00:25:01.760 | There were so many reasons why I shouldn't have been on the team.
00:25:05.760 | For one, I suffer from severe motion sickness.
00:25:10.760 | I used to get sick swimming in our own pool.
00:25:15.760 | And I think I still do.
00:25:18.760 | In our past travels, especially when flying,
00:25:22.760 | you can be sure that I will be in bed, out of commission,
00:25:26.760 | for at least 24 hours after we land.
00:25:29.760 | So the length of travel and number of connecting flights to India
00:25:34.760 | was a huge obstacle and fear for me.
00:25:37.760 | When I was asked how the church could pray for me,
00:25:41.760 | my prayer request was that I don't get motion sick.
00:25:45.760 | I know that wasn't very spiritual.
00:25:49.760 | Usually people ask for God's mighty work to be done to them.
00:25:54.760 | Mine was motion sickness, and that was real.
00:25:58.760 | But I am here to tell you that our God does hear not so spiritual prayers too.
00:26:09.760 | He showed me that he is God who meets all of our needs,
00:26:13.760 | no matter how small and insignificant.
00:26:18.760 | Lord has been working in many areas of my life,
00:26:21.760 | areas in life where he wants me to grow.
00:26:25.760 | And witnessing Indian pastors
00:26:28.760 | living their lives with singular focus
00:26:35.760 | in the midst of heavy persecution
00:26:40.760 | really challenged and encouraged me to grow and to seek after God.
00:26:45.760 | One of my favorite pastors once said,
00:26:51.760 | "We are all a work in progress,
00:26:54.760 | and in my life there are construction signs everywhere."
00:26:58.760 | For me, those signs are my grumbling heart,
00:27:02.760 | my critical spirit, and my reluctance to serve,
00:27:06.760 | using the excuses that I am an introvert,
00:27:10.760 | that I don't do well meeting new people,
00:27:14.760 | and I don't have any gifts.
00:27:16.760 | While there may be some truth to all these,
00:27:20.760 | the fact that I am standing here speaking to you is nothing short of a miracle.
00:27:25.760 | I would never in my right mind come up here to speak to such a large group like this,
00:27:31.760 | something that only God can do as I try to obey.
00:27:36.760 | I want to obey as I desire to hear him more.
00:27:42.760 | One of the verses that comforted me all these years is Philippians 1.6,
00:27:47.760 | "Being confident of this very thing,
00:27:50.760 | that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
00:27:57.760 | Even with my reluctance, resistance, and rebellion,
00:28:01.760 | it's comforting to know he will complete the work he has begun
00:28:07.760 | because our Lord is so faithful.
00:28:12.760 | Galatians 2.20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ.
00:28:16.760 | It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.
00:28:20.760 | And the life which I now live in the flesh,
00:28:23.760 | I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
00:28:29.760 | Today, I'm living my best life.
00:28:32.760 | I'm the happiest I've ever been.
00:28:35.760 | It's all because I am seeking to live in obedience to him.
00:28:40.760 | I still have a long, long way to go,
00:28:43.760 | but my desire is to grow, to have a greater affection for him."
00:28:49.760 | I want to encourage you that you are never too old to change,
00:28:54.760 | never too old to grow in the Lord,
00:28:58.760 | and never too old to live for him in obedience.
00:29:02.760 | Thank you.
00:29:05.760 | [applause]
00:29:14.760 | Okay, thank you so much for that encouraging testimony.
00:29:18.760 | Would you take a brief moment to pray
00:29:20.760 | as we walk through some of the Scriptures tonight?
00:29:22.760 | Father, our desire and hope is to remember
00:29:27.760 | and then to consider your amazing work through Christ,
00:29:32.760 | but also then to consider your heart, your desire,
00:29:36.760 | and then to praise and worship you.
00:29:38.760 | And God, as we were encouraged by that testimony,
00:29:41.760 | to live our lives in such a way where it's yours,
00:29:44.760 | and that, God, we would honor and glorify you.
00:29:46.760 | We thank you. It's in Christ's name. Amen.
00:29:49.760 | So as we do a walkthrough of the events of Tuesday of Passion Week,
00:29:55.760 | I do want to give us just a brief, brief review
00:30:00.760 | that on Saturday, just an easy way to remember
00:30:03.760 | is that Jesus was anointed, okay?
00:30:06.760 | That in John chapter 12, it speaks of how
00:30:10.760 | six days before the Passover, he was at Mary's house,
00:30:13.760 | Lazarus was serving, and then Mary anointed him,
00:30:17.760 | and he commented that he's being prepared for the burial.
00:30:20.760 | And then on Palm Sunday, this is Jesus' entry.
00:30:25.760 | What we well know is that though Christ was looking
00:30:29.760 | at the whole city, crying and weeping at its condition,
00:30:32.760 | the people were singing "Hosanna, Hosanna," and rightly so,
00:30:35.760 | but they didn't fully understand.
00:30:38.760 | And then on Monday, we learned yesterday night
00:30:41.760 | that Jesus curses the fig tree,
00:30:44.760 | and he clears the temple of all the merchants.
00:30:47.760 | If you think about the kind of commotion,
00:30:49.760 | if you try to envision what kind of stir,
00:30:52.760 | recall that it wasn't just a small pocket of people.
00:30:56.760 | If you imagine South Coast Plaza,
00:30:58.760 | or if you imagine the spectrum,
00:31:00.760 | and you think that it was in that kind of scenario,
00:31:03.760 | in the merchant's hall that Jesus threw the tables,
00:31:05.760 | you're thinking too small.
00:31:07.760 | We're talking about such degree of the whole
00:31:11.760 | of the Israelite nation coming together
00:31:13.760 | for this incredible moment of sacrifice,
00:31:16.760 | worship, and ritual, right?
00:31:18.760 | We're talking about a scale much bigger than that.
00:31:21.760 | So imagine the kind of news,
00:31:24.760 | the kind of commotion Christ made just last night, okay?
00:31:28.760 | And then so we come to Tuesday,
00:31:30.760 | and on Tuesday, let's see here.
00:31:34.760 | Sorry, brothers, I'm gonna have to ask you
00:31:37.760 | to do the clicker for me.
00:31:39.760 | Thank you.
00:31:41.760 | I'm just gonna ask you guys to do it, okay?
00:31:43.760 | Appreciate it, I don't know why it's not going.
00:31:45.760 | On Tuesday, I wanna give you a brief overview
00:31:47.760 | that actually a lot happens.
00:31:49.760 | But if you imagine, Pastor Peter Chong explained
00:31:53.760 | that you have to think about it as
00:31:54.760 | Christ goes to Bethany, home base.
00:31:57.760 | Then he walks with the disciples to Jerusalem,
00:31:59.760 | has a lot of things happen,
00:32:01.760 | comes back to home base, et cetera, et cetera.
00:32:03.760 | And so Tuesday morning,
00:32:05.760 | they walk from Bethany to Jerusalem,
00:32:07.760 | and on route, they have a reaction
00:32:10.760 | with the fig tree that was withered.
00:32:12.760 | The second part is that
00:32:14.760 | when Jesus arrives at the temple,
00:32:16.760 | he has a confrontation with the religious leaders,
00:32:19.760 | and that's where I'll spend the bulk of tonight
00:32:22.760 | reviewing and rehearsing and remembering.
00:32:24.760 | I also believe that the situation
00:32:26.760 | where Jesus watches the rich give,
00:32:29.760 | just a small portion of the riches,
00:32:31.760 | but sees the poor woman give out of her poverty,
00:32:34.760 | that also takes place on this day.
00:32:36.760 | And then finally, in the afternoon,
00:32:38.760 | the late afternoon, as they're leaving Jerusalem,
00:32:41.760 | they stop on the Mount of Olives,
00:32:44.760 | and they look at the temple,
00:32:46.760 | and there he takes the opportunity
00:32:48.760 | to teach the disciples something
00:32:51.760 | incredibly important about what's to expect.
00:32:53.760 | So let's walk through these one by one.
00:32:56.760 | Click.
00:32:58.760 | The first is gonna be the reaction to the fig tree.
00:33:02.760 | (coughs)
00:33:04.760 | I'll take a brief moment to comment on it,
00:33:07.760 | that Jesus and the disciples, as they're walking,
00:33:10.760 | pass by the same tree that Jesus cursed.
00:33:13.760 | Why?
00:33:15.760 | He cursed it because it was in full bloom.
00:33:18.760 | And then why?
00:33:20.760 | Because even though it was in full bloom,
00:33:21.760 | there was no fruit.
00:33:23.760 | And he cursed it and said,
00:33:25.760 | "Never again will you bear."
00:33:27.760 | Now, what happens in this story
00:33:29.760 | is in Mark chapter 11, verse 20 through 25,
00:33:32.760 | I'll read the portion for us, okay?
00:33:34.760 | It says, "As they were passing by in the morning,
00:33:37.760 | "they saw the fig tree withered up from the roots.
00:33:40.760 | "Being reminded, Peter said to him,
00:33:42.760 | "'Rabbi, look!
00:33:44.760 | "'The fig tree which you cursed has withered!'"
00:33:48.760 | And then Jesus answered them,
00:33:50.760 | saying, "Have faith in God."
00:33:53.760 | This interaction is quite strange in some ways
00:33:56.760 | because Apostle Peter, he's surprised.
00:33:59.760 | He is impressed.
00:34:01.760 | He's saying, "Wow, look!
00:34:03.760 | "It didn't just wither from the branches
00:34:05.760 | "or any of the rotten fruit.
00:34:07.760 | "It withered from the ground."
00:34:09.760 | Something completely unusual.
00:34:11.760 | And then Jesus' answer is, "Have faith."
00:34:14.760 | Okay, so what's happening here?
00:34:17.760 | There are two things happening here
00:34:18.760 | and I just wanna highlight them for you.
00:34:20.760 | Next, please.
00:34:22.760 | The two things are that Jesus has challenged
00:34:24.760 | the disciples to have more faith
00:34:26.760 | because that is what is at hand
00:34:28.760 | with this case study and the story at large.
00:34:32.760 | Specifically for the disciples,
00:34:34.760 | I mean, just on Saturday,
00:34:36.760 | they had a meal with Mary
00:34:38.760 | and the brother Lazarus who was dead.
00:34:41.760 | That story ran through the whole city.
00:34:46.760 | They experienced miracles after miracles
00:34:49.760 | and then here he is, surprised and shocked.
00:34:52.760 | Now, giving him sympathy, any miracle is surprising.
00:34:55.760 | Anything outside of the norm is shocking.
00:34:57.760 | But Jesus says, "What I want you to have is faith
00:35:01.760 | "because much greater things are going to happen."
00:35:03.760 | And secondly, the main problem then, Jesus shows,
00:35:07.760 | is that there is a deadness.
00:35:09.760 | There is an absolute void of faith within Jerusalem,
00:35:13.760 | especially its leaders.
00:35:15.760 | And so walking into Jerusalem,
00:35:16.760 | he is going to show them just how dead it is.
00:35:20.760 | It's absolutely Ichabod.
00:35:22.760 | There is no spirit.
00:35:24.760 | So the tension started to arise from the previous section
00:35:28.760 | and then we go into the second part
00:35:30.760 | of the events of this day.
00:35:32.760 | So as they're walking, they walk into Jerusalem
00:35:34.760 | and once they enter,
00:35:36.760 | my guess is there are already crowds waiting for him.
00:35:39.760 | There was a commotion.
00:35:41.760 | There was a stir.
00:35:44.760 | People were already planning, remember?
00:35:45.760 | It said that they were seeking for opportunities
00:35:47.760 | and so they were gearing up.
00:35:50.760 | They had schemes to talk to each other
00:35:52.760 | and plan their words and have prosecutors
00:35:54.760 | and lawyers and everybody
00:35:56.760 | and they were challenging Jesus.
00:35:58.760 | Now, what I'd like to do is ask you
00:36:00.760 | to turn your Bibles to Matthew 21
00:36:02.760 | and we'll together walk through this segment of scripture,
00:36:06.760 | walking through the many challenges
00:36:09.760 | that they threw at our Lord Jesus Christ.
00:36:13.760 | The many challenges.
00:36:14.760 | And so as you turn there,
00:36:16.760 | I want us to think on Tuesday,
00:36:18.760 | if you're thinking about one thing,
00:36:20.760 | even though there's a lot,
00:36:22.760 | essentially what you have is the confrontation
00:36:24.760 | as a main bulk
00:36:26.760 | and then as they leave, his teaching.
00:36:29.760 | So this part here is very important
00:36:32.760 | about the challenges that the leaders,
00:36:34.760 | the religious leaders give
00:36:36.760 | and the very first challenge
00:36:38.760 | is a challenge to his authority.
00:36:40.760 | If you look, starting from verse 23,
00:36:42.760 | I'm just going to read small bits of it
00:36:43.760 | just for the sake of time.
00:36:45.760 | It says in verse 23,
00:36:47.760 | when he entered the temple,
00:36:49.760 | the chief priests,
00:36:51.760 | so we're talking about the head honchos, okay,
00:36:53.760 | and the elders of the people came to him
00:36:55.760 | while he was teaching and said,
00:36:57.760 | by what authority are you doing these things
00:36:59.760 | and who gave you this authority?
00:37:02.760 | Do you think their tone was,
00:37:04.760 | by the way, who gave you the authority?
00:37:06.760 | Where did you learn this stuff?
00:37:08.760 | No, no, no.
00:37:11.760 | It was a confrontation
00:37:12.760 | because they wanted Jesus to stop.
00:37:14.760 | They wanted him to stop the worship.
00:37:16.760 | They wanted him to stop the people following
00:37:18.760 | because he was a threat
00:37:20.760 | to both their authority and their livelihood.
00:37:22.760 | What's interesting about this
00:37:24.760 | is as they were scheming,
00:37:26.760 | you know that Jesus replied and said,
00:37:28.760 | you know what, you guys aren't going to answer me,
00:37:30.760 | I'm not going to answer you either, right?
00:37:32.760 | This is not a real conversation
00:37:34.760 | because the point is,
00:37:36.760 | the point that they're making
00:37:38.760 | is he has no spiritual authority,
00:37:40.760 | he's not one of them.
00:37:41.760 | So then,
00:37:43.760 | from that confrontation,
00:37:45.760 | he starts to teach
00:37:47.760 | what he gets right up in their face
00:37:49.760 | with several parables.
00:37:51.760 | He uses several parables
00:37:53.760 | to confront the religious leaders.
00:37:55.760 | Thank you, that's the slide I wanted.
00:37:57.760 | There's three parables he uses
00:37:59.760 | and the first one I'm going to read in full.
00:38:01.760 | Please take a look at Matthew 21 verse 28.
00:38:04.760 | Verse 28.
00:38:06.760 | And as you scan their eyes there,
00:38:09.760 | look at the parable of the two sons
00:38:10.760 | and think about how
00:38:13.760 | poignant and confrontational the tone is.
00:38:16.760 | But what do you think?
00:38:18.760 | A man has two sons
00:38:20.760 | and he came to the first and said,
00:38:22.760 | "Son, go work today in the vineyard."
00:38:24.760 | And he answered, "I will not."
00:38:26.760 | But afterward, he regretted it and went.
00:38:29.760 | The man came to the second
00:38:31.760 | and said the same thing.
00:38:33.760 | And he answered, "I will, sir."
00:38:35.760 | But he did not go.
00:38:38.760 | He went to the will of his father
00:38:39.760 | and they said the first.
00:38:42.760 | Jesus said to them,
00:38:44.760 | "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors
00:38:46.760 | and the prostitutes
00:38:48.760 | will get into the kingdom of God
00:38:50.760 | before the son?"
00:38:52.760 | No, he said, "Before you."
00:38:54.760 | For John came to you
00:38:56.760 | in the way of righteousness
00:38:58.760 | and you did not believe him.
00:39:00.760 | But the tax collectors and the prostitutes
00:39:02.760 | did believe him and you seeing this
00:39:04.760 | did not even feel remorse afterward
00:39:07.760 | as to believe him.
00:39:08.760 | Wow!
00:39:10.760 | Straight up saying,
00:39:12.760 | you are brazen in your sin.
00:39:14.760 | Even after knowing that
00:39:16.760 | John the Baptist is of God,
00:39:18.760 | that he's a prophet,
00:39:20.760 | that he's a forerunner,
00:39:22.760 | you didn't even remorse.
00:39:24.760 | You didn't even turn red.
00:39:26.760 | And so what Jesus is doing
00:39:28.760 | is such a poignant confrontation
00:39:30.760 | against the religious leaders.
00:39:32.760 | In the next parable,
00:39:34.760 | starting from verse 33,
00:39:36.760 | Jesus tells the parable
00:39:37.760 | of the landowner.
00:39:39.760 | Maybe another way to put it is
00:39:41.760 | Jesus tells the parable
00:39:43.760 | of the vicious and wicked tenants.
00:39:45.760 | The story goes that the landowner
00:39:47.760 | rented his land
00:39:49.760 | and upon sending his servants
00:39:51.760 | to go and collect,
00:39:53.760 | upon sending his servants
00:39:55.760 | to go and scope out the land,
00:39:57.760 | they mocked them,
00:39:59.760 | they roughhoused them
00:40:01.760 | and some of them they killed.
00:40:03.760 | Now take a look over at verse 42.
00:40:05.760 | Jesus says,
00:40:06.760 | "The stone which the builders rejected,
00:40:08.760 | "this became the chief cornerstone.
00:40:10.760 | "This came about from the Lord
00:40:12.760 | "and it is marvelous in our eyes.
00:40:14.760 | "Therefore I say to you,
00:40:16.760 | "the kingdom of God will be taken away from you
00:40:18.760 | "and given to a people
00:40:20.760 | "producing fruit of it.
00:40:22.760 | "And he who falls on this stone
00:40:24.760 | "will be broken to pieces.
00:40:26.760 | "But on whomever it falls,
00:40:28.760 | "it will scatter him like dust."
00:40:30.760 | When the chief priests
00:40:32.760 | and the Pharisees heard his parables,
00:40:34.760 | they were speaking about them.
00:40:35.760 | When they sought to seize him,
00:40:37.760 | they feared the people
00:40:39.760 | because they considered him
00:40:41.760 | to be a prophet.
00:40:43.760 | Take a moment right there
00:40:45.760 | and see just the ridiculousness.
00:40:47.760 | The religious leaders,
00:40:49.760 | they know that they themselves
00:40:51.760 | feel this man is a prophet.
00:40:53.760 | What's more,
00:40:55.760 | they know that the people,
00:40:57.760 | the mass at large
00:40:59.760 | know that this man is a prophet.
00:41:01.760 | But their hearts are filled
00:41:03.760 | with this man.
00:41:04.760 | Take a moment now
00:41:06.760 | to pause and say wow.
00:41:08.760 | Just a sheer determination of Christ.
00:41:10.760 | One of the things that
00:41:12.760 | just boils our insides
00:41:14.760 | is to see hypocrisy.
00:41:16.760 | Arrogance.
00:41:18.760 | People who are on the outside
00:41:20.760 | have a veneer of righteousness
00:41:22.760 | but inside they have wicked intention.
00:41:24.760 | Jesus sees all of it.
00:41:26.760 | Okay, the next parable.
00:41:28.760 | The parable starts in chapter 22
00:41:31.760 | and I'm just going to give you a summary of it.
00:41:32.760 | You guys know the parable goes
00:41:34.760 | God prepares a feast.
00:41:36.760 | The master prepares the wedding banquet
00:41:39.760 | and then he sends his servants to call
00:41:41.760 | but they are unwilling.
00:41:43.760 | They pay no attention
00:41:45.760 | and then ultimately they rough house
00:41:47.760 | and kill those servants too.
00:41:49.760 | And therefore Jesus ends that parable
00:41:51.760 | with many are called
00:41:53.760 | but few are chosen.
00:41:55.760 | And all of this he was saying
00:41:57.760 | because he was pointing the finger at them
00:42:00.760 | Take a moment
00:42:01.760 | to think if you were one of the disciples.
00:42:03.760 | Right?
00:42:05.760 | You're hearing this
00:42:07.760 | and you're probably feeling all weird
00:42:09.760 | like oh my gosh he said what
00:42:11.760 | to the leaders.
00:42:13.760 | Doesn't he know they can throw us out?
00:42:15.760 | Doesn't he know they can kill us?
00:42:17.760 | Maybe one of them tugged on his sleeve
00:42:19.760 | like too much, too much, right?
00:42:21.760 | But what Jesus is doing
00:42:23.760 | is he is calling out
00:42:25.760 | all of the emptiness of faith.
00:42:29.760 | We began talking about
00:42:30.760 | the tree that bore no fruit of faith
00:42:32.760 | and here Jesus is just revealing
00:42:34.760 | look how empty it truly is.
00:42:37.760 | Now I think about this a little bit
00:42:40.760 | and I take a moment to
00:42:42.760 | again just appreciate Jesus'
00:42:44.760 | sheer determination.
00:42:46.760 | Now again I know that
00:42:48.760 | or I know that Jesus
00:42:50.760 | he has the mind of the Lord
00:42:52.760 | he has the words of God
00:42:54.760 | he has the spirit, all of that.
00:42:56.760 | But as I was studying
00:42:58.760 | I remember thinking man
00:42:59.760 | Jesus is 33, right?
00:43:01.760 | He is looked upon from the elders
00:43:04.760 | as just a young man.
00:43:06.760 | I'm only 41.
00:43:08.760 | I look at 30 year olds as young men, right?
00:43:11.760 | Here he is standing up
00:43:13.760 | to the chief priest
00:43:15.760 | the scribes, the Pharisees, and more
00:43:17.760 | saying you, this is you, right?
00:43:20.760 | And so we appreciate his determination.
00:43:23.760 | Now there is another layer
00:43:25.760 | just adding it on
00:43:27.760 | there is another layer of the confrontation
00:43:28.760 | between him and the leaders.
00:43:30.760 | The leaders turn their strategy
00:43:32.760 | and now they have poignant tests
00:43:34.760 | and examinations of this prophet.
00:43:36.760 | First come the Pharisees.
00:43:38.760 | As you know there is actually
00:43:40.760 | a lot of different sects of leaders
00:43:42.760 | within the Jewish tradition.
00:43:44.760 | You have the Pharisees who can be seen as
00:43:46.760 | the most, most religious.
00:43:48.760 | And then you can almost think
00:43:50.760 | there are liberals who are religious
00:43:52.760 | but they kind of compromise
00:43:54.760 | with civilian politics
00:43:56.760 | they are more aristocratic
00:43:57.760 | they are just wealthy, ruling class
00:43:59.760 | and that's the Sadducees.
00:44:01.760 | They threw out a bunch of their tradition
00:44:03.760 | they threw out a bunch of their religious belief
00:44:05.760 | they didn't believe in the resurrection
00:44:07.760 | they didn't believe in the heavenlies
00:44:09.760 | but both of them essentially take turns
00:44:11.760 | challenging Christ.
00:44:13.760 | First comes the challenge of the Pharisees.
00:44:15.760 | In their rage, in their desire
00:44:17.760 | to just trap him
00:44:19.760 | they have this test.
00:44:21.760 | Starting from chapter 2
00:44:23.760 | sorry, 22 verse 15.
00:44:25.760 | Chapter 22 verse 15.
00:44:26.760 | It says in verse 15
00:44:28.760 | "Then the Pharisees went and plotted together
00:44:30.760 | how they might trap him
00:44:32.760 | and what he said."
00:44:34.760 | Scan your eyes to verse 17
00:44:36.760 | "Tell us then, what do you think?
00:44:38.760 | Is it lawful to give a poll tax
00:44:40.760 | to Caesar or not?"
00:44:42.760 | But Jesus perceived their malice
00:44:45.760 | and said, "Why are you testing me
00:44:47.760 | you hypocrites?"
00:44:49.760 | These guys were playing the sides
00:44:51.760 | the sides of the masses.
00:44:54.760 | They knew what the people would say
00:44:55.760 | right?
00:44:57.760 | But then they also knew
00:44:59.760 | what the religious people would say.
00:45:01.760 | But Jesus gives such a poignant response.
00:45:03.760 | Then the next group, the Sadducees come
00:45:05.760 | starting from verse 23
00:45:07.760 | and they ask a sequence of two questions.
00:45:09.760 | The first, they've got this long story.
00:45:11.760 | They ask
00:45:13.760 | in verse 23
00:45:15.760 | "On the day, some Sadducees
00:45:17.760 | who say there is no resurrection
00:45:19.760 | came to Jesus and questioned him
00:45:21.760 | asking
00:45:23.760 | "Teacher,
00:45:24.760 | Moses said if a man dies
00:45:26.760 | having no children
00:45:28.760 | his brother as next of kin
00:45:30.760 | shall marry his wife
00:45:32.760 | and raise up children for his brothers."
00:45:34.760 | And then the whole scenario
00:45:36.760 | hypothetical scenario goes
00:45:38.760 | "What happens if that brother dies
00:45:40.760 | and that brother dies
00:45:42.760 | and there's seven brothers?
00:45:44.760 | Whose wife is she?"
00:45:46.760 | And Jesus is looking at them
00:45:48.760 | as you don't even believe in the resurrection.
00:45:50.760 | You don't even know the scriptures.
00:45:52.760 | You don't even know the commandment.
00:45:53.760 | You guys know that well
00:45:55.760 | that on verse 35
00:45:57.760 | one of them, a lawyer
00:45:59.760 | asked him a question testing him
00:46:01.760 | "Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law?"
00:46:03.760 | Right?
00:46:05.760 | And then he in such succinct
00:46:07.760 | and powerful
00:46:09.760 | and authoritative way
00:46:11.760 | gave answers to all of their questions.
00:46:13.760 | And then in verse 46
00:46:15.760 | it says "No one was able to answer him a word
00:46:17.760 | nor did anyone dare
00:46:19.760 | from that day on
00:46:21.760 | to answer him."
00:46:22.760 | I think about what Jesus is doing
00:46:24.760 | and again I want to highlight
00:46:26.760 | he is in the face
00:46:28.760 | of great great depravity
00:46:30.760 | and an absence of faith
00:46:32.760 | amongst people
00:46:34.760 | who claim the name of Yahweh.
00:46:36.760 | There is great disappointment
00:46:38.760 | in his heart
00:46:40.760 | but he's still determined to teach.
00:46:42.760 | There is incredible
00:46:44.760 | animosity that he's receiving
00:46:46.760 | confrontation
00:46:48.760 | jealousy
00:46:50.760 | hypocrisy
00:46:51.760 | and then yet he's so determined
00:46:53.760 | to keep on going.
00:46:55.760 | One of the thoughts that came to my mind
00:46:57.760 | and it was
00:46:59.760 | you know that kind of
00:47:01.760 | just pensive question
00:47:03.760 | if I were Jesus
00:47:05.760 | if I walked into Jerusalem
00:47:07.760 | where the temple is there
00:47:09.760 | the people are gathered
00:47:11.760 | there's hordes and hordes
00:47:13.760 | and masses of people
00:47:15.760 | giving sacrifice
00:47:17.760 | and yet all of this is fake
00:47:19.760 | right?
00:47:20.760 | Forget this.
00:47:22.760 | I don't have to answer to you
00:47:24.760 | but our Lord is determined
00:47:26.760 | and he continues to go.
00:47:28.760 | Near the end of the day
00:47:30.760 | I'm going to move now to
00:47:32.760 | the last element of the day
00:47:34.760 | after all of his teaching
00:47:36.760 | after all of the discourse
00:47:38.760 | he's walking out with the disciples
00:47:40.760 | and if you turn to a passage
00:47:42.760 | oh gosh
00:47:44.760 | my numbering is off
00:47:46.760 | and the last one
00:47:48.760 | the second number three
00:47:49.760 | Matthew 23
00:47:51.760 | if I almost skipped it
00:47:53.760 | but Matthew 23
00:47:55.760 | is such a
00:47:57.760 | incredibly
00:47:59.760 | both scary
00:48:00.760 | both intense
00:48:02.760 | rebuke of the religious leaders
00:48:03.760 | and that is when he declares
00:48:05.760 | a woes on them
00:48:06.760 | for what they do
00:48:08.760 | for all the hypocrisy
00:48:09.760 | now I do want to move
00:48:11.760 | into the last element
00:48:13.760 | the Olivet Discourse
00:48:14.760 | so here next slide
00:48:17.760 | Olivet Discourse
00:48:18.760 | and one more
00:48:19.760 | I wanted you to show
00:48:21.760 | that
00:48:22.760 | that little quick picture
00:48:24.760 | if you guys can do a quick
00:48:26.760 | if you notice this
00:48:29.760 | there was high pillars
00:48:31.760 | in the temple
00:48:32.760 | and it would be filled
00:48:33.760 | with people
00:48:34.760 | and as they're walking
00:48:35.760 | my imagination is
00:48:36.760 | people would want
00:48:37.760 | a piece of Jesus
00:48:38.760 | even prior to coming
00:48:40.760 | to this event
00:48:41.760 | if you remember
00:48:42.760 | it was hard for him
00:48:43.760 | to move around
00:48:44.760 | but as they're leaving
00:48:46.760 | go to the next slide please
00:48:47.760 | and one more
00:48:51.760 | if you take a look at
00:48:52.760 | Mark chapter 13
00:48:53.760 | verses 1 through 6
00:48:54.760 | Mark chapter 13
00:48:56.760 | 1 through 6
00:48:57.760 | the disciples were there
00:49:00.760 | hearing the confrontation
00:49:01.760 | hearing all of the
00:49:03.760 | back and forth
00:49:04.760 | between the religious leaders
00:49:05.760 | and Jesus
00:49:06.760 | and yet I think
00:49:08.760 | in some ways
00:49:09.760 | they were still
00:49:10.760 | distracted by
00:49:11.760 | the masses
00:49:12.760 | by the people
00:49:14.760 | the crowds
00:49:15.760 | and also
00:49:16.760 | the glory
00:49:17.760 | of the physical Jerusalem
00:49:18.760 | in 13 verse 1
00:49:21.760 | Mark 13 1
00:49:23.760 | it says
00:49:24.760 | as he was going out
00:49:25.760 | of the temple
00:49:26.760 | one of the disciples
00:49:27.760 | said to him
00:49:28.760 | teacher
00:49:29.760 | behold
00:49:30.760 | what wonderful
00:49:31.760 | stones
00:49:32.760 | and what wonderful
00:49:33.760 | buildings
00:49:34.760 | okay
00:49:35.760 | so
00:49:36.760 | you kind of get my drift
00:49:37.760 | like
00:49:38.760 | they were in there
00:49:39.760 | seeing what
00:49:40.760 | all Jesus was doing
00:49:41.760 | rebuking
00:49:42.760 | the entire institution
00:49:43.760 | rebuking
00:49:44.760 | the familiar practice
00:49:45.760 | coming in
00:49:46.760 | just having
00:49:47.760 | a bazaar
00:49:48.760 | of people trading goods
00:49:49.760 | giving sacrifice
00:49:50.760 | and leaving
00:49:51.760 | and then the disciples
00:49:53.760 | as they're leaving
00:49:54.760 | they're just
00:49:55.760 | enamored by all of it
00:49:56.760 | look at this place
00:49:57.760 | it's beautiful
00:49:59.760 | what is Jesus' response
00:50:01.760 | verse 2
00:50:03.760 | Jesus' response
00:50:04.760 | he said to them
00:50:05.760 | do you see
00:50:06.760 | these great buildings
00:50:07.760 | not one stone
00:50:09.760 | will be left
00:50:10.760 | upon another
00:50:11.760 | which will not be
00:50:12.760 | torn down
00:50:13.760 | as he was sitting
00:50:14.760 | on the Mount of Olives
00:50:15.760 | opposite the temple
00:50:16.760 | Peter
00:50:17.760 | and James
00:50:18.760 | and John
00:50:19.760 | and Andrew
00:50:20.760 | were questioning him privately
00:50:21.760 | please tell us
00:50:22.760 | when will these things be
00:50:23.760 | and what will be the sign
00:50:24.760 | when all these things
00:50:25.760 | are going to be fulfilled
00:50:26.760 | and Jesus began
00:50:28.760 | to say to them
00:50:29.760 | see to it
00:50:30.760 | that no one
00:50:31.760 | misleads you
00:50:32.760 | many will come
00:50:33.760 | in my name
00:50:34.760 | saying
00:50:35.760 | I
00:50:36.760 | am
00:50:37.760 | he
00:50:38.760 | and will mislead
00:50:39.760 | many
00:50:40.760 | think about that
00:50:43.760 | I mean
00:50:44.760 | my guess is
00:50:45.760 | again the disciples
00:50:46.760 | had anticipation
00:50:47.760 | we know
00:50:48.760 | there's glory to come
00:50:49.760 | we know there's
00:50:51.760 | victory
00:50:52.760 | in the Messiah
00:50:53.760 | when is it going to happen
00:50:54.760 | even though
00:50:55.760 | he's literally saying
00:50:56.760 | the stones
00:50:57.760 | will be unturned
00:50:58.760 | and then
00:50:59.760 | Jesus' next words
00:51:00.760 | are so many
00:51:01.760 | are going to fall away
00:51:02.760 | turn your Bibles over
00:51:04.760 | to Matthew 24
00:51:05.760 | so
00:51:07.760 | that
00:51:08.760 | section
00:51:09.760 | you know
00:51:10.760 | in Matthew
00:51:11.760 | the discourse
00:51:12.760 | is quite long
00:51:13.760 | but I want to read to us
00:51:14.760 | a portion of it
00:51:15.760 | in Matthew 24
00:51:16.760 | starting from
00:51:17.760 | verse 6 through 14
00:51:18.760 | and it says
00:51:21.760 | you will be hearing
00:51:22.760 | of wars
00:51:23.760 | and rumors of wars
00:51:24.760 | see that you are not
00:51:26.760 | frightened
00:51:27.760 | for those things
00:51:28.760 | must take place
00:51:29.760 | but that is
00:51:30.760 | not yet the end
00:51:31.760 | for nation
00:51:32.760 | will rise against nation
00:51:33.760 | and kingdom
00:51:34.760 | against kingdom
00:51:35.760 | and in various places
00:51:36.760 | there will be famines
00:51:37.760 | and earthquakes
00:51:38.760 | but all these things
00:51:39.760 | are merely
00:51:40.760 | warnings of birth pains
00:51:41.760 | then they will deliver you
00:51:43.760 | to tribulation
00:51:44.760 | and will kill you
00:51:45.760 | and you will be hated
00:51:46.760 | by all the nations
00:51:47.760 | because of my name
00:51:48.760 | at that time
00:51:50.760 | many will fall away
00:51:51.760 | and will betray one another
00:51:52.760 | and hate one another
00:51:53.760 | many false prophets
00:51:54.760 | will arise
00:51:55.760 | and will mislead many
00:51:56.760 | because lawlessness
00:51:58.760 | has increased
00:51:59.760 | most people's love
00:52:00.760 | will go cold
00:52:01.760 | but the one who endures
00:52:03.760 | to the end
00:52:04.760 | will be saved
00:52:05.760 | this gospel of the kingdom
00:52:07.760 | shall be preached
00:52:08.760 | in the whole world
00:52:09.760 | as a testimony
00:52:10.760 | to all the nations
00:52:11.760 | and then the end
00:52:13.760 | will come
00:52:14.760 | I want you guys
00:52:16.760 | to think about the fact
00:52:17.760 | that this is
00:52:18.760 | such a pivotal
00:52:20.760 | massive sermon
00:52:21.760 | out of love
00:52:22.760 | for his disciples
00:52:23.760 | and out of love
00:52:24.760 | for the disciples
00:52:25.760 | who would come after them
00:52:26.760 | to prepare the way
00:52:28.760 | what is life
00:52:30.760 | going to be like
00:52:31.760 | for us in our generation
00:52:32.760 | these words
00:52:36.760 | to some of us
00:52:37.760 | obviously seem
00:52:38.760 | too intense
00:52:39.760 | too far fetched
00:52:41.760 | but let it be a reminder
00:52:44.760 | that this is actually
00:52:45.760 | the generation
00:52:46.760 | we are in
00:52:47.760 | and on the next slide
00:52:49.760 | I want to summarize
00:52:50.760 | some of the themes
00:52:51.760 | for us
00:52:52.760 | when we have
00:52:53.760 | expectation
00:52:54.760 | how is life
00:52:56.760 | going to be like
00:52:57.760 | moving forward
00:52:58.760 | what is the next
00:52:59.760 | 20 years
00:53:00.760 | 30 years
00:53:01.760 | 40 years
00:53:02.760 | what is the generation
00:53:03.760 | going to look like
00:53:04.760 | for our children
00:53:05.760 | yes it is a blessing
00:53:06.760 | to be able to live
00:53:07.760 | in peace
00:53:08.760 | prosperity
00:53:09.760 | to not be at
00:53:11.760 | animosity
00:53:12.760 | or enmity
00:53:13.760 | with the nations around you
00:53:14.760 | when there is no wars
00:53:15.760 | etc
00:53:16.760 | but is that
00:53:17.760 | what Christ
00:53:18.760 | told us would come
00:53:19.760 | no Christ said
00:53:21.760 | I want you to be ready
00:53:23.760 | I am going to empower you
00:53:25.760 | with the spirit
00:53:26.760 | and I want you to be ready
00:53:27.760 | anticipate the fatigue
00:53:29.760 | and the tiredness
00:53:30.760 | anticipate the fruitlessness
00:53:32.760 | anticipate many people
00:53:34.760 | falling away
00:53:35.760 | anticipate people's
00:53:36.760 | love growing cold
00:53:37.760 | anticipate lawlessness
00:53:38.760 | to go up
00:53:39.760 | and yes
00:53:40.760 | even painful persecution
00:53:41.760 | for you
00:53:42.760 | but the question is
00:53:44.760 | are we so surprised
00:53:46.760 | by any failure
00:53:47.760 | so shocked
00:53:49.760 | by disappointment
00:53:50.760 | so shocked
00:53:51.760 | that we are not being
00:53:52.760 | as fruitful as we ought to be
00:53:53.760 | I mean
00:53:55.760 | when we go out
00:53:56.760 | and evangelize
00:53:57.760 | to the world
00:53:58.760 | to marketers
00:53:59.760 | to business people
00:54:00.760 | we look like
00:54:01.760 | another failure right
00:54:02.760 | because Christ has said
00:54:05.760 | we are going to glorify God
00:54:06.760 | by going and preaching
00:54:07.760 | his name
00:54:08.760 | but we know
00:54:09.760 | that underneath the power of God
00:54:11.760 | the kingdom will endure
00:54:12.760 | amen
00:54:14.760 | and though it be a remnant
00:54:15.760 | though it be a small people
00:54:17.760 | God said
00:54:19.760 | he is going to cause
00:54:20.760 | his gospel to go forth
00:54:21.760 | and part of that will be
00:54:23.760 | a judgment against them
00:54:24.760 | and so by way of conclusion
00:54:26.760 | we think about this day
00:54:28.760 | Tuesday
00:54:29.760 | and in some sense
00:54:31.760 | there is a lot
00:54:32.760 | of communication
00:54:33.760 | dialogue
00:54:34.760 | preaching
00:54:35.760 | parables
00:54:36.760 | and then a special sermon
00:54:37.760 | to his own disciples
00:54:38.760 | on the Mount of Olives
00:54:39.760 | but all this day
00:54:41.760 | has such
00:54:42.760 | a tone
00:54:44.760 | of where Christ
00:54:45.760 | is at conflict
00:54:46.760 | with the world
00:54:47.760 | Christ is at conflict
00:54:49.760 | with the religious system
00:54:50.760 | Christ is at conflict
00:54:51.760 | with the
00:54:52.760 | hypocritical leaders
00:54:53.760 | of the day
00:54:54.760 | and then Christ says
00:54:56.760 | I want you to know
00:54:57.760 | then what's coming for you
00:54:59.760 | I want you to understand
00:55:01.760 | how to anticipate
00:55:02.760 | well
00:55:03.760 | and be prepared
00:55:04.760 | for all the things to come
00:55:05.760 | let's take a moment
00:55:06.760 | to pray
00:55:07.760 | Heavenly Father
00:55:15.760 | you have said
00:55:17.760 | multiple times
00:55:18.760 | in the scriptures
00:55:19.760 | that those
00:55:21.760 | who desire
00:55:23.760 | and long for the kingdom
00:55:24.760 | of heaven
00:55:25.760 | will see themselves
00:55:26.760 | lose their lives
00:55:27.760 | and what's more
00:55:30.760 | that there is going to be
00:55:31.760 | great suffering
00:55:32.760 | for every generation
00:55:33.760 | has been
00:55:34.760 | a dark
00:55:35.760 | and perverted generation
00:55:36.760 | and so God
00:55:38.760 | I pray that this will cause us
00:55:39.760 | to be so sober
00:55:40.760 | as we walk
00:55:41.760 | knowing Lord
00:55:43.760 | that
00:55:44.760 | you
00:55:45.760 | through your determination
00:55:46.760 | through your power
00:55:47.760 | and strength
00:55:48.760 | you blaze this trail
00:55:49.760 | and as we long
00:55:51.760 | to follow in your footsteps
00:55:52.760 | yes sometimes
00:55:54.760 | suffering will come
00:55:56.760 | and persecution will come
00:55:57.760 | I pray Father God
00:55:59.760 | that we not
00:56:00.760 | look for strength
00:56:01.760 | from the world
00:56:02.760 | where
00:56:03.760 | money
00:56:04.760 | resources
00:56:05.760 | and people
00:56:06.760 | become our safety
00:56:07.760 | but I pray God
00:56:08.760 | that we would have
00:56:09.760 | the power of Christ
00:56:10.760 | and I pray Lord
00:56:12.760 | we would be strong
00:56:13.760 | in truth
00:56:14.760 | in the gospel
00:56:15.760 | in the spirit
00:56:16.760 | in prayer
00:56:17.760 | and everything that comes
00:56:18.760 | from our God
00:56:19.760 | I ask Lord that as we remember
00:56:21.760 | Christ's journey
00:56:22.760 | you would help us
00:56:23.760 | to appreciate him
00:56:24.760 | Lord that he
00:56:26.760 | did not cower
00:56:27.760 | from
00:56:28.760 | the masses
00:56:29.760 | and he did not cower
00:56:30.760 | from those in authority
00:56:31.760 | but God
00:56:32.760 | he proved himself
00:56:33.760 | to be one
00:56:34.760 | high above
00:56:35.760 | we thank you it's in Christ's name we pray
00:56:36.760 | amen
00:56:37.760 | why don't we all stand
00:56:40.760 | for our closing praise
00:56:41.760 | (music)
00:57:05.760 | I hear the Savior say
00:57:10.760 | thy strength indeed is small
00:57:15.760 | child of weakness
00:57:18.760 | watch and pray
00:57:20.760 | find in me
00:57:22.760 | thine all in all
00:57:25.760 | cause Jesus paid it all
00:57:31.760 | all to him I owe
00:57:37.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
00:57:41.760 | he washed it white as snow
00:57:46.760 | (music)
00:58:04.760 | Lord now indeed I find
00:58:08.760 | thy power in thine alone
00:58:13.760 | can change the leper's spots
00:58:18.760 | and melt the heart of stone
00:58:23.760 | cause Jesus paid it all
00:58:30.760 | all to him I owe
00:58:34.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
00:58:39.760 | he washed it white as snow
00:58:44.760 | (music)
00:59:02.760 | and when before the throne
00:59:06.760 | I stand in him complete
00:59:12.760 | Jesus died my soul to save
00:59:16.760 | my lips shall still repeat
00:59:22.760 | cause Jesus paid it all
00:59:27.760 | all to him I owe
00:59:32.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
00:59:38.760 | he washed it white as snow
00:59:42.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
00:59:47.760 | he washed it white as snow
00:59:52.760 | he washed it white as snow
00:59:57.760 | he washed it white as snow
01:00:03.760 | (music)
01:00:10.760 | Oh praise the one who paid my debt
01:00:15.760 | and raised this life up from the dead
01:00:20.760 | Oh praise the one who paid my debt
01:00:25.760 | and raised this life up from the dead
01:00:31.760 | Oh praise the one who paid my debt
01:00:35.760 | and raised this life up from the dead
01:00:40.760 | Oh praise the one who paid my debt
01:00:45.760 | and raised this life up from the dead
01:00:52.760 | cause Jesus paid it all
01:00:59.760 | all to him I owe
01:01:03.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
01:01:08.760 | he washed it white as snow
01:01:13.760 | sin had left a crimson stain
01:01:19.760 | he washed it white as snow
01:01:28.760 | Amen. Let's pray together to close.
01:01:30.760 | Our God, first and foremost we again want to say thank you, thank you.
01:01:35.760 | I thank you God that you meticulously accomplished your will.
01:01:40.760 | Both confronting and stirring up those who are the enemies of God
01:01:45.760 | and that ultimately that even at their hand you'd be persecuted and to give up your life.
01:01:50.760 | We know God that all of this is under your sovereignty.
01:01:55.760 | You're so sovereign that God you use all of that to your glory.
01:01:59.760 | And so help us to have faith that no matter what's going on in our lives
01:02:04.760 | and even if we cannot give reason or rationale for the things that happen
01:02:09.760 | help us to have so much trust in your sovereignty that we are strong.
01:02:13.760 | That we can walk with the Lord.
01:02:16.760 | And though God we sometimes feel weakness and we walk by sight
01:02:20.760 | would you have mercy on us and help us Lord God to persevere.
01:02:24.760 | We thank you this day it's in Christ's name. Amen.
01:02:26.760 | If you would take a moment to just sit down
01:02:29.760 | and then I do have just a couple announcements, important announcements for the week.
