all right good evening everybody uh welcome to praise and prayer uh we do this uh as we know once a month or so, and we gather together as a church to pray together, to remember how we had like four running years of the same theme, where it's just pray, pray, pray. We don't want to forget that. We haven't left praise and prayer in the dust because of that. This is one of the most important things that we can do, and we know how difficult and how much we wrestle with something like prayer and so uh it is such a such a happy time to be able to come together uh to pray together um and so i hope that even though we do it so often that we'd be able to come not do this so habitually uh but uh that this would be something very fresh for us that would refresh us that we'd be able to spend time together uh in personal prayer um so uh i'll give instruction and things like that but there is a place in the front if you'd like to come to kneel, that you can find any place in this sanctuary to pray if you need a little bit more space. And at the end, we'll be gathering together in smaller groups to be able to pray with one another. So before we do that, I'll open up this time. I will sing a few songs and then we'll go into God's word together. Let's pray.

Father, we're so reminded every time we kind of take a look out at what's going on in the world, anytime we take a look in at what's going on inside of our own homes, our church, our hearts, God, that there is no hope anywhere we look except in Christ. And so, Father, we come to the only place we can. We come to you, God, because we know it's a facade that we think we're in control of our lives. We know, God, that we are so powerless, so weak. And so it is the most logical, the most sane thing for us to be able to gather together to pray to you. I pray, God, that we would make use of such a gift given. And that our desire would be to walk and commune with you, our Father. And that our joy would be found in knowing that you walk with us and that you are in sovereign control of all things that are going on in our lives.

So I pray, God, for a rectified heart, a heart that comes before you, that sings these praises, remembering and knowing who you are, that we might draw near to you, and, God, that our prayers would be received by you, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Let us all rise as we sing these prayer songs together. Strength will rise. Strength will rise as we wait upon the low. We will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord, strength or as is, we wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord. Our God, you reign forever, our hope, our strong deliverer.

You are the everlasting God, the everlasting God. You do not think you will grow weary. Strength will rise. Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord. We will wait upon the Lord. And when He calls me, it will be paradise, the space forever to be whole, the space forever to be whole. His face forever to be whole Amen, you may be seated.

All right, well, we're going to be looking at Luke chapter 22, verse 39 through 46 tonight. That's Luke chapter 22, verse 39 through 46. And he came out and proceeded, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. When he arrived at the place, he said to them, pray that you may not enter into temptation. And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and began to pray saying father if you are willing remove this cup from me yet not my will but yours be done and he withdrew from them about a stone's throw and now an angel from heaven appeared to him strengthening him and being in agony he was praying very fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down upon the ground when he arose from prayer he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow and said to them why are you sleeping get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation. Father, I pray that our prayers would not be a religious talk.

God, even as we sing, God, we long to one day behold you. God, one day we will see you face to face. And God, that is what we are called to every time we gather together. God, to long for the return of our Christ, of our King. God, we long to be near you. Father, we see too much in this world. God, if you are not near us, we can't stand. We can't continue. So, Father, I pray that these prayers would be so rich, would be times of such joy and fighting and fervency. One where regardless of whether things are going well or not, God, that because you are there, it is good. And so, God, I pray that as we look at Christ in his hardest time, that we would be encouraged to pray and to live the same.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Well, we've taken some time to go through the Lord's Prayer. Pastor Peter took us through a three-week series. And we started reciting the Lord's Prayer, and I hope that it's been as rich for you as it has been for me, as I think through, because we were able to just piece by piece take that Lord's Prayer apart, and then being able to pray that, it's been so good. And I hope that our church can remember, as we're implementing that, as we're doing that, that we are called to that same heart. It's been such a good time for me to reflect and not only just understand what prayer is, But even as we heard that that's the purpose of our lives that we're going through.

When we pray, we're praying the purpose of our lives. And then when we're praying, we're also praying our heart's greatest desires. And so our prayers aren't just things that we attach to the end of our day or before meals. And we know, we're very well aware of these things. And yet it's very easy to just kind of seep back into that kind of prayer. We remember that our hearts are meant to be engaged in this. And I wanted to look at Luke 22 because I wanted to see, again, if this is Christ's greatest trial, if this was the place where he prayed his most fervent prayers, then we would see Christ in its most distilled, maybe in its simplest form, understanding his purpose and being able to see so clearly what his desires were as his will aligns with the father's will.

So give us a better gauge of where our hearts are supposed to be in prayer before we spend some time praying together tonight. We're going to look at, this is, I'm going to try to run through this very quickly. It's going to be six, six things that we see. pray without distractions. Pray for a mindset of prayer. Pray your desires. Pray God's will. Pray fervently. Pray repeatedly. And we'll see these six things in this passage. So first, pray without distractions. In Luke chapter 22, verse 39, and he came out and proceeded as was his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. Now, if you look here, there are a few things that stick out. We can pull quite a many things, but as we look at the Mount of Olives, this is some place that he regularly came to in his last days. If you look at Luke 21.37, which was just a chapter before, it says, now during the day he was teaching in the temple, but at evening he would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet.

And he was obviously praying. This was his custom. This was something that he would go to over and over again to meet with his father. He went away from his ministry in Jerusalem. Because whenever he was in ministry, he was engaged in it with people. There were many people who would gather around. There are many people who are there to listen to him, many people who are there to persecute and to attack him. And so he would regularly, customarily have to go and leave all of those things to come to the father, a place where he could be with his father. And so everything that I wanted to look at, I want to bring back to our attention. Do we custom, do we regularly go to our Father? In the busyness of our lives, as we are in our careers and in our work, our schoolwork, we're so busy.

We have so many tasks to take care of, so many errands that need to be done. Maybe even before we came here, there were some errands we had to take care of. Maybe there are things on our lives, things that need to be completed. That bring us great anxiety and stress until we get those things done. We have so many things, so much content to work through. We have our businesses, our places where we want to grow in our skill. There are things that we want to watch and grow in. There are skills that we want to hone. We have hobbies, things that we enjoy. We have children to tend to, and everything gets very, very loud. Many times to get away, we turn to things that will kind of shut those things out, don't we?

We turn to our entertainment, to music, to our hobbies. We throw ourselves into social media, reading news, articles. We fill our schedules and our calendars with meeting with one another, our friends. And even with the good things that we might have, everything gets so filled. And we look at the example that Jesus sets, that even with the busyness of his life, even in his last week, he would go out to spend time with his father because he knew that that's where he would find life. That's where he would find peace. That's where he would be restored in hope. That's where he would be strengthened. And is that what we're going to be doing tonight? Do we go to our Father? Is this something that we would regularly put ourselves in?

And as a church, that's why we regularly set this into our calendar. That we would set apart a time to be with our Father. To pray to him. Sometimes it can feel very unproductive to pray. That it is not the best use of time. But Jesus himself shows that this was the most important thing he could do. In these praise and prayer nights, I hope they're helpful. I know we've gone through so many now. I'm starting to lose count of how many praise and prayers that we've had. But I hope that even tonight, it's such a special time. Because we can come to our Father. Secondly, we pray for a mindset of prayer. We pray for a mindset of prayer. In Luke 22, 40, when he arrived at the place, he said to them, pray that you may not enter into temptation.

So before he goes into the inner garden of Gethsemane to pray, he tasks his disciples that they pray that they might not enter into this thing called temptation. Pastor Peter, again, as he was preaching, he preached through what this meant in the Lord's prayer. Lead us not into temptation. He said, temptation is the battle. That the fight is not just at the line of sin, but the things that might even draw us to that place. So often we think that our battle lies in not sinning. And so we're reminded through this that our prayers are not in just fighting off sin. Because God's will is not only that we just prevent ourselves from sinning. but that we live in the fullness of life. That we're not just towing a line but that we're living in all the abundance of life that God has called us to.

There are great temptations in our lives. In Hebrews 12, verse 1, it says, Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus and we look at something like a race. He says, run with endurance. He says, keep your eyes fixed upon Jesus. But before we could do such a thing, he has these participles that are included in there. He says, if we look at some of the special words here, let us also lay aside every sin. That there is something that must be done. That there's a mindset that needs to be had. That there's something that we have an understanding that these things are going to be there that keep us from God and not only sins, but it says also the encumbrances that so easily entangle us.

The things that might tempt us. All of these things to be shed away. That our desire is not just to look at where are my liberties as Christians. We want His kingdom. And so a mindset of prayer is important to have. And he says, pray that you would not fall or enter into this place of temptation. What are those things that are tempting us? Today, before we pray, I hope that we can apply these things. That Jesus says to pray like this. And he says to pray such a thing like, lead us not into temptation. If we have set ourselves and things around us that are causing us to fall into sin. If there are temptations that we're refusing to do away with, to leave the encumbrances that are so easily entangling us, then can we pray with a clear conscience, saying that we want his kingdom and his will?

If we're not keeping ourselves far away from the traps of the enemy, from the footholds that the enemy has his foot inside of, that we need to pray with a clear conscience tonight for that mindset of prayer. God, I want to do away with anything, anything, anything that will encumber me, anything that has been distracting me, anything that will cause me to have my heart weighed down and removed from you. And so I hope that we can pray like that tonight. Thirdly, pray your desires. Luke 22, 41, And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and began to pray, saying, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. And we look at Jesus, and he is our example. If he is the one we are not called to take our eyes off of, that we must keep our eyes fixed upon him, it says here that Jesus kneels and he prays.

He kneels and he prays. Take note of his posture. Take note of his humble position before his Father. It's good sometimes to take on the posture to lend to our hearts positioning before God. It's natural for our outer bodies to sometimes follow along, right? And so we look and see what Jesus was doing. He was kneeling down. He was not flippantly coming before his Father. It is not just a friend that he was coming across and he's casually having conversation. He was coming to the Father in reverence. He was coming knowing who he was. And this is Jesus himself setting this example for us. And Jesus here is praying in agony and you see him struggling. And you see that struggling that's going on inside of him.

He knows he's facing the hellish wrath of God that's going to fall upon him the very next day. can you imagine how scary that must have been how fearful there's no words to describe what that must have been like he's agonizing and he's coming before the father but he knows he already knows his mission he already knows why he came and he knows the father's heart and so we ask a question. If the Father knows the answer, is it okay to ask our heart's desire? We see Jesus and he does. He comes before the Father and he says, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me because we are called to give him our supplications. In Philippians 4, it says that do not be anxious about anything but and everything by prayer and supplication.

Let your requests be made known to God. And we ask that question, if God knows, is there a need to ask? And the answer to that is yes. We ask. We come before the Father because there's purpose in the battle of prayer. He says, let your requests be made known because there's a purpose in wrestling with God in this, just as Jesus wrestled, that it might clarify his will in our lives, that it might make it crystal clear, that maybe we know the theology, but it needs to sink into our stubborn hearts, that we have to wrestle with God in this. There's purpose in this to activate the yielding that needs to happen, the surrender that we need to come to. We might know the answer, but we are unwilling to yield.

So we wrestle, and we ask the question, Because that's where we are, and the answer comes back to us, and we know, we know. This isn't blind and robotic obedience. It's one where our hearts are making an active choice to struggle and get to the place of obedience. Tonight, I hope that we can pray that way, that we can give our supplications to God, our requests to God, which brings us to our fourth point here. We pray God's will. it doesn't leave us in that place but it says father if you are willing remove this cup from me yet i hope we can circle that word in our hearts yet i have all these feelings i have all these desires and all these thoughts and yet not my will but yours be done because we know we know the difference between us knowing what is the right thing to do and us doing it. We know the difference between our theology and then our obedience. And we can't hide tonight.

We come to God and we see and we wrestle and we open our hearts bare, lay it bare before God. And we say, God, I want your will to be done. Help me. Jesus in Gethsemane, he said, not my will, but your will be done. What if our prayers meant we needed to sacrifice?

What if our prayers weren't us requesting of sovereign God and sovereign God, we have him in our pocket and he is able to give me what I want. What if prayer meant that we needed to yield, to surrender to his will? What if it meant serious consequence for us? When Jesus prays this prayer, imagine when he says, not my will, but your will be done. he was yielding Jesus was surrendering his will and it was at great consequence to himself this is where we wrestle because it means that we need to surrender when we pray we pray our supplications and we wrestle in them and we come to a place where we say our father in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done and so it's at this point we see point five to pray fervently to pray fervently now look at what it says here in verse 43 it's really interesting it's kind of dropped in there now an angel from heaven appeared to him strengthening him oh that's very interesting right it's interesting because this is the Son of God praying to Father God. The Father sends an angel. Why not open the clouds and speak to his very own Son? I want to go into that, but we can't. It says here that an angel was sent. Look at the Father's heart. Angel comes to strengthen Jesus because this is the time of his greatest need, that he knows that prayer doesn't just change everything.

Prayer all of a sudden doesn't make life easier. Prayer many times becomes the start of a battle. And he sends his angel to strengthen his son. And then look at then what happens in verse 44. it doesn't just end there it says and being in agony he was praying very fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down upon the ground you would think that the angel comes and strengthens him and he goes just singing praises to God and saying how good God is but no, Jesus here after being strengthened by the angel falls down on his knees again he is in agony he is praying fervently again and his sweat like drops of blood falling down upon the ground. And so God will strengthen us. And yet many times, this is going to be a battle.

Tonight, I hope that we can battle together. I hope that these prayer times are wrestling with God and that he will strengthen us. He will cause us to persevere. And if we come with a yielded heart, he will give you all the strength that you need to be able to endure what is to come. But we come in obedience and it is not going to be easy and I hope that we can pray. And our last point here, to pray repeatedly. To pray repeatedly in verse 45. When he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow and said to them, why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation. And he's at it again. The same thing again. I think it's the very reason why we had four running years of the same theme.

It's why we come over and over again. And why it is that you don't just come to one praise and prayer. And you go, I don't have to go to the next one. Can you imagine if we held the same seminar every month? You would stop coming, wouldn't you? but we come repeatedly even with the same prayer because there is an effectiveness in this because a prayer is something we battle in we battle in this pray repeatedly he challenged challenges them yet again and he prays in agony wrestling and fighting yet again Prayer is not one and done. I know that we pray through a lot of prayer requests, and many, if not most prayers, are repeated prayers. I want to encourage you to please do not grow weary of praying.

If you've been praying for someone to come to know the Lord, I don't care if it's been 50 years, please do not grow weary of praying. The pastors we were eating at Costco, hot dogs and then there was somebody next to us who was praying he was in his 80s and we were able to talk to him and he said that he was praying for his father for so many years and at the age of 100 his father came to know the Lord he went on to live an additional six years and died at 106 years please do not grow weary of repetitive prayer knock on that door tonight please do not grow weary of praying against sins that feel so difficult to fight against I pray that tonight as we're praying that you can have refreshed prayers that it might be the same prayer you've prayed a hundred times but it's as if you're praying for the first time that you come before God and remember that he is opening his ear to listen and that he is powerful to change and that he can work miracles in the hearts of people and in my very own heart.

That he is listening and he is not silent to those who are yielding to his will. That he wants to walk alongside his children. That he loves us. That he cares for us. That he wants what is best for us. And he desires to walk with us. He wants us to stop going out and causing our lives to be something where we're just trying to like pray mindlessly or pray just thinking that it's something that I'm supposed to do. And instead the places where we really go to find peace are those things where we could turn those things off, that we turn our minds off by watching things and turning to people and God is there and Jesus sets an example in his time of greatest need again and again and again here.

What it means to pray. What it looks like to pray. Pray for things to change. Pray for the world to change. Pray for our families to change. And so, it's going to be similar tonight. We're going to do the same thing. But I hope that you can pray with renewed vigor tonight. The first part, we're going to be praying on our own. We're going to be praying personal prayer. And the second part, we'll be praying for some prayer requests. And then after that part, we'll be breaking off into groups to pray for a few very specific things. Okay, so first, pray for a personal time. Pray in this personal time of repentance and surrender where we can say, your kingdom come and your will be done. And can you do this?

Can you pray clearing out your conscience? that you're not just using words to say your kingdom come, your will be done, but you're racking your heart to look for places of compromise where I am in fact living for my own kingdom and my own will. And I'm not just using words mindlessly saying your kingdom come, your will be done. Can you pray in real and actual surrender where you are dropping everything before God? Name and surrender sins. Pray in detail your sins. Pray to God. If there are places of anger, don't just pray, dear God, help me not be angry. God doesn't work that way. He doesn't just zap. He wants us to wrestle. if there is bitterness in your heart if there are grudges if there's indifference if there's lovelessness the amazing thing about prayer is if we come with a yielded heart praying his kingdom and his will do you know what happens at the end of the prayer?

action obedience and so pray name and surrender these sins lustfulness sensuality gluttony slothfulness material greed covetousness places where we're just like animals just wanting what we want doing what we want to do with our time with our money with our resources pray surrender these sins that we will not live like the world we will live in people with as people who are surrendered before god places where we are lacking self-control pray for the father's discipline pray if you're stubborn you know that prayer that we're all afraid to pray pray pray for the father's discipline pray that he will wreak havoc on our lives if we continue to to stay stubborn before him that he might open our eyes and also i want to ask i haven't i haven't like written out all these detailed prayers for this personal prayer. I want to ask you to please pray on your own in genuineness before God. But also, can you please make sure to have time to pray a prayer of gratitude before God? Pray thanking God. Remember his love. Remember his faithfulness, his care, his concern, and just sit there and marvel at why he would care to even wrestle with us. We're so stubborn and just sit there and marvel before God. So please pray to draw near to the Lord. Give you about 15 minutes here to pray and then I'll bring us back together.

pray for us heavenly father as we break off into groups we thank you lord that individually we could come to you and father as we pray together i pray that would be an encouragement to each other and god that we would remember the god we serve help us to come in fear and trembling help us to remember who you are as we come. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. If we go to the next slide here. So we can break up into groups of three. There are going to be three prayer requests. First, the Korea team. Pray for the team as they'll be welcoming a group of Korean young adults and touring LA, San Diego, visiting Disney. It's going to be happening in early July, so in about two or three weeks now. So there will be about 12 people who are coming, the majority of them unbelievers, so if you can pray for that team.

And there's just a lot to pray for in terms of Korea when it comes to just knowing how it is that will proceed in the country, that God might continue to open doors and maybe this can be one of those things. Secondly, please pray for the VBS as the volunteers have been preparing for a while now. As you know, that's a very, very big project, and there are hundreds of students who are going to be there, who are going to be listening. They're very excited. You know, these kids are very, very excited for the VBS, but we want that to be a time where the word can go out, where the volunteers can use that time to pray for the children, but maybe most importantly, pray for the time for the parents to be able to have those conversations with their kids, that it can be a good launching pad for parents to be discipling and shepherding their own children.

So pray for strength, pray for everything to run smoothly. Thirdly, the summertime, I know that this is just a broader version of the prayer request we had up top. But pray for a church as there's a break from Bible study, for sobriety, diligence, perseverance, intentionality, a wartime mentality. There's so much. I know when the Bible study kind of winds down, it launches into the summer and there's a good three or four months. We have a lot going on at church, as you know. But if there's no intentionality there, it's just going to kind of go by like that. So please pray that our church would be engaged as well as be able to find some of the rest that they might need. That we would be praying for our home group and small group leaders to have time for them to grow.

For our college students as they're heading home for summer. You know, that our families are having the kids at home. So it could be a really good time, but also it's very stressful, you know. And then for our youth students who are looking forward to going into the college ministry, this is a time of transition. And so there's a lot going on over the summer. So please pray for those three things as we break off into threes, okay? I'm going to bring us back in about 10 minutes for our closing praise. So please go right into it. If you don't know each other, say your names, and then just start praying, okay? Thank you.

We give you glory and honor. God, we desire for your kingdom and your will. God, we pray that all things might point to you and that we would be an accurate reflection of who you are in this world.
