's not worth living.
00:38:41.780 | So that's the context in which Socrates says this term,
00:38:45.020 | an unexamined life is not worth living.
00:38:48.120 | As we face 2022,
00:38:51.300 | what is it that we have thought in 2021
00:38:55.300 | that needs to change?
00:38:57.220 | What are some things that we're going through
00:38:58.980 | in the new year that we want to examine?
00:39:01.740 | Whenever we want to head somewhere,
00:39:06.700 | we need to make sure that we have three things
00:39:09.220 | that we need to know.
00:39:10.780 | First, let's say if you're going to Fashion Island
00:39:13.340 | and you're looking for Nordstrom, as an example.
00:39:15.860 | The first thing you do when you get out of your parking lot
00:39:18.980 | and you get to, before you start walking,
00:39:21.020 | you need to find out where Nordstrom is.
00:39:23.160 | So typically you'll look at a map, find out where it is.
00:39:26.460 | And then once you find out where it is,
00:39:28.240 | there's a second thing that you need to know.
00:39:30.980 | What's the second thing you need to know?
00:39:32.940 | You need to know where you are.
00:39:35.260 | Knowing where Nordstrom is is useless
00:39:37.180 | unless you know exactly where you are.
00:39:39.260 | And so once you find out where you need to go,
00:39:42.100 | and then you figure out where you are,
00:39:44.140 | the next step is what's the fastest way to get there?
00:39:46.620 | What's the most efficient way to get there?
00:39:48.460 | So whenever we're lost or when we have specific direction,
00:39:51.540 | we need to first figure out where am I going?
00:39:54.580 | And so, Apostle Paul actually says this very thing
00:39:58.040 | in Philippians chapter three, 12 through 15,
00:40:00.960 | as he is in jail with possibility of execution,
00:40:05.320 | he says, in summary of his life, he says,
00:40:08.000 | "Not that I have already obtained it
00:40:10.320 | "or have already become perfect,
00:40:11.680 | "but I press on so that I may lay hold
00:40:14.360 | "of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus."
00:40:19.360 | Apostle Paul says his main goal in his life
00:40:22.520 | is to possess for himself what Christ has given him.
00:40:27.520 | Now we all know that we've been purchased
00:40:29.440 | by the blood of Christ, so we belong to him.
00:40:31.440 | But Apostle Paul says, as much as I belong to him,
00:40:34.320 | he says, Christ needs to belong to me.
00:40:36.800 | And so his life goal was to know Christ,
00:40:41.680 | know Christ, and then obviously his ministry
00:40:44.280 | was to make him known.
00:40:46.440 | So his goal is pretty clear,
00:40:48.600 | and this is not uniquely to Apostle Paul,
00:40:50.840 | but for every Christian, that our purpose in life
00:40:55.000 | is to have Christ, and then to have more of Christ,
00:40:58.760 | to know him, to love him, to proclaim him,
00:41:02.200 | to honor him, to glorify him.
00:41:04.560 | This is nothing new to any Christian.
00:41:06.080 | If you've been a Christian for any period of time,
00:41:07.800 | you know that the Bible makes it clear this is our goal.
00:41:11.600 | But the second thing that we need to know
00:41:13.960 | is then where are you in that?
00:41:17.000 | Apostle Paul says, "Not that I have already obtained it."
00:41:21.760 | He says, "I'm not there yet."
00:41:23.080 | If Apostle Paul's not there,
00:41:24.600 | for sure you and I are not there, right?
00:41:27.680 | Typically we can think of our justification,
00:41:30.000 | it's like we're saved, so from now on
00:41:32.240 | we just kind of coast along in life
00:41:33.760 | and we'll see where this goes.
00:41:35.520 | Says, "No, Apostle Paul, the man who teaches us
00:41:38.120 | "about justification says, 'I have not obtained this yet.'"
00:41:41.880 | In other words, he doesn't have the fullness of Christ.
00:41:45.480 | And so he says, "I'm not there yet."
00:41:47.240 | So therefore, he says, "I pressed on,
00:41:50.320 | "I reach, forgetting what is behind."
00:41:53.560 | And so for every Christian, as we face the new year,
00:41:58.560 | and look back at 2021 and the previous years,
00:42:02.060 | what is it that I need to do in order for me
00:42:06.160 | to be able to say at the end of my life
00:42:08.380 | that I lived a good life, right?
00:42:10.560 | If you have bucket list of places to go,
00:42:12.800 | if you check off all of that, at the end of your life,
00:42:15.080 | you're gonna say, "Well, this was a good life
00:42:16.440 | "because I saw everything I wanted to see.
00:42:19.280 | "I ate everything I wanted to eat.
00:42:22.000 | "I made as much money as I could."
00:42:23.720 | Is that what you would say at the end of your life
00:42:26.200 | and say, "This was a good life"?
00:42:28.200 | I don't think any Christian would say that, right?
00:42:31.620 | Because what we value, at least we profess to value,
00:42:35.840 | is Christ.
00:42:37.760 | And so we live based upon what we would be able to say
00:42:42.760 | was a good life, to honor Christ, to proclaim Christ,
00:42:46.640 | to have more of Christ.
00:42:48.440 | And so what is it that we need to do, tangibly,
00:42:50.920 | when we make applications, right?
00:42:53.520 | Whenever you make an application that's kind of vague,
00:42:58.520 | every year you're gonna make the same application,
00:43:00.840 | I need to be a better Christian, right?
00:43:03.560 | And so what does that mean, to be a better Christian?
00:43:06.480 | So at the end of the year, you're gonna look at your life
00:43:08.480 | and you're gonna have some things
00:43:09.600 | that you feel guilty about,
00:43:10.720 | and maybe I shouldn't have done this,
00:43:12.160 | I should be a better Christian.
00:43:13.200 | The next year, when the new year comes around,
00:43:16.320 | you say, "Well, what do you need to do?"
00:43:17.160 | I say, "Yeah, I should be a better Christian."
00:43:19.760 | Whenever you make your applications vague,
00:43:22.840 | you're gonna end up repeating the cycle
00:43:24.360 | over and over again, right?
00:43:26.360 | So if we're going to make application,
00:43:28.480 | we need to be specific.
00:43:30.240 | What is it that you think needs to be put away?
00:43:34.940 | What is it that you need to actively pursue and prioritize?
00:43:37.480 | So if you say, "I'm gonna value my time with Christ,
00:43:40.640 | "and I'm going to really prioritize that,"
00:43:43.260 | when is that gonna happen?
00:43:44.720 | I say, "In the morning."
00:43:47.960 | Well, what time in the morning?
00:43:49.160 | What time do you normally wake up?
00:43:50.720 | And what time should you wake up?
00:43:52.960 | What is it that you need to do?
00:43:54.400 | And so you need to put that on the calendar.
00:43:55.840 | So if you say, "I need to be in better health,"
00:43:58.160 | what does that mean?
00:43:59.100 | You're gonna go to the gym?
00:43:59.940 | How many times?
00:44:00.780 | What are you gonna do?
00:44:02.360 | What are the exercises programmed?
00:44:03.520 | So you take all of that and you apply that,
00:44:06.120 | and then after you finish, you can look back and say,
00:44:08.420 | "I did it or I didn't do it."
00:44:09.880 | But if we're not careful,
00:44:11.800 | we make these general sweeping things that say,
00:44:13.980 | "I need to be in better health, I need to do this better,"
00:44:16.400 | but then there's no specific applications that we make
00:44:18.800 | in order for us to take this path.
00:44:21.600 | It's just like going to Fashion Ion,
00:44:24.560 | it's, "I need to get to Nordstrom,
00:44:26.400 | I'm way over here, hopefully I can get there."
00:44:29.480 | And then you just don't look at the path
00:44:31.720 | and you don't start walking, right?
00:44:33.360 | And so that's the reason that we wanna make sure
00:44:36.240 | that as we're headed to 2022,
00:44:38.080 | what is it that we lack individually,
00:44:40.080 | but specifically today,
00:44:42.320 | what is it we lack as a church
00:44:44.720 | that we wanna make sure that we need to be strengthened in?
00:44:48.160 | Last year, our theme was Watch and Pray.
00:44:52.360 | I put today's title of my sermon, Hope and Pray, right?
00:44:56.520 | So the theme is not much different.
00:44:58.880 | And the reason why it's not much different
00:45:00.360 | is because at the end of the year,
00:45:01.920 | as the elders get together
00:45:03.160 | and we evaluate where we need to go,
00:45:05.960 | again, we feel like this is our weakness in the church.
00:45:09.620 | And so this is not, through the years,
00:45:12.680 | we probably put this as a theme more than any other theme,
00:45:15.360 | right, there's a few years where we're saying,
00:45:16.600 | "We need to build community,
00:45:18.520 | "we need to have better teaching in this and that area,
00:45:20.720 | "or evangelism," but probably more than any other theme
00:45:24.440 | that we've evaluated and said,
00:45:26.280 | "We need to really be strengthened,"
00:45:27.560 | and it's probably this topic of discipline of prayer.
00:45:31.040 | And I don't think it's any different this year.
00:45:35.440 | I feel like we made some progress,
00:45:39.000 | but not to the point where we feel like where we ought to be.
00:45:42.640 | We need to be a church that is not just known
00:45:45.480 | for Bible teaching, but also for prayer.
00:45:49.100 | Prayer tends to be weak in Bible-teaching churches,
00:45:55.680 | and I don't think we're any different,
00:45:57.600 | if we're being honest with ourselves.
00:46:00.680 | We have a tendency, because we know our theology,
00:46:04.820 | we know our Bible, that somehow that gives us an edge
00:46:09.140 | to everybody else.
00:46:11.560 | If we are theological, and if we are Bible-centered,
00:46:16.560 | without prayer, without you knowing it,
00:46:21.320 | you will easily become proud.
00:46:24.920 | Even the ones that may be sitting here thinking like,
00:46:26.960 | "Ah, I don't know about that, you know,
00:46:29.020 | "I'm pretty good with humility."
00:46:30.700 | Right, in fact, I dominate in humility, right?
00:46:35.200 | Maybe some of you are thinking that,
00:46:36.400 | maybe, you know, obviously I'm exaggerating,
00:46:39.360 | but almost always, if you commit yourself
00:46:43.640 | to the Word of God without prayer,
00:46:46.120 | pride creeps in, whether you know it or not.
00:46:49.400 | 'Cause you think you know, when you really don't.
00:46:51.800 | You feel like you're in the presence of God,
00:46:54.800 | when you're not.
00:46:55.640 | You think you know God, when you do not know him.
00:46:59.200 | It's just like, it's no different than reading a book
00:47:02.600 | about somebody and saying, "I know him."
00:47:04.200 | It's like, no, you don't know him.
00:47:05.280 | You know about him, you don't know him.
00:47:08.480 | And that's why a tendency is,
00:47:10.480 | a strong Bible-teaching church tends to be weak in prayer,
00:47:14.880 | because we feel confident that we are right with God in this
00:47:18.440 | and yeah, of course, yeah, of course, prayer is important,
00:47:21.120 | but we don't realize just how important it is.
00:47:24.580 | If I teach wrong doctrine, you will be up in arms,
00:47:30.880 | and I hope you will be.
00:47:32.000 | If you're not, I'd be very disappointed.
00:47:34.640 | Right, if I taught something wrong and nobody said this,
00:47:37.720 | I'd say, "Amen," and then you went home.
00:47:40.000 | Right, I'm not doing my job.
00:47:42.280 | But for some reason, Bible-teaching churches,
00:47:46.440 | when prayer is lacking, there is no up in arms.
00:47:49.740 | There's no grieving.
00:47:52.660 | And again, that's because this is our blind spot,
00:47:57.560 | and we need to work on that.
00:47:58.880 | We need to emphasize that.
00:48:00.080 | And even if it takes the rest of my life,
00:48:03.440 | we need to work on that.
00:48:04.280 | And I say this not because I've mastered prayer,
00:48:06.640 | but because I desire to,
00:48:08.760 | and I want our church to be the same.
00:48:11.680 | We need to be focused on prayer.
00:48:13.480 | Ephesians 6, 18-19, we are told,
00:48:17.440 | we are told to put on the full armor of God,
00:48:23.280 | helmet of salvation, but breastplate of righteousness.
00:48:26.040 | And after he goes through all of that,
00:48:27.720 | saying that our battle is not against flesh and blood,
00:48:30.000 | it's a spiritual battle, and after he tells us all of this,
00:48:32.760 | he concludes this statement by saying, in verse 18-19,
00:48:35.920 | with all prayers and petitions,
00:48:37.840 | pray at all times in the Spirit.
00:48:41.160 | And with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance,
00:48:44.100 | with petitions for all the saints,
00:48:46.760 | and pray for me on behalf so that others may be given my ...
00:48:50.280 | My mouth will be opened to proclaim the gospel.
00:48:52.520 | And so in other words, what he says,
00:48:53.720 | after you've done all of that,
00:48:56.320 | he says, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray.
00:49:00.700 | That's how he ends that whole section.
00:49:04.480 | So we shouldn't miss that, the whole point
00:49:06.120 | that he's trying to get at.
00:49:06.960 | After you've done all of that, if you do not pray,
00:49:11.040 | you end up relying upon your own resources,
00:49:14.600 | your own knowledge, your own experience, your own intellect.
00:49:19.120 | After you've done everything that God calls you to do,
00:49:21.480 | humble yourselves and recognize that you need Christ
00:49:25.680 | in your theology, that you and I need Christ
00:49:30.720 | in our ability, in our talent,
00:49:32.800 | because easily we can take every gift that God has given us
00:49:36.880 | and turn it into a curse,
00:49:39.080 | because it brings pride inside of us.
00:49:42.620 | We need to pray.
00:49:43.960 | Think about Jesus' ministry,
00:49:47.760 | his disciples who walked with him,
00:49:50.840 | and all the things that the disciples
00:49:52.680 | could have asked Jesus to teach them,
00:49:55.520 | Jesus, that his disciples said,
00:49:57.760 | "Teach us how to do what?
00:50:00.400 | Walk on water?"
00:50:02.440 | You think I would have asked that, right?
00:50:04.800 | That's a cool trick, you know what I mean?
00:50:07.000 | Evangelism would be so easy if I just walked on water,
00:50:10.400 | you know what I mean?
00:50:11.240 | Just gather people and walk on water,
00:50:12.520 | and if I was levitating on water and preach the gospel,
00:50:14.960 | in my mind, I think they'd come to Christ, right?
00:50:18.280 | You get a bunch of hungry people together
00:50:20.040 | and feed them miraculously.
00:50:22.320 | I say, "Man, that might help a little bit,"
00:50:24.180 | you know what I mean?
00:50:25.720 | He raised people from the dead.
00:50:27.720 | He calmed storms that even professional fishermen
00:50:31.580 | were scared to death because of the storm,
00:50:33.680 | and he just comes out and says, "Stop!"
00:50:36.560 | And you want to think, with all the things that Jesus did,
00:50:40.300 | that the disciples would teach us how to do that,
00:50:44.760 | teach us how to multiply fish and loaves,
00:50:48.740 | teach us how to walk on water,
00:50:50.200 | teach us how to heal the sick, the lame,
00:50:52.160 | open eyes to the people who are blind.
00:50:54.060 | Yet they observed, of all the things that Jesus did,
00:50:58.900 | that what they wanted to be able to do,
00:51:02.080 | teach us, Lord, how to pray.
00:51:04.620 | Now, think about it from our perspective.
00:51:07.760 | Do you not know how to pray?
00:51:10.280 | Of all the things that Jesus did,
00:51:13.660 | prayer is the most mundane.
00:51:16.240 | Prayer is something that they've been doing
00:51:17.620 | for thousands of years.
00:51:19.740 | Prayer is something that any one of us can decide to do.
00:51:22.480 | Is it because they didn't know how to close their eyes?
00:51:25.760 | Is it because they didn't know the words
00:51:28.120 | or they weren't articulate enough?
00:51:30.480 | What was it about Jesus's prayer
00:51:32.820 | in the midst of all the miracles
00:51:34.700 | and the power that he demonstrated?
00:51:36.520 | He says, "Teach us how to pray."
00:51:39.640 | There was something about his prayer life
00:51:43.900 | that they recognized that this is something
00:51:46.080 | that we need to have,
00:51:47.600 | above everything else that Jesus was doing.
00:51:50.880 | Teach us how to pray.
00:51:53.700 | Matthew chapter 7, 7, Jesus says,
00:51:57.020 | "Ask and it will be given to you.
00:51:58.440 | Seek and you will find.
00:51:59.760 | Knock and it will be opened to you."
00:52:02.800 | I mean, he's a sovereign God.
00:52:03.960 | Why do we need to ask?
00:52:05.400 | Why do we need to knock?
00:52:07.320 | If he's so eager to give it to us,
00:52:08.720 | why does he wait for us to knock
00:52:10.320 | and to ask so he can answer us?
00:52:13.940 | Think about what the point of salvation ultimately is.
00:52:19.760 | The point of salvation isn't simply to save us
00:52:23.680 | from the penalty of sin,
00:52:25.560 | but the power of sin, for what purpose?
00:52:27.660 | So that we can come to him.
00:52:30.640 | That's the point of the gospel.
00:52:35.080 | The point of the gospel is not simply not going to hell.
00:52:38.600 | That is a byproduct of being reunited
00:52:41.460 | with our heavenly father, the author of life.
00:52:45.420 | So the whole point of salvation,
00:52:47.140 | the whole point of justification
00:52:48.980 | is to call sinners to himself.
00:52:52.980 | So when he says, "Your sins have been forgiven,"
00:52:55.800 | the very next thing is, "Come!"
00:52:58.700 | Because you couldn't come before.
00:53:00.960 | Sinners could not come to him.
00:53:03.160 | In the old covenant, God didn't tell them to come.
00:53:06.040 | He said to stay away or you will die.
00:53:09.080 | And if you do want to come,
00:53:10.400 | here are all these rituals that you need to go.
00:53:12.480 | Here are the animals that needs to be soldered.
00:53:14.520 | Here's the blood that needs to be sprinkled all over.
00:53:17.120 | And he didn't tell them to come.
00:53:19.360 | Sinners were not welcomed into his presence
00:53:21.440 | or you will die.
00:53:22.860 | So now that Christ has come and washed us with his blood
00:53:26.700 | and he took away the barrier,
00:53:28.780 | the point of salvation is to come.
00:53:31.860 | And that's why he says, "Ask, seek, and to knock."
00:53:36.380 | Because he wants us to take advantage
00:53:38.980 | of what it is that he has done for us.
00:53:41.020 | And it says in James chapter 4, 2,
00:53:43.460 | "You do not have because you do not ask."
00:53:48.540 | Think about how frustrated we are sometimes with life,
00:53:52.000 | the people that we complain about,
00:53:53.920 | the circumstance that we're in.
00:53:55.520 | Have we been bringing this to the Lord?
00:53:59.760 | Really bringing this to the Lord?
00:54:02.560 | Why is this this way?
00:54:04.640 | Why is that there?
00:54:05.480 | Why did God allow this?
00:54:06.960 | Did you bring this to him?
00:54:08.500 | Or does this apply to you?
00:54:11.040 | You do not have because you did not ask.
00:54:15.480 | I don't know how many times I come to the Lord in prayer
00:54:19.500 | frustrated and even angry about certain things at church
00:54:24.180 | or maybe even certain people.
00:54:25.620 | And I would be on my knees being rebuked in prayer.
00:54:31.500 | And in prayer realizing how gracious God is
00:54:35.660 | and how loving he is.
00:54:37.900 | And it was me who was frustrated.
00:54:41.220 | It was me who was bitter
00:54:43.340 | that I wasn't practicing the love that he gave to me.
00:54:46.080 | He was actually much more patient than I was.
00:54:49.240 | And then there's also times when I'm at perfect peace.
00:54:53.120 | Everything seems just fine.
00:54:55.680 | And in prayer realizing that God is not at peace,
00:54:59.640 | that there is no peace,
00:55:01.480 | that he wants me to speak on this subject.
00:55:03.800 | He wants me to say and draw the line and be righteous.
00:55:07.360 | But I don't know how many times I've thought in my mind
00:55:11.300 | that because I have a verse to stand on
00:55:14.120 | that I have righteousness.
00:55:15.840 | But my heart is corrected when I come
00:55:20.760 | in the presence of God in prayer.
00:55:22.400 | I can know all things in my head
00:55:26.040 | but there's a huge difference between being illuminated
00:55:29.600 | and having revelation.
00:55:30.720 | Revelation is just having information.
00:55:33.940 | You have information about God.
00:55:37.200 | You can study the gospel.
00:55:38.900 | You can exposit the text.
00:55:40.120 | And so you have revelation.
00:55:41.560 | Illumination is when God takes the revelation
00:55:44.560 | and he changes your heart.
00:55:45.720 | He opens your eyes.
00:55:47.020 | So a sinner is not saved simply
00:55:50.040 | because he hears the gospel.
00:55:51.640 | If that's the case the whole world will be saved.
00:55:54.400 | All we need to do is proclaim the gospel.
00:55:56.400 | It's the revelation where the Holy Spirit comes
00:55:59.640 | and he opens our eyes and he illuminates a sinner
00:56:02.080 | to bring him to repentance.
00:56:07.040 | And so the Bible tells us that you and I cannot bear fruit
00:56:11.080 | unless we abide in him.
00:56:12.720 | So what does abiding mean?
00:56:14.120 | Abide isn't simply finding more revelation.
00:56:18.880 | Abiding in him means to be broken in our sins.
00:56:24.640 | To be utterly dependent upon him.
00:56:26.760 | To be humble before his presence and to be dependent on him.
00:56:30.600 | So if you are a man or a woman
00:56:32.600 | who is very proficient in the word of God
00:56:35.040 | and weak in prayer, you're just as weak
00:56:37.920 | as somebody who is not proficient with the word of God
00:56:40.520 | and who does not pray.
00:56:43.160 | You are not anymore righteous.
00:56:45.600 | You do not know Christ anymore than the next person
00:56:49.920 | who doesn't know anything but doesn't know God in prayer.
00:56:54.240 | That's how important prayer is.
00:56:58.360 | Again, I say all of this because you and I
00:57:01.520 | are in a Bible teaching church,
00:57:02.920 | which I am the primary teacher.
00:57:04.920 | And this is something that I recognize
00:57:07.600 | that we need to continue to strive.
00:57:09.960 | That prayer is not, as long as we have the right doctrine,
00:57:14.840 | like prayer is something that we need to work on.
00:57:16.280 | No, prayer is just as important.
00:57:19.000 | That if you cannot tolerate wrong teaching,
00:57:23.760 | you should not tolerate prayerlessness either.
00:57:27.040 | It is that important.
00:57:30.600 | And so as a church, as we face 2022,
00:57:33.360 | this is something that we want to continue
00:57:35.480 | to emphasize in our church,
00:57:36.920 | that we don't want to be known just as a church
00:57:39.320 | that preaches right doctrine.
00:57:41.920 | We also need to be known as a church
00:57:45.360 | that is humble before God in prayer.
00:57:47.920 | The text that we're looking at in verse 14 to 21,
00:57:53.160 | Paul is summarizing what he's been saying
00:57:57.560 | in three chapters about who God is,
00:57:59.840 | and then he kind of leads us into prayer.
00:58:02.000 | Like this is what he's praying for.
00:58:04.280 | And so there's five things that I want to point out
00:58:06.920 | in this text, and so today we're going to cover two,
00:58:09.280 | and then next week we're going to cover the other three.
00:58:11.840 | So the first thing that we want to look at,
00:58:13.760 | why do we need to pray?
00:58:15.120 | Why do we need to pray?
00:58:18.720 | And he just simply says in verse 14, "For this reason."
00:58:22.640 | Well, "For this reason" means that he's been making
00:58:26.920 | an argument prior to this text.
00:58:29.320 | So the immediate context of this is, "For this reason,"
00:58:32.080 | he's talking about his gospel ministry.
00:58:34.000 | But I believe that Apostle Paul is not just talking
00:58:36.400 | about this immediate context,
00:58:37.760 | he's talking about what he's been saying
00:58:39.280 | all throughout the book of Ephesians.
00:58:41.320 | And so he's summarizing the whole three chapters,
00:58:46.000 | and he says, "Everything that I've been telling you
00:58:48.160 | "about your salvation and what God has done,
00:58:50.520 | "the love that he poured upon you,
00:58:52.120 | "for this reason, we need to bow our knees
00:58:55.960 | "before our heavenly Father for this reason."
00:58:58.600 | So a quick summary of the first three chapters.
00:59:02.240 | Ephesians 1, 3-14, and I'm just going to give you
00:59:07.840 | a cliff note version of this text.
00:59:09.960 | "He blessed us, he chose us, he predestined us,
00:59:16.160 | "he adopted us according to his will, by his grace.
00:59:21.120 | "He redeemed us by his blood, by his grace.
00:59:25.200 | "He made known the mystery of his will
00:59:27.400 | "according to his kind intention, he purposed,
00:59:30.240 | "he gave us inheritance to the praise of his glory."
00:59:33.840 | This text, I mean, it's so rich in theology.
00:59:37.360 | If you have any text that you say,
00:59:40.240 | "You know what, I want to really memorize this
00:59:42.320 | "and put it to heart," it would be this text
00:59:44.480 | because it is just rich in theology.
00:59:46.560 | From predestination to justification to election,
00:59:50.120 | adoption, inheritance, all of it
00:59:51.760 | is contained in this short text.
00:59:53.740 | So whenever we go through this text
00:59:56.200 | or whenever we study the book of Ephesians,
00:59:58.080 | we can get wrapped up in, what is predestination?
01:00:00.360 | What is election?
01:00:01.380 | What is adoption?
01:00:02.300 | What is inheritance?
01:00:03.440 | And every single one of these topics
01:00:06.200 | are rich in theology that we really should master.
01:00:09.320 | But if we're not careful, we can miss
01:00:12.120 | the whole point of this text.
01:00:14.960 | Because this text, as rich it is in theology,
01:00:18.360 | what holds it together?
01:00:23.480 | He says the word he and him over 23 times.
01:00:28.480 | So when we talk about predestination, election,
01:00:32.760 | inheritance, adoption, and all this stuff,
01:00:34.920 | he always emphasizes he did it, he purposed it,
01:00:38.560 | he provided it, he did it according to his riches
01:00:41.480 | for his glory, his grace, 23 times.
01:00:44.900 | So the main point of the text isn't simply
01:00:49.080 | what we got from that.
01:00:50.720 | The main point of this text is him.
01:00:53.940 | He, him, he did it, he did it.
01:00:57.180 | When a child is adopted into a home,
01:01:00.600 | the blessing for that child is not a better house
01:01:05.300 | or a nicer car or better food or nicer room.
01:01:10.300 | All these things are byproduct, but the main gift is what?
01:01:16.940 | He got a new father, a new mother.
01:01:22.100 | And so everything that that child gets is a byproduct
01:01:25.980 | of being adopted and loved by the mother and the father.
01:01:30.540 | We can easily mistaken and celebrate predestination
01:01:35.740 | and election and about eternity in heaven
01:01:38.360 | and not going to hell and being freed from judgment.
01:01:41.020 | We can do all of that and completely miss the point.
01:01:43.880 | Because the whole point of the condemnation of man
01:01:48.100 | is that we were separated, fallen what, short of what?
01:01:52.060 | Fallen short of joy, fallen short of the garden of Eden,
01:01:55.940 | fallen short of heaven, all of these things are true.
01:01:58.060 | But how is it described?
01:01:59.840 | We have fallen short of the glory.
01:02:02.820 | We have fallen short of God's glory.
01:02:05.580 | We've been separated from the author of life.
01:02:07.620 | So the whole point of salvation is to bring us back.
01:02:11.460 | To bring us back for this reason.
01:02:17.940 | See, if we're not careful, we can spend all our days
01:02:21.500 | celebrating how awesome the work of Christ is
01:02:26.300 | by taking away the barrier.
01:02:28.660 | And we become, the more we study the Bible,
01:02:33.420 | we become the experts in describing how awesome
01:02:38.420 | it was for the door to be gone.
01:02:42.220 | The barrier's gone, how did he do that?
01:02:45.060 | Well, he suffered for us.
01:02:47.220 | He took on sin for himself.
01:02:49.460 | He adopted us, he elected us, he came incarnate,
01:02:52.900 | became incarnate 100% man, 100% God,
01:02:55.260 | and so we become so proficient in theology
01:02:57.780 | and we become experts in describing what happened,
01:03:01.620 | yet never entering the throne of grace with confidence.
01:03:06.960 | Because the whole point of salvation
01:03:09.660 | is not to simply say the wall,
01:03:11.460 | the barrier has been taken away, yes!
01:03:15.860 | The whole point of salvation is because
01:03:17.180 | the barrier's taken away, to come.
01:03:19.820 | To come.
01:03:22.300 | That's like receiving a gift and never using it.
01:03:26.860 | The greatest gift that you and I have,
01:03:29.940 | you have from the old covenant to new covenant
01:03:32.940 | is that the curtain to the holy of holies was ripped.
01:03:36.380 | So the curtain ripping basically meant
01:03:40.700 | there was a welcome mat.
01:03:43.900 | Instead of saying return, he said now you can come.
01:03:48.520 | That's the invitation of the gospel,
01:03:51.260 | come to me all who are weary and heaven-laden
01:03:53.140 | and I will give you rest.
01:03:55.500 | You know why he says I will give you rest?
01:03:56.980 | Because we're all striving, the whole world
01:03:59.700 | is striving after event after event,
01:04:02.660 | job after job, looking for some sort of peace.
01:04:05.600 | It's like peace of mind for our children,
01:04:08.820 | peace of mind for retirement,
01:04:10.860 | peace of mind in our jobs, in our family.
01:04:13.800 | But he says no, come to me, all you who are weary,
01:04:17.860 | going from place to place, from stage to stage in life.
01:04:22.180 | And you shall not find peace there.
01:04:24.700 | He says I will give you peace.
01:04:26.340 | And you shall find rest for your souls.
01:04:29.620 | My yoke is easy and my burden is light.
01:04:33.800 | So the whole point of our salvation is to come to him.
01:04:38.200 | So if we study the word of God,
01:04:39.980 | and we're laboring in the church,
01:04:42.740 | and we're doing all of these great things, proclaiming,
01:04:45.300 | and yet we neglect prayer, neglect to come to him,
01:04:48.180 | then you've neglected not just a small part
01:04:50.020 | of your salvation, you've neglected the whole point
01:04:52.220 | of your salvation, to come.
01:04:55.800 | And that's why he says therefore, come.
01:04:58.300 | Does your bucket list have anything to do with Christ?
01:05:04.700 | Ephesians 1, 18 to 19, Paul basically summarizes
01:05:09.020 | his whole heart.
01:05:11.880 | And this is something that I think you and I
01:05:13.940 | need to pay attention to.
01:05:15.220 | The whole reason why the Bible is taught,
01:05:18.880 | the whole reason why we do expository preaching,
01:05:23.340 | is not so that at the end of it you say,
01:05:25.000 | oh, I've heard a lot of sermon from a lot
01:05:27.120 | of great preachers, and so I know more than you.
01:05:30.320 | Hearing and studying of the word of God for you
01:05:34.220 | has done more damage than good,
01:05:35.540 | if that's what you think the end result is.
01:05:38.160 | Come to me.
01:05:41.160 | Paul says in Ephesians 1, 18 to 19,
01:05:42.960 | I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.
01:05:46.340 | Now why do their eyes need to be enlightened
01:05:49.140 | when Paul basically revealed everything to them?
01:05:51.540 | He's like, oh, it's because they're not smart?
01:05:55.680 | Is he praying for better IQ?
01:05:58.320 | Is he praying for all of us to be A students
01:06:00.660 | so that we can exposit the text and understand it better?
01:06:03.900 | What does he mean for their eyes to be enlightened
01:06:06.560 | when he's the one who told them?
01:06:10.220 | No, he's not talking about revelation.
01:06:11.940 | He's talking about enlightenment.
01:06:13.580 | He's praying that God would use the word
01:06:16.820 | that you've heard and break you,
01:06:19.460 | break me, to humble me,
01:06:24.300 | to bring us to himself.
01:06:27.560 | He's calling us.
01:06:30.460 | When he says, I pray that the eyes of your heart
01:06:32.060 | may be enlightened, so that you will know
01:06:34.140 | what is the hope of his calling,
01:06:35.820 | what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance
01:06:38.180 | in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness
01:06:40.700 | of his power toward us who believe?
01:06:43.900 | Our churches are filled with people
01:06:47.740 | who have right theology, who know the verse to quote,
01:06:51.940 | yet do not know Christ.
01:06:55.100 | And that's the greatest place of danger.
01:06:59.500 | The person who does the greatest damage
01:07:02.380 | is the person who has the greatest knowledge,
01:07:04.580 | and yet does not know Christ.
01:07:08.640 | This is why we need to pray.
01:07:11.240 | We need to couple our efforts in the word of God
01:07:14.080 | with much prayer, not just prayer sprinkled,
01:07:18.240 | not just knowing the importance of prayer,
01:07:20.880 | but we need to pray.
01:07:21.920 | We need to humble ourselves and pray.
01:07:24.960 | As much attention we give to the exposition
01:07:27.720 | of the word of God, we need to give
01:07:29.040 | equal attention to prayer.
01:07:34.080 | We pray, ultimately, because we have hope,
01:07:38.000 | and that's really the summary
01:07:39.880 | of everything he's been saying.
01:07:41.440 | Why do we need to know the love
01:07:44.720 | and the power that we have in Christ?
01:07:46.040 | Because we have hope, that's what he's saying.
01:07:48.160 | Because we have hope.
01:07:49.680 | Remember David, because of his great sin,
01:07:52.540 | he commits adultery and then he ends up
01:07:55.440 | killing Bathsheba's husband, and as a result of that,
01:07:58.920 | God said that your kingdom's gonna be divided,
01:08:02.000 | and you're gonna lose your first child.
01:08:04.800 | And just as God said, the prophecy's coming true.
01:08:07.600 | After Bathsheba has her child,
01:08:10.680 | the child falls ill and is about to die.
01:08:12.800 | And David gets on his knees and he begins to pray.
01:08:17.840 | And he cries out to God and he said he fasted.
01:08:21.120 | He fasted so much that his subjects
01:08:23.560 | were actually concerned for him.
01:08:25.960 | You should eat something.
01:08:26.800 | He said, I cannot.
01:08:28.320 | My child is sick and I need to plead to the Lord.
01:08:31.280 | And as God said, prophecy comes true and his child dies.
01:08:36.120 | And to the surprise of his subjects,
01:08:39.340 | he just gets up, he shakes head off,
01:08:42.280 | and then he just goes back to work.
01:08:43.920 | And so his disciples are perplexed.
01:08:48.360 | I mean, you were so passionate praying and fasting.
01:08:51.480 | How do you just, you know, he dies and then you just move on.
01:08:55.360 | And David's response was, as long as he lived, I have hope.
01:09:01.200 | But now that he's gone, I can go to him,
01:09:05.320 | but he can't come to me.
01:09:06.660 | In other words, the hope is gone.
01:09:10.480 | So there's no point to pray.
01:09:13.680 | That's what David was saying.
01:09:15.160 | See, that's David.
01:09:19.400 | He says he prayed as long as there is hope.
01:09:22.600 | But here's the difference in the new covenant.
01:09:24.900 | In a new covenant, remember the disciples.
01:09:28.800 | They were so courageous.
01:09:30.200 | Like Jesus, the leaders of Israel were trying to get at Jesus
01:09:34.000 | from the very beginning of his ministry.
01:09:35.840 | Remember, Jesus would just walk through the crowd.
01:09:38.600 | Right, he just disappears.
01:09:39.900 | I mean, they hated him from the beginning
01:09:42.980 | because from the get-go, it didn't take him a couple years
01:09:46.800 | for him to call them out.
01:09:47.760 | As soon as the Pharisees and Sadducees came,
01:09:50.160 | Jesus said, who told you to come to be baptized?
01:09:53.500 | Bear fruit in accordance to your repentance.
01:09:56.520 | Your repentance means nothing.
01:09:58.660 | If there's no change in your life.
01:10:00.720 | And so they were angry with him from the get-go.
01:10:03.800 | And these are powerful men who could literally
01:10:05.960 | put him in jail and possibly even stone him to death.
01:10:09.160 | And so the disciples, as long as they walked with him,
01:10:11.920 | they were safe.
01:10:13.780 | They were hungry, he was fed.
01:10:15.420 | In the middle of the storm, he would calm them down.
01:10:18.520 | But all of a sudden, Jesus comes into Jerusalem
01:10:21.440 | and he begins to surrender.
01:10:23.100 | He's the most powerful person that they've ever met.
01:10:26.440 | He's the Messiah, Son of God.
01:10:28.820 | And yet he surrenders himself to go to the cross.
01:10:32.580 | The disciples are watching him from a distance.
01:10:35.360 | He must have something up his sleeve.
01:10:37.940 | Maybe he's gonna pretend like he's gonna surrender
01:10:40.340 | and then right before he's crucified,
01:10:42.400 | he's just gonna go, bam!
01:10:44.040 | And the revolution's gonna take place.
01:10:46.580 | So they're watching him from a distance,
01:10:48.000 | watching, watching.
01:10:49.540 | And then when they realized that Jesus
01:10:52.360 | was going to be handed over and die,
01:10:56.400 | all of a sudden, they're disillusioned.
01:10:58.680 | This courageous man, Peter,
01:11:04.000 | who was willing to take his sword out
01:11:05.340 | and go on this fight, even though,
01:11:07.080 | humanly, they were outnumbered,
01:11:08.640 | all of a sudden becomes a coward.
01:11:11.360 | And so as Jesus is being crucified,
01:11:15.160 | all the disciples scattered in fear,
01:11:17.640 | in locked doors, that maybe that will happen to them.
01:11:20.300 | As you know, the story doesn't end there.
01:11:25.920 | Christ comes back and resurrected on the third day.
01:11:28.880 | And after they meet the resurrected Christ,
01:11:33.120 | their hope is reignited.
01:11:34.960 | And it is in this hope, Jesus calls them
01:11:39.500 | to make disciples of all the nations,
01:11:42.160 | baptizing them, name of the Father,
01:11:43.560 | the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
01:11:44.960 | Behold what?
01:11:46.000 | I am with you.
01:11:48.960 | The Christ who was crucified,
01:11:50.560 | who was resurrected on the third day,
01:11:52.280 | he is with you.
01:11:54.880 | And the apostles say that the power of the cross
01:11:58.520 | says even when you die, he said, you shall live.
01:12:03.000 | And that's what he means when he says,
01:12:05.620 | for this reason, we have to pray,
01:12:09.760 | because we have hope.
01:12:11.200 | As Christians, it doesn't matter
01:12:14.720 | how long this pandemic lasts.
01:12:16.240 | It doesn't matter what kind of government that we have.
01:12:18.360 | It doesn't matter what kind of economic downturn
01:12:20.680 | that it may have.
01:12:21.720 | There is no Christian who is never without hope.
01:12:25.400 | We have a hope that this world cannot take away
01:12:28.520 | no matter what circumstance that we're in.
01:12:31.440 | No matter what happens in 2022,
01:12:33.440 | our hope remains steadfast and steady.
01:12:38.440 | And that's what he's trying to say.
01:12:40.000 | Therefore, he says, we need to pray.
01:12:43.960 | First Peter 1:36, blessed be the God and Father
01:12:47.600 | of our Lord Jesus Christ,
01:12:48.640 | who according to his great mercy
01:12:50.120 | has caused us to be born again to a living hope.
01:12:55.040 | Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
01:12:57.840 | To obtain an inheritance which is imperishable,
01:13:01.280 | undefiled, will not fade away,
01:13:03.280 | reserved in heaven for you,
01:13:04.680 | who are protected by the power of God
01:13:06.180 | through faith for salvation,
01:13:07.660 | ready to be revealed in the last time.
01:13:09.880 | You notice he doesn't say protected by your hard work,
01:13:14.040 | protected by your church,
01:13:15.240 | protected by your ingenuity or the right program.
01:13:18.760 | He says, no, protected by what?
01:13:20.640 | By the power of God, by faith.
01:13:24.000 | Despite, right?
01:13:26.040 | Despite us, God says, you have hope, living hope.
01:13:31.340 | So for this reason, he says to pray.
01:13:33.800 | Secondly, how should we pray?
01:13:35.780 | In this simple statement, he says,
01:13:38.800 | to kneel down before, kneel down,
01:13:43.320 | bow my knees before the Father
01:13:44.920 | from whom every family in heaven and on earth
01:13:47.240 | derived his name.
01:13:48.080 | He says to kneel.
01:13:51.360 | Philippians 2, 10 through 11, he says,
01:13:52.840 | so that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow
01:13:55.800 | of those who are in heaven and on earth
01:13:57.280 | and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess
01:13:59.360 | that Jesus Christ is Lord,
01:14:00.640 | through the glory of God the Father.
01:14:03.000 | We come to Christ humbled,
01:14:07.320 | surrendered.
01:14:10.280 | The word kneel, the posture basically is
01:14:13.920 | to surrender in awe.
01:14:17.560 | Last week, Pastor Nate gave a sermon about fear
01:14:21.520 | and the general thing that was kind of proclaimed
01:14:26.520 | last week about fear is there's a fear
01:14:28.920 | that leads to despair.
01:14:31.000 | And that fear we know.
01:14:32.380 | So many of us make decisions based upon
01:14:36.600 | what we're afraid of.
01:14:37.760 | That if we do this, what will people think of me?
01:14:42.560 | If we do this, what about the consequence?
01:14:45.960 | And so we hedge every decision that we make,
01:14:49.860 | what is the results that's gonna hit.
01:14:52.360 | So if I do this, am I gonna lose my job?
01:14:53.840 | Am I not gonna be able to advance in my career?
01:14:57.200 | And what if I lose my health?
01:14:59.640 | And what if my children don't get what they want?
01:15:01.600 | And so everything that we do,
01:15:03.560 | we hedge it based upon the fear.
01:15:06.880 | Well, if I say this, what are they gonna think of me?
01:15:08.600 | If I don't do this, what are they gonna think of me?
01:15:10.380 | So all of our life is kind of like hedged
01:15:14.560 | and bound by certain fears that we have.
01:15:17.600 | So there's fear that leads to despair.
01:15:20.720 | And then there's fear that leads to worship,
01:15:24.120 | which is what the world doesn't understand.
01:15:27.680 | Because the only fear that leads to worship
01:15:32.600 | is when we are knelt before our holy God.
01:15:36.000 | Every instance in the Bible when men and women
01:15:39.560 | are in the presence of God's glory,
01:15:41.840 | the first response is terror.
01:15:44.000 | The first response is an, oh God, we were waiting for you.
01:15:48.520 | You know, you loved us, and so can I come
01:15:51.160 | and sit near you?
01:15:52.000 | It's like, that's not the response.
01:15:54.060 | The immediate response is terror.
01:15:55.480 | Ezekiel chapter 128, Ezekiel is in the presence
01:15:58.440 | of God's glory, the incarnate Christ.
01:16:00.400 | What happens?
01:16:01.240 | He falls on his face, he's knelt down, terrified.
01:16:04.240 | Matthew chapter 17, verse six.
01:16:08.240 | God speaks of his son, he says, this is my son
01:16:10.600 | in whom I am well pleased.
01:16:12.040 | And when the disciples see the glory of God,
01:16:15.720 | their first response is they fell on their faces
01:16:19.560 | and were terrified.
01:16:20.800 | In Revelation chapter 117, when Apostle John
01:16:24.820 | is in the presence of Jesus' glory,
01:16:27.080 | it says he fell down, and he says he felt like a dead man.
01:16:31.280 | In Revelation 514, the elders in the presence
01:16:36.200 | of the glory of the throne, he says they fell down.
01:16:40.600 | And then look what it says in Revelation 7, 11 to 12.
01:16:43.240 | And all the angels were standing around the throne,
01:16:45.640 | around the elders and the four living creatures,
01:16:47.560 | and they fell on their faces before the throne,
01:16:52.160 | and then worshipped, saying, amen, blessing and glory
01:16:56.600 | and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power
01:16:58.780 | and might be to our God forever and ever, amen.
01:17:03.160 | You don't equate, you and I don't equate fear with joy.
01:17:09.160 | If something causes fear, we move away from that.
01:17:14.160 | We don't buy houses where we don't feel safe.
01:17:17.240 | We don't take vacations where we're fearful.
01:17:20.320 | Our whole world got shut down because of fear
01:17:23.380 | of this thing that we can't even see.
01:17:26.120 | Fear usually does not equate with joy and peace.
01:17:32.040 | And yet, in every instance, a man or a woman
01:17:37.760 | in the presence of God, they fall terrified,
01:17:40.640 | and in their terror, they worship.
01:17:44.720 | They worship, and worship is equated with joy.
01:17:49.900 | Worship is equated with life.
01:17:54.380 | And Jesus said, I have come to give life
01:17:55.920 | and give this life abundantly.
01:17:57.960 | And it wasn't until they recognized
01:17:59.960 | that they were in the presence of God's glory
01:18:01.920 | that they felt terrified, and then that terror
01:18:04.760 | led to worship and joy and life.
01:18:08.280 | So the whole purpose of our salvation
01:18:10.880 | is to bring us to this holy God,
01:18:13.360 | covered in the blood of Christ,
01:18:15.720 | recognizing who we are standing in front of,
01:18:19.280 | who we are praying to, and experiencing this life
01:18:24.280 | in his presence.
01:18:25.720 | One of the most convicting sermons I've heard
01:18:31.540 | was on this subject of prayer is Martin Lloyd-Jones.
01:18:35.880 | Martin Lloyd-Jones says, "Prayer is the hardest,
01:18:37.840 | "one of the hardest things to do as a professing Christian,
01:18:41.460 | "and it is impossible for an unsurrendered person to pray."
01:18:45.920 | I mean, prayer as a discipline is easy, physically.
01:18:51.680 | Close your eyes.
01:18:52.880 | When other people close their eyes, you close your eyes.
01:18:55.720 | And you have certain things that you wanna say
01:18:57.200 | in your head, just say it.
01:18:58.560 | And say, well, we pray.
01:19:00.760 | But he said, true prayer, you cannot come to God
01:19:05.760 | on your own terms.
01:19:07.600 | An unsurrendered man or woman cannot come
01:19:10.960 | into the presence of God.
01:19:12.280 | Jeremiah 29, verse 13, it says,
01:19:17.960 | "You will seek me and find me when you search me with,"
01:19:20.520 | what, "all your heart."
01:19:23.560 | Part of the reason why prayer is ineffective
01:19:28.080 | in our generation is because our churches are filled
01:19:32.240 | with people who have not surrendered their lives to Christ.
01:19:35.980 | And just like Martin Lloyd-Jones says,
01:19:38.340 | you cannot pray unsurrendered.
01:19:40.540 | Because the Holy Spirit that is residing in us
01:19:44.300 | is groaning and interceding on our behalf,
01:19:46.780 | contradicting your prayers.
01:19:50.260 | The thing that the Holy Spirit wants for us and from us
01:19:57.020 | is leading away from what we desire from our flesh.
01:20:01.960 | So our prayers and the work of the Holy Spirit
01:20:04.820 | is fighting each other.
01:20:06.580 | So when we come to the Lord in prayer,
01:20:10.940 | instead of communing with God,
01:20:12.940 | we're wrestling with the Spirit.
01:20:15.340 | And that's why our prayers are so frustrated.
01:20:19.140 | Because an unsurrendered man cannot pray
01:20:22.900 | until he has decided for himself that this is what he wants.
01:20:27.580 | And it was chapter five, four, and six,
01:20:30.420 | that seek me that you may live.
01:20:33.100 | He didn't say seek me so that you may have peace.
01:20:35.100 | He didn't say seek me so that you may experience joy.
01:20:38.020 | He said seek me that you may live.
01:20:40.340 | Verse six, seek the Lord that you may live.
01:20:45.780 | No one casually drifts into the presence of God.
01:20:49.980 | No one wakes up one morning and says,
01:20:52.580 | you know what, I'm just gonna pursue life
01:20:53.820 | and hopefully if I'm around enough Christians
01:20:56.740 | and if I attend Bible study faithfully
01:20:58.260 | that I'm gonna wake up at the end of 2022
01:21:00.540 | and just have this passionate love for Christ.
01:21:03.060 | Because everything around us is drifting away from Him.
01:21:08.500 | So if we don't actively anchor ourselves,
01:21:12.020 | if we don't actively pursue Christ,
01:21:13.700 | if we don't actively pray before God,
01:21:16.820 | you will find yourself at the end of 2022
01:21:20.260 | further away from God than where you are today.
01:21:24.420 | He says seek me that you may live.
01:21:29.700 | Even before we pray, we need to make up our mind.
01:21:34.700 | You can't, bowing the knees here
01:21:37.860 | is not just talking about physically, right?
01:21:40.500 | As long as you don't have bad knees,
01:21:41.980 | any one of us can just get on our knees, right?
01:21:44.940 | Obviously that's not what he's talking about.
01:21:47.860 | He's talking about surrendering.
01:21:49.420 | He's talking about worship.
01:21:52.540 | He's talking about recognizing who he is to be surrendered.
01:21:57.580 | Remember Joshua at the end of his life,
01:22:00.380 | he was so frustrated with the Israelites
01:22:02.860 | because they kept on going back and forth
01:22:04.980 | to worshiping God, to worshiping idols.
01:22:07.820 | And the reason why they were worshiping idols
01:22:09.660 | is not because they were more attractive.
01:22:12.860 | I mean, it's just a wood figure that they just carved out.
01:22:14.860 | It means nothing, there's no power in it.
01:22:17.100 | But the reason why they kept on worshiping these idols
01:22:19.180 | is because they were looking at what the Canaanites had
01:22:21.900 | and thought maybe if I worship it,
01:22:24.780 | maybe we'll have wealth, maybe we'll have power.
01:22:27.460 | We'll have more children, maybe we'll have this and that.
01:22:30.020 | And so they were willing to compromise
01:22:31.900 | because they weren't surrendered to God.
01:22:34.540 | And it's at the end of his life, Joshua says,
01:22:37.820 | "If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord,
01:22:41.740 | "choose for yourself today whom you will serve,
01:22:45.800 | "whether the gods which your father served
01:22:48.140 | "which were beyond the river,
01:22:49.560 | "or the gods of the Amorites," I'm gonna say Americans,
01:22:55.560 | "in whose land you are living,
01:22:57.880 | "but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
01:23:01.400 | To bow our knees before the Father,
01:23:04.920 | we need to make up our mind.
01:23:07.180 | Have you said this to your family, to yourself?
01:23:13.240 | I'm not sure where the other people are going,
01:23:14.900 | but for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
01:23:18.880 | He is my Lord.
01:23:21.900 | Not my safety, not my comfort, not my retirement,
01:23:26.560 | not my wife, not my children.
01:23:29.260 | He is my Lord.
01:23:31.760 | As we go forward in 2022,
01:23:35.480 | as we focus our attention on prayer,
01:23:38.480 | because we need to focus on prayer,
01:23:40.700 | the question we need to ask is, are you surrendered?
01:23:45.240 | Are you surrendered to Christ?
01:23:49.860 | When two people get married,
01:23:53.580 | they're entering into a covenant,
01:23:55.580 | and it is assumed, you don't have to be a Christian,
01:23:59.460 | but it is assumed when they enter a covenant,
01:24:01.880 | Christian or non-Christian,
01:24:03.500 | that they're going to put aside any other relationship
01:24:07.140 | outside of this relationship, anything romantic.
01:24:12.340 | No one comes into the altar and say,
01:24:15.100 | you know what, I'll try.
01:24:19.460 | Then you shouldn't get married.
01:24:21.100 | Why do you need to get married?
01:24:21.940 | You don't come into the altar and say,
01:24:23.500 | you know what, I feel strong today,
01:24:25.580 | but I have no idea tomorrow.
01:24:27.340 | No, then don't get married.
01:24:31.380 | There's a covenant relationship.
01:24:32.500 | Basically, you're publicly professing
01:24:34.440 | that this wife, this husband, is going to be my sole love
01:24:38.520 | for the rest of my life.
01:24:40.060 | So how much more, when we have this covenant relationship
01:24:44.660 | with this holy God, that we must be committed
01:24:49.460 | that we will serve no other gods but him?
01:24:52.780 | So a commitment to prayer is a commitment to surrender,
01:24:58.020 | to recognize that he's my life, he's my hope,
01:25:02.060 | that all the pain and sorrow that you may be experiencing
01:25:06.180 | now, have experienced in the past,
01:25:09.560 | and may be coming in the future,
01:25:12.440 | that my hope is in Christ, in Christ alone,
01:25:18.460 | that we would make this commitment together.
01:25:20.660 | Commit in 2022.
01:25:22.100 | So I wanna ask the praise team to come up,
01:25:27.020 | and as the praise team comes up,
01:25:28.820 | I wanna sing this song as our closing praise, closing song.
01:25:32.480 | And you know this song well,
01:25:33.820 | I Have Decided to Follow Jesus,
01:25:35.300 | and I've shared this before,
01:25:36.220 | but I wanna share again before we sing this,
01:25:38.300 | and as we sing this,
01:25:39.580 | that'd make this a dedication for our new year.
01:25:42.440 | I have decided to follow Jesus,
01:25:45.420 | I have decided to follow Jesus,
01:25:46.740 | I have decided to follow Jesus,
01:25:48.740 | no turning back, no turning back.
01:25:50.740 | This is a very simple song that you probably,
01:25:52.660 | if you grew up in the church,
01:25:53.740 | you probably learned it in Sunday school.
01:25:56.540 | But the background story behind this is,
01:25:58.340 | it was composed by a missionary in 1889.
01:26:03.340 | So it's been around a while,
01:26:04.980 | but the reason why it got so popular,
01:26:07.380 | is that when Christianity began to sweep through India,
01:26:10.500 | in the remotest parts of the village,
01:26:13.300 | this one particular family came to Christ,
01:26:15.580 | and they were so excited about their faith,
01:26:16.980 | they began to share it with their friends.
01:26:21.020 | And so the village leader,
01:26:22.020 | who was very hostile toward Christianity,
01:26:24.540 | came out and basically got the crowd to be riled up,
01:26:28.620 | and took all of his family,
01:26:30.900 | and in the middle of the village,
01:26:32.300 | threatened them that if you do not denounce your faith,
01:26:36.320 | that your children and your wife is gonna give their life.
01:26:39.220 | Well this man sat there and he said,
01:26:42.380 | "I cannot deny my faith."
01:26:44.380 | And he saw his children one by one,
01:26:46.940 | martyred for their faith.
01:26:49.060 | And then his wife, martyred for her faith.
01:26:52.320 | And finally he turned to him and saying,
01:26:54.320 | "If you do not denounce your faith,
01:26:55.580 | "you also will lose your life."
01:26:58.420 | And it is at that moment he began to sing this song,
01:27:00.920 | "I have decided to follow Jesus."
01:27:03.220 | "I have decided to follow Jesus."
01:27:06.260 | No turning back, no turning back.
01:27:09.260 | So when he said, "I have decided to follow Jesus,"
01:27:12.380 | he's not saying that I'm gonna go to church on Sunday,
01:27:15.080 | that I'm gonna give a portion of my wealth,
01:27:20.560 | that I'm gonna serve the church.
01:27:22.160 | He was facing death.
01:27:24.620 | When he says, "No turning back," no turning back,
01:27:29.520 | that he wasn't gonna surrender this new life,
01:27:32.540 | in order to hold on to the life
01:27:34.840 | that was about to be extinguished.
01:27:36.920 | It was in that context he says,
01:27:40.180 | "No turning back, no turning back."
01:27:42.980 | The second verse says,
01:27:45.840 | "Though none go with me, I still will follow."
01:27:49.620 | "Though none go with me, I still will follow."
01:27:51.920 | Lot of us wait until revival breaks out.
01:27:56.220 | They wait until other people confess their faith.
01:28:00.260 | That I need to be with other people
01:28:03.220 | who are passionate for Christ.
01:28:04.780 | And we're kind of on a holding pattern
01:28:06.800 | until you see a movement happening,
01:28:09.180 | and until there's a movement of prayer,
01:28:11.300 | until there's a movement of revival,
01:28:13.140 | movement of evangelism, you don't participate.
01:28:17.560 | Sometimes our greatest hindrances are our own environment,
01:28:23.700 | sometimes even in our own churches.
01:28:25.720 | So when he says, "Though none go with me,
01:28:29.780 | "I still will follow,"
01:28:31.200 | even if sometimes your greatest hindrance
01:28:36.860 | is your own husband.
01:28:38.500 | Because you want to do this with him,
01:28:42.900 | but he's not coming, so you're waiting.
01:28:45.620 | Sometimes it's your own wife.
01:28:47.220 | I want to passionately pursue Christ,
01:28:49.580 | but I can't do it with her, so you're patiently waiting.
01:28:54.060 | Or maybe my children are a little bit older,
01:28:56.980 | and I can do this with them.
01:28:57.940 | Or maybe my friends, or my church, or my leaders.
01:29:02.280 | And we're just quietly, passively waiting
01:29:05.860 | for revival to break out until there's a movement
01:29:08.220 | so I can participate in this movement.
01:29:10.120 | But every instance where God calls us,
01:29:14.860 | he calls us one by one.
01:29:16.300 | And sometimes it will be many people being called one by one.
01:29:22.180 | Many times it may just be you.
01:29:25.420 | Maybe not even with your own family, it may just be you.
01:29:29.860 | Though none go with me, I still will follow.
01:29:34.260 | Though none go with me, I still will follow.
01:29:37.260 | No turning back, no turning back.
01:29:40.220 | Third verse, the world behind me, though crossed before me.
01:29:45.040 | As this man was singing this song,
01:29:47.960 | when he says the world behind me,
01:29:49.580 | he's talking about his life, his very breath.
01:29:52.220 | It's behind me now.
01:29:54.400 | Our greatest desire in this life
01:29:59.180 | is not to live a long, peaceful, prosperous life.
01:30:03.860 | That's the rat race that he saved us from.
01:30:07.860 | It's that rat race that's killing us.
01:30:11.860 | It's that rat race that's dividing us.
01:30:14.420 | It's causing contentions in the family.
01:30:16.420 | Sorrow, bitterness, all comes from a result
01:30:20.380 | of not letting go of this rat race.
01:30:23.020 | And so when he says the world behind me,
01:30:26.740 | he's not simply talking about having nice things,
01:30:28.800 | and good things, and reputation.
01:30:30.340 | He says no, this whole thing.
