00:35:29.840 | We'll actually start in Joshua 23.
00:35:36.140 | This sermon is the end of my devotions.
00:35:41.140 | Several months ago, back in the first Sunday of November,
00:35:45.720 | I preached a sermon in Joshua from chapter one
00:35:49.000 | called Be Strong and Courageous,
00:35:50.380 | because I was doing my devotions in Joshua,
00:35:52.700 | and now I've come to the end of it.
00:35:54.620 | The book of Joshua, just as a quick run-through,
00:35:58.260 | is interesting.
00:35:59.240 | It feels like a man's book,
00:36:02.160 | because so much of it is about conquest.
00:36:04.960 | Chapters one through 12 is all about being strong,
00:36:08.620 | courageous, and overcoming these incredible odds,
00:36:13.620 | where many nations gather together
00:36:17.380 | and outnumber, vastly outnumber the people of God,
00:36:20.420 | and yet there's victory.
00:36:21.900 | There's destruction of the pagan nations.
00:36:24.260 | There's the spoils, and then they move on
00:36:26.380 | to the next battle, and so it's very, very exciting.
00:36:30.020 | And then you hit chapter 13 through chapter 21,
00:36:34.420 | and it's very different.
00:36:36.400 | Some may say it's quite boring,
00:36:39.200 | but the reason why is because it just starts to list,
00:36:41.920 | and these were the nations and tribes,
00:36:44.300 | and these were the possessions of the land
00:36:46.360 | that they enter into.
00:36:47.240 | However, it's significant,
00:36:49.760 | because the promise of land within the grand scheme
00:36:55.200 | of God's desire to bless his people was pivotal.
00:36:59.620 | God promised the nation of Israel,
00:37:01.480 | when he called Abraham, he says, "I will bless you.
00:37:04.720 | "I'll bless you beyond any other, because I've chosen you,
00:37:08.040 | "and I will give you an offspring.
00:37:09.920 | "I will give you a land, and you'll become a nation."
00:37:12.240 | And so by those promises, God is fulfilling
00:37:16.280 | various elements of his blessing to his people.
00:37:19.680 | And if you think about it, Joshua is an incredible one,
00:37:22.620 | because it's the realization of the promise
00:37:25.560 | of the land for his people.
00:37:27.680 | And as we think about that promise then,
00:37:31.560 | we're thinking about both the various tribes of God,
00:37:35.880 | or the nation of Israel, having their inheritance,
00:37:39.320 | but being also then instructed.
00:37:41.000 | What are you supposed to do here now?
00:37:43.200 | After you have gone through conquest,
00:37:45.040 | after you've gone through battles,
00:37:46.860 | now that you've won the land, what are you supposed to do?
00:37:51.160 | And then in chapter 23 and 24,
00:37:53.600 | where I'm going to be now covering to you
00:37:56.440 | these, I guess, lengthy chapters,
00:37:59.480 | is Joshua's final exhortation.
00:38:02.800 | Joshua is aged, he is old, in years he's now advanced,
00:38:08.680 | and as he sees his departure,
00:38:11.520 | he's looking at the people saying,
00:38:13.220 | "Everybody, all eyes on me.
00:38:16.060 | "You need to hear the commandments of the Lord."
00:38:19.500 | And he's gonna be giving his then final sermon,
00:38:21.820 | so to speak, and we'll walk down together.
00:38:24.280 | So, let me begin by reading a small section
00:38:27.760 | in chapter 23, verse one through three.
00:38:31.080 | And it says, "Now it came about after many days,
00:38:36.080 | "when the Lord had given rest to Israel
00:38:38.360 | "from all their enemies on every side."
00:38:40.900 | So they've gone through all their battles.
00:38:43.680 | "And Joshua was old and advanced in years,
00:38:46.720 | "that Joshua called for all Israel,
00:38:48.880 | "for their elders and their heads,
00:38:50.420 | "and their judges and their officers,
00:38:52.040 | "and said to them, 'I am old, advanced in years.
00:38:56.780 | "'And when you have seen all that the Lord your God
00:38:58.940 | "'has done to all these nations because of you,
00:39:01.700 | "'for the Lord your God is he
00:39:04.140 | "'who has been fighting for you.'"
00:39:06.480 | Now, I want you to get a picture of the scene,
00:39:11.180 | an image of this individual speaking to you, okay?
00:39:15.260 | Interestingly enough, Joshua goes down in scriptures
00:39:20.360 | as one of the greatest leaders,
00:39:23.020 | one of the greatest servants of God.
00:39:25.140 | "Very little is said about him ever failing,
00:39:28.060 | "ever disobeying or sinning,
00:39:30.000 | "but rather he's been a faithful servant of God.
00:39:33.140 | "He has been trained, he has been at the right hand
00:39:36.120 | "of Moses long ago, even from the time of Egypt.
00:39:40.280 | "When the nation was underneath bondage and suffering,
00:39:42.660 | "Joshua was there.
00:39:44.840 | "When a nation was being brought out
00:39:46.320 | "in the miracles of God, the deliverance,
00:39:49.000 | "the mighty works of plagues, Joshua was there."
00:39:52.700 | And if you recall, Joshua, he was one of the members
00:39:55.780 | of the reconnaissance crew that went to scope out the land.
00:39:59.080 | He was a scout.
00:40:00.880 | He and Caleb alone said, "Yes,
00:40:03.920 | "land flowing with milk and honey,
00:40:06.660 | "but also, yes, there are giants over there,
00:40:09.240 | "but we can serve the Lord.
00:40:10.780 | "He has always been with us.
00:40:12.120 | "We can go and take this."
00:40:13.320 | But unfortunately, the rest of the nation rebelled,
00:40:16.720 | and they said, "Oh, God brought us out here to kill us.
00:40:20.480 | "We go in there, we die."
00:40:21.920 | This is a death sentence, no way.
00:40:24.400 | And God judged them.
00:40:26.120 | They walked 40 years in the wilderness,
00:40:28.560 | and all of Joshua's friends died.
00:40:31.560 | That entire generation of people that came out of Egypt,
00:40:34.240 | they passed.
00:40:35.160 | Joshua then walked the desert,
00:40:38.520 | and now he is the one regathering everybody,
00:40:42.000 | rallying them up, and he's the one who's then
00:40:44.600 | going to be used by God to have victory.
00:40:47.480 | In the scripture, because it moves so fast,
00:40:49.840 | chapters one through 12, it almost sounds like
00:40:51.720 | the battle was just boom, boom, boom,
00:40:53.880 | and then you just win this nation, win that nation,
00:40:56.360 | but actually, it was a span of seven to eight years
00:40:59.940 | in battle, trying to go through the land of Canaan
00:41:03.560 | from Jericho to different nations, seven years.
00:41:07.520 | So when you hear the voice of Joshua in your head,
00:41:10.740 | you're seeing a weathered man who has seen it all.
00:41:15.000 | He's seen then heights of conquest.
00:41:17.960 | He's seen the pitiful states of rebellion.
00:41:20.680 | He's seen wilderness wandering,
00:41:22.560 | where what in the world are we doing
00:41:24.440 | wandering for 40 years when the journey
00:41:27.200 | actually should have taken 12 days.
00:41:31.480 | I don't know if you recall, but from Egypt
00:41:33.200 | to the land of Kadesh Barnea, when they're walking
00:41:35.720 | to that pinnacle point, going over into the land,
00:41:39.040 | the promised land of Canaan, it should have taken 12 days.
00:41:43.920 | He's seen it all, and now as you can imagine then,
00:41:48.920 | a victorious general who is aged,
00:41:52.320 | and it's interesting to me that the scriptures
00:41:54.160 | repeat so many times, he is old, okay?
00:41:57.920 | In Joshua 13, when the victory is won,
00:42:01.440 | strangely enough, God says to Joshua,
00:42:03.520 | he calls on him and he says,
00:42:05.160 | Joshua was old in advance his years,
00:42:07.700 | and then the Lord said to him, you are old.
00:42:11.920 | He says, very much of the land remains to be possessed
00:42:14.640 | and you have a lot of work to do,
00:42:15.900 | but you are old, is what he says to Joshua.
00:42:19.000 | But the reason why I emphasize this is because he's dying.
00:42:21.680 | He is actually 110 years old.
00:42:24.520 | So that's the picture.
00:42:27.440 | Have you guys met people who have so much clout?
00:42:30.880 | You know the things they've accomplished in their life.
00:42:33.600 | So when they walk into the room,
00:42:35.000 | everyone's just, shh, he's about to say something, right?
00:42:38.980 | That's that scene.
00:42:39.900 | He's gathered everybody, including the leaders,
00:42:42.320 | including the priests, including anybody
00:42:44.580 | who has to hear young and old, come.
00:42:47.320 | Joshua has a word for us, and it's that important.
00:42:51.180 | And so we have to see now what he says.
00:42:53.920 | I'm gonna start reading from verse six.
00:42:56.320 | So we're at Joshua 23, verse six.
00:42:59.580 | Joshua says to the nation, be very firm then
00:43:05.120 | to keep and do all that is written
00:43:07.600 | in the book of the law of Moses,
00:43:10.440 | so that you may not turn aside from it
00:43:12.500 | to the right hand or to the left,
00:43:14.580 | so that you will not associate with these nations,
00:43:17.640 | these which remain among you,
00:43:20.040 | or mention the name of their gods,
00:43:22.180 | or make anyone swear by them,
00:43:24.100 | or swear by them, or bow down to them.
00:43:26.520 | But you are to cling to the Lord your God,
00:43:29.060 | as you have done to this day.
00:43:31.120 | For the Lord has driven out great and strong nations
00:43:33.660 | from before you, and as for you,
00:43:36.540 | no man has stood before you to this day.
00:43:39.440 | One of your men puts to flight a thousand,
00:43:42.140 | for the Lord your God is he who fights for you,
00:43:44.660 | just as he promised you.
00:43:46.500 | So take diligent heed to yourselves
00:43:49.860 | to love the Lord your God.
00:43:53.060 | Joshua, in his then final sermon,
00:43:57.620 | gives just a resounding, emphatic review
00:44:01.540 | of the commandments that he's been giving
00:44:03.540 | at every pinnacle point in the journey.
00:44:06.220 | If you look at Joshua chapter one,
00:44:08.020 | if you look at Joshua chapter five,
00:44:09.820 | Joshua chapter eight, basically,
00:44:12.020 | these commands have been given over and over and over again.
00:44:16.660 | You have to be strong.
00:44:19.300 | You have to be committed to do every single thing
00:44:22.780 | according to what God has written,
00:44:24.300 | and not stray from it to the left and to the right.
00:44:27.020 | You have to cling, literally cling to the Lord,
00:44:31.140 | be attached to him.
00:44:33.380 | And you have to make sure you're sober and alert
00:44:35.780 | to know yourself.
00:44:37.140 | Look at yourself and see, do you really love the Lord?
00:44:41.580 | Take heed, it says, to yourself that you love God.
00:44:46.460 | And the interesting thing for us is,
00:44:49.940 | right now, they are not in a time entering into battle.
00:44:54.060 | They've already won.
00:44:56.120 | There's peace all around them.
00:44:58.060 | It's now time for them to take their land
00:45:00.180 | and make it their own, occupy and enjoy.
00:45:03.220 | It's almost like maybe it's time to now settle in
00:45:06.520 | and grow roots.
00:45:07.940 | But for this leader, he knows,
00:45:12.300 | whether you're about to go into battle,
00:45:14.280 | whether you fought and you won, or even if we failed,
00:45:18.460 | at every moment, it's time to be strong,
00:45:20.520 | because his worry is he's gonna be gone.
00:45:23.580 | And he's looking at his people and saying,
00:45:26.220 | I need you to hear the one thing that you have to hear
00:45:30.060 | at every turning moment.
00:45:32.980 | Tell me now, you have to cling to God.
00:45:35.980 | You cannot sway just because I leave.
00:45:38.940 | You can't sway because there's a change of leadership.
00:45:41.940 | You can't sway because there's a lot of people,
00:45:43.940 | little people, we have resources, we don't have resources,
00:45:47.380 | we have covenants, we don't have covenants.
00:45:49.300 | I need to know that you're clinging to God.
00:45:54.300 | And so that's why three months ago, I gave that sermon.
00:45:59.940 | The command for us is to be strong,
00:46:02.100 | and that idea of being strong, not just for today,
00:46:04.980 | but for even ages to come,
00:46:07.260 | doesn't come from having this or that.
00:46:09.740 | It doesn't come from having influence, resources,
00:46:12.540 | material wealth, for sure.
00:46:14.120 | It comes from being dedicated.
00:46:16.700 | I'm gonna do it God's way, according to his word.
00:46:20.500 | An unwavering man is a man set on the word of God, amen?
00:46:25.500 | So that being the case,
00:46:27.180 | this is just the beginning of Joshua's sermon,
00:46:30.260 | and he's gonna go now into different segments
00:46:32.500 | of challenging and encouraging us.
00:46:34.740 | Think about how to be prepared for when Joshua leaves.
00:46:38.540 | So let's continue to read on, and what he says is this.
00:46:41.860 | Just skipping a little bit, we're gonna come back to it.
00:46:45.460 | Turn your eyes to verse 14.
00:46:47.300 | Verse 14.
00:46:49.280 | In Joshua 23, verse 14, he says,
00:46:52.980 | now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth,
00:46:57.180 | meaning just like everybody else, I am dying.
00:46:59.600 | And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls
00:47:04.640 | that not one word of all the good words
00:47:07.560 | which your Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed.
00:47:11.420 | All have been fulfilled for you.
00:47:12.900 | Not one of them has failed.
00:47:15.600 | What is he saying?
00:47:16.700 | It is the propensity of human individuals,
00:47:20.500 | because we operate by the flesh and with our eyes,
00:47:23.860 | that if we see a leader who is strong and powerful,
00:47:27.360 | we will attach ourselves and say,
00:47:28.820 | you know what the key is?
00:47:30.420 | We have to have a man like that.
00:47:32.500 | And what Joshua is saying is all the attention
00:47:34.940 | is completely removed from him, and he's saying,
00:47:37.180 | you know it has been the spoken word of God.
00:47:40.940 | He's gone before you to win your battles,
00:47:44.460 | and not a single word of God has failed you.
00:47:49.000 | And what he is saying is you know in your heart
00:47:52.140 | that God is good.
00:47:53.860 | He is good for his word.
00:47:55.860 | He is good because his promises to you have been good,
00:47:59.840 | and everything he spoke that he will do, he has done.
00:48:02.680 | Now to us then, number one, there's a challenge.
00:48:08.800 | I feel it.
00:48:11.080 | I don't know how many of you in here
00:48:13.820 | have that kind of unwavering conviction.
00:48:16.660 | The word of God can be trusted entirely.
00:48:21.060 | In the theological debate, they'll say
00:48:23.400 | the word of God is inspired.
00:48:26.380 | We believe in a verbal, plenary inspiration of God's word
00:48:30.100 | that all of it is inerrant.
00:48:31.940 | When I say that, it means down to every exacting word,
00:48:35.720 | down to every precise thing he says,
00:48:38.780 | but all of it, not just some pieces
00:48:41.540 | that happen to pertain to spirituality,
00:48:43.940 | but some of it just doesn't,
00:48:45.140 | all of it, plenary, is inspired by God.
00:48:48.460 | If you ask Joshua that question,
00:48:52.160 | what do you think he would say?
00:48:53.500 | Do you believe the word of God is inerrant?
00:48:55.820 | He'd probably look at us, you know,
00:48:58.540 | within his general-like way and look at us,
00:49:00.460 | are you stupid, right?
00:49:02.740 | The word of God is proven.
00:49:05.980 | I've seen it with my very eyes
00:49:08.700 | that down to the T, it's true.
00:49:14.160 | All of it.
00:49:15.740 | And he's saying to the crowd,
00:49:17.100 | he's saying to the congregation,
00:49:18.340 | you know how good it is.
00:49:20.460 | Now, I wanna go through some of the things
00:49:22.060 | that the people experienced because he highlights this idea.
00:49:25.060 | You have seen it for yourself how good God is.
00:49:29.720 | Just doing a couple of just walkthrough of Joshua,
00:49:33.020 | what's wild is that even when,
00:49:35.500 | before they actually started doing battle,
00:49:38.000 | they sent more scouts, right?
00:49:41.140 | And they sent scouts to see,
00:49:42.620 | and they already felt that there was fear
00:49:44.740 | in the eyes of their enemies.
00:49:46.540 | Actually, the scripture says,
00:49:47.940 | people's heart was melting away.
00:49:50.100 | Why was that?
00:49:50.940 | Because God had already gone before them.
00:49:54.420 | God had already gone before them.
00:49:55.700 | News of them had gone.
00:49:57.940 | What's more, the very first city that they overcome
00:50:00.680 | is Jericho, and Jericho was a fortified city.
00:50:03.940 | And you recall the ridiculous strategy,
00:50:07.760 | military strategy that they had.
00:50:10.620 | God told us to carry this ark and walk around it.
00:50:13.820 | Not the warrior men, but the priests
00:50:15.860 | and the people of God walked around shouting and screaming,
00:50:18.900 | blowing the trumpet, and they said,
00:50:21.060 | let's do it again, and they did it again,
00:50:23.180 | and the walls came crumbling down.
00:50:24.700 | That is not a military strategy you're able to repeat.
00:50:28.020 | That's you have seen the power of God moment.
00:50:31.780 | There's so many more.
00:50:33.420 | When the battle of Ai in chapter eight,
00:50:36.200 | God told Joshua, you raise your javelin.
00:50:39.140 | So he raises his javelin.
00:50:40.340 | People again demolished.
00:50:42.580 | Chapter nine, you know what's crazy is
00:50:44.580 | there's so many sequences of against all odds moment.
00:50:48.620 | I mean, if you talk about a dramatic plot,
00:50:52.140 | seven kingdoms of this place and that place
00:50:54.860 | that I can't pronounce come together against one nation,
00:50:59.420 | and then boom, they slaughter them.
00:51:02.300 | Chapter 10, same thing.
00:51:03.460 | Five kingdoms come against one king.
00:51:06.140 | I wanna read this to you because it's both hilarious,
00:51:09.080 | but also amazing, and it's just a miraculous work
00:51:12.380 | of the hand of God.
00:51:14.180 | In Joshua chapter 10, verse 10 through 11, it says,
00:51:17.660 | the Lord confounded them before Israel.
00:51:20.700 | He slew them with the great slaughter at Gibeon
00:51:24.380 | and pursued them by way of the ascent of Beth-Haran
00:51:27.420 | and struck them as far as Azekah and Makada
00:51:31.220 | as they fled from Israel while they were
00:51:33.540 | at the descent of Beth-Haran.
00:51:36.020 | God threw large stones from the heavens on them
00:51:39.080 | as far as Azekah.
00:51:40.960 | Did you know that?
00:51:42.080 | And they died.
00:51:43.280 | There were more who died from the hailstones
00:51:45.800 | than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword
00:51:48.760 | just in case you missed the hand of God.
00:51:51.480 | God did majority of the work.
00:51:54.800 | They were like heat-seeking missiles.
00:51:57.040 | It completely missed Israel's warriors
00:51:59.760 | and killed the masses of the pagan nation.
00:52:04.140 | They saw that, and for us, we get to see it
00:52:07.120 | by the testimony of Scripture.
00:52:08.720 | What I'm saying is Joshua is highlighting this idea.
00:52:14.900 | You know in your heart that God is good for his word.
00:52:18.920 | You know in your heart that God has been good to you.
00:52:21.640 | And down to the very T, I wanna give another example
00:52:25.040 | of a devastating situation where it should've been a loss.
00:52:29.780 | After all of these battles in chapter 11,
00:52:34.120 | 13 kings gathered together.
00:52:37.180 | These kingdoms now know, oh my goodness,
00:52:40.060 | the people, Israelites, are plowing through these nations.
00:52:43.840 | So they gather 13 versus one.
00:52:46.280 | Oh no, what should we do, right?
00:52:48.200 | Well, God says to Joshua in Joshua 11.6,
00:52:52.320 | the Lord said, "Do not be afraid because of them.
00:52:56.280 | "For tomorrow at this time, I will deliver all of them
00:52:58.880 | "slain before Israel.
00:53:01.140 | "You shall hamstring their horses
00:53:03.540 | "and burn their chariots with fire."
00:53:06.360 | Now I didn't know what hamstring their horses meant.
00:53:09.660 | Hamstring is just behind your thigh.
00:53:12.320 | And so I looked it up.
00:53:13.160 | I didn't know that it was a thing
00:53:15.360 | where in an act of complete ownership,
00:53:18.440 | or I guess you could say complete victory,
00:53:20.840 | in order that they can't even try
00:53:22.680 | to have some kind of retaliation or counterattack,
00:53:26.200 | what they would do is cut the tendons
00:53:28.240 | of the horse's back leg right at the hamstring
00:53:31.360 | so that they could never recover.
00:53:32.540 | It doesn't grow back.
00:53:33.820 | What's crazy about that is literally
00:53:36.640 | in just a couple verses later, in verse eight and nine,
00:53:39.160 | the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel
00:53:42.240 | so that they defeated them and pursued them
00:53:44.240 | as far as great Sidon and Mithripothim
00:53:48.000 | and Valley of Mithspeth to the east.
00:53:50.680 | And they struck them until no survivor was left to them.
00:53:54.020 | Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him.
00:53:56.960 | He hamstrung their horses
00:53:59.120 | and burned their chariots with fire.
00:54:01.800 | To the T, it's gonna happen.
00:54:05.460 | And it happened.
00:54:06.300 | So the reason why I bring this up
00:54:09.260 | is because we have to have in our day
00:54:13.240 | this level of confidence.
00:54:15.300 | What the Lord says is not going to kinda happen.
00:54:18.540 | What the Lord says is not going to,
00:54:20.220 | yeah, generically, the big things,
00:54:22.420 | but not the little things.
00:54:23.600 | Because in your life, what are the big things
00:54:25.940 | and the little things that you trust God with?
00:54:28.180 | They all matter.
00:54:30.580 | Question, you have this kind of confidence?
00:54:34.320 | Not a single word of the Lord will fail me.
00:54:38.060 | And then also, do you have that kind of testimony?
00:54:41.760 | What's gonna keep us from saying no
00:54:46.120 | to all these temptations, distractions, allurements,
00:54:49.460 | the things that look good and valuable and fine on earth?
00:54:52.400 | Is our own story.
00:54:54.580 | You know what?
00:54:56.140 | The Lord has been so good.
00:54:59.220 | He has sustained me.
00:55:00.940 | And even in moments when I was younger
00:55:03.860 | and completely a delinquent juvenile,
00:55:06.620 | and in the moments when I was sinful,
00:55:09.340 | he redeemed me.
00:55:11.060 | And every time I was afraid,
00:55:12.500 | some of you have these testimonies.
00:55:14.300 | You know, I was so afraid to confess.
00:55:16.420 | I was so afraid to turn to God.
00:55:18.320 | But I was so afraid of nothing
00:55:20.180 | because once I did it,
00:55:21.700 | the word of God was real and true.
00:55:25.420 | I felt peace.
00:55:27.180 | I felt acceptance.
00:55:28.780 | I felt freedom.
00:55:30.020 | I felt liberty.
00:55:31.340 | What was I afraid of?
00:55:32.660 | You know God is good.
00:55:36.020 | And that's gonna keep you from being swayed
00:55:38.940 | by all the allurements around us.
00:55:41.140 | But if there is temptation,
00:55:42.980 | Joshua continues the sermon by giving an intense warning.
00:55:46.980 | Let's continue to read.
00:55:48.760 | Reading the full section now in Joshua,
00:55:50.860 | the middle section, verse 12 down to verse 16.
00:55:54.060 | This is what he says.
00:55:55.900 | For if you ever go back and cling
00:55:58.380 | to the rest of these nations,
00:56:00.560 | these which remain among you and intermarry with them,
00:56:03.660 | and you associate with them,
00:56:05.140 | and they with you,
00:56:06.980 | know with certainty that the Lord your God
00:56:10.140 | will not continue to drive these nations out
00:56:12.340 | from before you,
00:56:13.640 | but they will be a snare and a trap to you,
00:56:16.200 | and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes
00:56:18.740 | until you perish from off this good land
00:56:21.100 | which the Lord your God has given you.
00:56:23.540 | Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth,
00:56:26.780 | and you know in all your hearts,
00:56:28.480 | in all your souls,
00:56:29.380 | that not one of the word of all the good words
00:56:32.320 | which the Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed.
00:56:35.900 | All have been fulfilled for you.
00:56:37.380 | Not one of them has failed.
00:56:39.140 | It shall come about that just as all the good words
00:56:41.620 | which the Lord your God spoke to you have come upon you,
00:56:44.220 | so the Lord will bring upon you all the threats
00:56:48.620 | until he has destroyed you from all his good land
00:56:51.520 | which the Lord your God has given you.
00:56:53.640 | When you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God
00:56:56.340 | which he commanded you,
00:56:57.320 | and go and serve other gods and bow down to them,
00:57:00.360 | then the anger of the Lord will burn against you,
00:57:03.840 | and you will perish quickly from off the good land
00:57:07.160 | which he has given you.
00:57:08.880 | Wow.
00:57:10.400 | That is one intense warning.
00:57:12.880 | If you ever,
00:57:14.300 | after how good,
00:57:16.440 | and you know how good he's been to you,
00:57:19.360 | look back with this fancy daydreaming,
00:57:22.840 | like, oh, I wonder,
00:57:25.000 | I wonder if I go back to when I wasn't Christian,
00:57:28.080 | when I was ambitious for the world,
00:57:30.200 | when I had more freedoms,
00:57:32.640 | kind of like the prodigal son,
00:57:33.760 | I'm gonna take my inheritance and go.
00:57:35.560 | I wonder what I could do if I just let my own wings fly.
00:57:39.100 | He says, you're tempted with that?
00:57:43.200 | Know this day that every single promise
00:57:46.480 | just as how it's come true for the good,
00:57:49.820 | the promise that will come true for the bad
00:57:52.560 | will be certain,
00:57:54.120 | and God's anger will burn against you.
00:57:56.440 | Like, I don't have the words to describe,
00:58:00.480 | and we feel it,
00:58:01.380 | but we don't have the words to adequately describe
00:58:03.560 | how scary it is
00:58:05.000 | to be underneath the wrath of God,
00:58:09.240 | to know with certainty, with precision,
00:58:13.120 | God will look upon you with anger
00:58:16.360 | versus grace.
00:58:17.700 | That's incredible.
00:58:20.400 | Now, I asked this question when I was doing the devotions.
00:58:25.240 | Whoa, this is such a turn in tone.
00:58:28.920 | Like, shouldn't, right?
00:58:31.440 | Like, if you do the meditation on this thought,
00:58:33.360 | like, they just had battle,
00:58:35.240 | and then they got together because overall,
00:58:37.880 | overall, they were faithful.
00:58:39.920 | And he says it, you obeyed.
00:58:41.580 | When I told you to destroy them utterly,
00:58:43.640 | you destroyed them.
00:58:44.960 | There were a couple moments, no,
00:58:46.200 | but they destroyed them.
00:58:47.400 | You did this, you did that,
00:58:48.520 | and then so shouldn't they come together
00:58:50.160 | and just do, thank you, Lord,
00:58:52.120 | we accept with gratitude.
00:58:54.120 | Thank you, thank you.
00:58:55.560 | Good job, everyone.
00:58:56.860 | What is this, like, grumpy old man just,
00:59:02.160 | oh, God's gonna judge you
00:59:04.920 | if you even think about going back.
00:59:08.280 | Is he just being a grumpy old man?
00:59:10.420 | Is he just being a hard-nosed general?
00:59:15.960 | There are those guys out there
00:59:17.680 | who are just hard-loved guys
00:59:20.200 | who every moment, it's like,
00:59:21.720 | how dare you even think about it, right?
00:59:25.360 | And it's all warning and brimstone
00:59:27.620 | and heavy, heavy wrath.
00:59:28.920 | It's not.
00:59:30.920 | The reason why it's not is because
00:59:33.360 | through Joshua, God is shepherding their souls.
00:59:38.020 | And through Joshua today,
00:59:39.160 | God is shepherding our souls.
00:59:41.560 | The reality of the warning,
00:59:45.080 | the wisdom behind the warning,
00:59:49.520 | is that this is true.
00:59:51.200 | We are duped to think that sometimes we sin
00:59:55.080 | and there are no consequences,
00:59:56.760 | but God is very, very clear.
00:59:59.360 | In your own experience of joy,
01:00:01.720 | occupying his promises,
01:00:03.560 | in your personal experience with God,
01:00:06.680 | there are consequences to every act
01:00:08.760 | and every decision.
01:00:11.240 | So what's best for you is to remember
01:00:13.960 | to be with this good God and to walk with him
01:00:17.840 | is literally your best.
01:00:19.860 | And the scariest, scariest thing
01:00:22.240 | is to be tempted by the world.
01:00:24.280 | And so what do I mean by God is shepherding our soul?
01:00:27.760 | When God is talking through Joshua to the people,
01:00:31.880 | he said, "I want you to gather
01:00:33.120 | "and I want you to gather in this place.
01:00:35.580 | "You will see how God is shepherding them in wisdom.
01:00:39.240 | "I want you, my children, to make wise decisions
01:00:44.240 | "and to be decided in your heart."
01:00:46.520 | Let me show you.
01:00:47.880 | By walking through the next portion of his sermon,
01:00:50.720 | Joshua says in chapter 24, verse one through 13,
01:00:55.160 | "The kind of shepherding that God has already done."
01:00:57.720 | God has a loving history with these people.
01:01:01.280 | Let's take a look and read.
01:01:02.960 | Chapter 24, starting from verse one.
01:01:05.320 | "Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem
01:01:08.720 | "and called the elders of Israel for their heads
01:01:11.860 | "and their judges and their officers,
01:01:14.100 | "and they presented themselves before God."
01:01:17.120 | Notice how it's they presented themselves before God.
01:01:20.660 | Verse two, "Joshua said to all the people,
01:01:23.180 | "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you."
01:01:26.600 | Okay.
01:01:27.440 | Real fast.
01:01:29.380 | What Joshua is doing here is gathering these people
01:01:33.500 | in a very particular place for a very particular reason.
01:01:37.860 | And that reason is because this place, Shechem,
01:01:40.260 | Shechem is a significant place
01:01:43.480 | both of blessing and of decision.
01:01:45.360 | So if you are in the habit of highlighting your Bible,
01:01:48.580 | et cetera, Shechem is a place you wanna know,
01:01:50.760 | or just take note on it, that Shechem is the place
01:01:53.880 | in Joshua, sorry, in Genesis chapter 12,
01:01:56.760 | when God gave promise to Abraham and said,
01:01:59.460 | "I am going to give you offspring.
01:02:01.360 | "I will give you land."
01:02:03.020 | This was the place.
01:02:04.880 | And so because that was a place of blessing
01:02:07.040 | in Genesis 15, if you remember,
01:02:09.800 | Abraham sets up a monument.
01:02:11.400 | It sets up an altar and says,
01:02:12.620 | "I need to remember this place," right?
01:02:15.280 | Because it will live as a testimony to me.
01:02:17.920 | But what's more, in Deuteronomy,
01:02:19.600 | when Moses, the great leader, is setting before the nation,
01:02:22.840 | "I want you to understand.
01:02:25.100 | "Be wise, everyone.
01:02:26.340 | "Choose wisely.
01:02:27.660 | "God wants to bless you, but there are also curses."
01:02:33.120 | Guess where they were hearing the law?
01:02:35.360 | In the valley of Shechem.
01:02:37.020 | Shechem is a valley between two mountains.
01:02:40.040 | On one side, it's called Mount Ebal.
01:02:43.560 | It just sounds bad, doesn't it?
01:02:45.240 | E-bal.
01:02:46.080 | Just sounds horrible.
01:02:48.820 | Guess what God did?
01:02:49.660 | He said, "I wanna do a demonstration."
01:02:52.000 | And so he had six of the tribes go on one mountain,
01:02:55.120 | and they proclaimed curses.
01:02:56.920 | "Cursed be the man who sets up idolatry.
01:02:59.860 | "Cursed be the man who gives incense.
01:03:02.080 | "Cursed be the man who offends his brother,"
01:03:04.320 | et cetera, et cetera.
01:03:05.380 | And the people were shouting, "Curse that man!
01:03:07.780 | "Curse that man!"
01:03:08.900 | And the priests down the middle of Shechem,
01:03:11.300 | the individuals, right, the one tribe,
01:03:13.340 | they were screaming, "Amen, amen, curses, curses!"
01:03:16.500 | And then God would set up the other side, Mount Gerizim.
01:03:19.940 | And he would say, "But blessing, if you abide in my way."
01:03:23.320 | Is God being an angry God who's just threatening you?
01:03:27.860 | No, he's shepherding them
01:03:32.020 | by not just telling them but showing them, "My people,
01:03:35.600 | "you can't stand on two mountains.
01:03:38.320 | "You think in your own wisdom, in your own way,
01:03:42.120 | "but maybe I could have both.
01:03:44.460 | "That guy had both.
01:03:45.640 | "He had wealth and riches and the spirit
01:03:47.880 | "and all this stuff.
01:03:48.820 | "Why can't I?
01:03:49.680 | "You can't sit there on two decisions.
01:03:52.220 | "Why can't I at least have a run with the world,
01:03:54.600 | "at least have some fun?
01:03:55.900 | "Why can't I take this journey and trip first?"
01:03:59.720 | And he says, "No, let me show you the wisdom
01:04:04.040 | "of the reality of the decision.
01:04:05.800 | "There's wrath and judgment here.
01:04:08.820 | "There's blessings here.
01:04:10.520 | "Where will you stand?
01:04:12.080 | "But what's more, to encourage and motivate your heart,
01:04:14.780 | "he's shepherding you.
01:04:16.640 | "But you know that when I guide you
01:04:19.960 | "and you know these commands and instructions and threats,
01:04:23.900 | "it's not coming from some random guy out on the street.
01:04:27.380 | "It's not coming from some guy
01:04:28.820 | "who should just mind his own business,
01:04:30.260 | "but he's just throwing, yelling,
01:04:32.920 | "hey, you should do that.
01:04:34.300 | "Hey, you should do this.
01:04:35.340 | "No, it's your good shepherd."
01:04:38.140 | Why do I say this?
01:04:39.340 | As I read the next section,
01:04:41.960 | I'm gonna accentuate how God is speaking to them,
01:04:44.980 | saying, "Look what I've done for you."
01:04:47.180 | So let me read on.
01:04:48.660 | God says to all of Israel,
01:04:50.500 | gathered together in the Valley of Shechem,
01:04:53.180 | "From ancient time, your fathers lived beyond the river,
01:04:55.920 | "namely Terah, the father of Abraham,
01:04:59.160 | "and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods.
01:05:03.680 | "Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the river
01:05:08.140 | "and led him through all the land of Canaan.
01:05:11.060 | "And I multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.
01:05:15.200 | "To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau,
01:05:18.000 | "and to Esau I gave the Mount Seir to possess it.
01:05:21.700 | "But Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
01:05:24.500 | "Then I sent Moses and Aaron,
01:05:26.640 | "and I plagued Egypt by what I did in their midst.
01:05:29.440 | "And afterward, I brought you out.
01:05:33.000 | "I brought you, your fathers, out of Egypt,
01:05:35.960 | "and you came to the sea.
01:05:37.920 | "And Egypt pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen
01:05:40.720 | "to the Red Sea.
01:05:41.800 | "But when they cried out to the Lord,
01:05:44.140 | "He put darkness between you and the Egyptians,
01:05:47.120 | "and brought the sea upon them and covered them.
01:05:49.440 | "And your own eyes saw what I did in Egypt.
01:05:53.400 | "You lived in the wilderness for a long time."
01:05:56.320 | Now that's an understatement, that was a long time.
01:05:59.060 | "Then I brought you into the land of the Aramites
01:06:01.400 | "who lived beyond the Jordan, and they fought with you.
01:06:03.780 | "I gave them into your hand.
01:06:05.560 | "You took possession of their land,
01:06:07.100 | "and I destroyed them before you.
01:06:09.260 | "Then Balak and the son of Zipporah, king of Moab,
01:06:12.080 | "rose and fought against Israel.
01:06:15.260 | "He sent and summoned Balaam, the son of Beir, to curse you.
01:06:19.000 | "But I was not willing to listen to Balaam.
01:06:21.720 | "So he had to bless you, and I delivered you from his hand.
01:06:26.600 | "You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho,
01:06:29.160 | "and the citizens of Jericho fought against you,
01:06:31.260 | "and the Amorite and the Perizzite,
01:06:33.240 | "and the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Gerrishite,
01:06:36.000 | "the Hivite and the Jebusite.
01:06:37.740 | "Thus I gave them into your hand.
01:06:39.980 | "I sent the hornet before you,
01:06:41.900 | "and it drove out the two kings of the Amorites
01:06:45.720 | "from before you.
01:06:47.360 | "But not by your sword or your bow.
01:06:49.980 | "I gave you a land on which you had not labored,
01:06:54.160 | "and cities on which you did not build,
01:06:56.760 | "and you have lived in them.
01:06:58.160 | "You are eating of vineyards and olive grove
01:07:00.200 | "which you did not plant."
01:07:02.400 | I read that section because clearly what God was saying was,
01:07:08.940 | "I need you to understand what's really happening."
01:07:13.640 | Sometimes we get so defensive, like,
01:07:15.940 | "Oh, why is he getting so intense?
01:07:17.840 | "And why are there threats?
01:07:20.120 | "Is he just manipulating me?"
01:07:22.400 | But no, you are being given real, genuine wisdom
01:07:28.360 | and warning from a God who is our perfect shepherd.
01:07:33.520 | Isn't that what it sounds like?
01:07:34.620 | Just like a shepherd, I lead you and brought you,
01:07:37.060 | and I brought you to pastures,
01:07:38.800 | a pastures that you did not plant,
01:07:40.240 | and then I brought you to safety,
01:07:41.680 | and when you're in danger, I protected you.
01:07:43.800 | God is our shepherd.
01:07:46.480 | So if anything, as we hear the sermon of Joshua
01:07:48.680 | this morning, I wanted your heart to be thankful.
01:07:52.120 | Anytime you hear a good instruction from God,
01:07:56.680 | know that it comes from your great and perfect shepherd.
01:07:59.440 | Amen?
01:08:00.560 | But also, anytime you hear harsh rebuke,
01:08:04.800 | warning and correction,
01:08:06.080 | and it looks like he's just shaking you up, thank God.
01:08:10.400 | Thank God and say, "God, we confess together.
01:08:14.620 | "We are hard of hearing.
01:08:16.520 | "Sometimes I hear stuff and I'm like,
01:08:18.000 | "Oh yeah, good, good, but I don't really get it.
01:08:20.760 | "Sometimes I think I got it and I really don't
01:08:23.320 | "because in application, I don't follow through.
01:08:25.780 | "Sometimes I think I get it and I try to follow through,
01:08:28.400 | "and then I make a bundle of it.
01:08:30.000 | "So many ways your instructions can go wrong,
01:08:32.680 | "and sometimes I'm just slow.
01:08:36.400 | "Sometimes I'm defensive.
01:08:37.800 | "But thank you, God, that you reason with us.
01:08:42.100 | "You tell us and you show us."
01:08:43.920 | Amen?
01:08:45.240 | But that's what he's doing in saying people.
01:08:48.380 | It wasn't even just this time,
01:08:50.500 | but every time he sent the prophet,
01:08:51.940 | remember Elijah on Mount Carmel, 1 Kings?
01:08:55.480 | How long will you waver between two things?
01:08:58.920 | If Baal seems like God to you, then do it.
01:09:02.100 | But if God is mighty, then follow him.
01:09:07.840 | You can't sit there straddling two fences.
01:09:11.420 | And God says, "Because of this pivotal moment,"
01:09:14.060 | and it's pivotal because they had victory,
01:09:17.800 | and now then perhaps they were more susceptible
01:09:21.020 | to danger and threat.
01:09:22.260 | "I need to know that you will choose and cling to God."
01:09:28.180 | And so that's what Joshua says.
01:09:30.420 | Verse 14 through 15, chapter 24.
01:09:33.340 | "Now therefore, upon hearing how God has been shepherding you
01:09:37.620 | "and shepherding the flock and all your souls,
01:09:40.940 | "fear the Lord, serve him in sincerity and truth,
01:09:43.740 | "and put away the gods which your father served
01:09:45.960 | "beyond the river in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
01:09:49.220 | "If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord,
01:09:51.660 | "choose for yourself today whom you will serve,
01:09:55.880 | "whether the gods which your father served,
01:09:58.060 | "which were beyond the river,
01:09:59.640 | "or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living.
01:10:02.600 | "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
01:10:08.100 | This is a famous and epic portion of scripture,
01:10:11.260 | and we wanna heed it in the right way.
01:10:15.380 | We want to understand that God desires us
01:10:18.500 | to yes, make a decisive conclusion.
01:10:22.540 | God has been good to me,
01:10:24.100 | and to anything that takes me away from my Lord,
01:10:28.020 | anything that makes me feel a little far from my Savior,
01:10:31.900 | it's utter trash, and I need to put it away.
01:10:36.520 | And we may have excuses, we may have reasons,
01:10:39.700 | but I'm scared, I don't know how it's gonna work out,
01:10:43.140 | I don't know exactly how to plan,
01:10:46.140 | I don't know if I'm in the end actually gonna be safe,
01:10:48.580 | et cetera, et cetera.
01:10:50.300 | He wants us to deal with those worries,
01:10:54.140 | reservations, excuses, and be willing to say,
01:10:58.420 | "I will put away anything else
01:11:00.360 | "that does not contribute to me serving my God."
01:11:04.220 | You know, as a comment on what he's saying,
01:11:07.880 | he's saying when you choose to serve God
01:11:10.580 | in sincerity and truth, truth by nature is exclusive.
01:11:15.120 | If truth is truth and it's right, then this is false.
01:11:18.980 | And likewise, he's saying,
01:11:21.400 | there is a principle of separation.
01:11:23.300 | God challenges you and me.
01:11:26.160 | When we think about things like washing, renewal, revival,
01:11:30.560 | what that means is any element of our lives
01:11:34.220 | that is of our previous flesh,
01:11:36.220 | that is in contradiction to God,
01:11:38.300 | I volitionally, I have to put that away.
01:11:41.920 | And as a case example of this,
01:11:44.860 | continuing to reason with us,
01:11:47.260 | did you notice here there's actually
01:11:48.940 | three main individuals that's talked about?
01:11:51.320 | There's the idea of Abraham
01:11:52.740 | coming out of the Ur of Chaldeans,
01:11:55.140 | there's Moses in Egypt,
01:11:56.700 | and here and now there's Joshua and the people.
01:11:59.500 | I want you to think about this.
01:12:01.400 | God called Abraham because he was a righteous man?
01:12:04.820 | No, he came from the land, basically,
01:12:07.860 | which is now Southeast Saudi Arabia, okay?
01:12:11.340 | He comes from the civilization of the Sumers.
01:12:14.720 | They were pagan individuals believing
01:12:16.600 | in the pantheon of God's worshiping animals.
01:12:20.480 | What did he say?
01:12:21.480 | Come out, I call you.
01:12:24.080 | And he had to cross the Euphrates River
01:12:26.240 | to come all the way from his people
01:12:28.160 | to now enter into this land.
01:12:30.080 | Same thing for Moses.
01:12:31.480 | He's in Egypt.
01:12:32.720 | He gets accustomed to the traditions,
01:12:35.560 | the religions of the people.
01:12:37.720 | What do they have to do?
01:12:38.560 | They have to pass through the Red Sea.
01:12:40.920 | God miraculously splits open the sea,
01:12:42.980 | people walk through.
01:12:44.360 | The people now in Joshua's time,
01:12:46.260 | they go from the wilderness
01:12:47.680 | and they have to cross the what?
01:12:49.160 | The Jordan, the second splitting of the sea, so to speak.
01:12:52.080 | Jordan splits wide open, the ground is dry,
01:12:54.360 | they walk through.
01:12:55.880 | Anybody in here now,
01:12:57.360 | I don't know every single struggle you have.
01:12:59.600 | It could be something you know is compromise,
01:13:03.280 | it could be something you know is very, very tempting.
01:13:06.800 | God is saying cross the river.
01:13:08.440 | You cannot sit in the middle of the water
01:13:11.800 | and hope it works out.
01:13:12.700 | I will crush you.
01:13:13.840 | Separation is a theme in the scripture
01:13:18.800 | that we know is true, but it's hard.
01:13:22.800 | It's difficult.
01:13:23.720 | I wanna challenge you,
01:13:26.080 | just like this passage is challenging us.
01:13:28.760 | You have to make a very personal decision.
01:13:31.560 | If there are things in your life keeping you from God,
01:13:35.880 | making you feel far from him,
01:13:37.680 | you have to decide, as for me,
01:13:40.240 | not based on what everybody else is,
01:13:42.880 | as for me, I choose to serve the Lord.
01:13:46.080 | That's power.
01:13:47.620 | You could be a 15-year-old youth group student in here.
01:13:50.480 | You can pre-decide in your heart,
01:13:52.240 | you know the stuff to come.
01:13:53.800 | Everything that tempts us is common to man.
01:13:55.760 | You know your classmates is gonna tempt you
01:13:57.720 | to roll with them.
01:13:58.880 | Once you get into college, you know the temptations to come.
01:14:01.600 | Once you get into working life,
01:14:03.360 | you know the temptations to come.
01:14:04.960 | When you have expendable cash,
01:14:06.600 | when you have various privileges,
01:14:09.720 | when you're later on in life,
01:14:12.820 | the temptations don't necessarily become new
01:14:15.800 | and profound, et cetera,
01:14:17.220 | but it's powerful if you have a pre-determined decision
01:14:22.080 | in your heart, I am going to serve the Lord.
01:14:25.340 | For me, as I was meditating on that, I think,
01:14:27.600 | I had this thought that in my own personality,
01:14:30.920 | I do find safety in being around others who make decisions.
01:14:36.920 | I am content to have others make strong decisions for me
01:14:41.280 | so that it looks safe and then I will do it.
01:14:44.320 | But Joshua gives us an example.
01:14:48.680 | He says, you know what?
01:14:50.600 | As for me and my household,
01:14:53.120 | it's not as though my decision is contingent upon you
01:14:56.020 | or the people following me or anybody else.
01:14:58.520 | As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
01:15:03.460 | You choose.
01:15:04.300 | Don't be passive.
01:15:07.500 | Don't look for safety surrounded by like,
01:15:09.580 | let me see at least first what that guy does.
01:15:12.420 | Did it work out for that guy?
01:15:14.460 | No, he wants you to make a strong decision.
01:15:17.700 | What's incredibly interesting about this sermon
01:15:20.940 | is there is a response from the people.
01:15:23.580 | As a narrative, you see how the people respond to his call.
01:15:27.600 | Let's take a look, verse 16.
01:15:29.220 | The people answered and said,
01:15:32.840 | far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord
01:15:35.540 | to serve other gods, for the Lord our God
01:15:38.260 | is he who brought us and our fathers up
01:15:41.320 | out of the land of Egypt from the house's bondage
01:15:44.860 | and who did these great signs in our sight
01:15:46.800 | and preserved us through all the way in which we went
01:15:49.640 | among all the peoples through whose midst we passed.
01:15:53.300 | The Lord drove out from before us all the peoples,
01:15:56.100 | even the Amorites who lived in the land.
01:15:58.420 | We also will serve the Lord for he is our God.
01:16:02.100 | Now when you look at their words, when they say,
01:16:05.600 | far be it from us to do stuff like that,
01:16:08.860 | we will serve the Lord.
01:16:10.300 | Does that automatically make you feel a little weird?
01:16:13.880 | Kind of the feeling of like, I don't know, you guys,
01:16:18.540 | I've read the next book, you know?
01:16:21.240 | I don't know, you guys, it feels a little overconfident.
01:16:24.700 | Let me just say at first, it is an encouragement
01:16:28.120 | to see the people respond this way
01:16:30.340 | and say we will serve the Lord.
01:16:32.980 | That's something good.
01:16:34.280 | I think you and I actually live in fear these days.
01:16:38.180 | So many people are afraid of making any commitment,
01:16:41.360 | and I know why.
01:16:42.860 | You don't wanna look silly because you couldn't do it.
01:16:45.900 | You don't wanna say stuff that you might not have
01:16:48.060 | the power to fulfill.
01:16:49.780 | It's a good thing.
01:16:50.620 | The bad thing is when they completely lose sight
01:16:54.180 | of their track record, when they have too much
01:16:56.420 | self-confidence, when they say things like,
01:16:58.540 | oh, far be it from us that we would ever do this,
01:17:02.080 | we also know not the next book but the previous book.
01:17:05.820 | What in the world are we talking about here?
01:17:08.140 | If you recall in Joshua chapter one,
01:17:10.420 | when Joshua gave a similar sermon,
01:17:12.500 | the people said we will obey all that you command us
01:17:15.580 | just as we obeyed Moses in all the things,
01:17:18.540 | so we will obey you.
01:17:20.140 | Just as you obeyed Moses, what are you talking about?
01:17:24.500 | And so what's really interesting is we have this paradox
01:17:29.260 | in our Christian life.
01:17:30.820 | No confidence in the flesh means I know actually
01:17:33.380 | I can sin at every turn.
01:17:34.960 | I can sin on the way down from an amazing retreat.
01:17:39.840 | I can sin in the moment of weakness when I'm even
01:17:43.020 | like having done my devotions, et cetera, et cetera.
01:17:46.060 | I am susceptible, yes?
01:17:48.180 | But that does not preclude me from saying
01:17:52.140 | by what God has commanded me, I will obey.
01:17:54.700 | We're gonna talk about that, but Joshua's response
01:17:59.020 | to the people is actually pretty shocking,
01:18:02.260 | and this is what he says.
01:18:03.520 | Joshua, knowing his people, he says this.
01:18:08.380 | Then Joshua said, you will not be able to serve the Lord,
01:18:13.380 | for he is a holy God.
01:18:15.620 | He is a jealous God.
01:18:17.420 | He will not forgive your transgression or your sins.
01:18:20.420 | If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods,
01:18:23.660 | then he will turn and do you harm and consume you
01:18:28.260 | after he has done good to you.
01:18:30.740 | Whoa.
01:18:31.580 | What's really interesting about that,
01:18:34.140 | the way I take it is the people say,
01:18:36.700 | you know what, Joshua, we hear you.
01:18:38.660 | We're here in the valley and we get it.
01:18:40.700 | Curses and blessings, we choose blessings.
01:18:43.020 | We'll serve the Lord, and Joshua goes, no, you won't.
01:18:46.780 | But what Joshua's really saying is not like that.
01:18:52.100 | Not like that.
01:18:54.420 | Joshua clearly is seeing the people and saying,
01:18:58.180 | I know you, I see you.
01:18:59.900 | You can't worship God on your terms.
01:19:03.780 | You can't worship God just showing up,
01:19:05.580 | giving whatever you want.
01:19:06.900 | You can't, 'cause there is a moment right before
01:19:10.140 | this happens when the two nations,
01:19:12.300 | it's two and a half nations,
01:19:13.820 | that were on the other side of the Jordan,
01:19:15.900 | they actually set up an altar,
01:19:17.820 | and the people are like, what are you doing?
01:19:20.860 | God told us to come together,
01:19:22.620 | and we have the altar of Shiloh.
01:19:24.740 | What are you doing?
01:19:26.300 | You're gonna bring judgment on us.
01:19:28.500 | What are you gonna do, like burn something on there?
01:19:31.580 | Now, thank God that actually,
01:19:33.380 | there's a moment of potential civil war.
01:19:35.460 | They say, no, no, no, no, no.
01:19:36.860 | We were just setting this up so that we never forget
01:19:39.660 | what's happened here.
01:19:40.740 | Okay, okay.
01:19:41.580 | But what I'm saying is,
01:19:44.580 | there is this weird thought that like,
01:19:46.700 | I can just set up stuff, and God will accept my offering.
01:19:51.060 | What I mean, and I think what Joshua's getting at,
01:19:56.060 | is there is this thought that yes, we will serve God,
01:19:58.500 | but then there's always been this strange assumption
01:20:01.220 | that I can serve God in whichever way,
01:20:03.500 | or to the best of my ability,
01:20:06.020 | I can just offer this, and he'll just accept it.
01:20:08.420 | And when Joshua says, no, no, no, he is holy,
01:20:12.380 | that's exactly what he's saying, right?
01:20:14.060 | God is a holy God that we do not just approach him
01:20:17.940 | in any which way we presume,
01:20:20.260 | and this idea that come just as you are,
01:20:22.820 | no matter what you did yesterday,
01:20:24.340 | no matter what's in your heart now, just come,
01:20:26.780 | that's a falsehood.
01:20:28.180 | He's holy, and his holiness will consume you.
01:20:33.740 | You don't treat God like one of your hobbies,
01:20:35.860 | one of your pets, and that is the sad state of affairs
01:20:40.020 | in our day where we presume that God is okay
01:20:44.020 | just as long as at least I carve out this moment for him.
01:20:48.700 | But to me, that's kind of like saying,
01:20:50.660 | well, my dog needs a walk every so often, so I'll do it.
01:20:53.660 | That's not God.
01:20:55.820 | And so what Joshua's saying is, you can't do it like that.
01:21:00.940 | You can't have him as one of your loves.
01:21:04.180 | You can't have him as one of the many things
01:21:06.740 | that you hold dear and near to your heart and you value.
01:21:10.620 | He's gotta be holy in you.
01:21:13.300 | Now, let me paint the scenario for you.
01:21:16.540 | So imagine this scene with me.
01:21:18.780 | To liken it to this scenario would be to liken it
01:21:22.780 | to, let's say, an intense football game,
01:21:25.980 | let's say the Super Bowl.
01:21:28.500 | The coach, he is a veteran coach.
01:21:32.420 | He's been through game after game,
01:21:34.420 | and he's looking at his team.
01:21:35.660 | It's fourth quarter, there's two minutes left.
01:21:38.060 | It's down to the wire.
01:21:39.060 | They're only down by six, so he has this moment
01:21:41.820 | with his team, and he says, hey, everybody, all eyes on me.
01:21:45.900 | And so everybody has to come, right?
01:21:47.420 | That's exactly what happened.
01:21:48.380 | Joshua says, everybody, come to the valley,
01:21:50.940 | and so everybody had to come.
01:21:52.420 | From young and old, leader or follower, everybody came.
01:21:56.180 | And just like a good coach would look at his team and says,
01:21:58.700 | I know you guys have been running out there.
01:22:00.700 | I know you guys have been doing a good job,
01:22:02.900 | but do you want this?
01:22:05.460 | Do you wanna win?
01:22:06.620 | And the team goes, yeah, we wanna win.
01:22:09.740 | Do you wanna win?
01:22:10.740 | Yeah, we wanna win.
01:22:12.380 | Kind of similar, right?
01:22:14.580 | And then the players are like, that's right.
01:22:17.460 | They're getting all hyped up, saying, we're gonna win.
01:22:19.740 | We're gonna win.
01:22:20.620 | And the coach says, no, you won't.
01:22:24.740 | And everyone's sitting there like, what's going on?
01:22:27.500 | Why is he screaming at us?
01:22:30.140 | Man, and you could get defensive at that moment.
01:22:34.740 | Man, I'm bruised all over.
01:22:36.300 | I've been running so hard.
01:22:37.740 | I've been taking hits.
01:22:39.060 | I've been making blocks that I'm not even supposed to.
01:22:41.620 | Why is this guy yelling at us, telling us we won't win?
01:22:44.340 | And the coach says, you're not gonna win like that,
01:22:48.260 | you won't, 'cause I see you.
01:22:50.500 | I see some of you guys.
01:22:53.660 | You guys aren't dedicated to win.
01:22:55.020 | You guys are sitting there complaining
01:22:56.620 | about how the play stinks
01:22:57.900 | and how you're not getting enough passes.
01:23:00.340 | You're sitting there competing with each other.
01:23:02.540 | Who's better, who's better?
01:23:03.900 | Some of you guys are over there celebrating
01:23:05.420 | when you're not even winning yet.
01:23:07.500 | Why are you over there celebrating?
01:23:09.460 | Some of you guys are over here all distracted on your phones
01:23:11.660 | and all you do is stay on your phone on the bench.
01:23:13.620 | Even if you're on the bench, stay in the game.
01:23:16.100 | Some of you are staring at cheerleaders.
01:23:18.260 | What's wrong with you?
01:23:20.100 | You can't win like that.
01:23:22.980 | But that's kind of what he's saying.
01:23:25.020 | Some of you guys are so distracted
01:23:28.180 | and he says, you guys are saying you wanna win,
01:23:33.780 | but you can't serve God like that.
01:23:35.860 | That's not the decision I was asking for,
01:23:39.420 | where you say, okay, I'll show up.
01:23:41.700 | No, I want you to win.
01:23:43.220 | Look at this next portion of the scriptures in verse 21.
01:23:48.300 | The people say to Joshua, no, no, no, no, we'll do it,
01:23:50.940 | we'll serve the Lord.
01:23:52.220 | And then Joshua says, you are witnesses against yourself
01:23:55.860 | that you have chosen for yourself the Lord to serve him.
01:23:58.900 | And they said, yeah, we are witnesses.
01:24:01.500 | Now, therefore, put away the foreign gods
01:24:04.180 | which are in your, where?
01:24:06.580 | In your midst.
01:24:08.500 | It has been the plight of the nation
01:24:10.740 | that every time they came out,
01:24:13.100 | somebody had to steal a little icon, idol,
01:24:16.780 | or false thing and hide it in their tent.
01:24:21.700 | And they save it like hoarders who can't clear their garage.
01:24:24.940 | It's just, maybe one day, someday it'll help me.

01:28:04.860 | about this passage?
01:28:06.900 | They said, we will serve the Lord.
01:28:09.240 | And in order to commemorate that, what did they do?
01:28:11.620 | They took a stone, a large stone,

01:28:18.980 | not set up by the tools of men
01:28:22.740 | because just to signify that this is a God thing.
