00:25:41.260 | that I might not even be able to comprehend.
00:25:43.260 | I ended up praying and crying
00:25:45.260 | with both of my parents,
00:25:47.260 | realizing for the first time
00:25:49.260 | the sheer magnitude of God's grace and mercy for me.
00:25:52.260 | Since then, it has been a long few months.
00:25:56.260 | I still sin,
00:26:00.260 | but I found myself to genuinely repent,
00:26:03.260 | turning to Christ in everyday spontaneous prayer,
00:26:06.260 | more willing to submit to authorities,
00:26:08.260 | a growing desire to know more
00:26:10.260 | about the great God who saved me,
00:26:12.260 | and the heart to come to church with humility
00:26:15.260 | because I don't have the right answers.
00:26:17.260 | I only have the right vocabulary.
00:26:19.260 | I am so grateful to all the people
00:26:21.260 | who worked in my life.
00:26:23.260 | Thank you for coming alongside me
00:26:26.260 | and supporting me,
00:26:30.260 | whether through prayer,
00:26:32.260 | taking me out to dinner,
00:26:34.260 | just talking to me when I needed it,
00:26:36.260 | and simply being good Christian influences
00:26:38.260 | in the ways that you live.
00:26:40.260 | I will always be so grateful for you.
00:26:42.260 | A verse that I would like to leave with you
00:26:47.260 | is Romans 8, 38-39,
00:26:49.260 | for I am convinced that neither death nor life,
00:26:51.260 | nor angels nor principalities,
00:26:53.260 | nor things to come, nor things present,
00:26:55.260 | nor powers nor height, nor death,
00:26:57.260 | nor any other created thing,
00:26:59.260 | will be able to separate us from the love of God,
00:27:02.260 | which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
00:27:04.260 | This verse is a constant reminder to me
00:27:06.260 | that I am not only loved
00:27:08.260 | and given a new and completely filling purpose in Christ,
00:27:11.260 | but I am also called to remember
00:27:14.260 | that it's only through God's grace
00:27:16.260 | that I am able to have these things.
00:27:18.260 | Thank you.
00:27:20.260 | [applause]
00:27:22.260 | Do you understand when you go into the water
00:27:40.260 | you're being united to Christ's death?
00:27:42.260 | When you're coming out,
00:27:43.260 | you're being united to his resurrected life?
00:27:45.260 | At that time, do you remember the Father?
00:27:47.260 | The Son?
00:27:49.260 | [silence]
00:27:51.260 | [applause]
00:27:56.260 | All right. Thank you, Ellie.
00:28:11.260 | And we're so proud of you.
00:28:13.260 | Awesome.
00:28:15.260 | [silence]
00:28:17.260 | Luke chapter 9,
00:28:23.260 | verses 7 through 11.
00:28:25.260 | Luke chapter 9, verses 7 through 11.
00:28:29.260 | Reading out of the NASB.
00:28:35.260 | "Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening,
00:28:40.260 | and he was greatly perplexed,
00:28:42.260 | because it was said by some
00:28:44.260 | that John had risen from the dead,
00:28:46.260 | and by some that Elijah had appeared,
00:28:48.260 | and by others that one of the prophets of old
00:28:50.260 | had risen again.
00:28:52.260 | Herod said, 'I myself and John
00:28:54.260 | had John beheaded,
00:28:56.260 | but who is this man
00:28:58.260 | about whom I hear such things?'
00:29:00.260 | And he kept trying to see him.
00:29:02.260 | When the apostles returned,
00:29:04.260 | they gave an account to him
00:29:06.260 | of all that they had done.
00:29:08.260 | Taking them with him,
00:29:10.260 | he withdrew by himself to a city called Bethsaida.
00:29:12.260 | When the gods were aware of this and followed him
00:29:14.260 | and welcoming them, he began speaking to them
00:29:16.260 | about the kingdom of God
00:29:18.260 | and curing those who had need of healing."
00:29:20.260 | Let's pray.
00:29:22.260 | Father, we pray for understanding,
00:29:27.260 | not simply the text,
00:29:29.260 | but your very heart.
00:29:31.260 | Help us, Lord God, to meet you,
00:29:33.260 | and not just the words.
00:29:35.260 | I pray that you would protect this pulpit,
00:29:38.260 | that only you and your word
00:29:40.260 | would be proclaimed. In Jesus' name we pray.
00:29:42.260 | Amen.
00:29:44.260 | I don't know if this has ever happened to you.
00:29:49.260 | How many of you had, in the middle of the night,
00:29:51.260 | be woken up by somebody at your door?
00:29:53.260 | Maybe two, three in the morning.
00:29:55.260 | Right? If they come and banging on your door.
00:29:57.260 | Right? Waking you up
00:29:59.260 | in the middle of the night.
00:30:01.260 | I know a lot of you guys have that ring camera,
00:30:03.260 | so you don't even have to go to the door anymore.
00:30:05.260 | You'll check your phone, and you're going to see,
00:30:07.260 | "Who is at my door?"
00:30:10.260 | Right? "Who is this at my door?"
00:30:12.260 | And so you're going to look at the camera,
00:30:14.260 | and you're going to see,
00:30:16.260 | and you don't recognize who this person is.
00:30:18.260 | Right?
00:30:20.260 | And so you're going to be asking a question.
00:30:22.260 | "Is this somebody at the door,
00:30:24.260 | trying to cause harm?"
00:30:26.260 | "Is this somebody who's trying to
00:30:28.260 | break into my house?"
00:30:30.260 | Right? "Or is it my neighbor,
00:30:32.260 | who maybe there's an emergency, and they need me to help them?"
00:30:34.260 | Right?
00:30:36.260 | "Or could it be an official,
00:30:38.260 | a police officer, or maybe a fire department?"
00:30:40.260 | "Maybe your house is on fire,
00:30:42.260 | and you need to hurry up and get out,
00:30:44.260 | so they're trying to come and save you."
00:30:46.260 | But you have to
00:30:48.260 | determine who they are.
00:30:50.260 | Right?
00:30:52.260 | One thing you cannot do is ignore it.
00:30:54.260 | Whether it is for good,
00:30:56.260 | whether it is for bad, you know that
00:30:58.260 | you need to be able to come to a decision,
00:31:00.260 | because how you
00:31:02.260 | respond to that person
00:31:04.260 | is going to be crucial.
00:31:06.260 | If you are in danger, and they're trying to
00:31:08.260 | warn you, you need to get out of that house.
00:31:10.260 | If somebody is trying to come and harm you,
00:31:12.260 | you need to protect yourself.
00:31:14.260 | You need to go call the authorities.
00:31:16.260 | But one thing that you cannot do
00:31:18.260 | is ignore that. You need to come to a
00:31:20.260 | conclusion.
00:31:22.260 | There's no other name
00:31:24.260 | in human history
00:31:26.260 | where we need to have an absolute
00:31:28.260 | clear determination
00:31:30.260 | of who this man is
00:31:32.260 | than the name of Jesus Christ.
00:31:34.260 | Because either
00:31:36.260 | he has been the biggest,
00:31:38.260 | biggest huckster
00:31:40.260 | who has deceived
00:31:42.260 | billions of people,
00:31:44.260 | affected every part of
00:31:46.260 | human existence since he came,
00:31:48.260 | or if he
00:31:50.260 | actually is the son of God,
00:31:52.260 | what did he say?
00:31:54.260 | Either way,
00:31:56.260 | it will radically
00:31:58.260 | determine what our life will look like.
00:32:00.260 | What you cannot do
00:32:02.260 | is simply ignore him.
00:32:04.260 | Up to this point,
00:32:06.260 | we've been studying how Jesus was
00:32:08.260 | presenting himself to his disciples,
00:32:10.260 | to the people, proving himself.
00:32:12.260 | He proved his power
00:32:14.260 | through his power over nature,
00:32:16.260 | he proved his power
00:32:18.260 | over disease, he proved his power
00:32:20.260 | over demons, and he
00:32:22.260 | ultimately proved his power even over death.
00:32:24.260 | He did all
00:32:26.260 | of that to prove his credential.
00:32:28.260 | Just like
00:32:30.260 | if somebody's at the door and you want to figure out
00:32:32.260 | and they say they're telling you
00:32:34.260 | they're a fireman, well, what's the proof?
00:32:36.260 | Maybe they'll show you the
00:32:38.260 | uniform, maybe they'll show you your credential,
00:32:40.260 | whatever it is that they may have,
00:32:42.260 | they're going to show it to you so that
00:32:44.260 | if they tell you that your house
00:32:46.260 | is on fire, you would take them seriously.
00:32:48.260 | But you have to determine
00:32:50.260 | that this is who they say they are.
00:32:52.260 | The Bible tells us that that's
00:32:54.260 | exactly what Jesus was doing.
00:32:56.260 | He performed these miracles
00:32:58.260 | not simply to feed them, not simply to
00:33:00.260 | wow people, but
00:33:02.260 | as a credential
00:33:04.260 | so that people recognize who he
00:33:06.260 | is and who he was.
00:33:08.260 | And the reason why his credential needed
00:33:10.260 | to be clear is so that
00:33:12.260 | they would pay attention to what he was saying.
00:33:14.260 | And we talked about that
00:33:16.260 | last week, he made it very clear.
00:33:18.260 | He says,
00:33:20.260 | at the end, he says he was going around, he
00:33:22.260 | commissioned his disciples, though, to go
00:33:24.260 | preach what? About the kingdom of God.
00:33:26.260 | So the
00:33:28.260 | central thing that he was doing was to preach
00:33:30.260 | about the kingdom of God. He said, John the Baptist
00:33:32.260 | came on the scene, he said, "Repent,
00:33:34.260 | and the reason why we need to repent
00:33:36.260 | not simply so that you don't go to
00:33:38.260 | hell, but because the kingdom of God
00:33:40.260 | is at hand. The reign of Christ
00:33:42.260 | has come. Repent,
00:33:44.260 | for the kingdom of God
00:33:46.260 | has come."
00:33:48.260 | And so,
00:33:50.260 | his primary reason why he
00:33:52.260 | performed everything, why he did everything
00:33:54.260 | was to prove his credential so
00:33:56.260 | that they would pay attention to what he had to
00:33:58.260 | say about the kingdom of God.
00:34:00.260 | This morning,
00:34:02.260 | Jesus is
00:34:04.260 | at the peak of his
00:34:06.260 | popularity.
00:34:08.260 | The next scene that we're going to see is the feeding
00:34:10.260 | of the 5,000, and
00:34:12.260 | from that moment on, Jesus begins
00:34:14.260 | to turn his attention to the cross,
00:34:16.260 | and his public ministry begins
00:34:18.260 | to diminish, and he begins to pay more
00:34:20.260 | attention to his disciples, so he's
00:34:22.260 | at the peak of his popularity.
00:34:24.260 | And it's at the peak of
00:34:26.260 | his popularity
00:34:28.260 | where people were coming to him by
00:34:30.260 | the thousands, where he
00:34:32.260 | makes it very clear. He begins to preach
00:34:34.260 | about the kingdom of God, and Jesus is
00:34:36.260 | crucified not because of his miracles.
00:34:38.260 | If all Jesus did
00:34:40.260 | was heal people, feed people,
00:34:42.260 | walk on water,
00:34:44.260 | he would have been celebrated. No matter what
00:34:46.260 | religion, no matter what background, in every generation,
00:34:48.260 | they would have talked about Jesus.
00:34:50.260 | This great man came from God,
00:34:52.260 | and he did some great work,
00:34:54.260 | but the reason why he was crucified
00:34:56.260 | was not because of his works, but because of what
00:34:58.260 | he said, and
00:35:00.260 | who he claimed to be.
00:35:02.260 | So, this morning,
00:35:04.260 | what I want to look at is, in his preaching
00:35:06.260 | of the kingdom of God,
00:35:08.260 | how does that affect us?
00:35:10.260 | And why
00:35:12.260 | is this decision
00:35:14.260 | so important, that we
00:35:16.260 | come to a clear conviction
00:35:18.260 | of who this man is?
00:35:20.260 | Number one,
00:35:22.260 | preaching of his kingdom
00:35:24.260 | makes Jesus
00:35:26.260 | the center.
00:35:28.260 | Preaching of the kingdom puts Jesus
00:35:30.260 | at the center.
00:35:32.260 | In Luke chapter 9,
00:35:34.260 | verse 7 and 8, it says, "Now Herod the Tetrarch
00:35:36.260 | heard of all that was happening,
00:35:38.260 | and he was greatly perplexed,
00:35:40.260 | because it was said by
00:35:42.260 | some that John had risen from the dead,
00:35:44.260 | and by some that Elijah had appeared,
00:35:46.260 | and by others that one of the prophets of old
00:35:48.260 | had risen again."
00:35:50.260 | So, John did such a great job.
00:35:52.260 | Right?
00:35:54.260 | He did such a great job, that after
00:35:56.260 | he finished his ministry,
00:35:58.260 | and he is beheaded, Jesus comes on the
00:36:00.260 | scene, and they couldn't tell the difference.
00:36:02.260 | Because he sounded
00:36:04.260 | and acted
00:36:06.260 | just like John. And John came on the scene,
00:36:08.260 | he said, when Jesus
00:36:10.260 | shows up, his eye must decrease, and he must increase.
00:36:12.260 | And the whole purpose of his ministry
00:36:14.260 | was so that when Jesus came,
00:36:16.260 | that he would take the baton and continue
00:36:18.260 | what he did. And he did such a great job,
00:36:20.260 | that most of the people,
00:36:22.260 | when they asked, "Who do you think Jesus is?"
00:36:24.260 | The common answer
00:36:26.260 | that they got was, "He must
00:36:28.260 | be John." And some were
00:36:30.260 | saying, "Well, he was beheaded. How can that be John?
00:36:32.260 | He must have come back from the dead.
00:36:34.260 | Who else could be doing what he's doing?"
00:36:36.260 | That's a calling
00:36:38.260 | of every servant.
00:36:40.260 | Every servant of God
00:36:42.260 | is to simply do his work
00:36:44.260 | and then go home.
00:36:46.260 | The problem that we get into
00:36:48.260 | is when somebody begins
00:36:50.260 | to focus his attention trying to make a name
00:36:52.260 | for themselves.
00:36:54.260 | What do you want to be known as?
00:36:56.260 | What kind of legacy do you want
00:36:58.260 | to leave behind? That very
00:37:00.260 | thought will disqualify
00:37:02.260 | you. If you're a servant,
00:37:04.260 | you do what he tells you to do, and then if
00:37:06.260 | you did a great job, they would thank your
00:37:08.260 | master, and they forgot who did it.
00:37:10.260 | And you just go
00:37:12.260 | home. But when the servant
00:37:14.260 | of God stands in the middle, trying to
00:37:16.260 | make a name for himself, he disqualifies
00:37:18.260 | himself.
00:37:20.260 | Because the preaching of the kingdom is not
00:37:22.260 | about you. It's not about the messenger.
00:37:24.260 | It's about him.
00:37:26.260 | It's about him. And John the Baptist
00:37:28.260 | did such a great job, they couldn't tell
00:37:30.260 | the difference.
00:37:32.260 | Humanly speaking, we can look at that as
00:37:34.260 | he sacrificed everything to prepare the way
00:37:36.260 | of Christ, and then when Jesus appears,
00:37:38.260 | there's no
00:37:40.260 | thank you, there's no celebration, there's no
00:37:42.260 | veneration. He dies like
00:37:44.260 | a criminal. Gets a
00:37:46.260 | head beheaded, and then he goes home.
00:37:48.260 | But Jesus says of John
00:37:50.260 | the Baptist, of all the
00:37:52.260 | men born of a woman, there's nobody
00:37:54.260 | greater than John. So what made him so great?
00:37:56.260 | What made him so great?
00:38:00.260 | He did exactly what he
00:38:02.260 | was called to do, and he did
00:38:04.260 | such a great job, they couldn't tell the difference.
00:38:06.260 | And then when his job was over,
00:38:08.260 | he died.
00:38:10.260 | He went home to be in glory.
00:38:12.260 | That's the job
00:38:14.260 | of every servant. The preaching of the kingdom
00:38:16.260 | is about him.
00:38:18.260 | It's not about me. It's not about you.
00:38:20.260 | It's not about any system. It's not about
00:38:22.260 | any training or education.
00:38:24.260 | It's not about talent.
00:38:26.260 | It's about him.
00:38:28.260 | If you come to church week after week,
00:38:30.260 | year after year, and your
00:38:32.260 | love for Christ doesn't grow as a result
00:38:34.260 | of being here, then I
00:38:36.260 | have failed.
00:38:38.260 | My job is not to get
00:38:40.260 | you to love me. It's not to get you to love
00:38:42.260 | this church, or system, or
00:38:44.260 | form of theology.
00:38:46.260 | It's to love Christ. And if I did a good job,
00:38:48.260 | that you end up loving Christ
00:38:50.260 | as a result, you give him the glory,
00:38:52.260 | and then when it's time, I go home.
00:38:54.260 | The end.
00:38:56.260 | That's
00:38:58.260 | what the preaching of the kingdom
00:39:00.260 | was.
00:39:02.260 | In Colossians 3, 4,
00:39:04.260 | 3-4, it says, "For you have died."
00:39:06.260 | You're dead.
00:39:08.260 | Not you're going to die. You're dead.
00:39:10.260 | If you are a believer in Christ,
00:39:12.260 | he says,
00:39:14.260 | you have died, and your life is now
00:39:16.260 | hidden with Christ in God.
00:39:18.260 | When Christ, who is our life, is
00:39:20.260 | revealed, then you also will be revealed with
00:39:22.260 | him in glory.
00:39:24.260 | Whether you are a pastor, or an elder, or
00:39:26.260 | deacon, or anything
00:39:28.260 | in the church, or maybe just
00:39:30.260 | a regular member in the church,
00:39:32.260 | every Christian's call
00:39:34.260 | is to recognize that when you
00:39:36.260 | met Christ, you have been crucified.
00:39:38.260 | That's why when
00:39:40.260 | Ellie went into the water,
00:39:42.260 | we asked her, "Do you recognize? Do you understand
00:39:44.260 | that when you're going into
00:39:46.260 | the water, you are dying with Christ?"
00:39:48.260 | That whatever old
00:39:50.260 | life that you had before you met Christ
00:39:52.260 | is crucified with him. Now your
00:39:54.260 | life is hidden with Christ.
00:39:56.260 | And your life and your glory
00:39:58.260 | will appear when he appears.
00:40:00.260 | When he is glorified, we'll be glorified
00:40:02.260 | with him. The trouble that you
00:40:04.260 | and I get into
00:40:06.260 | is that we stand in the middle, hoping
00:40:08.260 | that we would touch some of that glory.
00:40:10.260 | That we would get some recognition.
00:40:12.260 | That we would make a name for ourselves, whether
00:40:14.260 | in church or outside the church.
00:40:16.260 | And it's in this
00:40:18.260 | process of wanting to be somebody,
00:40:20.260 | to be recognized, that
00:40:22.260 | not only does that taint the glory of God,
00:40:24.260 | but it also
00:40:26.260 | frustrates your own life.
00:40:28.260 | Because that's not your job.
00:40:30.260 | That's not what he called
00:40:32.260 | you to be. You're
00:40:34.260 | not meant to be on a pedestal.
00:40:36.260 | Because the moment you're on a pedestal,
00:40:38.260 | all the people will see
00:40:40.260 | is your flaws.
00:40:42.260 | And when they begin to see your
00:40:44.260 | flaws, and they begin to point out your flaws,
00:40:46.260 | you want to get off that pedestal
00:40:48.260 | as soon as possible.
00:40:50.260 | Because you and I were not created to be
00:40:52.260 | on a pedestal.
00:40:54.260 | Only God can be examined
00:40:56.260 | closely
00:40:58.260 | and come out
00:41:00.260 | with people who examined him with
00:41:02.260 | greater opinion.
00:41:04.260 | People are asking, "Is this
00:41:06.260 | Elijah?" Maybe if it's not John,
00:41:08.260 | is it Elijah? Because he had
00:41:10.260 | such great power.
00:41:12.260 | He was considered one of the greatest
00:41:14.260 | prophets of the Old Testament.
00:41:16.260 | And Jesus was performing all these
00:41:18.260 | miracles that maybe it was Elijah
00:41:20.260 | that come back to life.
00:41:22.260 | If it's not Elijah, maybe it's one of the prophets.
00:41:24.260 | In 2 Corinthians 2, 15-17,
00:41:28.260 | it says, "For we are a fragrance
00:41:30.260 | of Christ to God,
00:41:32.260 | among those who are being saved
00:41:34.260 | and among those who are perishing,
00:41:36.260 | to the one an
00:41:38.260 | aroma from death to death, to another
00:41:40.260 | aroma from life to life. And who is
00:41:42.260 | adequate for these things?"
00:41:44.260 | He said,
00:41:46.260 | "If we do a good job,
00:41:48.260 | people will begin
00:41:50.260 | to see Christ,
00:41:52.260 | to smell Christ."
00:41:54.260 | You ever been with somebody so long
00:41:56.260 | that you begin to smell like each other?
00:41:58.260 | If you've been married for a long time,
00:42:00.260 | some of you guys probably in their jubilee,
00:42:02.260 | maybe, somebody has said that
00:42:04.260 | you guys start to look alike.
00:42:06.260 | Have you said that?
00:42:08.260 | I don't know if you
00:42:10.260 | get offended when you hear that,
00:42:12.260 | but when I hear that,
00:42:14.260 | it's like, "Great!"
00:42:16.260 | SR and I say,
00:42:18.260 | "Hey, you look like, did you marry your sister?"
00:42:20.260 | The longer
00:42:22.260 | you stay, because we eat the same,
00:42:24.260 | we're living in the same house, we've been together for so long,
00:42:26.260 | that you begin to smell alike,
00:42:28.260 | you have same appetite, the things that she likes,
00:42:30.260 | I begin to like,
00:42:32.260 | and then you start to look alike, maybe you
00:42:34.260 | start to even smell alike. I don't know if the
00:42:36.260 | wives will be happy with that,
00:42:38.260 | but he said
00:42:40.260 | that, "If you are a child of God,
00:42:42.260 | and you are growing in your faith,
00:42:44.260 | the ultimate compliment
00:42:46.260 | is
00:42:48.260 | for somebody to say,
00:42:50.260 | 'I sense the aroma of Christ
00:42:52.260 | in you.'"
00:42:54.260 | That's the greatest compliment
00:42:56.260 | any Christian can get.
00:42:58.260 | Not how gifted you are, not how talented,
00:43:00.260 | not all the fruits that you bore,
00:43:02.260 | but that being around you,
00:43:04.260 | I smell
00:43:06.260 | Christ.
00:43:08.260 | John the Baptist
00:43:10.260 | smelled so much
00:43:12.260 | like Christ, people were
00:43:14.260 | confusing him with Christ.
00:43:16.260 | Preaching
00:43:18.260 | of the kingdom reminds us that that's
00:43:20.260 | exactly what you and I have been called
00:43:22.260 | to do, to represent Christ.
00:43:24.260 | In word, in life, in deed,
00:43:26.260 | in all ways,
00:43:28.260 | where we begin to
00:43:30.260 | disappear, and Christ
00:43:32.260 | begins to appear. That's Christian maturity.
00:43:34.260 | You know
00:43:36.260 | what's interesting is, Jesus asked
00:43:38.260 | this question to his disciples,
00:43:40.260 | "Who do men say that I am?"
00:43:42.260 | Remember, they were saying, "Some say
00:43:44.260 | you're John the Baptist." That was the first
00:43:46.260 | one that people would say, because they looked so much
00:43:48.260 | or they sounded so much alike.
00:43:50.260 | "Some say that you're Elijah. Some say you're
00:43:52.260 | Jeremiah. Some say
00:43:54.260 | you're one of the prophets."
00:43:56.260 | But one
00:43:58.260 | thing that they did not say,
00:44:00.260 | is that he was an ordinary man.
00:44:02.260 | Even
00:44:04.260 | the lowliest of opinion
00:44:06.260 | was that he was maybe a prophet.
00:44:08.260 | But they all
00:44:10.260 | recognized that he was not
00:44:12.260 | just anybody.
00:44:14.260 | In other words, they couldn't ignore him.
00:44:16.260 | But you know what's interesting? When Jesus turns around and asks
00:44:18.260 | his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?"
00:44:20.260 | That everything that everybody else
00:44:22.260 | was saying would have been a huge compliment.
00:44:24.260 | It would have been a huge
00:44:26.260 | stroke to an ego.
00:44:28.260 | "You know what? You remind me of
00:44:30.260 | Elijah."
00:44:32.260 | "Wow, really?"
00:44:34.260 | Or maybe, "Jeremiah, really?
00:44:36.260 | The prophet of God.
00:44:38.260 | Or just one of many prophets.
00:44:40.260 | A prophet."
00:44:42.260 | But that opinion would have been blasphemous
00:44:44.260 | to Christ.
00:44:46.260 | But you know what's interesting here is typically
00:44:48.260 | if you ask opinion of somebody,
00:44:50.260 | the people who have the most
00:44:52.260 | exaggerated opinions of somebody
00:44:54.260 | are the people who observe them from a distance.
00:44:56.260 | And usually
00:44:58.260 | you have these celebrity pastors who have
00:45:00.260 | written books and have large, large
00:45:02.260 | congregations and they go traveling
00:45:04.260 | everywhere and people are flocking to him.
00:45:06.260 | And they have stories after stories of how
00:45:08.260 | great this man is.
00:45:10.260 | But the people who work with him
00:45:12.260 | day in and day out, their family members,
00:45:14.260 | and even if they have great opinion,
00:45:16.260 | typically you'll hear, "Oh, you guys say this,
00:45:18.260 | but he sometimes can be lazy.
00:45:20.260 | Sometimes he can
00:45:22.260 | lose his temper. Sometimes he can do this."
00:45:24.260 | And people who are the closest to that person
00:45:26.260 | has a real view.
00:45:28.260 | All these things may be great,
00:45:30.260 | but it's tempered because the closer
00:45:32.260 | you are with that person, you get to see
00:45:34.260 | their flaws.
00:45:36.260 | But with Christ,
00:45:38.260 | the people who are the closest to him
00:45:40.260 | had the greatest
00:45:42.260 | opinion of him.
00:45:44.260 | People who walked with him, ate with him,
00:45:46.260 | they saw him when he was pressured.
00:45:48.260 | They saw him when people were trying to hurt
00:45:50.260 | him, when people were
00:45:52.260 | backstabbing him. They saw all of that
00:45:54.260 | and the people who had the greatest, the
00:45:56.260 | front row, closest seat of Christ
00:45:58.260 | had the greatest opinion of
00:46:00.260 | who Jesus was.
00:46:02.260 | That he was the king of kings
00:46:04.260 | and the lord of lords.
00:46:06.260 | So
00:46:08.260 | because of that, they naturally
00:46:10.260 | began to go to the back.
00:46:12.260 | Preaching of Christ naturally puts
00:46:16.260 | Christ at the center, and two,
00:46:18.260 | putting Christ at the center,
00:46:20.260 | preaching of the kingdom, threatens
00:46:22.260 | all other kingdoms.
00:46:24.260 | It threatens all other kingdoms
00:46:28.260 | because when
00:46:30.260 | he comes,
00:46:32.260 | you can only have one
00:46:34.260 | king. You can't have kingdoms within
00:46:36.260 | kingdoms.
00:46:38.260 | This king, Herod
00:46:40.260 | the Tetrarch, was a child
00:46:42.260 | of his father.
00:46:44.260 | And if you remember the beginning story of when Jesus
00:46:46.260 | was prophesying, he was coming on the scene,
00:46:48.260 | he's being born, he heard of the
00:46:50.260 | prophecy that the Messiah
00:46:52.260 | that the Jews had been waiting for
00:46:54.260 | was coming.
00:46:56.260 | And so he was afraid
00:46:58.260 | because he was not the
00:47:00.260 | rightful king of Israel.
00:47:02.260 | He was an Edomite. And the Romans
00:47:04.260 | put him there as a puppet king
00:47:06.260 | to basically
00:47:08.260 | keep peace.
00:47:10.260 | To satisfy the Jews.
00:47:12.260 | And if there ever was a rebellion, that the Romans
00:47:14.260 | would not have to get directly involved.
00:47:16.260 | That they don't have to get their hands dirty.
00:47:18.260 | So they would use a puppet king to basically
00:47:20.260 | suppress any kind of rebellion.
00:47:22.260 | So King Herod the Great,
00:47:24.260 | King Herod the Tetrarch's father,
00:47:26.260 | was so paranoid about losing
00:47:28.260 | his power, that
00:47:30.260 | he even killed his own son.
00:47:32.260 | He was afraid that his son was
00:47:34.260 | becoming a little bit too popular, and then he
00:47:36.260 | crushed him and killed him. And then the 70
00:47:38.260 | members of the Sanhedrin,
00:47:40.260 | the senators of Israel,
00:47:42.260 | because they had a difficult time
00:47:44.260 | accepting an Edomite
00:47:46.260 | as their king,
00:47:48.260 | he ended up slaughtering all 70 of them.
00:47:50.260 | And so what ends up happening is
00:47:52.260 | after he dies, he was afraid
00:47:54.260 | that his kingdom was going to,
00:47:56.260 | that there wasn't going to be an individual that was going to bring them all together,
00:47:58.260 | so he divides the kingdom
00:48:00.260 | into four pieces.
00:48:02.260 | And so, King Herod the Tetrarch,
00:48:04.260 | which we see here,
00:48:06.260 | happened to be one of those children,
00:48:08.260 | and he was the king over Galilee.
00:48:10.260 | So this king
00:48:12.260 | that is mentioned here,
00:48:14.260 | he ruled for 42 years. So the whole
00:48:16.260 | time of Jesus's, after Jesus's
00:48:18.260 | birth, until he was crucified,
00:48:20.260 | this is the king that ruled.
00:48:22.260 | If his father
00:48:24.260 | was hated, he was hated even
00:48:26.260 | more by the Jews.
00:48:28.260 | Because he's the guy who set up idols everywhere
00:48:30.260 | for the sake of Rome, and he's the one
00:48:32.260 | who forced the Jews as they
00:48:34.260 | walked to bow to these idols
00:48:36.260 | recognizing Rome
00:48:38.260 | as their final authority.
00:48:40.260 | He actually even built
00:48:42.260 | the capital
00:48:44.260 | on Jewish cemetery,
00:48:46.260 | which would have been sacrilegious for Jews
00:48:48.260 | to walk in and made them unclean.
00:48:50.260 | So this is a man who was
00:48:52.260 | hated. Not only was he an Edomite,
00:48:54.260 | he kept on suppressing them
00:48:56.260 | and did the dirty work of the Romans.
00:48:58.260 | So he
00:49:00.260 | lived in constant fear that
00:49:02.260 | his kingdom was going to be taken away.
00:49:04.260 | So imagine,
00:49:06.260 | you have
00:49:08.260 | John the Baptist coming on the scene,
00:49:10.260 | preaching, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand."
00:49:12.260 | Kingdom of heaven?
00:49:14.260 | The king of the Jews
00:49:16.260 | is coming.
00:49:18.260 | And then Jesus comes on the scene and he
00:49:20.260 | preaches the same thing, "The king is
00:49:22.260 | coming. The king is coming."
00:49:24.260 | So imagine
00:49:26.260 | the anxiety. He wasn't asking, "Who
00:49:28.260 | is this man?" simply because he was curious.
00:49:30.260 | Because he was
00:49:32.260 | threatened.
00:49:34.260 | He was threatened.
00:49:36.260 | In fact, John, if there was any,
00:49:38.260 | if there was any
00:49:40.260 | question or any doubt of the identity
00:49:42.260 | of Jesus, if you
00:49:44.260 | read John chapter 1, 19-23,
00:49:46.260 | and I'm just going to read the long text, but I want you
00:49:48.260 | to pay attention to the very end.
00:49:50.260 | This is the testimony of John when the Jews
00:49:52.260 | sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem
00:49:54.260 | to ask him, "Who are you?"
00:49:56.260 | This question is to John the Baptist.
00:49:58.260 | And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed,
00:50:00.260 | "I am not the Christ." They asked him,
00:50:02.260 | "What then are you? Are you Elijah?"
00:50:04.260 | And he said, "I am not. Are you a prophet?" And he answered,
00:50:06.260 | "No. Are you the prophet I mean?"
00:50:08.260 | Then they said to him, "Who are you?"
00:50:10.260 | So that we may give an answer to
00:50:12.260 | those who sent us. "What do you
00:50:14.260 | say about yourself?"
00:50:16.260 | And then pay attention to this.
00:50:18.260 | In verse 23, he quotes
00:50:20.260 | a Messianic
00:50:22.260 | prophecy in Isaiah chapter 40,
00:50:24.260 | verse 3. He said, "I am the
00:50:26.260 | voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make straight
00:50:28.260 | the way of the Lord, as Isaiah
00:50:30.260 | the prophet said." So I want you to...
00:50:32.260 | Okay.
00:50:34.260 | If you notice here, in verse 23,
00:50:36.260 | "Make straight the way of the..."
00:50:38.260 | What? L-O-R-D. It's all in capital.
00:50:40.260 | Right? It's all in capital. Those
00:50:42.260 | of you who know what that is, why is that all in capital?
00:50:44.260 | Because the original
00:50:46.260 | quote in Isaiah 43,
00:50:48.260 | when it is all in capital, it means
00:50:50.260 | that in Hebrew, it means what?
00:50:52.260 | What's the actual word there?
00:50:54.260 | Yahweh.
00:50:56.260 | Okay? So let's go to that verse in
00:50:58.260 | Isaiah 40, verse 3.
00:51:00.260 | This is the verse that he's
00:51:02.260 | quoting, and it says, "A voice
00:51:04.260 | is calling, 'Clear the way of Yahweh
00:51:06.260 | in the wilderness, and make
00:51:08.260 | smooth in the desert a highway
00:51:10.260 | for our God.'"
00:51:12.260 | So if there was any
00:51:14.260 | question who Jesus was, he's referring
00:51:16.260 | his whole job was to
00:51:18.260 | come before Christ and prepare
00:51:20.260 | the way for Christ, but he says,
00:51:22.260 | "My job is to prepare
00:51:26.260 | the way for Jesus,"
00:51:28.260 | and he
00:51:30.260 | calls him "Yahweh."
00:51:32.260 | And if there was any question that he was
00:51:36.260 | referring to God, the second
00:51:38.260 | part of "make smooth in the desert a highway
00:51:40.260 | for our God."
00:51:42.260 | So if anybody tells
00:51:44.260 | you that the Bible, the New Testament,
00:51:46.260 | never says Jesus is God,
00:51:48.260 | quote this passage. This is what John
00:51:50.260 | the Baptist says. John the
00:51:52.260 | Baptist knew clearly what his job was,
00:51:54.260 | that he was clearing the way
00:51:56.260 | for the King of kings and the
00:51:58.260 | Lord of lords to come.
00:52:00.260 | And so
00:52:02.260 | when the King comes, "Repent,
00:52:04.260 | for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,"
00:52:06.260 | the only way that you can enter the kingdom
00:52:08.260 | where Christ reigns is if
00:52:10.260 | whatever reign that you had before
00:52:12.260 | Christ, that you need to repent
00:52:14.260 | of it.
00:52:16.260 | A long time ago when my children were
00:52:18.260 | younger, I would take trips to
00:52:20.260 | China or different places, and
00:52:22.260 | there's a clear pecking order in our home,
00:52:24.260 | and this is the way that my
00:52:26.260 | wife has established at home and taught our kids.
00:52:28.260 | So when
00:52:30.260 | I'm gone, my
00:52:32.260 | queen becomes the king.
00:52:34.260 | So Esther becomes the queen,
00:52:36.260 | or is the queen.
00:52:38.260 | And so whatever she says goes.
00:52:40.260 | And then when she's not there,
00:52:42.260 | our oldest child, Jeremy,
00:52:44.260 | he becomes the king.
00:52:46.260 | And he does whatever he wants.
00:52:48.260 | Not whatever he wants,
00:52:50.260 | but he becomes a ruler of that house
00:52:52.260 | temporarily, and then when he's gone,
00:52:54.260 | our second son, Zachary,
00:52:56.260 | becomes the king of the house, and he rules.
00:52:58.260 | And then when he's gone,
00:53:00.260 | he becomes the queen
00:53:02.260 | temporarily, and she rules, and then when she's
00:53:04.260 | gone, Isaiah
00:53:06.260 | rules his cats.
00:53:08.260 | [laughter]
00:53:10.260 | And that's the pecking order.
00:53:12.260 | [laughter]
00:53:14.260 | But when I come home,
00:53:16.260 | whatever authority
00:53:18.260 | they had disappears.
00:53:20.260 | Whatever
00:53:22.260 | authority they may have had
00:53:24.260 | temporarily before I came
00:53:26.260 | home diminishes.
00:53:28.260 | Disappears.
00:53:30.260 | And that's what he was proclaiming.
00:53:32.260 | The real
00:53:34.260 | king is coming, not only
00:53:36.260 | to replace Herod or any
00:53:38.260 | other king, but any other authority,
00:53:40.260 | even yourself.
00:53:42.260 | And that's why he says,
00:53:44.260 | "Repent,
00:53:46.260 | for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Repent,
00:53:48.260 | for the reign of Christ has come.
00:53:50.260 | Repent, for the king has
00:53:52.260 | come to reign."
00:53:54.260 | That's why he says to repent.
00:53:56.260 | So the preaching of the kingdom
00:53:58.260 | naturally
00:54:00.260 | does away with any other
00:54:02.260 | kingdom.
00:54:04.260 | But Herod had a much more
00:54:06.260 | personal reason, other than his fear
00:54:08.260 | of losing his own kingdom.
00:54:10.260 | His own sin was going to be called out.
00:54:12.260 | The preaching of his kingdom,
00:54:14.260 | third and finally, sheds light
00:54:16.260 | of our own sins.
00:54:18.260 | See,
00:54:20.260 | you probably know about
00:54:22.260 | this story, but let me refresh your memory.
00:54:24.260 | Herod the Tetrarch,
00:54:26.260 | he was one of
00:54:28.260 | four kings. The kingdom was divided
00:54:30.260 | into four. And he ended
00:54:32.260 | up taking his brother's wife,
00:54:34.260 | Herod Philip.
00:54:36.260 | And so, it was mutual.
00:54:38.260 | So his wife fell in love
00:54:40.260 | or whatever it was, and
00:54:42.260 | so they, basically,
00:54:44.260 | he leaves his,
00:54:46.260 | she leaves Herodias, she leaves her husband, comes
00:54:48.260 | to Herod the Tetrarch, and then
00:54:50.260 | they ended up getting married.
00:54:52.260 | But John the Baptist sees that
00:54:54.260 | and begins to call out their sin.
00:54:56.260 | He said,
00:54:58.260 | "This is not right before God."
00:55:00.260 | Now, you have to understand,
00:55:02.260 | as a king of Israel,
00:55:04.260 | one of the four kingdoms of Israel,
00:55:06.260 | as a king, you can do whatever you want.
00:55:08.260 | Who's going to stop him? He's the king.
00:55:10.260 | The king has absolute reign.
00:55:12.260 | Except, in Israel,
00:55:14.260 | the king of Israel was different
00:55:16.260 | than any other king, because there was a king
00:55:18.260 | above that king.
00:55:20.260 | And so the servant of God, John the Baptist,
00:55:22.260 | who comes on the scene to prepare the way
00:55:24.260 | of the real king that's coming,
00:55:26.260 | calls him out to repent.
00:55:28.260 | So John the Baptist puts him in jail.
00:55:32.260 | Doesn't kill him, puts him in jail.
00:55:34.260 | But Herodias,
00:55:36.260 | the wife of
00:55:38.260 | King Philip, is bothered
00:55:40.260 | by this. "I don't want this guy, he's so
00:55:42.260 | popular, and then he's calling me out, he's shaming us."
00:55:44.260 | And so she has this elaborate
00:55:46.260 | plan, and she knows
00:55:48.260 | that King Herodias, King
00:55:50.260 | Tetrarch,
00:55:52.260 | was lusting after her own
00:55:54.260 | daughter, stepdaughter.
00:55:56.260 | So she had this elaborate plan
00:55:58.260 | to go and perform this dance
00:56:00.260 | and ask him, "If I do this for you, would you give
00:56:02.260 | me anything in the kingdom?"
00:56:04.260 | And in his lust,
00:56:06.260 | Herod says, "Yes." She
00:56:08.260 | performs this elaborate,
00:56:10.260 | lustful dance before this king,
00:56:12.260 | and because he made this promise, after
00:56:14.260 | it's done, he said, "What can I do for you?"
00:56:16.260 | And she said, "Give me the head
00:56:18.260 | of John the Baptist."
00:56:20.260 | Now,
00:56:22.260 | he didn't want
00:56:24.260 | to do that, but he was
00:56:26.260 | forced to because he made it a public profession,
00:56:28.260 | and what if people laugh at me for
00:56:30.260 | making this, and I'm afraid of this man,
00:56:32.260 | so out of fear,
00:56:34.260 | out of fear, he ended up
00:56:36.260 | doing what she asked him to do.
00:56:38.260 | But I want you to read what it says
00:56:40.260 | here.
00:56:42.260 | In Luke chapter 3, 19-20,
00:56:44.260 | it kind of gives us a background, and I'm going to read
00:56:46.260 | another passage. "When Herod
00:56:48.260 | Tetrarch was reprimanded by him because
00:56:50.260 | of Herodias, his brother's wife,
00:56:52.260 | and because of all the wicked things which
00:56:54.260 | Herod had done, Herod also added
00:56:56.260 | this to them all. He locked John
00:56:58.260 | up in prison." Now, we look at that
00:57:00.260 | and say, "Well, Herod was an evil man.
00:57:02.260 | He beheaded a righteous man for
00:57:04.260 | calling out his sins." But in Mark 6,
00:57:06.260 | 19-20, this is what it says about him.
00:57:08.260 | "Herodias had a grudge
00:57:10.260 | against him, John the Baptist, and wanted to
00:57:12.260 | put him to death, and could not do so.
00:57:14.260 | For Herod was afraid
00:57:16.260 | of John, knowing that
00:57:18.260 | he was a righteous and holy man,
00:57:20.260 | and he kept him safe."
00:57:22.260 | I'm going to stop right there.
00:57:24.260 | He said
00:57:26.260 | he actually knew, and he was in
00:57:28.260 | fear of John,
00:57:30.260 | because he realized he was not any ordinary
00:57:32.260 | man. He's a righteous man. He's a holy
00:57:34.260 | man, so if he touches him,
00:57:36.260 | he's going to get in trouble. What if
00:57:38.260 | God becomes angry? So he kept
00:57:40.260 | him in prison.
00:57:42.260 | He said to keep him safe
00:57:44.260 | so that other people could not touch him.
00:57:46.260 | And when he heard him, he was
00:57:48.260 | very perplexed, but he used to enjoy
00:57:50.260 | listening to him.
00:57:52.260 | Now, why do I
00:57:54.260 | point this out? One, so that you may have a better
00:57:56.260 | understanding of why Herod
00:57:58.260 | did what he did.
00:58:00.260 | He's the
00:58:02.260 | same guy. When Jesus is being crucified,
00:58:04.260 | Pilate
00:58:06.260 | is trying to see what's going on.
00:58:08.260 | He realizes Jesus is an innocent man.
00:58:10.260 | He said, "This is not my jurisdiction." And he
00:58:12.260 | sends him back
00:58:14.260 | to King Herod. Herod interviews
00:58:16.260 | him, and he realizes, again,
00:58:18.260 | this is a man from God.
00:58:20.260 | And he doesn't want his hands
00:58:22.260 | getting dirty. So he
00:58:24.260 | sends him back to Pilate.
00:58:26.260 | And Pilate says, "I don't want his
00:58:28.260 | blood on my hand." So he
00:58:30.260 | wants to release him.
00:58:32.260 | So he presents him to the Jews, and they cry
00:58:34.260 | out, "No, we want Jesus crucified.
00:58:36.260 | We want Jesus crucified." And then
00:58:38.260 | Pilate says, "I'm washing my hands. I'm not
00:58:40.260 | guilty of this."
00:58:42.260 | And in this process of them going back
00:58:44.260 | and forth between Pilate and
00:58:46.260 | Herod, the Bible says that they became
00:58:48.260 | good friends, because they were
00:58:50.260 | enemies prior to that. Now, why
00:58:52.260 | did this event cause them to
00:58:54.260 | be good friends?
00:58:56.260 | Because they found kindred
00:58:58.260 | spirit.
00:59:00.260 | Both of them saw Jesus
00:59:02.260 | as a righteous, innocent man.
00:59:04.260 | And they didn't
00:59:06.260 | want to kill him. They didn't want the guilt
00:59:08.260 | of killing an innocent man on their hands.
00:59:10.260 | And both of them wanted to
00:59:12.260 | wash their hands of this
00:59:14.260 | man's death.
00:59:16.260 | And they found kindred spirit in each other.
00:59:18.260 | It says they became good friends.
00:59:20.260 | Now, the reason why I point this out
00:59:22.260 | is that most people who reject
00:59:24.260 | Christ,
00:59:26.260 | they don't shake their fist at Jesus.
00:59:28.260 | Most
00:59:30.260 | people who reject Christ don't say, "You know, that's
00:59:32.260 | a crazy man. I don't
00:59:34.260 | want anything to do with him."
00:59:36.260 | Most people who reject Jesus
00:59:38.260 | is simply because
00:59:40.260 | they're afraid
00:59:42.260 | to lose themselves.
00:59:44.260 | They're afraid to lose their kingdom.
00:59:48.260 | The Scripture
00:59:50.260 | says,
00:59:52.260 | Romans 1:18, "For the wrath
00:59:54.260 | of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
00:59:56.260 | and unrighteousness of men who suppress
00:59:58.260 | the truth in unrighteousness."
01:00:00.260 | Suppress
01:00:02.260 | the truth.
01:00:04.260 | Most people who reject Christ
01:00:06.260 | hear him banging on the door
01:00:08.260 | and they look at the camera
01:00:10.260 | and they ask, "Who is this
01:00:12.260 | man?" But you don't
01:00:14.260 | want the consequence of dealing with that.
01:00:16.260 | So in your bed,
01:00:18.260 | in your anxiousness,
01:00:20.260 | you do nothing.
01:00:22.260 | You come
01:00:24.260 | to church.
01:00:26.260 | You do the minimum that is required to
01:00:28.260 | belong to this community.
01:00:30.260 | But you've never
01:00:32.260 | come to a
01:00:34.260 | complete conviction
01:00:36.260 | that this
01:00:38.260 | is the voice of God.
01:00:40.260 | So you're
01:00:42.260 | holding on to your kingdom.
01:00:44.260 | You're holding on to your old way of life.
01:00:46.260 | And if somebody asks you,
01:00:48.260 | "Who is this man?" You can theologically
01:00:50.260 | profess,
01:00:52.260 | "He is the Christ,
01:00:54.260 | the Son of the living God. I believe all that
01:00:56.260 | and I can recite the gospel to you."
01:00:58.260 | But the only difference
01:01:00.260 | between demonic faith and saving faith
01:01:02.260 | the demons profess the same thing
01:01:04.260 | yet they disobey.
01:01:06.260 | They know the right theology.
01:01:08.260 | They're the first one who recognizes Jesus
01:01:10.260 | who is trembling in fear in his
01:01:12.260 | presence and yet they disobey.
01:01:14.260 | Most people who reject Christ
01:01:18.260 | never say that they rejected
01:01:20.260 | Christ.
01:01:22.260 | They reject Christ by not
01:01:24.260 | answering the door.
01:01:26.260 | You just look
01:01:28.260 | at him from a distance. You admire him.
01:01:30.260 | You become a fan
01:01:32.260 | of him but you're not
01:01:34.260 | following him.
01:01:36.260 | You're not obeying him.
01:01:38.260 | You're still working
01:01:40.260 | so hard to build up
01:01:42.260 | your own kingdom.
01:01:44.260 | You cannot serve
01:01:46.260 | God and mammon.
01:01:48.260 | You cannot.
01:01:50.260 | For the
01:01:52.260 | kingdom of heaven is at hand.
01:01:54.260 | The reign of Christ has come.
01:01:56.260 | The king of kings and lord of lords
01:01:58.260 | has come
01:02:00.260 | to take his kingdom for himself
01:02:02.260 | and he calls
01:02:04.260 | the sinners to come to him.
01:02:06.260 | The scripture tells us
01:02:10.260 | in Revelation chapter 3
01:02:12.260 | "Behold I stand at the door
01:02:14.260 | and knock.
01:02:16.260 | He who hears my voice and opens the
01:02:18.260 | door I will come into him and dine
01:02:20.260 | with him and he with me."
01:02:22.260 | There is somebody at the door.
01:02:26.260 | There is somebody at the door.
01:02:30.260 | You may have a different opinion
01:02:34.260 | whatever it may be
01:02:36.260 | but one thing that you cannot do
01:02:38.260 | is ignore him.
01:02:40.260 | Either you come to a conclusion
01:02:44.260 | and you say
01:02:46.260 | I don't think
01:02:48.260 | he is who he said he was.
01:02:50.260 | So all this is a waste
01:02:52.260 | of time. Every dollar that I give to the church
01:02:54.260 | is a waste of money that I could
01:02:56.260 | have used for a vacation or a bigger home
01:02:58.260 | or nicer food.
01:03:00.260 | But if he is
01:03:02.260 | who he said he is
01:03:04.260 | and his credentials check out
01:03:06.260 | and heaven and hell is real
01:03:08.260 | the question that we need to ask
01:03:12.260 | ourselves
01:03:14.260 | did we
01:03:16.260 | open the door?
01:03:18.260 | Did we pack up our
01:03:20.260 | bags?
01:03:22.260 | And did we run out of this
01:03:24.260 | burning house?
01:03:26.260 | How can you confess
01:03:28.260 | that Christ
01:03:30.260 | has come to warn us about judgment
01:03:32.260 | and still be in your
01:03:34.260 | house?
01:03:36.260 | Who is this man?
01:03:40.260 | I know
01:03:42.260 | what they say he is.
01:03:44.260 | I know what others have said
01:03:46.260 | said who he is.
01:03:48.260 | Who do you say he is?
01:03:50.260 | Let's pray.
01:03:54.260 | Father we pray that the truth of your
01:04:04.260 | word would bear fruit in our hearts and our lives
01:04:06.260 | that we would not simply
01:04:08.260 | be confessors of faith
01:04:10.260 | but that we would
01:04:12.260 | receive your word
01:04:14.260 | that we would be
01:04:16.260 | able to come to the throne of grace
01:04:18.260 | with confidence.
01:04:20.260 | May Christ and Christ
01:04:22.260 | alone be exalted in our myths.
01:04:24.260 | In Jesus name we pray.
01:04:26.260 | Amen. Let's all stand up
01:04:28.260 | for the closing praise.
01:04:30.260 | [applause]
01:04:32.260 | Give one second.
01:04:48.260 | [silence]
01:04:50.260 | [silence]
01:04:52.260 | [silence]
01:04:54.260 | [silence]
01:04:56.260 | [silence]
01:04:58.260 | [silence]
01:05:00.260 | [silence]
01:05:28.260 | [silence]
01:05:30.260 | [silence]
01:05:32.260 | [silence]
01:05:34.260 | [silence]
01:05:36.260 | [silence]
01:05:38.260 | [silence]
01:05:40.260 | [silence]
01:05:42.260 | [silence]
01:05:44.260 | [silence]
01:05:46.260 | [silence]
01:05:48.260 | Your will be done
01:05:50.260 | my God and Father
01:05:52.260 | as in heaven
01:05:54.260 | so on earth
01:05:56.260 | my heart is
01:05:58.260 | drawn to
01:06:00.260 | self-exalting
01:06:02.260 | help me seek
01:06:04.260 | your kingdom first
01:06:06.260 | as Jesus
01:06:08.260 | walked so I
01:06:10.260 | shall walk
01:06:12.260 | held by your same
01:06:14.260 | unchanging love
01:06:16.260 | be still my
01:06:18.260 | soul oh lift
01:06:20.260 | your voice and pray
01:06:22.260 | Father not my
01:06:24.260 | will but yours be done
01:06:26.260 | [music]
01:06:28.260 | [music]
01:06:30.260 | [music]
01:06:32.260 | [music]
01:06:34.260 | how in the
01:06:36.260 | garden he
01:06:38.260 | persisted
01:06:40.260 | I may never
01:06:42.260 | fully know
01:06:44.260 | the fearful weight
01:06:46.260 | of true
01:06:48.260 | obedience
01:06:50.260 | it was held by
01:06:52.260 | him alone
01:06:54.260 | what a wondrous faith
01:06:56.260 | to bear that
01:06:58.260 | cross to bear
01:07:00.260 | my sin what
01:07:02.260 | a wondrous love
01:07:04.260 | my hope was sure
01:07:06.260 | when there my
01:07:08.260 | Savior prayed
01:07:10.260 | Father not my will
01:07:12.260 | but yours be done
01:07:14.260 | [music]
01:07:16.260 | [music]
01:07:18.260 | [music]
01:07:20.260 | [music]
01:07:22.260 | when I am lost
01:07:24.260 | when I am broken
01:07:26.260 | in the
01:07:28.260 | night of fear
01:07:30.260 | and doubt
01:07:32.260 | still I will trust
01:07:34.260 | in my good
01:07:36.260 | Father yes to
01:07:38.260 | one great
01:07:40.260 | King I vow
01:07:42.260 | as Jesus rose
01:07:44.260 | so I shall rise
01:07:46.260 | in ransom
01:07:48.260 | Glory at the throne, my heart restored. With all your saints I sing, Father, none I will but yours be done.
01:08:02.260 | [music]
01:08:19.260 | As we go forth, our God and Father, lead us daily in the fight, that all the world might see your glory and your name be lifted high.
01:08:39.260 | And in this name we overcome, for you shall see us safely home.
01:08:49.260 | Now as your church, we lift our voice and pray, Father, none I will but yours be done.
01:08:59.260 | And in this name we overcome, for you shall see us safely home.
01:09:09.260 | Now as your church, we lift our voice and pray, Father, none I will but yours be done. Father, none I will but yours be done. Father, none I will but yours be done.
01:09:29.260 | [music]
01:09:38.260 | Let's pray.
01:09:40.260 | Now the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, eternal love of God the Father, rest, restore, and strengthen all of God's children, that we may be the aroma of Christ, wherever you send us. Amen.
01:09:56.260 | God sent His Son. They called Him Jesus. He came to love, heal, and forgive. He lived and died.
01:10:24.260 | To buy my pardon, an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.
01:10:41.260 | Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone.
01:11:02.260 | Because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.
01:11:23.260 | [music]
01:11:28.260 | What gift of grace is Jesus my Redeemer? There is no more.
